Kill of the Night
is a modern AU fanfic for Disney's Frozen, written by FanFiction.Net author WolfBrigade.
Author's synopsis: "The Guild doesn't pay nearly enough money for the creatures Anna has to hunt down on the weekly basis. Seriously, it's like Arendelle's on top of a Hellmouth. So when she has to put out an ad for a roommate, all she wants is someone nice and normal. What she gets is the beautiful and awkward Elsa, who has a secret of her own."
This fanfic contains examples of:
- Afraid of Blood: Anna does not like the sight of blood unless it's coming out of the creatures she's hunting. She admits that this extends to avoiding the blood donation buses on campus. This is due to her mom bleeding to death in front of her, with Anna unable to stop the bleeding.
- Bloodless Carnage: Averted. Many of Anna's cases see her get at least a little injured. At worst, there's broken bones and lots of blood.
- Close to Home: After Elsa confesses that she's never met her dad, Anna goes on a small tirade on why that might actually be a good thing. Given her relationship with her own father, it's easy to see why she feels that way.
- Crouching Moron, Hidden Badass: How Anna has to act around Elsa. She pretends her injuries are due to being incredibly clumsy.
- Defrosting Ice Queen: Elsa. At first she was cool towards Anna due to her surprise that she's living with her love interest. She warms towards Kristoff later on, when she realizes he's not in a relationship with Anna.
- Disappeared Dad: Elsa's never known who her father is. Anna's dad left town shortly after her mother's death, without telling Anna. She only found out when she went to her house for Thanksgiving, only to find a new family living there. Ouch.
- Everyone Can See It: Kristoff and Rapunzel definitely know Elsa has feelings for Anna.
- Handicapped Badass: It's mentioned that Hiccup lost his leg while on a case, though he's still out hunting.
- Homeschooled Kids: Elsa was homeschooled until she was 16, which caused her to stay back a year when she went to a public school.
- An Ice Person: Both Jack and Elsa are ice fae. The full scope of their powers hasn't been revealed yet.
- Irrational Hatred: Anna seems to have this towards Thanksgiving. When it's revealed why she hates the holiday, it's suddenly a lot more understandable.
- Jerkass: Professor Weselton. If you're a minute late, he'll berate you in front of the entire lecture hall. He also goes into a mean-spirited tirade laced with innuendo when he finds Anna and Kristoff sleeping in his class.
- Jerkass with a Heart of Gold: Jack. His first meeting with Elsa is disastrous due to him trying to turn it into a date. It's revealed that he did it because he's desperate to know more about her, feeling kinship with her.
- Letting Her Hair Down: After a botched meeting with Jack, Elsa angrily undoes her tight bun, letting her hair fall loose around her. Upon seeing this, Anna suddenly wonders why she feels higher on the Kinsey Scale than usual.
- Love Epiphany: In chapter 9, Anna has one, though it's the realization of Elsa's feelings towards her.
- Love Hurts: literal when it comes to ice fae—being rejected by someone they love makes their powers turn inwards, which can slowly freeze them to death
- Magic Antidote: Many of Anna's magic creams and ointments work nearly instantly, healing her of scrapes, bruises, and soreness. Though this is subverted slightly with Jack's antivenom; the akaname venom will still be in Anna for six to eight weeks after taking the medicine.
- Masquerade: Anna's job as a hunter helps uphold this: she kills or relocates dangerous creatures away from Arendelle.
- Mistaken for Romance: Anna and Kristoff are used to people thinking they're dating, even though they see themselves as siblings. Professor Weselton and Elsa in particular seem to think the two are an item (though Elsa realizes later that she was wrong).
- Mysterious Parent: Elsa doesn't know who her father is.
- Nightmare Sequence: Anna has one involving the shifter she killed morphing into her mom, who then bleeds out in front of her. This is apparently a nastier spin on the Recurring Dreams she had after her mom died.
- Not What It Looks Like: Elsa just about has a meltdown when she sees Anna about to kill what appears to be a naked, severely injured woman.
- Oh, Crap!: Anna's reaction when she realizes that the akaname is on the ceiling. Also when she sees Elsa in the middle of a case.
- Older Than They Look: Jack is a little less than three hundred years old, yet he looks like he's in his early twenties.
- One-Steve Limit: Averted with the appearance of two characters named "Jack": Jack Alkaev and Jack O'Connor, though the latter is mainly identified by his surname.
- The Order: The Guild is so far pretty mysterious, though it's known that they at least have: a faction who kill or relocate creatures who threaten humans (hunters). People who are responsible for finding and giving the location of the creatures to the hunters (recon). And those who fill out the paperwork after a creature has been killed (cleanup).
- Parental Abandonment: It's revealed in chapter 7 that of Anna's parents her mom is dead and her father left Anna without warning shortly afterwards.
- Parental Neglect: Kristoff was emancipated when he was 16 so his parents could travel the world for their jobs. They still send him the occasional care package.
- Pinned to the Wall: Elsa does this with an icicle to Anna, thinking she's protecting a 'woman' Anna is trying to kill
- Platonic Life-Partners: Anna and Kristoff. They are each other's best friend, confidant, and occasional hunting partner.
- Powerful Pick: Two ice axes are Kristoff's preferred weapons of choice.
- Psychic Powers: It's candidly mentioned that Kristoff, 'part esper on his mother's side', shares a psychic connection with his dog, Sven.
- The Reveal: Several. At the end of chapter 5 Anna finds out that Elsa is not entirely human. A couple chapters later, it's revealed that Elsa and Anna's mothers have both died, and Anna's father abandoned her. Elsa also finds out about Anna's job
- Seen It All: Anna, to the degree that learning about Elsa's powers doesn't elicit anything other than mild surprise.
- Skewed Priorities: After having a raging fever and almost dying the night before and finding out her roommate isn't entirely human, Anna takes the time to wash Elsa's bedding before meeting with Jack.
