    Alto Goldfield

The Protagonist of the story. An otherwise excellent student of a Wizarding School who struggles with summoning magic, and ends up with a Devil as a Familiar.
  • Accidental Pervert: As an ecchi protagonist, it's bound to happen, though it happens very rarely compared to many other such characters and he has never been punished for the accidents, with the Student Council girls even forgiving him for walking in on them changing since they were the ones to forget to lock the door.
  • Amazon Chaser: Gradually becomes more attracted to Vermeil for her super strength and beauty. He's not put off at all by how powerful she is, and wants to be able to protect her from what few things can threaten her.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: Alto is honest and a nice guy to everyone, but when pushed he's more than willing to violently attack those that harm or threaten the people he cares for.
  • Back from the Dead: Was killed by a rampaging Vermeil in her demon form destroying his heart. She manages to revive him by in essence giving him part of her heart inside his body, linking their lives together.
  • Blessed with Suck: He seems like a stock "weak magic user that grows into something strong" at first, which is the initial attribution to why he can't summon a familiar. In truth, it's the reverse: his mana is too potent to the point where it would poison the familiar, so said familiar outright refuses the summon and contract. The only kind of "familiar" that can handle his mana is a high-tier demon, which would inevitably result in Alto not wearing the pants in the Master-Servant relationship. Fortunately for him and everyone else, the demon he summoned was Vermeil.
  • Can't Live Without You: As of chapter 9.1 Vermeil becomes this for him. In order to save his life when she accidentally destroys his heart, Vermeil transfers part of her own and a lot of her essence into his body to restore him. However, his heart is still technically hers, just in a different body. She can eventually return Alto to normal but states it may take decades for her to restore his heart to the point that it no longer needs her mana to function, and until then if she dies, he dies and vice versa.
  • Character Development: Since he was unable to summon a Familiar, Alto somewhat lacked confidence in himself. Once Vermeil comes into his life and provides him with the abilities to fight even higher ranked students, he gradually grows more confident. When around Vermeil he was understandably nervous at having to kiss her (especially in a rather erotic way), but as he gets to know her, he becomes more willing to kiss to the point he sometimes makes a move on her as opposed to her coming on to him.
  • Chick Magnet: He's got Lilia completely obsessed towards him, Vermeil seriously falls for him over a relatively short span of time, and a lot of girls are now drawn to him after having defeated Chris in a duel (though for more shallow reasons than the prior).
  • Childhood Friend: He and Lilia have been best friends since they were children and have long studied magic together.
  • Covert Pervert:
    • Though he often makes the excuse to himself that he is just too weak-willed to refuse her, the truth is Alto is a lot more into the pleasures Vermeil offers than he might seem at first, only really drawing the line at outright sex (and even this limitation may have ended after they became a couple).
    • After returning to school with her following the incident with Professor Obsidian, Vermeil pulls Alto behind a stairway to make out with him, claiming they need to share mana more often and kiss during school too if he's serious about getting stronger. He initially refuses until she seductively asks if he doesn't want to kiss her (flashing her breasts at him), and he agrees to "one more" which ends up being a lot more and they are next seen late for class.
    • In chapter 20, while initially protesting her presence, after inwardly realizing they are unlikely to have anyone walk in on them Alto ends up inviting Vermeil to stay in the open-air bath with him "just for a little bit". Things inevitably get intimate and the two proceed to make out (and possibly more) in the water for so long that Alto overheats.
  • Deal with the Devil: In his desperation not to be held back a year, ends up using an obscure book in the library and summons a Hot as Hell demon as his Familiar. This is only the trope in technicality, as his deal with Vermeil has no hidden downside nor does she have some secret goal to ruin Alto's life.
  • Declaration of Protection: When the Student Council forces him to reveal that Vermeil is a Demon and that killing him will also kill her, he proclaims he wishes to become stronger so he can protect her.
  • Freshman Fears: Alto is a first-year student at his Wizarding School entering his second year in the first episode, and while he's a star student at every other subject, because he has not been able to summon a Familiar of any kind he's going to be held back a year if he doesn't summon something soon, which is what leads him to summon Vermeil.
  • Gag Penis: Implied, as when he was showering and Vermeil stepped in with him, she took note of his body and seemed rather pleased at what she saw down below.
  • Gemstone Assault: He specializes in making crystal constructs to block, trap, cut, or impale foes.
  • Height Angst: Downplayed but he's implied to have this over his small stature, as when Vermeil questions and teases him over why he has a height measuring device stored in his room he becomes very defensive. He remarks in rapid succession that one should measure themselves every day, that he doesn't care at all that he's short, and that "a growth spurt might happen at any moment!"
  • Ignore the Fanservice: While it obviously affects him, he usually rebuffs Vermeil's advances when they're in public and often begs her to Please Put Some Clothes On whenever she's undressed. When they're alone though he usually ends up submitting to making out with her (among other things) and getting his mana drained, becoming more and more willing as time goes on. By Chapter 17 and onward, after the two realize their feelings for each other, he is less uncomfortable with seeing her naked (provided they aren't in a public place).
  • Impaled with Extreme Prejudice: He gets lethally stabbed by a rampaging Vermeil. Vermeil shares her heart with him to bring him back to life.
  • Interspecies Romance: Alto is a human high-schooler who falls for Vermeil, a demon.
  • Ironic Name: He's quite short, and his name is the Spanish word for "tall".
  • Likes Older Women: He gains feelings for Vermeil, who is hundreds of years old despite physically looking no more than in her mid-20s. And even mid-20s is still noticeably older than he is.
  • Love Confession: Confesses his love for Vermeil after saving her from her own memories plaguing her mind. Vermeil is so overwhelmed she has a Love Epiphany later and confesses the same. The result the following evening features the two, in bed, engaging in their usual make-out sessions, but far more passionate to the point it would be easy to assume the two are engaged in sex (and indeed, its not explicitly said they didn't have sex).
  • Mage Born of Muggles: Vermeil assumes he's the child of powerful mages due to his mana being so potent to be able to handle a Devil, but he reveals both of his parents are normal people who have no talent for magic.
  • Nice Guy: Is always a polite young man to everyone and rarely ever gets truly angry at anyone, so long as you don't threaten his loved ones or allies.
  • Oblivious to Love: He's completely unaware of or in denial about Lilia's obvious crush on him and sees her just as a friend, as he states when Vermeil outright tells him about the crush (though, to be fair, Lilia's rudeness and tsundere behavior could explain why). He's substantially less oblivious over his growing love for Vermeil and her love for him.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: When Vermeil was distancing herself out of guilt for nearly killing him and willing to lock herself away in a book again once his heart is fixed, Alto actually gets pissed and initiates a kiss with her. Considering his usual timidness when it comes to their make-out sessions, this was notable of him.
  • Please Put Some Clothes On: Frequently tells Vermeil this due to her either sleeping in the nude or when he sees her naked. Over time he seems to have mostly given up on this after living together with her, having grown more comfortable around her along with his growing feelings for her.
  • Second Year Protagonist: He actually starts the series as a freshman, being threatened to be held back a grade unless he successfully gets a Familiar. Once he summons Vermeil in the first chapter, he passes and becomes a second-year student from then on.
  • Shower of Awkward: Vermeil follows Alto around everywhere, and that includes the showers, much to his mortification as she makes no secret she's checking him out. He's apparently quite a bit more well-built than his small stature would indicate.
  • The Smart Guy:
    • He's one of the smartest students in his year, with high marks all over the board.
    • During the Bronze Square exam's first test (which consists of pouring mana into a large crystal), he is the only one to deduce that the actual test is to be able to discern what part of the crystal is the most efficient for mana transmission. After making it clear he knows the intended solution, he then picks the least efficient side to prove he is both smart and powerful.
  • Squishy Wizard: His magical power is massive, but while he is not in bad shape he is still lacking in physical strength and athletic capability, forcing him to fight at a distance or rely on Vermeil to protect him from physical attacks. He starts to train with Chris and Jessica in order to try to correct this.
  • Teen Genius: Alto is the top student in his grade at the toughest magic school in the kingdom, with perfect grades in everything (except, initially summoning magic, because his power was too potent). Vermeil accentuates his power, but there is no question he is not leaning on her. He would have excelled even without a demonic familiar.
  • Tiny Guy, Huge Girl: Alto appears to be one of the shortest, if not the shortest student in his year, and gets paired up with Vermeil, a Statuesque Stunner Hot as Hell demon with big boobs. One chapter hints that Alto has a bit of Height Angst, and when Vermeil teases him with the suggestion they check the height difference between them, he reacts badly.
  • To Be a Master: Alto's goal is to achieve the highest level of mage, Platinum Square.
  • Too Spicy for Yog-Sothoth:
    • According to Vermeil, the reason he was unable to summon a familiar before her was that his mana is so potent that, for most familiars, it is the equivalent of poison and, thus, they refused his attempts to summon and contract with them, as they couldn't safely eat his mana anyway. Vermeil, however, loves the taste and feel of such potent mana, and indulges in sucking it out of Alto with a great deal of pleasure.
    • During the Bronze Square test, he pours so much mana into the testing crystal that he wrecks it, even though he was deliberately using the least efficient side to do it. It's noted even a Platinum Square would have had trouble doing this.

    Vermeil

Alto's Devil Familiar. She's mysterious, whimsical, seductive, powerful, and over five hundred years old.
  • Absurdly Sharp Claws: Her demonic form shows off some very large and menacing claws that can pierce through a man's chest with ease.
  • Action Girl: Doesn't shy from combat at all (though she for a while has a complex about fighting in her full demon form) and is much more powerful and experienced than Alto, especially early on.
  • All Women Are Lustful: As a Hot as Hell demon Vermeil is very much interested in anything sex-related with Alto in addition to kissing, groping, and hugging him. That she can absorb mana more efficiently via sex is a bonus. Still, she holds herself back just enough to leave it up to Alto if they go that far.
  • Barbie Doll Anatomy: Even when naked around Alto either in the shower or in bed, both the manga and anime explicitly blocks out the naughty parts of her body or just doesn't draw them even when they should be visible.
  • Because You Were Nice to Me: Vermeil could very easily have killed Alto but was so grateful to be set free from the book she was imprisoned in that she's willing to serve him out of sheer gratitude. It's implied his kindness towards her as a person rather than a monster is what causes her to slowly grow romantic feelings for him. Indeed, it's noted she was sealed with the wish that if she were ever released it would be by someone who could truly love her.
  • Beware the Silly Ones: She's friendly, flirty and a total Cuddle Bug towards Alto, but it would be wise not to piss her off. She can be downright terrifying when pushed hard enough, especially if she starts accessing her transformed state. In one early notable scene, she goes from casually talking about how she doesn't intend to interfere with Obsidian's actions to a Red Eyes, Take Warning state where she warns him she'll tear his body and soul apart if he so much as touches Alto.
  • Big-Breast Pride: Very proud of her enormous bust, she has no shame showing them off and readily uses them to tease and flirt with Alto.
  • Big Eater: While she will binge on sweets, if given the opportunity, this mainly applies to her appetite for sucking out Alto's "thick, potent" mana. Her appetite for mana would easily kill a normal person if she fed on them, and while Alto doesn't suffer more than fatigue, he does repeatedly point out how much Vermeil likes to drain from him. Notably, he finds the toll from supplying mana to the test flame for the Bronze Square exam to be "nothing" compared to what Vermeil sucks out of him on a regular basis. Thankfully for Alto, she is able to fortify and concentrate the mana she takes from him and give it back with a touch, in turn increasing how much she can drain from him without putting him under too much strain. As a child she was shown to be a big eater in general.
  • Bishie Sparkle: She often sparkles for some time after she's taken her fill of mana from Alto, as a sign for the audience of how pleased and satisfied she feels.
  • Buxom Beauty Standard: Vermeil has breasts that are each around the size of her head. Many characters are shown to be impressed by her big rack. Indeed, as yet no one has considered them a negative feature, even Lilia.
  • Can't Act Perverted Toward a Love Interest: Downplayed as while she has no problem showing off her figure or kissing him for his mana (even making out with him for hours), as her feelings for Alto grow this causes her to begin to act somewhat more nervous and shyer at the thought of engaging in certain other activities with him (mostly things to do with emotional intimacy rather than purely physical).
  • Casting Gag: In a bit of Irony, Vermeil is played by Maaya Uchida, whose previous role was the practically-asexual Katarina Claes. Especially since she uses the exact same voice for both characters.
  • Cleavage Window: When Vermeil tried to wear the school uniform, she was only barely able to button the top and bottom buttons, leaving her cleavage completely exposed, effectively combining this trope with Navel-Deep Neckline.
  • Combat Stilettos: She wears high heels for casual and combat, yet they don't hinder her fighting in the slightest.
  • Comically Missing the Point: Has in a few instances seemingly missed the meaning of Alto's words in the interest of serving her own pleasure-seeking habits.
    • She misconstrues Alto's "you should only kiss someone you love" as him meaning that if you love someone and kiss for that instead of to feed then you can kiss them whenever and wherever you want. Then when Alto protests that interpretation she takes it to mean he must want her to drain his mana via kissing now instead and proceeds to do just that.
    • In the anime on a school day after their mutual love confession, Vermeil remarks that since Alto loves her it must mean that now she can kiss him whenever and wherever she wants. She proceeds to straddle him in the grass to make out with him.
    • In a case of Shameless Fanservice Girl, she at one point questions why she feels like she sticks out more in the school compared to before despite wearing the same uniform as everyone else, missing that said uniform is quite small on her and can't contain her breasts. In other words, she doesn't look like the other students at all and earns a lot of stares.
  • Cuddle Bug: Vermeil is very physically affectionate with Alto, leaning on, hugging, groping, caressing, sitting on his lap, or putting him in hers on a frequent basis. While she does enjoy how it flusters him, it's also made clear that she simply enjoys the contact. While she normally is pleased initiating, it's treated as quite a big deal to her when she requests Alto kiss her instead of the other way around. Her affectionate behavior around Alto later becomes more serious as her feelings for him grow to the point she even sometimes becomes flustered around him.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: Even without transforming she can deliver these to anyone under Gold Square rank.
    • Lilia never stood a chance in their duel, as Vermeil didn't even flinch from her attack and proceeded to overpower her with ease.
    • She destroys Obsidian's demon form (that was powered by hundreds of low tier demons) in three punches.
  • Cute Monster Girl: A gorgeous succubus-like demon that can take on some more inhuman traits than a lot of other Hot as Hell demons, such as hoofed feet and fur-covered legs. Her standard demon form has horns, a tail, Cute Little Fangs, and pointed ears.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: Despite her carefree attitude, the glimpses we get at her past look very traumatic (featuring her having a nightmare of her weeping in a destroyed city), causing her to cry in her sleep. Alto witnesses this (given she is cuddled up in bed with him) but ends up deciding it would be better not to pry about her past. We later learn that as a child 500 years ago, she had somehow ended up under the care of a kindly nun with other orphans, only to have a series of events lead to them being horrifically murdered by an angry mob of superstitious townsfolk. Enraged, Vermeil destroyed the entire city in a single burst of power, earning her a reputation as a walking disaster. For two hundred years she would live with the fallout of the event, eventually asking to be sealed away in the book that eventually ended up in Alto's hands.
  • Eating the Eye Candy: When she follows Alto into the shower, she decides to confirm what she suspected when she saw him in the changing room, checking him out and noting he's actually quite well-built as she caresses and feels him up.
  • Everybody Has Standards:
    • She's a Demon who's obsessed with anything sex-related and while she will force herself on Alto for a kiss for his mana, she will not force him to have sex against his will. As while she states having sex would be more efficient for feeding herself than kissing, she respects his boundaries just enough that while she'll go quite far in her seductive feedings, she will ultimately leave that final step to be out of mutual consent and love on both parts.
    • While she does frequently kiss him for his mana since she needs it to maintain her body, even somewhat forceful on her part from her teasing, when Alto questions if she only does it because she wants his mana and nothing more, Vermeil reassures him by kissing him very gently as opposed to her usual erotic kisses and without taking his mana, the implication being that she would only give a kiss like that if she genuinely liked them (though it is some time before her feelings grow to outright love).
  • Fish out of Temporal Water: Vermeil was sealed for hundreds of years before Alto summoned her. She often gets confused by modern terms and had never seen food like parfaits before.
  • Flight: While she doesn't use the ability often (and thus there may be certain restrictions on how long she can do it), she can levitate to fly at will. She has large, bat-like (with feathers) wings in her more monstrous forms, but they apparently aren't necessary for her to fly (or at least float for a time after leaping very high). In chapter 26 she sprouts more standard bat-like demon wings to make a quick escape with Alto from a attack that tears apart the ground under them.
  • Form-Fitting Wardrobe: The sweater she wears tightly shows off her curves to showcase her sex appeal.
  • The Gadfly: She goes along with becoming Alto's familiar, half out of a sense of gratitude from freeing her, half from just thinking being his familiar will be amusing. She takes great pleasure in almost every opportunity to tease or fluster people, especially Alto.
  • Game Face: She sports one of these when she's ready to crush Alto's enemies.
  • Going Commando: Vermeil doesn't wear any undergarments. Ever.
  • Good All Along: While she does have some moments of ambiguity (such as claiming she didn't care what Obsidian did to other people so long as he didn't touch Alto), as she continues to bond with Alto and his friends it becomes clear that despite her background as an infamous demon with a very naughty side, Vermeil is a loyal and good person at heart. It's implied her lack of care early on toward people other than Alto is simply because she has lived for so long believing that pretty much all humans would treat her with hatred or cruelty if they knew what she was, so why should she care about what happens to them? She is honestly surprised to find that people like Lilia can actually be decent toward her.
  • Good Bad Girl: She's very naughty and flirty towards Alto with a lack of shame towards showing off her figure. Yet despite that, along with her being a demon, she's shown to be a Nice Girl underneath her behavior.
  • Head-Turning Beauty: All the boys in the school are completely in awe of both her looks and breasts.
  • Healing Factor: Since it's hard to hurt her much, to begin with, this ability doesn't show up as often as a lot of examples of the trope, but Vermeil explicitly is noted by Alto to be able to heal quickly from wounds (the context being getting worried when Vermeil is fighting an opponent who heals even faster than she does).
  • Hidden Depths: Vermeil is a Proud Beauty who frequently teases Alto and his friends, but deep down in Chapter 9.3 reveals she actually is very insecure with herself, viewing herself as an evil ugly monster meant to kill to the point she tells Alto he shouldn't even be around her after nearly killing him during her rampage.
  • Horned Humanoid: She has a pair of small horns sprouting out of her head. As a child she hid them with some ribbons (until one of them came off and revealed it), but now she's able to make them invisible to pass for a human.
  • Hot as Hell: She's a Devil and obviously the "sexpot" kind, complete with horns, a devil's tail an attractive figure, and a flirtatious personality. Her powers are also sex-related as she powers up via Magic Kiss and has Living Aphrodisiac and Orgasmatron powers that can cause people to have a Forced Orgasm. She also notes that she can absorb mana more effectively via sex, only being satisfied with kissing and fondling out of consideration for Alto. After their mutual Love Confession there are implications they have started having sex outright, though it’s not been explicitly confirmed so far. In one case Vermeil seduces Alto in an open-air bath with them both ending up naked and spending a lot of time in it. We next see Alto exhausted and overheated, and Vermeil radiant with satisfaction (whether from a good feeding, sex, or both, being unclear).
  • I Am a Monster: After the incident with Obsidian forcing her to transform into her full demon form, along with briefly killing Alto causes her to believe herself nothing but an ugly, evil demon of a woman who shouldn't be around Alto more than she already has to be.
    • Turns out she's felt this way for a very long time following the destructive aftermath of her killing the ones who murdered her family. It eventually led to her voluntarily having herself sealed in the book for the next 300 years before it found its way to Alto.
  • Iconic Outfit: The Virgin Killer sweater. While she also tried wearing just a jacket and pants, or the school uniform, she's soon back in the black sweater.
  • Insecure Love Interest: A very understandable example of this trope. After the incident with Obsidian where he forced her into her demon form and nearly killed Alto, Vermeil understandably became distant from him out of shame and horror from her actions with her admitting to Alto they shouldn't even be in the same room, referring to herself as an "ugly, evil demon". Chapter 10 has Lilia even having to give her a pep talk to help her see it wasn't her fault nor does Alto think badly of her.
  • Interspecies Romance: Vermeil, a Demon, begins to fall in love with Alto, a human who's still in high school.
  • It's All My Fault: Fully blames herself for nearly killing Alto and blowing her cover as his Familiar with the President now knowing the truth about her. It takes a pep talk from Alto and Lilia to help her see she's not to blame but Obsidian. Also, when Alto sees the memories of her past, it's shown that she still blames herself for the deaths of her adoptive family, as they told her to run away while they stayed behind to protect her from the superstitious villagers.
  • Jerkass Realization: Played for drama when she realizes she is treating Noa as a threat for no reason other than her being a demon, and how this echoes how the villagers who murdered her adoptive family thought. Her guilt is short-lived as she realizes her error quickly and Alto reassures her that he knows she was only trying to protect him.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: Her initial dismissal of Obsidian's inhuman experiments leads to her immediately falling victim to them. This leads to quite a bit of Character Development for her as she takes the lesson to heart.
  • Love Confession: Confesses her feelings near the end of chapter 17, after Alto does the same earlier in the chapter. The night ends with the two engaging in a very passionate make out session with him on top of her while she wraps her arms and legs around him naked. Whether they went all the way or not that night is unclear.
  • Luminescent Blush: Once Vermeil begins to develop feelings for Alto she has this at times, such as when he kissed her and pinned her to a wall snapping at her for wanting to leave out of guilt, she turned bright red after he left.
  • Made of Iron: It takes a lot of power for Vermeil to even feel pain, let alone take actual damage, so it's not unusual for her to simply take an attack head-on or block it by casually raising her arms. Her skin is so tough that she has no real use for armor and isn't inconvenienced at all fighting in the nude. That Chris is legitimately powerful is made clear when Vermeil actually finds it painful to block her fire attacks (though even then Chris is amazed that so little damage is done). When Shinouji threatens her with levitating knives she pointedly shows they can't actually hurt her by crushing one in one bare hand and asks if he thinks he can actually stop her with such things.
  • Magic Skirt: In spite of how very incredibly short the bottom of her Virgin Killer sweater is, plus the fact she's Going Commando, her nether regions are never flashed onscreen.
  • Male Gaze: Both her ass and her breasts get a lot of focus.
  • Marshmallow Hell: She just loves to press her generous breasts into Alto's face or pull him into them.
  • Meaningful Name: Vermeil is gilded metal. The character Vermeil is incredibly strong and her Battle Aura and magical energy are colored gold, which several characters note is an unusual color (eventually revealed to be the color of demon mana).
  • Ms. Fanservice: She's a Head-Turning Beauty Hot as Hell demon who constantly gets naked and acts seductively. She quickly gains a following of male students who live to ogle her (and are actually very appreciative to Alto for his presence meaning they get to see her).
  • Mysterious Past: Vermeil's origins are as of yet a big question mark. She remembers nothing from before she was as a child taken in by a kindly nun over five centuries ago. At the time she didn't even know she was a demon. Interestingly, the one other demon so far met in the series, Noa, has a similar origin in being found as a child with no knowledge of what she is.
  • Naked on Arrival: How Vermeil is introduced in Alto's narration, and how she is when first summoned.
  • Navel-Deep Neckline: Once her usual outfit was ruined after the ordeal with Obsidian, she was forced to wear a school uniform till she got another one, but because of how large her breasts are she had to leave the front unbuttoned; showing a large amount of her cleavage, much to the delight of Alto's male classmates.
  • Nice Girl: Once you get past her playful and naughty behavior, she's a sweet Cuddle Bug to be around.
  • No Sense of Personal Space: Specifically with Alto, personal space may as well not exist to Vermeil. From the moment they meet she slides up against him with practiced ease and never holds back (aside from a short time following a rather traumatic event where she nearly kills him).
  • Older Than They Look: She had been sealed inside the book Alto found for three hundred years and was a child five centuries ago, yet looks like she'd be no older than in her mid-20s.
  • One Head Taller: A rare gender inversion, as her Love Interest, Alto, only comes up only to her chest. Marshmallow Hell ensues on a frequent basis.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: She greatly enjoys kissing Alto for his mana, as well as simply for affection, and tends to make out with him for long periods. Yet, after the Obsidian incident where she gave Alto a fatal wound, she actually tries to keep their kisses to the bare minimum needed and leave him be without teasing or flirting with him, and not talking much to him in general either. Alto was rather shocked and disturbed by her distant behavior, leading to them confronting Vermeil's fears regarding their relationship.
  • Partial Transformation: In her battle against Peridot she demonstrates that, aside from her progressively monstrous transformations, she can also tap into her true demon form strength via a partial transformation, in this case gaining her huge clawed arms and longer horns but maintaining her human legs.
  • Person of Mass Destruction: Vermeil's combat powers as a demon are focused squarely on the ability to destroy what she targets (it's revealed that different demons have powers that specialize in different things, Vermeil's is destruction), or everything around her if she is pushed far enough (as happened when she was a child). In the anime, Iolite claims Vermeil's true strength is great even among demons, and in the manga, Fatima says something similar. As she and Alto learn to focus and refine this, the power is explored in a variety of ways. Notably, she can use it to destroy immaterial things and thus avoid harming the actual body, as when Alto at one point uses power she imbued him with to destroy the contract of a bound demon, freeing them from servitude.
  • Prehensile Tail: She can use her tail as a third limb.
  • Proud Beauty: Almost always seen with a confident smile on her face as she shamelessly flaunts her looks. Chapter 9.3 reveals that this is partly a façade and that deep down she has a low opinion of her true demon form, owing to tragic events in her past and briefly killing Alto.
  • Really 700 Years Old: Vermeil is over five centuries old but could for someone in their mid-20s.
  • Sealed Evil in a Can: She has been sealed inside a book hidden in the library for a very long time, and admits she deserved it for the evil actions that she's done. Chapter 15.2 reveals she asked to be sealed personally.
  • Sexy Backless Outfit: The black clothes she wears leave most of her back exposed. It's a type of sweater known as a "Virgin Killer."
  • Sex Goddess: Boasts about being one, due to her nature as a Hot as Hell demon, and early on shows she can bring someone to orgasm in a matter of seconds with just her hands and a bit of magic. She's rather miffed Alto holds back from finding out for himself when she first suggests trying sex out. She'll often use forms of pleasurable foreplay before kissing him that would be just as effective during coitus, such as blowing on his ear or feeling up his chest after unbuttoning his shirt, and can keep Alto awake all night kissing and fondling him. After their mutual Love Confession she may have started demonstrating her sexual skills on him outright.
  • Shameless Fanservice Girl: As fitting for a Hot as Hell demon, Vermeil doesn't care about modesty or being seen naked and just covers herself up due to Alto constantly asking her to do so. She also doesn't wear any undergarments and Sleeps in the Nude. Even after fully falling in love with Alto this remains mostly the same, though she can get a bit flustered now if it is Alto looking at her, simply because of how it makes her heart pound with excitement and pleasure.
  • Shared Life Energy: Can do this in an emergency. She does so to save Alto's life, the two gaining linked lives in the process.
  • Single Woman Seeks Good Man: She begins to fall in love with Alto for his kindness and treating her as a person rather than a monster as compared to most people she's met in her life. It helps that he has great potential as a mage and a drive to become stronger.
  • Sleeps in the Nude: She already only wears clothes during the day at Alto's request, but no matter how often he begs she still takes them off when she goes to sleep.
  • Statuesque Stunner: She stands head and shoulders above Alto, enabling a lot of Marshmallow Hell situations, and is taller than even senior students. When circumstances lead to her wearing a school uniform for a time, even the largest size is too small to contain her breasts and her sheer height leaves her with a very short-looking skirt.
  • Succubus in Love: While succubi are name-dropped as existing, it isn't clear yet if Vermeil herself is one. Yet her nature, powers, etc. are close enough to qualify for the trope. Sure enough, it is realizing Alto doesn't just lust for her but loves her, and later realizing how in love she has fallen that makes her blush and impacts her confidence. She even panics a bit that she could be ill or damaged in some way when she notices how her body starts to feel around Alto (raised heart rate and such). Her inexperience with love doesn't impair her long though, as that same love ends up making her even more passionate.
  • Super Mode: Or "serious mode" as it gets called unofficially. Should she be pressed enough she can take on increasingly monstrous forms (larger size, longer horns, heavily distorted skull) to the point that her huge breasts become the only thing recognizably feminine about her. While first seen as a berserk monstrosity of the form, she later learns to access its strength in a more controlled way that only transforms her arms, horns, tail and lengthens her canines.
  • Sweet Tooth: Once she's introduced to sweets such as Parfaits, Vermeil becomes deeply interested in them to the point she frequently asks Alto to buy some when they go grocery shopping. Should the topic of food come up she will pretty inevitably mention she wants sweets or wants to see what kinds are on offer. Alto's mana is the only thing that competes for being her favorite thing to eat.
  • Tears of Blood: Has exhibited these twice in her monstrous transformations as a result of emotional trauma. The first when her adoptive family were hung by a bunch of superstitious villagers and the second was when she briefly killed Alto during a fit of induced madness.
  • Traumatic Superpower Awakening: 500 years ago, as a child, she finds the corpses of her adoptive family, and it triggers her demonic powers, destroying the entire city and killing the angry mob responsible for her family's murder.
  • The Tease: Vermeil is constantly teasing Alto, invading his personal space, and acting flirtatious and seductive. Goes to some extremes in that while she does hold back from having sex with him without his consent, she still readily makes out with and fondles him, her mana-draining process going well beyond simply kissing him.
  • Tranquil Fury: When truly pissed she maintains a calm look as she savagely mauls Obsidian's demonic form to pieces without saying a word and bloodshot eyes for forcing her into a maddened state that led to her harming Alto.
  • Used to Be a Sweet Kid: Back 550 years ago, Vermeil was a sweet, innocent child until the events of her Dark and Troubled Past kicked in.
  • Underestimating Badassery: Since she uses magic to hide her non-human features, some people early in the series think Vermeil is a mere human and cannot protect Alto, only for her to easily beat them up and their familiars.
  • Vampiric Draining: Vermeil's most frequently used power involves her ability to drain a person's mana via a deep kiss. That she can also drain more efficiently through outright sex, and the effort she usually makes to stimulate Alto in various ways before and during a kiss (including the kiss itself usually being open-mouthed and passionate with plenty of tongue use) imply that her target's arousal level helps with the feeding too. For her it is a necessary activity to keep her body intact after centuries of being sealed, but she also plainly derives great physical and emotional pleasure from it thanks to how delicious and potent Alto's mana is for her, outright licking her lips over it at times. While she notes a normal person would be drained to death or explode from such activities with a demon, Alto's powerful enough that he never suffers worse than fatigue from her feedings (which can go on for hours of vigorous making out), and Vermeil can alleviate that fatigue by giving mana back to him with a touch (and can condense and enhance the mana as well). Albeit, Vermeil notes she could still kill him by draining him dry if she wanted to. Once their lives become linked, her kisses with him gain an extra dimension, as he becomes able to suck mana out of her too, leading to them sucking each other's energy out in turn.
  • Vapor Wear: In addition to Going Commando, Vermeil wears no brassiere either, seen both by the backless Virgin Killer Sweater and the time she briefly tried to wear a school uniform. Although judging from their size, there might not be one in existence big enough. In any case, she seems categorically opposed to wearing any kind of underwear (or at least the issue has never been brought up).
  • Victory by Endurance: How she defeats Peridot, an antagonistic Platinum Square, in a drawn-out fist fight. When she proves to be a match for her in physical strength and durability, Vermeil opts to use the power of her strikes to whittle down the reserves of water the mage uses as fuel to empower and heal herself until her opponent has nothing left to draw on and finally collapses. Keep in mind this involved her working through a lake's worth of water.
  • Violently Protective Girlfriend: While she's not his girlfriend at first, Vermeil is very protective of Alto. She coldly told off Professor Obsidian for using his dark magic and threatened that if he ever touched Alto, she would rip his body and soul to shreds. After briefly killing Alto in her demon form thanks to Obsidian injecting her with a serum to force her into a berserker state, she keeps on her promise and violently brutalizes him and only refrains from killing him due to knowing Alto would not want that. Later, upon seeing another demon near Alto, Vermeil scares the girl half to death out of the belief the little demon means Alto harm.
  • Womanchild: She has a few childish quirks, like having a sweet tooth or pouting when she doesn't get her way. Considering she never fully matured due to her past trauma, this is understandable.
  • Women Prefer Strong Men:
    • As her feelings for Alto grow, she begins to become more drawn to him when he becomes more assertive or confident, whether it's in his efforts in school or when he kisses Vermeil without her making the move first, something that can make her blush. She still enjoys taking the lead most of the time but doesn't want the affection to be all one-sided. Also, early in the series, she is very positive toward Alto's goal of becoming an incredible mage, viewing such a drive for power as a sign she chose the right master.
Vermeil: Ahh... my demon blood is boiling! That's a fine wish!
    • During the Bronze Square exam, she goads Alto into showing off his full strength instead of passing the exam the intended way, to really "scare the hell out of all of them," and is quite amorous with him afterward, implied to be in part due to how watching him in action made her feel quite proud and aroused (she says it's just to refill his mana reserves after he used so much, but makes out with him for so long that he's almost late for the second part of the exam).
  • World's Most Beautiful Woman: Nearly all the male students in the school are drawn to her beauty to the point that Alto's classmates appreciate him simply for enabling them to experience Vermeil's presence.
  • Wounded Gazelle Gambit: Despite being incredibly powerful, early in the series she likes to pretend she's weak and scared when confronted by others, mostly because it makes her Curb-Stomp Battle all the more satisfying when her opponent gets arrogant. This rapidly ceases to work through thanks to how extreme her demonstrations of power are, meaning word gets around quickly that she is much more powerful than she appears.
  • You Are Better Than You Think You Are: In Chapter 10 she begins to distance herself from Alto out of guilt for briefly killing him and forcing him to share a link with her heart to revive him. Lilia finds her and talks her out of her guilt reminding her that just because she's a demon doesn't mean she's a bad person and that as a Familiar, the one who summoned her is prepared to put their lives on the line to protect them.

Supporting Cast

    Lilia Kudelfelt

Alto's classmate and childhood friend.
  • All Love Is Unrequited: Sadly for Lilia, Alto seems to view her as just a friend not even noticing her feelings for him coupled with his growing relationship with Vermeil beginning to blossom into romance.
  • All Women Are Lustful: Nevermind the Succubus, Lilia is so thirsty for Alto that she makes Vermeil look tame half the time. When she manages to get Alto to study alone with her during their second year she basically goes crazy with lust for him, taking off her clothes with barely an excuse and trying to get him to do the same in the hopes that the study session can become an excuse for sex. All Played for Laughs of course.
  • Blow You Away: Her familiar is a wind spirit appropriately named Sylphid who assists her in summoning massive wind attacks.
  • Bunny-Ears Lawyer: Despite her obsession with Alto and being the butt of many jokes, Lilia is a naturally talented mage with a high class wind spirit as her familiar, as Vermeil notes. It also says something that she was handpicked by the Headmaster as a candidate for Class Representative. Whenever a class test is shown she will usually perform well above average, only outdone by prodigies like Alto.
  • Butt-Monkey: She has been humiliated in various story events, which is Played for Laughs as they are usually consequences of her own ill-conceived behavior.
  • Childhood Friend: She and Alto have been best friends since they were children and even studied magic together.
  • Clingy Jealous Girl: Lilia gets extremely jealous when she sees Alto around Vermeil — or any other girl.
  • Covert Pervert: She sometimes let's slip that she's not as innocent as she looks, such as preparing an invisible potion to sneak into Alto's room, or having lewd fantasies about him. She lets slip her true desires so frequently in her actions and words that the "covert" part may be debatable.
  • Deconstructed Character Archetype: Of the Hopeless Suitor and Tsundere tropes. Lilia is clearly crushing on Alto and wants to be with him, but his growing bond with Vermeil since taking her as his Familiar coupled with Lilia's stubbornness and inability to talk to him properly without being rude makes it her own fault that she can't get him to see her like he sees Vermeil. Worse is that Alto clearly cares for her, but only as a friend because of how she treats him half the time, which would make it obvious that he'd be oblivious towards her feelings because her Tsundere attitude towards him without properly being more civil towards him, which plays her lack of progress towards a relationship with him straight.
  • Everybody Has Standards: She's pretty bitchy at times when she wants to be, but she doesn't discriminate. As even after learning that Vermeil was a Demon, she views her as a person and her rival.
  • Fiery Redhead: Her red hair comes along with her feisty and competitive personality.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: Not just Vermeil, but any other girl showing interest in Alto is enough to send her in vindictive rage.
  • Hidden Buxom: While nowhere near as busty as Vermeil, when shown naked or in her underwear Lilia shows she's got quite a noticeable bust.
  • Hopeless Suitor: Deconstructed. She's clearly crushing hard on Alto and wants to be his girlfriend, but her inability to talk to him properly from her Tsundere behavior, coupled with Alto and Vermeil growing closer together makes her hopelessness at being with him primarily her own fault to just try and tell him. Worse is that even when he's been told that she likes him, he doesn't believe it due to how she usually behaves around him, making it hard for him to truly see how she feels about him.
  • In the Blood: Unlike Alto, she's from a family of mages and high rank ones at that.
  • Invisible Streaker: She has a potion that can turn her invisible, but not her clothing. The first time ends up with her naked in front of Alto when it wears off, and the second she isn't caught but Alto accidentally touches her nipple while invisible.
  • I Want My Beloved to Be Happy: Downplayed. Lilia seems to become more accepting once she witnesses how deep Vermeil and Alto's bond is, and steps aside instead of trying to stop their intimacy, complete with her bittersweetly thinking about what she saw happen between them. However, she doesn't appear to have given up entirely, and later is back to her antics of trying to get Alto's attention and "save" him from the possible attentions of other women.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: She's harsh and a Tsundere towards Alto and doesn't hide her jealousy towards Vermeil, but Lilia is shown to be a good person at heart and truly cares for those close to her. The gold side is shown fully when she breaks Vermeil out of her depression from the incident with Obsidian, something Vermeil notes that she's nicer than she looks.
  • Murder Is the Best Solution: Played for Laughs. Whenever she's really pissed she'll grab a rock (or rip a brick out of the ground in the anime) and threaten to kill the cause of her anger, only to be held back by a friend.
  • Overshadowed by Awesome: Lilia is by most standards a very talented sorcerer, with more aptitude and potential than most even at the prestigious academy they are enrolled in. She qualified as a Bronze Square, and seems to have the potential for at least Silver. Yet, since in the story she often finds herself around people who are Gold or Platinum rank (or in the running to be), she tends to look weak or helpless in comparison and often can't contribute much directly in conflicts.
  • Pet the Dog: Despite still not really liking Vermeil, she talks her out of her depression reminding her Alto needs her and reassuring her she's better than she thinks she is.
  • Reluctant Fanservice Girl: Unlike Vermeil, her loss of clothing and embarrassing situations are usually against her will, although she is a Covert Pervert and does want to have sex with him.
  • Shoo Out the Clowns: While she can be serious when the situation calls for it, Lilia is primarily as source of humor and (reluctant) Fanservice, and as such she's not present for Rex's demonic magic-induced attack. Averted later when she's present to see Vermeil's true form manifesting while she's controlled by Obsidian. Then played straight when she is forced away from the conflict between the first Platinum Square villain and Alto.
  • Stalker with a Crush: Lilia's obsessed with Alto and at one point accidentally admits to making invisibility potions with the intention of sneaking into his room (which she actually does). Later on it turns out she somehow acquired a key to his room, too.
  • Teeth-Clenched Teamwork: After beating Lilia in a Wizard Duel, Alto orders her and Vermeil to get along, forcing the two women to reluctantly tolerate the other.
  • Tsundere: She's obviously attracted to Alto, but is also routinely yelling at him out of embarrassment or jealousy. She avoids being a violent version of this trope though, instead using threats of violence against people other than Alto who agitate her.
  • Unlucky Childhood Friend: Although she has feelings for Alto, his inability to recognize them (due to her Tsundere nature) and growing bond with Vermeil shows it's unlikely they will be returned.
  • Womanchild: She often lets her jealousy towards Alto with Vermeil get the better of her, throwing tantrums or trying to spy on him with her invisibility potion.

    Marx Pearlston

Alto's self-proclaimed rival and classmate.
  • Blue Blood: Lilia claims he comes from a prestigious family with ties to the ruling government.
  • Inept Mage: According to Charol, he is failing all nine of his classes. His Familiar is also a joke, being a tiny beetle with no special powers.
  • In the Blood: His family comes from a distinguished line of mages.
  • Large Ham: He's always acting in a dramatic and larger-than-life manner.
  • Nepotism: As yet unconfirmed, but his powerful connections may be how he managed to get into a school as elite as Ortigia despite his poor grades.
  • Overshadowed by Awesome: As weak and incompetent as he looks, outside of Orteiga, at some other academy, he'd likely be a good student. He qualified as a Bronze Square, if only just barely, but that still makes him better than 90% of all other magic students in the kingdom.
  • The Rival: He's Alto's self-proclaimed rival. Unlike most examples, he's actually a friendly rival and constantly admires Alto's accomplishments, as it motivates him to do better.
  • Squishy Wizard: He is non-athletic and gases himself just from running a bit.

The Student Council president. She is said to be the most powerful of all the current students, on track to being recognized as a Platinum mage despite still being in school.
  • Asskicking Leads to Leadership : Needless to say, the Student Council president is also the most powerful student (not counting Alto's potential with Vermeil). It's implied the position requires great power as Elena is tasked with enforcing rules and protecting the peace in the school when necessary.
  • Dimensional Cutter: Her magic appears to be an inversion of this. Rather than cutting into other dimensions with her sword, her sword instead seems to summon "diverging world lines" that she manipulates to cut into things for her, making them effectively unblockable. It is called a type of "Parallel World Magic" and until Elena created the technique it was deemed merely theoretical.
  • Empathic Weapon: Her Familiar is apparently a sword with a blinking red-and-black eye in the crossguard. It seems very powerful, and it might be an Evil Weapon or a captive demon (though nothing has been said about it thus far).
  • Forgiving the Accidental Pervert: Elena isn't mad about Alto accidentally walking in on her, Chirs, and Jessica while they're changing. Unlike the indigent Jessica, she fully recognizes it as a genuine accident, as they forget to lock the door to the student council room.
  • Knight Templar: She rather quickly belies her innocent and pure looks when it comes to rule-breakers.
  • Magic Knight: She uses a sword to cast or enhance her spells.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: She keeps Vermeil's real species a secret, arguing that, as long as she doesn't cause trouble, there's no reason to meddle with another student's familiar. Then again, she won't hesitate to kill Alto if that's what it takes to stop Vermeil.
  • Secret-Keeper: She knows that Vermeil is a Demon.
  • Shameless Fanservice Girl: When Alto accidentally walks in on her, Chris, and Jessica changing clothes, she says she doesn't care about being seen and teases Jessica for getting embarrassed.
  • Student Council President: The Student Council president of Ortigia Academy.

A member of the Student Council. Leader of the Dragon Riders
  • Alpha Bitch: Leader of the Dragonriders. She beats Rex to a bloody pulp for losing to Alto and disrespecting her. In her mind, this was a simple punishment though, as she and Rex actually are (or were) fairly close and have known each other for years. She gets nicer after losing to Alto.
  • Childhood Friends: It turns out she was friends with Rex when they were little before drifting apart as they got older for unseen reasons. Following her duel with Alto and Rex's rampage by Obsidian's hands, they seem to be mending fences with each other.
  • Commissar Cap: As shown in her picture, she wears a peaked cap with her uniform.
  • Dragon Rider: Has a very powerful dragon as her Familiar, and is the head of an entire club of Dragon Riders, no less. It's given her something of a superiority complex.
  • Everyone Has Standards: When Alto first challenges her to a duel she gave him the chance to back out given how far she outclasses him in terms of skill and power (from her POV at least).
  • Expy: She heavily resembles Tanya, particularly when she's getting too deep in her Blood Knight mode.
  • Forgiving the Accidental Pervert: Like Elena above, she isn't mad about Alto's accidentally walking in on them changing.
  • Hand Blast: Her main mode of attack is shooting magical blasts from her Finger Gun.
  • Hidden Buxom: Downplayed. She is clearly well-endowed, but her uniform hides how stacked she really is. It turns out that she actually has the largest breasts of all the female Student Council members, as seen when Alto accidentally walks in on them changing.
  • Inconsistent Spelling:: Kurys (manga) or Chris (Hi Dive subs).
  • Kung-Fu Wizard: She's a skilled and powerful mage, and no slouch in physical combat.
  • Magic Skirt: Averted. In her introduction and her battle with Alto, she is subject to numerous upskirts that leave her panties in clear view.
  • Ms. Fanservice: While not on the same level as Vermeil or Lilia, she still wears the same short skirt as all the other girls (that is not a Magic Skirt) and has very large breasts despite her small frame. She also shrugs off Alto walking in on her changing, and for a physical training session she wears a tight tube top and shorts.
  • Playing with Fire: She uses fire spells that are powerful enough to break crystals and hurt Vermeil.
  • Shameless Fanservice Girl: Like Elena, she doesn't care about being seen undressed and teases Jessica for getting embarrassed. She likewise is not bothered at all when her underwear is in clear view while she climbs to mount her dragon for a big flight in a later chapter.
  • Took a Level in Kindness: Losing her duel to Alto seems to have knocked some humility into her, most notably in her treatment of Rex, who she mercilessly beat the snot out of previously.
  • Used to Be a Sweet Kid: Flashbacks show that she was a lot nicer and gentler. How she became such a jerk in the present hasn't been revealed yet, though it’s implied Elena's harsh expectations of her played a part.

A member of the Student Council. He currently occupies the position of vice president.
  • Master of the Levitating Blades: His magic seems to involve the summoning and control of blades, as seen when he threatens Vermeil during Alto's interrogation. Confirmed later on when his mentor is shown to be the best at levitation magic in the world.
  • Mundane Utility: As a prodigy at levitation magic, he's been seen using it to sign multiple stacks of papers and pour himself tea, all at the same time.
  • Number Two: To Elena, as her vice-president.
  • Secret-Keeper: He knows that Vermeil is a Demon.
  • Stoic Spectacles: He is very calm and collected, almost cold.
    Jessica

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/jessica_schwartz.png
A member of the Student Council. On the council, she is responsible for the enforcement of dueling rules.
  • Chaste Hero: Played for Laughs. When Alto walks in on the girl's changing, she is incredulous, later on screaming how a woman's bare body should only be seen by her husband. Elena remarks that she is a surprisingly old-fashioned/pure person when it comes to such things (not that this stops her from wearing a fairly revealing swimsuit).
  • Hero-Worshipper: She deeply admires Elena, and is her seemingly strongest supporter on the student council.
  • Royal Rapier: She carries a rapier, befitting her overall duelist motif.
  • Secret-Keeper: She knows that Vermeil is a Demon. She's not happy at keeping the secret, but abides by Elena's decision.

A teacher at the academy, his looks and charisma make him quite popular with the female students. He is soon revealed to actually be working for the group of antagonistic Platinum Squares that Iolite belongs to.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: Poses as a kindly, soft-spoken teacher, when in truth he's carrying out illegal magical experiments that put the students at risk.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: Is subjected to one by Vermeil once she shakes off the effects of his serum. She doesn't even need to transform to overpower and annihilate his Super Mode.
  • Dirty Coward: The minute he realizes Vermeil is stronger than even his monstrous hybrid form, he begs for his life like a sniveling coward. If not for Alto's plea for Vermeil not to kill anyone, she most certainly would have killed him.
  • Evil Is Hammy: A specialty of his voice actor. He gets downright theatrical after revealing his true personality.
  • Four Eyes, Zero Soul: Complete with the Scary Shiny Glasses when he's being particularly sneaky.
  • Hot Teacher: He was very popular at school for his looks, and he exploited it for all that's worth.
  • Humanoid Abomination: When he injects himself with the demonic serum he created from the essence of hundreds of low tier demons, he transforms into a large humanoid with eyes all over his body.
  • Small Role, Big Impact: He is a Starter Villain and little else, but he is the main reason the subsequent arcs of the manga happened. By making Vermeil go berserk, he brought her to the attention of both the Student Council and the Platinum Squares. Said event also led to Alto being mortally injured by a berserk Vermeil, who has to share her mana and heart with him to bring him back to life, which greatly changes the nature of their relationship.
  • Smug Snake: He acts just like the usual Diabolical Mastermind that has made everyone around him into pawns... until it comes the time to actually put his Evil Plan into motion. To say he underestimated how strong Vermeil is would be a massive understatement. What he had with her can barely be called a fight.
  • Starter Villain: He is the first actively malevolent force the protagonists have to fight.
  • Teacher/Student Romance: Deconstructed. He pursues a relationship with one of his students, clearly abusing her feelings for him in order to turn her into an Unwitting Test Subject.
  • Villainous Breakdown: After witnessing Vermeil bring Alto back to life, he goes mad, turns himself into a demon-hybrid, and tries to kill her.

A (revoked) Platinum Square, this starry-eyed young man is as whimsical as he is ruthless. He's a member of a mysterious group of renegade Platinum Square mages who seek the powers of demons for world-altering ends.

  • Curb-Stomp Battle: Upon his first meeting with them he delivers one to Vermeil, Alto and Colonel Franks all at the same time. Even Alto going into a state of Unstoppable Rage only makes him bring out his "knight" (a centaur-like creature) to incapacitate him with ease, and Vermeil taking on her "serious" form is handled by him summoning up the same sealing chains Obsidian used on her but a ton more of them so that even she can't hope to break them on her own. The only reason he doesn't simply end things then and there is that he notices something special hidden about Alto that for the time being makes him change his mind about taking Vermeil with him. In the anime things go a bit differently, with him preparing to really fight seriously only to be forced to retreat after his partner Heliodol warns she can no longer keep reinforcements from arriving.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: He'll kill a random student at the drop of a hat, but states he considers taking hostages to be beneath him.
  • Last-Second Showoff: While pretending to be a student, he apparently falls asleep during a test, then when he wakes up, he finishes it in seconds and mocks the others for being slow. In the anime it is stated he passed every rank of mage exam with a perfect score back when he was in school.
  • Red Baron: Known as Heaven's Command Iolite, he's currently the youngest mage to ever be awarded a Platinum rank. His ability to "create life" in the form of giant stone golems he commands makes him a god-like prodigy.
  • Wing Ding Eyes: Often depicted with stars in his pupils to showcase his whimsical nature.
