Zed

Voiced by: Kahoru Sasajima (JP); Brandon Winckler (EN)
The protagonist of Disgaea 6: Defiance of Destiny. Once a lowly, weak zombie, through the Super Reincarnation process by Cerberus, he became powerful enough to challenge the God of Destruction. He's extremely stubborn and refuses to give up on what he sets his mind to.
  • Affectionate Nickname: His sister calls him "Bubby," a name he wears with pride.
  • Birds of a Feather:
    • He and Laharl both agree that they share a lot in common; from being young-looking demons to having a Ragtag Bunch of Misfits that embarrass them from time to time.
    • Adell feels Zed is this to him, due to Zed's fists telling Adell a lot and learning that Zed fights to protect his family just as much as Adell does.
  • Blood Knight: If there is a promise of a good fight, he won't turn it down.
  • Breaking Old Trends: A strange example. In contrast to past protagonists, all of whom were humanoid and belonged to unique classes exclusive to them, Zed is a zombie demon — one of the generic class of demons players can create/recruit. He also looks radically different from his fellow zombies, being far more humanoid and lacking their trademark rotting flesh, claws and fangs. This may have to due with the fact that he used to be a Majin demon.
  • Brutal Honesty: He doesn't mince words, and he doesn't care about your feelings. Maybe.
  • Butt-Monkey: He's been defeated and killed by the God of Destruction an innumerable amount of times, one time just with a fart. And even before that, he's been everything from beaten to torn to shreds just for being a zombie. It's so bad that he can genuinely empathize with Prinnies.
  • Came Back Strong: How Super Reincarnation works. Every time Zed dies, he comes back stronger and stronger.
  • Contrasting Sequel Main Character: To Killia of Disgaea 5. Killia has a Sugar-and-Ice Personality while Zed is a Jerk with a Heart of Gold. Both of them specialize in hand-to-hand combat; however, Killia is a practitioner of Ultimate Demon Fist while Zed is a simple brawler. Neither look anywhere close to their actual age, but Killia is a muscular young man while Zed is a scrawny child. Both of their adventures revolve around traveling across multiple worlds to avenge a loved one who's Not Quite Dead. Zed was aware that Bieko was still alive as the God of Destruction the entire time, while Killia only learned of Lieze's survival at the very end of the game. Zed and Killia are both seemingly disproportionately powerful nobodies who were actually fearsome Demons legendary for their incredible power and psychotic rage back in the day. However, Killia's past as Tyrant Overlord Killidia is a great source of regret and angst for him, with his character arc revolving around coming to terms with it. Zed, on the other hand, doesn't remember his past as a Majin due to him dying and being revived as a Zombie, and even after learning this, he doesn't particularly care. One would think that Zed was purposely designed to be an anti-Killia.
  • Determinator: You can kill him, cook him, chop him, fry him… And he'll shrug all of that off and keep going. Nothing will stop him from defeating the God of Destruction.
  • Defrosting Ice King: Zed goes from a violent brute who's only obsessed with defeating the God of Destruction and not caring about who stands in his way to a more empathetic person who is willing to reach out and inspire his friends to challenge their fates and overcome their flaws to become better people.
  • Evil Laugh: Likes to laugh evilly at other people's expenses when he can.
  • Fashionable Asymmetry: Has one big horn, with hair bangs covering where the other horn should be.
  • From Nobody to Nightmare: Thanks to Super Reincarnation, he goes from being at the very bottom of the Netherworld's hierarchy to being strong enough to defeat the God of Destruction. Several times, in fact. Then he goes on to beat the shit out of the one who created them. Becomes played with upon the reveal that Zed was once a Majin demon, i.e. one of the most powerful race of demons to ever exist.
  • Gameplay and Story Integration: In past games, the Reincarnation system was a gameplay mechanic to strengthen any character who reached their limit once they hit max level. Zed uses a similar system in the form of Super Reincarnation, which reincarnates him in different worlds and boosts his strength. His Unique Evility also raises his damage output by 1% each time he reincarnates.
  • Gameplay and Story Segregation: Despite the above, story-mandated Super Reincarnations do not regress his level back to 1 nor he gains more stats.
  • Generic Doomsday Villain: He was this when he was alive, as his Majin self shows no personality or motivations beyond craving mindless destruction.
  • Goofy Print Underwear: Bieko once bought him a pair of bear-print underwear, though he doesn't wear them anymore. He wears elephant print instead.
  • The Greatest Story Never Told: While we do learn that Zed was a Majin who nearly destroyed the universe in ancient times back when he was alive, we never learn who or what originally killed him in the first place or how he wound up on the Netherworld that he and Bieko consider their home world.
  • Hot-Blooded: Similar to Adell, he's a zombie ruffian who loves a good brawl.
  • I Am Who?: Before he became a zombie, Zed was a legendary Majin who nearly destroyed the universe.
  • Idiot Hero: Hero is a loose term, given the franchise, but Zed is definitely an idiot; preferring to solve problems with his fists rather than think up a plan. He claims that he's no good at thinking, planning, and remembering things because of his "rotten brain" due to him being a zombie — and in comparison to other Disgaea protagonists, it's not hard to get his heart of gold to show. Subverted later when Bieko reveals to Zed that Cerberus was the one who turned her into a God of Destruction and Zed hatches a plan to reveal Cerberus as the culprit in front of everyone. He manages to outwit and corner Cerberus at Ivar's Darkest Assembly. There are also moments when Zed uses his rotten brain as an excuse to pretend that he understands less about a situation or person than he wants to let on.
  • In the Hood: He wears a red hoodie pulled over his head.
  • Immune to Fate: He develops the Evility to actively break time, allowing things that should be impossible to occur.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: He's rude, violent and stubborn as all get out, but he won't hesitate to put his life on the line to save another, even a lowly Prinny.
  • Lethal Chef: According to the Killia DLC, Zed cannot cook to save his un-life. He just mixes foodstuffs willy-nilly, without any pattern or reasoning. The DLC itself starts when Zed's latest attempt explodes because he threw in a particularly dangerous ingredient without thinking.
  • Magikarp Power: Both of his unique Evilities take a massive 200 Super Reincarnations to max out. At one point, Zed has 200% increased damage and 50% damage reduction.
  • No Guy Wants to Be Chased: He really doesn't appreciate Melodia's one-sided crush on him. Or so it seems at first.
  • Omnicidal Maniac: Prior to becoming a zombie, Zed was a Majin and perhaps one of the most violent ever known, seeing as how his rampage nearly destroyed the universe.
  • Screw Destiny: In the final chapters, he gains enough power to change the destinies of Releiza and various side-characters. This even becomes his second ultimate evility: Changer of Fate.
  • She Is Not My Girlfriend: Constantly denies he and Melodia are getting married. Nobody is convinced and act like it’s a done deal.
  • Shock and Awe: Zed's signature specials all utilize lightning, though gameplay-wise they're classified as wind magic.
  • Stating the Simple Solution: Zed has a tendency to tell people, after hearing their goals, to just do it. Like telling Misedor to just be the hero he wants to be and that he doesn’t need heroic lineage or a legendary weapon to do it.
  • Took a Level in Badass: Zed used to be like any other weak zombie, but after super reincarnating tens of thousands of times in his quest to defeat the God Of Destruction, he’s grown so strong that Overlord Ivar says he could easily become an Overlord if he wanted to.
  • Tsundere
    • Don't get the wrong idea. He's not helping his allies because he likes them or anything. He just needs them to defeat the God of Destruction. This is lampshaded due to people being able to be Super Reincarnated along with Zed and show up in the Fourth Dimensional Netherworld as long as he acknowledges them as an ally. At least at first, he sees his allies as tools to help him defeat the God of Destruction. But as he starts to become more friendlier and empathic, Zed starts to show how much he cares about them and is willing to stick his neck out for their sakes. Compared to previous examples, Zed might be one of the more complex tsunderes in the series due to his harsh upbringing as a zombie and constant deaths hardening his heart into that of a violent loner.
    • In particular, it's obvious from the start that he actually kind of likes Melodia right from the start, even if only because he's not used to people flirting with him despite the obvious insincerity.
  • Undignified Death: Many of his early deaths while fighting the God of Destruction were quite humiliating. Possibly his most undignified death was when he died after the God of Destruction farted in his general direction.
  • Used to Be a Sweet Kid: In Cerberus' words, he used to be a weak, kind-hearted zombie. Repeated usage of Super Reincarnation turned him rude and violent towards anyone that wasn't Bieko. Played with when it is revealed that Zed only became kind-hearted when he turned into a zombie. Before that, he was a Majin who nearly destroyed the universe.
  • Vague Age: Zed appears to be around the same age as Laharl, which put would him around the ballpark of 1300 years or so when he died. But since we don't know how long the gap was between his original death and subsequent resurrection as a zombie nor how long he's spent as a one, it's impossible to accurately date him. Plenair's DLC scenario even lists his age as "Unknown".
  • Was It All a Lie?: Zed’s hatred towards Cerberus mostly comes from believing he was family and thinking the happy times they spent together meant nothing to Cerberus. Cerberus implies it really wasn't, but Misual is so far past the Despair Event Horizon that he shakes it off and claims otherwise.
  • Yellow Lightning, Blue Lightning: Zed's signature specials involve him zapping opponents with lots of green lightning.

    Bieko

Bieko

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/generic_bieko_portrait.jpg
"Zed's sister"
Voiced by: Riko Kohara (JP); Michelle Marie (EN)
A kind-hearted zombie girl who lives with her brother Zed and Cerberus.
  • 11th-Hour Ranger: By the time she formally joins the party, there are only about two chapters left.
  • Affectionate Nickname: She calls Zed "Bubby". She also dubs Cerberus "Cerbie", calling him that even after his real name is revealed.
  • Ambiguously Related: Zed says that he and Bieko are Not Blood Siblings, they just both became zombies in the same graveyard. Though given the fact that Zed used to be a Majin when he was alive, and they both have the same kind of horns, they might be more related than they realize.
  • And I Must Scream: When in her God of Destruction form, she's fully conscious of all the pain she's causing, as well as how many times she's killed her dear "Bubby", both of which overwhelm her with feelings of guilt.
  • Beyond the Impossible: Bieko regaining control of herself after her second transformation into a God Of Destruction is said to be impossible by Misual and yet, Bieko did it.
  • Everyone's Baby Sister: The entire party is quite protective of her, even before most of them are properly introduced to her.
  • Forced Transformation: She was turned into a God of Destruction against her will and left to rampage to force Zed to use Super Reincarnation multiple times.
    • She gets turned back into one again, but thanks to The Power of Love, she is able to regain control and revert back to normal, shocking Misual.
  • Heroic Willpower: Bieko, after turning into a God Of Destruction again, manages to undo the transformation through The Power of Love and sheer force of will, surprising Misual, who thought it was impossible for a God of Destruction to regain control of themselves.
  • Loved by All: Anyone who hears about her is completely smitten. Even Etna thinks the same.
  • Mysterious Past: Unlike Zed, who Bieko was when she was alive or what she was like is never even hinted at. The only thing we can infer is that she died at an incredibly young age.
  • Morality Pet: To Zed, who will drop his fierce facade if she's brought up.
  • Nice Girl: Bieko is shown to be a total sweetheart who loves both Zed and Cerberus dearly, even wanting Zed to stop letting himself get hurt just to protect her. She's also shown to be nothing but pleasant towards Zed's party when she finally meets them, even encouraging Melodia's marriage fantasies and treating Ivar with respect. Her loving nature is pretty much the only reason Misual survives the events of the game, as she actively wants him to be part of her family again despite everything he did.
  • Protectorate: Zed is fiercely protective towards her. Half the reason he picks a fight with the God of Destruction is because they might hurt Bieko. After listening to Zed's full testimony, Ivar also ends up wanting to protect her, though the lack of a familial bond means he's Mistaken for Pedophile.
  • Posthumous Character: Around the halfway point, it's revealed that Bieko had actually been killed by the God of Destruction long before the game began. It's then Subverted with a subsequent reveal that she became the God of Destruction, played straight again when she reverts to her original form and her heart isn't beating at the end of everyone's testimony to Ivar, and then re-subverted because she shows up in Act 2, as zombie hearts aren't supposed to beat and she's just fine.
  • Shipper on Deck: She actively encourages Melodia's affections for Zed. When Melodia ends up smooching him near the end of the game, Bieko starts teasing Zed and tells him that, since they kissed, they have to get married.
  • Took a Level in Badass: After she becomes a God of Destruction a second time courtesy of Cerberus, she eventually gains control of herself, saves the party from another one, and declares that she will become strong like her brother. She then reverses the transformation by herself and joins the party, more than capable of fighting alongside them, and all while being able to perform some incredibly powerful attacks she likely couldn't do before. It may be possible she absorbed the power of a God of Destruction when she gained control of it, making her a Little Miss Badass.
  • Undead Child: Like Zed, she is a zombie. In the world of Disgaea, this isn't as debilitating as it sounds from horror films, but it does mean that both she and Zed are subject to cruel bullying by the town as part of being a lower caste.
  • Walking Spoiler: Her transformation into a God of Destruction is this, alongside the fact she's Not Quite Dead.

    Cerberus

Cerberus

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/disgaea_6_cerberus.png
"Companion"
Voiced by: Kouji Kawakami (JP); Jason Marnocha (EN)
A demonic dog who travels with Zed and co. He gained this form when Bieko saved his life by transplanting his brain into a dog. He claims to have once been a great Sage and is the inventor of Super Reincarnation. He's not lying, but he's leaving out that he was Misual — the Big Bad.
  • Animals Lack Attributes: Averted, as you can clearly see that he has a visible pair of testicles.
  • Becoming the Mask: While becoming the dog of two zombies was humiliating, Bieko realizes that he honestly came to enjoy it.
  • Big Bad: He is responsible for the creation of the God of Destruction, all in a plot to make Zed become a God of Destruction and destroy the universe.
  • Big Bad Friend: While he honestly likes most of the party members, Misual is so lost in his own misery that he believes the destruction of the universe is the only way to free people of fate.
  • Brain Transplant: Early on in the game, there's a skit where he claims that he back when he was alive, he used to be known as the "Super Sage". This turns out to be VERY important later on, when he regains the form of Super Sage Misual.
  • Contrasting Sequel Antagonist: To Super Hero Aurum and Void Dark, respectively.
  • Cynicism Catalyst: His repeated failure to save Releiza drove him to plot the entire universe's destruction.
  • Despair Event Horizon: After so many failed attempts using Super Reincarnation to save Releiza, he gave up on life and sought to destroy the universe.
  • Easily Forgiven: Bieko wants to harbor no ill will towards "Cerby" because she loved her life with Zed and Cerberus. Zed is much less forgiving, but given his soft spot for Bieko, he lets Cerberus back into his life after they defeat Misual. Cerberus is even confused himself, but accepts his life once again. Had Bieko not had such a kind heart and love for her family, Zed certainly would have just killed him (and even voices wanting to do so, only stopped because Bieko begs her "bubby" to forgive him).
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones: Releiza was the world to him, and having to kill her tens of thousands of times ended up breaking him and drove him to destroy everything. It's also abundantly obvious that despite what he puts them through, he cares about Zed and Bieko too and he values the time they spent together, with much of his belligerence towards them in Act 2 being the result of him trying to distance himself from them to carry out his plans.
  • The Fatalist: He legitimately does not think it's possible to alter time, to the point where the Final Boss fight is triggered when he absolutely refuses to believe that Zed has discovered how to break time, and eventually attacks to get him to shut up.
  • Gave Up Too Soon: If Zed's determination is anything to go by, it's possible that Misual could've eventually saved Releiza if he just kept trying until he eventually got it, but instead he gave into despair and started working on destroying the universe instead.
  • Info Dump: In the System Trailer, he explains how the game's mechanics and new system functions to the audience.
  • I Let Gwen Stacy Die: When asked how he originally invented Super Reincarnation, he states that it was a response to having to fight someone he loved. Unfortunately, no matter how much power he amassed, he could not save her. It turns out, as Zed proves, he merely gave up too soon.
  • Meaningful Name: "Cerberus" is the name of the three-headed dog who watches over the gates of the Underworld in Greek Mythology.
    • By the end of the game, there are three versions of Misual, to match Cerberus's three heads — the main timeline Misual who failed to save Releiza after tens of thousands of attempts; the secondary timeline Misual who was interrupted in this process by Zed and company saving Releiza; and the offscreen new timeline Misual, who is blissfully unaware that Releiza ever needed saving and presumably lives out his life peacefully with her.
  • Mirror Character: For Zed. Both of them used Super Reincarnation in an attempt to save the person they loved the most. The difference is that Zed never gave up, while Cerberus did, leading to him becoming a villain.
  • Not Now, Kiddo: He isn't even really trying to keep his identity and past a secret. He'll frequently start to bring up his past life and experiences only to be told to shut up because no one cares.
  • Pet the Dog: When trying to appeal to him to be a family with her and Zed again, Bieko will bring up how he taught her how to use magic. Misual's solemn reaction to this indicates that this was an honest act of kindness on his end and that he cares more about the two than he lets on.
  • Team Pet: Only according to Piyori. He does not like being called Prism Pup.
  • The Power of Hate: He advises Zed that the only way to defeat the God of Destruction is to put aside any sympathy he might have, even after learning of the God's past, and strike to kill. In Act 2, after being outed as a Treacherous Advisor and fleeing, he still advises Zed to focus on his hatred to further his plan of turning Zed into a God of Destruction; it's just now directed at himself.
  • Put Them All Out of My Misery: Fate won’t let him save his beloved Releiza, so he decides any universe that allows such a thing should not exist.
  • Took a Level in Jerkass: Misual's present, more cynical and condescending self is a far cry from the wise and polite gentleman he was when he first started trying to save Releiza. Even his past self is shocked by what a dick he becomes. It takes getting his ass handed to him for him to mellow out and apologize for his deeds.
  • Treacherous Advisor: His guidance throughout Act 1 was just a ploy to make Zed powerful and angry enough to become a new God of Destruction that could destroy the entire universe.
  • Used to Be a Sweet Kid: The second-timeline Misual that Zed meets in the past is downright nice, having not had tens of thousands of "Groundhog Day" Loop nightmares ending in him having to murder Releiza to break him. All three of them were the hero of the netherworld they were staying in, alongside Releiza.
  • Vocal Dissonance: He has an incredibly deep voice in both Japanese and English, contrasting with his small and cute appearance.
  • You Can't Fight Fate: He's a very stern believer of this, as trying to change the past will always lead to the same outcome. This is what drove him to a big Despair Event Horizon when all his attempts to save Releiza were all in vain.
  • Walking Spoiler: As the amount of spoiler tags above indicate, his role is more than just Zed's mentor.
  • Was It All a Lie?: He claims to have always hated being Zed and Bieko’s dog, finding the fate of a super sage as himself becoming the pet of two zombies to be most humiliating. As it turns out, however, Misual did in fact enjoy his time being a part of their family and is grateful to be given a second chance when he becomes Cerberus again.

    King Misedor

Misedor

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/misedor.png
"King of the Human World"
Voiced by: Michitake Kikuchi (JP); SungWon Cho (EN)
The incredibly wealthy king of the human world who travels with Zed and co. He believes money is the most powerful force of them all, but he also has a great admiration for heroes.
  • Bribing Your Way to Victory: This is his preferred method when not resorting to violence, befitting his belief that money can solve almost any problem. When he sees how powerful the God of Destruction is for himself, his first idea is to bribe it with as much money as he can throw at it rather than fight it head on.
    • One of his Evilities doubles the effect of bribing the Dark Assembly with HL.
  • Broken Aesop: His realization that money isn't everything he needs to use to become a worthy person is made a bit useless when he's still using it anyway. Even the others point out the hypocrisy of it all right after. At the very least, he uses his wealth to empower himself rather than bribing his way to victory.
  • Crime Fighting With Cash: Well, fighting demons mostly. Most of his attacks usually involve using his incredible wealth to attack his foes. This includes golden weapons, throwing stockpiles of treasure, crushing enemies with a golden statue of himself, and even having a golden colored satellite rain down a laser on his foes from space.
  • Hero-Worshipper: He loves heroes and heroism, and even when his kingdom’s hero Yarmada becomes a lazy cowardly freeloader living off Misedor’s wealth, he still believes in him and sees this as being a rough patch for the hero. In fact, Misedor wishes to be a hero himself, but believed it to be impossible due to being born royalty. It’s not until Zed convinces him to just be the hero he wants to be that Misedor finally becomes one.
  • Hidden Depths: Despite being obsessed with his own wealth, he genuinely wants to help people by becoming a hero in his own right.
  • Gold-Colored Superiority: Zigzagged. He's a king, wears gold armor, and is quite wealthy. However, he's also a coward who would strike a deal with the God of Destruction by attempting to bribe it than fight it head on. He eventually grows out of it, though.
  • Lovable Coward: He tries to bribe the God of Destruction to leave the human world alone, and quickly collapses into paroxysms of terror when in danger, but emphasis on "the human world" rather than "himself"; he's scared because he's absolutely convinced he cannot be a hero himself, and is more than happy to finance ways to save the planet.
  • Mr. Vice Guy: He's greedy and cowardly, but also genuinely The Good King; his issue is thinking he can bribe his way out of any issue.
  • Only Sane Man: Despite his Money Fetish, King Misedor finds himself in this situation.
  • Reluctant Ruler: Despite how much his royal position and wealth grants him, Misedor is rather frustrated that those two things are the only things that make him worth anything in the eyes of anyone else. To that end, he is quite envious of Yarmada for being a hero that people look up to and desires to be a hero in his own right to accomplish things that his fortune cannot grant him. Eventually, he finds a balance between being a hero while using his wealth to help him accomplish his goals and he becomes very good at it, with him being able to help out the party quite a bit just by using his money to help solve their problems.
  • Royalty Superpower: According to him, the royal bloodline is blessed with the power to resurrect heroes who fall in battle. Whether they want to come back or not.
  • Screw the Rules, I Have Money!: Pretty much his go-to solution to most of his problems is to throw money at them. One of the biggest examples comes when Piyori's show and her role as Prism Red is threatened to be canceled. Misedor goes so far as to bribe the screenwriters to change the script to give her a chance to defeat Ruffian Red so that she can try to save her show.
  • The Team Benefactor: Zig-zagged. He's only willing to throw chump change worth's money to deal with small problems and he'll offer to lend money but with huge interest. However, he's willing to spend a fortune for dire, important circumstances, like when he paid for a movie deal for Piyori's show when it was on the verge of being cancelled.
  • Tragic Dream: Believes his dream to be a hero is impossible, since he was born as royalty with no heroic lineage or a legendary weapon. It’s not until Zed convinces him to just be the hero he wants to be that he realizes his dream is possible.
  • With This Herring: Subverted when he attempts to do this to Zed, sending him off to fight the God of Destruction with nothing more than a stick and a 500 gold, but Zed isn't having it. Double-subverted when he convinces Zed to let him tag along by offering him the "Ultimate Equipment", and then triple subverted when it turns out the "Ultimate Equipment" is ultimate in name only, being scarcely better than your starting gear.
  • Verbal Tic: He'll stretch out random syllables in his dialogue.

    Melodia

Melodia

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/img_chara_melody.png
"Princess"
Voiced by: Kokoro Nanami (JP); Kelly Baskin (EN)
A demon princess from the Music World. She hopes one day a prince comes rescue her from the God of Destruction's rampage and give her the happy ending she's always wanted… and many princes lost their lives in trying to fulfill her selfish desires.
  • Abhorrent Admirer: Of a sort; her attempt to pretend to be a Damsel in Distress fails utterly on Zed, who has no time for any of it. This results in her falling for him instead, and the start of her character growth. Sadly for her, No Guy Wants to Be Chased, although it's also very obvious that he doth protest too much.
  • Aren't You Going to Ravish Me?: While she isn't really set on wanting Zed to be her prince, she's irritated that he refuses to so much as consider himself as such, which leads her to try and woo him out of pride. She eventually woos him out of a genuine want for him when her Character Development starts to kick in.
  • Becoming the Mask: Claims to be in love with Zed, but finds the thought of a zombie being her prince repulsive and only continues the act until Zed is able to defeat the God of Destruction. Then she starts falling for him for real…
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: At the start, although she tries to woo Zed over and calls him her prince, her internal thoughts show she really doesn't think much of him on account of his status as a zombie. It takes seeing his bull-headed determination to kill the God of Destruction and her Character Development for her to fall for him for real.
  • Damsel in Distress: She tries to play herself off as one, though considering she's presented as being one of the main party members and she's asking Prince no. 666, AKA Zed, to save her…
  • Dance Battler: Fittingly for a fairy tale princess, Melodia's unique skills show her happily dancing as she trounces her enemies. She also has a B in fists, which is likely meant to imply that she's striking her enemies with dance moves rather than martial arts.
  • The Dulcinea Effect: Has abused this with over 600 "princes." Zed is number 666.
  • Evil Twin: Has one in Naive, her Backup Twin who was raised unknown to her as a replacement should anything happen to her. Whereas Melodia is obsessed with Happy endings, Naive is obsessed with tragic ones. For bonus points, Naive becomes a God of Destruction while Melodia works with Zed and company to destroy the God(s) of Destruction and their creator.
  • An Ice Person: She naturally learns ice magic, and has access to an evility that cranks up her ice damage depending on how many allies are adjacent to her.
  • It's All About Me: Her biggest character flaw, to the point where Zed makes it a nickname for her. Melodia firmly believes that as a Princess, she has every right to a happy ending and that anything she does is justified for the sake of that, since her happy ending will mean everyone else gets one too. This bites her hard when she meets Naive, who reveals how much everyone despises her for her selfish nature. She grows out of this, though, and eventually realizes that everyone else has the right to find their own happy ending as well, becoming a much more caring person to the party and Naive.
  • Never My Fault: Refuses to take responsibility for the fates of her previous princes until her Character Development.
  • Meaningful Name: Melodia is a near homophone of "melody", a sequence of single notes in music sheets. Fitting for a character who likes to sing.
  • Ms. Fanservice: Her "dress" is pretty much just a leotard that struggles to cover her chest with a skirt that is barely hanging on.
  • Princess Classic: Deconstructed. Since she's basically a fairy tale princess, and since nearly all fairy tales end with the princess wedding her Prince Charming and live Happily Ever After, she thinks as long as she can achieve her happy ending, the universe will also share a happy ending with her. She uses this as a reason for being selfish, and she gets a reality check when Naive uses her logic against her, who believes her ideal ending of bringing misery to everyone is what they also want because that's her version of a "happy ending".
  • Self-Proclaimed Love Interest: As she'll tell anyone who'll listen, Zed is her Prince Charming who will live with her Happily Ever After. Inwardly, she's repelled at having a zombie for a prince, but him rejecting her would hurt her pride. Then she starts Becoming the Mask...
  • Verbal Tic: She'll often follow up a sentence with "la la la" before singing something that rhymes with her previous sentence.

    Piyori Nijino

Piyori Nijino

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/piyori_nijino.png
"Prism Ranger"
Voiced by: Fuuka Izumi (JP); Jeannie Tirado (EN)
The current Prism Red, leader of the Ultra Chroma Power Squad Prism Rangers from the TV show of the same name. The rest of the Prism Rangers disbanded from their repeated defeats by the God of Destruction, and she was the sole member of the Rangers before Zed and co. showed up in the TV World.
  • Affectionate Parody: Like her male predecessor from prior games, she's one to Super Sentai and by proxy their American counterparts.
  • Berserk Button: Do NOT insult her sense of Justice or suggest that she is playing hero. Likewise, do NOT insult her brother and what he stood for.
  • Breaking Old Trends: Twice over. First, her character page on the website lists her as being the very first female Prism Red, in contrast to all prior Reds being male. Second, unlike those Reds who were scouted by the show as replacements, she stepped up as the new Red after her brother's Heroic Sacrifice to save her.
  • Brutal Honesty: For better or worse, Piyori tends to say offensive things without meaning to be malicious. During Chapter 6, Piyori is so shocked by how coldly Melodia dismisses her previous princes that she refers to her as 'Prism Bitch'. It's enough to make even Zed do a double-take.
  • Combat Pragmatist: Once Zed tells her that winning means justice, Piyori starts adopting underhanded tricks in order to enforce the meaning of justice. This bites her in the ass later whenever she realizes that these methods alienate her position as Prism Red where she must always be heroic to be a good role model for children. She eventually loosen up on this rule, but it's implied that she'll still fight dirty from time to time by 'kicking someone in the gonads'.
  • Everything's Better with Rainbows: Comes with the territory of being a Prism Ranger. As such many of her attacks involve rainbow colored movements and weapons. She is even capable of filling in other colors by HERSELF in her Prism Dynamite attack despite being Red.
  • Evil Laugh: In the post-game, in a base conversation, she gets very obsessed with the idea of adding more people to the Prism Rangers' rank after Laharl, Flonne, and Etna join and laughs maniacally. Zed is very weirded out.
  • Refugee from TV Land: Her world exists inside of a TV show, which will apparently cease to exist if the show ends up getting cancelled.
  • Hot-Blooded: As a Red Ranger, she's required to be like this. She's very passionate about justice and will not hesitate to break out dramatic monologues out of nowhere to the surprise of the others.
  • Helmets Are Hardly Heroic: Previous Prism Ranger appearances had them in full costume, including helmets. Piyori, in contrast, goes without one. She wears one in the game's credits, but unlike the other Prism Rangers her face is still visible.
  • Large Ham: Like her brother, Piyori never fails to ham it up whenever it's her time in the spotlight. Expect explosive visual effects to happen right out of nowhere.
  • Might Makes Right: She takes to heart Zed’s lesson of justice is winning a bit too far. She gets to the point where she will do anything to win and it takes a What the Hell, Hero? moment from Ruffian Red and being cancelled for her to realize that kindness is just as important as power when it comes to justice.
  • The Nicknamer: She calls everyone else by their Prism moniker: "Prism Zed" for Zed, "Prism King" for Misedor, "Prism Princess" for Melodia, and so on.
  • No Inner Fourth Wall: Piyori and the rest of the characters from the show are acutely aware of their status as a TV show character. She knows she's being watched and is always in character for the good boys and girls watching at home. She's able to detect her show's ratings within the show, and outside of the TV world, she talks about bringing up merchandising ideas to the producers.
  • Sensual Spandex: Her costume clings tightly to her curvy body, especially around her bust and midsection.
  • Shout-Out: One of her move quotes is literally said in the same tune as the Power Rangers intro song.
    Piyori: Go-Go! Prism Rangeeers!
  • Sound-Effect Bleep: This is absolutely Censored for Comedy. Whenever Piyori calls Melodia, Prism Bitch, there's a bleep noise as if she's on TV. Justified because she's a TV show hero for children, so kids aren't allowed to hear her swear.
  • Statuesque Stunner: Judging by her cutscene portraits, she's the tallest female character in the main cast. And she is definitely a cute beauty.
  • The Power of Friendship: Speaks of this during her introduction in the Character Trailer. She even has an evilty that increases her stats the more party members are out in battle.
  • Steven Ulysses Perhero: A Bilingual Bonus example; the Prism Rangers are called "Nijiranger" in Japanese.
  • Stylistic Suck: Her skill animations are somewhat slower and lack the impact that the other characters have. In keeping with the Super Sentai parody, it's meant to give her animations a more low budget feel.

    Majolene

Majolene

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/fullmajolene.png
Voiced by: Ikumi Nakagami (JP); Cristina Vee (young), Mary Elizabeth McGlynn (old)(EN)
The 10,000 year-old Witch of the Abyss, headmaster of the Magimage School of Magic. After Zed and co. convinced her to use the Magical Wand of Transformation locked away by the Legendary Witch, she transformed into the much younger-looking Magical Girl Magnificent Majolene... irreversibly.
  • Affectionate Parody: She's one to the Magical Girl genre specifically the Cute Witch variant, not unlike the Prism Rangers being parodies of Super Sentai and by proxy their American counterparts.
  • Ascended Fangirl: Revealed that she was actually a huge fan of magical girls in her youth. Her favorite student, Lemisera, had embodied everything that she admired about magical girls. Which makes it all the more tragic whenever we learn that Lemisera was killed during her exam and Majolene was unable to save her.
  • Badass Teacher: She's the headmaster of a school dedicated to training mages, so naturally she fits the bill.
  • Failed a Spot Check: Not reading the warning that came from using the Magical Wand of Transformation could have avoided the embarrassment of becoming a Magical Girl rather than thinking it was going to make her into a Legendary Witch.
  • First-Episode Spoiler: Promotional material completely hid her 10,000 year-old appearance. Any savvy Disgaea player would be misled to believe her Magical Girl form is her real form, despite being a professor.
  • Fountain of Youth: Despite being older than Zed, her Magical Girl form gives her the appearance of a young girl… and is horrified that she can't change back.
  • Locked into Strangeness: She goes from being an elderly woman to a Magical Girl, and said transformation is permanent with no way to reverse it.
  • Miniature Senior Citizens: She's this before she adopts her magical girl form.
  • My Greatest Failure: A student of hers died after summoning a dragon too strong for her skill level to control. Majolene blames herself for being unable to save her student and wishes to go back in time to save her. She does.
  • Offscreen Moment of Awesome: When the group first meets Lemisera, they learn that changing the past timeline is impossible. However, when we meet her again, she's from a future timeline where Majolene figured out how to beat the time rules just like Zed did. Unfortunately for Majolene, we never get to see this triumph first-hand.
  • Older Than They Look: Once she becomes a Magical Girl, she goes from being an elderly woman to being a young girl. She is also quick to remind people that she's over ten thousand years old when her newfound young looks are commented on.
  • Only Sane Man: Shares this role with Misedor, though tends to take it more often than him, as she's largely the most well-rounded person of the main cast, compared to the idiotic, hyper-focused Zed and later Ivar, the money-obsessed Misedor, the In Love with Love Melodia and the justice-focused Piyori. Her only issue, as such, is being self-conscious about how she looks, but she's otherwise a reasonable, down-to-earth person with years and years of experience behind her who can keep everybody else on track.
  • Really 700 Years Old: True to her initial appearance, Majolne has been alive for over 10,000 years, which many people comment on.
  • Reluctant Fanservice Girl: After transforming into a younger magical girl form, Majolene becomes overly self-conscious about her appearances. This is even reflected in-game with her stats being cut in half. She grows out of this once she learns to embrace who she is and not worry about her appearances, but she still shows embarrassment from time-to-time and will drop everything if it means there's a slim chance she can get her old body back.
  • Pink Heroine: Is dressed almost entirely in pink, and is one of the main characters.

    Ivar

Ivar

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/generic_overlord_ivar_portrait.jpg
"Overlord"
Voiced by: Kazuma Horie (JP); Matt Shipman (EN)
The Overlord of a Netherworld who travels with Zed and co. after hearing the full story of their plight against the God of Destruction. Where he lacks in smarts, he makes up for his strength as an Overlord. He really adores Bieko.
  • A Father to His Men: He becomes infuriated at Misual after he uses his vassals to further his research on gods of destruction. So much so that he all but destroys his body and leaves Misual to have to have his brain transplanted into a dog by Bieko in order to stay alive.
  • Affably Evil: He initially seems to be a tyrannical blowhard whose brain probably looks like a black hole, but as the story goes on he turns out to be a pretty nice guy who treats his subordinates well. He even offers to give Zed and Bieko a life of luxury once their adventure comes to an end.
  • Asskicking Leads to Leadership: As with most Overlords, he's a powerful demon who rules over the Netherworld and has the power to back up his words.
  • Blood Knight: He is not afraid to back down from a challenge and has even expressed interest to fight the God of Destruction. He even had allowed Misual to create one in hopes of fighting it, but Misual crossed the line when he started using Ivar's vassals as test subjects while also taking advantage of Ivar's generosity, which earned Misual the boot.
  • Brainless Beauty: Everyone else in Zed's party agree while he's a rather impressive Overlord, he's dumb as a sack of bricks.
  • Butt-Monkey: Ivar gets no respect from anybody, and he's often the butt of a lot of jokes regarding his cluelessness or softness.
  • Cassandra Truth: When Zed barges into the Darkest Assembly and tells him he's killed the God of Destruction, Ivar refuses to believe it, thinking Zed is a weakling zombie, which leads to Zed recounting his tale to the Overlord.
  • Character Development: When Zed barges into the Darkest Assembly and recounts to Ivar how he killed the God of Destruction, Ivar becomes infuriated whenever he learns how Zed ended up dying, thinking he wasted their time. Around the halfway point of Act 1, he stops trying to have Zed executed and instead presses for him to get to the part where he killed the God of Destruction and avenged Bieko, perhaps coming around to believe Zed's claims after listening to his story up to this point.
  • Cool Big Bro: Essentially becomes this in a way to both Bieko and Zed after hearing their story and adventuring with them. Despite Zeds annoyance with his antics and obsessive attitude toward Bieko, Zed at least does show enough respect and trust toward Ivar to ask him to kill him and take care of her should he become a Majin. Likewise, Bieko states that she loves him just like she loves her "bubby", implying she may see him as either another brother, or at least an honorary uncle of sorts. Ivar himself does a good job looking after them both, doing his best to make up for his part in causing them the trouble they went through, and ensuring that they will both be alive and well to once again enjoy their lives together, even rewarding them and letting them have time to rest and recover after the final battle.
  • Crouching Moron, Hidden Badass: Ivar isn't very bright, but he's still an Overlord. Misual assuming he was harmless is the reason he’s stuck in the body of a dog.
  • Good All Along: He’s initially made out to be a villain. Even when it's revealed Cerberus is really responsible for the God of Destruction, Zed states that Ivar had research done on it in his castle. In response, he reveals that he just wanted to fight a god of destruction and actually opposed any amoral experiments to create one.
  • Mistaken for Pedophile: His affections for Bieko come off as creepy to the group, but it turns out that he has no romantic interest in her and only brotherly affection. The reasoning behind this is Ivar had a younger sister who died due to illness and has a weakness to young children because of his inability to save her.
  • My Greatest Failure: Misual takes advantage of Ivar's eagerness to fight the strongest God of Destruction and starts experimenting on his vassals within his underground lab. Ivar beats him to near death and lets him go which leads to Misual getting his brain transplanted by Bieko into a dog and kickstarting the rest of the story. Ivar realizes that if he had finished off Misual there, then the rest of the plot would've never happened.
  • Prone to Tears: Despite his arrogance, Ivar is a huge softie who starts crying over stories that make him emotional and is weak to verbal attacks. The party is amazed at how Ivar managed to become an Overlord in the first place.
  • Red Herring: Zed barging in on Ivar and recounting his battles with the God of Destruction implies Ivar had some role in its creation. Turns out he had nothing to do with it. Zed was actually trying to get a confession out of the real culprit, Cereberus.
  • Smug Super: He's self-centered and honestly believes the universe revolves around him, though his behavior is somewhat justified since he's a powerful Overlord in his own right.

Antagonists

    God of Destruction

???

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/drpg_god_of_destruction_artwork_1.png
The antagonist of Disgaea 6: Defiance of Destiny. A powerful entity with a single-minded purpose of destroying the universe.
  • And I Must Scream: The God of Destruction that gave Zed a lot of trouble turns out to be Bieko, who was unable to control herself but was concious every single time she injured and killed Zed against her will.
  • Almighty Idiot: Despite its incredible power, the God of Destruction seems to have no intelligence or driving motive beyond destruction. Cerberus even states that its sole purpose is to destroy anything and everything around it and nothing else. This is entirely intentional — Misual doesn't want his weapons against the universe to have enough thought to consider a Heel–Face Turn, after all.
  • The Battle Didn't Count: Up until Episode 10, no matter how many times Zed brings its HP down to zero, it will always proceed to kill him in the following cutscene.
  • Diabolus ex Machina: It always seems to stalk Zed no matter where he goes, even if he goes to the past through Super Reincarnation. Perhaps justified, since the first God of Destruction was Bieko and she was drawn to Zed.
  • Dramatic Unmask: Upon his defeat, he is revealed to be Bieko. Then it's later revealed the God of Destruction is not a single being, but multiple people who have been modified with Majin DNA.
  • The Dreaded: Promotional materials have nearly every character shown to be rather fearful of him, including Ivar.
  • Everyone Calls Him "Barkeep": He is only referred to by his title, even after his true name is revealed. Justified, in that "God of Destruction" is a title. A shared one.
  • Foreshadowing: At some point in the game, the God of Destruction gains a second skill called God's Wrath that looks identical to Zed's Lightning Strike. It hints at Zed's true identity as the legendary Majin.
  • Me's a Crowd: The final two chapters involve fighting multiple gods at once in a single battle.
  • Names to Run Away from Really Fast: Does God of Destruction sound friendly to you?
  • Samus Is a Girl: The male God of Destruction seen throughout the story turns out to be the very unquestionably female Bieko. Among the Gods of Destruction seen in Act 2, Naive turns into one as well.
  • Super-Soldier: They are demons who Misual has infused with Maijin DNA to serve as his weapons against existence.
  • This Was His True Form: When he's finally defeated in Episode 10, he transforms back to his original form of Bieko.
  • Tragic Monster: Once you find out who the God of Destruction is, it puts all subsequent fights against it into a much darker and sadder light.
  • Two Aliases, One Character: When the God of Destruction is defeated, Bieko is revealed to be the entity's true identity, only for later chapters to reveal that the God of Destruction is not a single person, but rather multiple demons who have been modified with Majin DNA.
  • Uniqueness Decay: In the second Act of the game, Gods of Destruction become more commonplace, with less powerful base characters being used to create them, with the others noting how easy it's becoming as a result.

    Hero Yarmada

Hero Yarmada

The previous hero who fought the God of Destruction at King Misedor's behest. Following numerous defeats at the God of Destruction's hands, he becomes a Self-Sequestered Domicile Defender who would rather live a peaceful life freeloading off the king's vast riches than fight it again.
  • Bait-and-Switch: When players first hear his voice, you would assume his hostility against Zed and Misedor is to return the king to "the proper path". When he shows himself, his hostility is later revealed to be wanting to keep Misedor from getting himself killed by the God of Destruction and continue his luxurious lifestyle.
  • Fallen Hero: He was the previous Hero before King Misedor's royal ability resonated with Zed's Super Reincarnation and brought the latter to the Human World. He's since become a lazy good-for-nothing content with being little more than a petty freeloader.
  • A Fate Worse Than Death: Subverted at first. He doesn't mind King Misedor's ability to resurrect him every time he dies, since it means he can freely enjoy a life of luxury and serenity. It gets played straight when Zed decides to use him as a constant source of EXP by killing him over and over again. Whenever he dies, he can only bemoan his newfound fate.
Hero Yarmada: I knew I should have stayed home!
  • Forced Transformation: Gets turned into a God of Destruction by Misual. He is saved, though.
  • Gameplay and Story Integration: Yarmada has a Resurrection/Death Loop on him, hence why you always find him in his map…’and he gives out a massive amount of EXP for killing, which Zed quickly realizes makes him great for Level Grinding, and largely guilt-free to kill over and over. It also passes over to his God of Destruction battle.
  • Heel Realization: Yarmada realizes how far he’s fallen as a hero late in the game and resolves himself to be the hero Misedor always believed he was.
  • Klingon Promotion: At some point after King Misedor got dragged along by Zed's Super Reincarnation, he took over the Human World and became King Yarmada, where he quickly began earning the ire of the populace by overtaxing them to hell and back. To Misedor's misfortune, said populace erroneously hunts him down when he comes back.
  • Resurrection/Death Loop: Thanks to Misedor's royal bloodline ability, Yarmada can continue to resurrect no matter how many times he dies. Unfortunately, each subsequent death and resurrection affects his personality, as by the time Zed encounters him, he's become a "Self-Sequestered Domicile Defender" who would rather mooch off the king's riches than fight the God of Destruction.
  • Video Game Cruelty Potential: And In-Universe to boot. Yarmada is the only enemy to always appear on the map you fight him in, and you can kill him as many times as you want thanks to Misedor's power resurrecting him. In other words, he's an excellent source for grinding EXP, which Zed ruthlessly exploits.

    Naive (Unmarked Spoilers)

Naive

Melodia's younger twin sister, who she was unaware of until Zed Super Reincarnates into the Musical World a second time. When Melodia returns to the Musical World, Naive attempts to break her spirit in the hopes of achieving the tragic ending she yearns for.
  • Ax-Crazy: Naive is more than willing to burn everything to have her tragic endings.
  • Evil Counterpart: On top of being Melodia's Evil Twin, she uses the same moveset as Melodia herself, wears a black dress, and is obsessed with bitter, tragic endings rather than happy ones.
  • Foil: Literally the opposite of Melodia in regards to happy endings, though she's just as negative and depressive, if not more so.
  • Forced Transformation: Unlike previous victims, however, she herself turns into a God of Destruction on her own will in order to cause a tragic ending. Fortunately for the group, they beat her back to normal.
  • Palette Swap: She essentially looks like Melodia with blonde hair and a black dress.
  • Tragedy: She's obsessed with these sorts of endings, and wants to ensure everyone in her Netherworld gets one, herself included.
  • Verbal Tic: Like her older sister, she tends to fall into songs by starting with a "La La La."

    Underling/Ruffian Red

Underling/Ruffian Red

One of the minions of an evil organization that opposes the Prism Rangers. However, upon seeing Piyori stray away from the path of justice her brother upheld, he creates the Vile Villiany Super Squad Ruffian Rangers to replace the Prism Rangers, taking his place as the squad's leader, Ruffian Red.
  • Blackmail: He is coerced to assist Misual and by extension Naive to fight Zed and company unless the children they kidnapped die.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: Underling is a bad guy, yes, but as was stated previously, his and Piyori's netherworld exists within a TV show, so being a bad guy is part of his job description. As such, he is very dismayed when he sees that Piyori, the current Prism Red, is not acting how a proper hero should and becomes disgusted when he learns she's totally willing to use a weapon that would cause cataclysmic destruction, despite the fact that she intended to use it on the God of Destruction.
  • Forced Transformation: He gets turned into a God of Destruction by Naive. Luckily, he is saved.
  • Mauve Shirt: He was once a mere evil underling for an evil organization. Disappointed in Piyori for taking a Might Makes Right stance, he takes up the name Ruffian Red to fulfill what Piyori couldn't.
  • Minion with an F in Evil: Despite working for an evil organization, the underling shows very little in terms of villainy and is even a big fan of Piyori's brother.
  • The Psycho Rangers: Played with. The Ruffian Rangers are the Evil Counterpart of the Prism Rangers, though this is due to Piyori taking the Prism Rangers in a less-than-ideal heroic stance through pragmatic and dirty tactics.

Others

    Lemisera

Lemisera

Majolene's favorite student at the Magimage School of Magic, who died by being eaten by a powerful dragon she summoned and couldn't control.
  • Cute Clumsy Girl: Noted by Majolene as a clumsy student who couldn't pass magic tests, but what she lacked in skill, she made up with passion.
  • Killed Off for Real: Despite the group's efforts to save her from getting eaten by her dragon, it revives and eats her.
    • This later gets averted when a future Lemisera performs a Big Damn Heroes and reveals that present-time Majolene will save her student in the past after the Final Boss is defeated.
  • You Can't Fight Fate: The team manages to save her from being eaten by killing the dragon, but then it suddenly revives and eats her up while they're celebrating.
  • "Well Done, Son" Guy: All she wants is to live up to Majolene's high expectations of her. This leads to her trying to summon a Great Dragon for her summoning exam, which she can't control, leading to her death.

    The Legendary Witch (Unmarked Spoilers

Releiza

Voiced by: Suzie Yeung (EN)
A legendary spellcaster that Majolene reveres.
  • Deus ex Machina: Her spirit makes contact with Zed the moment he's about to kill God of Destruction Bieko, telling him how to save her and alluding to the true mastermind.
  • Dramatic Irony: She was forced to take the Majin DNA to save the town from demons trying to get to said Majin DNA. Unfortunately, she couldn't control the power overdose and went berserk, leading to her death at Misual's hands.
  • The Lost Lenore: She's the Super Sage Misual's beloved, who he was unable to save and forced to kill no matter how hard he tried.
  • Walking Spoiler: While she's mentioned briefly in Act 1, it's impossible to discuss her in any detail without bringing up the events of Act 2.
