Proxia Empire

    Reiss Vulfe
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/chara_pic11.png
Voiced by: Koji Yusa (Japanese), CDawgVA (English)

  • Ambiguously Human: While he claims that he's not a spirit, Reiss is very similar to one due to his knowledge and use of Spirit Arts.
  • Big Bad: As the ambassador of the Proxia Empire, he manipulates the conflicts in the series to spark war.
  • Faux Affably Evil: He always speaks to Rio and his friends in a polite manner, despite taking joy in watching them struggle.
  • Hidden Agenda Villain: He sends a minotaur after Rio and his Royal Beltrum Academy classmates in Volume 1, lures a black wyvern to Spirit Folk Village in Volume 2, and attacks the city of Amande with ghouls, all for unknown purposes.
  • Nice Job Fixing It, Villain: A number of events that Rio needs to solve are due to Reiss' machinations. As a result, he winds up indirectly helping Rio due to the connections and rewards he acquires for solving a crisis.
  • Pragmatic Villainy: Reiss eventually catches on that the more he tries to antagonize Rio, the higher the chance that the plans that he's working on at the time will get interrupted by him. He decides the best way to deal with that is by outright ignoring Rio and letting him do his own thing; should their paths cross, Reiss will simply go directly at his objective than rather confront Rio directly.
  • Teeth-Clenched Teamwork: While he and Lucius Orgueil initially seem to get along, he notes that the latter's sadistic impulses causes him to be an unpredictable ally to work with. Their working relationship becomes even more strained after Lucius is injured by Rio, leading to him becoming more impulsive and less likely to follow Reiss' plans.
  • Underestimating Badassery: Subverted - even in the earlier volumes of the Light Novel, Reiss never downplays Rio upon seeing his feats like Spirit Art usage, especially when he has incomplete knowledge of what Rio is truly capable of doing.
  • You Have Outlived Your Usefulness: Many of his Unwitting Pawns are made to swallow magic gems, with Reiss lying to them that they will help them, but are nothing more akin to Suicide Pills that will cause them to die once Reiss crushes a matching gem in order to hide evidence of his involvement.

    Lucius Orgueil
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/luciusorgueil.jpg
Voiced by: Kosuke Toriumi (Japanese), Matt Shipman (English)

A famous adventurer who is seemingly allied with Reiss, Lucius Orgueil is Rio's Arch-Enemy and the driving force behind the latter's motivations for the majority of Seirei Gensouki.

  • Adaptation Expansion: In the light novel, he participates in Reiss' raid on Amande and fights Rio earlier than in the Web Novel.
  • Arch-Enemy: Lucius relishes in the idea that Rio wants to hunt him down and kill him to avenge his parents.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: When he approached Zen and Ayame, he initially seemed like a well-mannered and generous benefactor, but he always planned to betray and kill them painfully.
  • Card-Carrying Villain: He refers to himself as a demon when beating up Rio and using him as a hostage against Ayame.
  • For the Evulz:
    • Not only did he rape and kill Ayame for his own amusement, he spared Rio because he finds the idea of the latter seeking vengeance on him amusing.
    • Rather than kill Princess Flora Beltrum immediately, he forcibly teleports her to the Kingdom of Paladia, then instigates Duran to hunt her down.
  • Hate Sink: This mercenary falsely befriended Rio's parents simply to enjoy killing them later, while sparing Rio so he can live an impoverished, insufferable life. Before his rematch with Rio, he takes Flora and Princess Christina Beltrum hostage, mocks them for their ugly past with Rio, and threatens to rape and kill Rio's companions in front of the latter. With absolutely zero redeemable qualities, Lucius is bar none the most evil character in the Seirei Gensouki story.
  • Killed Off for Real: Finally dies by Rio's hands at the end of Volume 14 of the light novel; for good measure, his corpse is burnt to ashes.
  • Mask of Sanity: He's a sadist who enjoys dragging out his victims' suffering, but is at least able to function as a seemingly professional mercenary when working for Reiss and can fake kindness right before stabbing his "friend" Zen In the Back. The mask becomes more transparent after Rio injures him in their first fight, causing Lucius to become obsessed with killing Rio. He even lashes out at Reiss because he thinks the latter is going to interfere with his second match against Rio.
  • The Only One Allowed to Defeat You: His working relationship with Reiss becomes strained when he fears that Reiss might try to kill Rio without him.
  • Psycho for Hire: Lucius is a cruel adventurer on Reiss' payroll and leads the "Heavenly Lions", a band of similarly wicked sellswords.
  • Rape Is a Special Kind of Evil: He raped Ayame in front of Rio and killed her, which Justifies why Rio shows no mercy towards anyone who tries the same act.
  • Revenge: An ambiguous case - members of the Restoration faction for the Kingdom of Beltrum think he helped Reiss attack them because he wants payback for being ostracized due to his house falling, but Rio believes he's primarily motivated by sadism since he'll sometimes jeopardize his job for his own amusement.
  • Underestimating Badassery: He did this on Rio in their first duel and narrowly got away with his life, but not without losing an arm.
  • Teleport Spam: Lucius' sword has the power to control space, allowing it to attack outside of its normal range. His artificial arm and eye he receives later on can enhance his control over space further, allowing him to teleport short distances.
  • Worf Had the Flu: He becomes a candidate for the title of "King's Sword", Beltrum's best warrior, but he gets one-sidedly beaten by Rio during their first battle due to Rio getting the drop on Lucius, immediately cutting his left arm, which left him at a disadvantage. Averted in their Volume 14 rematch, where Lucius is much stronger due to receiving artificial body parts from Reiss that enhances his spacial magic.

    Nidoll Proxia

A former mercenary who later rose to become king of the Proxia Empire.

  • Blood Knight: Nidoll enjoys his fight with Rio that he swears the latter can wish for anything upon defeating him.
  • I Gave My Word: After losing to Rio, he answers all the questions that Rio needs, but Subverted when it turns out that Reiss and Nidoll already planned for this so they can dispose of Lucius, who was becoming a liability at this point.

The 14 Transcendental Beings

Due to the nature of the following characters, spoilers are unmarked to avoid redundancy.

    Dragon King Ryuo
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/dragonkingryuo.jpg

A Transcendental who reigns over dragons and has the power over "Annihilation" - the ability to erase anything that threatens the world.

  • Foreshadowing: Ryuo was first hinted at when Rio arrived in the Yagumo Region and was told about the tale of the "Hero King" by Saga Hayate and how Rio's name reminds him of the legendary figure.
  • Gentle Giant: As stated by Sora, the Dragon King has the ability to turn himself into a dragon, a power Sora herself shares, but is currently unable to do so due to his current incarnation of Rio and his inability to assume said form. He is also described to be kind and caring, as he turned Sora into his Familiar for no reason other than to save her life.
  • Reincarnation: Twice over - Ryuo's second life was that of Amakawa Haruto; his third life is that of Rio.

    Lina
The seventh of the Wise Gods, Lina was exiled (imprisoned) by the others after she disagreed with them on their research into inter-dimensional travel as a way to bring back their God. She was later freed by the other Wise Gods to help them seek the assistance of the remaining Transcendental beings (the Six Great Spirits and the Dragon King).
  • Reincarnation: Lina's physical body becomes Ayase Miharu, while the other half that is her divine power turns a Soul Fragment that is the high-class spirit Aishia.
  • Seers: She has the ability to see potential futures and calculate how to realize the future she chooses. Much of the main story of Seirei Gensouki unraveling the way it does is thanks to her preparations 1000 years ago.

    The Six Great Spirits
The strongest of the spirits, each of them has power over one of the six elements. They disappeared over the course of the Divine-Demon War. In reality, they are all currently sealed in each of the six heroes' Divine Weapons.
  • Supernatural Sealing: They are currently sealed in the heroes' Divine Weapons, and as the Earth Spirit shows, will grab any opportunity to take control should they be given the chance to do so.
