The Player

     The Player
The Player Character, whose name, gender, appearance, and personality are player-determined, as is their Housenote . A first year at the beginning of the game, they quickly develop a reputation and become involved in a mystery that directly ties into their family.
  • The Ace: Proves to be a very adept wizard or witch, excelling at spells and potions beyond their level. Year 7 has Jacob mention that they had performed wandless magic as a child, and they pick it back up pretty quickly after barely some research and practice.
    • When it comes to Quidditch, the Player picks it up with little to no knowledge of the sport beforehand and becomes one of their house's best players. Skye Parkin, a fellow prodigy herself, and Rath, their rival and one of the best Beaters at Hogwarts, call them a natural Quidditch player as well.
  • Affectionate Nickname: Jacob calls his sibling "Pip".
  • Ambiguously Bi: By the time of Year 5, you're allowed to confess that you're smitten with a classmate of either gender.
  • Animal Battle Aura: In a timed sidequest, they find out that a Dementor is loose on school grounds, so they seek tutoring from Tonks to learn to cast the Patronus Charm. After a failure early on, they succeed in summoning a big cat, an equine, or a harenote .
  • Animorphism: It takes participating in a timed sidequest, but you have the potential to become an Animagus. Your possible forms are a bird (an eagle), a cat, or a dog.
  • The Atoner: Possibly, if you select options indicating it; they just want to do right by the school and return honour to the family.
  • Badass Bookworm: Excels at both classes and duelling.
  • Big Brother Worship: Implied. While there's not much given as to what kind of relationship the player character had with Jacob, learning what had happened to him and finding his current whereabouts serve as their primary motivation.
    • In later dialogue and some choices, it seems that the Player really did look up to their big brother a lot.
  • Big Man on Campus: Or Girl, depending on their gender. As time drags on, you build up your reputation. By year three, if you play your cards right, you'll sit at the top of a social group that includes some of the most popular boys and girls at Hogwarts (including a prefect), be famous for your exploits standing up to Merula and diving into the Cursed Vaults, and have humbled many of the brightest students in your grade, even beating a few prefects in duels.
  • Bully Hunter: Your initial relationship with Merula is stopping her from picking on other students.
  • Brilliant, but Lazy: Can be played this way.
  • Contrasting Prequel Main Character:
    • Mainly to Harry Potter. Both quickly develop a reputation before even starting at Hogwarts; Harry's is positive and he is praised by many as The Boy Who Lived for being the son of two war heroes, while the Player Character's is negative due to their brother's mysterious expulsion and disappearance. Harry Potter had a strictly Muggle upbringing, while MC had a strictly wizarding upbringing and both were initially entirely ignorant of the other world. Harry is a boy and in almost any official material, if seen at all, MC is a girl.
    • Since the player chooses their actions, they can either be a Humble Hero or a Smug Super like James Potter.
    • The Player also shows similarities to Albus Potter, since their Hogwarts years are greatly affected by their father/brother’s years.
  • Broken Pedestal: Can be played to totally admire and look up to Rakepick, only to have her betray them and kill their best friend.
    • Can be played in this way with Jacob as well, showing doubt and betrayal when Jacob left them again right after being freed.
  • Chick Magnet: Or, depending on their gender, Dude. In the Valentine’s Day event, all the other invitees to Lockhart’s party end up asking the player to be their date. Happens multiple times in several romance quests.
  • Child Prodigy: Jacob says that they performed wandless magic as a child, destroying a vase and tea set, but also laughing a flower to life.
  • Dating Catwoman: If Merula becomes the player character's love interest.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Oh, yes. The Player Character never loses a chance to snark at people, with the most common targets being Rita Skeeter and Merula.
  • Determinator: Whatever else they are like, they are very persistent in solving the mystery surrounding their brother and the Cursed Vaults.
  • Didn't Think This Through: They have a knack for rushing into a situation without conducting adequate preparation. The Christmas 2019 sidequest is a good example as their plan to give the Weasleys a perfect Christmas nearly snows in the entire area when they attempt spell modification beyond their training.
  • Disproportionate Retribution: While it was clear that Rakepick needed to be brought to justice for what she's done, trapping her inside the Sunken Vault forever was pretty ruthless. Rakepick will suffer a Fate Worse than Death where she will be mentally tortured until she does die. Assuming Rakepick is actually able to eventually escape, she will be mentally scarred forever, maybe even driven to insanity and likely never recover. Justice was certainly paid back and then some.
    • Completely subverted if the Player chooses to turn her over to the Ministry.
      • Granted, this being Wizarding Britain, and considering what Rakepick has done (including using an Unforgivable Curse on a student), handing her over to the Ministry will likely simply result in her being sent to Azkaban, where, ironically, she'll suffer almost the exact same fate except at the hand of the Dementors instead of the Sunken Vault.
  • Doom Magnet: A pretty big one, so much so that they almost tried to run away so they could bring the danger away from their friends. Mostly because R wants them for some reason. Even lampshaded by Charlie in a frustrated rant in Year 6.
Charlie: [angrily] Right now? Have we ever been safe with all the danger (Player) brings?
  • Driven to Madness: Seems to be one of their greatest fears, which stems from the fact this might've been the fate that befell their older brother Jacob. In the Sunken Vault, one of their worst memories is Rakepick accusing them of being just as obsessive about the Cursed Vaults as she and 'R' were.
  • Dude, Where's My Respect?:
    • Still gets treated as a dangerous miscreant by most teachers and staff after standing up to Merula, the class bully. Of course, depending on the player's choices, they may have been the one gunning for a fight.
    • Even after being responsible for earning dozens of house points, there will always be an NPC making a smug comment about the house points the player lost early in the game.
    • Even though they had solved every single Cursed Vault and saved the school multiple times, they continue to get into trouble for meddling and are basically thankless heroes. They finally get the respect and thanks they deserve at the end of Year 6.
  • Everyone Has Standards: They might have the option to say very hurtful things, but when Rakepick demonstrates the Cruciatus Curse on an unlucky Dark Wizard, they are horrified and firmly refuse to use such a harmful spell. They also turn down Merula's offer to learn the Killing Curse.
  • Extracurricular Enthusiast: Accept all the various offers and sidequests that the Hogwarts staff and student body present to you and you'll be swimming in classes and activities. More open up with each new year, to boot.
  • Failed a Spot Check: Depending on your gender and House, the player has somehow never met or even heard of people whom they have shared a room with for either most of the year or multiple years. Male Gryffindor players somehow mistake Jae for a Hufflepuff and female Ravenclaws have never even heard of Badeea (nor she, you), despite sharing dorms with them for four years by that point. This also applies to male Slytherin players with Barnaby in Year 3, female Slytherins with Liz, and more. The only type of players who don’t experience this are female Gryffindors, as there are no notable female Gryffindors besides Angelica. Downplayed in the case of female Hufflepuffs, the only other female Hufflepuff that the player demonstrates no prior knowledge of is Chiara, who even then the player can meet during their first year.
  • Friend to All Living Things: You're quite compassionate to your wards in Care of Magical Creatures, and if you have the gems or notebooks to spare, you can adopt various pets for your dorm. Feeding and bonding with the various beasts in the Magical Creature Reserve also turn even the most rambunctious of the lot into docile friends.
  • Good Is Not Nice:
    • Some of the taunts and options when dealing with enemies are downright cruel.
    • When dealing with Merula, you can bring up how she'll never see her parents again as they're being tortured for eternity in Azkaban, brag about how her former (and only) friend would rather hang out with you than her, or tell her that everyone would be happier if she just disappeared. You can also purposely set her up to be eviscerated by Rita Skeeter in an interview (that you would have ensured she won).
    • You can humiliate your Prefect by bragging about your victory over them in a mock duel.
  • Good Is Not Soft:
    • Toward the end of Year 6, you have the option of exacting revenge on Patricia Rakepick by locking her in a cursed vault, reliving her most traumatising memories forever. The player seems quite content with this decision even after they hear her screams of agony.
    • In Year 7, they can be totally okay with setting up a Niffler as bait for a Wampus cat, and even remark it's a good idea. Liz and Charlie recoil at this.
  • Hate at First Sight: When they first encounter Merula, she is bullying Rowan. This starts things off on a very bad note.
  • Heroic Ambidexterity: While the Player is most often seen using their wand in their right hand, in quidditch, they are able to use the Beater bat with their right and left hand with considerable accuracy, suggesting they're probably ambidextrous.
  • Hero with Bad Publicity: The Player Character's brother is Jacob, who was expelled from Hogwarts and went missing. Some speculate Jacob now works alongside "He Who Shall Not Be Named." The player is treated with distrust by everyone they meet except for their friends like Rowan until they start to make a name for themselves.
  • Heroic Self-Deprecation: This can be played this way. The Player accomplished these amazing feats, was always a reliable friend, and saved many people, though they don't seem to realize how popular they really are and through some dialogue choices, completely talk themselves down. They also may blame themselves for almost every single bad thing that happens at Hogwarts remotely related to the Cursed Vaults and 'R', even things that are way out of their control.
Merula: [to the Player] You must be dafter than I thought if you believe you're responsible for someone else's actions.
  • Honor Before Reason: One of the possible motivations they have for searching for the Vaults; they feel a sense of responsibility to solve the mystery surrounding their brother's disappearance and to protect others at Hogwarts.
  • Humble Hero: When offered the title of 'Hero of Hogwarts' by Dumbledore at the end of Year 6, having personally broken all Cursed Vault curses and brought Rakepick to justice, they can decline the title and claim that they're not a hero, that they were just doing what needed to be done.
    • In Year 7, when asked by Victor about why they dealt with the Doxy Infestation, the Player may remark that it was never about the glory or recognition, but rather it was about helping their friends.
  • Hypocrite: The Player can call out Jacob for claiming fault for all the bad things that happened in their lives, saying that he can't control everything around him, but multiple times the Player does the exact same thing themselves; blaming themselves for everything awful that happened to them and their friends.
  • I Just Want to Be Normal: This can be played like this. Multiple times, the Player can express that sometimes they wish for a normal life, and many Professors, especially Snape and Dumbledore, try to insist they try to behave like a normal student (but the plot kinda makes it hard to).
  • It's All My Fault: May act this way in regards to the things that happen around them, even though it was out of their control. Most notably, they may blame themselves for Rowan's death and the curses that happen each year.
  • It's Personal: The Player may choose to say that finding the Cursed Vaults and doing cursed-breaking was never about the glory or treasure and was always about finding Jacob. When Rowan is killed, bringing Rakepick to justice is their primary goal. After all that is said and done, the reason they're still invested in 'R' is because of the cabal's expressed interest in them.
    • They can tell Jacob this when he questions why the Player keeps trying to 'butt into his business', that it's no longer his fight but their fight too.
  • It's Not You, It's My Enemies: The Player sometimes shows doubt involving their friends in their troubles because it's not their fight and the fact that 'R' is extremely dangerous.
  • It Sucks to Be the Chosen One: They were never The Chosen One like Harry Potter was, but they were chosen by the evil cabal 'R' as their 'leader'. Because of them being targeted this way, their best friend was killed, among a whole host of other pain and suffering. Jacob even says that the Player will never truly be safe until every single last member of 'R' is dealt with.
  • Karmic Nod:
    • By the end of their first year, they know that expulsion is incredibly likely, given everything they've done on school grounds (and Snape is gunning for it). Only Dumbledore's decision not to punish them keeps them at Hogwarts.
    • During the sidequest to become a Prefect in Year 4, your frequent rule-breaking is brought up often; Flitwick says that he hopes your other accomplishments will override your reputation and that accepting the position would put you back on the straight and narrow.
  • The Leader: Can build a coalition of friends that spans all four Houses in their quest for the Vaults. They later establish the Circle of Khanna with Merula and Ben, acting as the unspoken leader of the group.
  • Living Lie Detector: Dumbledore and Snape reveal in Year 5 that both the Player and Jacob are both Legilimens and Snape tutored them briefly in both Legilimency and Occulemency.
  • Locked Out of the Loop: They are the subject of gossip between the teachers, who clearly know more about the mystery involving Jacob than they will tell the player.
    • Jacob also does this to their sibling, locking them out of the loop in order to protect them and not wishing to involve them any further than he already has.
  • Master Actor: Seems to be a pretty good actor. They were cast as the lead role in the sidequest Enchanted Kiss and performed it solo in the finale with glowing reviews. They were able to perfectly copy Rakepick's personality to infiltrate a meeting with 'R'.
  • Mind Rape: A mild example. When it's revealed that the main character is a very vulnerable Legilimens, Snape forcefully pokes around in their mind and roots through their memories to train them in the art of Occlumency. Snape warns them that they are in danger of this if they don't defend their mind.
  • Nice Guy: Depending on their gender, "Girl" instead. They're generally friendly with most of the characters in the game, though some occasional options for rudeness exist.
  • Nice to the Waiter: The House-Elf you ask about the Marauders is very touched that you thanked him for the information. There are also multiple times the Player can be nice to Pitts.
  • "Not So Different" Remark: Although they hated the comparison, Snape claims the Player is not all too different from Rakepick, the latter even having said so herself.
    • Turns out, Snape is not off the mark at all. They are as driven and obsessive about the Vaults as Rakepick/R is (though for different reasons) and are both capable leaders. They can trap Rakepick in the Sunken Vault, not unlike what she had done to Jacob. Steals the cake when the Player is able to perfectly mimic Rakepick's attitude to impersonate her at an R meeting.
    • Rita Skeeter also compares the Player to herself, which is something they can deny or accept.
  • Older Than They Look: Due to the fact that their character model doesn't change much, the Player is about the same height as they were in Year 1, age 11-12, despite being in Year 7, where they would roughly be aged 17-18.
  • Parental Abandonment: While both the Player and Jacob mention their mother, they never mentioned their father. Even in situations where it would make more sense to mention both parents, the Player's father is absent.
    • Becomes quite literal in Year 7 where the leader of 'R', Peregrine, is revealed to be them and Jacob's father, who had left the family at age three.
  • Protectorate: For Jacob. The only reason he vehemently chases after Rakepick and 'R', even after the Cursed Vaults are dealt with, is to protect his precious little sibling.
  • Psychic Block Defense: A little bit. They were trained by Snape in Occlumency, though they haven't mastered it yet.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: They are reckless, but can be played this way (with red being Merula and blue being them).
    • They also have this dynamic with Jacob, best seen in Year 7 as they matured. According to Peregrine, their father, the player has always been who thinks ahead (like their mother) while Jacob has always been more explosive and emotional.
  • Refuge in Audacity:
    • On occasion, though it's not always the best option.
    • Call Snape a House Elf and he'll be so shocked (or impressed) that he doesn't even bother docking House points from you.
  • Revenge Before Reason: It would have been more reasonable to turn in Rakepick to the Ministry so she could be properly interrogated for her involvement with R among other things, but they can allow Rakepick into the vault for the explicit reason to let her suffer for what she's done to their friends, Jacob, and Rowan.
  • The Rival: Can be with a couple of people, but the biggest one is Merula.
  • Samaritan Syndrome: Shows shades of this at times. Even though it's not their fault nor responsibility, the Player feels obligated to deal with the Cursed Vaults and anything bad that happens at Hogwarts. It's so intense that they seem to take responsibility and blame whenever something bad does happen, even if it's way out of their control.
  • The Scapegoat: They willingly take the blame multiple times for things they didn't do. One of the Slytherin sidequests basically has them do this to avoid losing house points.
    • In a moment of anger, Charlie blames the Player for being a Doom Magnet and putting his brothers in danger even though none of what was happening was really their fault.
  • Screw the Rules, I'm Doing What's Right!: No matter how much you try to abide by the rules and concentrate on your studies, the game ultimately makes you continue searching for Cursed Vaults. Additionally, no matter how evil you want to play your character, you aren't allowed to turn to the Dark Arts or become actually evil. The most the game lets you do is be a Jerkass.
  • Secret-Keeper: Other than Mad-Eye Moody, they are one of the few to know that R wants them to become their new leader. At most, if the Player does choose to tell him, even Jacob only knows that they want to recruit his sibling.
    • They are also the only ones among their friends to know that Chiara is a werewolf and that Talbott is an Animagus.
  • Sins Of My Brother: Jacob's legacy hangs over their head constantly, shadowing them most of their time at Hogwarts, and it's not a good kind of legacy.
    • This trope becomes literal in Year 7 when it is revealed the leader of 'R' is their father Peregrine.
  • Teen Genius: Beats upperclassmen in duels, sits at the top of their class, and is undeniably talented.
    • They picked up Wandless magic in record time to duel Merula. While nowhere near as proficient as she is, the fact that she picked it up incredibly fast in that amount of time is impressive in itself.
  • Took a Level in Cynic: While not as intense as Ben took his, after Rakepick's betrayal, Rowan noted that the Player has become way more suspicious of everyone and seemed to have difficulty trusting people.
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: They are, believe it or not. Every time they tamper with and open one of the cursed vaults, another curse is unleashed the following year putting the student body of Hogwarts in danger.
    • Now that the Cursed Vaults are said and dealt with, much of the plot and problems now revolve around the fact that 'R' still has them on their radar and is causing them trouble.

Friends

     Rowan Khanna

The player character's best friend, who shares the same gender as them and is sorted into the same House.

  • Ambiguously Evil: With regards to the true identity of "R". They are persistently suspicious of Ben being the main culprit and attack the Player Character in Year 5. What enforces the ambiguity is that Madam Pomfrey believes the attack was a case of Brain Washed And Crazy, and Rakepick admits that while Rowan is a person of interest, they are not their prime suspect. Though it turns out they had always been the Player's friend and their death proved that.
  • Best Friend: To the player.
  • Bollywood Nerd: The nerdiness is without question, and Rowan's last name coupled with their appearance suggests that they might be of Indian descent.
  • Book Worm: As Madame Pince says, Rowan "spends more time in the library than any other student."
  • Butt-Monkey: They tend to be on receiving end of many jokes and often get the short end of the stick.
  • Decomposite Character: Rowan is often compared to Hermione Granger, although they could also be considered this trope; Rowan got the bookishness and how their friends are more the main character's friends, Ben is the powerful Muggle-born spellcaster and (pre-year 6) voice of caution, while Penny got the potions expertise, fear of flying, and canonical attractiveness.
  • Demoted to Extra: Rowan gradually started being less prominent in the story when Year 3 began, mostly due to newcomers like Barnaby, Tonks, Tulip, Charlie, and André being introduced and playing bigger roles. They haven't been phased out completely and returned briefly as a bigger character in Year 6, only to be killed off soon after.
  • Did I Just Say That Out Loud?: They tend to go off on a tangent on occasion, usually saying more than necessary.
  • Doomed by Canon: Rowan will not achieve their wish of being the youngest Hogwarts professor as, at the age of 21 in 1994, they are not teaching at Hogwarts and Snape was the youngest teacher at 21. Rowan will fail in this quest no matter what.
    • And Rowan does fail, dying at the hands of Patricia Rakepick Taking the Bullet to save Ben from her Killing Curse before even graduating from Hogwarts.
  • Friendless Background: The Player Character is Rowan's first true friend.
  • Friendly Rivalry: They want to be a Prefect, which naturally puts them at odds with you if you accepted the related timed sidequest in year 4. If you have a high enough stat to talk to Rowan about it, they say there is no ill will on their end and wish you the best of luck, and they're glad that you succeed in the end.
  • Gender-Blender Name: Naturally, since their gender is dependent on the player's.
  • Gender Flip: Rowan's gender is always the same as the player character.
  • Gender-Inclusive Writing: Rowan's gender is not explicitly tied to male or female in the game. Rather, they will be male or female depending on whether the protagonist chooses to be a wizard or a witch.
  • Heterosexual Life-Partners: With the Player Character, which may or may not be falling apart, starting during the Perfect quest if you choose not to tell Rowan you’re gunning for Prefect and gets heated in chapter 12 of 5th year when Rowan accuses the player of only talking to their friends when they need something and the Player can clap back about what a poor witch/wizard Rowan is. It’s the first real time this happens.
  • Meaningful Name: Rowan's family owns a tree farm, and Rowan is a type of tree.
    • Could be doubled up, if Rowan is a Ravenclaw. Rowan suspects their parents also named them after Rowena Ravenclaw.
  • Posthumous Character: Starting in early Year 6 to the present.
  • Precocious Crush: Had one on Bill Weasley for a long time. Even had a bit of a Ship Tease when Bill went to hang out with them during the Celestial Ball over his former crush.
  • Present Absence: The game ensures that you know their death is felt at Hogwarts; it casts a shadow over several events and activities that follow, and Dumbledore even calls you into his office to advise that running from your grief will only cause problems later.
  • Sacrificial Lion: A criticism of R among the player base was that they were difficult to deem a real threat when their motives were overly confusing and their methods were anemic at best. The death of Rowan — the player's first and best friend — immediately underscores their presence as a very real and horrific threat.
  • Ship Tease: A little bit, with Bill during the Celestial Ball. Not only is Rowan's confidence bolstered by Bill, who they obviously like, When Emily Tyler tries to ask Bill out again, he declines and decides to hang out with Rowan instead.
  • Taking the Bullet: Rowan dies while saving Ben from Rakepick's Killing Curse.
  • Throw the Dog a Bone: Rowan is finally able to play the part of one of the youngest Professors at Hogwarts during the History of Magic classes, mostly when Professor Binns is too tired to teach anything.

Gryffindor

     Ben Copper

A Gryffindor in the same year as the player. A Muggle-Born, he is very nervous and frightened by all the new and bizarre things he's encountering in the wizarding world.

  • Ambiguous Situation: Starting at the beginning of Year 2, Ben is one of the first victims to Cursed Ice, leaving him in the Hospital Wing with a mysterious letter from the unknown "R", warning the Player Character and their friends to stay away from the cursed vaults. Rowan is the first to suggest that Ben knows more than he's letting on, and given his talent for charms and unnatural humility, many fans have had theories of their own regarding Ben's innocence.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: Whenever you duel Ben, his go-to spell is Attack, showing that underneath it all, Ben can be actually dangerous... when he's not being a gibbering panicking wreck.
  • Brainwashed and Crazy: A possible interpretation for his reveal as the red-cloaked figure who threatened the Player Character to stay away from the vaults, the Forbidden Forest, and Patricia Rakepick. Once the charm is dispelled, Ben claims to not remember anything and that he would never want to hurt his friends.
  • Classical Anti-Hero: Ben fits this role better than anyone, constantly doubting his own skills and not challenging himself without the Player character's encouragement.
  • Cleanup Crew: If you bring him during your foray into the first Cursed Vault, he'll cover your tracks so well that Professor McGonagall can't outright prove that you've been there.
  • Cowardly Lion: He's scared of damn near everything, magical or not, but Ben will never run away when his friends need him. He eventually outgrows this trope and becomes a true Gryffindor.
  • Determinator: During the duel in the forest with Rakepick, despite being hopelessly outmatched and continually knocked down by her spells, he just keeps getting back up, long after Merula and the Player Character have been taken out of the fight. Rakepick is aggravated enough by this that she tries to finally take Ben down using the Killing Curse, which Rowan intercepts.
  • Expy: Of Neville Longbottom. He starts out getting bullied by the main character's Slytherin rival, is afraid of Snape, and has to overcome his fears and insecurities to become a hero.
  • Fish out of Water: As a muggle-born wizard, Ben struggles to adapt to his new life at Hogwarts and is very insecure about himself.
  • Foil: To Hermione Granger. Both of them were born in muggle families. But while Hermione excelled in practically every aspect of witchcraft and wizardry, Ben's personal fear of almost anything keeps him from reaching his full potential.
  • Good All Along: While Ben's innocence has been in question since Year 2, he continues to claim that he knows nothing and is still loyal to his friends. This is further proven when he shields the player character from an incoming spell cast by the red-cloaked figure from last year, and takes down a Brain Washed And Crazy Rowan.
  • Humble Hero: Most likely due to his Muggle Upbringing, Ben isn't one to brag about his latent skill at Charms.
  • Irony: The timid and easily scared Ben is part of the Gryffindor house, who are most well known for bravery.
  • Lovable Coward: Ben might be easily spooked, but he’s still quite endearing.
  • Nice Guy: He might be timid and insecure, but there's no denying Ben has a big heart and cares about his friends, dearly.
  • Official Couple: As revealed in the Valentine's Day Masquerade, he has a crush on Ismelda and is able to ask her out as his date for the celebration.
  • Took a Level in Badass: Downplayed. Initially a scaredy-cat who would jump at the sight of his own shadow, Ben gains more confidence in himself and becomes more of a Cowardly Lion as the game progresses.
  • Took a Level in Jerkass: Following the events of late Year 5 and some of Year 6, he blows right past Cowardly Lion and straight to obnoxious, arrogant recklessness. He is also shown to say insensitive things to the Player and other people.
  • Took a Level in Kindness: Following the events above, Ben mellows out by the end of Year 6, becoming less arrogant and more down to earth, resembling much of his old self. Now he is steadfast and helpful, and a good friend to the Player.
  • Taking the Bullet: When the Player Character is confronted by the robed figure again, Ben shields them from the incoming spell.
  • Trademark Favourite Food: Chips.
  • Undying Loyalty: To the Player Character, whom he calls his favourite classmate. In a letter the player finds in Year 6, which he had written in Year 5 before entering the Cursed Vault, the letter admits that they had always admired the player and that they were an inspiration to him. Later on, Ben tells the player that now that Rowan is gone, the two are the oldest friends.

     Charlie Weasley

     Jae Kim

A Gryffindor you meet in the kitchen during detention. He has a knack for getting into trouble due to running contraband of banned items and poor grades.

  • Brilliant, but Lazy: Jae hates studying and always prefers to take the easy road. However, he has proven to be smarter than your average student, as he was able to recognize the charm that cursed Beatrice as an Undetectable Extension Charm.
  • Foil: With Tulip. Both of them are notorious rule breakers and have a similar disregard of rules. But while Tulip enjoys breaking the rules, Jae prefers to work his way around them. Tulip unleashes chaos for chaos's sake and rarely causes any real harm, while Jae's motivation is profit, sometimes at the dangerous expense of other people.
  • Friend in the Black Market: Is serving detention for bootlegging and selling contraband items at Hogwarts. He rewards your initial meeting with a contraband tool of your choice to aid your hunt for the Cursed Vaults. He also sells Ismelda a love potion when she's determined to make Barnaby love her.
  • Iconic Outfit: Jae is almost never seen without his golden sweater. See Irony below.
  • Irony: He's seen wearing his golden sweater so frequently that some people forget that he's a Gryffindor. He debunks these misconceptions by pointing out that he wears red sneakers and that Gryffindor's colors are also gold.
  • Love Interest: One of the main character's 8 possible love interests.
  • Shipper on Deck: Should the Player Character confess to having a crush on Penny, Jae will encourage them to stop keeping it a secret and tell her.
  • The Slacker: Played Straight. Jae hates hard work and handles things with a very casual attitude.
  • Token Evil Teammate: While not evil per se, Jae is the most amoral of all the Player Character's friends. Jae is a bootlegger who only cares about selling his illegal wares, and not at all what his customers do with them. The full extent of his opportunism becomes apparent during the O.W.L.s, when he sells desperate students items they can cheat on the exams with. He doesn't mention that they're very likely to get caught, ruining any future career prospects. Jae becomes upset when the Player Character discourages Penny, their longtime friend, from buying one of them. However, both Corey and the Player state that despite all this, he still has pretty good morals.

     Corey Hayden

A Gryffindor who’s the opposite gender of the Player. They become the Head Boy/Girl in their 7th year and have a love for wizarding pop culture as well as solving mysteries.

     Bill Weasley

Hufflepuff

     Penny Haywood

A Hufflepuff and one of the most popular girls in the Player's year. She is half-blood, skilled at potions, and always caught up on the latest gossip.

  • The Ace: Excels at potions, knows a fair deal about charms, and is one of the most popular students at Hogwarts.
  • Ambiguously Bi: Should the player say they fancy her, she'll take the confession in stride regardless of the Player Character's gender, though she holds off on giving a proper response until her sister is safe.
  • Attention Deficit... Ooh, Shiny!: A few times, including once when she was distracted by a butterfly while talking about being easily distracted.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: While Penny is very pleasant and easy to get along with, she has also shown to not be afraid of breaking the rules when deemed necessary and knows a variety of deadly potions.
[If you ask Penny during Year 1 to go into the Corridor]
Penny: [After Merula attacks the trio] There won't be enough healing potions in all of Hogwarts to help Merula when I'm done with her...
    [...]
    MC: ...!
  • Big Sister Instinct: She is very protective of her younger sister Beatrice and is reluctant to let her join her friends in uncovering the Cursed Vaults. She is also distraught upon the discovery of her little sister being trapped inside a painting in the Grand Staircase.
    • She also seems to have this towards Ben, as she personally thanks the player for standing up for him.
  • Break the Cutie: Having your little sister trapped in a portrait with the possibility of never escaping will do that to a person. Penny is so overwhelmed with grief, and dedicates almost every waking hour to saving her sister, that she falls behind in her classes and loses contact with her friends.
  • Can't Hold His Liquor: Gets drunk to the point of not recollecting things on Butterbeer, which is generally stated to have a very low alcohol content.
  • Class Princess: Beautiful, social, popular, and one of the kindest in the main cast.
  • Colour Motif: All four of her Romance Sidequest special outfits prominently feature yellow, fitting her cheerful, warm nature, on top of being her house colour (note that almost none of the others have outfits coded to house colours); in Valentine's Day, she says it is her favourite colour.
  • Cool Kid-and-Loser Friendship: Downplayed. She is stated to be the most popular girl of her year and ends up becoming a friend of the player character, who (while not exactly a loser) is looked down upon by many due to their brother's reputation.
    • A more minor example with Liz Tuttle and Talbott Winger. Both of them are some of the school outcasts at Hogwarts, and consider Penny to be their Only Friend.
  • Establishing Character Moment: Her first interaction with the Player Character is thanking them for having the courage to stand up to Merula and protecting Ben, showing how Penny values bravery and compassion.
  • Everyone Loves Blondes: Given Penny's popularity and the fact the Player Character can have a crush on her (and is generally the most commonly picked girl in dating sidequests), she qualifies.
    • If you pick her at the Celestial Ball and then pick someone else for First Date, you will get a break-up scene. Among other things, MC would say a lot of people fancy Penny, and Penny would wonder why so many people ask her out, but not MC.
  • Fashionable Asymmetry: Other than the two braids over her shoulders, she has a third braid that only wraps around the left side of her head. This makes her fall foul of Ambidextrous Sprite very briefly on the Dating announcement, as her face is mirrored but it is noticeable because of this braid.
    • [[spoilers:As an adult, this is inverted; she has two braids that wrap around both sides of her head, and a third braid that falls in front of her left shoulder.]]
  • Flowers of Femininity: Probably the most outwardly feminine girl in the entire cast. During the Festival Fun side quest, she has an outfit with floral patterns and daisies in her braid. For extra cute points, in the Festival Fun loading screen Chiara and Penny are looking at each other and Chiara is plucking a daisy from the ground. She also responds most positively to Madam Puddifoot's Tea Shop's lavish decorations during the First Date side quest.
Penny: Flowers are like smiles that pop up out of the ground.
  • Foil: To Severus Snape. They are both extraordinarily skilled in Potions and both even have heavily scribbled-over copies of Advanced Potion-Making, but otherwise, they are opposites in almost every conceivable way.
  • Gossipy Hens: Due to her popularity, Penny is always up to date on the latest gossip around Hogwarts.
  • Hair of Gold, Heart of Gold: Has blonde hair, and is one of the nicest girls in the game so far.
  • Hypocrite: She's not too keen on the idea of her little sister helping them on a potentially life-threatening mission of uncovering the Cursed Vaults, especially because she's a first-year. However, Penny was the exact same age when she joined the Player Character's adventures.
  • I Let Gwen Stacy Die: During the Summer of 1986, Penny's Muggle friend, Scarlett, was killed by a werewolf. Penny was too frightened to help during the incident and was left wrecked with regret. So much so that she was willing to drink a forgetfulness potion to forget about the event, perhaps even Scarlett altogether. Then in "Gathering of Old Friends" sidequest, this is subverted, as it is revealed that Scarlett not only survived but that she became a werewolf herself because of it.
  • Love Interest: One of the main character's 8 possible love interests.
  • Meaningful Name: Possibly a coincidence, but "Penny" is a diminutive of "Penelope", who is famously loyal to her husband.
  • Memetic Hair: Her unique hairstyle is the subject of many jabs and jokes in-universe from Beatrice, Ismelda, Filch, MC, and even herself.
  • Morality Pet: She seems to be one to Snape of all people, who calls her his best student. She even claims that Snape is "very nice", much to the Player character's disbelief.
  • Nice Girl: she is almost unfailingly nice and pleasant, which explains her popularity as well as her placement in Hufflepuff.
  • No Celebrities Were Harmed: The previous head writer stated he based Penny on Olivia Wilde, who he went to school with.
  • Power Stereotype Flip: Of a sense. As Wizarding World describes, Potions is not for the impatient and carries a certain mystique, and Snape perfectly fits the "brooding, slow-burning personality" stereotype while Penny is excitable, open, and cheerful.
  • Screw the Rules, I'm Doing What's Right!: Penny will break rules with gusto if it means doing the right thing.
  • Stepford Smiler: She becomes this in Year 5. After her sister is revealed to be trapped in a portrait, likely never to escape the player character notes that Penny's smile seems more forced than usual, obviously trying to hide her pain so her friends don't need to worry about her.
  • Why Did It Have to Be Snakes?: Penny is deathly frightened of werewolves and for a very good reason. See I Let Gwen Stacy Die.

     Nymphadora Tonks

     Diego Caplan

A Hufflepuff who enjoys duelling and is considered by many to be the best at the school. Both Merula and the player character receive tutoring from him.

  • Ambiguously Bi: Beyond the Everyone Is Bi nature of the game, Diego flirts with absolutely everybody he comes across.
  • Ambiguously Jewish: "Caplan" is a Jewish surname.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: Very amiable person and a lover of dancing, but he's also recognized as a very talented duelist.
  • Dashing Hispanic: Has a stereotypical Spanish first name and is an honourable duellist, dancer, and G-rated ladies' man.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: Is very jealous of all the attention Cedric Diggory gets upon his arrival at Hogwarts.
  • Nice Guy: One of the most pleasant students you'll meet, even taking his Hufflepuff sorting into account.

     Chiara Lobosca

A witch who the Player Character meets in the Hallowe'en sidequest. Divinations class in Year 6 reveals that she is a Hufflepuff.

  • Agent Mulder: She takes divination seriously and thinks the Quibbler is on to something.
Chiara: The world is full of mysteries. Who am I to say what is and isn't possible?
  • All of the Other Reindeer: When she was younger, she was bullied by other children and called "Grandma Chiara" for her silver hair.
  • The Cobbler's Children Have No Shoes: Chiara is an aspiring Healer with an incurable disease, that being lycanthropy.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: After she was infected, her parents kept her away from most others, and her best friend was scared off by her werewolf form, prompting Chiara's mother to Obliviate her.
  • Dark Secret: She's actually a werewolf, and she takes great pains to control the condition using wolfsbane potion.
  • Empathy Pet: Borf, the wolf pup, can tell who she can trust.
  • Foil: To Penny Haywood. They are both sweet, empathetic Hufflepuff girls, but Penny is terrified of werewolves after one killed her best friend, while Chiara is a werewolf. Penny is open-hearted, gregarious, and cheerful, while Chiara is secretive, distrustful, miserable over her condition, and pushes people away to avoid hurting them. Penny also has her long, blonde hair in elaborate braids, and is overall more classically feminine, while Chiara has fairly short and loose white hair that is not done in any way and has a punkish vibe. Penny is a Quidditch fanatic while it is heavily implied Chiara doesn't like it at all (as seen in the Courtyard date).
    • Speaking of sweetness, depending on your choice, either Chiara or Penny could be the one to send MC a love note with a sugar quill in the Festival Fun side quest. The contrast also extends into romance: Penny is confident and forthcoming, and mentions that lots of people ask her out while Chiara is awkward, insecure, and inexperienced.
  • Gameplay and Story Segregation: If the player upgrades the Sphinx Clubroom enough, Chiara will be seen stargazing despite the fact that a full moon is clearly visible in the sky. She also attends Astronomy class, also when the moon is full.
  • Handy Shortcoming: She becomes very helpful when you have work to do in the Forbidden Forest during the full moon.
  • Healing Hands: Madam Pomfrey calls Chiara her best intern and reveals that she wants to work at St. Mungo's Hospital upon graduating.
  • Keeping Secrets Sucks:
    • You just so happen to converse with her during a time when werewolves are being hunted on school grounds, and by a man who wants to kill them, to boot.
    • It comes up again in the 2019 Halloween event, with Chiara having befriended Remus Lupin and given him wolfsbane potion outside the school's knowledge.
  • Love Interest: One of the main character's 8 possible love interests.
  • Meaningful Name: Lobosca. Fitting for a werewolf.
  • The Medic: She's shown an aptitude for healing, and can often be seen working in the Hospital Wing with Madame Pomfrey even when there's not a specific activity going on there.
  • Mystical White Hair: It's especially striking because up until the point you meet her, Tonks has had the most unusual hair colour. It naturally carries into her werewolf form.
  • Symbol Motif Clothing: She wears a pendant that looks like a moonstone, which is also the reward for reaching max level friendship with her.
  • Tragic Dream: Chiara wishes to become a Healer. Her being a werewolf would be Dream-Crushing Handicap, with Lupin in the main books demonstrating how nearly impossible it is for werewolves to keep any normal job at all, especially for her, as she would be in charge of particularly vulnerable people working in a hospital.
  • Troubled Child: It comes with the territory of her status in the wizarding world, but she has deep-seated trust issues over who she can safely confide in. It takes her a long time to warm up to the player character, and even then, she admits that "hanging out" is largely a foreign concept to her.

Ravenclaw

     Tulip Karasu

A mysterious Ravenclaw student who joins up with the player character in the third year. Seems to have a history with Merula.

  • Ambiguous Situation: From her introduction, it is implied Tulip will betray her friends to get ahead in finding the vaults. More players began to suspect that would come back to bite MC after year 6 chapter 39, in which she somehow collected every comb in the castle, preventing MC from finding one to give to the Merqueen as a tribute to find the last vault. (See the bottom of the WMG page for more wild theories.)
  • Asian and Nerdy: She is in Ravenclaw, and her name implies either Turkish or Japanese ancestry.
  • Bestiality Is Depraved: In a similar vein of implication to Aberforth in the books. Tulip is portrayed as a little too attached to her toad Dennis. During Valentine's Day, she says her love note "could be" for Dennis, and in the Head Boy/Girl side quest, she's trying to transfigure Dennis into a prince after reading the Muggle fairy tale.
Tulip: I'm not ready to give up. Kisses and magic are practically the same thing.
  • Chronic Backstabbing Disorder: Subverted. Merula drops her usual attitude and warns the player character that Tulip will betray them too when she's done using them. This is because Merula considered Tulip to be her first and only friend before Tulip betrayed her. However, after joining the player character's posse, she proves to be a very loyal and trustworthy friend.
  • Dreadful Musician: According to Tulip, she's such a horrendous singer that she's been banned from singing in the shower.
  • Establishing Character Moment: Tulip's introduction involves her having the Player Character defuse a dung bomb strapped to the back of her pet toad, Dennis.
  • Friendly Rivalry: She and Tonks are usually competing to see who's the better troublemaker.
  • Full-Name Basis: She tends to address the player by their full name most of the time.
  • Glory Hound: Deconstructed. She betrayed Merula because she wanted all the glory of finding the vaults by herself. This ended up ruining her relationship with Merula and becoming one of her biggest regrets.
  • I Am Not My Father: Most clearly expressed during the O.W.L. side quest. It is also a very rare moment when you see Tulip angry.
Tulip: Professor Flitwick keeps asking me what I want to do, but all I know is that I don't want to end up like my parents... Working for the Ministery, upholding pointless rules that make people miserable.
  • I Just Want to Have Friends: As her boggart of Merula points out, Tulip is guilty of her betrayal of Merula and is scared of never having friends again.
  • Iconic Item: Tulip is always wearing her Dung-Bomb necklace.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: While she can be a bit chaotic at times, she clearly cares about her friends and is always willing to do the right thing.
  • Love Interest: Subverted. While Tulip was a potential date in early side quests, she was ultimately not included in the game's romance system.
  • Meaningful Name: Her surname translates to crow or raven in Japanese. Guess which house she's part of?
    • Another layer to her name is its connection with Merula's. Merula is Latin for blackbird. Tulip and Merula were once best friends in the past.
  • Necessary Fail: As her boggart reveals, Tulip blames herself for getting sent away from her parents and destroying her friendship with Merula, helping create the antisocial bully she is in Hogwarts. Despite this setback, Tulip has since become less of a Glory Hound and considers her friendship with the Player Character to be the second chance she's been looking for.
  • Noodle Incident: She claims to have once snuck a book about pranks out of the restricted area of the library, resulting in the near destruction of the Owlery. She considers it one of her finer moments.
  • The Prankster: While not on such a large scale as Tonks, Tulip enjoys pulling pranks involving Dungbombs and Stink Pellets. In fact, her Establishing Character Moment involves her having the Player Character defuse a dung bomb strapped to the back of her pet toad to test their tenacity.
  • Rebellious Spirit: Tulip enjoys breaking the rules on the grounds that "Hogwarts has too many [of them]" and "[they] are meant to be broken."
  • Sitcom Arch-Nemesis: Towards MC in the two Prefect quests due to her attitude toward rules.
Tulip: I've always wanted a proper adversary...
  • Strict Parents Make Sneaky Kids: Part of the reason she's so rebellious and secretive is that her parents are strait-laced government workers.
  • Those Two Girls: Due to her fondness for pranks and rule-breaking, Tulip becomes quick friends with Tonks.
  • We Used to Be Friends: Was once Merula's best and only friend before she betrayed her.

     André Egwu

"I'm just a Quidditch player with decent fashion sense."

A Quidditch-loving Ravenclaw, and one of the most skilled fliers in the player character's year. Also known for having a keen sense of fashion.

  • The Ace: Deconstructed. Turns out, André is such a skilled Quidditch player that other students have become enemies with him out of jealousy.
  • Early-Bird Cameo: André personally introduces himself to the Player Character in Year 3 but is not available as a friend until Year 4.
  • Fanboy: André is a huge fan of Pride of Portree to the point he wears one of their scarves as his personal accessory.
  • Intergenerational Friendship: The "Poor Sport" sidequest reveals that his grandmother taught him to play Quidditch and was a respected member of Pride of Portree, hence his deep love for the game and that team in particular. He even got her tickets to a coming event he was scheduled to play in courtesy of Professor Dumbledore.
  • I Owe You My Life: André was one of the many students whose lives were threatened by the cursed ice during Year 2. The main reason he decides to join the player character is because he knows about their efforts to break the cursed vaults and wants to help out however he can.
  • Lovable Jock: André is one of the top flyers on the Hogwarts Quidditch team but assists Madam Hooch in flying class and is an overall likeable guy.
  • Love Interest: One of the main character's 8 possible love interests.
  • Sharp-Dressed Man: André is a clothes horse and is considered one of the most fashionably dressed students at Hogwarts. After introducing himself to the player, André gives them some new clothes. He also wears a Pride of Portree scarf at all times.

     Badeea Ali

A Ravenclaw artist, whom the Player Character seeks to learn more about magical portraits in Year 5.

  • Artistic Licence – Religion: Badeea wears a hijab, which indicates she is a Muslim. Islam heavily condemns the practice of any form of magic, making it very unlikely for any Muslim to attend Hogwarts. Of course, given that Potterverse magic is inborn, cannot be gotten rid of, and has a tendency to react explosively when one does not know how to control it, either her family came to a personal decision when warned about what could happen or Muslim witches and wizards have found a way to reconcile their faith and their powers. It's also possible they're not completely devout, and so the magic aspect isn't a problem.
    • However, even less-devout Muslim fans have found Badeea's reverence for the stars an issue, as relying on the stars for answers is heavily frowned upon in the Muslim faith. Although, in the Potterverse, heavenly bodies do have an impact on magic.
  • Book Worm: Much like Rowan, Badeea spends much of her time reading books and researching new kinds of spells. Unlike Rowan, she spends so much time wrapped up in her own studies, she doesn't pay much attention to current events at Hogwarts.
  • Eccentric Artist: Mostly Averted. Despite art and culture being some of her greatest passions, Badeea is presented as a very level-headed, down-to-earth individual. The only thing that seems "odd" to her, is her lack of knowledge of current events around Hogwarts or the identity of the player character who has gained a reputation as the school's resident curse breaker.
  • Failed a Spot Check: Badeea has no idea who the Player is, which is especially egregious if the player is a female Ravenclaw.
  • Like Father, Unlike Son: Her mother is a Muggle engineer who dislikes the fact that Muggle technology does not work at Hogwarts whereas Badeea is a witch, an artist, and a spell-creator. Both engineers and artists require imagination and invention, however.
  • Love Interest: One of the main character's 8 possible love interests.
  • Teen Genius: She already knows how to Apparate by the time she's a fifth-year though it's actually just an illusion with an invisibility cloak, and she has already invented spells of her own.

     Talbott Winger

A Ravenclaw with an interest in potions, he is fairly aloof and cryptic during the main story the few times he appears. A timed sidequest has him assist the player character in brewing an Animagus potion.

  • Ambiguously Brown: Nothing is known about his family, making his heritage a complete mystery.
  • Big Ol' Eyebrows
  • Blatant Lies: You didn't hear him say, "We are going to brew a potion." Really.
  • The Cynic: Talbott is very slow to trust others, mostly due to being an unregistered Animagus.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: His family was attacked by Death Eaters in the war. He escaped due to being an unregistered Animagus, but his parents were both killed.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Emphasis on "deadpan".
  • Deceased Parents Are the Best: With what little he shares, Talbott speaks very highly of both of his parents and is clearly still trying to cope with their loss.
  • Early-Bird Cameo: He's first introduced in the Animagus side quest before becoming a main friend after the Flying Solo side quest.
    • Before that, you can spot him in the Library at one point, looking like a new background NPC.
  • Hidden Heart of Gold: As much as Talbott tries to act like he doesn't care, he really does.
  • I Just Want to Have Friends: He speaks shortly and directly, but it comes across as a defence mechanism to cope with his loneliness.
  • Loners Are Freaks: He's one of, if not the, most reclusive students at Hogwarts who rarely hangs out with anyone.
  • Love Interest: One of the main character's 8 possible love interests.
  • Meaningful Appearance: He has piercing brown eyes, two-toned, feathery hair, and a rather prominent nose. Very much resembling an eagle.
  • Meaningful Name: Winger. Take a guess on what his Animagus form is.
  • Noble Bird of Prey: His Animagus form is an eagle.
  • Love Confession: During a side quest, you can give one of these to Talbott. You Obliviate him right after, though.
  • Odd Friendship: Penny seems to be the only person he considers a friend before meeting the Player Character, who lampshades the oddity of their relationship, Penny being outgoing, friendly, and upbeat, and Talbott being more reserved, quiet, and somber.
  • The Quiet One: Talbott is a reserved character and doesn't make too much of an effort to express himself. Justified considering his Dark and Troubled Past.
  • Secret-Keeper: Professor McGonagall knows about his unregistered status and is pressuring him to rectify it, but she hasn't taken any steps herself due to sympathising with his fear.
  • Tragic Keepsake: Talbot's prized possession is a necklace that once belonged to his now-deceased mother. Helping him locate the necklace is what finally gets him to open up and become your friend.

     Victor Ketsueki

A Ravenclaw and former loner before becoming suddenly popular after he was transformed into a vampire while on holiday during the summer of 1990.

Slytherin

     Merula Snyde

An egotistical and mean-spirited Slytherin in the player's year. She is insistent on proving her superiority over the player character and the rest of Hogwarts.

  • Abusive Parents: It’s bad enough having imprisoned Death Eaters as parents and an aunt that seldomly shows up whenever Merula comes back during summer breaks. But things goes From Bad to Worse when it’s revealed that said aunt is actually “R”’s The Director and that during the summer before the sixth year, she tricked Merula into make the Unbreakable Vow, forcing her to “stay loyal to her true family” in exchange for the strength to defeat Rakepick without telling her her true identity until it was too late.
  • Ambiguously Evil: Starting at the end of Year 6, when it's revealed she had joined R for reasons unknown, the same one who supposedly killed Rowan and caused all the pain and suffering at Hogwarts. Her motivations to join R become the new driving point of the plot now that the Cursed Vaults are closed.
  • Anime Hair: Even more egregious because most of the other characters have subdued or reasonable haircuts. Still can't beat Tonks in the hairdo department though.
  • Always Second Best: Stated in the story to be a genius witch by multiple characters. She still always ends up being upstaged by the protagonist, contributing to her resentment of him/her.
  • Bad Liar: Merula's eyes dart from side to side when she lies as pointed out by Snape who straight up says that she is an absolutely atrocious liar, particularly for a Slytherin.
  • Book Worm: Can often be found reading in the library, though she'll stop reading to insult you when you interact with her.
  • Butt-Monkey: Even though she deserves 90% of it, absolutely nothing seems to ever go her way when the protagonist gets involved.
  • The Bully: Merula Snyde begins the game bullying you out of jealousy. Depending on how you interact with her, she may end up coming around.
  • Character Development: It's subtle, but it's there. As the years go by, Merula seems to become less resentful and more cooperative when dealing with the Player Character. Where Merula left them locked in a room with a Devil's Snare in Year 1, she outright refuses to torture them for information in Year 3 and actually decides to work together with the Player Character in their search for the vaults.
    • Year 7 marks the first time Merula actually shows up in Potions class as someone to talk to during class, showing how close they've gotten to the Player. Normally either Rowan or Barnaby would be in this position.
  • Confound Them with Kindness: Merula's so used to being scorned by you and everyone else that being helpful or kind to her leaves her flabbergasted.
    • You get a very overwhelmed and confused thank you if you vote for her in Rita Skeeter's popularity contest. If anyone knows Rita though, this ultimately backfires on her.
    • Charlie Weasley's go-to method for dealing with her insults is kindness and compassion rather than responding in kind. To the Player Character's amazement, this completely throws Merula's balance off and stops her tirade in its tracks.
    • In a twist, she does this to the Player in Year 7. She's being oddly nice, offering advice on wandless magic after their duel. If the Player says that Rowan helps them focus, Merula even tells them that 'Khanna would be pleased'.
  • Contrasting Sequel Antagonist: While she, Barnaby, and Ismedla seem initially like knockoffs of Draco's Gang from the books, they're revealed over time to be quite different from their book counterparts.
    • Merula would obviously be Draco, yet she's a loner ostracized by even her house for her behaviour, sits at the bottom of the wizarding social hierarchy due to her imprisoned parents, has to earn everything with nothing but her talent, and gives off a punk vibe. Draco, in contrast, was a wealthy blueblood who used his family's status to push things in his favour and was fairly popular among his house.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: Both her parents were Death Eaters who are currently in Azkaban. She's technically being taken care of by her Aunt, but she doesn't show up very often, leading her to spend most of her summer alone.
  • Dating Catwoman: She's the Catwoman to the player character's Batman if they start dating.
  • Depending on the Writer: Merula's characterization notably varies between the side quests, her Romance Sidequest, and the main story. As a result, she can come across as a Jerkass/Jerk with a Heart of Gold, The Bully/Reformed Bully, an Arch-Enemy/Friendly Rival, etc... all in the same school year.
  • Determinator: Even more so than the player character. Merula will pick herself up and continue to challenge the player character and search for the vaults with the same zeal, no matter how many times she fails.
  • Disproportionate Retribution: She tricks you into entering a storeroom filled with Devil's Snare for the most heinous crime of accusing her of sabotaging your potion, which she most likely did. As malicious as this was, she did tell the player character the Devil's Snare's weakness, a spell which the player character had recently demonstrated mastery of, and Hagrid was nearby to bust down the door. Still, though, the "prank" could have easily turned fatal, even if the intent was not necessarily murder.
  • Eating Lunch Alone: Unsurprisingly, most of the other students don't seem to want to go near her. Though in later years, she befriends Ismelda, who she is often seen hanging around with. Sometimes, she even sits with the Player and their friends unprompted.
  • Everyone Has Standards: Despite her unpleasant attitude and relationship with the Player Character, she has shown to have some standards.
    • Ismelda recommends torturing the player and their friends, which causes Merula to angrily tell her that she has some real issues, showcasing that Merula is unwilling to stoop to torture.
    • After learning Talbott's secret as an unregistered Animagus, she promises to keep it a secret, claiming that while she may be a bit of a bully, she would not wish to ruin a person's entire life.
  • Excessive Evil Eyeshadow: Notable for being the only girl with obvious eye shadow and one of the main antagonists.
  • Face–Heel Turn: Not that she was a great person to begin with, but most of her antagonism was just schoolyard rivalry and a desire to be the best. Then Chapter 45 of year 6 sees her allying with "R".
  • Fantastic Racism: Merula seems to have it in big for wizards from Muggle families, believing they and half-bloods have no place in the world of Witchcraft and Wizardry.
  • The Gadfly: Comes with being The Bully. Merula will break rules and taboos, purposely lose house points, use slurs, and do whatever it takes to get under everyone's, not just the player character's, skin. The best example of her gadfly tendencies is flippantly using Voldemort's name, greatly discomforting everyone around her. When challenged by her prefect on the matter, she brushes him off with a "whatever."
  • Gameplay and Story Segregation: In Year 6, she can be downright antagonistic with the player despite their attempts to talk their feelings out and has told them that she didn't need them. Right afterwards, the Player can take her out on a date with little to no animosity shared between them whatsoever.
    • In Year 7, the Player is outright suspicious of her because of her joining R, but can still take her on dates.
  • Glory Seeker: Her primary motivation for searching for the Vaults. She believes that unlocking their secrets will ensure that nobody doubts her prowess.
  • Hated by All: Implied. Due to her constant bullying of not only the main character but everyone, it seems as though she doesn't have too many friends. Penny and Ben both thank you for standing up to her while expressing their distaste for her. Plus, if Merula is in the Great Hall, she is often eating and studying alone, though later is seen hanging around often with Ismelda.
  • Hidden Depths:
    • Merula can sing. She's good enough that Rowan, who utterly despises her, actually compares her to a Siren. This is first hinted at in the Christmas event during which Peeves tells you to get her a songbook for a gift. She loves it much to your character's surprise.
    • She successfully conjures a Patronus, albeit an incorporeal one, if you direct her to attack the Dementor in the related sidequest.
  • Jerkass: Mocks you about your loss of house points in the first year... even if you're also in Slytherin and even though she is usually the reason you're losing them. She becomes so desperate to sabotage you that she frames you for theft in Year 2, though you're able to get away scot-free if you have a high enough Knowledge stat.
  • Last-Name Basis: Almost always calls the player character their last name.
  • Loners Are Freaks: Due to pissing off everyone by being such an egotistic Jerkass, she really has no friends. The player character can even taunt her about it, telling her that everyone would be happier if she just disappeared.
  • Love Interest: One of the main character's 8 possible love interests.
  • Mad Libs Catchphrase: "I'm the most powerful witch at Hogwarts!" and its "I'm the most [adjective] [noun] at Hogwarts!" variants.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: In Year 7, Merula is unusually cheerful and kind, which is odd considering how foul-tempered and egocentric she is most of the time, which makes the Player rightfully suspicious of her possible allegiance to R.
  • Parental Abandonment: Likely one of the reasons for her surly and aggressive attitude.
  • Pet the Dog: The player has the option of getting her a Christmas gift in one questline. Peeves suggests a songbook. Much to the MC's surprise, Merula's genuinely grateful for her gift and wishes them a happy Christmas in response.
    • Does this to the Player upon giving them Wandless Magic advice.
  • Precocious Crush: Has one on Jacob after getting to know him, which rightfully makes the Player feel awkward, even more so if Merula was their romantic interest.
  • The Resenter: It's heavily implied that Merula's contempt for the player character is the fact that they are a more accomplished student than her.
  • The Rival: Of the Player Character.
  • Secret Relationship: Uniquely among all the MC's classmates, Merula has a romance gauge, but no friendship meter to pair it with, and on the first time the Player would date her in Hagrid's Garden and the Courtyard, it's stated by Merula herself to happen in complete secrecy, implying this about their whole relationship. It also underscores her tsundere tendencies.
  • Shapeshifting Failure: An optional sidequest in Year 6 has her performing Self-Transfiguration. Her attempt to Transfigure herself into a Thunderbird instead causes her to transform into a Flobberworm. A later attempt at fixing this causes her to turn into a Puffskein.
  • She Cleans Up Nicely: If you do some digging in the game files, you can find this. She ends up wearing it to the Celestial Ball.
  • Sins of Our Fathers: After her parents are locked up in Azkaban, young Merula lives alone in an empty house, where victims of Death Eaters send threats to; she rarely leaves the house as a result.
  • Small Name, Big Ego: Merula's extreme narcissism makes her believe she is the number one student at Hogwarts despite the fact she has little to no friends, lies near the very bottom of the Hogwarts house points poll, and is disliked by almost everyone.
  • Smug Snake: Merula is convinced she is the absolute best at Hogwarts and that everyone else is beneath her. Especially Mud-bloods. See Small Name, Big Ego above.
  • Surrounded by Idiots: Combined with Only Sane Man; the two underlings she recruits in the third year are not the sharpest or sanest of individuals.
  • Teen Genius: Many characters in-game find her loathsome but still acknowledge her talent at magic. It's probably the only reason why she gets away with so much despite being as unpleasant as possible to everyone around her.
    • "Merula is a genius witch. You might not like her personality, but you have to acknowledge her skill." - Tulip
    • "Congratulations, Miss Snyde! No longer will anyone let your horrible demeanour overshadow your undeniable talent." - Rita
  • Teeth-Clenched Teamwork: Merula and the Player Character are forced to set aside their differences on more than one occasion in order to achieve a (sort of) common goal; normally filled with bitter words and backhanded compliments.
  • Then Let Me Be Evil: People assume malicious behavior from her so often despite her protests that she behaves this way at times.
  • Tomboy: Extremely competitive, doesn't care too much about her physical appearance, and loves nothing more than a good fight.
  • Took a Level in Kindness: Sort of. She's noticeably softened up by Year 5 as she doesn't seem against Rakepick's idea of her, Bill, and the main character working together as a team. Her remarks to the main character also seem to be less mean and more like snarky jabs. An example of this is in defence against the dark arts class where she'll sometimes remark that the MC "Isn't the worst study partner" she could have. While she gets a bit snippy in Year 6, in Year 7 she has basically become this, though it isn't clear if it was a really a good thing considering her possible allegiance with R
  • Tsundere: If she wasn't before, she's definitely this by Year 5, especially if the Player decides to romance her. Though she's still abrasive, sarcastic, and aggressive towards the Player Character, she's also willing to put herself on the line for them in her own backhanded way. She also jumps at the chance if asked to be the Player Character's date for the Celestial Ball, even if both of them rationalize it as just a temporary armistice in their arch-rivalry. Most if not all of her romance has her bickering with the Player, only to throw in a backhanded compliment and a kiss every so often.
  • Ungrateful Bastard: Still has the energy to angrily insult the player character and tell them this changes nothing if they save her from becoming encased in ice. She does soften up in the future though.

     Barnaby Lee

"Sometimes I wish Hogwarts was nothing but Nifflers and Puffskeins."

One of the two Slytherin underlings Merula recruits in the third year. While not the sharpest tool in the shed, Barnaby is a highly skilled duelist with a fondness for magical creatures.

  • Abusive Dad: Occasionally makes comments about his Death Eater dad treating him badly, and when he allows you to practice Legilimens on him, your character is shocked by what they see of his home life.
  • Ambiguously Bi: During the sidequest, "Crushed", Barnaby thanks the player character for always doing nice things for him and admits to liking them, regardless of their gender, and is quite flustered whilst admitting it. He is also a possible Celestial Ball date for characters of either gender.
  • Anti-Villain: Not a bad guy despite being in Merula's gang, just incredibly gullible and not particularly bright.
  • Bruiser with a Soft Centre: He may be physically intimidating and very passionate about fighting and duelling, but his favourite class is Care of Magical Creatures, and he has a fondness for the cute ones.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: He's a Slytherin, tall, buff, and imposing, but he is actually one of the nicest and most generous of your friends once you get to know him, especially when compared to the likes of Merula and Ismelda.
  • The Ditz: When Merula tells him to spy on the Player Character during potions class, Barnaby's first course of action is to approach the player and tell them, in a perfectly amiable way, that he was told by Merula to spy on them.
  • Dumb Muscle: Big, musclebound, towers over his classmates but isn't all that bright.
  • Expy: His personality and buff appearance aren’t too far off from Sonic Boom’s version of Knuckles.
  • Fluffy Tamer: The most enthusiastic Care of Magical Creatures student at Hogwarts, no matter how dangerous the subject.
  • Friend to All Living Things: He adores magical creatures.
  • Heel Realization: One of the options that's open to the player character is trying to get him to do this. He does eventually get sick of Merula's taunting and agrees to befriend the player.
  • Idiot Savant: Barnaby is a naturally talented duelist, which is probably why Merula and the rest of his house tolerate him. As evidenced by his quiz when you eat lunch with him, he also knows a lot about magical creatures.
    • "Barnaby is one of the strongest wizards of our year, but he's thicker than a troll." - Rowan
  • Kind Hearted Simpleton: He may be denser than a stack of bricks, but Barnaby is surprisingly friendly for a Slytherin.
  • Like Father, Unlike Son: An amiable, if dumb kid who wants to do what's right; you'd never guess his parents are Death Eaters.
  • Love Interest: One of the main character's 8 possible love interests.
  • Minion with an F in Evil: Outright tells the protagonists that Merula sent him to get close to them to spy on them. Even when he initiates a duel with the PC, it ends up being the first step into winning him over to your side and away from Merula's gang.
  • Oblivious to Love: Ismelda is hopelessly in love with him. Barnaby being Barnaby has a bit of a hard time understanding how she really feels about him.
  • Sarcasm-Blind: The protagonist can choose to sarcastically compliment him, but Barnaby will just take it at face value and thank them heartily for it.
  • Smarter Than You Look: Possibly. His highest stat when you're about to duel him is, surprisingly, Knowledge, at a whopping 18. According to his uncle, Barnaby is the smartest person in the Lee family.
  • Sweet Tooth: He seems fixated on sweets and is bribed to talk to the player with a box of peppermint toads.
  • Taking the Bullet: When a Brainwashed and Crazy Rowan attacks the Player Character, Barnaby jumps in the path of the spell. He isn't killed, just injured, but he expresses to the Player Character that he would much rather he get hurt than them.
  • Token Good Teammate: For Merula's gang until he joins the player.
  • Unwitting Pawn: Believes that Merula is the good guy in her whole affair with the protagonist and that they are the ones bullying her.
  • Younger Than They Look: He's 14 years old at the most when introduced to the player in Year 3, but his character design is big and buff enough to pass for an older student, especially contrasted with the other characters in his year (who have aged little since Year 1). The developers seemed to have realized this and have made him a bit younger-looking to compensate.

     Ismelda Murk

A creepy Slytherin witch who becomes one of Merula's friends.

  • Black Shirt: One of her first lines is her saying that she hopes whatever's in the Cursed Vaults is something that can bring back the Dark Lord.
  • Butt-Monkey: She's always the one who Rakepick chooses to be on the receiving end of whichever spell you learn in Defence Against The Dark Arts class. In year six, Bill continues this trend.
  • Comedic Sociopathy: Ismelda thinks the solution to every problem, no matter how trivial, is an Unforgivable Curse.
  • Drink-Based Characterization: ...In contrast to her characterization, her drink order is a Pumpkin Fizz. With whipped cream. And a tiny umbrella.
  • Early-Bird Cameo: Actually appeared on the student ranking list well before her introduction. Indeed she appeared so early that she wasn't even given a surname at the time, with just "Placeholder" appearing instead.
  • Enemy Mine: With the Player Character during the "Crushed" sidequest.
    • And again with the player character and Peeves during the "One Ghastly Prank" sidequest. Apparently, Rita Skeeter is just that bad.
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones: As cruel and sadistic as she is, Ismelda at least seems to value her friendship with Merula, as she confronts them during Animagus Adventure, having become jealous of their apparent closeness with her Only Friend.
  • Evil Cannot Comprehend Good: Downplayed. It's not that Ismelda doesn't know how to be nice. She's just terrible at it to the point she can't say "thank you" or smile without thinking of something that isn't a curse.
  • Evil Is Petty: She says she's working on a hex that "will instantly spoil the end of any novel the target reads."
    • During "The All-Wizard Tournament" side quest, she and Merula occupy training dummy for hours more than they meant to because she likes making Badeea wait.
  • Eviler than Thou: She pushes Merula towards being more evil or actually harming the player character. In one such instance, Ismelda recommended torturing the player character and his/her friends to ascertain what they knew about the cursed vaults, causing Merula to angrily retort that "talking to [them] was torture" enough and that she "has some serious issues".
  • Expy: Severus Snape, with a Gender Flip. Bullied by Gryffindors, extremely abrasive and seemingly evil with Hidden Depths, particularly being in love with a pure of heart friend they eventually fall out with. They even both have hooked noses and canonically greasy black hair.
  • Foe Romance Subtext: As mentioned in the quote in Suspiciously Specific Denial, it's obvious that she's attracted to Barnaby despite him leaving her and Merula. This is later confirmed during the sidequest, "Crushed", where the Player character and Penny help her confront her feelings for him.
  • Foil: To Bellatrix Lestrange. They are among the few named female supporters of the Dark Lord, and the even fewer who remained vocally supportive after his apparent downfall. They are both Eerie Pale-Skinned Brunette, exhibit excessive cruelty and one-sided romantic obsessions, and have first names with similar warlike meanings. However, while Bellatrix is a genuinely deranged killer, and despite all of Ismelda's bluster, the latter barely does anything worse than knocking someone over.
  • For the Evulz: Mentions in Care of Magical Creatures that she saves her snacks to eat rather than using them to feed the creatures.
  • Freudian Excuse: Has suggested that she's been on the receiving end of abuse from Gryffindors, and that's why she's always threatening to kill them.
  • Hidden Depths:
    • She apparently likes dogs since she seems very eager to pet Fang when you bring him with you to Care Of Magical Creatures to look for Scabbers. Of course, this being Ismelda, she threatens to kill you instead of asking nicely.
    • She's also very knowledgeable when it comes to history. It turns out that the reason she's always asleep in History of Magic class is that she already knows all of it.
  • Morality Pet: Beatrice. Ismelda seems to genuinely care about and is protective of her.
  • Official Couple: In a surprising twist, it is revealed that Ben had a crush on her and was able to ask her out on the Valentine's Day Masquerade. She accepted, but it's unclear whether or not she was able to figure out the asker was Ben.
  • Pet the Dog: Wanting to use a love potion to make Barnaby love her, the player can talk her out of it, which makes her realize that it wouldn't be fair on Barnaby and eventually decides to let it go.
  • She Cleans Up Nicely: In Celestial Ball, she has a beautiful outfit and makeup.
  • Suspiciously Specific Denial: Has this very interesting little comment to make if you click on her while talking to Rakepick in the courtyard in Year 5:
  • Villainous Crush: She's hopelessly in love with Barnaby who is more comfortable having her as a friend.
  • "Well Done, Daughter!" Girl: Ismelda's sister has always been The Ace, so Ismelda felt that her parents never really noticed her, and she began acting out to try to get their attention.

     Liz "Lizard" Tuttle

A Slytherin with an affinity for magical creatures, who assists the Player Character and Penny in their task to brew a Polyjuice potion.

  • Better with Non-Human Company: Liz clearly isn't in her most comfortable zone when dealing with people and usually prefers the company of creatures.
  • Cloudcuckoolander:
    • Her very first interaction with the player character is asking them which magical creature they prefer, leaving them slightly puzzled.
    • During a Care for Magical Creatures lesson, she claims a fire crab is speaking to her in a secret sign language.
  • Early-Bird Cameo: Appears in the Polyjuice sidequest and in some of the Player Character's classes but can't be befriended until Year 5.
  • Expy: Of Newt Scamander. Both of them are very awkward when dealing with people and find more companionship with magical creatures. They also happen to have very similar names.
  • Friend to All Living Things: As revealed in Year 5 Chapter 8, when you must duel an escaped Chimarea. Liz is relieved you're okay, but also worried and relieved regarding the fate of the Chimarea, whom she manages to calm down with a little snack—of creature food, not flesh. During this scene, Liz also reveals she normally doesn't eat red meat, indicating she's probably some form of a vegetarian, if not full vegan.
  • Meaningful Name: More of her nickname, "Lizard", given her fondness for magical creatures.
  • Soapbox Sadie: According to pop-up dialogue, she has berated Flitwick for using fairies as decorationnote , refuses to eat meatnote , is on a hunger strike for House Elves, thinks Freezing Charms are inhumane to pixies note , and more. Almost all her lines are about some form of rights for creatures. Weirdly, she seems okay with using Fire Crabs to power a bonfire in Fiji, despite taking issue with using fairies to decoratenote

Other
     Jacob

The player's missing older brother, who disappeared after being expelled from Hogwarts. He was reportedly obsessed with finding the Cursed Vaults, and his behaviour became increasingly erratic until his expulsion.

  • Ambiguously Evil: Seems this way at first thought it is revealed that he genuinely loved his sibling later on and just wanted to keep them out of danger.
    • Merula claims that Jacob joined Voldemort and became a Death Eater, but this is denied by the player.
    • A centaur claims that Jacob betrayed him and stole a precious family heirloom. One of the items you found in a Cursed Vault previous to meeting the centaur indicates that this was indeed true.
    • The ghost of a deceased Hogwarts student and his former friend, Duncan Ashe, blames Jacob for his death, although Jacob wasn't entirely at fault for this nor directly responsible.
    • The ghost of Duncan Ashe also revealed that Jacob allowed himself to be expelled to protect "R" for unknown reasons despite "R" or a group connected to "R" threatening Jacob's friends and his and his sibling's mother.
    • Upon his release from the cursed portrait, though he seems genuinely happy to see his sibling again, he's insistent on tracking down Rakepick and demands that the Player not even tell their mother that he's still alive.
    • Pointedly refuses to allow the player to join him in his hunt for Rakepick and is upset that the player is even trying to get at the Cursed Vaults. It was revealed that he just wants to protect them, but at the time, it seemed like he could've been working for them.
  • Ambition Is Evil: Unlike his younger sibling who had only obsessed over the Cursed Vaults to find him and later avenge the death of their best friend, Jacob had only chased after the Cursed Vaults for the promise of treasure and power. He even worked alongside Rakepick and 'R' to achieve that. After falling victim to the Buried Vault and seeing how much grief and pain he had caused his younger sibling, Jacob realizes how foolish he's really been.
  • Big Brother Instinct: While he admittedly hasn't really been the greatest brother, Jacob steps up his game as soon as he hears that his younger sibling is in danger. When their younger sibling was attacked and (unbeknownst to him) was about to be kidnapped, he chased away the Dark Wizard. When he realized that R was targeting his younger sibling, he switched focus from Rakepick/R to protecting his little sibling. Happened again when the player's infiltration into R went awry, he stepped in immediately and yelled at them to stay away from his little sibling.
Jacob: Now get away from my brother/sister!
    • He is also quite soft to the player, should they play into being his 'precious little sibling'. After the Cursed Vaults were said and done, his main reasoning for continuing to chase R is to keep his little sibling safe.
  • Byronic Hero: He is enigmatic and how he is may very well change significantly as the story progresses, but right now, he's shaping up quite like one.
  • Declaration of Protection: Swears to his younger sibling that he would protect them no matter what, especially if they decide to tell him about why R really wanted with them and has stated that he won't rest until his dear little 'Pip' was safe from all of R.
Jacob: Whatever happens, I'll protect you.
  • Don't Tell Mama: Asks his younger sibling not to tell their mother about his activities when they find and free him.
  • Driven to Madness: Supposedly, according to others around him. According to Dumbledore, he grew more and more obsessive about the Cursed Vaults every single year, which eventually led to his expulsion.
  • It's Not You, It's My Enemies: The reason why he avoided his sibling is because he knew how dangerous 'R' was and wasn't willing to put them in danger.
  • Living Lie Detector: Just like his younger sibling, Jacob is a Legilimens.
    • He was able to tell his sibling was lying to him if they chose not to tell him about what 'R' really wanted from them.
  • No Social Skills: Jacob said that he never really paid attention to his classmates (outside Duncan and Olivia who were helping him with the Cursed Vaults) and spent much of his years focused on the Cursed Vaults, 'R', and Rakepick. He and his sibling both bond over the fact that they've never been normal students and he doesn't appear to have any friends outside their little sibling.
  • Older Than They Look: Despite how he looks, Jacob is actually in his late 20s and is nearly a decade older than his younger sibling, but is biologically about the same age as them due to being stuck in the Buried Vault for most of that time. He does at least act his actual age though.
  • Posthumous Character: Most students and staff assume that he is deceased, but the Player isn't so sure. Most people act like he is though. He turns up alive in Year 5, having been trapped in a portrait for all the years he's been missing.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: He can have this dynamic with his younger sibling, best exemplified in Year 7 if the player chooses to continually doubt their father's sincerity. Peregrine basically tells the younger one that they are more like their mother (who always thinks ahead) while Jacob was more explosive and emotional.
  • Sanity Slippage: According to some sources, he began acting more strange and troublesome over his school career, culminating in his expulsion.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: He has a unique model that may not resemble the player character due to customisation, but his hair, eye, and skin colours are always exactly the same as yours.
    • Peregrine looks like an upscaled version of him, same clothing sense and everything.
  • Teleportation: Jacob is a master of Apparition, despite his youth.
