One Young Hero is a Pokémon Mystery Dungeon-inspired story by AstralCat (better known around these parts as Jacksonk 987) hosted on Tumblr.
The basic premise is that five young Pokémon- Axew, Growlithe, Vulpix, Machop, and Torchic find a Riolu in the woods, who is supposedly prophesized to save the Pokémon world from the Shadows, a mysterious force that possesses Pokémon, making them more bloodthirsty and cruel.
A Spin-Off oneshot called Meet the Mushroom Caps is in the works, and will focus on some Canon Foreigners who are also Canon Immigrants -to be.
There is also a "Kai" version on AstralCat's Deviantart that fixes several issues and gives the characters actual names, as opposed to A Dog Named "Dog".
Can be found on AstralCat’s Tumblr blog here.
Examples:
- Balloon Belly: Growlithe/Growlie has one in Chapter 2 after completely devouring a quadruple-layer six-patty cheeseburger with extra bacon and a jumbo order of deep-fried Slowpoke tails on the side served with special dipping sauce.
- Big Eater:
- Growlithe/Growlie himself. Heck, the first chapter even says that if you placed a decently-sized plate of assorted Berries in front of Growlithe, it would be gone within mere seconds. (This part was removed in the Kai version.)
- Riolu/Taiki orders the same thing as Growlithe/Growlie when the team is at Greedent’s Grill.
- Bizarre Taste in Food: At Greedent's Grill, Torchic/Lili orders scrambled Chansey eggs with mustard and mayo, and fries with relish on top on the side. Corvisquire/Corvo seems a little disturbed by this.
- Boisterous Bruiser: Machop/Bruce's main battle strategy is described as "attack the other guy until one of them is defeated" (this blurb is absent in the Kai version), and he has a tendency to start Suddenly Shouting.
- Check, Please!: Vulpix/Tessa asks for the check after Growlithe/Growlie rips a fiery fart that burns a hole in his chair.
- Da Chief: Arcanine/Heatwave is Leafdew Town's police chief.
- Deadpan Snarker:
- Vulpix/Tessa can be one at times. For example:
“Hi, Riolu/Taiki!” Arcanine/Heatwave replied. Then he fell asleep on the spot.
“Is that... normal?” Riolu/Taiki asked Growlithe/Growlie.
“Hah, yeah. He does that all the time.” Growlithe/Growlie replied. “Hey, I think I didn’t tell you this, but my granpa's the Chief of Police here!”
Who really needs to be replaced with someone much younger and fitter, Vulpix/Tessa thought to herself.- Corvisquire/Corvo from Greedent's Grill has shades of this.“I’ll have the quadruple-layer six-patty cheeseburger with extra bacon and a jumbo order of deep-fried Slowpoke tails on the side, served with special dipping sauce of course!”
“Okay. So one heart killer combo. And you...” Corvisquire/Corvo turned to Riolu/Taiki. “I haven’t seen you around.”
- The Ditz:
- Growlithe/Growlie is not very bright, to say the least.
- Riolu/Taiki, probably due to being an Amnesiac Hero that's been living in the forest for almost his entire life.
- Expy: Riolu/Taiki could be considered one of Son Goku, being an Idiot Hero who was originally supposed to be a Tyke Bomb sent into an unfamiliar place by his evil father to eradicate a large number of living things, but both suffered a Tap on the Head, turning them into ditzes. They also both have Kamehamehadoken attacks.
- Farts on Fire: In Chapter 2, Growlithe/Growlie rips a flaming fart that burns a hole in his chair, and it's noted that the reason he farted fire was because of being a Fire-type Pokémon.Vulpix/Tessa: Check, Please!
- Furry Confusion: Here, wild Pokémon act like normal animals, but other Pokémon act like humans.
- Furry Reminder: Growlithe/Growlie wags his tail a few times.
- Genki Girl: Torchic/Lili is very excitable and a bit odd.
- Hold Your Hippogriffs: In Chapter 2, Growlithe/Growlie says that he's so hungry, he could eat a Hippowdon .
- And in Chapter 3, "Son of a Stoutland .
- Idiot Hero: Riolu/Taiki and Growlithe/Growlie. To call them dim would be a major understatement.
- Is It Something You Eat?: This seems to be Riolu/Taiki's modus operandi. If he hears about any concept that is even remotely alien to him, he'll think that it must be food. And in Chapter 2, he was trying to eat some of the menus at Greedent's Grill.
- Scatterbrained Senior: Arcanine/Heatwave falls asleep at the worst moments, and seems to prove that stupidity might be hereditary in his family. But somehow, he's still Da Chief of Leafdew Town.
- Senior Sleep-Cycle: Arcanine/Heatwave has a tendency to fall asleep suddenly at the worst moments.
- Tap on the Head: Riolu/Taiki loses his memory when he gets hit by a stray Rock Throw on the head.
- Waking Non Sequitur: Arcanine/Heatwave, upon being woken by his grandson in Chapter 2.“Hah? Is it something dangerous, Constable? Like a giant cake attacking the town?”
