Main Characters

     Newman
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/newman_newman.png

The title character of the comic, a gnome who works within the CRD.

  • An Arm and a Leg: He loses a leg during one mission while saving his friends. Though luckily his werewolf form triggered from the mortal blow and regenerated his limb.
  • Back from the Dead: After helping to vaporize Cthulhu, he gets taken to Drow limbo where the goddess of the Drow race hold him in limbo until Gwen can come to fetch him.
  • Battle Couple: Ultimately becomes this with Gwen over the series.
  • Blood Knight: Dude love a good fight and it's one aspect of his job at the CRD he enjoys.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Goes back and forth with Gwen on this, even during combat.
  • Dragged into Drag: Constantly finds himself put in feminine outfits by Gwen. The bonus strips are likewise centered around him
  • Endearingly Dorky: When he's not fighting or hanging with Gwen, he can usually be seen playing D&D with his friends. He completely nerds out when Kathryn makes a real life RPG for him cosplaying as mostly female characters. It's generally one of the reasons why Gwen becomes attracted to him in the first place.
  • Forgotten First Meeting: He had actually met Gwen long before they worked together at the CRD as they both went to the same high school together, with him helping to deal with a harasser of hers. He doesn't remember because the meeting was so brief and he was dating an orc at that time.
  • Happiness in Slavery: Slightly touch upon, while he is technically Gwen's "slave" and does some of her bidding, she never treats him harshly and make it clear its a mutual relationship. For the most part, he goes along with some of it just out of respect to her.
  • Happily Married: Ties the knot with Gwen in the fourth season.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: Upon hearing about the prophecy of Gwen dying to destroy Cthulhu due to the power within her being too much to contain. He allows himself to be uses as a conduit or a "wand" in order to take the magic into himself and direct it at Cthulhu to save her. Dying in her place.
  • Locked into Strangeness: At the end of the season five, he gets white hair due to having to channel Lily's power through others in order to defeat Cthulhu for good..
  • Our Werewolves Are Different: He got bitten by a werewolf early in the series and changes into a cute but very ferocious puppy like wolf. Lilian has given him a serum to help suppress the transformations but it can still be triggered if he takes a mortal blow such when fighting one of Cthulhu's monsters during one mission. Later during the Vampire arc. He suddenly evolves into a bi-pedal and very muscular form that apparently is a lot more in control of himself.
  • Pintsized Powerhouse: Even through he's a gnome, guy is a tough fighter, even managing to down a Cthulhu monster (granted he was under Gwen's spell at the time but still).
  • Why Did It Have to Be Snakes?: Deathly afraid of, of all things, clowns due to a traumatic experience as a kid. When forced to confront a killer wearing a clown mask. He tries his best to avoid a confrontation with it altogether and ultimately freezes up when he does. It's only when Darian pulls off the mask revealing it was just a troll with strong regenerating abilities, that he takes it down in seconds. Likewise, this is one of the few costumes he won't let Gwen dress him in.
  • You Are Worth Hell: He's a bit off put by Gwen's traditions when it comes to the males in their race. But ultimately comes to the conclusion it's worth it to be with her.

     Gwen
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/newman_gwen.png

The secondary protagonist of the series and a Drow elf. At the start of the series, she's made a partner to Newman. While initially neither get along with each other, they slowly start becoming close.

  • Action Girl: Oh heck yes, she can throw down just as well as Newman.
  • Battle Couple: Slowly becomes one with Newman over the course of the series.
  • Brought Down to Normal: After Cthulhu is vaporized, she finds she can't use her magic anymore.
  • The Chosen One: Lilian reveals she was given goddess like power and is destined to kill Cthulhu should he arise. The downside however is that it will kill her in the process as her body won't be able to handle it.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: She's a dark elf but is pretty friendly for the most part.
  • Forgot About His Powers: During the Arctic mission while trudging through a snowstorm just completely forgets she knows fire spells until Newman offhandedly wonders why she doesn't know any.
  • Gamer Chick: She loves her video games and seen twice playing online ones when the story focuses on Newman. Even after having a child, it doesn't stop her from playing them in her off hours. Lily actually tries to re-frame from playing games with her as Gwen tends to get pretty competitive when doing so.
  • Happily Married: To Newman in the fourth season.
  • Imperiled in Pregnancy: Ends up attacked by a baby eating monster while pregnant and incapacitated due to a venom impairing her senses. It's only thanks to the power within the baby that ends up saving both of them.
  • Male Gaze: There are a lot of shots of Gwen's feet in the series, be it barefoot or socked.
  • Mystical Pregnancy: Revealed that the reason she couldn't use her powers was because they went in the fetus. Said powers saves both of them against a monster trying to eat the fetus and when delivering, they had to use wielders masks in other to see due to the bright light emitting from Gwen's vagina.
  • Perky Goth: Wears a lot of punk clothing but isn't moody in the slightest.
  • Power Incontinence: She can wield magic but isn't good at controlling some of the more stronger spells and can risk nuking a whole city if she's not careful.
  • Royal Blood: Is revealed to be one of the princesses of the Underdark.
  • Troll: She loves messing with Newman for kicks, he's annoyed by it at first but it becomes affectionate later on.
  • Vitriolic Best Buds: With Kathryn, the two rarely get along and bicker constantly. Though it eases up a bit later in the series.

     Kathryn
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/newman_kathryn.png

A rival of Gwen's since high school, she's likewise a Drow elf and one of the top magicians of the Underdark. She has since become the wife of Darian and thus Gwen's sister-in-law.

  • Abusive Parents: Had a very abusive mother during most of her childhood. Luckily and unbeknownst to her, Lilian had a "pep talk" with her mother and she started treating Kathryn far more nicely.
  • Action Girl: Not to the same extent as Gwen since most of the time, she needs to be prodded to do something. But she's more then capable of laying out the hurt.
  • Appeal to Flattery: Has a very massive ego and one of the ways to usually get her to cooperate is flattery. Gwen had to pretty much do this one mission when Newman and she found themselves ill equipped against a group of Cthulhu monsters and Kathryn being the only one knowledgeable enough to help them.
  • Alpha Bitch: Was definitely one during high school. Heck one of the reason she targeted Darrian was just to spite Gwen.
  • Berserk Button: Hurting Darian. One evil witch targeted him during a fight and Kathryn made her regret it instantly with a blade through the gut.
  • Character Development: She starts out very unlikable, but over the course of the series, does start opening up more.
  • Cute Witch: Wears the usual witches ensemble when having to go to work.
  • Hidden Depths: She may be a jerk, but she knows plenty when it comes to Cthulhu and his powers.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: She can be rather callous and rude, but she does have a soft spot within in her as shown that she genuinely loves Darian after he have given her a necklace he made himself.
  • Out of Focus: Darian and she don't show up much in season 4 with the focus mostly on Newman's family.
  • Vitriolic Best Buds: With Gwen, the two rarely get along and bicker constantly. Though it eases up a bit later in the series.

     Darian
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/newman_darian.png

Gwen's timid little brother and Kathryn's husband.

  • Big Damn Heroes: He saves the group from a bunch of cultists that tried to drug them using his new combat skills Kathryn taught him.
  • Everyone Has Standards: He's a faithful slave but even he has his limits such as in the final arc where he's been driving for awhile following after Lily and her friends and trying to cater to Kathryn. Naturally he becomes a bit irritable when he tries to rest but keeps getting interrupted.
  • Extreme Doormat: He's pretty much whipped when it comes to Kathryn, so much so that he has a hard time interacting with people when not waiting on her.
  • Happiness in Slavery: Unlike Newman, he's very devoted to being Kathryn's slave, waiting on her hand and foot. Though it's mentioned he was an only son in a family of girls who treated him likewise, so he was fairly conditioned to it. That said, Kathryn is genuinely in love with him.
  • The Load: Initially, he was more or less just Kathryn's pack mule and doesn't contribute much from there. Though later Kathryn starts training him so he can defend both her and himself when needed.
  • Mundane Solution:
    • When the group is fighting some Cthulhu monsters and are getting overwhelmed, he simply calls in Lilian to come aid them.
    • Later when the group faces off against a being with a clown mask that none of their attacks can damage and has Newman frozen in fear due to his fear of clowns. He simply pulls the mask off the killer, revealing it just to be a disfigured troll. This allows Newman to regain his focus and instantly kill it with ease.
  • Out of Focus: Kathryn and he don't show up much in season 4, with the focus on Newman's family.
  • Royal Blood: A prince of the Underdark.
  • Took a Level in Badass: A later arc showed him being able to fight hand to hand. This was due to Kathryn wanting him to start defending himself during missions. Comes in quite handy later.

Family, Friends & Allies

     Chet
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/newman_chet.png

Newman's co-worker and friend within the CRD, a regular elf.

  • A Day in the Spotlight: The Cursed Apartment arc focuses on him, as well as the Vampire Party arc.
  • The Ace: Said to be an expert in curses and wards against them.
  • Babies Ever After: When we first see him in season 5, Ashley and he have just their own newborn.
  • The Casanova: A ladies man who enjoys the single life, though recently Ashley and him have been hitting it off.
  • Happily Married: To Ashley, offscreen, in Season 5.
  • Nice Guy: A pretty upright guy overall, even helping Darian ease into a D&D session Newman brought him. He even gets along with Kyle during the Vampire Party arc and stands up to Versile for him, later inviting him to a D&D session and telling Newman to cool it with the antagonism despite their history.
  • Official Couple: With Ashley in Season 4 after the Cursed Apartment arc.
  • True Companions: He's a very good friend to Newman, offering advice to him when dating Gwen and even serving as his best man at Newman's wedding.

     Mary and Bruce
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/newman_newmans_parents.png

Newman's Parents

  • Amazingly Embarrassing Parents: During a get together, Mary naturally breaks out the baby photos of Newman much to his chagrin.
  • Irony: Mary reveals to Lilian that she dated a Drow elf herself back in the past, but broke up with him due to the fact she wanted to be active in the relationship rather than be waited on hand and foot.
  • It Runs in the Family: Turns out Bruce is a pretty capable fighter in his own right. He manged to figure out a shapeshifting monster made it's way into the household easily just due to the fact that when it impersonated Mary, it's eyes didn't look right. And quickly dispatches it with an ax to the head and by setting it on fire. The latter being noted it where Newman got his love of burning things from.
  • Walking Shirtless Scene: Both Julian and he shed their shirts when they get into a wood-chopping match.

     Queen Lilian
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/newman_lilian.png

Queen of the Underdark and mother of Gwen, Darin and Ashley.

  • Action Mom: Being the queen of a the Underdark, she'd have to be.
  • Berserk Button: Try to mind control her? Better make sure you have a good grasp on that leash. Because once she gets free, the whole vicinity is about to become a crater. Nierous ended up learning this the hard way, and this was after Julian beat him to a pulp.
  • A Day in the Spotlight: The second Christmas story of the series focuses on her.
  • The Grinch: Doesn't care at all for Christmas and in a dour mood whenever it comes around. Though she has a good reason, she lost one of her friends during the holidays when said friend was trying to show her Christmas joy. She changes her tune when, after going though Yet Another Christmas Carol, her friend sends her a letter from beyond the grave imploring her to let go of the past and enjoy spending time with her family.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Very aloof and snobby on the outset, but she does care deep down and, despite belittling and subtly threatening Newman when they first meet, her husband mentions that that was just her way of showing that she liked him.
  • One-Winged Angel: If she really gets angry, she becomes a walking mass of fire.
  • Royals Who Actually Do Something: She's very fiercely protective of her kingdom and will fight for it if threaten.
  • Mama Bear: Will come to the aid of her kids in a heartbeat.

     Julian
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/newman_gwens_father.png

Gwen's father and Lilian's husband and pretty much King of Drow Race though Lilian is the one that handles affairs of the kingdom.

  • Berserk Button: Do not look like your playing hanky panky with his wife. Even if your a God, it won't save you.
  • Happiness in Slavery: As per custom of the Drow race, though the marriage seems to be a more mutual one.
  • Nice Guy: Very friendly and took a shine to Newman instantly. More then happy to have him in the family.
  • Walking Shirtless Scene: Introduced as such when Newman meets Gwen's parents. He likewise sheds his shirt when getting into a chopping competition with Bruce.

     Griff
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/newman_griff.png

An dwarf that accompanies Gwen and Newman on an arctic mission.

  • Badass in Distress: The Yangi manage to capture him and drag him back to their lair, necessitating a rescue.
  • The Bus Came Back: After his inital arc, he wasn't seen in a long while until season five when Newman comes to him looking for help.
  • Dual Wielding: Wields two axes.
  • The Lost Lenore: He lost his wife to a creature called an Yangi (which are basically yetis) and once it's clear the creature is the one the three are chasing, it doesn't take much to want revenge. However this ends up being subverted. His wife was never killed, just captured along with other dwarves to mine for a frozen Cthulhu creature. He's more than happy to be reunited with her when all is said and done.

     Ashley
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/newman_ashley_0.png

Gwen and Darian's older sister.

  • Babies Ever After: First we see them again in season 5, Chet and she have just had their own newborn. Ironically this was after claiming she wasn't considering having kids after hearing Gwen giving birth.
  • Big Damn Heroes: During the Cursed Apartment arc, she arrives to save Chet from the ghost that was on the verge of killing him.
  • Competition Freak: She's fiercely competitive which is something Chet and she share.
  • Happily Married: To Chet, offscreen, in Season 5.
  • Official Couple: With Chet in Season 4 after the Cursed Apartment arc.
  • Royal Blood: A princess of the Underdark.
  • Tomboy: Gives off this distinction, especially around Chet.

     Vasile
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/newman_vasile.jpg

Leader of The Society, vampires that have taken on Victorian wear and mannerisms.

  • Awful Wedded Life: Apparently his wife, Clarice, and he aren't in the best of marriages.
  • Frozen Fashion Sense: While he claims that he likes anyone that goes outside the norm in his society, he loves proper Victorian fashion and promptly welcomed Gwen and Newman in because of their clothing.
  • The Leader: Oh his half of the vampire side.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: He takes a liking to Gwen and Newman despite the two not being vampires, and is even friends with Lilian.

     Lilly
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/newman_lilly_5.jpg
Newman and Gwen's daughter.

  • Action Girl: Wants to be one, but obviously doesn't have the skills yet. Though later manages to find out she can at the least fire weak magic blasts.
  • Attention Deficit... Ooh, Shiny!: Does this in a dream she has when a person is trying to tell her how to use her powers, despite the fact there's nothing to stare at other then a white void.
  • Babies Ever After: Born in the 4th season of the series.
  • Brains and Brawn: When deciding to make her little junior detective club, she assigns herself as the brawn between Dillon and her.
  • Genki Girl: Very hyperactive as most kids her age usually are.
  • Leeroy Jenkins: Her usual strategy is just run up and smack things. Again, she is a kid though.
  • Soap Opera Rapid Aging Syndrome: Not long after she's born, the series skips seven years into the future where she's now a seven year old kid.

     Dillon
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/newman_dillon.jpg
Kathryn and Darian's son.

     Chompers
A dog Lilly gets on her seventh birthday.
  • One-Winged Angel: It's revealed later that he can take on a much more massive form in order to protect Lilly and her friends. Lilly's more then overjoyed when she finds out.
  • Team Pet: To Lilly

     Greg
A dwarf and the first "client" of Lily's junior detective club who hires the two to investigate a strange creature that appears in his room at night. Eventually becoming friends with the two,
  • The Big Guy: Among Lily's group and friends, he pretty much this.
  • Bystander Syndrome: Basically, he has no powers or skill. He's just a normal kid.

     Flint
A demon that appeared out of a portal in Greg's room and becomes associated with the group.
  • Arranged Marriage: Turns out he's the son of the main head of Hell. When Lilly points him out to be his "boyfriend" (again, seven year old here), his father approves of it after seeing Newman and Gwen practically run roughshod over his forces claiming "that their union well rend the Earth asunder".
  • Big Red Devil: Well a red devil. Being a demon, it's kind of a given.
  • The Stoic: He's not quite familiar with Earth's customs and just takes everything in stride. Even being stuck in another world hardly phases him.

     Jess
A fellow classmate, possibly an elf.

Antagonists

     Kyle
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/newman_kyle_vert.jpg

A vampire that tried to kidnap and feed on Gwen.

  • Big Bad Wannabe: Tries to be taken seriously as a vampire. But Gwen doesn't fall for his hypnotic gaze and he's easily beaten up.
  • Butt-Monkey: Guy can't seem to catch a break when he shows up.
  • Classical Movie Vampire: Wears the suit and cape ensemble. Among the Society, it really makes him stick out.
  • Dumb Muscle: Being hulked up from Razvan's experiments didn't help his smarts any and Newman manages to defeat him by getting him to smash the ground around him till he drops through a hole.
  • Hulking Out: Razvan captures him and uses his machines to make Kyle into a hulking beast which he sics on Newman.
  • Not What It Looks Like: After trying to hypnotize Gwen and getting laughed at. She makes it look like he's trying to hold her hostage when Newman shows up. He tries to claim it's staged, but it doesn't stop him from getting his head cut off.
  • Off with His Head!: His first encounter with Newman and Gwen ended up with him losing his. Luckily it didn't kill him.
  • Starter Villain: One of the first threats faced in the series. Though dealt with very easily.
  • The Bus Came Back: Past his introduction in the first season, he isn't seen for a long while until the vampire arc in the fourth season.
  • The Unfavorite: In The Society according to Vasile.

     Torian
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/newman_torian.png

Leader of a cult sect of Cthulhu. He also revealed to be Lilian's brother and thus Gwen, Darian and Ashley's uncle.

  • Back from the Dead: Subverted, he's still dead but ended up becoming one of the Devil's flunkies to open a portal to Hell in the Underdark. Then played straight as he made a break for it while the portal was still open and is seeking revenge against his family for his defeat. Since he now has powers from his time in Hell, that's not a good thing. Subverted later, it was Chuthulu who hitched a ride to the mortal world in his body.
  • The Beastmaster: He the one controlling the Great One. When Gwen tells him to stop his control over it. He willingly does so and let's the thing run amuck.
  • Evil Uncle: Toward Gwen when they encounter each other. He clearly has no feelings for family as he intended to sacrifice her along with Newman to The Great One.
  • Good Scars, Evil Scars: He has a few scars on his face.
  • Sinister Scythe: In the final bout against Newman and Gwen he wields an ax with a scythe blade on the other end of it.
  • You Have Failed Me: After he's defeated and imprisoned. He's killed in his cell by one of the Old Ones.

     The Five Stars of Cthulhu
A variety of monsters that are the main threat in the first two seasons of the series, worshiped and often summon by a sect of cults. Over the course of the story, the protagonists have come across a variety of them culminating with a battle against Cthulhu himself.

The Old Ones

A series of squid like beings that seem to be part of Cthulhu himself.

  • Mind Rape: Their bread and butter on people who aren't allied with them. Newman nearly succumbed to one of them and was only snapped out of it by Gwen's magic (albeit unintentional) and the next encounter had them taking all four of the protagonist down with a spell before they knew what was going on.
  • More Teeth than the Osmond Family: When they really go all out, they open their mouth to reveal rows of teeth.
  • No-Sell: They turn out to be tough as heck and easily swatted aside physical and magical attacks. Heck in the second encounter, Darian had to call in Lilian to come help with them when Newman, Gwen and Kathryn are nearly subdued.
  • Suddenly Voiced: In the the first encounter with one of them, it doesn't say anything. The second time, they're suddenly more vocal. Newman even lampshades it.
  • Villain: Exit, Stage Left: The one Gwen, Newman and Kathryn fight in the Arctic beats a retreat when Yisha is broken free from his ice, probably thinking Yisha will finish the job for it.

Goran

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/newman_goran.png

A monster that was summoned by cultists near a lakeside and attacked any boat that had their symbol on it.

  • Starter Villain: The first of the Chuthlu monsters and was easily defeated by Newman without the need for spells or runes.
  • Off with His Head!: Newman slices it's head off in their fight right in front of the cultist that summoned it.

Mortoth

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/newman_mortoth.png

Dubbed "The Great One" by it's followers. It's a goo like being that Torrian was storing for his attack on the Underdark.

  • Blob Monster: It a huge black form of goo that Torian had been storing in his base for his eventual attack.
  • Extra Eyes: Has at least three of them goes down either side of it's face.

Yisha

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/newman_yisha.png

A monster was frozen in the Arctic and was being mined for by mind-controlled dwarves that the Yangi kidnapped.

  • Eye Scream: How it's killed, Newman and Gwen drop some harpoons on it's eye and Kathryn finishes it off by dropping a chuck of ice on it.
  • Kill It with Fire: What the Dwarves do to it after it's killed at the behest of Newman to ensure it won't revive.
  • Non-Action Big Bad: Of the Arctic arc, if only because it was frozen and the heroes take it down before it can revive.

Hargoth

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/newman_hargoth.png

A monster that a cult summons out in a desert town.

  • An Arm and a Leg: Werewolf Newman pays it back for his lost leg by cutting all its legs off. Unfortunately, it molts from its old body like a butterfly, sprouting wings and taking to the air.
  • Hero Killer: Very, very narrowly does this to Newman when his leg was cut up saving his friends from one of it's attacks. Luckily his werewolf transformation allowed him to revive.
  • Knight of Cerebus: The first few Old Ones were at least cakewalks that, while requiring some effort, never got too dire for the heroes. Hargoth however was the first fully serious threat to the bunch, not only being immune to Kathryn's powers and nearly killing Newman but likewise needing Gwen to tap into an dormant Goddess power in her just stop the thing as it within inches of blowing up a city.
  • No-Sell: Newman's regular attacks and Kathryn's magic are useless against it. Even when Newman cuts it legs off, it just goes into a stronger form and Gwen had to tap into her goddess power to put it down.
  • Wave-Motion Gun: Can fire out a huge blast from it's mouth.

     Cthulhu
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/newman_chuthlu.png

Exactly What It Says on the Tin. Well he doesn't make a physical appearance until late into the comic, his influence is the cause of many threats in the series.

  • Affably Evil: In a sense. Everything he does and says seems to have an air of detachment but his attempts to convince the cast to stand down and accept the peace of rest seem genuine, he allows himself to bleed to make Newman feel better about the impossibility of the fight, and seems at least distantly concerned about ending their suffering swiftly.
  • Attack of the 50-Foot Whatever: When he returns, he's much bigger and muscular then before. Ironically how he was initially portrayed when it was reported he would first showed up.
  • Big Bad: The main honcho of the Cthulhu monsters and the main villain of the second season. As well as the final arc of the series.
  • Greater-Scope Villain: Pretty much the cause of a lot of the major encounters in the first two seasons of series. As it turns out, when his monsters are summoned and killed. It allows him to regain his power, ultimately finally forming on his own.
  • Lean and Mean: The story plays with the fact that he's this big and muscular looking creature. But it just turns out it was a weather report on his coming and what people thinks he looks like. When the heroes actually confront him, he has a very slim looking figure.
  • No-Sell: The heroes hit him with a variety of attacks on their initial encounter but nothing seems to scratch him. It isn't until Gwen taps into the goddess power that she manages to get hits off. Even then, it barely phases him before she has to go all out.
  • Not Quite Dead: He returns somehow inhibiting Torien's body. Lily manages to vaporize the body but his spirit is still on the loose.
  • Real After All: He's regarded as a myth in the series' setting. But turns out to be very real.
  • Sealed Evil in a Can: Its takes the combined powers of everyone to finally stop him and seal him away in a stature followed by being dropped into a hole.

     Evil Witch
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/newman_evil_witch.jpg

A witch that killed some drunken teens when they defiled her graveyard.

  • Evil Smells Bad: Kathryn cites this as the reason witches like her give them a bad name.
  • Facial Horror: Half of her face ends up getting skinned by Kathryn during the fight.
  • Impaled with Extreme Prejudice: Remember that witch that nearly killed Darian? Yeah, this was her and Kathryn made her pay for it dearly.
  • No Name Given: Just some undead witch, she's never named.
  • Orifice Evacuation: Once Newman and Gwen find her, she opens her mouth and let's bugs crawl out of it.
  • Poisonous Person: Newman ended up getting scratched in the battle with her, causing him to hallucinate and violently throw up several times.

     Apartment Spirit
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/newman_apartment_spirit_2_vert.jpg
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/newman_apartment_spirit_combined_vert.jpg

A malicious spirit of an apartment Chet moves next to.

  • Abusive Parents: The girl who's hatred the spirit manifests from was killed by her parents who were cultists and tried to sacrifice her for power. What's worse is that 1) the poor girl never even knew of this until they jumped her, drugged her and quickly hung her before even knowing what was going on and 2) the spirit states they didn't even do the spell properly and were likely the first victims.
  • Alas, Poor Villain: Once Chet finds out what was the cause of the spirit's creation and sees the remains of the woman. He states he does feel sorry for her but knows that the spirit isn't her, just her hatred given form.
  • An Arm and a Leg: Ashley practically dismembers the thing, (including ripping off it's head) but it's doesn't stop it as it starts to pull itself together.
  • Jump Scare: Pulls a number of these through it's arc though Chet and Newman don't seem to notice. Likely this was for the reader..
  • Nigh-Invulnerability: Chet tries to use wards against it's but not enough to stop it. Likewise directly confronting the spirit barely does anything. It's only stopped through The Power of Love between Chet and Ashley.
  • Shout-Out: Of Kayako from Ju-on / The Grudge. An entity that haunts and kills whomever enters it's domain.

     Jesse Jacobs
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/newman_jesse_jacobs_vert.jpg
Click here to see him unmasked

A man in a clown mask that seem neigh-invincible.

  • Gonk: Turns out to be a very ugly looking troll under his mask.
  • Monster Clown: Subverted, it's just a mask he wears. He's in no way a clown.
  • Nigh-Invulnerability: Gwen, Kathryn and Darian hit him with a number of attacks but nothing seems to hurt him. When Newman finally gets over his fear of clowns once Darian pulls the mask off and easily kills him. He reveals that the troll just had high regeneration and magic immunity on him and that they had to burn his body to finally stop him.
  • Shout-Out: To movie slashers like Jason and Micheal Myers.

     Sven
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/newman_sven.jpg

Leader of the "Nightwalkers", a vampire society that prefer leather and raves.

  • Curb-Stomp Battle: In the second encounter, Newman doesn't even let him do anything before pounding him flat with him hammer. He ends up a mangled mess by the time Newman stops and knocks him into a D.E.C paddy wagon.
  • Girl Posse: Introduced with two girl vampires by his side.
  • Hellbent For Leather: His fraction of the vampire society is known for it.

  • The Leader: Of the "Nightwalker" society of vampires.
  • The Tooth Hurts: When he found out Gwen and Newman weren't there for D.E.C business, he attacked them and ended up with his fangs cut off by Gwen. When he reappears for a rematch, he has some gold implant replacements.

  • Mind over Matter: A secondary power he reveals when floating rocks around him to attack the protagonists.
  • Looks Like Orlok: Due to being one of the older vampires still living, he has most of these features.
  • Monster Progenitor: The cause of the feral vampires.
  • Shock and Awe: Wields lighting when having to actually fight himself.

     Redneck Family
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/newman_hillbilly_clan.jpg
A trio of dwarves Newman and Gwen run into while on a mission to help a bigfoot.
  • The Cameo: They show up in the "Newman Goes to Hell" arc tied to a wall with the father cursing the pair for sending them down there.
  • Cannibal Clan: Naturally they're cannibals and eat anyone unfortunate to cross paths with them.
  • Dragged Off to Hell: Newman goads the masked one into trying to come after him across a cursed door that the redneck knows is haunted of the victims he killed and wants to avoid. The man tries to charge Newman anyway and promptly gets grabbed and dragged into the unknown.
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones: Despite being murderers, they are a family. With both the masked one and the father trying to avenge their fallen members.
  • Hillbilly Horrors: A parody of the concept. However since Gwen and Newman are seasoned fighters, that doesn't mean much.
  • I'm a Humanitarian: As stated, they have no problem with trying to eat people.
  • Nigh-Invulnerability: The masked one is the muscle of the bunch, able to shrug off an axe strike to the head.
  • No Name Given: The father and one of the normal looking son aren't named. The masked one was at least mentioned to be Jebediah.
  • The Family That Slays Together: Again, a family of murderers.
  • Underestimating Badassery: Poor fools didn't even stand a chance. One gets an axe to the head by Newman, another is dragged off to presumably Hell, and the last, their father, is killed offscreen by Gwen.

     Nierous
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/newman_nierous.jpg
Click here to see his true form

A god of the sea who ends up hypnotizing the females of the male leads, prompting a rescue.

  • Bodyguard Babes: What the girls he hypnotizes become toward him. Considering he has Lilian in those ranks, that proves to be a problem for the male protagonists.
  • Casanova Wannabe: Made worse by the fact he forces women into loving him.
  • Fate Worse than Death: Lilian all but eviscerates him once she breaks from his control. When he wakes up in limbo, he now finds himself at the mercy of Cybil. When we see him later, he's pretty much become Cybil's "dog", given a leash, gagged and forced to walk on all fours. Though seemingly subverted, he doesn't seem to mind being her slave and even acts cordial to Lilly when she waved him goodbye.
  • Gone Horribly Right: While he manages to hypnotize the protagonists female spouses as his harem. He kinda forgot dark elves are into some very kinky stuff. So when the male leads come back for a rematch, they find him tied down and about about to be spank to which he actually pleads for help.
  • Glamour: He looks like a handsome looking man but it really conceal his true form of looking like a chubby humanoid fish.
  • Happiness in Slavery: Apparently so, despite becoming Cybil's slave, he... doesn't seem to object much to it.
  • Harem Seeker: Once he senses that there are many females on a nearby island of his. He mesmerizes Gwen, Mary, Kathryn, Ashley and even Lilian to become his.
  • No-Holds-Barred Beatdown: Julian beats the living daylights out of him once his control over the women is broken. Moreover due to seeing his wife about to paddle him, despite the fact that he's clearly not enjoying it. And then Lilian regains her senses and... well. Let's just say his island wasn't there anymore once she was done with him.

     Craddle Bug
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/newman_craddle_bug.jpg
A monster the preys on babies and fetuses. Targeting Gwen when she was pregnant with Lilly.
  • Eldritch Abomination: Looks more like a thing from Aliens then anything.
  • Eats Babies: Again it's a creature that babies.
  • No Body Left Behind: The power of Lily's unborn form blasts the thing the smithereens, leaving nothing of it behind.
  • Poisonous Person: It attacks Gwen with it's stinger which impairs her movement, making her vunerable so it can move in and get at her fetus.

Others

     Robby
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/newman_robby_aka_durge.png

A drow elf that likes to go under the name "Durge". His family were apparently rivals to Gwen's and as such, he constantly keeps trying to "attack" her. Thing of it is however he doesn't have the power to back up it.

  • Arc Villain: He gets some prominence as the main threat in the "Vampire Party" arc, crashing it to fight Gwen.
  • Back for the Finale: He show up one more time in the final comic of season five trying to start a fight as usual. Newman promptly tells him to stuff it and join them for a bar-b-que he's having.
  • Big Bad Wannabe: He wants to be considered a serious threat, but is constantly chased off quickly and easily whenever things get too physical.
  • Chased by Angry Natives: Or rather blood crazed ones. Chet manages to scratch him and draw blood. The scent of which attracts the vampires to him, forcing him and his cronies to run as the vampires fly after them.
  • Large Ham: Talks in a huge grandiose speech, but it's just to hype himself up with no one really taking him seriously.
  • Power Floats: He and his lackeys can levitate, that's the most magic they've displayed so far.
  • Put on a Bus: He wasn't seen since season 1 with his only other appearance being in a flashback to Gwen's high school days.
    • The Bus Came Back: He and his crew finally show up again in season 4, interrupting a double date between Gwen, Newman, Chet and Ashley.
  • Villain Team-Up: Not exactly by his choice, Torian summons him and his flunkies and offers them power to fight against Newman and Gwen. When they question if they refused, Torian uses his powers to threaten them which forces him to comply.

     Heather
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/newman_heather.png

Lilian's friend back in the past.

  • Ascend to a Higher Plane of Existence: Naturally she went to Heaven upon death. Not only that, but she became the spirit of Christmas Cheer.
  • Dead Man Writing: Sends Lilian a letter from beyond the grave, imploring her to stop moping about what happened in the past and enjoy her time with her family during the holidays.
  • Impaled with Extreme Prejudice: A hobo she was trying to help ended up stabbing her.
  • Nice Girl: Was a very nice woman who just wanted everyone to enjoy the holidays. Sadly it ended up backfiring when trying to help a hobo.
  • Posthumous Character: Long dead before the present time of the story.

     Cedric, Cindy and Mark
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/newman_conspiracy_researchers.png

A trio of conspiracy theorists that follow anything Cthulhu related.

  • Exposition Fairy: Provide information on the previous monsters fought and what their role is in Cthulhu's plan.
  • Insistent Terminology: They're conspiracy researchers.
  • Small Role, Big Impact: The main protagonists only come across them by chance thinking their hideout was one of the cultists. Not only do the three help them, they inform them of Cthulhu's true goal and point them in the direction of where the real cultists will meet. Allowing the four to inform Lilian and prepare for a final showdown with Cthulhu.

     Cybil
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/newman_cybil.png

A Goddess of the Afterlife

  • Berserk Button: In Dark Elf culture, you either treat your slave well or you deal with her personally.
  • Horned Humanoid: Has horns on her head.
  • One-Winged Angel: When going to talk with Lily to comfort her that her parents are still alive after they were seemingly lost in an explosion. Lily states she pictured Cybil to be more intimidating. Cybil complies by turning into a spider-like being.
  • Pass the Popcorn: Eats popcorn as she watches Lilian going to town on Nierous and destroying the island they're on in the process.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: Knows that Newman pulled a Heroic Sacrifice to save Gwen and as such just held him in Limbo until Gwen could come retrieve him.
  • Shipper on Deck: Fully support Newman and Gwen's relations, even leaving a "present" of punishment items and a note telling Gwen to put it to good use.
  • The Bus Came Back: Past her role in season 2, she wasn't seen again till season 4 when the male leads end up summoning her completely unintentionally. She shows up more after that.
  • Spider People: Her true form resembles a massive spider.
  • Troll: Not literally, but an agreement that she would let Newman go was if she beat him in a board game. It takes a few tries but she eventually does, though it turns out she let Newman win a few times as she liked seeing Gwen spank him.

     Meredith
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/newman_merideth.png

A queen of a neighboring kingdom (possibly regular elves).

  • Reasonable Authority Figure: When it looked like Lilian was going to go into an argument with her, Gwen pleaded for her help in reviving Newman, even getting on her knees. Meredith was more then happy to since Gwen asked nicely.
  • The Rival: Apparently one to Lilian.
  • Spit Take: Does one when Lilian reveals Gwen and she have come to ask for a favor. Something she never expected from Lilian.
  • The Bus Came Back: After having not been seen since season two, she returns in the climax of season five to help against Cthulhu. Lilian and her still being snippy against each other.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Chides Lilian for her rough approach in asking for a favor.

     Flash Anderson
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/newman_flash_anderson.jpg

Host of a paranormal hunting reality show.

  • Demonic Possession: Implied to be what happened to him in the end after he was (seemingly) killed.
  • He-Man Woman Hater: Gwen comes to check up on him and his cameraman at one point. He responds they "don't need any help from some...girl!". Gwen just shrugs and heads off, nonchalantly telling her there's a ghost behind him...which there was.
  • Nice Character, Mean Actor: On camera, he seems like a decent enough person, even at one point apparently grieving for the fallen in the asylum they were filming at. But when not in character, he's a utter jerkward who's only in it for the fame and ratings. In fact, he revealed he actually knew the place was haunted from the get go.
  • Too Dumb to Live: Was told several times the place he was hosting in had real danger in it. But he insisted on continuing even despite his cameraman heeding Gwen and Newman warning.
  • Unexplained Recovery: He returns in a later chapter with no mention how he survived being possessed. Especially since it seemed like he had died at the end of his first story arc.

     Santa
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/newman_santa_vert.jpg

The jolly old St. Nick himself.

  • Real After All: Another regarded as a myth in the series. Newman doesn't buy it at first until Santa warps Gwen and him to the North Pole (though Santa does reveal that Gwen was the one that gave him presents the previous year).
  • Santa Claus: Exactly who you think he is.

     Snow Titan
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/newman_snow_titan_vert.jpg

The cause of Santa coming to recruit Newman and Gwen. An odd creature that's taken residence on Santa's workshop.

  • Cute Giant: Gwen certainly thinks so. Newman, not so much
  • Giant Foot of Stomping: Constantly keep doing this to Newman. Luckily it's made of snow, so it doesn't hurt but doesn't make it any less annoying for him.
  • Nigh-Invulnerability: Newman and Gwen tried to pull it from the roof of the workshop with a net. All it does is shred the thing. Though, much to their relief, it quickly reforms itself.
  • The Thing That Would Not Leave: Once it chooses a nesting location, it won't leave until it's good and ready. Santa had gotten Newman and Gwen to move the thing, but then the D.E.C informed them the only way they could move it was to a certified D.E.C location...which Gwen ended up volunteering their house for.

     Megan and Greg
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/newman_megan_and_greg_vert.jpg

Two werewolves that end up getting Newman and Gwen involved in a matter between vampires and werewolves.

  • Exposition Fairy: Megan's the one who tells Newman about the supposed "war" between vampires and werewolves. Greg is the one who reveals the two vampire societies in the series world.
  • Our Werewolves Are Different: Apparently both were born into lycanthropy. Greg is actually surprised Newman was bitten by an original werewolf as most don't live to tell the tale if that happens.
  • Small Role, Big Impact: They only show up at the start and near the end of the arc, but are the ones who pretty much lead to Newman and Gwen to finding out about Razvan's plan and stopping him.

     Bigfoot
A creature the duo meet while out in the woods on one mission.
