  • High-Class Glass: In place of Otoya’s mask, he wears a monocle.

  • Palette Swap: His outfit is almost identical to Otoyarsène’s, except that his is green.
  • Paper-Thin Disguise: He wears even less disguise than Otoyarsène, yet somehow gets away with being recognized just as fine. At least the latter has a mask.
  • Voluntary Shapeshifting: He can willfully transform into a cat.

”Hold it right there! Don’t think you’re going to get away when I, Kurustin, am the one chasing you!”

An inspector who spends the days racking his brain for a way to catch the thieves Otoyarsène and Cecíl.

  • Badass Longcoat
  • Badass Normal: He’s neither a genius nor able to use magic, and even when compared to his partner Shinomirade he falls behind for not being an One-Man Army, but he’s still a competent inspector who can kick ass under convenient circumstances.
  • Expy: Of Inspector Ganimard in Arsène Lupin.
  • Height Angst: Just like his actor, he doesn’t take any jabs at his height very kindly.
  • Pint-Sized Powerhouse: He’s short-statured, but can absolutely throw some hands into the criminal’s face.

    Shinomirade

Played by: Natsuki Shinomiya

  • One-Man Army: Kurustin claims that he "can't take on this many guys at once like Shinomirade", hinting at Shinomirade‘s strength.
  • Shout-Out Theme Naming: His name is apparently inspired by Inspector Lestrade, though he himself is not very Inspector Lestrade as he is capable of bursting a whole gang of thieves on his own.

    James Renarty

Hero of Justice: Lightwing Events included

    Hideo Syozawa/Lightwing

Played by: Syo Kurusu

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/8e24655c_8f23_4877_97b5_5dc6700de20e.jpeg

A down-on-his-luck businessman who got implanted with a Hero Seed after an accident, which transformed him into the hero of justice Lightwing.

    Professor Toki

Professor Toki/Tokinose

Played by: Tokiya Ichinose

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/13194fb1_51a0_467c_bbd5_f8ff847ceefd.jpeg

”I'm Professor Tokinose of Hero Lab.”

The professor who collaborated with the government agency Hero Lab, Toki is a genius scientist who has an obsession with creating true heroes and some...unique quirks.

  • Defector from Decadence: He used to work for the Android Project at the Change Chamber, but when he realized it was a corrupted facility that aimed for shady purposes, he released Cess from it, then planned for his own defection after he would finish the Hero Seed recreation.
  • Fatherly Scientist: He took an active role in shaping Cess into the good-natured, human-loving android he is now.
  • Gadgeteer Genius: He singlehandedly creates Lightwing’s suit, equipments and training machines.
  • Giver of Lame Names: His inventions have ridiculously long and and too literal names, such as the "Strong as a Rampaging Homunculus Glove". Lightwing calls him out on it quite often.
Lightwing: "Even if he's got no naming sense, Professor Toki's inventions seriously rock!"
  • Humans Are Special: He has this viewpoint, believing that a true hero can only be born from human and whatever artificial humanoids with enhanced strength the Change Chamber wanted him to create was the exact opposite of his ideal.
  • Mad Scientist: A handsome one on the side of good, but still. He’s so single-minded in his goal to shape Syozawa into the perfect hero that it makes him a little unhinged sometimes - from training machines with crazy names and equally crazy methods, to inviting Syozawa to kill him after revealing the truth about Hero Seed to the hero.
  • Not Afraid to Die: In Episode 8 of the Seize the Desire event story, after he reveals the truth to Syozawa, he claims that he "would be satisfied to be killed by a hero" and even casually hands him a weapon.
  • Red Herring: The narration of the Face Destiny event makes it seem like he was the spy who stole the Change Chamber’s Hero Seed to use on Cess. It’s not until Minebuki’s debut that the spy is revealed to be a totally different person who has no relation to him.
  • Serious Business: Finding and creating a true hero of justice is this for him. Back in the Change Chamber, he refused to escape with Cess because he had yet to finish his research to recreate the Hero Seed, even though the situation at that point was dangerous for his own life.
  • Smart People Wear Glasses: Tokiya wears glasses to act the role of a scientist.
  • Trash of the Titans: Machine scraps and junks scatter all over his lab every time Syozawa visits him.
  • Workaholic: Spends all of his time in the lab to create training methods and enhancements for Lightwing’s heroic deeds.

    Darkmoon

Darkmoon/Lord Dark/Dark W. Moon

Played by: Natsuki Shinomiya

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/269e5eb0_6697_4e7d_830c_7e3d3e4bf8fd.jpeg

”I'm Lord Darkmoon, an evil organization executive.”

An executive of the evil organization Future Calamity and controller of their secret weapon, the Cutify Ray. Despite being Lightwing’s arch-nemesis, he is obsessed with all things cute and also has his own code of justice.

  • Affably Evil: Calling him "evil" would be quite a stretch, but when he calls for a temporary truce with Lightwing in order to stop "Mr.Ball" from harming the children, he is quite affable and civil, and even calls Lightwing cute. After subduing Ike, he thanks the heroes for their cooperation and apologizes for the trouble the organization’s internal clumsiness has caused, before politely announces their upcoming restructuring.
  • Anti-Villain: His goal to grant the weak power does sound quite noble in nature and he generally doesn’t mean harm - it’s just that he doesn't mind his creations going on a rampage. Alongside having a complex about being weak, implied to have lost his memory before stumbling down the path of villainy and being very affable towards the heroes, he’s meant to be the sympathetic villain one would not want to hate.
  • Badass Cape: Has an impressive one.
  • Benevolent Boss: He is very pleasant towards Oto and almost never imposes his superiority upon the latter even though he has all the rights and reasons to do so. Furthermore, he snaps back from his Villainous BSoD and sides with Lightwing for once after Oto got hurt because of Darkmoon’s creation.
  • Foil: To Alan, fellow Future Destroyer whose origin is related to a member of the heroes side. Darkmoon is a human-origin Anti-Villain, Benevolent Boss and Well-Intentioned Extremist with insecurity about his power, whose descent to villainy is not even his intention in the first place, and is implied to host the prototype of the Hero Seed Lightwing has. Alan is a malicious, destructive Blood Knight android who would abandon his loyal servant at the drop of hat just because, The Ace of Future Calamity and reasonably proud of his power, as well as being created using Cess as the model - which technically makes him a copy of Cess.
  • I Just Want to Be Badass: He has a complex about being a weakling, to the point he projects it onto objects he’s about to bestow power on.
  • Laser-Guided Amnesia: Lost his memory before he joined the Future Calamity, but gradually recalls them in his event.
  • "Not So Different" Remark: He thinks he and Lightwing may have more in common than they previously believed, as they’re both able to exist thanks to another influence. Lightwing isn’t very happy about it.
    • Even more so due to the implication that Darkmoon survived the accident that almost took his life because someone put a Hero Seed inside him, just like Lightwing.
  • Villainous BSoD: As he realizes he fails to understand the ball's wishes and almost harms passerby children in process, he breaks down and freezes up on the spot even when the giant ball is heading towards him until Lightwing snaps him out of it.
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: His entire goal is to bestow power upon the cute and precious, which stem from a desire to preserve them from the pain of the world.
  • Wouldn't Hurt a Child: He has no qualms letting the enlarged, given-a-sentience toys wrecking around as long as he thinks they’re enjoying it, but when a giant soccer ball he gave life to charges towards the children nearby, he panics and later is willing to side with Lightwing to stop its rampage.

    Oto the Warrior

Oto the Warrior/Otomine

Played by: Otoya Ittoki

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/346211a8_83ec_481e_8f0c_02d7b6866d77.jpeg

"I won't let any so-called hero stand in Lord Dark's way! Prepare yourself!"

Darkmoon’s henchman.

  • Affably Evil: Similar to his lord Darkmoon, he’s willing to aid in the destruction of the world, but doesn’t seem to be that bad of a person.
  • I Owe You My Life: Darkmoon saved him once and gave him somewhere to belong, for which he is eternally grateful for.
  • Taking the Bullet: He pushed Darkmoon out of the way of a sentient giant soccer ball and got himself injured. Luckily, Professor Toki is quick to provide emergency medical aid.
  • Too Many Belts: Two on hips, two on one arm, two on one thigh. That’s supervillain fashion right there.
  • Undying Loyalty: To Darkmoon. He will even insult other Future Destroyers if it’s to protect his lord’s honor.

    Cess

Played by: Cecil Aijima

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/03f6bb15_539e_4d94_b0a6_3907c0735c9f.jpeg

”My name is Cess. I was created at Change Chamber, and I am a top secret android specialized in combat.”

The seventh android born of the "Android Project" by the Change Chamber, and also the experimental subject who brought about its end. He’s currently staying at Rentokuji’s mansion as a servant.

  • Benevolent A.I.: Thanks to Toki, he developed compassion, heroism, and love for peace and human.
  • Born as an Adult: He has the body of an adult, but a childlike mind.
  • Child Prodigy: Well, for a certain degree of "child". Even though he’s newly created, he’s capable of understanding complex texts and scribbling plausible molecular geometry.
  • Escaped from the Lab: He ran away from the lab of the Change Chamber thanks to Toki’s assistance. As the professor put it, he was "an experimental subject escaping from a corrupt facility for the sake of justice".
  • Fanboy: He declares himself upon his first meeting with Syozawa as "a Lightwing fan", much to the hero’s shock.
  • Lucky Seven: He’s the seventh test subject who manages to escape the Change Chamber to live a life of his own.
  • Robot Boy: He has headphone cups for ears and wears an outfit that blends with and hides most of his robotic features.

    Alan

Played by: Ranmaru Kurosaki

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/468f9142_1781_40e0_95e9_05e3609bf46d.jpeg

”You wanna be my underling? Save it for the next world. All I wanna hear is you scream as you beg for your life.”

A demonic android created by Future Calamity.

  • The Ace: Alan's strength is noted to be outstanding even among the supervillains, and because of that he is regarded as the Supreme Commander's right-hand man.
  • A.I. Is a Crapshoot: An evil homunculus whose sole purpose in life is to destroy and make people suffer.
  • Artificial Human: On the same board as Cess, he’s a homunculus who was created specifically to fight.
  • Blood Knight: He simply follows his impulses to destroy whatever he desired, goal or even method to be damned.
  • Evil Laugh: Occasionally bursts into this.
  • Foil: To Darkmoon, fellow Future Destroyer whose origin is related to a member of the heroes side.
  • It Amused Me: He does everything on his whims without regard for consequences just because he finds it fun, and warns Toma that he will not hesitate to abandon the latter when he finds him interesting no longer.
"As long as I'm having fun, I'll play along."
  • Red Baron: According to Darkmoon, he has been called the "Devil's Child".
  • Ridiculously Human Robot: Unlike Cess, who has visible mechanical parts on him, Alan looks mostly human.
  • Super-Strength:
  • The Only One Allowed To Kill You: He helps everyone take down Ike because as he claims, he will be the only one to destroy the world.
  • White Hair, Black Heart: He’s played by the white-haired Ranmaru, and unlike the blond Darkmoon, he’s an irredeemable berserker.

    Toma the Follower

Toma the Follower/Professor Toma

Played by: Masato Hijirikawa

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/3e4874e6_5f86_4c25_8de5_5353e4d4d352.jpeg

”I am Lord Alan’s faithful servant. Once there is nothing left to destroy, I will gladly offer myself to him.”

A man drawn to Alan's determination and has become quite a fanatic towards him.

  • Berserk Button: Insulting Alan in front of him equals to having a death wish. He almost kills Toki the moment the latter calls Alan "defective" and would gladly do so were Darkmoon to not arrive in time, and doesn’t hesitate to consider consigning a fellow henchman of a Future Destroyer to oblivion when Oto actively insults Alan.
  • Like a God to Me: He worships Alan to a ridiculous degree.
  • My Master, Right or Wrong: To him, whatever Alan wants is the absolute right one. Mass murder of innocent civilians and chain destruction included.
  • Slasher Smile: Has quite a decent one in the Special Shot of Masato’s "Evil Villains" card.
  • Undying Loyalty: He is so loyal that he’s willing to cooperate with the Hero Lab to save Alan from Ike.

    Minebuki

Played by: Reiji Kotobuki

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/9cf3f544_65b2_4b60_be8b_8b9018454974.jpeg

”I won't falter anymore. I want to bid farewell to my past and walk the path of no regrets, to be my own hero.”

A former government bureaucrat who was the director of the Android Project. He seeks out Professor Toki in an attempt to atone for his past misdeeds.

  • The Atoner: He deeply regrets having been involved in the Change Chamber’s Android Project and the birth of more than one Future Destroyer, to the point he once wanted to die for it.
  • Broken Tears: He’s shown crying in the ruin of a city in Episode 2 of "Haze of Justice" side story, due to the painful realization that the Change Chamber’s research only brought upon endless pain and destruction.
  • Death Seeker: According to Rentokuji, him repeatedly self-blaming for everything is a show of his desire to "be judged for straying from the path of humanity", as in wanting to pull a Death Equals Redemption. Minebuki doesn’t deny it, and also admits later on that he can see how selfish he is by asking another to release him from his own torment.
  • Earn Your Happy Ending: At the end of his event, he slowly learns to let go of his suicidal guilt and gets a chance to atone by helping Toki at the Hero Lab.
  • Guilt Complex: He constantly puts the blame of the Future Destroyers’ existence and the heroes’ suffering on himself even when no one remotely mentions it.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: He stayed behind to shield a kid from a falling tower, which could have ended lethally for him if Lightwing hadn’t arrived in time.
  • Heroic Self-Deprecation: Because of the immense guilt from the Hero Seed incident, he doesn’t have the best opinion of himself.
"You think I sound cool? I wish I were as worthy as you of such words, Lightwing."
  • I Just Want to Be Special: He has always wanted to be a hero, so even though he knew how inhumane the experiments of the Android Project were, he was so obsessed with the results that he paid it no mind.
  • Stoic Spectacles: Reiji noticeably wears glasses to portray Minebuki, a solemn former bureaucrat.
  • My Greatest Failure: The Hero Seed he ordered his underling to steal eventually found its way into a Future Destroyer (heavily implied to be Darkmoon).
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: He believed the lab's technology gave power to humans who lacked it so that they may stand against evil and created a peaceful world where innocents are safe.

    Rentokuji

Played by: Ren Jinguji

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/f20f3838_c051_4665_8f2b_b9bc2d2e48b7.jpeg

”Have you ever seen a real hero? Their lives are the peak of entertainment. Haha, the more dramatic, the better.”

The Hero Lab’s eccentric benefactor, and also Cess’ caretaker.

  • Above Good and Evil: He pays no craps to both the heroes’ and villains’ ideals, and will help both sides for the sake of a spectacular showdown.
  • Ambiguously Evil: He treats heroes and the fact that they’re risking their life on a daily basis as nothing less than entertainment. However, he’s still The Team Benefactor and so far hasn’t done anything inconvenient to the heroes.
  • Gentleman Snarker: His snarks regarding Minebuki’s past misdeeds are brutal, but he says all of it with politeness and a smile on his face.
Rentokuji: "The artificial demon, Alan. What tremendous power. Unhesitating destruction, only capable of pure evil. Is that another of your achievements?"
Minebuki: "That's an unsavory way to put it. Why did you even bring me here?"
  • It Amused Me: He invested in Toki’s lab because he wanted heroes to be more active, and by that he gets to see their "exciting developments". He even claims he will be ready to sacrifice anything if he’s able to set Cess up like a beacon on a hill in this "story".
"Now, entertain me with more exciting developments. And don't you dare bore me, even for a moment."
  • Mysterious Backer:
  • The Team Benefactor: He provides Professor Toki funds to sustain himself and further his research which allow Lightwing to have more advanced training and equipments.

    Camiya

Played by: Camus

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/f86fa0ca_846a_43ef_96f7_0ba2c8788d94.jpeg

”I am Camiya, Chief Engineer of the Future Destroyers. My only goal is to strengthen humanity, no matter what it brings.”

Chief engineer and one of the leaders of the Future Destroyers.

  • Ambiguously Evil: He’s no good person, per se, but for a Future Destroyer he doesn’t seem very interested in the organization’s goal and is willing to talk with Lightwing - their Arch-Enemy - on cordial terms.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: His family has special abilities, and so the government set its sights on them, forcing them to participate in superhuman experiments until they died.
  • Delicate and Sickly: He appears to be struggling with poor health.
  • For Science!: He’s willing to reduce a whole city to ashes for scientific means. In Chapter 3 of the Chaos Wilder side story, he claims that he only agreed to conduct maintenance on Darkmoon and Alan in order to further his research.
  • High-Class Glass: Which signifies his high ranking in the organization.
  • Non-Action Guy: He’s dubbed as the first noncombatant Lightwing encounters. Seeing how sickly he is, it’s reasonable.
  • Not Afraid to Die: When confronted by Ike, he allows the android to decide his fate instead of running away, stating that he is "not long for this world". Either Ike spared him or Rentokuji saved him in time.
  • Pet the Dog: He helped Toma escape from Ike, allowing the latter to rescue Oto and seek assistance from the Hero Lab.
  • Revenge: He wants to get revenge on the government for killing his family while treating them like lab rats.
  • Secretly Dying:

    Ike

Played by: Mikaze Ai

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/e8c04a02_e35d_4d2a_840c_4b0ce4d7bbfc.jpeg

”You wish for me to destroy you? What a peculiar human. I will fulfill your request if you listen to my own.”

The "perfect" homunculus created by Future Destroyers.

  • All Your Powers Combined: His body is the product of many data combined, Alan’s and Darkmoon’s included.
  • Character Development: Through his encounter with Lightwing, he starts to develop free will and have a desire on his own instead of being the emotionless machine who was only capable of following orders. Surprisingly however, he does not have a Heel–Face Turn.
  • Evil Cannot Comprehend Good: He gets confused when he learns that Lightwing’s goal is to save people and not dominate them.
  • Literal-Minded: He is told to
  • Turned Against Their Masters: He killed the Supreme Commander upon awakening, kept the Future Destroyers trapped as power battery, and then proceeded to wreck a giant havoc in the entire organization to the point even Toma has to humbly ask for the heroes’ help.

    Rey

Played by: Reiji Kotobuki

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/d451fa46_77d1_4f19_94ba_fe7069ad53d3.jpeg

  • Affectionate Nickname: He calls the protagonist "Madonna".
  • I Want My Beloved to Be Happy: He gives up on his feelings for the protagonist and lets her and Renn get together. In Chapter 2 or Reiji’s "Until the Rain Stops" side story, while audibly struggling to hide his emotions as he realizes who the protagonist’s crush is, he still encourages her to make a move on Renn so that her love wouldn’t end up unrequited like his.
  • Matchmaker Crush: He has a crush on the protagonist, the same person he actively pushes to his friend Renn.
  • Only Friend: With Renn.
  • Stepford Smiler: Hides his unrequited emotions behind a cheerful smile so that his crush and his friend can get together.

Mystic-in-Training Otoharu’s Struggle Events included

    Otoharu

Played by: Otoya Ittoki

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/b535cb6e_c250_4f5e_bb68_f08f45ea78b4.jpeg

”If you find yourself in trouble of the otherworldly variety, you know who to call!”

  • Determinator: He spends every single day arriving at Shiraai’s place just to talk with him and convince him to move out of the spirit village.
  • Disappeared Dad: His father died when he was a child for unknown reason, so he inherited the shrine.
  • Dreaming of Things to Come: He dreamed about Shiraai before they even meet face-to-face, and unwittingly saw the truth behind the latter’s situation - caged inside his immortality and duty; though Otoharu doesn’t seem to realize it.
  • Family Business: His family has been mystic and guarding the shrine for ages since Shonoshin’s time.
  • Friendless Background: He never had much contact with people even when his father was alive because he can see things others can’t, which freaked other kids out.
  • Magical Incantation: "Seiryuu, Byakko, Suzaku, Genbu, Kochin, Teitai, Bun'o, Santai, Gyokunyo...!"
  • Prone to Tears: Not now, but other characters frequently describe him as a crybaby in his childhood, much to his embarrassment.
  • Red Is Heroic: He wears a red kimono.
  • Nice Guy: He’s incredibly kind and pleasant, even towards the spirits he’s supposed to exorcise. This allows him to be seen as an equal even by the most powerful of supernatural entities.
  • Supreme Chef: The inarizushi he makes can even impress Tenko.
  • Wake Up, Go to School & Save the World: He has quite a busy schedule, going to school at day and managing mystic works at night.

    Shonoshin

”I, the great Shonoshin, am Otoharu's strongest partner and the one on whom the future depends. Stand in awe of me!”

A fox spirit, tamed and sealed away by Otoharu's ancestors, and has assisted his family for generations.

  • The Baby of the Bunch: He’s the youngest of all the spirits appearing in the series. As a result, his childhood endeavors become a frequent topic of conversation for the chattier ones of them, much to his embarrassment.
  • Familiar: Of Otoharu, having been bound to his bloodline since the older time.
  • Kitsune: He is a fox spirit with the ears and only a tail because he’s still young (by kitsune’s standard anyway).
  • Older Than They Look: He looks young and small, but his age dates back to Otoharu’s ancestors.
  • The Prankster: Tenko mentioned that he was a prankster when he was younger.
  • Super Mode: His true form is treated this way. He can teleport around and break Shiraai’s barriers, but it has a time limit.
  • Took a Level in Badass: After the training arc, he can access to his true form and be capable of more convenient powers.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Inarizushi.
  • Training from Hell: In the Sparkling Blue Eyes event, he undergoes it with Ran acting like a Drill Sergeant Nasty and Nekomata - who gets a little overexcited - joining in.
Shonoshin: "It was like a hell full of boulders and needles. Just thinking about it makes me sweat."

    Tokiharu

Played by: Tokiya Ichinose

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/f2664e81_b856_4a0e_9a4f_1d818c2c519e.jpeg

”Otoharu and Tenko have taught me much, from how to store my power to basic mystic techniques. They have been invaluable.”

Otoharu’s schoolmate and also client, who asks the mystic to get rid of his ability to see spirits. He’s accompanied by Tenko.

  • Apocalypse Maiden: Being a demon/human hybrid means Tokiharu's power would eventually run wild, take over his consciousness, and swallow up anything supernatural lurking nearby. This could have led to the birth of a great and uncontrollable demon who can put the world into serious jeopardy - though thanks to everyone’s effort he has learned how to keep his power in check.
  • Child of Two Worlds: Tokiharu was born to a mystic father and a demon mother. This unique lineage is the source of his overwhelming power.
  • Hybrid All Along: He appears fully human at first, but then turns out to be half-human, half-demon.
  • Parental Abandonment: His parents vanished because of allegedly a spirit, and he has lived alone since then. Turned out they gave up their life to seal his power.
  • Power Incontinence: He keeps seeing spirits even though he dislikes them.
  • Psychic Powers: He can see spirits.

    Tenko

Played by: Natsuki Shinomiya

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/0fa32a82_d7e1_4a74_a799_d6273c4858f1.jpeg

”Otoharu and Tokiharu are so hard-working despite all their troubles. Seeing that makes me want to help them out.”

An ancient fox spirit and a long-time friend of Shonoshin, he tracked down Otoharu’s shrine because he wanted to visit the other fox spirit. After he sees Tokiharu’s situation, he volunteers to accompany him.

  • Barrier Warrior: He can create powerful barriers that prevent unwanted visits from other supernatural entities.
  • Big Good: Being the most powerful note  and (probably) oldest spirit ally of Otoharu, as well as a benevolent Bunny-Ears Lawyer makes him this for our main characters.
  • Bunny-Ears Lawyer: He still has Natsuki’s Cloudcuckoolander tendency, though this time paired with presumably hundreds of years in age and a high rank among the fox spirits with power to match.
Shonoshin: "Most high-ranking fox spirits tend to be a little weird."
  • Fish out of Water: Due to being an ancient spirit, Tenko is pretty clueless about the human world, doesn’t know what "school" is about and literally thought Tokiharu changed his name to "cleanup" when the latter mentioned having to do cleanup at school.
  • It Was a Gift: His glasses, which a good friend gave him long ago.
  • Kitsune: He’s a fox spirit like Shonoshin, with more fluffy tails as he’s much older and more powerful.
  • Magical Incantation: Which doubles as a Badass Boast.
Tenko: "Spirits, leave this place at once. This is now my territory. Those who trespass shall invoke the wrath of heaven."
  • Secret Secret-Keeper: He realizes that Tokiharu is a half-demon to a degree, but chooses to not mention it to anyone before Ran’s arrival.

    Kotobuki

Played by: Reiji Kotobuki

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/0f3157a3_e1db_4df3_8629_a12bd5b899e6.jpeg

”It might be about time for me to visit the living world again… At my age, you know when something’s about to go down. I want in!”

An aloof and slippery tanuki who visit the human world once in a while, and has taken an interest in Otoharu’s journey.

  • The Gadfly: He seems amused when telling Otoharu and Shonoshin their embarrassing childhood secrets in order to prove his age.
  • Innocent Bystander: Claims that he will be this, though in his own special way.
  • It Amused Me: He follows Otoharu and Shonoshin because he figures something interesting's bound to happen around those two.
  • Really 700 Years Old: He constantly mentions how he has been around for a long time and calls himself an elder, though his appearance is as youthful as anyone else.

    Ran

Played by: Ranmaru Kurosaki

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/2451669c_916b_4eae_bad7_a9678e448651.jpeg

”No human’s gonna push me around, but I swear on my Kijin pride that I’ll keep any promise I make.”

A Kijin often seen following Tokiharu from a distance and got accused of being the reason his parents disappeared. Turns out the man is just looking after him because of a promise...

  • Absolute Cleavage: The way he wears his kimono shows almost the entirety of his chest.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: A demonnote  whose first few appearances make him seem quite shady, but he’s just looking after his friends’ child after their death.
  • Horned Humanoid: Befitting a demon.
  • Honorary Uncle: He’s a friend of Tokiharu’s parents, and comes to develop a close, parental-like relationship with the boy after they meet and bond.
  • Parental Substitute: He’s requested by Tokiharu’s parents to look after the boy before they committed their Heroic Sacrifice.

    Nekomata

Played by: Cecil Aijima

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/0972d66d_049a_4604_87dd_c20f256b8e73.jpeg

”Those who would harm my master may not pass. Answer my question, human. Are you friend or foe?”

A two-tailed cat yokai Otoharu finds in his weakened state.

  • Cats Are Magic:
  • Morality Pet: Hebigami considers him a friend and cares for his safety.
  • Mythology Gag: Cecil playing the role of a black cat spirit who gets stuck in his cat form is a clear reference to his situation in the original visual novel.
  • Sleepyhead: Due to his lack of power, he’s usually in a dazed state and will fall asleep anytime.

    Hebigami

Played by: Camus

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ffc40843_5b5c_4ac1_90de_ff14d299bcd4.jpeg

”That cat trusts humans too much, even after what they did to us, but I cannot. I will be subordinate to them no longer.”

An old friend of Nekomata.

  • Fantastic Racism: He looks down on human at best and believes Humans Are Bastards at worst.
  • Freudian Excuse: It’s kinda hard to blame his antagonistic stance towards our main characters when you know that he and his friend Nekomata were basically enslaved by human.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Hostile towards human but for a good reason, and genuinely cares about Nekomata.
  • Snakes Are Sinister: He’s a snake youkai and the first main spirit to be antagonistic towards Otoharu (whereas those before him are either ally or neutral), which turns him into a villain in the Mystic-in-Training: Hazy Memories event.

    Masamichi

Played by: Masato Hijirikawa

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/f862ff94_0431_4987_8d89_e8a93c9316dd.jpeg

”I wish to wield my powers for those in need. I know it won't atone for what I've done, but I wish to give back somehow.”

A full-fledged mystic who pays a visit to see whether Otoharu will be willing cooperate with his powerful mystic family.

  • The Atoner: He tries to return Nekomata and Hebigami’s treasures to them, which will release their souls from human’s control even though that means his family will lose the power of two spirits because he wants to atone for his ancestors' crimes.
  • Big Brother Mentor: He becomes Otoharu and Tokiharu’s mentor in the art of mystic.
  • The Dutiful Son: As the eldest, he concerned himself only with his responsibilities as the heir and turned his gaze away from his ancestors' crimes.

    Shiraai

Played by: Ai Mikaze

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/82b1beb7_dba4_4f40_83e6_a252993e5196.jpeg

”I am neither divine incarnate nor a monster who harms humans. I only wish to interact with others as myself. Nothing more.”

The strange sorcerer who has moved into the village of spirits. Is stubborn and uncompromising towards everyone.

  • The Ageless: As a vessel for gods, he acquired immortality and agelessness.
  • Barrier Warrior: He surrounded himself and the village of spirits with a powerful barrier of magic that requires both Otoharu to weaken and Shonoshin’s Super Mode to break.
  • Caged Bird Metaphor
  • Mouth of Sauron: He was a yorimashi, those chosen to receive revelations directly from gods.
  • Sour Outside, Sad Inside: He is stubborn, jaded and quite rude to others, but that seems to be a result of a life caged in duties and burdened by immortality.
  • Took a Level in Kindness: It takes Otoharu visiting him and talking to him everyday, but he noticeably mellows out over time and agrees to stay in Otoharu’s shrine after the latter forcibly brought him there out of emergency.
  • Was Once a Man: He was born a human before becoming a yorimashi, losing his mortality as he gained power, and worshiped by the villagers like an incarnation of a god. Now he is something straddling the line between mortals and divine.
  • Who Wants to Live Forever?: The strain of immortality, along with being both feared and detested, caused him to grow jaded and uncaring towards everything. He seems to only quit this mindset a little after bonding with Otoharu, as he claims he wants to be around to see Otoharu’s growth.

    Ren

Played by: Ren Jinguji

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/b4acdf48_5fa5_4afe_b206_d47a0c1bef48.jpeg

”Shonoshin completely fell for my prank. I beat him even when it comes to mischief. Though I have been at it far longer.”

A yatagarasu and friend of Tenko. He seeks out Otoharu in order to ask for help regarding his spirit village, which recently has an unwanted resident.

  • Always Someone Better: He claims that he beats Shonoshin when it comes to mischief.
  • Clever Crows: He’s a crow spirit who is also observant and wise.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: He’s a crow spirit dressed in all black, but he comes to Otoharu as a client and is an ally all the time.
  • Trickster Mentor: He volunteers to take Shonoshin under his wings...only to make Ran train the young fox in his stead.

Shining Academy Events included

    Ren Jinnomikado

Played by: Ren Jinguji

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/b96b5412_79cf_427a_84bc_ad11ec93795e.jpeg

”I’m Ren. But on the streets, they call me Lone Wolf.”

A cool and quiet delinquent known as the "Lone Wolf", who is raising objections about Shining Academy's domineering student council president.

  • Actually, I Am Him: In Turbulent Symphony, when Otoya declares that he will only accept a fight if his opponent is "Lone Wolf", Ren has this to say:
Ren: "And if you found that you were speaking with Lone Wolf, would you start a fight in broad daylight, Noble Institute student council member Otoya Ichinomiya?"
  • Anti-Hero: He does wish for the good of others, but he values his personal ideal too much to actively act on it.
  • The Dreaded: He is incredibly feared, with a mere mention of his name is enough to allow plenty of the academy’s students to get away with tons of troubles they’ve created.
  • Genius Bruiser: Ren may seem like your typical slacking delinquent, but alongside his muscle powers he’s also among the school’s top 100.
  • Heroic Neutral: He is a loner who strives to keep a distance from others and usually refrains from getting involved with people personally.
  • Japanese Delinquents: He slacks off in school, customizes his uniform by rolling his sleeves up and wears t-shirt underneath the gakuran, has chains as accessories, and also carries around a pair of sunglasses.
  • Loners Are Freaks: As a delinquent, he has a fearsome reputation in and out of the school, and his solitary tendency doesn’t help that much.
  • Misunderstood Loner with a Heart of Gold: Prefers to live for himself and claims that he’s not one to help others, but is nice to woman (unless they want to exploit him, that is), appreciates Syo like a friend, and genuinely wants Masato to become a true leader.
  • Real Men Take It Black: Ren is a mature, confident and tough delinquent. Of course he’s gonna have an espresso at the Green Summit cafe.
  • Red Baron: Lone Wolf.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Habanero sandwich.

    Syo Kurunomiya

Played by: Syo Kurusu

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/638b43c2_c6ec_4e48_9f50_aa5cc4c99a87.jpeg

”I run with Lone Wolf Ren, and I’m proud of it. So don’t go around calling me Milky Bunny or anything, got it?!”

Ren’s fellow delinquent who looks up to him. Has an Odd Friendship with the head of disciplinary committee.

  • Book Dumb: He doesn’t seem to do well academically, as Ai said Syo came to him crying about his poor marks last time.
  • Childhood Friends: With Tokiya, and they still maintain their good relationship despite the fact that they’re of rivaling schools.
  • Embarrassing Nickname: Even when being chased by Seinomiya while trying to deliver the habanero sandwich Ren ordered to the man, he has to spend some of his stamina to clarify that, no, he is not "Milky Bunny"!
  • Hot-Blooded: He gets heated up when he sees Ranmaru being bandaged, asking the latter for the info of the attacker so that he can go beat them to a pulp.
  • Japanese Delinquents: As Ren’s follower, he also dresses the part with improperly-worn uniform and plenty of accessories - chains included.
  • Odd Friendship: Somehow, a delinquent like him is able to strike up a friendship with the head of disciplinary committee. Theirs is a heartwarming one, too, with despite how much he tries to run away from Natsuki every time they meet, Syo actually helps cheer Natsuki up when the latter thinks he’s not doing a good job as Masato’ assistant and invites him to grab some stuffs in the cafeteria.
  • Only Friend: To Ren, before the latter and Masato finally strike up a friendship.
  • Red Baron: Big Jaguar.

    Masato Seinomikado

Played by: Masato Hijirikawa

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/75afcc9d_6769_4f69_a5cc_ea02ed96dee6.jpeg

”Phew... No matter how many times we do this, it's always difficult to put my thoughts into words properly.”

President of the student council at Shining Academy, Masato is an authoritative soloist with...not the best reputation among his fellow students.

  • The Dreaded: He is equally feared by the students as Ren, but more because of his authority in the school.
  • Heel Realization: After a series of event, he finally realizes his methods are wrong.
  • Innocently Insensitive: He doesn’t realize that the student body dislikes how he grants the student council so many privileges, thinking that it’s obviously deserving because everyone in the council has been working hard.
  • Poor Communication Kills: Masato is always at odds with everyone because he looks down on them, causing him to come off as an oppressive tyrant instead of the well-meaning leader of people he tries to become, hence his rocky tenure. He also has difficulty putting his thoughts into words properly.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: Grows into this at the end of his event. He even allows Ai to leave the Student Council to pursue his passion.
  • Red Armband of Leadership: Wears one as the Student Council President.
  • Took a Level in Kindness: He starts to care more about the students.
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: He means well for the Shining Academy and is just doing his duty as the Student Council President by trying to create an environment that encourages studying and stop delinquency, but his methods are quite - for the lack of better words - tyranny. This is acknowledged by his actor, and of course, he gets better.
Masato Hijirikawa — The Confused Soloist: ”The President was heavy-handed, but he was trying to do the right thing. Maybe Ren gave him the chance to grow up a bit.”
  • Workaholic: He has always been presented as studious and hardworking, but after the event in The Bewildered Soloist he pushes himself even harder to make the school a better place. In Episode 3 of the Student Council President card’s side story, he recounts all of the works he’s having - meetings, responding to student-submitted letters, disciplinary problems, dealing with all the applications for setting up stalls at the school festival - before falling asleep on the spot out of exhaustion.

    Natsuki Seinomiya

Played by: Natsuki Shinomiya

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/481c9875_0855_4c29_b893_692495569779.jpeg

”Seinomiya here, head of disciplinary committee!”

Head of the disciplinary committee at Shining Academy. Unlike Masato, he’s friendly and a softie.

  • Beware the Nice Ones: Seems almost too soft to be in the disciplinary committee, but there’s a reason he’s its head. He carries a training sword with him when checking the students’ attire and attitude in front of the school for crying out loud!
  • Cuteness Proximity: He squeals at the animal latte arts when going on patrol with Masato in a cafe. The real Natsuki claims that his character will overlook someone snuggling sweets - especially cute-looking ones like the Piyo-chan macarons - into the academy because he himself likes cute things too.
  • Odd Friendship: Friendship between a delinquent and the head of disciplinary committee is unlikely, but it happens in his and Syo’s case. When he chases after Syo in Episode 2 of the latter’s side story, he just wants to share the milk pudding.
  • Only Friend: Thanks to his Nice Guy tendency, he’s the only one who could tolerate Masato pre-Character Development.
  • Nice Guy: He’s very friendly towards the students, even those who break the rules. When asked to be stricter by Masato, he just brushes it off saying that’s more Masato’s department than his.

    Ai Kazenomikado

Played by: Ai Mikaze

”I am sure we can do anything we set our minds to, but let us not forget what is most important: having fun.”

A first-year at the Shining Academy and the secretary of the student council. He’s brilliant but lonely and troubled, as beneath the diligence exists a restrained desire.

Played by: Reiji Kotobuki

”I recommend trying our original roasted coffee blend. Some people come here just to hear my musings on coffee, you know!”

An alumni of the Shining Academy, known as the "legendary bad boy", now runs a back-street café called Green Summit together with his old friend Ranmaru.

  • Former Teen Rebel: He was the "legendary bad boy", a former gang leader with complete control over the area. Now he is just a cheery young adult managing his little backstreet cafe.
  • Heterosexual Life-Partner: With Ranmaru. After graduation, they still stay with each other through the Green Summit café, are capable of fighting together just like the old days, and Ranmaru can read Reiji’s expression even when facing the opposite direction.
  • Let's Get Dangerous!: When the gang member they’re facing declared that they could start their takeover of the town by crushing him and Ranmaru, Reiji drops all of his former reluctance, starts smiling and winks playfully while asking Ranmaru what to do, before claiming he would "prefer to solve this peacefully". Ranmaru points out that his expression means the barista wouldn’t want anything less than throwing some hands into the face of those overconfident fools.
  • Noodle Incident: What exactly caused him to give up on his power over Shining Academy and the area around it years ago? He didn’t seem to be in the best mental state at the time back then, so it can hardly be sheer boredom. Is it guilt, exhaustion, or depression even?
  • Overly Long Name: While many in this series qualify, Kotobukinomikado has eight freaking syllables.
  • Retired Badass: In the past, as the former head of the Black Orchid gang, he united all the gangs in the area and controlled Shining Academy from the shadows before mysteriously giving up on his own achievements. He still keeps his ability to fight however, and kicks the asses of those who tried to harm Ranmaru alongside the man himself quite efficiently.
  • Stepford Smiler: It may seem like he lives without a care in the world, but he actually carries many burdens.

    Ranmaru Kuronomikado

”Even if you end up running away, you gotta make peace with the choices you make and hold your head up high.”

Leader of the Black Orchid gang and an alumni of the Shining Academy, he’s also running the Green Summit café together with Reiji.

  • Dark Is Not Evil: He is a gang leader who dresses in black, but is generally moral, reasonable, and a Friend to All Living Things.
  • A Father to His Men: When a former Black Orchid gang member called to Ranmaru crying that he was tricked and wouldn’t be allowed to leave the rival gang he joined unless Ranmaru goes to a warehouse outside town, despite totally aware that there will be ambushes, he still goes.
  • Friend to All Living Things: He has a pet dog, and drops all of his roughness in the presence of a stray cat.
  • Heterosexual Life-Partner: With Reiji. After graduation, they still stay with each other through the Green Summit café, are capable of fighting together just like the old days, and Ranmaru can read Reiji’s expression even when facing the opposite direction.
  • Kindhearted Cat Lover: When he finds a stray cat curled up in the alley, he gives it fish and acts very gentle towards it.

”You wish to transfer to Noble Institute? I’m flattered. As a member of the student council, allow me to welcome you.”

A model student of the Noble Institute. He cherishes his peaceful day-to-day life while supporting the Student Council President.

  • Badass Bookworm: Although he usually lets Otoya handle everything physical, if Chapter 3 of his "Student Council Member" side story is any indication, he can actually hold a fist fight on the same level as his combative cousin.
  • Beleaguered Assistant: He has his hands full from handling Otoya’s boisterousness and hotheadedness, as well as Cecil’s bouts of cloudcuckoolander moments.
  • Childhood Friends: With Syo, and they still maintain their good relationship even when they’re of the rivaling schools.
  • Clashing Cousins: He and Otoya are cousins - hence the same surname. While they’re the same age, their personality is the complete opposite of each other’s, hence they tend to compete and butt heads out of conflicting opinions. Otoya also steals Tokiya’s lunch frequently.
  • Foolish Sibling, Responsible Sibling: He’s the responsible one between him and Otoya, and as such always has to keep his cousin in check.
  • I Just Want to Be Normal: He loves normal daily life, but apparently his surroundings which consist of school rivalry and gang conflicts won't allow him that anytime soon.
  • Not So Stoic: Despite his prim and proper demeanor, he still has a mischievous side which is put on display when he expresses satisfaction after Syo steals the strawberry on Otoya’s parfait, citing it as the karma for having stolen Tokiya’s lunch for god knows how many times.
    • In Chapter 3 of his "Student Council Member", he’s shown in the CG to lick his lips excitedly at the thought of getting to use his fists.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: He’s the calm, responsible and logical Blue Oni to Otoya’s Red.

    Cecil Ainomikado

”My desire is to have both students of the Noble Institute and Shining Academy live in peace. My rule will ensure this.”

President of the student council at Noble Institute. Believing that Masato doesn’t do a good job as the council president of his respective school, he wishes to bring Shining Academy district under Noble Institute‘s control so that everyone can have a peaceful school life.

  • Cloudcuckoolander: For some reason, he decides to tell the Shining Academy’s student council that he’s going to take over their district when he is supposed to only do a surveillance, much to Tokiya’s exasperation.
    • In Tokiya’s "Student Council Member" side story, he insists on visiting a bakery in Shining Academy district after he just practically declared war to their student council the other day.
  • Locked Out of the Loop: Otoya and Tokiya keep him from knowing that they’re spreading rumors about Shining Academy to make people defect to Noble Institute, believing that since it remains to be seen if Noble Institute must take control of the Shining Academy district, Cecil doesn’t need to be burdened with currently unnecessary information. Subverted when it turns out Cecil knows all along.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: All of his actions stem from a desire to provide every student the peace and safety they deserve when they go to school. When he knows gang leaders cause disturbances within Noble Institute‘s school district and terrify students, unlike his predecessor who turned a blind eye to such things, he takes action to purge them.
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: He wants to bring the Shining Academy’s district into Noble Institute’s control because he believes it would prevent conflict from happening and everyone will get to enjoy a peaceful school life.

”Humans are creatures that both trust and distrust. They form bonds that are quickly broken the moment suspicion arises.”

A new teacher and freshly-appointed student council adviser in Shining Academy who tries to befriend Ai Kazenomikado. He’s actually a Noble Institute instructor working undercover.

  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: He goes around with the persona of a polite, friendly Enthusiastic Newbie Teacher, but is willing to manipulate a child just to further his goal.
  • Enthusiastic Newbie Teacher: Seems like this, though his enthusiasm in befriending and "helping" Ai makes him come off as very shady instead.
  • Evil Cannot Comprehend Good: He finds it "incomprehensible" that despite having infiltrated Shining Academy and deceived everyone, he’s still respected after being exposed.
  • Manipulative Bastard: He tries to manipulate Ai into losing hope in Masato and become a Puppet Student Council President under his thumb. When that fails, he switches to making gangs in the area fight each other to eliminate themselves.
  • The Mole: He infiltrated the Shining Academy at the order of Noble Institute in order to destroy it.
  • Nice Job Fixing It, Villain: It’s thanks to him suggesting Ai about Masato associating with delinquents in the Green Summit cafe that Ai can finally open up about his problems and leave the student council to pursue his music interest.
  • Villain with Good Publicity: Even after all the shenanigans in the Resolute March event, Ai still thinks of him as a good teacher who merely has a wrong impression of the Green Summit cafe.
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: The reason he agreed to become The Mole and committed morally questionable acts is because he wants to maintain a proper studying environment, and considers a few sacrifices are required for the sake of the students.

”You want to know my secret? Well then… if you beat me in a game of poker, I’ll let you in on it.”

Toki’s butler and in-all-but-name bodyguard, he used to be a wandering traveler with incredible charm and a mysterious past.

  • Badass in a Nice Suit: He’s always seen in his butler suit, and kicks asses in masses still wearing it.
  • Battle Butler: He’s literally built after this trope.
  • Born Lucky: When he gambles against the people that were responsible for the suspicious letter, he claims that he’s this. He doesn’t lie.
  • Death Dealer: Implied. In Episode 3 of Serment du Ciel Étoilé outfit story, Natsu threatens to cut a (supposedly) infiltrator’s head off with a playing card.
  • Hired Help as Family: He’s closer to Toki than any servant in the house, tends to his personal needs almost like a parental figure, and knows everything about Toki’s preferences, habits, and relationships.
  • I Owe You My Life: Toki saved him once, and he spent years traveling the world to make himself worthy to serve Toki as a repayment.
  • Mysterious Past: The only thing we knows is that he used to be a traveler, and had done lots of things in lots of places.
  • One-Man Army: He fights against ten bodyguards of the casino owner at once and wins without a scratch.
  • Wolf in Sheep's Clothing: On the surface, he seems to be as bubbly and Cloudcuckoolander as the real Natsuki, but in reality he’s a smart, observant man who will not hesitate to consider using Cold-Blooded Torture on those who threaten Toki’s safety. Episode 2 and 3 of the Serment du Ciel Étoilé outfit story embody this duality the best, with the former is Natsu doing his butler work in the bright daylight, and the latter is him interrogating an infiltrator in the dark hall.
  • Undying Loyalty: Towards Toki. He will stop at literally nothing to keep Toki safe.

”Natsu said he would be back late again. Well, there's nothing for it but to wait here in this garden under the stars.”

The young lord of a manor bequeathed to him by his parents.

  • Benevolent Boss: He’s against making Natsu his bodyguard because he doesn’t want him to get hurt in his place.
  • Bookworm: Literally called as such in the story. He was so engrossed in a book that he almost forgot the time to attend the Duke’s banquet.
  • Classy Cravat: Wears one in the Serment du Ciel Étoilé outfit, befitting his noble status.
  • Locked Out of the Loop: Natsu actively keeps Toki unaware of his darker side and the dirty works he has done for Toki’s sake.
  • The Night Owl: He usually stays up late star-gazing or sneakily reading books, which of course doesn’t pass over Natsu’s head.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: He is a good lord who puts the livelihoods of the populace above his own comfort, and dislikes the thought of someone getting hurt in his stead.
  • Workaholic:

    Prince Ai

Played by: Ai Mikaze

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/901705e1_dd6a_4ff3_9cf4_5121bf0292b1.jpeg

"This is Shelter 3. Please respond. It is nice to meet you. I am Ai. It is a very common name, but mine all the same."

The surviving prince of a severely polluted planet that was ravaged by a great interstellar war. Growing up with only a servant by his side, he hopes that by growing new plants they can somehow rejuvenate the devastated land and reunite with other survivors.

  • Caring Gardener: He is actively studying botany and experimenting with soils and seeds so that he can grow plants and revitalize long-lost flora in the outside world, as it is their only hope of purifying the lethally polluted air.
  • A Child Shall Lead Them: He’s the only surviving member of the royal family, which means when the planet is healed and the country is to be rebuilt, he will undeniably become its new ruler, though according to dialogues it seems he’s currently just a teenager.
  • Determinator: Even though countless sprouts have wilted, he never gives up on trying to grow plants on the planet.
  • Heroic BSoD: He comes very close to hitting a Despair Event Horizon when he realizes if he and Syo are the Sole Survivors, there will be no reason to rejuvenate the planet. Luckily Syo snaps him out of it.
  • King Incognito: Hides his identity as the prince to the people in the other shelter, who are Natsuki and Masato, and only introduces himself as a botanist/nobleman.
  • Royals Who Actually Do Something: He wants to revive his dead planet via planting flowers on it.
  • Royalty Superpower: As the prince, he can stay outside of the shelter up to near 30 minutes more than normal people, presumably due to genetically better body conditions.
  • Sugar-and-Ice Personality: According to Syo Kurusu, the prince seems indifferent at first, but he's actually always thinking about others and giving his all for them - which reminds him of the real Ai Mikaze.
  • The Wise Prince:

    Servant Syo

Played by: Syo Kurusu

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/21f92a80_9d04_4ae5_a194_1f488f02bce1.jpeg

"The prince has been maturing fast lately. I wonder how long I can hide the fact we're the only ones left on the planet."

The prince’s teacher and caretaker. He does his very best to preserve Prince Ai’s health and nurture him into a respectable ruler, even when there’s no country left to rule.

  • Actually, I Am Him: He is behind the existence of "Shelter 17" - what Prince Ai believed to be the other survivors on the planet.
  • Beleaguered Assistant: He has to constantly pay attention to Prince Ai so that the latter won't endanger himself staying outside for too long while losing himself in concentration, as well as managing things in the shelter, providing the prince care and education, and maintaining his charade as Shelter 17.
  • Did I Just Say That Out Loud?: Accidentally reveals the truth about Prince Ai’s time limit to Natsuki and Masato when they expressed concern that Ai had been outside for a while.
  • Emergency Impersonation: He considers claiming to be the prince when they have to meet the other survivors, since the war is not yet over.
  • Foil: To Lieutenant Colonel Natsuki. They're both the mentor figure to their shelter mate and looking after the other's growth, but Syo is Ai's servant while Natsuki is Masato's superior officer. Syo has the strictness rarely seen from a servant towards their master; Natsuki has the gentleness and friendliness that shouldn’t exist in the harsh military environment.
  • Heroic RRoD: In Episode 8 of the event story, he starts coughing and collapses after staying outside for nearing his time limit, which causes him to be bedridden several days after.
  • Older Than They Look: He claims that he has been looking after Prince Ai ever since the latter was still an infant, which would make him around his 30s at least after the ten odd years since the war as he should have been an adult to directly handle a royalty. Yet, he is shorter than the teenage prince due to being played by Syo Kurusu.
  • Parental Substitute: He raises and teaches Prince Ai after almost everyone, royalty included, was wiped out in the war.
  • Undying Loyalty: To Prince Ai.
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: He fakes being Shelter 17 sending in messages so that he can make the prince come back into the shelter and ensure his safety, as well as nurturing a little hope in the other's heart.

    Lieutenant Colonel Natsuki

Played by: Natsuki Shinomiya

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/1dd680bf_36c2_4eb9_b647_ba4c2c800257.jpeg

”Everything changed that day. Still, at least we're alive. When I think about those I failed to protect, I...”

The Lieutenant Colonel in a ruined world, Natsuki is currently staying in the shelter with his subordinate, hoping to find any survivor they can protect.

  • Benevolent Boss: He’s nothing but a pleasant and humble mentor to Masato.
  • Colonel Badass: He's the commanding officer of the National Defense Force's second battalion, and appears to be badass enough that Masato believes had Natsuki been able to join the frontline on that fateful day, their planet wouldn’t have ended in doom.
  • Foil: To Servant Syo.
  • The Mentor: During ten-odd years after the destruction of their planet, he personally trains Masato in combat.
  • My Greatest Failure: His lack of presence on the battlefield that led to the planet’s destruction still haunts the back of his mind.
  • Older Than They Look: He knew the prince ever since the latter was still a toddler. Ten years later, he doesn’t look any older than Prince Ai.

    Second Lieutenant Masato

Played by: Masato Hijirikawa

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/70f69323_f348_43c8_97e0_1590393cf43d.jpeg

”The lieutenant colonel is strong, but the burden he carries is unfathomable. I must train more if I wish to support him.”

Natsuki’s subordinate, the second lieutenant. In the fateful day, he was tasked with escorting an important figure and needed Natsuki’s assistance, something he feels he should blame himself for.

  • It's All My Fault: He constantly blames himself for his incompetence that prevented Natsuki from joining the frontline, which he believes could have turned the table of the war.

No More to Say Events included

    Don Camillo

Played by: Camus

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/acbae0a1_5d75_4b95_ae37_e617b2b81e18.jpeg

”My family is not fond of brutish measures. Our expansive influence is the result of civil negotiation.”

Head of the influential Camillo mafia family and also a vigilante leader. He is experienced and cold-blood, but nonetheless has his code of class and honor.

  • Badass in a Nice Suit: A mafia boss who dresses in a fine striped suit along with Badass Longcoat, Scarf of Asskicking and a nice fedora.
  • Cloudcuckoolander's Minder: When Shinon returns, Camillo has to keep an eye on him to prevent the former from going on a massacre, and then cleaning up the aftermath when Shinon did kill someone.
  • The Don: Well, he is straight up introduced as Don Camillo after all.
  • Legitimate Businessmens Social Club: He runs a bar as the front for his mafia family.
  • Pet the Dog: He doesn’t shy away from murder and torture, but is also a man of honor. Because one of his ancestors was indebted to a member of the Nero Family, he stays by and assists their Casino Brillare even though normally he would have nothing to do with such an "inconsequential" family. In fact, as much as he wants to deny it, he seems to develop some genuine affection for them.
    • He also had enough mercy to spare Ray, a vagabond implied to unknowingly violate his boundary, and even gave him a job.
  • The Unfettered: According to Camus, Don Camillo is a man of unwavering creed who will use any means necessary to accomplish his objective.
  • Vigilante Man: He’s vigilante leader who takes it upon himself to preserve public order.
  • We Do Not Know Each Other: He keeps insisting that he does not know Shinon and treats the other like a stranger for a good few episodes.
  • Wine Is Classy: He seems to have a thing for wine, seeing how he wants a vintage, thus costly, bottle in Nero’s bar in exchange for assistance.

    Ray

Played by: Reiji Kotobuki

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/c5c27bad_6c2d_4b82_9946_6594a9296c56.jpeg

”The name's Ray. I'm a made man, and I work as a mole for the mafia.”

Don Camillo’s subordinate, who by day poses as the owner of a bar and a street performer.

  • The Bartender
  • Drowning My Sorrows: While not to the point of drunk, he is shown to drink quite heavily in the main story and "Mobster in Disguise" side story, where he claims all of the dirty work is catching up with him.
  • I Owe You My Life: He was a naïve vagabond whose life was spared by Camillo and even given a job, which explains why he’s quite loyal to the don.
  • Number Two: Seems to be the closest to Camillo and accompanies him even when the latter is indulging in personal hobby.
  • Street Performer: He performs juggling and knife throwing on the street when not attending to mafia duties, and even collabs with Michael at one point.

    Marco Nero

Played by: Ranmaru Kurosaki

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/62b5c736_6fa9_46bb_b790_d006a7f9b9b6.jpeg

”If you’re expecting me to help you, there are conditions. Beat me in a bet.”

The head of the Nero crime family, he runs the Brillare casino which he inherited after his father died. Marco's quiet, moderate disposition could be seen as a good thing, but it does not serve him well as the boss of a mafia family. Though he wants to do something about his family's low status and lack of power, the reality is that there is nothing much he can do to change this state of affairs.

    Micheal

Played by: Ai Mikaze

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/1c2a1f55_da0a_4fae_99ab_4acf80f0820b.jpeg

” Marco doesn't hold back from winning against customers, so I help lighten the mood with my singing.”

Marco’s younger brother, a talented singer but unfortunately is restricted to the tiny stage inside the Brillare casino.

  • The Gambler: He does play in the casino with customers.
  • Street Musician: When not singing in the casino, he sings on the street next to Ray’s street performance.

    Jìyè Dōng

Jìyè Dōng/Tokiya

Played by: Tokiya Ichinose

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/8c016b7c_70e1_4c42_a1f1_d5096708b921.jpeg

”It is our job to satisfy the daily influx of new desires. Clients are our lifeblood. Thank you for your support.”

An elusive, free-spirited arms dealer who goes by the name Tokiya, before the reveal that his true name is Jìyè Dōng. He has connections to Red Tiger Society, a powerful group from a far off country, and together with his companion Otoya he comes offering a deal to the Camillo family.

  • Arms Dealer
  • The Baby of the Bunch: Though none of their age are specified, he’s apparently the youngest of the cast and frequently treated as a problem child by Camillo. His childish behaviors do not help his case.
  • Berserk Button: He doesn’t like being looked down because of his young age, and is visibly annoyed when he thinks Makoto does so.
  • Cool People Rebel Against Authority: Implied. He doesn’t appear to have much respect for the "nagging elders" back home who seems to be his higher-ups in the Red Tiger Society, to the point of traveling from place to place in hope of escaping their eyes, calling a place without them "paradise", and scolding Dùyè Wáng for mentioning them in a "momentous night".
  • Disproportionate Retribution: In Chapter 2 of Tokiya’s "Red Tiger Society" side story, he kills a man merely for being a Jerkass after bumping into him. Justified since he is in need of more notoriety so that Camillo would think of him higher, and being unfairly brutal is a quick shortcut.
  • Gratuitous Foreign Language:
  • Guyliner: If one looks at him a little closer, they will notice that he wears red eyeliner.
  • Sweet Tooth: He loves his peach steamed buns, and in No More Order he was late to Michael and Ray’s performance because he wanted to buy roasted chestnuts. He also responded to Shinon’s friendship offer that they would make good friends especially if the latter enjoys sweets.
  • The Triads and the Tongs: His and Otoya’s outfits are blatantly Chinese, he sells weapons to The Mafia, and he belongs to a secret society called Red Tiger - a name you would expect from a Chinese criminal organization - which is implied to have a hierarchical system if Tokiya’s mentions about "the family" and "our nagging elders" is any indication.

    Dùyè Wáng

Dùyè Wáng/Otoya

Played by: Otoya Ittoki

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/b39b0805_8779_48e3_9036_913a6a8d9b62.jpeg

”If you see a man dressed like me, try not to upset him. Even as a kid, he never backed down once he made up his mind.”

Tokiya’s companion who tries to keep his actions in check. He goes by the name Otoya when outside, and is only referred to as Dùyè Wáng when he’s alone with Tokiya.

  • All Chinese People Know Kung-Fu: He knows kung fu and is asked by Ray to teach him how to do it in Chapter 1 of Otoya’s "Red Tiger Society".
  • Beleaguered Assistant: Jìyè Dōng is free-spirited and sometimes still acts like a spoiled child, so Dùyè Wáng has his hands full from trying to keep his partner from acting impulsively.
  • Denied Food as Punishment: Played for Laugh. Jìyè Dōng is annoyed that Dùyè Wáng refused to do negotiations for him and pointed out how Camillo was testing his skill - which Jìyè Dōng failed to realize, so he threatens to not give Dùyè Wáng any of the peach steamed buns he brought back.
  • Guyliner: He also wears red eyeliner similar to Tokiya, though a little subtler.
  • Sworn Brothers: According to Jìyè Dōng, Dùyè Wáng is like a family to him and and they "made a vow" long ago, suggesting that his relationship with Jìyè Dōng is this.

    Makoto

Played by: Masato Hijirikawa

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/7313631e_21e4_4896_9393_1093c7ed597c.jpeg

”If anything ever happens to me, you can depend on Syori. If I say the word, he will protect you with his life.”

A leader of the Blue Phoenix Syndicate. He comes to Camillo’s territory in an attempt to search for a jewel that can grant wishes, and refuses to back off despite being told how childish a desire it is.

  • All of the Other Reindeer: Eren mentions that Makoto has been looked down upon since he was a child just because he’s not part of the direct line of descendants, causing his Berserk Button.
  • Badass in a Nice Suit: He dresses in a proper three-piece suit usually seen from high-ranking yakuza.
  • Berserk Button: When a robber disarmed by Syori called him and Makoto outcasts, Makoto got so angered he pulled the gun’s trigger and killed the man immediately. He does that again in No More to Rule the moment he realizes the boss of the bandits referred to him as "outsider". Apparently, he harbors a hatred for being seen as an outcast in general because of his All of the Other Reindeer childhood.
  • Childhood Friend: With Eren, whom he reacts with utter joy upon their reunion. While their relationship is tolerated at best by both factions they’re from because it is beneficial, they don’t see each other any less genuinely.
  • Coat Cape
  • Determined Defeatist: He acknowledges that his desire to find the wish-granting jewel is nonsensical when told so by other characters, but he never backs off since he believes one should stick to his dream.
  • Gratuitous Italian: He calls a girl "Signora" in Chapter 2 of his side story, likely an attempt to blend in.
  • Katanas Are Just Better: He uses a katana to swiftly take care of the mobs, befitting the Japanese representatives.
  • The Yakuza: He comes from a crime organization in Japan, which implies that he’s this.

    Syori

Played by: Syo Kurusu

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/91292c34_d522_4779_97f4_d58b03a2107b.jpeg

”Makoto gave me a reason to live. I don't follow the organization. It's all for him.”

Makoto’s attendant, and is absolutely loyal to him.

  • Berserk Button: He noticeably gets worked up when he thinks that the mob he’s facing is underestimating him because he looks like a kid.
  • I Owe You My Life: According to him, Makoto gave him a reason to live.
  • Katanas Are Just Better: He uses a katana to swiftly take care of the mobs.
  • Pint-Size Powerhouse: He is described as looking like a kid, as in short and small, yet can take down an armed taller man in just one strike with his bare hands.
  • Undying Loyalty: He will do anything for Makoto’s sake, murdering or sacrificing himself included.

    Eren

Played by: Ren Jinguji

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/43e6589d_14c7_477b_8bc5_4b130261317b.jpeg

”Makoto is my brother from overseas. Even if you turn on your family, your childhood stays with you. That’s what I think.”

An executive of Zagara family and Makoto’s mysterious acquaintance, who turns out to be his childhood friend.

  • Childhood Friend: With Makoto, whom he treats like a younger brother. While their relationship is tolerated at best by both factions they’re from because it is beneficial, they don’t see each other any less genuinely.
  • Coat Cape
  • Early-Bird Cameo: He appears at the end of Chapter 10 of the No More to Judge event story before properly having his introduction in No More to Rule.
  • Mythology Gag: Ren is once again playing a criminal boss character who makes an Early-Bird Cameo, just like James Renarty of Otoyarsène Lupin: Chronicles of a Thief.

    Silvio

Played by: Cecil Aijima

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/26dd0f31_c801_4d28_bf75_1b3bdbdc1fbd.jpeg

”If Eren did not make me his associate, I would be all alone and have no place in the family. I am very grateful to him.”

Eren’s trusted subordinate.

    Shinon

Played by: Natsuki Shinomiya

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/9102f45d_8fe4_48e4_85b1_4f488b675b75.jpeg

”Aw, all broken. I'm really not much of a cleaner, though. Oh, you over there. Could you lend me a hand?”

A mysterious man with connection to Don Camillo, who just returns to the town after serving his sentence in prison. He’s heavily disassociated with the current state of affairs and is trying to blend in with society again.

  • Beware the Nice Ones: Shinon presents himself as a polite, pleasant man who wants to befriend everyone, yet he will happily kill people if prompted and was a terrifying mafia in his own right.
  • Dissonant Serenity: He shoots a mafia underling who tried to rob him with no hesitation, happily calls their fight a "dance", and kills the latter with a bullet "filled with [his] love".
  • Dull Eyes of Unhappiness: Though it isn’t seen on the Live2D model or artworks, in lore his eyes are described by Makoto as sorrowful and clouded by an "unimaginable darkness".
  • Fish out of Water: It’s evident that he has been quite out of touch with society, and instinctively chooses violence as the way to deal with Camillo’s rival families because back in his day, it was the only way he knew.
  • Silent Scapegoat: He willingly went to prison under his boss’ order to settle a recent conflict, though he made no effort to hide that he could totally break out if he wanted and would do so were he to believe the boss didn’t respect him and his sacrifice.
  • The Social Expert: His friendliness, non-threatening demeanor, and occasional slips that he knows much more than he lets out easily draws people to him, and he has made acquaintance with the entire cast in a very short time.
Camillo: "It seems that Shinon is cozying up to everyone in town. As always, his people skills are unmatched. Of course, such companions have their own motives as well."
  • Stepford Smiler: Despite his efforts to blend in with the peaceful (on the surface) town, Shinon is still stuck in a world of his past where bloodshed is the only way to everything, which makes him feel lonely and out of touch with reality. He tries to smile through it all, as Camillo pointed out.

Daring Attack! Events included

Tropes applied to all

  • Gratuitous German: Their names are numbers in German. Eins is one, Zwei is two, Drei is three and Vier is four.

    Eins

Played by: Syo Kurusu

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/00d099f9_9c22_4424_8810_2c9336168f6d.jpeg

”If you've got a request for me, it'll cost ya, but you can bet I'll see it through! My pride as a pro is on the line!”

A super spy. Alongside his hacker partner, he takes on a job to steal priceless information from the rival company of a client, but danger follows him at every turn.

  • Big Brother Instinct: He’s something akin to a big brother figure to Zwei.
Zwei: "No matter what you wear, Eins, you'll always be like a reliable big brother to me."
  • Brains and Brawn: He does most of the actions and infiltrations. While he does have some knowledge on technology (being able to recognize that Drei was using a former client’s information for hacking), he usually leaves them to the more professional Zwei.
  • In Harm's Way: He brushes aside the idea of having a desk job and living a normal life, deeming it as "boring", and prefers his more exciting and life-threatening spy career. Hilarious in Hindsight peeks in when you look at the businessman Hideo Syozawa of Hero of Justice: Lightwing and realize both him and our Eins here are played by the same person.
”I'd probably be going to work in a suit if I wasn't a spy, but I don't even wanna think about it. It sounds dead boring.”
  • It's All My Fault: Blames himself for Drei’s descent into villainy and believes that had he spent a moment listening to Drei - who was possibly Forced into Evil and needed Eins’ help - instead of storming off that day, things wouldn’t escalate to this point now.
  • Stepford Smiler: Eins had a cheerful demeanor in the first movie, but carried a heavy past.

    Zwei

Played by: Otoya Ittoki

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/2c0654b0_0abc_46a2_9460_09a98d111433.jpeg

”Eins and I make a top-notch combo, huh? I wish he had more faith in my skills, though.”

Eins’ partner, a support from the spy agency. He’s a genius hacker who wants to work directly alongside Eins, but he's told he can't because it's too dangerous. He does his very best to prove himself useful.

  • Brains and Brawn: He is responsible for all the technical problems, hacking and the like. However, despite some action scenes he pulls off, he is not fit the more extreme jumping-across-building level of action.
  • Playful Hacker: He’s a white hat hacker.
  • Nerd Glasses: His trademark features. Drei even calls him "Glasses" instead of "Zwei" (probably because that name once belonged to him).

    Drei

Played by: Ai Mikaze

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/71641e03_3b7f_435e_8532_2022248ff2f1.jpeg

”I have entered the main system. Fufu... When will you discover my tracks, Eins?”

An enemy hacker who has a history with Eins.

  • Brains and Brawn: He lets his Blood Knight partner deal with the more physically active Eins in his place, while himself confronts Zwei in a hacking battle.
  • The Cracker: As Zwei’s Evil Counterpart, he’s a hacker who stole his own employer’s information to use it for a new one, giving no crap about the employer’s safety and privacy.
  • Evil Counterpart: To Zwei, being the former hacker companion of Eins.
  • Evil Former Friend: After Eins left him, Drei committed info steal under Master Null’s order with no restraint and becomes Eins’ enemy.
  • Forced into Evil: At the time Eins discovered Drei using their former employer’s info the first time, Drei clarified that he was ordered to do so by their superior Master Null, and not by his own will.
  • We Used to Be Friends: He was Eins’ old partner, the former holder of the name "Zwei" and share a long history with the spy. Eins however broke the fellowship once he discovered Drei using another employer’s info, which is against the rule of white hat hacker.
  • Undying Loyalty: He immediately shuts down Eins’ offer to mend their relationship and help him walk on a righteous path as he declares his loyalty to Master Null.

    Vier

Played by: Ranmaru Kurosaki

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/6b3899fb_21da_479c_ad66_d0ea3701fd1a.jpeg

”What makes me a great spy is my bold attitude. Confidence is everything. Actin' timid just makes you look more suspicious.”

Drei’s partner.

Played by: Reiji Kotobuki

”Actually, I have something for your ears only. It's a simple but important request. You'll hear me out, right?”

The head of the spy organization.

  • Affably Evil: Null is something of a sociopath, but he’s always cordial when talking to Eins.
  • The Chessmaster: To him, his employees are no more than disposable chess pieces for him to freely move in any way he wants, and he orchestrates everything to steal their rewards in his debut event.
  • Genius Sweet Tooth: He’s addicted to sugar and constantly seen munching on candies and snacks.
  • If I Wanted You Dead...: He makes it clear to Eins that if he really wanted him out of the picture, Eins would be eliminated before he realized it.
  • It Amused Me: He does everything for his own amusement.
  • The Sociopath: Implied. He gleefully manipulates his own employees who see him as a savior into becoming a distraction for him to steal their reward, and then betrays the client just because he doesn’t like them. In Episode 3 in the costume story, he mentions that he would lose his edges if he doesn’t enjoy the occasional on-site thrill and admits he no idea what he truly wants to do. Zwölf also states that Null has little faith in human compassion.

”It seems that something odd happened in the town ahead. I don't know if I can help, but that's where I must go.”

A mysterious traveler who arrives at a small town, where he senses something is amiss.

  • The Atoner: He had planned on using his power to save the young man and atone for the loss of his hometown in some way. However, the young man manages to salvage the situation on his own and shows him a future like that is possible as well.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: He appears to also have faced the same discrimination and Power Incontinence as the young man in the past, but his own hometown remained doomed because there was no "passing traveler" who guided him and undid his mistakes.
  • Hyper-Awareness: He can realize the young man’s preference even though they just meet not long ago. May have something to do with being a Reality Warper.
The Traveler: "I may not look it, but I have pretty sharp intuition."
  • Hyperspace Arsenal: Implied. In Chapter 1 of "Traveler" side story, the young man asks him about how he can carry an awful lot with him - tea set, tea boxes and all - despite not having any heavy package, a question he doesn’t answer. Considering that he’s a Reality Warper, it’s likely that he doesn’t simply find a way to pack his stuffs efficiently.
  • Name Amnesia: When the young man asks for his name, he claims that he no longer remembers his own name since he has been traveling for so long, and he doesn't have one anymore.
  • "Not So Different" Remark: He finds that he and the young man are quite similar since they’re both Reality Warper with almost identical Dark and Troubled Past.
  • Reality Warper: He has similar powers to the young man, allowing him bring the latter back to the real world from his own plane of reality.
  • Psychometry: He can read the young man’s memory from what the latter has touched also via physical contact, such as when he unconsciously touches the painting and gets the first glimpse of his backstory, or knowingly searches for clues about the fabricated world in Chapter 2 of "Traveler" side story by asking the bakery’s decorations.
  • Trademarked Favorite Food: He carries a kettle with him to make tea any time and anywhere, and offers the young man some flowery black tea to calm the latter down.
  • Walking the Earth: His title is "The Traveler", and he is constantly on a journey for unknown reason.

”Walking around the empty town with him really was fun. I'll always remember our time together.”

The only left resident of a small town as everyone else has disappeared. He accepts the traveler’s assistance to solve this mystery, but the more they wander through the empty town, the more he realizes how relevant he is to all of this...

  • All of the Other Reindeer: He has faced a lifetime worth of discrimination from the townspeople just because he has Super-Senses, and couldn’t even walk into a place without someone trying to drive him out. Ren’s card from this event is even named "Outsider".
  • Be Careful What You Wish For: His wish for everyone in the town to disappear so that he wouldn’t be hurt anymore sent him into an alternate reality of his own making, where he’s the only person to exist, along with Laser-Guided Amnesia.
  • Given Name Reveal: In the final episode, he reveals that his real name is Ren.
  • Humble Goal: What he calls his "dreams" are actually very mundane stuffs like seeing his favorite artist’s work without people getting in the way, or wandering around town while munching on bread from the bakery. It’s because the townspeople shunned him that those things are out of his reach.
  • Laser-Guided Amnesia: When asked of his name by the traveler, he suddenly realizes he can't remember anything, even his own name and family, which causes him to break down.
  • Reality Warper: Unwittingly and unknowingly, he’s capable of creating an alternate plane of reality that correspond to his wish of being left alone...though it doesn’t make him any happier.
  • Super-Senses: According to him, he happens to see and hear better than most people.
  • Tomato in the Mirror: He is the reason the townspeople disappeared.

Played by: Ai Mikaze

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/7c8b1028_27fa_4510_9452_f3f93c94be1f.jpeg

”Luke, I asked you to leave me entertainment when you go out. Such mindless boredom would put any human to sleep.”

A sentient doll who was woken up from his slumber by Luke.

  • Animate Inanimate Object: He's a puppet that is taught to move on his own.
  • Child Soldiers: His would-be fate if Luke didn’t teach him humanity, and also the fate of his "siblings" - previous puppets of his creator.
  • Dad's Off Fighting in the War: Well, it’s more like "Creator’s Off Fighting in the War, then He Went Missing", but same idea.
  • I Will Find You: At the end of the event story, he leaves to start the journey to search for his creator.
  • Innocently Insensitive: He casually mentions that he should be able to move as quick as possible so that he can fight on the battlefield, not knowing that Luke is trying his best to prevent it from happening. This promptly freaks Luke out.
  • Living Toys: Created as a doll, yet looks totally like a human with no sign of joints and inexplicably has his own sentience. Once he is taught how to move around, he is indistinguishable from an actual human being.

”Lito taught me to keep moving forward and never look back. After all, just waiting is a vexing endeavour.”

The mysterious man who woke Lito up and offered to teach him how to pose as a human.

  • Career-Ending Injury: He was dismissed from the service after contracting a disease on the battlefield.
  • Delicate and Sickly: He’s suffering from some sort of disease which he caught when fighting on the frontline, causing him to frequently collapse.
  • It's All My Fault: He blames himself for the disappearance of Lito’s creator, since he believes it was because Luke left the service that Lito’s creator was made to join the military in his place and ended up witnessing his beloved creations turned into war machines.
  • Parental Substitute: To Lito. He takes care of Lito and does everything in his capacity to help the doll pass as a human, from teaching him human mannerisms to helping him move on his own. As he was a friend of Lito’s "father", this would also make him his Honorary Uncle.
  • War Is Hell: While it’s unknown how long he was in service before he was dismissed, he appears to carry some traumas from it and is emotionally suffering from his friend’s missing case. This causes him to try his best in order to give Lito humanity, as he doesn’t want his friend’s last creation to turn into a war machine.
Luke: "War brings this world nothing but sadness."

Birdcage in the Old Tower

    Caged One

Played by: Tokiya Ichinose

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/11beb096_b480_4bcc_9205_b910a69f1dbd.jpeg

”How are you this fine day? Although I am in a cage, this simple exchange of greetings distracts me from my loneliness.”

The "occupant" of the birdcage. Probably not a human because he has been around for several generations, and thought to be unable to talk.

  • Because You Were Nice to Me: He starts to get close to the Keeper because he tried to make a conversation with him and didn’t run away when he actually talked.
  • Birdcaged: He’s locked in a literal giant birdcage for presumably centuries.
  • Earn Your Happy Ending: After years of being under captive, he’s finally free and gets to explore the outside world
  • Elective Mute: Because he accidentally scared the previous keepers away by talking, he resorts to remain silent all the time in the presence of human. It’s not until our Keeper that he finally talks again in a long time.
  • His Quirk Lives On: He uses feathers as a bookmark to imitate a human he once befriended, who had gone missing and was never found.
  • It's All My Fault: He believes the reason his first friend disappeared was because the former was finding a way to release him, hence he blames himself.
  • Lying to Protect Your Feelings: He lies that the current Keeper is the first person he knows when in reality he was acquainted with another guy years ago, out of fear that the Keeper would be upset.
  • The Needless: He doesn’t need nourishment and can handle presumably hundreds of years of solitude, though he is not necessarily happy about the latter.
  • Never Learned to Read: He doesn’t know how to read and has to be taught from scratch, probably because of his lengthy confinement.
  • Nice Guy: When the Birdcage Keeper gets to know him, he turns out to be an incredibly good-natured and pleasant guy who resorted to Elective Mute because he doesn’t want to scare any Keeper away.
  • Older Than They Look: He has been around long before our Birdcage Keeper was born.

”So, this is what it feels like when a story is set into motion. I'm lucky to be one of the movers and shakers.”

A completely ordinary young man chosen to be the Birdcage Keeper that year.

  • Bookworm: He complains about the mediocre pay, but comments that this much free time is perfect for a bookworm like him.
  • The Chosen One: One person in the town is chosen to be the Birdcage Keeper annually, and our guy here is the one for this year. He thinks of it more as people pushing an annoying job on others than an honor, however.
  • Dangerous Forbidden Technique: He learns about a spell that allows people to switch souls, and uses it despite the risks so that the Caged One can open the cage. Luckily, things go smoothly.
  • The Generic Guy: He’s all around normal with no significant quirks, talent or power to speak of.
  • I Just Want to Be Special: He is The Generic Guy in a drab rural town, as such, he was looking forward to becoming a Keeper since interacting with the extraordinary secret of the town in the form of the Caged One would help him escape his dull life. When he learns about the soul switching spell, he gets oddly excited to try it despite all the risks, and mentions to the Caged One that he jumped for joy as he stumbled across the info, thinking even an average guy like him "can have a great destiny".

”I only paint what I want. Yet if I could share my thoughts and spread joy through my work... It is my lifelong dream.”

A skilled painter with a sharp tongue and an eccentric personality.

  • Artsy Beret: Wears one to show his status as an artist.
  • Child Prodigy: He has shown his talent since his earliest age, and was praised as being beloved by heavens.
  • Eccentric Artist: He has a detachment to society, obsession with creating the perfect art, and "tends to overthink and notice the stuff most people ignore" - per Roland’s words. These details are hinted to be a result of Autism.
  • Forgets to Eat: One of his most prominent traits is his negligence to daily meal intakes, with Roland noting that he once forgot to eat for three whole days. Roland has to barge into his house everyday to give him food, or else he would literally starve himself without even realizing it.
  • Geek Physique: Roland mentions that he’s "white as a sheet", and apparently he’s weak enough to trip over weeds.
  • No Social Skills: Crowded places give him headaches, and he instinctively hides when he sees a stranger.
  • Heroic Self-Deprecation: He thinks of himself as a burden to Roland, since he believes Roland silently turns down local demands and development proposals regarding destroying the forest because Julian often visits there, even though as the landowner he would benefit from it. His thought process begins to tell him that he’s a hopeless person who has no worth except for his paintings. He also is displeased when he sees his portrayal in Roland’s novel is far too noble.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: A prickly perfectionist who tends to complain whenever his neighbor visits to ensure his survival, but he appreciates Roland’s kindness and thinks his presence is just holding the latter back.
  • Reclusive Artist: Apparently, he refused to engage with society after his works gradually became misunderstood, which caused him to be estranged from his parents over time. Now he locks himself up in his house and constantly churns out paintings which becomes his source of income thanks to Roland, only occasionally leaves for the forest or the park to clear his head.
  • Trash of the Titans: According to Roland, his room is a disaster with tons of canvases pilling up.

Played by: Ranmaru Kurosaki

”First I’d stop by to see his work since the atelier is next to the manor, but he forgets to eat. I gotta watch over him.”

Julian’s neighbor who watches over him. He’s a wealthy landlord, but harbors a passionate dream of becoming an author.

  • Fanboy: He’s practically Julian’s fanboy, seeing how he’s constantly amazed by the latter’s works and determined to show the beauty of his arts to the world. He strives to become an Ascended Fanboy by getting Julian do illustrations for his novel.
  • High-Class Glass: Wears a monocle to show his status as a wealthy landlord.
  • Most Writers Are Writers
  • Nice Guy: He takes care of his Reclusive Artist of a neighbor free of charge, and is the only reason that Julian is still alive and well considering how the latter would starve himself during his singleminded pursuit of art. While he may come off as overwhelming, his kindness, pure adoration and respectful attitude towards Julian and his works really did a lot to keep the latter’s passion going.
  • Write Who You Know: He uses Julian as the inspiration for his novel manuscript, much to the latter’s chagrin.

Starry Observatory

    Altair

Played by: Cecil Aijima

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/0c4b3657_be53_4607_8164_f1401929dea5.jpeg

”The stars always look over me, and they keep me company on lonely nights. I learn much under their soothing presence.”

A brilliant new researcher at the observatory who has produced outstanding results. He must cooperate with Procyon for a joint presentation however, which forces him to deal with his own social awkwardness.

  • Heroic Self-Deprecation:
  • Not a Morning Person: Inverted. He is always the first one to arrive at the observatory, and it takes Procyon many tries to be earlier than him.
  • Not So Stoic: A quiet, solitary man who is usually seen with a stern face, which caused Procyon to first think of him as a serious fellow. It’s not until their outing that Altair starts to show more of his emotions and reveals that he’s not very solemn after all.
  • Parental Abandonment: He mentions that he has lived a lonely life with no family.

    Procyon

Played by: Natsuki Shinomiya

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/0aad0d93_60e3_4a13_a3f5_65789f084ea1.jpeg

”The stars must have led me to a researcher with great ambition. Altair’s passion shines like a first-magnitude star.”

Altair’s partner researcher for the presentation. A reliable individual with an impressive thirst for knowledge, though he’s occasionally absentminded and has as much trouble with communication as Altair.

  • I Will Find You: Has been searching for his missing younger brother, and became an astronomer since he believes if he and his brother chased the same goal, they would have a chance to reunite.
  • Overworked Sleep: He fell asleep while compiling the data, which caused Altair to reflect on how much his weakness has burdened Procyon.
  • The Reliable One: He is usually viewed as dependable and at first took the leading role of the presentation project.
  • You Remind Me of X: Not outright mentioned, but being with Altair makes him recall memories about his younger brother.
Procyon: "When I’m with Altair, bright, nostalgic memories rain down like a meteor shower."

”I'm an exorcist, not a demon. Sorry, but I like to cut to the chase. If you've got a job, ask the church or gimme food.”

An exorcist by a church on the outskirts of town. While eking out a living, he harbors ambitions to become a professional musician.

  • The Ace: He’s noted to be the best exorcist in the town, and also a very skilled musician.
  • Family Business: He grew up in an exorcist family, though he cut tie with them for a while.
  • Kindhearted Cat Lover: He has a cat.
  • Friend to All Living Things: Animal seems to like him while people keeps their distance from him, as opposite to Elegy.
  • Nice Guy: He appears rough, but is actually very kind - soft-hearted, even. He literally takes a total stranger who lost his memory under his wings, and is apologetic about interrogating Credo after the latter reveals the reason for his motives.
  • World Tour: His dream is to travel the world with his bass guitar.
  • Your Tradition Is Not Mine: Downplayed. He isn’t exactly opposed to being an exorcist like his family, as he knows it helps people and willingly does it for a living, but he much prefers becoming a musician.
Bel Canto: ”Just because I grew up in an exorcist family doesn't mean my life is all laid out for me, right? No one gets to choose my path but me.”

    Elegy

Played by: Tokiya Ichinose

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/0cf71c5d_3ad5_4fdb_8d75_1d9d4ac68f8c.jpeg

”I'm not used to hymns yet, but I enjoy Bel Canto's music. At times, he gets carried away and the pitch deviates.”

A quiet young man in black who has lost his memory. He follows Bel Canto out of attraction to his music.

  • Animals Hate Him: He struggles with giving a dog a walk, and animal’s hatred towards him becomes a well-known trait to the townspeople.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: He dresses in black, but aside from being a little weird, he’s very polite and docile. Even more so after the reveal that he is a literal demon.
  • Humanity Is Infectious: Before he managed to steal Bel Canto’s soul, he "experienced emotions, music, and learned of dreams". The time he spent with the exorcist also gives him a rebellious streak that allows him to become a Hunter of His Own Kind.
  • Hunter of His Own Kind: When he betrays his own kind to follow Bel Canto, he traps a fellow demon inside his magical hourglass for Bel Canto to deal with as a repayment for what the exorcist has done for him. Then he goes with Bel Canto on their journey to exorcise demons, making him a literal example.
  • Identity Amnesia: He doesn’t remember anything about himself, not even his own name.
  • Our Demons Are Different: He appears mostly human with no demonic physical traits, has a special device for stealing souls, is hated by animals and gets uncomfortable around choir and sorts. According to the sequel, demons also have the innate ability to befriend people and can be tormented physically.
  • Rebellious Spirit: After experiencing being a human, he has this to say:
Elegy: ”Even if I've remembered my purpose now, it's too late. I refuse to live according to others' expectations, to follow the path set out for me. You agree, yes?”
  • Token Heroic Orc: He is a demon but lost his desire to commit sins after knowing Bel Canto, and is now working to exorcise fellow demons. Naturally, those who don’t know better like Coda and Refrain try to go after his head.
  • Your Soul Is Mine!: At first he attempted to sneak into Bel Canto’s heart to steal his soul.

    Coda

Played by: Otoya Ittoki

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/2d3c508c_fdff_41ef_aa90_28633b649e31.jpeg

”Even if I'm told I should be nicer, angels and demons don't mix. Sweetly plead all you want, but I won't do it! No way!”

A carefree angel with pure-white wings. Coda knows that he himself is a bit of a heretic, so he is drawn to the equally heretical exorcist Bel Canto.

  • Cloudcuckoolander: He asks Bel Canto to make up a song about how sheep feel when they’re being sheared, much to the latter’s exasperation.
  • Evil Redhead: Downplayed. He’s not exactly evil, but some of his actions are morally questionable and he serves as the antagonist figure of the Chords of Curiosity event. He also has Otoya’s red hair.
  • Gold and White Are Divine: He’s a literal angel dressed in white attire adorned with gold details and accessories.
  • Guardian Angel: He claims that he is this for Refrain and apparently some other exorcists by guiding them to demons and instructing them how to deal with them.
  • It Amused Me: He outright says that he wants Refrain to help him escape his boredom a bit longer, and takes a liking to Bel Canto because he’s eccentric exorcist followed by a demon.
  • Light Is Not Good: An angel who thinks Cold-Blooded Torture is the only deserving way to deal with demons, even when they have never committed any misdeed. Not all angels are like him though, since he’s actually something of a rebel in heaven.
  • Manchild: He behaves like a spoiled child who will do and take what he wants without regard for others. Even Bel Canto points it out.
Bel Canto: "You might be an angel, but you’re also a brat."
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: He wants to purge evil, which is good and all, but then his method which involves torture and recruiting followers like a cult is a little...off.
  • Winged Humanoid: Has magnificent white wings, befitting that of an angel.

    Refrain

Played by: Ai Mikaze

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/dae0b67f_81e8_4383_a29f_3674de0af245.jpeg

”I wish to bring greater honor to my exorcist name. It is all I can do, and I am fortunate to have Sir Coda's protection.”

The solemn exorcist who serves Coda.

  • Heel Realization: He realizes Elegy sounds even more human than himself and gets distracted from his job, allowing Elegy to give the demon he were torturing the sweet release of death.
  • Rival Dojos: According to Bel Canto, he comes from a rival exorcist family.
  • Sinister Scythe: He wields a scythe as his weapon.

    Credo

Played by: Camus

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/dbcc74cd_dccf_47f2_b96e_4c8bcdc7ca08.jpeg

” Are you fine with local exorcism rates? My name is Credo. My dear friend Irise and I shall solve your troubles.”

An exorcist who just arrives in the town and wants to take over Bel Canto’s business.

  • BFS: His sword seems to be as long as his torso.
  • Freudian Excuse: His desire to seek fame and wealth stemmed from being born in poverty, and he has abandoned his own past.
  • Glory Seeker
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: At first glance, he’s an opportunistic, greedy fame chaser who looks down on our main characters.
  • Only in It for the Money: He works as an exorcist merely to earn money.
  • Pet the Dog: He is a jerk in a first few episodes, but he genuinely treats Irise like a companion and determines to help the latter recover his memory.
  • Stepford Smiler: Presents himself as a polite, friendly guy to gain people’s trust, which includes constantly smiling and speaking in a higher pitch. He seems more solemn and only uses his actual deep voice when alone with Irise.

    Irise

Played by: Natsuki Shinomiya

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/1fb45702_a3a6_455d_9b77_68b9e1ddcec2.jpeg

” What memories have I lost? I don't have angel wings or a demon tail. When my memories return, will I still be myself?”

Credo’s companion, who suffers from memory loss and is unable to recall who he really is.

  • Ambiguously Human: Irise’s race still remains a mystery. While he tries to find some connection with demons based on the "device" he possesses, Coda’s words implied that he has relation with Heaven as well.
  • Amnesiacs are Innocent: He is simple and kindhearted like an unknowing child, though it contributes to his fear that his true self is far from this.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: Similar to Elegy, he also dresses in all black, but he’s pleasant and nice through and through.
  • Hearing Voices: He mentions that he has the feeling someone is talking to him whenever he’s around demons. The voice shows itself in Episode 2 of Natsuki’s "Chords of Solitude" side story using Irise’s (or rather, Natsuki’s) voice, after he and Credo finished an exorcism.
  • Laser-Guided Amnesia: He has no memory of his past.

Assassin Duo

    Tropes applied for both
  • Fire-Forged Friends: Liberta approached Lacrima out of nowhere and just sticks to him ever since. Lacrima doesn’t appreciate the companionship but tolerated because the other doesn’t rely on him for anything, and when asked what he would do if Liberta were an enemy, Lacrima casually drops that he would have no hesitation to pull the knife on him. That said, Lacrima seems genuinely surprised when he sees Liberta working for his target before he realizes it is a ruse, and thinks a little more highly of the other guy at the end.
  • Foil: Lacrima is serious, morally upright and doesn’t pay attention to anything other than his job - even willing to sleep on the street if that’s more convenient. Liberta meanwhile is sociable and talkative with Grey-and-Gray Morality, he is also particular about what to eat, where to sleep and "won’t accept anything less than adequate lodgings".
  • Gratuitous Italian: Their name are both Italian, with Lacrima means "tear" and Liberta means "freedom". Amusingly enough, those are the feminine form of the words.
  • Professional Killer: They both are experienced assassins and have little to no problem cutting someone’s throat as long as they’re paid.

    Lacrima

  • Hitman with a Heart: Despite being a renowned assassin, he has a strict moral code and only accepts to kill his target if he believes they’re evil, twisted and generally deserve to die.
  • In the Hood: He is always seen with his hood on, as he’s an assassin.
  • The Stoic: Generally serious, professional, and keeps to himself.
    • Not So Stoic: He is genuinely caught off guard by Liberta siding with his target though.

Lacrima’s carefree colleague who happily follows him around, though there seems to be something off about him.

  • Double Agent: In short, he gets a job to defend Lacrima’s target and fights against Lacrima, but then reveals that he’s been on Lacrima’s side all along and betrays his own client.
  • Eyepatch of Power: Wears a black eyepatch and is a capable assassin.
  • The Gadfly: Almost all of his interactions with Lacrima are to get a reaction from the latter, without caring about how Lacrima thinks of him.
  • Nothing Personal: When he goes against Lacrima, he clarifies that he has no hard feelings towards the latter and is just trying to get a job done.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: He really enjoys the blood orange liquor and briefly leaves mid-conversation with Lacrima in order to buy a bottle of one, since it would be the last one he’ll get to have.

”The trick to darts? Buy me a drink and I’ll talk. Nothing wagered, nothing gained. I show kindness to those who earn it.”

A regular at a darts bar called Oasis. He always helps its bartender Kaito out of troubles, and is like a brother to Kaito when they're together. But could there be a hidden side to him?

  • The Ace: He is the best dart player Oasis ever has in their bar, and gives Curb-Stomp Battle to anyone stupid enough to challenge him or make him ask them to use darts as a way to resolve whatever conflict they’re having between him and them.
  • Bad Guys Do the Dirty Work: Takes it upon himself to chase rowdy guests away with his dart skill in Kaito’s place, and personally makes sure that the woman who exploited Kaito’s innocence for her unsavory goal will not dare to come near Oasis ever again.
  • Because You Were Nice to Me:
  • Beware the Nice Ones: He is sociable and very kind towards Kaito, but he doesn’t shy away from threatening woman.
  • Big Brother Instinct: He shelters Kaito from the harsh truth of the world and keeps him safe from shady people in all ways possible.
  • Big Brother Mentor: He teaches Kaito how to be better at darts whenever they’re alone.
  • Gratuitous English: Sprinkles some English in his phrases whenever he feels like it to double the classiness.
  • Heroic Self-Deprecation: Despite the confidence he displays whenever he plays darts, he’s actually quite conscious about himself, admitting that people like him are the reason Kaito often gets into trouble.
  • Professional Gambler: His whole fortune was built on gambling, and he’s rich enough that a parliament member’s son frequently arrives at his place to borrow money, showing that aside from luck he also must have some skills.

”You want to challenge Zero? He’ll accept, but his skills are no joke. Do your best, but don’t make any crazy bets!”

A young man working at the darts bar Oasis who always ends up getting himself into trouble due to his kindness and is saved by his regular, Zero.

  • The Bartender: He is a bartender at Oasis.
  • Big Brother Worship: Not a blood-related big brother, but Kaito looks up to Zero like a beacon of perfection - someone he strives to become.
  • Locked Out of the Loop: He is completely unaware of the scheme behind an expensive vase he was gifted by a female customer (which was wiretapped so that she could extort people who came to the bar) and the fact that Zero has threatened her into stopping the act. Of course, Zero does make an effort into hiding the whole ordeal from him since he saw how Kaito was happy to have the female customer around.
  • Morality Pet: Zero - while not the most law-abiding citizen ever - genuinely cares for Kaito like a younger brother, and does everything in his power to keep his innocence untainted.
  • Nice Guy: Literally described in the summary as such. As Zero laments, he’s basically too nice to be in a world of chaos and deception such as the bar industry.

”You wish to play? That is fine, but I will not hold back. That would be impolite. Tell me when you are ready.”
