The Phantom Thieves

    In General
  • Adaptational Badass: Normal adults in the original game, Persona users here.
  • Age Lift: All the Phantom Thieves in the ACAU are all aged down to be in the late teens, just slightly older than the ages of the canon Phantom Thieves. Sojiro, Yoshida, and Shido get the biggest age lifts, as they were originally at least in their 40s or 50s, while Iwai, Kawakami, Ohya, Chihaya, Sae, and Tae were all in their 20s and 30s, making their age lift less drastic.
  • Badass in Distress: All save for Sojiro and Sae are behind bars while in Makoto's Palace.
  • Chick Magnet: The dudes make a bet with Ohya where if they can get girls' numbers in Hawaii, she'll buy them food. Sojiro gets five numbers, Iwai gets two, and Yoshida gets twenty.
  • Expy: Besides taking traits from their canon selves, Scruffy mentioned on twitter that he roughly drew the characterization of the main characters from other characters in anime and manga:
  • Heroes Prefer Swords: Sojiro has a Sword Cane, while Kawakami has a cutlass.
  • Original Generation: With the exception of Sojiro, who has Robin Hood, all of the Phantom Thieves' Personas are based on different figures from both history and mythology.

    Sojiro Sakura / "Boss"
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/acau_sojiro.png
Click here to see Robin Hood
Arcana: 0. The Fool
Persona: Robin Hood
Leader of the Phantom Thieves. An orphaned boy who fell in love with Wakaba Isshiki, witnessing and still recovering from her death by car accident years later, he lives with his caregiver, the eccentric Futaba Sakura, and discovers the Metaverse when a strange app uploads onto his phone. His codename is Boss, and his Persona is Robin Hood, the legendary 14th Century thief of Sherwood Forest who steals from the rich to give to the poor. In some retellings, Robin Hood is also associated with overthrowing Prince John, a villainous pretender to the English throne, The Crusades, and the search for the Holy Grail.
  • Adaptation Deviation: One of two members of the Phantom Thieves to change arcana from canon. He goes from the Hierophant to the Fool, as the latter Arcana is standard for all Persona 3 onwards protagonists.
  • Adaptational Heroism: Applies to his Persona. In the original game, Robin Hood belonged to the treacherous Goro Akechi. Here, he is wielded by the undoubtedly heroic Sojiro.
  • Berserk Button: Don't mention anything about his past or his affiliation with Futaba.
  • Brilliant, but Lazy: The fic describes him as "Fairly smart, but will take shortcuts and cheat on tests."
  • The Casanova: Has dated a number of girls at school, with all of these relationships only ever lasting from a couple of days to even a week.
  • The Charmer: He's naturally charismatic to girls and boys alike, flattering the girls to score a date or the boys to get out of sticky situations. His usage of "Max Charm" is practically a Running Gag.
  • Chick Magnet: True to OG Sojiro's boasts, this Sojiro is a natural ladykiller in high school, even capturing the hearts of the much older looking Velvet Twins.
  • Chivalrous Pervert: Skirt chaser he may be, but he can't stand when others take advantage of the girls he'd previously dated and makes sure not to overstep his boundaries (to an extent) with them.
  • Conveniently an Orphan: It's stated in Scruffy's Twitter that both of Sojiro's parents are dead.
  • Dark Secret: Unrevealed for now, but it's a secret he doesn't want Shujin knowing about to the point where Kamoshida's blackmailing him with it.
  • Extremely Protective Child: When Futaba jokes about overhearing some of his classmates calling her a 'MILF', Sojiro is thinking about killing said perverts.
  • Happily Adopted: In this AU, he's adopted by Futaba. They bicker a lot and don't always see eye to eye, but they love each other, as much as Sojiro doesn't admit it out loud.
  • The Hero: He takes Joker's place as The Leader of the Phantom Thieves and the protagonist of the narrative (although he's not the plot's "delinquent transfer student").
  • High-School Hustler: This Sojiro goes through girls like tissues and encourages other boys to exploit their feelings of grief. He's not cruel exactly, but he's someone who does whatever is easiest for him- even if that means ignoring brawls and Kamoshida's implicit bullying.
  • I Let Gwen Stacy Die: Supplementary images and the comic itself show that his inability to save Wakaba or help out Futaba during her mourning period made him feel powerless.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Sojiro is, in the fic's own words, "an asshole, but one who will die for his friends."
  • Kind Hearted Cat Lover: Cats are listed as one of Sojiro's likes.
  • The Lost Lenore: His Serial Romeo tendencies are implied to be a result of his trauma regarding Wakaba’s death.
  • Love at First Sight: Flashbacks show that he was smitten with Wakaba ever since he first met her in middle school.
  • Mix-and-Match Weapon: His signature weapon is a combination of Cane Sword and Whip Sword, much like the Threaded Cane.
  • Must Have Caffeine: Coffee is listed as one of Sojiro's likes.
  • Oh, Crap!: Freaks out and drops an F-bomb upon meeting the Reaper during his first trip into Mementos by accident. Luckily, his unawakened Persona keeps it at bay long enough for him to make it back.
  • One Head Taller: Has this dynamic with some of the girls, but it's inverted with Lavenza, who's a good foot taller than Sojiro.
  • Precision F-Strike: He drops the F-bomb when Kawakami pushes him about targeting Futaba.
Sojiro: YOU DON'T KNOW A DAMN THING ABOUT WHAT FUTABA NEEDS!! GET OFF YOUR FUCKING HIGH HORSE!!!
  • Red Is Heroic: Like Joker, Sojiro maintains a red color motif in his Metaverse outfit. His casual shirt is pink, though.
  • Sad Clown: It's implied that all his flirting is his way of coping with his home situation.
  • Serial Romeo: All the girls who've dated him note that he treats them with as much respect and care as a regular lover, no matter how long their courtship lasts.
  • Shout-Out: His entire Phantom Thief outfit is one to Bloodborne.
  • Supreme Chef: A notably good cook, with a signature curry dish that's popular at Leblanc. His previous exes find his cooking skills a very attractive trait.
  • Sword Cane: Sojiro uses a cane that can turn into a Whip Sword as his primary weapon.

    Sadayo Kawakami / "Madame"
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/acau_kawakami.png
Click here to see Anne Bonny
Arcana: XIV. Temperance
Persona: Anne Bonny
A very hard working student. Not only does she act as her homeroom’s class rep, she also has to work a part time job in a kitty cafe in Akihabara. She supports herself, so money is tight. Her codename is Madame, and her Persona is Anne Bonny, companion of the equally infamous Calico Jack, and one of the most famous female pirates in history.
  • Appropriated Appellation: Her codename of Madame was adapted from Sojiro sarcastically calling that in response to her request to have a more feminine codename.
  • Blow You Away: Kawakami uses wind skills in battle.
  • Cosplay CafĂ©: Yep, she still works as a maid. She gains a cat theme too.
  • Held Back in School: Kawakami was held back for two years because of personal issues.
  • I Love You Because I Can't Control You: Kawakami is one of the very few girls in Sojiro's life that isn't completely charmed by his antics or his looks. As much as Sojiro doesn't like to admit it yet, he is very attracted to Kawakami's no-nonsense attitude.
  • Insult Backfire: Sojiro mockingly calling her "Madame" for her seeming domineering attitude led her to reclaim the insult as her Metaverse codename.
  • Minor Living Alone: She supports herself, hence her part time job in a kitty cafe.
  • Only Sane Man: Kawakami is described as the one who keeps the team from doing stupid shit.
  • Pirate Girl: Her Metaverse outfit is styled after pirates, and her Metaverse weapons are a cutlass and flintlock. Fittingly enough, her Persona was one of the most famous female pirates in history.
  • Screw Yourself: In one image, a shadow Kawakami is shown rubbing the nether regions of regular Kawakami.
  • Workaholic: Since she lives by herself, Kawakami works in her free time in order to pay off her living expenses.

    Munehisa Iwai / "Gecko"
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/acau_iwai.png
Click here to see Black Bart
Arcana: XII. The Hanged Man
Persona: Black Bart
Son of a prominent Yakuza leader, Kaoru, in which he indulged in actively helping his father. Kaoru later takes care to get the two off the grid, in the hopes to give Iwai a normal life. His codename is Gecko, and his Persona is the wild west outlaw Black Bart.
  • Amazon Chaser: Nobunaga (Hifumi Togo's daughter) kicked his ass in a fighting game once, and he's been smitten with her ever since.
  • Animal Motifs: Like in canon, the gecko. It's more pronounced due to his codename, as well his mask resembling one and his Persona taking on a more reptilian appearance.
  • Atomic Superpower: Iwai uses nuclear skills in combat.
  • Delinquents: Iwai is referred to this by Kawakami, informing Sojiro that the incoming transfer student, who will be in his class, is trouble. Iwai, missing his first day, beat up three male students in an alleyway and Sojiro, who was passing by and saw his knocked out peers, is scared off and fears the former must be the troubled transfer student. This gets confirmed when Iwai finally appears to class the next day, giving an intimidating introduction and is assigned to sit behind Sojiro, which agitated the latter.
  • Face of a Thug: Iwai's got this so bad that trying to smile really unnerves his friends. Ohya especially freaks out upon seeing it.
  • Foil: In a way, to Joker. Both are transfer students who get made out to be being violent criminals by Shujin's gossip-mongers. But while Joker is the victim of a falsified assault case, Iwai is introduced actually beating up a bunch of thugs and has legitimate history with the Yakuza.
  • The Gunslinger: Unlike his allies (or the original cast), Iwai can use multiple types of guns. Also, his Persona carries two revolvers and shotguns.
  • Lizard Folk: His Persona Black Bart looks like a green reptile person in Cowboy attire.
  • Machete Mayhem: Iwai uses a machete in combat.
  • Outlaw: His Metaverse outfit is based after Western outlaws. Adding to that, his Persona not only was considered as a gentlemen bandit, was one of the most notorious stagecoach robbers during the 1870s and 1880s.
  • Pervert Revenge Mode: A rare male example. When Ohya spies on the dudes in an onsen, he throws a bucket at her head.
  • The Un-Smile: The poor boy cannot smile to save his life. All of his attempts either creep the others out, or in Ohya's case, scare the living daylights out of them.
  • Wrestler in All of Us: In the Operation: Beach Hunt comic, Iwai got two girls' numbers after he suplexes some dude who was harassing them.

    Ichiko Ohya / "Scout"
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/acau_ohya.png
Click here to see Mata Hari
Arcana: XV. The Devil
Persona: Mata Hari
A reporter who aims to bring the truth to the headlines, not letting the dirt of the school slide under her. Sometimes it can be thought of as gossip by other students, so she’s made a fair share of enemies. Her codename is Scout, and her Persona is Mata Hari, Dutch spy and the most iconic example of Femme Fatale Spy.
  • Butt-Monkey: Tends to get the short end of the comic relief stick in some comics, such as when she gets hit in the head for peeping on the guys, getting scared by Iwai's "smile" or betting the guys on failing to get a girl’s number before they come back with multiple.
  • Composite Character: Besides taking traits from canon Ohya, this version of the character also takes traits from Morgana. She has a cat motif like him, serves as the Thieves' initial navigator, and is the (self proclaimed) Series Mascot of the AU.
  • Good Bad Girl: She spies on the guys in an onsen, and gets a bucket to the head courtesy of Iwai for it. She's also openly lustful of her teachers (particularly Coach Sakamoto) and makes no secret that she's boy-crazy. All that being said she's still ride-or-die for her team and knows not to bring her perversions to unwanted conversations.
  • Irony: She's sworn off drinking alcohol because she claims reporters require a clear head, but her canon counterpart was an alcoholic and commonly found at the Crossroads bar.
  • Petite Pride: Ohya doesn't seem to be bothered by her small chest. If anything, she's way more confident than most girls of her size.
  • Psychic Powers: Ohya uses psychokinesis skills in battle.
  • Series Mascot: This comic has her announce herself to be the AU's mascot by slapping on Kawakami's cat ears and tail.
  • Support Party Member: Before Chihaya comes into the picture, Ohya serves as the Thieves' initial navigator.

    Tae Takemi / "Doc"
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/acau_takemi.png
Arcana: XIII. Death
Persona: Metrodora
A graduate of Shujin Academy, and is now in college along with interning at a local hospital. She can’t do too much since she’s still learning the ropes. She was ill as a child, and was inspired to become a doctor. Her codename is Doc, and her Persona is Metrodora, a Greek physician and author of the oldest medical text known to have been written by a woman, On the Diseases and Cures of Women.
  • Cold Sniper: She uses a sniper rifle in combat, and is a stoic goth. For bonus points, she also uses ice skills.
  • Combat Medic: Serves the role as the primary healer on the team. Appropriately, her Persona, Metrodora, was an ancient Greek physician who wrote On the Diseases and Cures for Women, one of the oldest medical texts in existence.
  • Erotic Asphyxiation: She has a choking fetish.
  • Goth: Gloomy type. Her character notes specify that goth makeup was what they were going for with her.
  • Height Angst: Often comments to Sae about how she'd want some of her height given to her.
  • Improbable Weapon User: She uses surgical needles as melee weapons.
  • Loony Fan: Tae is one for Gas Chamber... to the point of ripping off her clothes in excitement at a concert. The streak in her hair is also a reference to Eikichi.
  • Not So Above It All: She joins Sojiro and Ichiko in their chant for Tora to take the rap alias 'BDT'.
  • Personality Powers: Takemi uses ice skills in combat, along with curses. Her gloomy and isolated background match these kinds of powers well.
  • Plague Doctor: Wears a plague doctor mask as part of her Doc costume.
  • Sickly Child Grew Up Strong: She used to be very sick in her childhood, and she still shows signs of it sometimes, but she's much healthier now. Her newfound Metaverse powers also give her strength she's never had before.
  • Whole Costume Reference: The color scheme of her clothes in her second portrait references that of Shadow Naoto Shirogane.

    Toranosuke Yoshida / "Titan"
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/acau_toranosuke.png
Arcana: XIX. The Sun
Persona: Odysseus
The student council president of Shujin Academy, though with a bit of hubris. His codename is Titan, and his Persona is the legendary Greek hero Odysseus.
  • Atrocious Alias: His temporary MC Handle of "Big Dick Tora". He despises the name and is rather embarrassed to say it, but he wasn't the one who came up with it anyway. Still, at least a little more bearable than "Failnosuke".
  • Big Beautiful Man: A rather chubby young man, but still attractive. Not that he sees himself as that.
  • Doesn't Like Guns: Yoshida eschews the use of firearms in combat, considering them to be unvirtuous. If he needs to fight at range, he uses the tactic of "Throwing Your Shield Always Works".
  • Luckily, My Shield Will Protect Me: Yoshida uses a shield as his primary weapon in combat, both in short and long range.
  • Manly Facial Hair: Just look at the white whiskers that Odysseus is sporting and tell me that you're not intimidated.
  • Milking the Giant Cow: Official artwork depicts him gesturing emphatically with his arms during a speech.
  • Nice Guy: During the Hawaii vacation, he manages to get 20 girls' phone numbers out of sheer kindness (he delivered a Rousing Speech to a team of hula dancers that had just lost a competition).
  • Our Centaurs Are Different: Odysseus is designed as a centaur, in reference to him being the creator of the Trojan Horse.
  • Playing with Fire: Yoshida uses fire skills in battle.
  • Student Council President: Takes Makoto's place as president of Shujin's student council in the AU, as an allusion to his original self's political background.
  • Taking the Bullet: Before he awakens his Persona, Yoshida takes an attack meant for Sojiro and nearly burns to death. Luckily Odysseus (a fire-resistant Persona) comes out in time, allowing him to survive and help take down the enemy.
  • Weight Woe: Yoshida is painfully aware of his status as the heaviest member of the Thieves. He has a complex about his weight, not helped by Kamoshida making him feel insecure in volleyball. He's also the only boy on the team who wears a top at the beach because of his weight insecurities.

    Chihaya Mifune / "Sibyl"
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/acau_mifune.png
Arcana: X. The Wheel of Fortune.
Persona: Pythia
A Kosei High student known for making 100% correct fortunes, and a firm Fatalist. Her codename is Sibyl, and her Persona is Pythia, the high priestess and oracle of the Temple of Apollo at Delphi.
  • Accent Slip-Up: She's originally from the countryside, so like many she covers her native accent with a neutral Tokyo dialect. Whenever she gets flustered, she starts slipping up.
  • The Baby of the Bunch: She's the youngest member of the group until Takuto presumably joins, being a second year compared to the rest of them being third years and college students. Knowing she'll be the only one left in high school when they inevitably graduate makes her feel insecure.
  • Big Eater: She cooks and eats a lot due to her having a metabolism that rivals Olympic athletes. It also leads her to develop a strange obsession with discovering what Shadows taste like.
  • Cool Chair: Her Persona takes the form of a throne/angel.
  • Cute and Psycho: Just look at the sketch of her interacting with Haru's canon counterpart!
  • The Fatalist: Like her mainline counterpart, a firm believer of this philosophy, until Sojiro snaps her out of it. Still shows signs of this from time to time, such as the "Graduation" comic.
  • Hair of Gold, Heart of Gold: She's a little out there, but she's genuinely one of the nicest of the Thieves.
  • In the Hood: Her "Sibyl" gear sports a prominent hood, as does her hypothetical Persona Dancing default outfit.
  • Extreme Omnivore: Chihaya has a....strange obsession about eating Shadows. It’s often Played for Laughs.
  • Our Angels Are Different: Pythia’s design takes cues from earlier depictions of angels, which were far more monstrous than the typical portrayal in modern media.
  • Seers: Has genuine premonition abilities, which saved the Thieves more than once. Her first encounter with them even has her prevent them from getting into a subway accident with her future sight.
  • Support Party Member: Once she joins the Thieves, Chihaya takes this role from Ohya and becomes the team's permanent navigator character.
  • Supreme Chef: Knows how to cook a variety of delicious country food. To congratulate the Shujin students on their graduation, Chihaya made them a banquet by herself.

    Sae Nijima / "Ace"
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/acau_nijima.png
Click here to see Joan of Arc
Arcana: VIII. Justice
Persona: Jeanne d'Arc
An aspiring prosecutor in college who, much like her peers, is a workaholic. She might also suffer from a bit of loneliness since her sister, Makoto, is always busy as Chief Police Commissioner. Her codename is Ace, and her Persona is Jeanne d'Arc, a maiden who tried to end the Hundred Year War, guided by a voice she believed to be God himself, and was burned as a witch at the stake.
  • The Ace: Not only a good student, but also one of the best physical fighters on the Thieves. Sojiro is thankful that she's on their side for the time being.
  • Adaptation Deviation: One of two members of the Phantom Thieves to change arcana from canon. She goes from Judgement to Justice.
  • Berserk Button: Do not make fun of her love for Neo Featherman.
  • Closet Geek: She's a fan of Neo Featherman.
  • Cool Bike: Much like her sister in canon, Sae's Persona Jeanne d'Arc takes the form of a bike.
  • Empowered Badass Normal: Even before getting her Metaverse powers, her profile states that she's capable of taking down a man in three seconds flat, and that she's had to do so five times since starting college.
  • Hand Cannon: Sae uses a Desert Eagle in combat.
  • Huge Schoolgirl: She's a college student, and a fair bit taller than the other girls. Sojiro even notes she's about as tall as he is.
  • Light 'em Up: Sae uses Bless skills in combat, alongside Lightning.
  • Mythology Gag:
    • Her Thief outfit and Persona take many cues from Makoto as Queen and her Persona Johanna.
    • Some artwork depicts her with hair pins in a pattern resembling the Roman numerals for the number 8, referencing the Justice Arcana being card #8 amongst the Major Arcana; which is just like the Female Protagonist of Persona 3 Portable having hair pains in a pattern resembling the Roman numerals for 13, referencing the Death Arcana.
  • Statuesque Stunner: She's easily the tallest of the female thieves, about as tall as Sojiro (who's shown to be about 6'0", something that doesn't go unnoticed by him), and is most definitely quite beautiful. Later confirmed to be 5'8", thus qualifying her.
  • "Well Done, Son" Guy: Makoto's dialogue in this comic indicates that Sae longs for her older sister's approval.

    Masayoshi Shido / "Swan"
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/shido_6.png
A young man with very big dreams, he's a graduate from Kosei High, getting top marks and paving his way into the political sphere. He also often helps his father, Goro Shido, chief investigator. His codename is Swan, and his Persona is currently unknown.
  • Ambition Is Evil: As expected of a young Shido, he has grand ambitions of enterring the political world and becoming prime minister.
  • Baldness Angst: As shown in the 2nd anniversary picture for the AU, he really hates the Bald of Evil his canon self sports.
  • Cool Shades: Sports a pair of orange-tinted sunglasses just like his canon counterpart.
  • The Friend Nobody Likes: Like canon Akechi, he doesn't really get along well with the other Phantom Thieves; for example, Sae tells him he has a very punchable face while Iwai covers his face in a New Year's photo.
  • Meaningful Name: At first glance, giving a kid who was the Big Bad of the main universe a codename like "Swan" sounds mighty ironic, given the bird's usual stereotyping as a delicate and graceful animal. However, swans are known to be very aggressive and hateful creatures.
  • Mythology Gag:
    • In his introduction sheet, he claims that he always wanted a boat, which is the form his Palace took in canon.
    • His Phantom Thief attire is basically the same as Canon Akechi's, only with purple instead of red.
  • Palette Swap: His Phantom Thief outfit is almost identical to Akechi's, except with purple accents instead of red.
  • Purple Is Powerful: Is often seen wearing purple, and in canon was one of the most powerful targets the Phantom Thieves faced.
  • Royal Rapier: Wields a rapier in battle.
  • Tempting Fate: A sketch shows him making fun of Canon Sojiro's receding hair line, before being left speechless at the sight of his future self's bald head.

    Takuto Maruki / "Rook"
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/maruki.png
A first year who helps Mishima, the school counselor. His codename is Rook, and his Persona is currently unknown.
  • The Baby of the Bunch: He's a first-year student, while the other Phantom Thieves are mostly third years with a few college students (Tae, Sae, Shido) and one second-year (Chihaya).
  • Meaningful Name:
    • His codename "Rook" means to trick or cheat. But in chess, a rook is a castle who's main job is to defend the other pieces, fitting given how in canon he wishes to protect everyone by trapping them in a dream world of their heart's desires.
    • More subtly, "Rook" may be a similarly chess-themed reference to the Metaverse battle form of his canon self, who appeared as a bishop.
  • Mythology Gag:
    • He is said to help the school counselor (Mishima) from time to time, which was his primary job in the canon universe.
    • His Phantom Thief outfit is a tweaked version of his Metaverse battle form appearance from canon.

Targets

    Takamine Murada
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/takemine.png
Click here to see his Shadow form

The principal of Shujin Academy. He appears to be a nice guy, but in actuality has been taking advantage of his students whom he views as his "rightful harem". His Palace takes the form of an Indian palace, where his Shadow rules as sultan.

  • Amazing Technicolor Population: His Shadow has blue skin.
  • "Arabian Nights" Days: His Palace has a Middle Eastern theme, compared to the more traditional European appearance of Kamoshida's Palace.
  • Big Fancy Castle: His Palace takes the form of a massive castle, only with an Indian theme to contrast canon Kamoshida.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: Puts on the facade of a kindly principal, but is in truth a depraved sexual predator who molests his students behind closed doors.
  • Original Character: Was created by the artist to take Kamoshida's role as the first target of the Phantom Thieves.
  • Starter Villain: The first major target the Phantom Thieves face in the AU, taking the place of Kamoshida.
  • Suspiciously Similar Substitute: A school staff member suspected, and later confirmed, to have been sexual assaulting his students? He sounds a lot like canon Kamoshida. In fact, Kamoshida here is related to him, which is how he's been getting away with his own actions.

    Hinahara Sakimaru
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/hinahara.png
Click here to see her Shadow form

A renowned doctor at the local hospital who is secretly involved in human trafficking and Organ Theft. Her Palace takes the form of a mausoleum, where her Shadow resides as the local undertaker.

  • Ambiguously Brown: She has brown skin, but it's unknown if she has mixed heritage or simply has tanned skin.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: A friendly doctor who puts up the front of being a "guardian angel" whilst secretly being involved in human and organ trafficking.
  • Females Are More Innocent: Averted. While the female Palace Rulers in the original game (namely Futaba Sakura and Sae Nijima) are nowhere near as depraved as the male targets, Sakimaru takes the place of Madarame as the Phantom Thieves' second major target and her crimes consist of human and organ trafficking, putting her on par with Kaneshiro in terms of vileness.
  • Human Traffickers: She uses her position at the local hospital to traffic humans.
  • Mythology Gag: Might be based off the unnamed target in the original game's Bad Ending, who was an organ trafficker.
  • Original Character: Much like Takamine Murada, Sakimaru was created as an original antagonist for this AU.
  • Slasher Smile: Her Shadow sports a deranged grin in her official artwork.
  • Technicolor Eyes: Shadow Hinahara has the typical golden irises of a Shadow, but her sclerae are blood-red instead of white.
  • Tears of Blood: Her Shadow sports face paint reassembling tears streaming down her cheeks, giving off this impression.
  • White Hair, Black Heart: Her Shadow possesses white hair, and she has been involved in human trafficking.

    Futaba Sakura
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/futaba_0.png

Sojiro's adoptive mother and the owner of Cafe Leblanc.

  • The Cracker: Implied to still be this, with her profile listing her likes as creating trojan viruses and cosplay.
  • Fangirl: A longtime fan of the Phoenix Ranger Featherman series, with posters of R adorning her room walls.
  • Gamer Chick: Like her mainline counterpart, Futaba is an avid gamer. Sojiro often complains about her spending nights doing nothing but playing online.
  • In Spite of a Nail: Just like her mainline counterpart, Futaba eventually has to have her heart stolen due to lingering guilt and complications resulting from Wakaba's death.
  • Meaningful Rename: After taking in Sojiro, she changed her last name from Isshiki to match his.
  • New Parent Nomenclature Problem: In an inversion of their mainline dynamic, Sojiro almost never calls Futaba "Mom".
  • Outliving One's Offspring: Wakaba is her teenage daughter in this AU, and she still dies a few years prior to the story.
  • Stacy's Mom: While she's plenty proud of her own appearance, it's implied that other boys find her attractive as well. Shido as least explicitly tells Sojiro he finds his mother hot.
  • Womanchild: Despite her Age Lift, she is still just as mature as her canon self. The most notable incident is when she decides that 30GB of her personal hentai collection is an appropriate 18th birthday gift for Sojiro (who is naturally repulsed).

    Makoto Nijima
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/acau_makoto_3.jpg
Click here to see her Shadow form
Sae's older sister, and the chief police commissioner of the Tokyo Police Department. Her Palace takes the form of a colosseum, where her Shadow hosts fights to the death as a gladiator.
  • Adaptational Villainy: In canon, she was one of the Phantom Thieves, joining them at the third Palace. Here, she's now one of the Phantom Thieves' targets, possessing a Palace of her own.
  • Five-Second Foreshadowing: In the Twitter comic "Colosseum", the ruler calls Sae's "little sister seeking [her] approval." The last scene of the comic shows the ruler to be Makoto herself.
  • Gladiator Games: Her Palace is set up around these, where the Phantom Thieves have to go against some of the strongest Shadows in her arena in order to advance.
  • How We Got Here: Implied. One artwork depicts her as taking her sister's place in canon as the one interrogating the Phantom Thieves' leader after his capture (Sojiro, in this case).
  • Workaholic: Being the police commissioner certainly isn't easy, especially when there's the Phantom Thieves to worry about. She even tells Futaba that her work hours tend to be long and tiresome, to the point where she looks forward to having a cup of coffee at Leblanc.

Velvet Room

    Igor

The master of the Velvet Room, who Sojiro meets in a dream within the Velvet Room, and seeks to rehabilitate him to stop the coming ruin facing the world.

  • Distinguishing Mark: Unlike his normal appearance, Igor this time around appears to have a large scar on his head. Considering that in canon the being calling himself "Igor" is actually Yaldabaoth, and he was killed by a bullet to the head, this has some interesting implications.
  • In Spite of a Nail: While most of the characters have been swapped and had their ages adjusted, Igor still plays the same role as he did in the original game. Perhaps justified since the ageswap only applies to Persona 5's characters, and Igor is a recurring character across the entire series.

    Caroline and Justine
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/justine_and_caroline.png
Justine (L), Caroline (R)

The twin wardens that assist Sojiro during his time in the Velvet Room.

Tropes as Lavenza:

  • Expy: Of the Plain Doll. She towers over Sojiro, has a calm, soothing personality, and addresses him as "good trickster" just as the Doll calls the Player Character "good hunter".
  • Statuesque Stunner: Lavenza is briefly seen in Caroline and Justine's character page, and she is a full foot taller than the already 6' Sojiro.

Shujin Academy Staff

    Ryuji Sakamoto
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ryuji_5.png
The gym teacher and volleyball coach at Shujin Academy, and currently a single dad helping to provide for his daughter, Rika. He lost his wife in a traffic accident, and has since tried to live for the both of them.
  • Adaptational Curves: Has a more muscular build compared to his canon counterpart.
  • Adaptation Dye-Job: Inverted. He lacks the dyed hair of his canon counterpart.
  • Breaking the Cycle of Bad Parenting: Assuming he retains his canon backstory and relationship with his abusive father, Ryuji is clearly doing his best to provide a completely different experience for his daughter.
  • Cool Teacher: He's shown to be encouraging towards his players and tries to fill the shoes that Shiho left behind.
  • Doting Parent: Clearly crazy about his daughter, even showing off pictures of her at Futaba's coffee shop.
  • Dye Hard: Averted in-universe. He doesn't dye his hair like in canon, so it remains its natural shade of black.
  • Good Counterpart: To canon Kamoshida. Both are teachers who coach volleyball at Shujin, with Ryuji even having an appearance reminiscent of Kamoshida's canon counterpart. However, Ryuji is kind and encouraging towards his students and is in turn well-liked within the student body; a far cry from the abusive, perverted monster Kamoshida was in the original game.
  • Hot Teacher: A sketch of Ohya interacting with canon Ryuji has her exclaim that he's "nowhere near as hot as his older self".

    Yuuki Mishima
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/mishima_4.png
Shujin's guidance counselor. While he's a bit of a pushover and isn't respected by most students, he always tries his best for them. His hard-edged wife Ranju owns a ramen shop in town.
  • Endearingly Dorky: Just look at his portrait. Likely a reason why someone as tough as Ranju was so attracted to him.
  • Fan Boy: Retains this trait in regards to the Phantom Thieves, as he is still the admin of the Phan-Site and sees them as a ray of hope during his own possible mid-life crisis.
  • Foil: To canon Maruki. Both are counselors, but he's been working at the school for a while and isn't that respected, while Maruki was hired temporally after Kamoshida's confession and is beloved by the entire student body.
  • Opposites Attract: His wife Ranju is a former yankee gang leader with a gruff disposition, whereas Mishima is easily intimidated and stutters when he confesses to her in high school. It works, despite her protestations to the contrary.

    Shiho Suzui
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/shiho.png
Formerly the volleyball coach at Shujin Academy, she left the school when rumors of her relationship with Ann Takamaki came to light. She now works as a personal trainer and stunt double for the actors Ann works with.
  • Adaptational Angst Downgrade: Instead of being Driven to Suicide after suffering physical and sexual abuse at the hands of a depraved teacher, Shiho simply lost her job due to her student Kamoshida spreading rumours about her love life.
  • Cool Teacher: When Yoshida is embarrassed by having to sit out a volleyball game due to Kamoshida's teasing, she encourages him and asks him to help her move some equipment in exchange for some volleyball tips.
  • Hide Your Lesbians: Has a Secret Relationship with Ann, but the nature of their careers makes an openly lesbian relationship impossible, and thanks to Kamoshida, got kicked out of school.
  • Secret Relationship: With Ann, due to the nature of their careers making an openly lesbian relationship more or less impossible.

Other Characters

    Wakaba Isshiki
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/wakaba.png
Daughter of Futaba Sakura, who fell in love with Sojiro while in middle school. Sadly, her life was taken by a car accident, which still deeply affects Sojiro and Futaba to this day.
  • Bespectacled Cutie: She wears glasses and has a bashful appearance in her artwork.
  • In Spite of a Nail: While her status with Futaba is switched, Wakaba still had a thing going on with Sojiro and dies, causing both Futaba and Sojiro to break in the wake of her death.

    Suguru Kamoshida
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/dkidp40uuaams59.jpeg
The star volleyball player at Shujin Academy, known as the "Volleyball Prince". His relation to Principal Murada allows him to bully the student body with impunity. Despite his cool facade, he's a despicable piece of shit.
  • The Bully: In contrast to his canon counterpart, this interation of Kamoshida is a more traditional example of a school bully. Much like in the original game, Kamoshida dominates the school environment through fear and intimidation, sexually harasses female students and uses gossip to tarnish the reputations of whoever he dislikes. The main difference is that he's a student instead of a teacher; thus he's in the same age demographic as his victims. His influence is thankfully tempered as a result of this, though the worst of his canonical self's crimes are commited by Principal Murada instead.
  • Demoted to Extra: He no longer has a Palace, with Takamine taking his place as the Phantom Thieves' first target. Scruffy has stated that his desires here aren't distorted enough for him to have a Palace, though his Shadow is present within Mementos.
  • Foil: To Sojiro. Both are popular male "Top Dog" students with serial womenizing tendencies, but while Sojiro is kind and respectful to the many women he seduces, Kamoshida uses fear, intimidation and heavily-implied blackmail to coerce his female victims into spending time with him.
  • Handsome Lech: He's much easier on the eyes than his canon counterpart, but he's just as gross to the female populace.
  • Hate Sink: At no point in any of the information released about him does he come off as sympathetic. He bullied Toranosuke to the point where a Weight Woe developed, helped get Shiho fired, and uses his top status in school to get away with many shady acts.
  • In Spite of a Nail: While he no longer has a Palace and is a student instead of a teacher, Kamoshida is still a despicable piece of shit who terrorizes the students of Shujin and is able to sexually harasses female students with impunity due to the principal turning a blind eye to his misdeeds.
  • Jerk Jock: He's a star volleyball player and also a massive asshole.
  • Teens Are Monsters: Certainly the case here. Not only did he get Shiho thrown out of Shujin; he plans to do the same with Ryuji. Chapter 2 implies that he and his goons also have their way with any girl of their choosing, while Sojiro is helpless to stop it.
  • There Can Only Be One: States this trope when talking to Sojiro in the main comic, saying there can't be two top dogs in school.
  • Villain with Good Publicity: He's rather popular with both guys and girls at Shujin, yet is still the despicable person he was in the game.

    Ichiryusai Madarame
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/dcmgzywu0aeahhh.jpeg
Pupil to the well-known Starving Artist Yusuke Kitagawa. He seeks fame and wealth through his art, but while the two butt heads, they still respect each other.
  • Adaptational Nice Guy: Due to the role swap between him and Yusuke, this iteration of Madarame is still an aspiring artist in his youth and thus, though he craves wealth and recognition, he hasn't degraded into the abusive, exploitative plagarist his canon counterpart grew to become in adulthood. Hopefully the guidance of his teacher Yusuke will keep him from going down this path.
  • Iconic Item: He carries the keys associated with Yusuke in the original story, albeit around his neck instead of at his hip.
  • Mr. Vice Guy: Like his canon self, he wants to use his art to seek fame and fortune, though he still cares for his master and worries about his well-being and his lack of a bed.

    Yusuke Kitagawa
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/eigq7utx4amez8n.png
A famous street artist, who, in his own words, believes that "there is beauty in struggle and giving to those less fortunate". As such, he doesn't have much money.

    Haru Okumura
CEO of Okumura Foods. She's often on the look out for good places to have coffee.
  • Corrupt Corporate Executive: Played with. During the events of the story, Haru ends up wrapped in a scandal and accused of embezzling company funds. She has neither confirmed nor denied these claims, but it can be inferred from her son's eagerness to clear her name that these allegations are false.
  • Doting Parent: Is always willing to show affection to her son Kunikazu with a cheek pinch, much to his chagrin.
  • Honest Corporate Executive: She does her best to keep Okumura Foods as a fair company for her employees, despite execs forcing detrimental budget cuts.

    Kunikazu Okumura
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/dvei5ewuuaa8twh.jpeg
Adopted heir of Haru Okumura's Okumura Food.
  • Classy Cravat: Wears a cravat as befitting of his status.
  • Happily Adopted: Was an orphan who was brought in by Haru. Unfortunately, people still talk behind their backs that he not really her son.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: Though he clearly looks down on the protagonists and their cafe, given the unflattering rumours surrounding his mother, he has every right to be angry when he walks into Leblanc and overhears them seemingly speaking ill of her.
  • Noble Bigot: While he cares for and is highly protective of his mother, he looks down on the lower classes like his canon counterpart.
  • Unrelated in the Adaptation: In canon he was Haru’s father. While the reverse is true here, he was adopted by her rather than being her biological son.

    Ann Takamaki
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/dkehriqvsaizvax.jpeg
A well known actress who's in a secret relationship with Shiho Suzui, former volleyball coach and personal trainer and stunt double for the actors Ann works with.

    Kayo Murakami

Ichiko's best friend and fellow investigator for the Newspaper Club. She's investigating a paper trail concerning missing girls in their school, but is troubled due to her being sexually harassed by Murada.

  • Driven to Suicide: Much like Shiho in the canon universe, Kayo eventually turns up for the worse.
  • Sextra Credit: Though not by her own choice. Murada talks about "sessions" between them that will put her in a good favor for a study abroad program, and which have been going on since at least summer break of her second year. She does not seem to be comfortable with the ordeal at all.
