Members of the DreamSMP

    Wilbur Soot
First appearance: BDAM Chapter 1, "The Dreams"
The founder of L'Manberg and the main protagonist of the first installment.
  • Adaptational Dumbass: In canon, the worst one could say about Wilbur's leadership of L'Manburg following the Revolution is that he's too complacent with the status quo and he's fairly competent at governing the country. Here, Wilbur's arrogance, paranoia, and his often impulsive behavior means he's very prone to making rash decisions that have serious consequences for him in the long run, which only worsens as he undergoes Sanity Slippage later on.
  • Adaptational Jerkass: In canon, while Wilbur was always flawed and rather troubled, prior to his Sanity Slippage he was almost always rather kind and personable, especially to his friends. Here, Wilbur is a selfish, paranoid, and rather spiteful man from the get go; he's treats the people close to him like dirt, he constantly ignores any of his own faults or wake-up calls that he needs to change his behavior, and he often shows an astounding callousness to the people around him.
  • Amnesiac Hero: He has forgotten his past lives on SMPLive and SMPEarth, with memories of those times returning in the form of dreams. He finally recovers them when Techno explains the events of SMPLive to him, only to lose them again as a Spirit.
  • Anti-Hero: Wilbur is an idealistic man who just wants to protect L'Manburg and its citizens, but he's hindered by his own selfishness, callousness, and paranoia.
  • Fatal Flaw:
    • His selfishness and arrogance very often tends to screw him over, especially during the election when it leads to him directly and indirectly setting up the circumstances for his own exile.
    • His paranoia. It leads to him betraying Schlatt in SMPLive during "The Truth" arc which causes him a lot of grief in the long run.
  • Futureshadowing: Plenty of Wilbur's flashback memories to SMPLive are further elaborated on during "The Truth" arc, which gives the scenes more context.
  • Given Name Reveal: Schlatt does this to Wilbur during the elections.
  • Heel Realization: During the presidential debate, Wilbur suddenly realizes that Fundy isn't running to follow in Wilbur's footsteps or make him proud but instead to get his attention, and that he's been a terrible and neglectful father to him. After the two get into an argument over it when Wilbur tries to talk to him about it, he decides it can wait until after the election because Tommy is more important right now.
  • I Have Many Names: The final chapter of BDAM lists out his titles.
  • Ignored Epiphany: After realizing he's been a terrible father to Fundy and Fundy outright screams at him for caring more about Tommy than his own son, Wilbur immediately concludes that Fundy needs space and starts focusing more in the election instead.
  • Improperly Paranoid: One of Wilbur's greatest flaws is his paranoia. It's what leads to him betraying Schlatt, when he becomes convinced Schlatt hates him and is going to sell him out to the Lunch Club.
  • It's All My Fault: Wilbur heaps guilt upon himself whenever he realizes he's screwed up. Of course, it takes a lot for Wilbur to recognize he's done something wrong, and sometimes he won't act on his guilt.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold/Jerkass: He alternates between the two. He's well-meaning and cares deeply about his friends, but he's deeply neglectful towards Fundy and his rash nature often leads to him kicking the dog. He's also somewhat sketchy when it comes to power, having appointed both himself and Tommy to their positions with no democratic input, and rather selfish and callous. He switches mostly to the latter during his mental spiral.
  • Kick the Dog:
    • In BDAM Chapter 21, "The Argument", he gives Tommy a brutal "The Reason You Suck" Speech blaming him for everything that's gone wrong in Wilbur's life after Tommy calls him out on hiding the details of his dreams from him. It's justified, as Wilbur admits it was more a result of the unimaginable stress he's under from the War for Independence and dealing with his condition than anything else.
    • He's the deciding vote in banishing Schlatt, both because he's (admittedly rightfully) paranoid about Schlatt's true motives and because he's scared of facing his past, especially since Schlatt had just resolved to abandon his plans for revenge before the vote. Of course, when Dream decides to banish Schlatt to the Nether, Wilbur immediately threatens to start another war if he goes through with it.
  • Kick the Morality Pet: Pretty much any of the times he insults Tommy qualifies, which only increases as he undergoes Sanity Slippage.
  • Lack of Empathy: Downplayed. He doesn't lack empathy, but he constantly fails to think about other people's feelings and is generally too wrapped up in himself to think about how his actions affect the people around him.
  • Meaningful Rename: He changes his name during his SMPLive days to distance himself from Phil, who had been exiled after taking the fall for the crimes he and Schlatt had committed.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: He heavily regrets babying his son, which drives a wedge between the two when Fundy renounces his parentage in front of Schlatt.
  • My Greatest Failure: As characteristic of an Ancestor carrying a fox trait. In Wilbur's case, it's choosing to 'exile' his best friend and adopted brother in SMPLive through a Miscarriage of Justice.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: Wilbur is always making idiotic and rash decisions that screw up over in the long run.
  • Parental Neglect: He treats Fundy like a child even when the latter has become a grown adult. This backfires on him when Fundy renounces him and considers joining Schlatt, and third parties can very clearly see that his parenting skills are much to be desired. By the time the Festival rolls around, he recognizes this but believes there is no way to fix his past mistakes.
  • Slowly Slipping Into Evil: Wilbur starts off as a genuinely well-meaning man, who is hampered by his own selfishness, short temper, and paranoia which makes him pretty unpleasant to be around. As he goes through a Trauma Conga Line after Schlatt exiles him that culminates in him realizing that he's a Source, who are often perceived to be Always Chaotic Evil, an already unstable Wilbur snaps and decides to embrace what he sees as his true nature.
  • Then Let Me Be Evil: Wilbur's spiral during the Pogtopia arc is caused by this thought process, though for different reasons than canon.
Wilbur knew it was there – Deep inside of him, building up for years. He was a Source – From the day he was born, from the day he entered the Nether, he was marked as a create of chaos, pain, suffering and nothing else. He was meant to destroy – Anything he created, anything he made, anything he thought he deserved to have would fall apart and escape him eventually. But why weep and worry over something he couldn't control it – Why not embrace it? Why not embrace the pain, why not embrace the chaos, why not allow that twisted energy to overtake him and turn him into the harbinger of destruction he had been chosen to be?
Wilbur Soot would embrace everything he was meant to be from day one.
'Then let's be the bad guys.'.
  • Weather Manipulation: Wilbur, being a Source, had the ability to control the weather, most notably making it rain so much that it caused a flood back on SMPLive...

    TommyInnit
First appearance: BDAM Chapter 1, "The Dreams"

  • Adaptational Nice Guy: In canon, Tommy started off as the most irascible and destructive member of L'Manburg prior to undergoing Character Development and often had to be held back by the more diplomatic and polite Wilbur. Here, while Tommy is fairly abrasive, he's much more openly compassionate and friendly from the get-go and his habit of vandalizing the rest of the server has been Adapted Out for the most part. At some points, he comes off as more emotionally aware and moral than Wilbur even prior to the latter's Sanity Slippage.
  • Amnesiac Hero: Like Wilbur, he has forgotten his past life on SMPEarth, with memories of those times returning in the form of dreams.
  • Animal Motifs: Raccoons. As a raccoon Hybrid, he is likely "overwhelmed by a great pain, whether it be physical, mental, or perhaps even both"... which makes it rather unsurprising that his traits start to develop during his Exile.
  • Child Soldiers: In this fic, Tommy is 14 when the L'Manberg War for Independence breaks out.
  • Cosmic Plaything: Tommy is one of the most moral and compassionate members of the Dream SMP, which makes it all the more unfair that increasing amounts of trauma are constantly healed onto him.
  • Driven to Suicide:
    • Discussed in a conversation with Wilbur on SMPEarth in BHAV Chapter 58, "The Exile – Act 4 (Part 1)", which ends up being prime foreshadowing material if we are going by the canonical plotline...
    • Which it is for Chapter 95, "The Final Straw", where he heads for the cliffs after Dream blows up his secret stash.
After some thinking, the boy got up. There really wasn't much else he could think to do, right now. For so long, this little stash of items had been his one last bit of control. The last thing he thought he could still hang onto, the singular element of his life that wasn't thrown into disarray by that masked piece of shit that had put him here. And now... It was gone. Just like everything else that he had once controlled in his life, it was taken away from him by force and left him with nothing. Empty, broken, without any way out.
Well, apart from one. There was always one more way out. But he never thought it would seem so appealing... Tommy got to his feet, giving what had once been his entire life a short glance. And then...
He headed for the cliffs. It really didn't feel like he had anywhere else he could go. Not anymore.
  • Foreshadowing: In BHAV Chapter 51, "The Exile – Act 3 (Part 1)", Tommy thinks that he's starting to Go Mad from the Isolation and would be starting to talk to the seagulls hanging out near Logstedshire in the next few days. Later the same chapter, he starts doing exactly that and befriends one of them.
  • Friend to All Living Things: Tommy is always friendly with animals and even manages to befriend a seagull while in exile, who he names Clementine. Unfortunately, Dream catches on and murders the bird, before cooking it into a stew that he feeds to Tommy while lying that the bird probably ran away out of hatred for him.
  • Heroic Self-Deprecation: Especially prominent in BHAV — his trauma and mental health problems probably contributed to that.
  • Hide Your Otherness: Throughout his Exile, he hides his raccoon ears under a scarf, mainly to prevent Dream from knowing about them.
  • Homeless Pigeon Person: An odd variation. In BHAV Chapter 51, "The Exile – Act 3 (Part 1)", Tommy befriends a small seagull in Exile, and names her "Clementine".
  • Hot-Blooded: Most notably seen during the first half of the Vice-Presidential Debate during the Election arc.
  • It's All My Fault: In BHAV, Tommy blames himself for drifting apart with Tubbo while having severe undiagnosed mental health problems; and later in Exile, he straight-up starts blaming himself for being Exiled.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Heavily downplayed. Tommy is somewhat abrasive and initially reckless, but he's a genuinely compassionate and kind person with a strong sense of morals who does his best to serve as Wilbur's moral compass.
  • Little Bit Beastly: In BHAV Chapter 60, "The Exile – Act 4 (Part 3)", Tommy starts developing raccoon traits, starting with ears and eventually a tail.
  • Love Martyr: Of the platonic variant. By BHAV Chapter 70, Tommy has started showing signs of Stockholm Syndrome towards Dream. Drista calls him out on it.
“...He hasn't hurt me, okay?” Tommy insisted, but this time, something in his voice definitely seemed more stern. “He hasn't. Physically. He'd... I don't think he would do that. He's not like that,” and here, the conviction in his voice slowly slipped away. “But... He's been... God, he's been horrible, sometimes. The way he talks to me. The way he looks at me... It makes me feel....”
“Worthless?” the girl filled in, feeling as if she knew exactly how her friend felt. “Like you're less than him? Like he's somehow better, like he's worth more? Yeah. I've been there.”
“...It's... I'm sure he doesn't mean it,” the boy carried on, his confidence from earlier fading completely. “He's not a bad person, he helps me–”
“Why are you so set on defending him?”
“He's the only person who's cared for me out here.”
“Or is he the only one he's let you see?”
“That's... No, listen– You've got it all wrong, alright?”
  • Morality Pet: He tries to be this for Wilbur and Techno. It doesn't work, as both Dream's influence and the pair's Sanity Slippage is just too much for one scared kid to break them out of, and Tommy's failure to prevent them from Slowly Slipping Into Evil deeply traumatizes him.
  • Only Sane Man: He serves as this for Pogtopia. While Techno and Wilbur are violent and clearly unstable and Dream is actively encouraging their worst impulses, Tommy desperately tries to play damage control by encouraging them to reach out to their allies and trying to convince them to abandon their plan to blow up L'Manburg.
  • Parental Abandonment: In the world of SMPEarth, Tommy's parents apparently dropped him off to be raised by Villagers, for unknown reasons.
  • Rascally Raccoon: Like in canon, Tommy has a mischievous streak a mile wide in the BDAM-universe; he is revealed to be a raccoon Hybrid in BHAV Chapter 60... though that has nothing to do with his personality traits.
  • Seriously Scruffy: As revealed through his Description in the Mirror in BHAV Chapter 60, Tommy doesn't really take care of his appearance in Exile.
He looked in the mirror once more. Dry blood on his hair, his head, his face. Wounds he got from the rocks by the beach that morning and bruises from all those other near-drowning experiences that came before. His hair was messy, unkept, not cut ever since he first tried to do it all that time ago. There was still a strand of it to the right side of his head that was longer than the rest of it – He hadn't even evened it out, considering the scar on the back of his neck just reminded him of everything that happened the last time he tried to change anything about his hair. Bags under his eyes, pale skin, dirty, ripped clothes... God, he was a mess. He just looked worse and worse with each day. But, at the very least... Now he had something new.
  • Sour Outside, Sad Inside: In BHAV, he lashes out a lot on those who are concerned for him, yet also has a lot of Heroic Self-Deprecation. It's explained by the author to be because of undiagnosed depression and likely PTSD as well.
  • Tragic Keepsake: Tommy kept Wilbur's coat after he died. Dream ends up blowing it up when he finds Tommy's 'secret stash of items'.
  • Trauma Conga Line: His Exile from New L'Manberg was, as per canon, incredibly painful and traumatic. Chapter 24 of The Captain's Journals further indicates that his development of raccoon Hybrid traits is likely to cope and "channel the [physical and/or mental] pain into something more focused and easier to manage".
  • "Well Done, Son" Guy: To Wilbur, most prominently seen at the end of Chapter 79 of BDAM, "The Duel (Part 1)".
'Are you okay, Tommy? You seem a little out of it.'.
Why does he have to be so good at knowing when something's wrong?
    'Huh? What?.'.
He can't know. I want him to be proud. I have to make him proud.
    'Everything's okay.'.
I don't want him to be disappointed in me.
I've already messed up so much.
I don't want him to hate me more.

    'I'm fine.'.

    Fundy
First appearance: BDAM Chapter 2, "The Realizations"

  • Friend-or-Idol Decision: He has one in the Manberg era, after Schlatt acts as a mentor figure towards him and gives him advice, which causes Fundy to doubt whether to continue being a spy against Manberg or to dedicate himself to it. It takes Tubbo's 'death' at the Manberg Festival to snap him out of it.
The mirror in the corner of his room had become something that mocked him rather than reflected him – Who he was seeing there was not Fundy. That perfect, clean suit, the tie that had been fixed up by Schlatt, and of course, that look in his eyes. That look of someone who was considering doing things he had never considered before – All because of the words of a single man. How had the President managed to get into his head as he did? Was it wrong? Should he have tried to fight it? Should he have tried to resist it? But... Was it not good? Finally having someone who cared? Finally having someone who bothered? Someone who, unlike his father actually treated him like a person?
Was being on Schlatt's side truly the “evil” choice?
  • Little Bit Beastly: Fundy is a Hybrid with fox ears, teeth and a tail, which is attributed to his father, Wilbur, being an Ancestor.
  • Long-Range Fighter: In BHAV Chapter 100, "The Hog Hunt (Part 4)", while analyzing the Butcher Army and thinking of tactics to counter them, Techno notes that Fundy specializes in ranged combat.
Fundy wasn't good in personal, up-close combat, which Techno remembered back from the revolution. He had a bow strapped to his back — [h]is dominant weapon. He would no doubt switch to it the moment he made some distance between himself and the fight, so keeping him close would be smart.
  • The Mole: During the Schlatt administration, he fights from the inside to return L'Manberg to its former glory.
  • Tell Me About My Father: In Chapter 173 of BDAM, "The Funeral (Part 1)", Fundy asks his grandfather, Phil, about his Missing Mom, Sally.
  • "Well Done, Son" Guy: His desire for an authority figure's approval and appreciation has caused him a moral dilemma at least once.
  • You're Not My Father: In Chapter 77 of BDAM, "The Visitor (Part 3)", Fundy claims that Wilbur just happened to be the founder of a nation that he was part of, when Schlatt asked him about his relationship with Wilbur. In actuality, the two are father and son, and this conversation took place in front of Wilbur... who was hit hard by this renouncement.

    Dream
First appearance: BDAM Chapter 2, "The Realizations"

  • Adaptational Jerkass: In canon, his grudge against Tommy stemmed from the conflict the two had during the Disc Wars, which was an understandable reaction, even if it by no means justified or excused Dream's subsequent quest to ruin his life. Here, his grudge seems to stem from Tommy trying to stop him from encouraging Wilbur and Techno's mental spirals to get them to destroy L'Manberg, which makes what he does to Tommy during the Exile Arc all the more petty and horrific.
  • Bad People Abuse Animals: On the first day of Tommy's exile, Dream shoots the crow that Philza sent to keep an eye on his son.
  • Bait the Dog: He initially seems to be bonding with Tommy during his team-up with Pogtopia. Dream very quickly puts a stop to this when he bluntly tells Tommy he doesn't give a damn about him and only really sees him as a useful asset, and even this is only circumstantial.
  • Blood Knight: During a talk with Tommy, Dream tells him that he's come to see conflict as necessary for the DreamSMP to survive, as it prevents stagnation, and gleefully declares that he intends to use the music discs to engineer more of it down the line.
  • The Bully: Should anything even mildly inconvenience him, Dream will use immediately use violence to cow people into giving him what he wants.
  • Composite Character: He is a combination of the Dream in the main series and Cornelius from "The Village That Went Mad".
  • Dark and Troubled Past: Dream once had two people that he considered the world, but they eventually died. The author later clarifies that the two people in question were Catboy and Robin from "The Village That Went Mad", which leads to two issues — 1) Dream (or Cornelius) somehow survived the massacre, and 2) he doesn't know that Catboy, now Corpse, also survived.
  • Demonic Possession: He serves as his Dreamon sister's Host, but by BHAV, her influence on him is fading as his mind becomes more resistant to possession.
  • Disproportionate Retribution: After both the DreamSMP and L'Manberg vote to have Schlatt banished, Dream suddenly changes it from banishing him from the cities to sending him back to the Nether, all because he tried to steal the music discs. Admittedly, there is a pragmatic edge to it, as Dream is terrified of anything that comes from the Nether causing harm to his city, but it's still really petty.
  • Drunk with Power: Dream used to be a benevolent leader, but his power gradually went to his head, and it often makes him indulge in pointless cruelty so that he can showcase it.
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones:
    • He genuinely cares about Sapnap and George, to the point of letting L'Manberg get its independence so that he could keep their friendship. Dream starts to push them both away as he gradually stops caring about other people altogether; by the end of BDAM, he only sees George as a pawn and nothing else, and doesn't give a damn that Sapnap's abandoned him.
    • Naturally, there's also his sister, Drista, but this becomes subverted by the Exile Arc rolls around, as by that point, he knows that Drista is experiencing Cessation of Existence due to his own growing resistance against possessions, but he is completely unconcerned by it.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: He's horrified of the danger the Nether Portal poses to the DreamSMP and immediately takes measures to prevent it. When Schlatt arrives through it, he immediately forms an Enemy Mine with L'Manburg against the potential threat. Though Schlatt does somewhat win him over by admitting to being another runaway like the rest of the Dream SMP's residents, it quickly devolves into another moment of Dream's pettiness when he orders him banished because he tried to take the music discs from Dream.
  • Evil Is Petty: Much of Dream's most monstrous actions stem from him punishing anyone who even mildly inconveniences him in the most horrific way possible, simply because his massive ego means that he overreacts to even the mildest of slights.
  • Evil Former Friend: To Sapnap and George.
'Everything I ever did was for you two. Everything I ever sacrificed was to keep us together. I just want things to come back to how they were. I just want us to be... One family again. Do you understand that?', Dream whispered, gripping onto Sapnap's shirt with all his strength.
    '...If you wanted that you'd have stopped a long time ago.', the man responded, forcing his hand away. He waited for George to catch up with him, stepping out the door. Eret hid himself to the side, disappearing behind one of the pillars that kept the above ceiling stable. Sapnap looked back;
'Goodbye Dream. I hope you find what you're looking for.'.
  • The Exile: After his aiding of Technoblade to escape from his execution by L'Manberg's Butcher Army, Eret publicly revokes Dream's citizenship to the DreamSMP, leaving him as effectively The Stateless.
  • Fallen Hero: It's repeatedly shown that Dream used to be a genuinely good person who founded the DreamSMP as a home for the runaways and outcasts of the world, only to become increasingly cruel as the result of a gradual power high. There are several signs of his previous better nature, but he's just much more prone to acts of unnecessary cruelty and his redeeming qualities gradually vanish.
  • Hate Sink: Not at first, but by BHAV, Dream is a despicable, toxic manipulator who only cares about himself and no longer recognizes the people around him as anything more than assets. His horrific abuse of Tommy makes him all the more loathsome.
  • Horrifying the Horror: He's absolutely horrified at the possibility the Ender Dragon is real and could be unleashed on the DreamSMP.
  • Hypocrite: After catching Tommy about to commit suicide in BHAV Chapter 78, "The Exile – Act 6 (Part 1)", he accuses Tommy of being selfish and only caring about himself, which is pretty rich coming from Dream.
  • It's All About Me: By the time Tommy was in Exile, Dream had started to become disconnected from his attachments, only caring for himself and seeing everything and everyone around him as assets.
Drista: (to Tommy) He knows what he's doing [to me], but he doesn't care. And you've seen this too. You keep saying he doesn't hurt you, that he's your friend. But you've seen it. He doesn't care about anyone any more. He's letting go of everything he was ever attached to and he's becoming... A monster. A perfect machine. (Beat) And there's no space for people with someone like that. There's only space for weapons, and potions, and armour, and information, and anything else that's gonna help someone get power and influence and– And build some sort of empire! He doesn't care about what matters any more. He only cares about himself, and that's it.
  • Jerkass: He's a smug, ruthless asshole who violently lashes out at anyone who doesn't follow his orders to the letter. He's nicer around George and Sapnap, but even this starts to fade as he slips further into villainy over the course of BDAM.
  • Kick the Dog:
    • Killing one of Phil's crows, which, from a meta perspective, is a person in Phil's stream chat.
    • Blowing up Wilbur's coat alongside Tommy's secret stash in Exile.
    • Murdering Tommy's pet seagull Clementine and cooking the bird into a stew, then serving it to him.
  • Last Disrespects: Dream is the only person who doesn't show up to the Ending Memorial Service dressed in black, as the attendees of the funeral gossip about.
'Can you believe Dream didn't even bother wearing black?'.
'Do you really think he's the type to care about anyone but himself?'.
'I'm surprised he showed up at all.'.
  • Leonine Contract: In Chapter 102, "The Hog Hunt (Part 6)", Dream leads Techno to a secret passageway and a pickaxe and gives him instructions on how to return to the northern tundra where he was living.
Dream: Don't thank me. You owe me a favour. Call this little rescue mission an investment in our shared future. Be seeing you.
  • The Man Behind the Man: He's the real ruler of the DreamSMP, which Eret lampshades in Chapter 2 of BHAV, "The Break".
Eret: Dream rules the SMP and the King is there for appearances and for passing down messages. He himself prefers being a faceless type of leader – Gives the people someone else to get mad at.
  • Manipulative Bastard: As with canon, this is pretty much his whole schtick. The effects of his manipulation and emotional/psychological abuse are prominently seen during Tommy's Exile, where he develops Stockholm Syndrome despite previously being a stubborn, Hot-Blooded teenager.
  • Moral Myopia: Dream will commit acts of unimaginable cruelty against anyone who pisses him off for even the flimsiest of reasons and at times even without provocation, yet the second anyone stands up against him Dream acts like it's the most heinous thing ever.
  • Mysterious Past: Other than founding the city of the DreamSMP and being the Host of his Dreamon sister, not much about his past was revealed... until Chapter 45 of BHAV, "The Exile – Act 2 (Part 4)", which has him open up more about his origins and background before the events of the main story.
  • Never My Fault: He blames L'Manberg for spiraling his country out of his control, but Dream deserves a lot of the blame himself, having pushed them to it with his tyrannical rule and immediately escalated the situation with violence.
  • Slowly Slipping Into Evil: It's mentioned that he started off as a mostly benevolent leader, only to get greedier and more tyrannical as time went on. He gets increasingly worse over the course of BDAM as he gradually stops caring about the people around him.
  • Took a Level in Jerkass: At the start of BDAM, Dream is by no means a good guy, but he genuinely cares about his friends and it's implied he does care about his city to a degree, even if he's been mostly consumed by a lust for power. He gradually becomes increasingly cruel and callous as time goes on; by the end, Dream has become monstrously self-centered and obsessed with perpetuating conflict for it's own sake.
  • Virtue Is Weakness: As per canon, Dream starts cutting off his attachments around the Season 2 mark, i.e. by the events of BHAV, to the point that he knows and doesn't care that his Dreamon younger sister is undergoing Cessation of Existence because of his attitude towards attachments.
  • Why Did You Make Me Hit You?: His conversation with Tommy in BHAV Chapter 95, "The Final Straw", is rife with Blaming the Victim, but this line after Dream finds Tommy's secret stash in particular solidifies this trope's presence in the fic.
Dream: You hid things. You hid things you knew I wouldn't let you have. And look at what happened.
  • Would Hurt a Child: BHAV Chapter 91, "The Birthday Party" carries a trigger warning for physical abuse. It also takes place during Tommy's Exile arc. As per canon, you'd think we know what happens around here.

    Tubbo
First appearance: BDAM Chapter 3, "The Flowers"

  • A Child Shall Lead Them: He becomes the President of L'Manberg at age 16. As with canon, it takes its toll on him.
  • Child Soldiers: In this fic, Tubbo is 14 when the L'Manberg War for Independence breaks out.
  • Disney Death: It initially appears that Tubbo is killed during the Festival, but he is saved and nursed back to health by Corpse.
  • Friend to Bugs: He loves bees.
  • Hallucinations: He starts hallucinating during his tenure as President of L'Manberg.
Salty_Sam: (responding to a comment) [...] tubbo imagines previous presidents and how they would respond to certain situations as a way of coping with things. he knows theyre not really there, but he does it any way for comfort
  • Horned Humanoid: A trip to the Nether begins his transformation into a Hybrid.

    Technoblade
First appearance: BDAM Chapter 5, "The Consequences (Part 1)"

  • Anvil on Head: As per canon, this is how he gets executed by the Butcher Army... but it is deconstructed in the most gory way possible. He gets better, though, thanks to his Totem of Undying.
  • Deadpan Snarker: In BHAV Chapter 101, "The Hog Hunt (Part 5)", in response to Tubbo accusing Techno of keeping Ghostbur in the tundra with him:
Techno: (shocked) What? Oh, and what are you gonna accuse me of next, killing orphans? I swear to god, you try to destroy a government once...
  • Face–Heel Turn: He starts off as a well-meaning, atoning Anti-Hero who is genuinely trying to protect people and do right by his brother. After Schlatt reveals to him that he has always been responsible for his own violent tendencies, Techno decides to embrace it and rapidly falls into full-on villainy.
  • Hearing Voices: Like in canon, Techno can hear voices in his head, but this is explained by him being an Anomaly.
  • Ludicrous Gibs: What happens to him at the end of Chapter 101 and in the beginning of Chapter 102 in BHAV, courtesy of an Anvil on Head Public Execution played realistically. He gets better.
  • Mysterious Stranger: He starts out as this, being more commonly known as "The Blade", but becomes less mysterious as he is brought into the plotline.
  • One-Man Army: Techno can and will fight six people head-on and still win.
  • Red Baron: He usually goes by the moniker "The Blade" when living in hiding, but also went by "The Emperor" during his Antarctic Empire days.
  • Then Let Me Be Evil: After realizing that he has always had total control over his violent tendencies and bloodthirst, Technoblade decides to embrace it and fully commits to his anarchistic ideals at the expense of his own morality.

    Eret
First appearance: BDAM Chapter 5, "The Consequences (Part 1)"

  • Amnesiac Hero: They don't remember the events of SMPEarth, and the memories only start to come back to them as dreams in BHAV.
  • The Atoner: Since reclaiming their crown in BHAV, Eret has started to take steps to make amends for their past betrayal. After Dream and Punz helped Techno escape from L'Manberg following the Butcher Army's capture of him, Eret condemned the two for their actions, took complete control of the DreamSMP, stripped the two of their citizenship, declaring them to be criminals and terrorists, and officially allies himself with L'Manberg under Tubbo's leadership. The audience listening to his speech approves.
  • Badass Boast: Eret throws one at George during the Manberg-Pogtopia War, when the latter tells them that they have been dethroned and replaced by him:
Eret: I don't need some bullshit crown to be a Queen, bitch.
  • First-Name Basis: His Heel–Face Turn as a Regretful Traitor is represented by him re-signing the L'Manberg Declaration of Independence with his name, as opposed to his title as he first signed it with.
  • The Good King: Especially in comparison to Dream, notably demonstrated when Eret went against Dream's wishes to provide asylum to the attendees of the Manberg Festival.
The DreamSMP had two leaders – Dream had the power, and King Eret had the extravagancy.
And yet in the face of this tragedy, only one seemed to truly care for the city's people.
  • Greed: His main motivator for betraying L'Manberg during their revolutionary war.
  • Heel Realization: He has one in Chapter 45 of BDAM.
Average. Cookie-cutter. Like everyone else. Not better, not worse. That was what Eret was. He wasn't a poor, exploited man, he wasn't a great king, he wasn't a cunning traitor and he wasn't a lost spec of dust in the corner of the room. He was Eret – A man who made a mistake, and a man who could fix it. A man who could put away his greed, his anger, his hate and his regret and make some changes. A man who wouldn't let his past control him, and a man who would make the most of where he had pushed himself in his blind belief that he was all that mattered in the world. Eret would fix this – And it all started on Election Night.
  • Puppet King: As the monarch of the DreamSMP, to the point where disagreeing with Dream's political decisions alone warranted their dethroning. This is naturally lampshaded in Chapter 2 of BHAV, "The Break".
  • Rags to Royalty/Riches to Rags: Their arc heavily zigzags between the two tropes. Eret was promised riches and kingship in return for betraying L'Manberg during the War for Independence. However, during the Manberg-Pogtopia War, when they voiced desire to aid Pogtopia instead of Manberg as Dream wanted, Dream dethroned them in return, and they proceed to spend the year between BDAM and BHAV as a baker-in-training. It's likely that Dream would re-throne them in the future, in accordance to canon.
  • Regretful Traitor: He finds himself Lonely at the Top after becoming the King of the DreamSMP from betraying the L'Manbergian revolution, and has been trying his best to be The Atoner starting from the Elections.
  • Royals Who Actually Do Something: They provide aid for their people when they need it, and fought in the Manberg-Pogtopia War as a Pogtopian, though they had been dethroned during that time.

    Skeppy
First appearance: BDAM Chapter 6, "The Consequences (Part 2)"

  • Adaptational Jerkass: In canon, Skeppy was genuinely disgusted by Dream's actions towards L'Manberg and he only actually sided against the country after they had destroyed his house unprovoked; even then, he still came off as one of the nicer and more thoughtful members of the SMP even after joining the Badlands. Here, he's rather amoral and his portions of narration make it clear he doesn't care if the rest of the world burns so long as he and Bad are alright.
  • First-Name Basis: Bad uses his name in casual conversation, and he signs his shipment of supplies to the L'Manberg revolutionaries with his name as well, as a signifier of trust.

    BadBoyHalo
First appearance: BDAM Chapter 6, "The Consequences (Part 2)"

  • In the Hood: One of the defining traits of his appearance is the black hood obscuring his face.
  • Profanity Police: Shouting "language" is described to be "a knee-jerk reaction for him any time anyone dared to swear near him".

    GeorgeNotFound
First appearance: BDAM Chapter 8, "The Rescue"

  • Adaptational Badass: Unlike in canon, George fights with Manberg in the Manberg-Pogtopia War.
  • Armor-Piercing Response: He gives one in BDAM Chapter 141, "The Settling Dust (Part 3)", telling off Dream for his coldness and unwillingness to involve himself in the Manberg Festival and the chaos it ensues.
'I don't even know who you are any more.', George finally spoke up, lifting his head. Dream seemed taken back by his words – For a split second, Eret could hear nothing but tense silence.
  • Puppet King: Obligatory for being the King of the DreamSMP, until he gets booted out and replaced with Eret again.

    Sapnap
First appearance: BDAM Chapter 8, "The Rescue"

  • Adaptational Nice Guy: Since the Pet Wars don't occur in this AU, Sapnap's canonical reputation as a Chronic Pet Killer is omitted in BDAM.
  • Et Tu, Brute?: He feels very clearly betrayed when Dream refuses to help innocent attendees of the Manberg Festival, leaving them to fend for themselves.

    Nihachu
First appearance: BDAM Chapter 17, "The L'Manberg War (Part 7)"

  • Action Girl: Having been trained by Technoblade in combat automatically makes her this.
  • Demonic Possession: She does a ritual with Minx in BDAM Chapter 145, "The Recovery (Part 1)", to become Minx's new Host.
  • Sweet Baker: She runs the bakery and is a very friendly person.

    ItsAlyssa
First appearance: BDAM Chapter 17, "The L'Manberg War (Part 7)"

  • Ascended Extra: Alyssa has a slightly more prominent role in the story, as we occasionally view the story from her perspective, while she suffers from Chuck Cunningham Syndrome in canon.
  • Affectionate Nickname: Ponk has been seen to call her "Ally".
  • The Medic: Alyssa "had learned quite a bit about medicine in general during her study of the Hybrids in the city", as therefore helps Ponk with medical procedures.

    Ponk
First appearance: BDAM Chapter 17, "The L'Manberg War (Part 7)"

  • The Medic: Ponk is described to be "the closest thing [L'Manberg] has to a doctor", as of BHAV.

    Punz
First appearance: BDAM Chapter 17, "The L'Manberg War (Part 7)"

  • The Exile: After his aiding of Technoblade to escape from his execution by L'Manberg's Butcher Army, Eret publicly revokes Punz' citizenship to the DreamSMP, leaving him as effectively The Stateless.

    Callahan
First appearance: BDAM Chapter 17, "The L'Manberg War (Part 7)"

  • The Silent Bob: BDAM Chapter 162, "The Manberg War (Part 3)", notes that he never feels the need to communicate verbally.
Callahan, as he often did, remained silent. He never spoke – He didn't have to. His eyes found themselves expressing his feelings well enough... Or at least, those closest to him had learned to read him without issues.
  • Team Switzerland: He despises conflict and wants the server to return to a state of peace and safety.

    Awesamdude
First appearance: BDAM Chapter 17, "The L'Manberg War (Part 7)"

  • Animal Motifs: Implied to be a creeper Hybrid.
  • Canine Companion: His dog, Fran.
  • Cool Mask: At his first speaking appearance, he's described to have a mask of "an unusual green creature", presumably a creeper, covering most of his face.
  • Gadgeteer Genius: He is an innovator at heart who seeks progress, such as by designing complex automating systems.
Day thirty, he created a simple mechanism that allowed automatic farming. By day one hundred, he had created a gigantic automatic door in the side of a mountain that lead to one of the most intricate houses in the whole city.
  • The Hermit: He lives far away from the city, gets very few visitors, and tries his best to stay out of conflicts.

    Quackity
First appearance: BDAM Chapter 23, "The Letter"

  • Broken Pedestal: Quackity spends a few chapters of BDAM acknowledging this before his Mistreatment-Induced Betrayal.
  • Chronic Self-Deprecation: Duck Hybrids are said to "carr[y] a great deal of self-hatred" that originates from "the influence of others". Though Quackity's status isn't officially confirmed in the fic, there are heavy implications that this is the case.
Salty_Sam: (in response to a comment) duck... we know only one duck
  • Eye Scream: As per canon, courtesy of Technoblade and a pickaxe given to him by Dream. Techno himself acknowledges this to be a twisted idea, but he still carries it out. In graphic detail. To the point the next time Quackity appears, he'd just come out of surgery with the report that his left eye "is never gonna work again".
  • Fire-Forged Friends: Quackity eventually gains the ability to see Minx, a Dreamon, due to their bonding over having to deal with Schlatt's bullshit.
  • First-Name Basis: Schlatt insists on addressing him by his name instead of his title. Quackity takes the privilege back after Schlatt starts to tear down the White House. Later on in BHAV, Sapnap and Karl are seen to address him by his name as well.
  • Grew a Spine: Minx tells him to undergo this development after watching him falling victim to Schlatt's manipulation as she herself had. He eventually does learn to stand up for himself, though not without gaining a Broken Pedestal.
  • Loophole Abuse: He gleefully does this while running for President of L'Manberg.
'You said the president has to be L'Manbergian. Ain't ever said anything about the VP!', Quackity turned away, a grin growing on his face. 'I'm off to get myself a Vice-President, baby!'.
  • Trauma Button: His trauma from being part of the Schlatt administration is more explicitly fleshed out than in canon.
  • Walking the Earth: Deconstructed with Quackity's backstory. Being routinely kicked out for his business endeavors forced him into becoming a Traveling Salesman with a desire to find a place to call home.

    Jschlatt
First appearance: BDAM Chapter 28, "The Portals (Part 1)"
The deuteragonist of the first installment.
  • Adaptational Badass: He actually fights in the Manberg-Pogtopia War this time around.
  • Bad Boss: As per canon, to the point that his actions ended up traumatizing those that worked for him in Manberg.
  • The Chain of Harm: Being manipulated by Ted Nivison on SMPLive and other traumatic events in his past caused him to feel like he had nothing to lose, which in turn causes him to mistreat those around him on the DreamSMP.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: One that is fully explored in "The Truth" arc, revealing his Backstory on SMPLive.
  • Demonic Possession: Despite having extremely low Nether tolerance, he manages to survive and trek his way from SMPLive to the DreamSMP due to him being the Host for Minx, and even survives being shot in the heart by Quackity because of the bond. Niki eventually conducts a ritual to sever Minx's bond with him.
  • Disabled in the Adaptation: Techno's massacre by Fatal Fireworks causes Schlatt to go blind in one eye, unlike in canon, which had no long-term effects for that canon death.
  • Drowning My Sorrows: This turns out to be the cause for his alcohol addiction.
  • Eye Scream: Schlatt goes blind in one eye after Techno's fireworks massacre at the Festival.
  • Faking the Dead: Schlatt's "canonical" death by alcohol-induced heart attack turns out to be this, though he eventually still dies, but with only Wilbur at his side.
  • Fallen Hero: Schlatt used to be a genuinely noble man who cared deeply for his adoptive family and just wanted to make the SMPLive a better place. A massive Trauma Conga Line turns him into a vengeful manipulator.
  • Freudian Excuse: A massive one. Schlatt started off life as a Street Urchin with neglectful parents who eventually abandoned him altogether, and he was adopted by Philza. When the Lunch Club started pressuring Phil to move out of his home, Schlatt and Wilbur began a scam to make enough money to keep the house, only for them to get in trouble with the law because of it. Phil is forced to take the fall and is exiled, while Wilbur blames Schlatt for it, and a guilt-ridden Schlatt loses touch with him and Technoblade, instead getting a job as a reporter, only to have his career ruined by Ted Nivison in an act of sheer pettiness. Eventually, he reconciled with Wilbur and formed a company with him and Connor, Schlatt and Co., doing dirty jobs for the city's elite. Later, Ted talked Schlatt into joining the campaign to become the newest member of the Lunch Club; when he was chosen, Ted immediately began manipulating Schlatt and isolating him from his friends. Then he gets mistaken for the Source and nearly executed, and abandoned on the SMPLive when everyone decides to leave through the Nether, all because Wilbur wanted to save his own skin. The breaking point comes when he discovers through Ted's journal that Wilbur had voted for him to be abandoned after spending decades alone.
  • Freudian Excuse Is No Excuse: His Dark and Troubled Past does not excuse the cycle of abuse he inflicts on those around him as the President of Manberg.
  • Hazy-Feel Turn: After his Heel Realization, he's still a Jerkass and he cruelly refuses to let Minx reunite with Niki once he realizes she can't possess him.
  • Heel Realization: After initially arriving on the DreamSMP, he decides to abandon his plans for revenge against Wilbur because of both his amnesia and Schlatt's realization he still cares about his friend. Unfortunately, learning that Wilbur only freed him from the Nether to use him as a tool for election and that he was the deciding vote in banishing him, Schlatt goes back to his plans for revenge.
  • Horned Humanoid: It comes with being a ram Hybrid.
  • Ignored Epiphany: His Heel Realization and subsequent semi-Heel–Face Turn comes to naught when he realizes Wilbur's callousness and decides he's no different from his SMPLive self.
  • In-Series Nickname: "The Scammer".
  • Kick the Dog: Ordering Tubbo to execute his best friend Tommy, which is the beginning of his slide into genuine villainy.
  • Manipulative Bastard: He has become this by the time he becomes the President of Manberg, and Minx warns Quackity of this once while she's in control of Schlatt's body.
  • Nigh-Invulnerability: Being possessed by a Dreamon has its perks, to the point that he can survive being shot in the heart through the bond. Niki eventually removes this perk by conducting a ritual to make herself Minx's Host instead, allowing him to eventually die of an alcohol-induced heart attack.
  • Parental Substitute: Briefly to Fundy during his tenure as President.
  • Pet the Dog: In BDAM Chapter 122, "The Storm (Part 1)", he acts as a Parental Substitute and mentor to Fundy, fixing up his tie and giving him advice.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: He gives an epic one to AntVenom in BDAM Chapter 95, "The Truth (Part 12)", after he calls Philza a fraud.
Schlatt: Fraud? You sit in an office built with money you got from exploiting the city and yet you call Phil of all people a fraud? Do you know how much that man did for this city?
AntVenom: Right. Of course. It's the two of you that are frauds. Letting your father take the fall for something you did. What an honourable thing to do.
Schlatt: How fucking dare you? I can't fucking believe that I used to admire you! You're an asshole! You leech off people and then try to paint them as the bad guy? What sort of person does that?
AntVenom: It's called business. I thought someone like you would get that, but you don't seem to–
Schlatt: I used to look up to you. I'd see you up on that stage and I'd imagine being by your side. I even had this stupid little dream where we fought the Ender Dragon together. You know, a fairytale – Because I was just a kid with an idol. A naive kid you used.
AntVenom: It's not like you were the only one–
Schlatt: 'But lo and behold, every person I thought to be good turned out to be my enemy. Ted Nivison might be a complete asshole, but at least he doesn't try to hide it. Congratulations, not only did you take Phil away from us, you took my hero away from me.
  • Royals Who Actually Do Something: Schlatt fights Wilbur during the Manberg-Pogtopia War, unlike in canon, where he is drinking himself to death in the Camarvan throughout the entire thing.
  • Street Urchin: He started out as one on SMPLive.

    Jack Manifold
First appearance: BDAM Chapter 30, "The Portals (Part 3)"

  • Dies Differently in Adaptation: In canon, Jack got A Molten Date with Death after Tommy spleefs him into lava during his spiral for his second canon death. In the BDAM AU, he lost his only life after being shoved off a cliff, albeit also at Tommy's hand.
  • Important Haircut: He shaves his head after dying to hide the white hair streak that comes with being Back from the Dead.
  • Then Let Me Be Evil: After being killed by Tommy when he tries to rescue him from Exile and subsequently revived by Kristin, Jack decides that trying to be a good person has brought him nothing but pain and decides to "be worse" instead.

    JustaMinx
First appearance: BDAM Chapter 31, "The Scammer (Part 1)"

  • Canon Foreigner: Minx doesn't appear on the SMP proper.
  • Fire-Forged Friends: Quackity eventually gains the ability to see her due to their bonding over having to deal with Schlatt's bullshit.
  • Ms. Exposition: She elaborates on how Dreamons work, filling in gaps in the Captain's flawed journal entries.
  • Our Demons Are Different: She's a Dreamon, which means she can possess her Host occasionally.
  • Put on a Bus: In BHAV, Minx starts to drift apart from Niki and in Chapter 90, "The Dreamon's Choice", she is re-bonded to Austin and leaves the DreamSMP with him after Love or Host.
  • Sir Swears-a-Lot: She is described to have a very "creative" vocabulary.

    KarlJacobs
First appearance: BDAM Chapter 41, "The Debate (Part 2)"

  • Old Friend: Karl reunites with the MrBeast crew when they visit the Dream SMP and Manberg, being a former member of the crew.
  • Only Known by Their Nickname: Subverted as his title almost perfectly matches his name, unlike many others, which he lampshades in his narration.

    HBomb
First appearance: Chapter 46, "The Voters (Part 3)"

  • Naïve Newcomer: He had only recently arrived in the DreamSMP when the Elections happened, and as a result, "had no fucking clue what the hell was going on".

    Drista
First appearance: BDAM Chapter 48, "The Voters (Part 5)"

  • Cessation of Existence: In BHAV Chapter 70, "The Exile – Act 5 (Part 3)", Drista suspects she might be undergoing this as her brother and Host becomes resistant to her possession from losing his attachments.
  • Ms. Exposition: She explains how life as a Dreamon works for her in BDAM.
  • Never a Self-Made Woman: Played for Laughs when Tommy tries to find a nickname for her and eventually settles with "Drista":
Tommy: Well[,] I'm not gonna just call you Dream's sister. That's a bit awkward. […] How about… Drista? You know, like a combination of the words Dream and sister?.
Drista: So[,] I'm completely defined by my brother and my relation to him?
    Tommy: Uh… Yeah.
Drista: And you're going to call me by that nickname and nothing else?
Tommy: If you let me, yeah.
Drista: (thinks about it, grins, and shrugs) Sure. Why not?
  • Our Demons Are Different: Being a Dreamon, she can possess her brother and Host every once in a while.

    Antfrost
First appearance: BDAM Chapter 64, "The Resilience (Part 3)"

  • Animal Motifs: He's most likely a cat Hybrid, which indicates that he's "overwhelmed by a feeling of loss, or longing for something that is away from them", in the case of Hybrids, a loved one (in Ant's case, probably Velvet).
  • Cat Boy: He has a cat's ears and tail, which are noted in his introductory chapter to be his most prominent features.
  • Long-Distance Relationship: With VelvetIsCake, who still lived in MunchyMC, where Antfrost had moved from. The two send letters back and forth to keep in contact.

    Ph1lza
First appearance: BDAM Chapter 82, "The Goodbyes"

  • Adaptational Nice Guy: Philza shows more kind, fatherly traits in the BDAM universe than he does in the Dream SMP canon, where he seems to maintain more distance with other characters and has a callous side, presumably due to his semi-immortality.
  • Animal Motifs: Crows. The Captain's Journals confirms him to be a crow Hybrid, said to have entered the Nether with "malicious" (as in potentially life-threatening), selfish goals for his own gain.
Salty_Sam: (replying to a comment) for the crows phil's selfish aim was going into the nether to get things to summon the wither!! he knew they could hurt people but he wanted to fight one. its where he got the nether star back in smplive!
  • Divine Date: Phil is married to the goddess of death and serves as her Anchor.
  • The Exile: His five-year hardcore world is revealed to be this for him during the SMPLive era, where he takes the fall for his sons, who were illegally brewing potions in the city.
  • The Ghost: He is mentioned in many flashbacks and stories, but never quite makes it onscreen, and even during Chapter 77 of BDAM, "The Visitor (Part 3)", he sends a message to Techno with an arrow but never appears. It is only during Chapter 82, "The Goodbyes", where a segment of the chapter is told from his perspective, and he eventually makes his first formal appearance near the end of the fic.
  • Living Emotional Crutch: He is Kristin's Anchor and what keeps her tethered to reality.
  • Mr. Exposition: Phil explains several little-known aspects about Sources. Justified as he is the Anchor and husband of a Source and the father of another, making him particularly knowledgeable about the field.
  • Outliving One's Offspring: Phil gets double-whammied in this one because he somewhat adopted Schlatt during his SMPLive days, meaning he outlives two of his sons as opposed to just one in this continuity.
  • Papa Wolf: Implied, as he sends one of his crows to watch over Tommy while he's Exiled and to send him some supplies. Unfortunately, when Dream decided he was going to cut Tommy off from everyone, he meant it, and shot the poor bird two chapters into Exile.
  • Parents as People: The challenges he faced in SMPLive are heavily elaborated on.
  • Speaks Fluent Animal: He can communicate with his Clever Crows, which he believes are special to him. Justified because they are gifted to him by a goddess.

    ConnorEatsPants
First appearance: BDAM Chapter 89, "The Truth (Part 6)" (flashbacks) / BHAV Chapter 6, "The Ship"

  • Childhood Friends: Arguably, with Schlatt. Though they were teenagers at the time they first met in SMPLive, the long period between that and the events of the DreamSMP would likely make it count.
  • Embarrassing Nickname: Take his title from what you will.
  • It's All My Fault: As characteristic of a hedgehog Hybrid. In this case, it is implied what he blames himself for is the fate that befell Schlatt.
Hybrids that take on a hedgehog trait are ridden with overwhelming guilt. It is often that they are aware of something they did, or perhaps subconsciously blame themselves for something that happened, which results in them developing the trait. [...] Connor from SMPLive didn't display this trait until SMPEarth, where it started to develop – But he, himself, was a hedgehog Hybrid.

    Corpse
First appearance: BDAM Chapter 144, "The Survivors"

  • Action Survivor: Contrary to canon, in the events of The Village That Went Mad, Corpse survives the massacre.
  • Cat Boy: He has a pair of black cat ears and a cat's tail.
  • Composite Character: He is both good ol' Corpse as we know and love, as well as Catboy from "Tales From the SMP".
  • Cool Mask: He has a purple mask resembling a skull covering most of the right side of his face.
  • Mysterious Stranger: He starts off as this but eventually bonds with Tubbo.
  • Mythology Gag: In his debut chapter, he says that he loved when it rained, referencing a line from his song "Agoraphobic".
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: Subverted. Despite having red eyes, Corpse is a very kind fellow.
  • Walking Spoiler: It is impossible to talk about him without mentioning he saved Tubbo from dying after the events of the Manberg Festival.
  • You Remind Me of X: Tubbo reminds Corpse of his family, Cornelius and Robin, that others failed to save, which is why he saves him from dying during the Festival.

    CaptainPuffy
First appearance: BHAV Chapter 7, "The Shadows of The Past"

  • Animal Motifs: As a sheep Hybrid, she's a very caring person who "feel[s] a great sense of responsibility for putting someone close to [her] in danger".
  • Back from the Dead: After being sucked down a whirlpool into the Nether, Puffy dies escaping through the portal. Foolish, her son, brought her back as his powers activated for the first time.
  • Good Parents: She takes good care of her son.
  • Locked into Strangeness: Her hair turned white as a result of her son's Power Incontinence while reviving her.
  • The Shrink: Puffy attempts to be the Awesome type.
  • Sweet Sheep: She's a sheep Hybrid and one of the nicest people on the server as we know of.

    Ranboo
First appearance: BHAV Chapter 7, "The Shadows of The Past"

  • Nice Guy: He's a genuinely kindhearted and polite person who always does his best to do the right thing and is nothing but caring and empathetic.
  • Non-Human Humanoid Hybrid: He's an Enderman Hybrid, but Puffy notes that his other half is definitely not human.

    Vikk and Lazar
First appearance: BHAV Chapter 7, "The Shadows of The Past"

    Phil's Crows
First appearance: BHAV Chapter 16, "The Frustration (Part 2)"

  • Clever Crows: They are highly intelligent.
  • Evil-Detecting Dog: The author imagines that sensing danger around Dream could be something the crows can do.
  • The Omniscient: Implied, as the author notes the crows "can probably sense when another one of them is dead, even if they don't see it", and they know where Techno lives even though they might not have seen the house be built. She justifies it with them being a gift from Lady Death herself.

    Slimecicle
First appearance: BDAM Chapter 84, "The Truth (Part 1)" (flashbacks) /

  • Adaptational Species Change: In canon, Slimecicle is an actual slime, but here, he's a slime Hybrid.
  • Animal Motifs: Not quite an animal, but a mob nonetheless — The Captain's Journals reveals him to be a slime Hybrid.

    Foolish
First appearance: BHAV Chapter 64, "The Stories (Part 3)"
Puffy's son and the vessel of the Totem God.
  • Chekhov's Gunman: Phil first mentions him in passing in Chapter 175 of BDAM, "The Funeral (Part 3)", as "a fabled god of the sky and ocean". The sequel reveals him to be Puffy's son, and it is likely he will appear in more BHAV chapters in the future as corresponding to him joining the SMP in canon.
  • Emerald Power: His eyes became a brighter shade of green while becoming the vessel of the Totem God.
  • Gold and White Are Divine: As he grew into becoming the Totem God's vessel, his skin became coated gold.
  • Meaningful Appearance: He wears the shark hat his mother knitted for him, hinting at the two's close relationship.
  • Momma's Boy: Foolish cares about Puffy a lot, even after leaving her to focus on his duties as a god.
“You don't have to cry for me, because I'm always with you. When you miss me, when you feel more lonely than ever, when you think I don't feel your love for me, I am there. I'm always around you, you understand? As long as you Captain your ship, as long as you trust the sea, and as long as you live the life you love I am there.
“When the wind blows in your sails on a peaceful day, I am there. When the water moves your ship where it must go, I am there. When the storm rages on and not a single raindrop falls on your deck, I am there. We will see each other again – And until then, you can trust I am watching over you. You will be the safest Capitan out at sea... And once my task is fulfilled, I will find you again.”
    [...]
“So he... Left? Just like that?” the girl eventually asked, although it took her a moment for the whole story to settle in with her. “...I thought it'd be more... Ceremonial.”
“I guess he wanted to spare me the unnecessary pain... It didn't even settle in with me he was gone until about a week later. And then I cried, and I cried, and... You get the idea. But I started noticing his influence in my travels. Just how he mentioned, there was wind in my sails when I needed it, and rain never seemed to be an issue... He was truly with me.”
  • Please, Don't Leave Me: He shouts this after Puffy dies escaping the Nether with him. Fortunately for him, unlike so many others, Foolish can technically bring others Back from the Dead...
  • Power Incontinence: The first time Foolish brings someone, in this case, his mother Puffy, back from the dead, he accidentally turns all her hair white instead of just leaving a skunk stripe.
“...Normally, when someone comes Back from the Dead, only a streak of their hair turns white,” Kristin begins explaining, watching as Puffy continues walking around – Her long, white curls showing themselves quite clearly. “That part of their hair remains dead as a constant reminder of where the person is truly from – And where they will eventually return.”
“Then why is all of her hair white?”
“I suppose it's because of how you brought her back,” Kristin says, still carefully watching the woman in the distance. “You don't have a lot of experience. Your power is still new. And it was the first time you've ever used it. Naturally, it wouldn't be a clean process. So all her hair went white.”

Members of SMPLive

    Ted Nivison
First appearance: BDAM Chapter 84, "The Truth (Part 1)"

  • Dark Secret: His status as an Enderman Hybrid.
  • Dropped a Bridge on Him: Apparently, he burnt to death after falling in lava while lost in the Nether... except according to the author, he actually didn't.
  • Evil Is Petty: He is the main antagonist throughout the SMPLive arc, and one of the most notable acts he does is hold a grudge over Schlatt scamming him out of a chocolate bar when they were children.
  • Half-Human Hybrid: According to the author, he's an Enderman Hybrid, but only shows it with his height, body proportions, and discomfort for eye contact. This is further elaborated in Chapter 24 of The Captain's Journals, "The Traits", where the Captain notes that Ted was a Hybrid through both Nether exposure and inheriting the trait from his Ancestor parents.

    Pokimane
First appearance: BDAM Chapter 87, "The Truth (Part 4)"

  • Hidden Depths: Pokimane initially started out as the paparazzi on SMPLive but is later revealed to be heavily pressurized by high-ranking Lunch Club officials, and genuinely cared for her employees.
  • Intrepid Reporter: Implied. She was the top reporter and publisher of the Live Daily and was described to be "very persuasive".
  • Paparazzi: She worked at the Live Daily and was very heavily involved in any Lunch Club-related drama.

Members of SMPEarth

    Luke, Deo, and Blitzel
First appearance: N/A

  • Childhood Friends: With Tommy in the world of SMPEarth. In a meta context, the four make up the faction we call Business Bay.
  • Parental Abandonment: Implied. They were raised by Villagers alongside Tommy on SMPEarth, and none of their parents are mentioned.

Miscellaneous Characters

    CaptainSparklez
First appearance: BDAM Chapter 30, "The Portals (Part 3)"

  • Boots of Toughness: He's said to wear "heavy, hiking boots to traverse the Nether more easily".
  • Cool Shades: They are described to be "iconic", as they appear, in the meta, on his Minecraft skin as well.
  • Ignorance Is Bliss: He advises Phil on this, to help Techno with his Anomaly, as revealed at the end of BDAM Chapter 135, "The Festival (Part 2)".
  • Mr. Exposition: The Captain explains a lot about the Nether and relevant supernatural phenomena associated with it through his Journal.
  • Mythology Gag: His nickname of "The Fallen King" is likely a nod to Fallen Kingdom.
  • Posthumous Character: The Captain is this, being killed by The Emperor and telling his story through journals and other people's flashback memories... or he would be, if he hadn't survived his wounds and lives on to chronicle his past and more lore.
  • Red Baron: He is usually known as "The Captain" or on SMPEarth, "The Fallen King".
  • Secret-Keeper: The Captain kept Ted Nivison's secret about being an Enderman Hybrid.

    Squid Kid
First appearance: BDAM Chapter 47, "The Voters (Part 4)"
An enthusiastic potato farmer on Hypixel, whom Techno encounters during his quest for the "Unstable Potion of Extreme Calming".
  • Ambition Is Evil: Subverted to some degree. The Nether deems ambition prescribed to squid Hybrids as "rotten" and "selfish", but Squid Kid is still a relatively decent guy.
  • Animal Motifs: As a squid Hybrid, he's said to be very ambitious and driven.

    MrBeast and His Crew
First appearance: BDAM Chapter 75, "The Visitor (Part 1)"

  • Canon Foreigner: MrBeast's crew specifically do not appear in canon, but are seen travelling alongside him in this fic.

    Kristin
First appearance: BHAV "Chapter 65, The Stories (Part 4)"

  • Clever Crows: She gifted Phil his crows and gave him the ability to communicate with them.
  • The Grim Reaper: She's the goddess of death.
  • Inconsistent Spelling: Her name is spelt "Kristen" in BDAM and "Kristin" in BHAV.
  • Missing Mom: To presumably Techno, Wilbur, and Tommy, but mainly because her duties as a Goddess kept her from being with her family.
  • O.C. Stand-in: For her canonical presence on the SMP, Kristin is mostly either mentioned in passing or makes guest appearances possessing Phil's body, only appearing on the SMP proper in the Syndicate finale. In BHAV in particular, she plays a significant role.
  • Our Gods Are Different: As a Source, she requires an Anchor to stay connected with humanity. In her case, it's her husband, Phil.
  • Walking Spoiler: Her identity isn't officially revealed, though alluded to, until the end of Between Dreams and Memories, and she becomes a fairly major player in the sequel.

    Sally
First appearance: N/A
A mysterious woman who is important to Wilbur.
