from porcelain to ivory to steel is a What If? JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Stardust Crusaders fanfic by ascxndent exploring what would happen if Sherry survived and Jean died instead.

from porcelain to ivory to steel provides examples of:

  • Adaptational Late Appearance: Death 13 appears in Sherry's dream following the battle with N'Doul while the group is recovering in a hospital.
  • Adaptational Superpower Change:
    • In canon, Anne has no powers. Here, she's the user of a Stand called Worlds Apart.
    • On top of her canonical status as a Stand user Enya is able to use black magic.
    • Nena's Stand acts as a slow-acting poison rather than a growing humanoid flesh-parasite.
  • Adaptational Wimp:
    • Devo puts up a decent fight in canon, but here he doesn't even manage to land a single hit before being burned/stabbed to death.
    • Forever has it even worse, not even getting a chance to fight before getting his head impaled by Silver Chariot's sword.
  • Adaptational Origin Connection: The fake Captain Tennille, real name Daryl, was the Bad Boss of the men that found DIO's coffin. He's also the real Captain Tennille's Evil Twin.
  • Adaptational Protagonist: Sherry Polnareff in Stardust Crusaders was a Posthumous Character whose death and rape by J. Geil was the motivation of her brother Jean-Pierre, the Deuteragonist to the Part's protagonist Jotaro Kujo. from porcelain to ivory to steel has Sherry surviving the encounter at the cost of her brother's death, and follows her effort to hunt down and kill J. Geil along with defeating DIO.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: Even after death, Jonathan Joestar is still the Good Is Not Soft gentleman as he was in life. In the final battle against Death 13, he binds the enemy with his own Stand and threatens to haunt him if he continues to threaten his family.
  • Born of Magic: J. Geil was created by Enya's dark magic. This is apparently the reason behind his bizarre appearance.
  • Cassandra Truth: No one believes that Joseph's stories about the events of Part 2 really happened.
  • Creepy Doll: Avdol mentions having a phobia of dolls, specifically the ones with glass eyes.
  • Death by Adaptation: Polnareff ends up being killed by J. Geil instead of Sherry thanks to her forgetting her umbrella on a fateful rainy day.
  • Disk-One Final Boss: In Chapter 19, Sherry finally defeats and kills J. Geil. The author even describes this as the end of the first half of Sherry's journey.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: Terrance and Mariah have nothing but disgusts for the pedophilia Alessi.
  • Eye Scream:
    • Silver Chariot stabs out one of J. Geil's eyes when he tries to kill Sherry.
    • Like in canon, N'Doul attacks at Kakyoin's eyes, this time completely taking out his right eye rather than slashing both of them.
  • Fighting from the Inside: Receiving a severe burn during her fight with Avdol breaks the fleshbud's control on Sherry long enough for her to beg Avdol for help.
  • Fire/Water Juxtaposition: Avdol is much more involved in the fight against N'Doul compared to canon.
  • Gender Flip: Pet Shop, the Stand-weilding falcon guarding DIO's mansion, is female instead of male.
  • Incompatible Orientation: Sherry falls in love with Avdol and confesses in chapter 13. Avdol responds that while he loves her as a friend, he has never had romantic feelings for any woman, and apologizes for misleading her.
  • It's Always Sunny at Funerals: Jean's funeral takes place on a beautiful day with bright blue skies. Sherry finds it "completely inappropriate for the occasion."
  • Kill and Replace: Tennille ends up murdered by his own twin brother Daryl for this reason.
  • Nephewism: Downplayed. Terrence D'Arby isn't the official guardian of his nephew Amr, but he keeps an eye on him more than Amr's father Daniel and is much more protective of Amr against threats, even against Vanilla Ice.
  • Nice Job Fixing It, Villain: In chapter 28, Alessi uses Sethan to deage Joseph to before he got his stand while the later tries to save a now child Midler. The problem is that Sethan turn Joseph back to his prime when he was fighting the Pillar Men and he's more of capable to beating up the horrendous man with his strength, wits, and hamon.
  • The Only One Allowed to Defeat You: J. Geil refuses to let anyone other than himself kill Sherry, even turning on his ex-partner Hol Horse when he attacks her. And when his mother Enya captures Sherry and brings her to him, he refuses to kill her because he wasn't the one to capture her.
  • Point of Divergence: Sherry forgetting her umbrella (and subsequently her brother bringing it to her) ends up indirectly causing many of the changes from canon.
  • Pregnant Badass: Sherry finds out that she's been impregnated by DIO while under his control. After some consideration, she decides to both keep the baby and continue to fight DIO.
  • Properly Paranoid: Sherry's uneasy feelings about the doll possessed by Ebony Devil and Forever both turn out to be 100% justified.
  • Put on a Bus: With the curse from Enya getting worse after their battle against her and J. Geil, Joseph goes with the Speedwagon Foundation for an amputation surgery.
  • Related in the Adaptation: The boy that helped Daniel D'Arby in the poker match, named Amr, is Daniel's illegitimate son.
  • Screw This, I'm Out of Here!: While originally enthralled by DIO's charm like in canon, Midler now wants to escape after J. Geil's death and avoid becoming another thrall in his harem. After confirmation from Joseph that he and his team will kill DIO, she agrees to go with them and shares what she knows about her ex-colleagues.
  • Sheep in Sheep's Clothing: In chapter 23, Sherry runs into a large muscular doctor who tries to help her before she rushes after an illusion of her brother Jean. When she describes the man to Avdol in the next chapter, Avdol fearfully confirms that the man isn't Sherry's doctor, leading them and the audience to suspect he's an agent of DIO. However, in the following chapter, it's not only revealed that the man isn't an enemy when he helps Sherry against Death 13, he turns out to be Jonathan Joestar, his spirit still fighting against DIO and his army.
  • Side Bet: Kakyoin bets Sherry five dollars that Jotaro picks a fight with Captain Tennille. Sherry counter-bets ten dollars that the Captain punches him back.
  • Spared by the Adaptation: Sherry survives being attacked by J. Geil in this fic. Instead, it's her brother Polnareff who gets killed by J. Geil instead.
  • Summon Bigger Fish: Sherry escapes Hol Horse's clutches by deliberately luring out J. Geil.
  • Targeted to Hurt the Hero: DIO has a curse sent to Holly Kujo as a means of tormenting her father Joseph, the closest living relative of his Archenemy Jonathan.
  • This Is Something He's Got to Do Himself: While reluctant to do, in Chapter 19 Avdol allows Sherry to fight and kill her Arch-Enemy J. Geil and also rescue Anne, while he helps the rest of the group get to safety.
  • Villain Episode: An interlude taking place during the Death 13 arc focuses on some of the 9 Egyptian Gods, Vanilla Ice, Hol Horse, and Enya
  • You Are in Command Now: After Joseph has to leave the team so his arm can be amputated for the curse Enya put on him, Avdol realizes that the other Crusaders are now looking to him for leadership, as he is currently the oldest and most experienced Stand User of the group.
