"Let's claim the whole planet, it'll be funny!"note

SMPEarth is a multiplayer Minecraft server that is a 1:3000 replica of Earth, which allows people to build factions, alliances, and whatever they like on the map. It was started on November 22, 2019 by Chippledipple, Wilbur Soot, and JoshA20. Many famous content creators (Technoblade, Philza, CaptainSparklez, Wilbur Soot, TommyInnit, LukeOrSomething, Quackity, etc.) have joined the game, with the first three uploading videos showcasing their adventures.

The server is often considered a spiritual successor to SMPLive.

A public server with the same gimmick and the same name was created after the series' success.

Note: Unless otherwise specified, all tropes pertain to the characters, not the content creators that play them.

SMPEarth contains examples of:

    open/close all folders

    Tropes 0-G
  • Aerith and Bob: Some players use their real names, and others use screen names. Perhaps best exemplified with the Antarctic Empire, which consists of Phil, Pete, and Technoblade.
  • Alternate Reality Game: There are two, one by Chip and one by Josh, that tie together. Chip's, the "Octangula ARG", begins with the Southwestern Octangula. Josh's is called the "7 ARG".
  • Arson, Murder, and Jaywalking: Wilbur excludes Tommy from his alliance because of attacking the people he tried to form a treaty with, claiming their lands, and failing to get in the faction plane.
  • Awesome, but Impractical: Planes — they can achieve high-speed flight, but require fuel and cost a lot. Wilbur Soot tried to capitalize on this by building a paywall bridge across the Atlantic ocean, but that became awesome but impractical in itself, because Wilbur was killed seven times while building that bridge.
  • Artistic License – Geography: While SMPEarth does take place on an accurate recreation of the Earth, the actual countries are completely fictional and do not correspond to any real-world locations, for the most part.
  • Badass Crew: The Antarctic Empire is this — they even end up taking over the world on Day 8, by overtaking a large amount of the map. They are the most feared faction on the server.
  • Big Bad: The Antarctic Empire can be considered this, especially if you watch from Business Bay's POV. The entire server fears them, and they go as far as to claim nearly the entire map as their territory at one point.
  • Blatant Lies: Deo tries to build an entity cramming trap in Quig's base, but Quig returned home in time to stop the trap, questioning Deo on his actions - to which Deo claimed that Tubbo had done it. This doesn't really work, since VoiceOverPete joins the call, asking Deo if he's giving Quig one of his "welcomes".note
  • Broken Win/Loss Streak: Nearly every battle Business Bay takes part in is a loss... that is, until they defeat JoshA20 in the God War.
  • Chase Scene: The Antarctic Empire chase Tommy off by plane when he tries to execute a hit on Philza.
  • Cloudcuckoolander: There's quite a few on the server.
    • Tubbo's main goal is to build a plastic volcano, for whatever reason. He also goes out of his way to help set up a date for Kara Corvus and Wisp, making food for them to eat in McDonald's.
    • Fruitberries has a faction named "Funnydog", and has built multiple fast food restaurants for seemingly no reason.
    • Charlie Soot forms a faction themed around and named after K-Pop, and even builds an airport named the "BTS International Airport", after the K-Pop boy band.
    • BedheadBernie created an entire faction based on Hazbin Hotel, making a giant map art of Angel Dust. When the map is messed with, he declares those who messed with it to be "Hazbin Haters" and enemies of the faction.
  • Courtroom Episode: One takes place when the Antarctic Empire was put on trial for taking over the world with Wilbur Soot as the Judge and many players voluntarily taking Jury Duty.
  • Defector from Decadence: Wisp leaves Business Bay because he sees Tommy as incompetent and thinks he picks too many battles.
  • Didn't Think This Through: Deo gets stuck in his own minecart entity cramming trap and needs Tommy to break the minecart so he can play like normal.
  • Disproportionate Retribution: So, so much of it.
    • When Wisp insults TimeDeo's Skyblock skills, Business Bay retaliates by going to war with the Antarctic Empire.
    • Icebomb calls Tommy "stupid and poop", prompting Tommy to say he's going to kill him.
    • When Kara Corvus and IAmSp00n find out they're on the naughty list, they replace Santa's limbs with blocks of coal and rename him "LIAR".
    • Philza kills Spifey for seemingly no reason, other than him flying around a stronghold that Phil's faction had claimed.
    • Kara invites Phil to her faction after he dies to an airstrike, saying "Trouble in paradise?". He retaliates by nuking the Villager Adoption Agency.
    • Phil, frustrated after Wilbur tricks him multiple times, proceeds to kidnap Wilbur's dog and use it as a hostage.
    • When Phil loses a bet for just one diamond in Business Bay's casino, he threatens to steal all of the casino's diamonds, and then placed another bet, this time on Tommy's life. This leads to a stalemate fight between him and Deo that ends in him nuking Business Bay.
  • Double Entendre: Eret makes one regarding his hatred of Hawaii and his attempts at destroying it. The way he words it is... Well...
Eret: I'm going to fuck Hawaii.
  • Epic Fail: During the start of the SMP, Quackity clicked to spawn in South America at the advice of his chat, and ended up in what is roughly Santa Cruz, Argentina. What makes this qualified for this trope is that he wanted to spawn in the region of his real-life home country, Mexico, and proceeds to have a breakdown after seeing that he spawned at "the fucking tip"... then eventually spends 24 minutes rowing to the Mexican coastline.
  • Exactly What It Says on the Tin: A survival multiplayer server on a recreation of the Earth.
  • Explosive Stupidity: Tommy accidentally sets off a nuke on his own faction.
  • Fantasy Counterpart Religion: Braphogism, a religion following the deity Slam. It is best known for its odd fixation on fecal matter.
  • Fictional Flag: Nearly all of the nations have their own corresponding flag. The most well known is that of the Antarctic Empire, which is a blue flag with a lighter blue stripe down the middle, and a blue-and-white globe with sun-like rays coming off of it.

    Tropes H-Q
  • Heel–Face Turn: Wisp betrays Business Bay. However, this might be more of a Hazy-Feel Turn, since neither Business Bay or the Antarctic Empire are really... "good guys".
  • Ineffectual Sympathetic Villain: Tommy was perhaps one of the most hostile, yet also one of the weakest players on the server, constantly antagonizing everyone around him and getting absolutely trounced on the regular. His faction, Business Bay, followed a similar pattern of behavior. Tommy was also fifteen years old, so him trying to bully the adults of the server around ended up being endearingly ineffective. Out of universe, Techno actually praised him for this behavior, saying that a server like this needed a villain to keep things interesting, and he was very glad Tommy took that role upon himself.
  • Kill the God:
    • The Ender Dragon, nicknamed Big Bertha, killed JoshA20, a server admin, who of course has near, if not full control over the server, making that the death of a Physical God.
    • TommyInnit also kills JoshA20 and then receives a command block, which he first uses to be a Gravity Master.
  • Lured into a Trap: Happens quite a few times.
    • Bitzel's main goal is to trap someone. He later successfully kills SalC1 in a trap.
    • TimeDeo traps Quig right after he joins the server, and blames it on Tubbo. Quig is stuck in the trap for quite a while and dies repeatedly until Deo gets bored and lets him free.
  • Minor Insult Meltdown:
    • Wisp calls TimeDeo bad at Skyblock, leading to the beginning of the New Year's Day War.
    • Icebomb calls Tommy "stupid and poop", which Tommy reacts to by telling Icebomb he'll kill him, getting out a plane, and telling Deo to get in.
  • My Friends... and Zoidberg: Quote from Technoblade: "Earth SMP is a livestreamed survival multiplayer server, with all your favorite content creators. And also TommyInnit."
  • Mythology Gag: CaptainSparklez founds the Kingdom of Jordan, later renamed Fallen Kingdomnote , with the capital called "Creeper, Amman"note .
  • Nuke 'em: Philza has used nuclear weapons for unjustified reasons in multiple instances, including nuking the Villager Adoption Agency over a faction invite, and Business Bay over losing a single diamond to their casino.
  • Obvious Rule Patch: A law was put in place after Techno exploited the factions plugin to literally Take Over the World.
  • One-Steve Limit: Averted with three Jameses: Jameskii, James Marriott, and RoastedJames.
  • The Problem with Pen Island: Directly employed with Quackity and Aksel's faction, which is called Pen Island.

    Tropes R-Z
  • Regretful Traitor: Near the end of the server, Wisp makes up with TommyInnit after betraying his faction for the Antarctic Empire.
  • Running Gag: Technoblade claiming dibs on every territory he visits, as part of his quest to Take Over the World.
  • The Scapegoat: Tubbo ends up being this when Quig finds the trap that TimeDeo built and confronts him about it.
  • Shout-Out: As a video game server with many players, there are a lot of shout-outs.
    • There is a landmark referencing Phineas and Ferb called Doofenshmirtz Evil Incorporated.
    • One faction is named after Hazbin Hotel. The creator, BedheadBernie, has a skin of Angel Dust.
    • ArchieMcW's skin is a bloody Homer Simpson.
    • ConnorEatsPants has the Infinity Gauntlet on his skin.
    • One of Grunk's skins is a green Power Ranger.
    • Isaacwhy's skin is Rookie from Club Penguin.
    • Junky Janker's skin is Gumball from The Amazing World of Gumball.
    • Lego Maestro's skin is a Lego minifigure.
    • OGBeefStew's skin is Lex the Bookworm from Bookworm Adventures.
    • Philza's skin is Kisuke Urahara from Bleach.
    • SadSalad's skin is Garfield.
    • SenzuFrijole's skin is a Pokémon trainer.
    • Tubbo's skin is Tweek Tweak from South Park.
    • WildSpartanz's skin is Iron Man.
  • Silly Reason for War: The Antarctic Empire and Business Bay go to war after Wisp calls TimeDeo bad at Skyblock.
  • Take a Third Option: Despite most wars involving factions taking either the side of the Bay or the Empire, Newfoundland considers both of them its enemies.
  • Take Over the World: The Antarctic Empire's goal... which they temporarily succeed in doing when Techno discovers he can exploit the faction claim plugin in order to claim without using faction power by claiming the perimeter, causing the game to treat everything inside that perimeter as part of the claim. The faction controlled nearly all of the SMP Earth world as a result of this. Then, when they were sent to court, Techno convinces the entire court that it is perfectly okay, and then tells them to get off his property (reminder: the entire world). After over two hours of deliberation, the court decide that Techno simply needs to relinquish control of the world, and that neither he nor anyone else would be allowed to take over the entirety of SMPEarth again.
  • There Should Be a Law: After the Saint-Malo Trials, there were worldwide laws set, one of them being set to prevent Technoblade from taking over the world again.
  • Unfortunate Names:
    • Wilbur named his dog Pee Dog. His other dogs were called Poo Dog and Cum Dog.
    • Wilbur also suggested the name "Cummie Squad" for his alliance with Charlie Soot and TommyInnit. It was changed to "Cumin Squad".note
Tommy: Wilbur, when my mum asks me what I was doing tonight, and I say "I was participating in "Cummie Squad" with a 23-year-old man", how do you think she'll feel then?
    • The girls on the server form an alliance named "Coochie Gang".
  • Undignified Death: During the battle with Big Bertha, the upgraded Ender Dragon, Wilbur died to a random enderman away from the battle.
  • Wham Episode: Day 8 - the Antarctic Empire takes over the world, temporarily.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: TimeDeo to Tommy during the Internet Protocol Crisis.
Deo: So you leaked the IP and you expect him [JoshA20] to save you?
  • Written by the Winners: This gets brought up and inverted when Techno and Tommy make a treaty to the so-called Wednesday Warnote , during which Techno spots Tommy editing the treaty and gets off an amazing roast on him:
Techno: Y'know, they say history is written by the winners, but I can't help but notice him [Tommy] over there writing.

    Octangula ARG
  • Apocalyptic Log: The players come across abandoned logs and notes from Laramie Online employees that help lay out the story of the Octangula ARG.
  • Brain Uploading: Mariah's consciousness is said to be residing inside the ONEPRISM computer.
  • Entry Point: The Southwest Octangula is the location of the ARG's first clue.
  • Fallen States of America: A civil war in the U.S. prior to the events of the ARG has led to Wyoming becoming "Laramie" and Oregon, California and Washington becoming "Cascadia".
  • Haunted Technology: The SMPEarth server is implied to be a simulation run on the ONEPRISM computer, which houses the consciousness of Mariah Camrey, a Laramie Online employee who mysteriously vanished.
  • Make It Look Like an Accident: Laramie Online attempt to murder Mariah by "disconnecting her from BIGPRISM without following protocol", with the intent of making her disappearance look like an accident.
  • Sundial Waypoint: The first clue to the Octangula ARG is at the Southwest Octangula, where a giant sundial-like structure is located, which the players use to find clues.
