Fated Clash participants

    In General
  • The Chosen Many: Each of them was chosen by a Fated One card representing one of the six Nations of Cray.
  • Graceful Loser: There are no hard feelings between the participants after one of them is eliminated although Masanori downplays this due to being genuinely creeped by Suo.

    Akina Myodo

Keter Sanctuary

Voiced by: Toshiba Miyata (JP), Ethan Snowden (EN)

Akina Myodo is the main protagonist of Cardfight!! Vanguard Divinez.

Akina plays a Keter Sanctuary deck based around Fated One of Miracles, Rezael. His avatar is Fated One of Miracles, Rezael, who has the skill to call two units with different grades that add up to less than the grade of Rezael and call them when Rezael attacks by Counter Blasting 1. Its Divine Skill allows him to shuffle all Critical Triggers from his Drop into his deck and it gets Drive +1 until the end of the turn. Also, it gets the ability when he has at least five damage and he reveals a Trigger other than a Heal Trigger, he can heal 1 damage once, but until the end of the fight, he cannot Ride units that do not have "Rezael" in the name.

  • All-Loving Hero: You cannot get more all-loving than still desiring to befriend the man, who indirectly causes his death in a Bad Future.
  • Anime Hair: He has primarily blue hair with a red and white cowlick sticking in the front.
  • Big Brother Instinct: The sole reason he started playing Vanguard is to win the Fated Clash to improve his sister's health.
  • Contrasting Sequel Protagonist: To Yu-yu:
    • Akina is caring and protective of his younger sister, which causes him to start playing Vanguard and join the Fated Clash to wish for her health to improve, while Yu-yu does not hate his two elder sisters, he dislikes them forcing him to crossdress.
    • Akina's only teacher on Vanguard is Nao with him creating his deck by himself after researching the game including buying all the cards himself, while Yu-yu had the help of Blackout with his deck.
    • Akina is an extrovert with several friends along with not being shy about making connections to others, while Yu-yu starts as more introverted with him gaining more friends and courage after joining Blackout.
  • Darkhorse Victory: Despite being the only beginner in the Fated Clash, he was able to continue advancing the rounds and defeat the more experienced Nao and Taizo along with winning the clash by defeating Suo.
  • Determinator: Despite how low his chances of victory are in the Fated Clash, he continues his participation to grab the miraculous chance of victory.
  • Loved by All: By the time the final match came, all the other competitors came to watch his fight against Suo despite him messaging them not to come and them knowing they would all die if Suo wins with Nao, Mikoto, and Taizo coming to show their faith in him, while Masanori being interested to see if he can truly pull off a miracle.
  • My Greatest Failure: Something went wrong on a trip, which caused Hikari's health to worsen with it being his fault, which is why he is so focused on winning the Fated Clash.
  • Personality Powers: He is the one chosen by the Fated One of Miracles and he is an optimistic person willing to bet everything to grab the narrow chance of victory despite how much the odds are against him.

    Nao Inabe

Dragon Empire

Voiced by: Yuka Nishio (JP), Rocio Barahona (EN)

A university freshman who is Akina's senior at the family dinner they both work part-time at and the one chosen by the Fated One of Unparalleled card. Nao wishes to one day become a professional vanguard player.

Nao uses a Dragon Empire deck based around Fated One of Unparalleled, Varga Dragres. Her avatar has the skill to re-stand itself by retiring the front row units of both players and losing its drive checks. Due to this, she uses units that are immune to being retired or have effects that activate when retired. Its Divine Skill allows it to re-stand once more, but with its Twin Drive regained.

  • Armor-Piercing Response: When Masanori tells them they better need to run if they want to live after she and the others note that Blangdmire's Divine Skill can finish Akina off regardless of Razael's Divine Skill. Only for her to reply why he isn't running away, which she sees as proof that he also believes that Akina can pull off a miracle.
  • Greasy Spoon: She works at a diner when she isn’t playing Vanguard. Akina also works there part time.
  • Heroic Second Wind: Varga Dragres can re-stand once with its normal skill and once every fight if its Divine Skill is activated with its Twin Drive restored.
  • The Mentor: She is the one who teaches Akina how to play Vanguard and helps him create his strategy against Taizo.

    Mikoto Saito

Lyrical Monasterio

Voiced by: Haruki Iwata (JP), Amber Billingsley (EN)

An Idol singer who was chosen by the Fated One of Ever-changing card. She is a first-year student at the same high school as Akina and Suo.

Mikoto's Lyrical Monasterio is based around the Fated One of Ever-changing, Krysrain. Krysrain's ability gives the player the choice between three different effects: Increasing her critical by 1, giving a unit an additional 15000 Power, and a draw and Energy charge 3; but should the player have 4 or 5 units on their field with different names, they can choose two or all three of these effects. As such, Mikoto includes many different cards in her deck to make sure she can meet that condition. Krysrain's Divine Skill takes advantage of the increase in Critical and Power she can obtain by returning all rear-guards to the hand before calling a unit from hand and changing its power and critical to match her own.

  • Bespectacled Cutie: When outside her idol work, she wears glasses and still looks adorable.
  • Idol Singer: Mikoto works as an idol but, at the start of the series, is on hiatus.

    Suo Yobitsugi

Dark States

Voiced by: Reiji Kawashima (JP), Brett Bauer (EN)

A young man with an apathetic attitude who was chosen by the Fated One of Zero. He is Akina's classmate.

Suo uses a Dark States deck centered around his Fated One of Zero, Blangdmire. Like other decks of that nation, he aims to place cards in the soul, in this case, to bind them face-down as cost for Blangdmire's. Once at least eight cards have been accumulated in such a fashion, Suo can unleash his vanguard's Divine Skill to increase its critical and seal Perfect Guard units as well as any abilities possessed by his opponent and their vanguard until their next turn ends. To keep up the pressure, his rear-guards also have skills to increase their critical.

  • Ambiguous Situation: It is unclear if the void that killed all the participants sans Taizo in the original timeline was the intention of his wish or if Blangdmire took his wish for nothing too literal.
  • Broken Ace: He is an outright genius in Vanguard yet he is an Empty Shell broken by the accident that killed his parents.
  • Dull Eyes of Unhappiness: His eyes lack a shine in them showcasing how lifeless he is.
  • Empty Shell: After surviving the accident that killed his parents, Suo completely shut down emotionally having absolutely no desire or interest in anything.
  • Final Boss: He is the last opponent Akina has to face to win the Fated Clash.
  • Foil: Towards Akina:
    • Akina is a sociable person full of life, while Suo is an asocial Empty Shell.
    • Akina uses a Keter Sanctuary deck, which focuses on calling as many units as possible with Rezael's allowing multiple attacks per turn, he uses a Dark States deck, which focuses on finishing the game with a single powerful attack through Blangdmire's Divine Skill. This difference was even noted by Taizo with Akina quickly calling many units to attack, while Suo started attacking with only his Vanguard.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: Since Blangdmire's skill forces his opponent to bind two of their rear-guards facedown, Akina can use the Fated One of Time's skill, which can prevent another Fated One from being hit by an attack at the cost of returning two bound cards to the bottom of his deck.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: Since he never talked to anyone in his class due to being an Empty Shell all the time, the fact he is willing to talk to others after the Fated Clash is a big surprise to his classmates.
  • The Stoic: Since he is more or less dead inside, he rarely emotes.
  • Trauma-Induced Amnesia: He blocked off the memories of his parents after surviving the accident that killed them. His fight against Akina allows him to regain the good memories he had including the love he has for Vanguard.
  • Used to Be a Sweet Kid: Before the accident, he was a normal kid, who enjoyed playing Vanguard.

    "Fox Mask" (Spoilers

Hikari Myodo

Keter Sanctuary

Voiced by: Eri Yukimura (JP), Lexi Ly (EN)

A mysterious person wearing a fox mask, who warns Akina that all the participants will die in the Fated Clash. This mysterious figure would later on be revealed to be the holder of another Fated One card.

After failing to prevent either Akina or Suo from becoming the last two, she reveals herself to be Hikari from the future, who after winning the Fated Clash of her time, used the wish to change her brother's fate.

She plays a Keter Sanctuary deck focused around the Fated One of Time, Liael゠Amorta.

  • Broken Bird: Her brother's sudden disappearance broke her turning her from a cheerful young girl into someone hellbent on saving her brother.
  • But Now I Must Go: After Akina changes his fight and defeats Suo in the Fated Clash, she returns back to her own time at least happy that he was able to change his fate and being reunited with him. Although there is no guarantee that she survived the return to her time.
  • Contrasting Replacement Character: Her deck is rather reminiscent of the Gear Chronicle Clan, but while the Gear Chronicle focuses on advancing to a new future they shape themselves, she focuses on changing the past.
  • Cruel to Be Kind: She wants Akina to either quit the Fated Clash or make him lose by convincing Taizo to participate for the sake of ensuring that he will not be caught up in the aftermath of Suo's wish despite knowing that his whole participation was for the sake of her health.
  • Cutting the Knot: Attempted; At the start of her Fated Clash, she asks Gabwelius is if it possible to physically eject the other participants. The only reason she doesn't go through with it is because Gabwelius tells her that it isn't allowed and that Fated cards would interfere with any attempts.
  • Delicate and Sickly: She still retains the sickness of her present self and outright collapsed when handing out flyers for her missing brother. In Episode 13, Akina uses his wish to cure her.
  • Future Badass: Despite not having played Vanguard in years, the moment she became a participant in the Fated Clash, she immediately brought out her old deck and won the whole thing.
  • Hero Antagonist: She wants to stop Akina's participation in the Fated Clash to save his life, which cumulates in her fighting him herself to decide whose desire will come true.
  • No Place for Me There: After Akina manages to change his fate, she outright declares that she has no place in his world anymore and returns to her own time even though it might kill her.
  • Set Right What Once Went Wrong: Her goal is to prevent her brother's death in the Fated Clash by making him quit or drop out before he fights against Suo. However, in a Prophecy Twist, it would turn out that she actually has to help him win the Fated Clash since her Liael゠Amorta is the perfect counter against Suo's Blangdmire.
  • Walking Spoiler: It's hard to talk about "Fox Mask" without mentioning the fact she is Hikari.
  • You Monster!: While she doesn't say this to the person in question, she considers Suo one for his sheer lack of emotion and continued participation in the Fated Clash despite literally desiring nothing.

Other Characters

    Gabwelius

Voiced by: Jun Fukuyama (JP), Dargan Manns (EN)

A strange creature with the appearance of a plush toy who appear to be in charge of organizing and overseeing the Fated Clash.

  • Ambiguously Evil: Masanori can't help but poke holes into the claim that the Fated Clash is fully benevolent and without risk since getting a wish like that is Too Good to Be True, which is not helped by "Fox Mask" saying that all the participants will die.
  • Living Toys: Gabwelius doesn't look like a plush toy, his body actually is one. It's justified as it's not his actual body but one that he is possessing.

    Hikari Myodo
Akina's younger sister who, due to her frail health, often has to stay at the hospital.
  • Delicate and Sickly: Due to her frail constitution, Hikari often has to stay in the hospital for extended periods of time. Her suffering a relapse at the beginning of the series is what leads Akina to agree to participate in the Fated Clash.
