The emblem of the League

First Appearance: Detective Comics #405 (November 1970)

An ancient order of assassins created by the Demon's Head, Ra's al Ghul, to serve as "the fang that protects the head." Many of the DCU's most powerful assassins, mercenaries, and martial artists, be they villains who have taken jobs for them or heroes who were trained by them only to rebel later, have had some connection to the League. Occasionally other villains have usurped control of the organization from Ra's, but he always manages to get it back.

  • Adaptation Name Change: The League of Assassins is often renamed in non-comic works. Batman: The Animated Series called it the Society of Shadows, and the Dark Knight Trilogy and Young Justice (2010) called it the League of Shadows. Ironically the comics would later adopt the League of Shadows moniker as one of the names for a splinter faction within the League.
  • Adaptation Origin Connection: In adaptations and Elseworlds, the League of Assassins tends to have far more big-name DC villains be associated with the league, such as Bane, Cheshire, Deathstroke, Shado, Deadshot, etc. Villains that are Guest-Star Party Member also tend to be full-time core members in positions of leadership, such as Lady Shiva and Merlyn.
  • Ancient Conspiracy: They were founded by Ra's al Ghul in 1013 A.D, and ever since then they've been the heart of his growing criminal empire, working from the shadows.
  • Arrogant Kung-Fu Guy: League members tend to be quite full of themselves and perfectly fit the stereotype of arrogant martial artists.
  • Badass Army: This is a given considering they are a secret order of assassins.
  • Badass Family: Most of the members of the Al Ghul family are some of the best assassins in the League.
  • Badass Normal: Although they do employ metahumans and other people with powers on occasion, the vast majority of their members are just normal humans with combat training.
  • Badass Teacher: Most of their high-skilled members also serves as instructors within the League of Assassins.
  • Brainwashed and Crazy: Depending on the Writer, members of the League undergo brainwashing in order to ensure they become fanatically loyal to Ra.
  • Child Soldiers:
    • Many of their high-ranking members started their training to be assassins when they were children, notably Talia and Damian.
    • The Demon's Fist in Teen Titans (Rebirth), is a recently "graduated" assassin team of 13-year old.
  • Corporate Samurai: Their original intent was to be this for The Syndicate that Ra commands, but at some point they got so big The Syndicate just became the League of Assassins.
  • Conservation of Ninjutsu: A case of Depending on the Writer. The members of the League of Assassins are supposed to be the Elite Mooks and operatives to Ra's Al Ghul criminal empire. But in stories where they're the only Mooks Ra has, and he has a lot of them, they're just treated as cannon fodder, with Batman or other street-level heroes often beating them up as easily as they do with the usual street punk.
  • Cult: A lot of them are devoted to Ra's Al Ghul and his cause to the point of fanatism.
  • Death Is Cheap: At first the Lazarus Pits were one used only, so they were limited to Ra and a chosen few, but over time the League learned how to use a single pit multiple times, allowing for the revival of other assassins.
  • The Dreaded: Most who knows of them understand that crossing them is a grave mistake. The rest are pushing daisies.
  • Elite Mooks: While Ra's The Syndicate provides him with regular mooks, members of the League of Assassins are often treated like this. But Depending on the Writer, they may simply be the only Mooks, in which case they suffer from a Conservation of Ninjutsu. They got so much Badass Decay over time, the League of Shadows was eventually created, to show those were the true elite mooks of the League.
  • Enemy Civil War: The League of Assassin has had many splinter groups created over the years, of varying degrees of hostility, such as Leviathan, the League of Shadows, and the League of Lazarus.
  • Equal-Opportunity Evil: Despite their Arabic origins, the League of Assassins employs people of every nationality and ethnicity.
  • Exactly What It Says on the Tin: The League of Assassins is indeed an organization compromised of assassins.
  • Guest-Star Party Member: Several named DC villains serve as members of the League of Assassins depending on the story, such as Lady Shiva and Merlyn the Dark Archer, but they just as frequently leave and act independently from the League, mostly due to writers not wanting the villains to have the League of Assassins as baggage to the storylines they're planning.
  • Highly-Visible Ninja: Depending on the Writer and Depending on the Artist, their uniform can be quite formal and colorful for a supposedly secret organization.
  • Iconic Sequel Character: While Ra's al Ghul and Talia are nowadays integral characters of Batman's mythos, both the Al Ghul family and the League as a whole were created in 1970-1971, 31-32 real-world years after the introduction of Batman.
  • Immortality Seeker: The League of Assassins has many experiments concerning immortality and resurrection, all revolving around the Lazarus Pits. Usually on the high-ranking members benefit from it, most famously Ra's Al Ghul himself who's Really 700 Years Old.
  • McNinja: Despite the strong Ninja motif, the group is a Multinational Team, meaning there are plenty of non-Asian ninjas.
  • Multinational Team: The League's members come from all kinds of different backgrounds, ethnicity, and nationality.
  • Murder, Inc.: As their name implies, they specialize in covert operations that involve assassinations.
  • Names to Run Away from Really Fast: "League of Assassins" certainly doesn't sound like an organization the average person would want to get involved with. It's likely of the reasons so many adaptations change it to "League of Shadows", which sounds sinister but not overtly murderous.
  • Nebulous Criminal Conspiracy: The League of Assassins is a secret branch of The Syndicate that Ra's Al Ghul controls, with the League of Assassins often being the ones that run the most important and complicated operations, as well as being the ones who personally serve him and his ultimate goals.
  • Nebulous Evil Organisation: The League of Assassins is a secret organization of assassins that basically acts as terrorists to fulfill Ra's Al Ghul genocidal plans.
  • Ninja: Depending on the Artist, their Elite Mooks are styled as ninja.
  • Overshadowed by Awesome: Technically, the League of Assassins is supposed to be only a branch of Ra's Al Ghul's vast criminal empire, as "the fang that protects the head". But due to the League of Assassins being much more glamourous and cool than the rest of Ra's organization, they're the only one that gets any attention, to the point that not many people are even aware that Ra does anything but lead the League, and Depending on the Writer, the entirety of Ra's organization is referred to the League of Assassins.
  • Professional Killer: Most members of the League of Assassins are professionally trained killers, sometimes having been trained by the League itself. Members who leave also usually become killers for hire.
  • The Remnant: Several Enemy Civil War, usurpations and defeats at the hand of Batman and other heroes have left the League of Assassins severely weakened over time, especially after Ra got Killed Off for Real (for a time) and Talia founded Leviathan. However, when the story needs it, they're somehow back to being strong enough to be a threat to the heroes.
  • Rogues' Gallery Transplant: When the League of Assassins was first introduced, they were primarily used in Batman's stories, but they eventually started to branch out and appear in other stories in the DC universe.
  • Shrouded in Myth: Most people aren't even aware of the League's existence, even many in Ra's criminal syndicate.
  • The Spartan Way: The League of Assassins is very famous for its harsh instructors and brutal but effective Training from Hell, with several characters from the DC Universe having trained with them at some point, even if they didn't become permanent members of the League.
  • Spy Catsuit: One of their most commonly depicted uniforms are the classic catsuits associated with spies.
  • Street Samurai: Depending on the Artist, the League's Ninja motif is modernized to the point they look like a mix-match of ninja and samurai in modern stealth gear.
  • Super Breeding Program: Ra's personally obsessed with this, having created several programs within the League to create the "perfect assassin" by handpicking the most suitable candidates to breed, often by force. The most famous cases are Damian Wayne (born from Talia Al Ghul and Bruce Wayne) and Cassandra Cain (Born from David Cain and Lady Shiva), both who ironically ended up defecting from the League and joining the Bat-family.
  • Tyke-Bomb: A few of their members were kidnapped as children before being raised and trained to become assassins for the league, such as the Demon's Fist squad and The Silencer.
  • Undying Loyalty: Members of the League have demonstrated willingness to die at Ra's command.

The Al Ghul Family

    In General

In General

Given the League of Assassins has founded to serve Ra's Al Ghul, it's only natural that most of his family has either been part or has deep connections with the League.
  • Big, Screwed-Up Family: To say the least, almost every Al Ghul family member has fought another at some point.
  • The Clan: Downplayed. Despite Ra having been around for hundreds of years, the Al Ghul family is rather small. In Birth of the Demon, Talia attributes this to Ra living celibate for most of his life.
  • Death Is Cheap: Due to access to Lazarus Pits, members of the Al Ghul family have come Back from the Dead rather frequently.
  • The Family That Slays Together: Pretty much every member of the family is a master assassin.
  • Long-Lived: Most members of the family acquired an extended lifespan through the use of the Lazarus Pits.
  • It Runs in the Family: Ra has claimed that the Demon's blood runs in the family, which naturally makes them natural killers.
  • Shared Family Quirks: All members of the Al Ghul family have been intelligent, eloquent and had a natural knack for martial arts and/or swordsmanship.
  • Villainous Lineage: The majority of the Al Ghul family is composed of villains. Talia and Damian are the only ones that tried to go against it, with Talia being an Anti-Villain while Damian is an Anti-Hero.

    Ra's Al Ghul

Ra's Al Ghul/The Demon's Head

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/the_league_of_assassins.jpg

Probably the biggest threat to the world in Batman's Rogues Gallery, Ra's Al Ghul (Arabic for "The Demon's Head", and pronounced "Raysh Al Ghool" or "Rahz Al Ghool" depending on the adaptation) is a centuries-old man who leads an enormous international terrorist organization known as "The Demon", as well as the League of Assassins. Unlike most of the other Bat-rogues, he is actually quite cultured and polite, if ruthless, and genuinely believes his goals to be noble. Of course, since his goal is to "purify" the world by killing off ninety percent of its population, Batman disagrees.

With the assistance of the mysterious Lazaurus Pits, Ra's has achieved limited immortality, as they rejuvenate him every time he takes a dip. Such a practice has allowed him to live centuries, if not millennia, and he's taken advantage of such a long lifespan to master swordsmanship, war strategies, various fighting styles, and many other skills.

    Talia Al Ghul

Talia Al Ghul/The Demon's Vanguard

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/talia_al_ghul_poster.jpeg

The daughter of Ra's Al Ghul, Talia was raised from birth to lead the League of Assassins, becoming one of their dangerous assassin and operatives in the process.

Despite her father being opposed to the Dark Knight, Talia finds herself in love with him, and is often torn between loyalty towards her father and her love for Batman. Their romance also led to the existence of their son, Damian Wayne.

After several conflicts between her father, Batman, her son and even her siblings, Talia defected from the League of Assassins and severed ties with her father, and created her own similar organization called Leviathan.

See Batman: Talia al Ghul for her character page.

    Damian Wayne

Damian Wayne

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/damian_wayne_2.jpg

The son of Talia Al Ghul and Bruce Wayne, trained by the League of Assassins from birth to inherit the organization. But with his father's influence, he cut ties with the League and the Al Ghul family, deciding to follow in his father's footsteps and became the fifth Robin.

See Robin: Damian Wayne for his character page.

    Sensei

Sensei

Click here to see his design in "Eye of the Beholder"
Created by: Neal Adams
First appearance: 1968, Strange Adventures #215
"I can keep this up for less than two minutes. Fortunately, I need only 'one to break you!"
A high-ranking member of the League of Assassins, later revealed to be Ra's Al Ghul's father. He rebelled against his own son, causing a civil war within the League.
  • Adaptation Relationship Overhaul: His incarnation in Batman Odyssey is Ra's Al Ghul son rather than his father.
  • Archnemesis Dad: Has an antagonistic relationship with his son and master, Ra's Al Ghul, before they even found the Lazarus Pits. This is especially poignant during the The Resurrection of Ra's al Ghul story arc, as he's the one trying to sabotage Ra's return by destroying Nanda Parbat.
  • Bad Boss:
  • Badass Decay: During the "Eye of the Beholder" arc, he's no longer portrayed as being the Weak, but Skilled badass who almost gave Bruce a Curb-Stomp Battle, as Dick and Peacock are able to fight him off with relative ease and his stamina problem is no longer an issue.
  • Beard of Evil: Has the thin goatee beard associated with villainy.
  • Blood Knight: He enjoys fighting strong opponents, so he may raise his martial arts and assassination techniques into an art form.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: His "duel" with the Hook is just a brutal beatdown that Hook can't defend. Hook doesn't get a hit in, even with a superheroic acrobat helping out by tagging in and out, and is eventually killed.
  • The Dragon: Used to be Ra's al Ghul Number Two for many years, before retiring into a mentorship role, being in charge of all the training in the League of Assassins. He was put back into charge of the daily League of Assassins affairs after Doctor Darrk's betrayal and demise, only to betray Ra himself shortly after, starting a civil war within the League of Assassins.
  • Dual Wielding: During "Eye of the Beholder", he fights with a blade in each hand.
  • Everyone Calls Him "Barkeep": He's only ever referred to by his title of Sensei, even by himself or Ra. Whatever name he once had is said to have been lost to time.
  • Evil Mentor: He claims to have trained most members of the League of Shadows of many centuries.
  • Evil Old Folks: Given he's Ra's father, he's actually the only person in the League of Assassins who's older than him. His physical appearance is noticeably that of a much older man than Ra is.
  • Good Old Fisticuffs: He usually fights unarmed, but is so skilled he can break someone's arm with a brief touch or kill them with a quick Pressure Point strike.
  • Greater-Scope Villain: Sensei was the man who incidentally ordered The Hook to assassinate Boston Brand, who became the hero Deadman after dying.
  • Hero Killer: He's behind the death of Deadman and Kathy Kane, the original Batwoman.
  • Long-Lived: Being Ra's father, he has been keeping himself alive via the Lazarus Pits for as long as Ra has.
  • Old Master: Thanks to the Lazarus Pits he's a Really 700 Years Old martial arts master, have mastered hundreds of techniques and tutored thousands of students.
  • No One Could Survive That!: He's seemingly killed by an earthquake while fighting Ra in Detective Comics #490. He stays gone for years, until he's revealed to have survived in the The Resurrection of Ra's Al Ghul arc, where he seemingly dies once again when he falls into the fountain of life in Nanda Parbat and seems to burn to death, but then he comes back again during the "Eye of the Beholder" arc, revealing that he was saved by Peacock sneaking some Lazarus juice into him, which saved him from being Killed Off for Real.
  • Pintsized Powerhouse: He may look like a Miniature Senior Citizen, but he's still one of the deadliest assassins in the League.
  • Sanity Slippage: While the Lazarus Pits have kept him alive, his sanity has taken a toll from years of use, which is why he became The Starscream late in his life.
  • Villain: Exit, Stage Left: The original Deadman storyline ends with Sensei sensing the superheroes presence and disappearing alongside his assassins, leaving Deadman with no further leads on his own murder case.
  • Weak, but Skilled: The Sensei is one of the most skilled martial artists in the world, but his body has atrophied with age, and he no longer has the strength or stamina for prolonged fights. He still manages to almost defeat Batman in a few minutes, with only Batman's Determinator status allowing him to outlast Sensei's barrage of attacks until Sensei tired out.
  • What Happened to the Mouse?: He has not resurfaced since his defeat at Dick's hands in the "Eye of the Beholder" arc in 2011.
  • You Have Failed Me: In his first appearance, he kills the Hook for failing Deadman. Unknown to him, Boston Brand is dead and his ghost even witnesses the execution, so Hook is really being killed for nothing.

    Nyssa Raatko

Nyssa Raatko/Nyssa Al Ghul

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/nyssa_6.jpg
Created by: Greg Rucka, Klaus Janson
First Appearance: 2003, Detective Comics #783
"It's genocide by greed, apathy, and neglect. These are the real crimes."
Nyssa is the half-sister of Talia Al Ghul, and one of the daughters of Ra's Al Ghul. Much older than her half-sister Talia, the hardships she suffered led her to take up arms against her father, leading her to usurp his position and brainwashing Talia, taking over the League for a time, until her demise under the hands of Cassandra Cain.
  • Archnemesis Dad: Nyssa has been engaged in a centuries-long war with Ra's Al Ghul.
  • Arc Villainess: She's the main antagonist for the Death and the Maidens book in and for the Destruction's Daughter story arc Batgirl (2000).
  • Cain and Abel: During the Death and the Maidens story arc, Nyssa kidnapped Talia, and forced her into a cycle of death and revival, causing Talia enough trauma and Sanity Slippage that allowed Nyssa to brainwash Talia into becoming her obedient little sister.
  • Daddy Issues: Much like Talia, Nyssa greatly suffered under her father's Control Freak behaviour. Nyssa actually takes advantage of this to bond with Talia while she's pretending to be her neighbor.
  • Defector from Decadence: While she served as a lieutenant to her father for a time, Nyssa eventually became disillusioned with him and his genocidal goals and disassociated herself with him to start a normal life. Ra begrudgingly allowed it, as he believed she would one day come to his way of thinking and return to him.
  • Depleted Phlebotinum Shells: Planned to destroy all hope and optimism in the world by assassinating Superman with kryptonite bullets she stole from Batman's Batcave.
  • Dropped a Bridge on Her: She's killed off anticlimactically by a bomb in her car when Cassandra Cain did a Face–Heel Turn and took over the League of Assassins.
  • False Friend: To Talia. She arranges to be her neighbor and befriends the lonely Talia, all while plotting to use Talia to kill Ra.
  • Genocide Survivor: She was captured and imprisoned in a Nazi concentration camp during World War II. She managed to survive, but the rest of her family was eradicated.
  • I Just Want to Be Normal: After working with Ra for many earns, she eventually grew tired of his crusade and defected from the League to settle down and live a normal life, which Ra begrudgingly allowed. She lived at peace for a time in Russia, but then World War II happened and her entire family got caught up in the Holocaust. Feeling petty, Ra refused to help her or her family, leading them all to die, with her as the Sole Survivor, and eager for revenge.
  • Long-Lived: Even after she parted ways with Ra, he allowed her to keep a Lazarus Pit to prolong her life, and she managed to live for centuries with it, as she's managed to find a way to use it multiple times.
  • Mistreatment-Induced Betrayal: While she was already at odds with Ra, what truly made her hate him was his petty refusal to help her and her family when they were imprisoned by the Nazis during World War II, leading to the eradication of her family in their concentration camp.
  • Navel-Deep Neckline: At least one of her costumes has a décolletage that drops way below her navel.
  • Really 700 Years Old: Despite seemingly looking she's in her thirties, she a couple of centuries-old, thanks to the use of the Lazarus Pits.
  • Remember the New Guy?: She has never been mentioned By Ra or Talia under her sudden appearance in Death and the Maidens.
  • Revenge by Proxy: She starts her revenge on Ra by targetting Talia, kidnapping her, having her suffer through Cold-Blooded Torture and Brainwashing her to become her faithful servant.
  • POW Camp: During World War II, Ra's had allied himself with the Nazis, and Nyssa and her family were imprisoned in a concentration camp.
  • Small Role, Big Impact: She was only around for a brief period of time, but she caused a massive shake-up in the Al Ghul family and League of Assassins status-quo, getting Talia into the path of true villainy, discovering a method for the Lazarus Pits to be re-used and for getting Ra Killed Off for Real until the The Resurrection of Ra's Al Ghul arc.
  • Utopia Justifies the Means: Formulated a plan where she would allow The Society to conquer the world and destroy all the heroes: figuring that once the populace had tasted true oppression and seen their heroes killed, all apathy would die and the people would be willing to fight. She would then assassinate key members of The Society and she and Talia would rise up as leaders of the revolution. And, as he puts it:
Nyssa: A new world will be born, one of peace and equality. Millions of lives will be saved.
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: Like her father, Nyssa believes she is saving the world. They just have very different ideas of what 'saving the world' means.
  • Woman Behind the Woman: During her time as the Demon's Head she used Talia as a figurehead while she controlled the League of Assassins from behind the scenes.

    Dusan Al Ghul

Dusan al Ghul/White Ghost

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/dusan_al_ghul.jpg
Created by: Peter Milligan, David Lopez
First Appearance: 2007, Batman Annual #26
A son of Ra's al Ghul and a member of the League of Assassins. Due to being born an albino, he's considered a failure by his father and unfit to be his heir. Dusan is keenly aware, but still remains fanatically loyal to Ra, working for him as a scholar and retainer in the hopes of one day winning his favor.
  • Albinos Are Freaks: He was rejected as a potential heir to his father because Ra believed albinism meant he was crippled and worthless. A grief-stricken Ra tragically understands how loyal and devoted to him Dusan was when it's too late.
  • Ambiguous Situation: Post New 52 reboot, his character no longer seems to be dead, but he's only mentioned in passing on Teen Titans (Rebirth) to have banished from the League.
  • Disappeared Dad: To Mara in the Rebirth continuity, where he was banished from the League of Assassins and his current whereabouts are unknown.
  • The Exile: He's mentioned to have been banished from the League of Assassins in Teen Titans (Rebirth), for reasons unknown.
  • Familial Body Snatcher: He attempts to bring Ra Back from the Dead by first trying to use Damian's body as a host for Ra's Al Ghul to resurrect. When that fails, he uses himself as a sacrifice, allowing Ra to take his body.
  • Inadequate Inheritor: Due to being an albino, Ra's Al Ghul deemed him not worthy of being his heir.
  • "It" Is Dehumanizing: He calls Damian "It" since he only sees him as a vessel for his master to wear.
  • Killed Off for Real: His Pre New 52 version was dead for real when he sacrificed his own body to be the host of Ra's al Ghul resurrection.
  • Legacy Character: We later learn that "White Ghost" is actually one within the League of Assassins, as another White Ghost succeeds Dusan after his death. And they're apparently all albinos.
  • Long-Lived: Despite his status as The Unfavorite. Ra seemingly allowed him to use the Lazarus Pits, as Dusan has been around for a few centuries.
  • Non-Action Guy: Despite being a member of the League of Assassins, he's frail due to being an albino and doesn't seem to have much combat training, and is taken down by Talia and Batman effortlessly.
  • Remember the New Guy?: He had never been mentioned or hinted at before the story he debuted in. Justified since neither Ra nor Talia cares much about him In-Universe.
  • Sinister Shades: He's a villain who often wears shades to protect his sensitive eyes.
  • Sycophantic Servant: His Undying Loyalty despite how badly he's treated is meant to portray him as pathetic.
  • Underestimating Badassery: When he tricks Damian and Talia into the room where he plans to use Damian as a Human Sacrifice for Ra, he only brings two League of Assassin Mooks with him, thinking they'll be more than enough to hold down Talia when the time comes. The next we see of them, Batman comes into the room to find Dusan and the Mooks passed out on the floor, having been all knocked out by Talia when they attempted to take Damian from her.
  • Unexplained Recovery: In his first appearance, he falls down into the Lazarus Pit that he planned to dump Damian in, in order to give Ra a host, with the implication that Dusan himself would be a host. But next we see Ra, he's inhabiting the body of a man called Sam Tang and Dusan is seemingly fine. It's only at the end of the arc that Dusan's body becomes the final host for Ra and Dusan is Killed Off for Real.
  • Undying Loyalty: One of the most fanatically loyal members of the League of Assassins, he is willing to sacrifice his own life in order to bring about Ra's resurrection.
  • The Unfavorite: Despite his Undying Loyalty, Ra doesn't pay him much attention due to him being born a frail albino.
  • Vague Age: He was shown in some flashbacks to Ra's past, implying he has at least enough favor with Ra to have access to the Lazarus Pits. His exact age and who his parents even are are not elaborated on.
  • "Well Done, Son" Guy: Despite being seen as a failure by his father, Dusan nonetheless spent his entire life faithfully serving his sire in the League of Assassins in an attempt to gain his love, sacrificing his life to this end. A grief-stricken Ra tragically understands how loyal and devoted to him Dusan was when it's too late.

    Mara Al Ghul

Mara Al Ghul/Demon's Thumb

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/mara_al_ghul.jpg
Created by: Benjamin Percy; Jonboy Meyers
First Appearance: Teen Titans (Rebirth) #01
"All I want is to try..."
The daughter of Dusan al Ghul in the Rebirth continuity. She is an enemy of her cousin Damian in Teen Titans (Rebirth), and is a member of the League of Assassins as leader of the Demon's fist.
  • Always Someone Better: Damian has always been better than her at everything she tried, and he always liked to shove it at her face, which turned her into The Resenter.
  • Bad Boss: Mara wants everything Damian has, ignoring her own teammates' wishes for her own goal, or even their safety. This causes her Demon Fist team to betray her and side with the Teen Titans to take her down.
  • Dual Wielding: Fights wielding a sword in each hand.
  • Evil Counterpart: Mara has all the tactical intelligence and combat skills Damian has, but none of the (anti-)heroic conscience or leadership experience.
  • Evil Mask: Wears a red oni mask as part of her uniform.
  • Foil: To Damian:
    • Both are part of the Al Ghul family, but Damian comes from Ra's favorite child Talia, Mara comes from his The Unfavorite son Dusan.
    • Damian was raised telling he would be a leader, while Mara was raised telling she would serve.
  • Handicapped Badass: Becoming blinded in one eye didn't stop her from being a badass child assassin.
  • It's All About Me: She's extremely self-centered and arrogant even by Al Ghul family standards.
  • It's Personal: Mara pretty much has it out for Damian, her cousin, for throwing away everything she wanted and then scarring her eye.
  • The Leader: Of the Demon's Fist strike team.
  • Master Swordswoman: A requisite to being an Al Ghul, she's just as skilled with a sword as Damian is.
  • Remember the New Guy?: Mara is introduced in Teen Titans (Rebirth) as Damian's cousin (the daughter of Dusan Al Ghul) with a never before mentioned rivalry reaching back to their early childhood, even though he's never mentioned her before.
  • Red and Black and Evil All Over: While all of the Demon's Fist have this Color Motif, she has it the strongest, having even a red stripe in her otherwise black hair.
  • The Resenter: Mara hates Damian with a burning passion, since he has power, prestige, and most importantly Ra's approval, which is everything she wanted. It didn't help that Damian is Ra's biological grandson. And he threw everything away to become Batman's "son".
  • Scars Are Forever: Mara earned her right-eye scar after trying to kill Damian with a thrown knife for humiliating her in training. Damian caught the knife and threw it at her face, right over her eye. She's blinded in one eye now, as it's cloudier than her left one.
  • "Well Done, Daughter!" Girl: Mara wants Ra's approval more than anything, which is fitting given her father Dusan, wanted the same thing his entire life.

    Ruh Al Ghul

Ruh Al Ghul/Mother Soul

Created by: Joshua Williamson, Gleb Melnikov
First Appearance: 2021, Robin (2021) #1
"Your grandfather, my son, believed that merely cutting down Earth's population would be enough to restore the world to its former self. But I know the whole world must burn first. Purge itself of the disease afflicting it... and my Lazarus demon will do what Ra's Al Ghul could never allow himself to do."
Ra's Al Ghul's mother and the leader of the League of Lazarus, host of the Lazarus tournament.
  • Arc Villainess: She's the main antagonist in the Lazarus Tournament arc of Robin (2021).
  • Big Bad Duumvirate: Shares the role of Arc Villain along with Master Dusk in Robin (2021), although she's the greater of the two.
  • Evil Matriarch: She's the matriarch of the Al Ghul family, and apparently even more diabolical than her son.
  • The Leader: She's the leader of the League of Lazarus.
  • Long-Lived: As mother to Ra, she has been around as long as he has.
  • Meaningful Name: Ruh Al Ghul means "Soul of the Demon".
  • Non-Action Big Bad: She doesn't seem to have any combat abilities of her own, relying on the Lazarus Demon and her servants to be her enforcers.
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: She's so extreme she thinks Ra's Al Ghul is too soft for wanting to leave some people alive in his genocidal plans. She's a borderline Omnicidal Maniac who wants to wipe out humanity so the planet can recover.

First Appearance: 2010, Red Robin #8
You seek order but your life is a labyrinth, Timothy. You impart such importance to every little detail of the world but you humbly fail to note your own importance to that tapestry. You have been targeted for death in this tournament because you seek to learn too much. The secrets surrounding the ancient art of killing are meant as a divine promise to knowledge and power and cannot be usurped by one who strives for order.
Ra's Al Ghul's half-sister of unknown age who is directed to Tim by her brother in order to make an heir with him after Tim proves himself by surviving the gauntlet of secret tests Ra's set for him.
  • Black Eyes of Evil: When she takes off her omnipresent robe in preparation for raping and murdering Tim her eyes are wholly black, seemingly as a side effect of her using her right as a Daughter of Acheron as the use of those powers has been shown to manifest as whips of black smoke coming from the bodies of those using them.
  • Conceive and Kill: She plans to kill Tim after conceiving an heir with him.
  • Darwinist Desire: It's really Ra's who chooses Tim but she was waiting with Ra's for Tim to prove his worth as a genetic source for her progeny.
  • The Faceless: For most of her appearances, she's just a hooded figure standing ominously next to Ra. She only got to reveal her face late into Red Robin, shortly before the The New 52 rebooted the universe
  • Full-Frontal Assault: Due to her dropping all her clothes in order to rape Tim, when Cassandra interrupts them, she attempts to fight off Cassandra while fully nude, with a lot of Scenery Censor, Shoulders-Up Nudity, Speech-Bubble Censoring, and Toplessness from the Back shots to avoid any on-panel nudity. Like her sister, this is played for laughs, with Cass mocking her state of undress, although the Attempted Rape situation makes the humor a bit dissonant.
  • In the Hood: She wears a purple robe with a large concealing hood that hides anything of note about her appearance.
  • No Name Given: Likely due to series being cut short by the DC reboot her name and what happened to her after Cass defeated her and she escaped during the assassination tournament is never disclosed.
  • Sibling Team: She works together with her sister Promise.
  • Stalker with a Test Tube: She is tracking Tim with the intent to produce offspring by him but having no attraction to him personally and desiring his death at the same time.
  • Tangled Family Tree: She's Ra's half-sister, which parent they share and if she's anywhere near as ancient as her brother is not revealed. This means she's aunt to Nyssa, Talia and Dusan, and great aunt to Nyssa's murdered children, Mara and Damian, who connects her to the complicated Wayne family and whose brother is the young man she's trying to rape and murder. She's also called a daughter of Acheron but whether this refers to her actual parentage or having gone through some type of ritual involving the river in Hades is unspecified, all that is known is that this comes with certain abilities which can make her touch deadly and that her fellow daughter of Acheron "Promise" considers it her duty to aid her when she calls on her even if Promise doesn't agree with what she is doing.
  • Villainous Breakdown: She is rather upset and breaks her calm mysterious persona entirely when Cass interrupts her Attempted Rape and murder Tim:
Daughter of Acheron: "You have disrupted a ceremony years in the waiting! I must have the seed of the son—and with his passing the birth of life over death will be mine!"
  • What Happened to the Mouse?: She's never been seen or mentioned ever since her appearances in the Red Robin series, likely as a result of her character being introduced right before the The New 52 rebooted the universe, causing her to be Ret-Gone.

Ra's great-grandson and most distant known direct descendant, a Russian military officer.
  • The Ghost: He's never seen, only mentioned.
  • Morality Chain: His great-grandmother Nyssa doesn't really go overboard in attacking Talia and adopting terrorist methods until after losing Vasily.
  • Mother Russia Makes You Strong: He's a Russian soldier supposedly renowned for his courage in battle.
  • Never Found the Body: The officer who notifies Nyssa of Vasily's death mentions that an explosion was involved and that the bodies haven't been recovered yet, although Vasily is never mentioned again, and presumably died for real.

First Appearance: 2003, Batman Death And The Maidens #1
Nyssa's eldest son.
  • Heir Club for Men: As Ra's firstborn grandson, Ra wants to make him his heir before his mother refuses.
  • Killed Offscreen: Nyssa mentions that the Nazis shaved her sons' beards off and then shot them.
  • Small Role, Big Impact: He only appears in a few pages as a baby, but his birth causes the estrangement between Nyssa and R'as, which has a big indirect role on Batman and R'as's encounters.

    Hannah
Created by: Greg Rucka, Klaus Jason
First Appearance: 2003, Batman Death And The Maidens #5
One of Nyssa's daughters.
  • Rape as Drama: She is raped by Nazi Mooks and when her mother protests, she suffers the same fate.
  • Uncertain Doom: She presumably dies in the concentration camp the family is sent to, although at least one of Nyssa's children survived long enough to be Vasily Arketov's grandparent. Either way, she's presumably dead by the present day.

  • What Happened to the Mouse?: Several generations ago, he left his nephew's side after Ra's killed their longtime friend and ally for writing a history of R'as. He hasn't been seen or mentioned since.

    Bane

Bane

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/bane_as_ubu.jpg
Bane as Ubu in Legacy
Bane became a member of the League of Assassins during Bane Of The Demon, having been recruited after a chance encounter with Talia Al Ghul in an Order of St. Dumas stronghold.

Bane intrigued Ra's Al Ghul with his combat prowess and cunning, especially after Bane attempted to betray Ra, and came close to succeeding. But instead of executing him, Ra was impressed and not only spared Bane and allowed him to join the League, but he also made him his heir and fianccé of Talia (much to her displeasure).

Bane then served as Ra's Ubu during Batman: Legacy, but ended up being defeated by Batman, and was then denounced by Ra as an heir.

Despite his relatively brief stay in the League of Assassins, Bane became heavily associated with the League, getting stronger ties to them in several adaptations or Elseworlds, such a The Dark Knight Rises, Batman: Arkham Origins, Young Justice (2010), etc.

Ben Turner was a martial arts student and friend of Richard Dragon and Lady Shiva.

While the details of his backstory vary, it remains consistent that he was captured by the League of Assassins forcibly recruited and brainwashed into the villainous assassin persona of Bronze Tiger, and remained their pawn for years, until eventually being broken out/rescued.

After his departure from the League, he tries to atone for his sins done as an assassin while still struggling with residual conditioning of his brainwashing.

See Suicide Squad: Operatives for his character page.

    Cain

David Cain/Orphan I

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/david_cain.JPG
"You're too late, Batman. The real target... the one earmarked as Robin's replacement... is being hunted at this very moment. One of Gotham's children will be left orphaned, and there's nothing you can do to stop it!"
One of the greatest assassins on the planet, David Cain used to be a high-ranking member of the League of Assassins. It was during this time that he developed theories on the possibility of raising a child to become the ultimate fighter, the One Who Is All. After his first few attempts failed, he approached Sandra Woosan, the woman who would become Lady Shiva, and convinced her to carry his child. The resulting child, Cassandra Cain, was raised by Cain and the League to become the perfect killing machine. But Cassandra was traumatized after her first assassination, leading her to run away from Cain and the League, which devastated Cain and he eventually left the League of Assassins.

In the New 52, David, now known as the Orphan, was rebooted as a significantly different character with little ties with the League of Assassins.

See Batman: Rogues Gallery (Part 1) for his character page.

    Cassandra Cain

Cassandra Cain / Batgirl II / Black Bat / Orphan II/ The One Who Is All

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/cassandra_cain_loa_2.jpg

Daughter of David Cain and Lady Shiva, Cassandra Cain was the result of Cain's Super Breeding Program to create the perfect weapon for the League of Assassins. But after her first assassination as a child, she ran away from Cain and lived on the streets for years, until she got herself involved with the Bat-family, and joined as the second Batgirl.

After the Batgirl (2000) run, she disappeared only to resurface in the One Year Later Time Skip story arc as one of the leaders of the League of Assassins, having taken over a part of the organization after having killed Nyssa, with Talia taking over the other half. But Cassandra was later revealed to have been injected with a serum by Deathstroke that clouded her mind and judgment and forced her to obey his will, making her his puppet leader. She eventually rebelled against him and became a heroine once again.

    Cheshire

Jade Nguyen/Cheshire

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/jade_nyguen_prime_earth.png

While Cheshire has worked as a Professional Killer since her introduction as a Teen Titans rogue, she had no connection to the League of Shadows until The New 52 retconned her backstory to tie her to the League.

In the new continuity, she's a League Member who was trained under Bronze Tiger as an assassin alongside Jason Todd. When Jason defected, she refused to follow and remained to complete her training and became a full member.

But when she comes into conflict with Jason and Roy, she ultimately betrays her teammates and resigns from the League, saying she prefers working solo anyway.

Created by: Dennis O'Neil; Neal Addams
First appearance: 1987, Detective Comics #406
"It's better to be a servant in hell than king of dirt and worms"
The first member of the League of Assassins whom Batman met, and seemingly their leader, but it was later revealed he was just the visible manager for the League while Ra's Al Ghul commanded from the shadows. He betrayed Ra's and tried to take over the League, but was killed in a struggle with Batman.

He was later resurrected by Ra, kept alive via a cybernetic suit enhanced with Lazarus tech, which ensured his continued survival and ensured his loyalty to Ra.

  • Back from the Dead: In Talon, Darrk is revealed to have been resurrected by Ra's Al Ghul, but is now stuck in a cyborg suit that keeps him alive and thus loyal.
  • Bond Villain Stupidity: Despite supposedly being an Evil Genius, he falls into this when dealing with Batman, getting him and Talia into a complicated Death Trap with a bull instead of just finishing him off, thus giving both a chance to escape.
  • Man in the Machine: After being brought Back from the Dead his body is stuck into a dark Power Armor that mostly serves to keep him alive and loyal.
  • Non-Action Guy: He's not useless in a fight and at least knows how to handle firearms, but he mostly serves the League as a bureaucratic leader and planner and relies on Mooks to do the fighting for him.
  • Rasputinian Death: He's killed when he gets shot by Talia, and then falls backwards onto the train tracks where he's promptly run over by the oncoming train, with the smoke providing a Gory Discretion Shot.
  • Smug Snake: He thinks quite highly of himself and thinks he's a major threat to Ra's Al Ghul hold on the League. He is not.
  • Starter Villain: He's Batman's first contact with the League of Assassins.
  • The Starscream:
    • Was running the League of Assassins for Ra's Al Ghul for quite some time, until he decided to betray Ra and try to take over the League. But Ra already knew of his treason and merely used him to test Batman's capabilities.
    • After his resurrection, it's still implying his bidding for time and will betray Ra again if he's given the opportunity.
  • The Strategist: His primary work for the League of Assassins was working as a strategist and planning all their operations.
  • Unwitting Pawn: Ra allowed Darrk to betray him in order to test if Batman was truly a Worthy Opponent. Batman Inc. even retcons that Talia Al Ghul was merely a Play-Along Prisoner to him.
  • What Happened to the Mouse?: His last appearance was in Batman Eternal, still analyzing Lord Death Man for Ra as he was at the end of Talon. He's having no luck with it, on account of Lord Death Man being completely insane, and Ra's has written the whole affair off. Batman does find him, and beats him up a bit, but he seemingly escapes as Batman then gets distracted fighting Lord Death Man.

First appearance: 2009 Red Robin #5
A member of the League of Assassins who works as a computer and communication expert.
  • Chest Burster: Not as gory, but he's killed by Sac when the spider inside his body burst out and he's Eaten Alive from inside out, with various tiny spiders crawling out of his orifices.
  • Evil Genius: He handled contracts, information gathering and other bureaucratic work for the League of Assassins.
  • Everyone Calls Him "Barkeep": We never learn what his real name is.
  • Join or Die: Unlike most members, he was coerced into joining the League of Assassins when they threatened to kill him and his family if he refused.
  • Manchurian Agent: He has no idea The Council of Spider is using him to spy on the League, and is killed when Tim discovers, via Sac activating the spider eggs, making them burst from The Expediter's body.
  • Non-Action Guy: He's just a civilian who got forcibly recruited into the League of Assassins, so he has no actual fighting skills.
  • People Puppets: At some unknown point, Sac from the Council of Spiders infected his body with spider eggs, allowing him to be controlled by Sac and becoming an unwitting mole inside the League.
  • Sacrificial Lion: He's killed shortly after his introduction, to establish the Council of Spiders as a threat to the League of Assassins.
  • Unwitting Pawn: The Council of Spider infested him with spiders, allowing them to take control of him whenever they wanted without him knowing.

    Lady Shiva

Sandra Wu-San/Sandra Woosan/Lady Shiva

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/lady_shiva_los.jpg

"Any brute can kill. The skills needed to employ a club or gun are easily obtained. I am a true master of the lethal arts!"''

Sandra Wu-San/Lady Shiva was a martial artist student friend with Richard Dragon and Ben Turner, who originally had little to do with the League of Assassins.

Post-Crisis revisioned Lady Shiva's backstory to tie her more into the League, having their sister murdered by them and then forcibly recruited by David Cain. In the League, she perfected her training as a martial artist and also agreed to take part in Cain's Super Breeding Program project, thus giving birth to her daughter Cassandra Cain, whom she left in the League and Cain's care.

Ever since then Lady Shiva has been a sort of honorary member of the League, mostly acting on her own but accepting contracts or requests from the Demon's Head when necessary, such as her brief appearance in Batman: Hush.

Post-New 52, she has been tied even more deeply into the League of Assassins, with her character often ping-ponging between her "honorary member" situation to being a full devout to the League's cause, even leading her own secret sect inside the League, the League of Shadows.

    Promise

Promise

Created by: Fabian Nicieza · Marcus To ·
First appearance: 2011, Red Robin #18
You will never pay in a court of law, Viktor Mikalek, but I am the Promise of justice.
A Russian woman out for revenge for her brother's death. At first she seems like a potential ally but her sense of duty to her "family" makes her far more dangerous than it first appears as she is also the "sister" by pact of Ra's al Ghul's unnamed half-sister.
  • Bulletproof Vest: She's never seen without her ballistic vest. Although the deep cleavage it has makes its protection questionable.
  • Everyone Calls Him "Barkeep": Her given name is never stated, only that it is Russian. She's only ever called by her Codename.
  • Family Honor: Her prime motivation.
  • Full-Frontal Assault: Tim ends up tracking her just as she's in the middle of showering, leading to her attacking him while mostly naked, save for a Modesty Towel she throws on. It's played for Naked People Are Funny since Tim is trying not to stare while also trying to defend himself and attempting to convince her he's not there to fight. Some Censor Shadow and Scenery Censor are used to avoid any on-panel nudity.
  • Guns Akimbo: She enters Mikalek's building while firing a gun in each hand.
  • It's Personal: Mikalek caused her brother's death which is why she's determined to kill him.
  • Pay Evil unto Evil: Viktor Mikalek is unquestionably a villain with ties to many others within the DCU and she plans to murder him for his actions.
  • Revenge: She's seeking revenge for her brother's death.
  • Revenge Before Reason: She intends to kill Mikalek despite taking a oath not to kill and would have probably succeeded by now if she wasn't going out of her way to avoid casualties but she still is knowingly repeatedly putting herself in harms way in order to yell at Mikalek while trying to kill him instead of just sniping the guy from another building.
  • Sibling Team: She works together with her unnamed "Daughter of Acheron" sister.
  • Thicker Than Water: She will do anything for her family regardless of her personal feelings on the matter.
  • Vengeance Feels Empty: She has no expectation of anything else but feels it's her duty to kill the man responsible for her brother's death.
  • What Happened to the Mouse?: She's never been seen or mentioned ever since her appearances in the Red Robin series, likely as a result of her character being introduced right before the The New 52 rebooted the universe, causing her to be Ret-Gone.

First appearance: 2005, Batgirl (2000) #68
A member of the League of Assassins who served under Nyssa Al Ghul.
  • Badass Normal: Has no powers other than her combat training.
  • Bare-Fisted Monk: The little we see her fight, she does it barehanded.
  • Everyone Calls Him "Barkeep": We never learn what her real name is.
  • Faux Action Girl: Despite being a member of the League of Assassins under Lady Shiva, she doesn't demonstrate much skill and is a borderline Damsel in Distress who needs to be rescued by Batgirl and Alpha while fighting Mad Dog.
  • Hero-Worshipper: Like Ox and White Willow, she reveres Cassandra for her status in the League as Cain's ultimate weapon "One-Who-Is-All" and for having previously defeated Lady Shiva. Cassandra greatly dislikes this worship.
  • Mysterious Veil: All she even wears is a Niqab that conceals most of her physical features.
  • Sole Survivor: She was the only of Nyssa's League of Assassins members to survive after they sided with Cassandra

    Ubu

Ubu

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ubu_loa.jpg
Created by: Dennis O'Neil; Neal Adams
First appearance: 1971, Batman #232
A member of the League of Assassins and personal bodyguard and servant to Ra's Al Ghul.
  • Bald of Evil: The vast majority of Ubu's design tends to be bald.
  • Badass Decay: Early on Ubu could give Batman a run for his money in a one-on-one fight. As time went on Ubu became little more than an Elite Mook and would suffer from The Worf Effect.
  • Badass Normal: Most versions of Ubu are normal men who only use their assassin skills to fight.
  • Battle Butler: He Ra's Al Ghul personal bodyguard and manservant.
  • Bat People: One version of Ubu was altered by Kirk Langstrom's Man-Bat formula, becoming a Man-Bat himself.
  • Bodyguarding a Badass: He's usually serving as the bodyguard to either Ra's Al Ghul or Talia, but both are actually deadlier than he is.
  • The Brute: Ubu rarely acts independently and simply follows orders as Ra's muscle and personal enforcer.
  • Collective Identity: It's been suggested that the majority of men who served as Ubu are born in the same family and raised from birth to the role. It's implied that they may even be clones.
  • Conservation of Ninjutsu: During Nyssa Al Ghul's time as the Demon Head, she had multiple Ubu's serving as her bodyguards, and they were taken down as easily as regular Mooks.
  • Giant Mook: Ubu tends to be a man of hulking stature.
  • It's Personal: The first Ubu we know of developed a personal grudge against Batman after a string of defeats, to the point that he traveled to Gotham on his own for Revenge, attacking Wayne Manor and almost killing Alfred before Batman intervened.
  • Legacy Character: Ubu is a title, rather than a name and Ra tends to replace Ubus fairly frequently. Bane himself once served as Ubu.
  • Malevolent Masked Men: Many versions of Ubu wear different types of masks.
  • The Quiet One: Most of them don't them to speak much, usually content standing ominously next to Ra.
  • Self-Disposing Villain: The first Ubu ended up getting himself killed during the find by impaling himself in splintered wood while trying to kill Batman.
  • Sycophantic Servant: Ubu's devotion to Ra tends to border on worship.
  • Undying Loyalty: Most Ubu's tend to be fanatically loyal to Ra and are willing to give their lives to protect him or his interests.
  • You Kill It, You Bought It: During Bane of the Demon, Bane kills Ubu and takes his place as the new Ubu.
  • The Worf Effect: Other villains often present themselves as a threat to Ra by beating or killing off Ubu.
    • During Bane of the Demon Bana fights and kills off Ubu during his rebellion with Ra. Ra himself then manages to beat Bane, but then recruits him as the new Ubu for the Batman: Legacy arc.
    • During The Resurrection of Ra's Al Ghul, Alfred himself manages to beat him via a humiliating Groin Attack.
    • When Talia imprisoned Ra in Batman Inc., she had the Heretic (her own version of Ubu) kill off two Ubu's that were guarding Ra.
  • Would Hurt a Child: Ubu once held Encantadora's brother Victor as a hostage, so Ra could control her, as if she ever disobeyed him, Ubu would kill him in an instant. Ubu's just about to do it, when Talia rescues the boy.

    Whisper A'Daire

Tatiana/Whisper A'Daire

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/whisper_adaire_loa.png

Originally a member of the League of Assassins that was partnered with Kyle Abbot. They were both gifted by Ra's Al Ghul with a Lazarus serum that would enhance their lifespan and grant them animalistic powers, in her case, granting her snake-like powers and appearance.

After Ra's Al Ghul's death, he left the League along with Whisper and both joined the Intergang together and she became a high priestess of the Cult of Cain.

    White Ghost II

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/white_ghost_2.jpg
Created by: Fabian Nicieza; Frazer Irving
First appearance: 2009, Azrael: Death's Dark Knight #3
"Those worthy of serving, live to serve."
The second known White Ghost, a high-ranking member of the League of Assassins who is fanatically devoted to Ra's Al Ghul.
  • Albinos Are Freaks: He wears a mask that invokes this, making him look like an albino man with clearly inhumane characteristics.
  • Badass Normal: Has no powers other than his training as an assassin.
  • Bald of Evil: Beneath his mask, he's just a bald man, devoid of any facial characteristics.
  • The Dragon: Seemed to have become Ra's new Number Two after Talia founded Leviathan, during the last few years before the The New 52 reboot.
  • Dual Wielding: He fights dual-wielding swords.
  • Enemy Mine: Has fought alongside both Tim Drake and Azazel against a common enemy of The League of Assassins.
  • Evil Mask: The monstrous white-skinned mask he wears seems to signify his position as the White Ghost.
  • Legacy Character: He's the second (that we know of) League of Assassins character to take the title of White Ghost. When Tim believes at first he's Dusan who's Back from the Dead, Fadir merely answers there's always a White Ghost in the League.
  • Never Hurt an Innocent: He firmly believes the League of Assassins and Ra's himself are Above Good and Evil, so when he attempts to test Azazel's character by threatening to kill innocents, Azazel calls him on his bluff, saying he'd never actually let an innocent be harmed, and he's proven right when White Ghost is forced to save them.
  • Noble Demon: He may be an enforcer for the League of Assassins, but he has his own code of honor and seems to believe they're actually serving a greater good.
  • Religious Bruiser: His encounter with Azazel reveals he deeply respects the influence of religion, saying any true faith - regardless of religion - speaks to a man's strength.
  • Ret-Gone: His character seems to have vanished from the continuity after the The New 52 reboot, since Dusan is back alive again to take the White Ghost mantle.
  • Suspiciously Similar Substitute: His character is extremely similar to that of Ubu, both being a Legacy Character in the league who are fanatically devoted servants to Ra. Notably was actually absent during the time where White Ghost II was active. The biggest difference between both is that White Ghost II would often act more independently, while Ubu was almost always a bodyguard.
  • Undying Loyalty: The position of White Ghost is reserved by members who show a particularly high level of loyalty to Ra.
  • Villain Respect: Has a great deal of respect for Azazel, due to them both being Religious Bruisers. Subverted with Tim Drake, whom he despises despite his master finding Drake a Worthy Opponent.

    White Willow

White Willow

Created by: Andersen Gabrych; Alé Garza

  • Badass Normal: Has no powers other than her combat training.
  • Everyone Calls Him "Barkeep": We never learn what her real name is.
  • Hero-Worshipper: Like Tigris and Ox, she reveres Cassandra for her status in the League as Cain's ultimate weapon "One-Who-Is-All" and for having previously defeated Lady Shiva. Cassandra greatly dislikes this worship.
  • Sacrificial Lion: She exists to be killed by Mad Dog, establishing Mad Dog as a threat and creating anguish on Cassandra by having her watch a teammate die.
  • Slashed Throat: She dies when Mad Dog tears open her throat with his bare hands.
  • Too Dumb to Live: Despite seeing how easily Mad Dog dispatched other assassins and being told by Cassandra to retreat, she refuses and dashes and him instead, and promptly killed by him in seconds.

Seven Men of Death

In General

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/1493539_sevendeath.jpg

An Elite squad of League of Assassin members was originally created by Sensei, but they also later worked for Talia and followed her when she founded Leviathan.

  • Badass Normal: They have no superpowers and fight using only their assassin skills.
  • Flat Character: Outside of Merlyn and Hook, they don't get much characterization. And Merlyn and Hook got most of their characterization when they weren't members of the team.
  • Elite Mooks: Are mostly used like this, since by the time they're introduced ordinary League of Assassin members fall into Conservation of Ninjutsu. They're usually at least able to give heroes a fight.
  • Everyone Calls Him "Barkeep": Outside of Merlyn and Hook, we never learn any of their real names.

    Merlyn

Roy Martin Matson/The Hook

  • An Arm and a Leg: Had his right hand cut off by Sensei as punishment for failing a mission.
  • Artificial Limbs: His hook acts as a replacement for his hand.
  • Arch-Enemy: Hook has a special rivalry with Deadman, being the assassin that got the hit to kill him.
  • Contract on the Hitman: He was targeted for executing by the League of Assassins for failing to kill the circus aerialist Deadman, although ironically it turned out he hadn't actually failed - Boston Brand happened to have an identical twin brother who took his place in the act, leading to the confusion.
  • Cold Sniper: He used to be a skilled sniper before he lost his right hand.
  • The Gunslinger: After losing his hand, he couldn't use his marksmanship skills with two-handed weapons anymore, so he specialized in being a gunslinger instead.
  • Hook Hand: After losing his right hand, he replaced it with a large, sharp metal hook affixed to his arm
  • Hooks and Crooks: Uses one as his motif and weapon.
  • Spell My Name with a "The": The Hook.
  • They Call Him "Sword": His Codename came from the Hook he placed on his right hand, after having lost the limb.
  • You Have Failed Me: After failing a job, Sensei punishes him by forcing him to commit Yubitsume. But just as Matson was about to perform the ritual, the Sensei takes one swift stroke with and axe and servers Matson's right hand, revealing this was the true punishment and the Yubitsume just a distraction. He's then tasked with killing a Worthy Opponent even after losing his main hand, leading him to his rivalry with Deadman.

  • The Smurfette Principle: She's the only female member in the "Seven Men of Death".
  • Whip of Dominance: She uses a whip as a weapon and the only piece of characterization given to her is that she's something of a cold Jerkass who's not above whipping a teammate to death because he's no longer of use to the league.

Demon's Fist

    In General

In General

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/demon_fist.jpg
The Demon's Fist is a unit of assassins-in-training, designed to be led by Damian when they all reach the age of thirteen. But when he defected from the League of Assassins, the group's leadership fell to his cousin Mara, and Ra sent them after Damian and his Titan team when they came of age. The group was disbanded when Damian and the Titans convinced most of the team to turn on Ra and the League.
  • Child Soldiers: They're a League of Assassin team compromised of 13-year olds, meant to oppose Damian's Teen Titans team.
  • Everyone Calls Him "Barkeep": Outside of Mara, their real names are never mentioned.
  • Evil Counterpart: They were all created to oppose the respective Titan member they fought in Teen Titans (Rebirth).
  • Mistreatment-Induced Betrayal: In Teen Titans (Rebirth), all the Demon's Fist members outside Mara team up with the Titans to take down Mara and Ra's once the truth comes out that the League kidnapped them as infants, and even before then they clearly hated how Mara treated them.
  • Red and Black and Evil All Over: Their assassin team whose uniforms have red and black as a Color Motif.
  • Starter Villain: They're the first opponents Damian's Titans face as a team in Teen Titans (Rebirth).
  • Tyke-Bomb: Outside of Damian and Mara, every member of the Demon's Fist was kidnapped from their families when they were infants by the League of Assassins, and raised by Ra's Al Ghul to become nothing more than devoted, ruthless killers. When they learned the truth of their upbringing, they side with the Titans and betray Ra's, before going their own way to find themselves.
  • Worthy Opponent: Each member has to kill at least one person considered a worthy opponent in order to fully graduate into the League of Assassins. Ra sends them against Damian's new Titans team in Teen Titans (Rebirth).

The League of Shadows

    In General

In General

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/league_of_shadows.jpg
The League of Shadows is a secret branch of the League of Assassins, meant to be loyal exclusively to Ra's Al Ghul's cause, but they went rogue while under Lady Shiva's leadership.
  • Conservation of Ninjutsu: Just like the League of Assassins, the members from the League of Shadows but hundreds of them get beaten by Cassandre all by herself.
  • Covert Group: They're the members of the League who specialize in stealth and subterfuge. They don't even take credit for their kills and rarely act in the open.
  • Elite Mooks: They're supposed to be an elite version of the regular League of Assassins.
  • Hidden in Plain Sight: Their members disguise themselves as normal civilians. Only Orphan's trained eyes manages to tell them apart.
  • In the Hood: Their Ninja uniforms have hoods that cover their faces. Their members seem to wear black coats with hoods even when out of combat.
  • Katanas Are Just Better: They wield katanas capable of easily piercing titanium-alloy armor.
  • Renegade Splinter Faction: The League of Shadows went rogue when Lady Shiva took control of the faction. Even after her defeat, they remained separate from the main branch of the League.
  • Shrouded in Myth: Even League of Assassins members aren't supposed to know the League of Shadows even exists. When Jacob Kane insists to Batman about their existence, Batman is skeptical, believing it's just a myth Ra made up. Later Ra himself reveals that Batman actually had discovered the League of Shadow's existence three times before, and Ra's used various forms of Laser-Guided Amnesia to wipe that information from his mind, ultimately convincing him the group was just a myth.

First Appearance: 2021, Detective Comics #1034
The head trainer of the League of Shadows who was banished by Talia Al Ghul after being too harsh while training Damian. He returned and seemingly took over the League of Shadows sometime after Lady Shiva's defeat.
  • Bald of Evil: A scheming evil man who's bald, except for his Beard of Evil.
  • Beard of Evil: His beard is drawn in a villainous fashion, and also combines with his Bald of Evil to give him a classic "evil" look.
  • Big Bad Duumvirate: Shares the role of Arc Villain along with Mother Soul in Robin (2021), although he's the lesser of the two.
  • Drill Sergeant Nasty: The League is already known for its Training from Hell and The Spartan Way tendencies when it comes to training and raising its members, but apparently Master Dusk was so harsh it actually got him banished from the League by Talia when he trained Damian. Although whether he was really harsh or Talia was being an Overprotective Mother is unclear.
  • The Exile: He was banished from the League by Talia for the way his training of Damian went, although the details are still unclear. He did eventually return and assumed leadership of the League of Shadows once it parted ways with Talia and Ra.
  • Evil Mentor: He was the head trainer for the League of Shadows. Also tried to be one for Connor Hawke, convincing him to join the League of Shadows, but Connor later reveals to Damian he only joined so he could take down the Lazarus Demon when the time came.
  • In the Hood: Just like most members of the League of Shadows, he's always wearing his dark hooded robes, only occasionally bringing the hood down when he talks.
  • Loophole Abuse: Attempts to get rid of Damian in the Lazarus Tournament via this, ordering Hawk to injure Damian, but not kill him. If he dies, he's just come Back from the Dead due to the constant revivals on Lazarus Island, but if he were just severely injured, he just wouldn't be able to get to the tournament.

  • Remember the New Guy?: They have never been mentioned before they were created for the Robin (2021) series.

First Appearance: 2021, Robin (2021) #8
An avatar of the Lazarus Pits and the true champion of the League of Lazarus.
  • The Assimilator: He's powered up by killing other strong fighters, with the whole purpose of the Lazarus Tournament being to gather enough fighters for it to consume and become strong enough to be a Beast of the Apocalypse. It's stopped before it can do it though.
  • Beast of the Apocalypse: Mother Soul at least believes the Lazarus Demon will purge the whole Earth once it gathers enough strength, but Damian and the other contestants kill it before it can absorb enough fighters to reach full strength.
  • Breath Weapon: It's capable of breathing a stream of green fire.
  • Elemental Embodiment: He's a demonic avatar of the Lazarus Pits, with most of its body made of the same substance that the Pits and made of.
  • Harmful to Touch: His liquid skin burns anything it touches, making it particularly hard to fight unarmed.
  • Off with His Head!: He's defeated when Respawn wraps his chains around his neck, and with the combined help of Ravager, Flatline and Damian, they manage to pull the chain with enough force to tear its head off.
