Yagumo Region

    Yuba
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/yuba.jpg
Voiced by: Sayaka Ohara (JP)

The chief of a village in the Karasuki Kingdom that Rio stays at when he arrives in the Yagumo Region, the elderly Yuba is the grandmother of Ruri. Doubling as the village pharmacist, she has a reputation for having a large number of social connections among the surrounding villages.

  • Apron Matron: Yuba allows Rio to stay in the village, particularly her own residence. Eventually, as Rio begins improving the village with his knowledge of agriculture and helps cultivate their crops in time for the tax officers coming to the village from the capital, she entrusts him as protection detail for when the villagers sell the remaining leftover rice at the city. Furthermore, Yuba is the only person in the village to know Spirit Arts, but would teach it to Ruri, Sayo and Shin, as they're the only ones born with the capacity of using it.
  • Long-Lost Relative: She's Rio's paternal grandmother and the mother to his father, Zen, who was her youngest son.
  • Never Mess with Granny: In regards to village politics and negotiations - when Gon is arrested for trying to rape Ruri, she points out that Gon's father has some blame in this for failing to raise him properly, and tells him to sell Gon into penal slavery and his followers into contract slavery in order to compensate her village. When Gon's father hesitates, she threatens to confiscate his village's cargo that was left in her village.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: Even though it's implied Gon and his goons deliberately sabotaged their own carriage of goods that they're looking to sell at the capital and made their way into Yuba's village to take advantage of her hospitality, Yuba allows them to stay for the night in a traveler's hut at the edge of town to avoid any further conflict after Shin tries to land a punch at Gon for harassing Sayo.

    Ruri

Voiced by: Chiaki Omigawa (JP)

Yuba's granddaughter, 15 year-old Ruri is the eldest child to Yuba's oldest son. Ten years earlier, her mother and younger brother died from starvation due to an epidemic and a bad harvest, while her father was also deceased, but the cause is unknown; she has been raised by her grandmother ever since. Growing up, Ruri is Childhood Friends with siblings Shin and Sayo, who often come to Yuba's residence for breakfast, but also because they were taught Spirit Arts by Yuba together and they bonded over their status as orphans.

  • Genki Girl: With the exception of Gon and his lackeys, Ruri is perpetually cheerful and sociable to everyone.
  • First-Name Basis: Even though all of the village girls address Rio as "Rio-sama", Ruri is the only one not to without care. This gets troublesome when he stops calling her "Ruri-san" and the other girls are suspicious that the two of them have a Relationship Upgrade, not knowing by that point, Ruri has been told she and Rio are cousins.
  • Long-Lost Relative: Rio is her younger paternal cousin; this secret is kept from her until Rio and Yuba decides to let her in the know.
  • Ship Tease: Implied with Saga Hayate as she treats him differently than any other man.

    Sayo and Shin

Voiced by: Yurika Kubo (JP, Sayo), Toshiki Masuda (JP, Shin)

A sibling pair living in Yuba's village, 13 year-old Sayo is the younger sister to 16 year-old Shin. Having lost their parents in the epidemic, they grew up together with Ruri and watched over by Yuba.

  • He Is Not My Boyfriend: The other girls in Yuba's village accuse Sayo of monopolizing Rio's time, which she denies. She also says this to a shopkeeper selling some jewelry after she and Rio pass by.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Shin starts off disliking Rio, but he isn't outright cruel about it when compared to Rio's classmates from the Beltrum Royal Academy - he's simply protective of his sister. After Rio saves Ruri and Sayo from Gon, Shin becomes more appreciative of Rio's presence, even begging Rio to stay in the village and not return to the Strahl Region so as to not break Sayo's heart.
  • Love at First Sight: Sayo fall for Rio upon seeing him for the first time and addresses him as "Rio-sama" because of his mannerisms.
  • Love Confession: Sayo gives Rio one the day before he leaves the village. She even practiced her spirt arts and tried to learn some basic combat skills in order to go with him and be less of a burden, but he doesn't want to put her in danger, so ends up rejecting her feelings. Even then, she doesn't give up on her feelings, resolving to become stronger for him.
  • My Sister Is Off-Limits: Played straight when Shin despises Rio for seemingly trying to gain Sayo's affections, but Averted when Rio makes plans to leave the village, where Shin begs him to stay so that Sayo won't be sad.
  • Shipper on Deck: After Shin warmed up to Rio, and accidentally learns from Sayo that he was planning to leave, he begs Rio to stay. While he doesn't implicitly say it, it's likely he wanted Rio to stay and marry Sayo.
  • Ship Tease: After Rio buys a hairpin for her, the shopkeeper tells Sayo to "dig her claws" into him, implying that many women were going to be after him if she didn't pursue him aggressively enough.
  • The Bus Came Back: After 12 Volumes, Sayo and Shin appeared in the story but the first thing they saw upon meeting Rio is him being surrounded by his harem. Needless to say this angered Shin and made Sayo sad.

    Zen and Ayame
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/zenandayame.jpg
Voiced by: Yo Taichi (JP, Ayame)

Rio's posthumous father and mother, Zen and Ayame are his raison d'être for Revenge.

  • Bodyguard Crush: Because of Zen's natural talent in swordplay and Spirit Arts, he was recommended to serve as Ayame's guardian after his feats serving in the army were recognized. Both would be attracted to one another, and following their exile from Karasuki, the two would elope.
  • Frame-Up: When Zen foils a plot by the Rokuren Kingdom to kidnap Ayame, the Rokuren agent committed suicide, allowing Rokuren to accuse Zen for murder and demand his head (as the agent was an attendant of the Rokuren prince). Since Karasuki and Rokuren were in the midst of an armistice agreement, the agent's death gave Rokuren political leverage, with the prince demanding a marriage between himself and Ayame.
  • Hostage Situation: Rio is held at mercy by Lucius, forcing Ayame to obey his orders; this would lead to her death at his hands.
  • Motherly Side Plait: Ayame wore her hair like this while raising Rio, as lampshaded in the title of this clip.
  • Really Royalty Reveal: Karasuki Ayame is the only daughter to Emperor Homura and Empress Shizuku of the Karasuki Kingdom, making Rio a prince by birthright (though he cannot be publicly acknowledged as one due to Ayame's exile).
  • The Reveal: Because of the Frame-Up, Zen and Ayame fled the Yagumo Region, but Karasuki and Rokuren continued the war, leading to a Karasuki victory. Although Emperor Homura entrusted his daughter to Zen, public outcry from the war forced him to officially declare the two as outlaws and the instigators behind the drawn-out conflict.
  • Walking Spoiler: Knowing who Zen and Ayame really were in the Yagumo Region changes the scope of Rio's lineage and what he stands to possibly inherit.
  • The Worf Effect: Rio suspects that Lucius was the one who killed Zen In the Back, since not many others were able to match him in swordsmanship.

    Gon
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/gon_1.jpg
Voiced by: Takuya Nakashima (JP)

The unsavory second son of a neighboring village's chief, Gon will do anything to get what he wants, believing his physique and knowledge of Spirit Arts gives him an advantage over anyone.

  • Asshole Victim: About the only good thing that came out of Gon was that Shin saw Rio in a much different light after protecting Ruri and Sayo from an Attempted Rape by this Jerkass.
  • And Now You Must Marry Me: He thinks that if he rapes Ruri, the village chief's granddaughter, she'll be forced to marry him, giving him complete autonomy, on the notion that Ruri is Yuba's successor.
  • Attempted Rape: He sneaks into Yuba's house in order to rape Ruri, but is caught and beaten up by Rio.
  • Entitled to Have You: Gon makes his feelings towards Ruri explicit when he appears; taken to its logical conclusion when he tries to rape her.
  • Fate Worse than Death: Combined with Laser-Guided Karma, after being spared from narrowly getting pummeled to death by Rio, Gon is sold into penal slavery as punishment for Attempted Rape.
  • Freudian Excuse Is No Excuse: Gon is a brute who likes to use his huge size and his family's influence to push around people he sees as weak, and believes he's entitled to any woman he wants. While the cast acknowledges that his father's neglect and favoritism towards his older brother is a major factor in his attitude, they also point out that his Attempted Rape of Ruri is inexcusable and that he must face punishment.
  • Muscles Are Meaningless: Zigzagged; Gon looks like the typical Gonk, but he can easily overpower Shin, yet stands absolutely no chance against an experienced martial artist and Spirit Art user like Rio. Best demonstrated when he tries to tackle Rio in their first meeting, but Rio doesn't even budge (in the Animated Adaptation, Gon tries to trip Rio, only to get tripped himself).
  • Too Dumb to Live: Even when given hospitality by Yuba, Gon still insists on carrying out an Attempted Rape, despite that plan coinciding with the tax officers' visit and stay in Yuba's village. Since the latter are trained in combat and are influential witnesses, getting caught by one for a heavy crime virtually guarantees punishment to the full extent of the law. For his asinine attempt, Gon is sold into slavery.

    The Saga Family
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/goukiandkayoko.jpg
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/hayatesaga.jpg
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/komomosaga.jpg
Voiced by: Takaki Otomari (JP, Gouki), Nozomi Yamamoto (JP, Kayoko), Chiaki Kobayashi (JP, Hayate), Yui Fukuo (JP, Komomo)

A very influential house in the Karasuki Kingdom who serves the royal family, it is led by Saga Gouki, an experienced warrior who fought in the war between Karasuki and the Rokuren Kingdom. His family includes his wife Saga Kayoko, their oldest son Saga Hayate, a tax officer, two younger unnamed sons and Saga Komomo, their youngest daughter.

  • Blood Knight: Gouki enjoyed his duel with Rio, and went as far as to use an attack that could easily kill a lesser opponent since he knows Rio would be able to survive it.
  • Blow You Away: In his duel with Rio, he uses his strongest Spirit Art "Dankuu", an extremely sharp blade of wind.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: Hayate is in a high position of authority as a tax officer and being from a renowned family, but is polite and never abuses his power. He also stops Rio from killing Gon so that the latter can be brought to justice, but also that Rio doesn't kill someone in front of Ruri and Sayo.
  • The Worf Effect: Despite being the strongest soldier in Karasuki, Rio easily defeats Gouki. That said, he fares much better than many of Rio's other opponents due to his years of swordsmanship and skill with Spirit Arts.
  • Undying Loyalty: As former attendants to the posthumous Ayame, Gouki and Kayoko willingly dedicate their services to her son Rio, even wishing to help him fulfill his Revenge on Lucius. After Rio returns to the Strahl Region, the Saga family decides to head West to follow him as his retainers.
  • You Don't Look Like You: Gouki's physical appearance varies depending on the medium - in the Light Novel, he looks as if he's in his late-20s to early 30s, while the Manga makes him a middle-aged man. The Animated Adaptation has the oldest depiction of Gouki with a full beard and the body of a hardened warrior.
