    Main Characters

Jin Kazaragi

  • Badass Pacifist: Most of the time, he doesn't want to fight, and prefers to resolve things without violence. It doesn't always work, though.
  • Barbarian Long Hair: For all it's badassery, he has the hair to pull it off without being Bishōnen. He later gets a haircut by Enki.
  • It's All My Fault: Jin is apparently responsible for the Lotus Flower incident, the worst Altered terrorist attack in history and the reason why Area D exists. When confronted about it, he says that it's because of his existence that it happened.
  • Oblivious to Love: He doesn't notice that Enki is head-over-heels for him.
  • Phlebotinum Rebel: Jin was kidnapped at a young age and altered due to his abilities as one of the first Altered.
  • Power Copying: His ability. It has some drawbacks, like him being only able to copy/store one ability at a time, even though he can choose which one he keeps. He also needs to touch the target's skin to copy their abilities, so he's useless when they're heavily clothed or he somehow can't touch them.
    • Instant Expert / Awesomeness by Analysis: He's able to use a copied skill near perfectly, even when he's just acquired it, and able to break down abilities used by others by trial-and-error.
  • Sadistic Choice: What the Ubersmench Union forces him into after kidnapping Satoru and Mika: Either kill the 3 Leaders, or have Mika and Satoru killed.
  • When He Smiles: Normally frowns or mantains a poker face, so when he smiles, it's warm. Satoru even comments on it, saying it's rare to see him smile.

Satoru Ida

  • Heart Is an Awesome Power: It is later revealed to affect "anything", including humans. Not only that, but the effect of the ability seems to be almost instant, even on large targets.
  • Power Incontinence: Satoru's ability is actually incredibly powerful, he just subconsciously sealed most of it away after accidentally killing his mom.

Kaito Yuuki

Rio Ibuki

  • Ms. Fanservice: Mainly thanks to leaving her clothes behind whenever she uses her powers.
  • Paper People: According to Rio, her ability, Shadow Play, turns her into this. It allows her to turn into a two-dimensional shadow that can travel along the surface of any object.
  • Shameless Fanservice Girl: Doesn't care the slightest bit about popping out of walls completely naked.

Mika Shindou

  • Hime Cut: She's an aversion because while she has the picture perfect style (even bangs, sidelocks and long hair) she doesn't have the associated personality traits or roles.

Soga

  • Back-Alley Doctor: Unlike usual examples, he's competent enough, and virtually everyone in the series knows him.
  • Body Horror: A positive example, as his ability, Operation Start, can manifest medical tools from his limbs.
  • Healing Hands: His ability, more or less. It's not exactly his hands that heal, but rather, the medical tools that he manifests in his arms.
  • My Greatest Failure: Failing to save his daughter from death, which lead to him reviving her.

Mariko

  • Back from the Dead: Died and was resurrected by an Altered, who also gave her powers. It was Soga, her father.
  • Character Development: She's entirely submissive and devoid of feelings at first, but becomes more "alive" as the story goes.

     East Territory

Kidou of the East

  • Determinator: Even after realizing he can't beat Jin, he refuses to give up.

Nanafushi

  • Power Copying: He can mimic the properties of materials, such as concrete or metal, by touching them.
  • Chameleon Camouflage: He becomes almost invisible when staying against material he has mimicked.
  • Full-Frontal Assault: His power doesn't work on his clothes, so in order to stay stealthy...
  • Super-Strength: His strength level depends on what material he has mimicked the properties of.
  • What Happened to the Mouse?: After apparently losing to Jin off-screen inside a burning building, his body was nowhere to be found, at least by Kidou's subordinates, and he disappears from the story.

Isobe Shun

  • Gravity Master: He can alter the weight of things around him.
  • Heel–Face Turn: Isobe is introduced as an Altered who wants to kill Jin because Jin is apparently responsible for the Lotus Flower incident, the terrorist attack that gave the anti-Altered movement the momentum it needed to start Area D, in which Isobe's beloved older sister was killed. However, after Jin saves his life, he comes to realize that despite how Jin blames himself for the Lotus Flower incident, he realizes what the readers do: Jin is not the kind of person who would do such a thing, and his wording of "The Lotus Flower incident happened because of me," most likely means that he was simply pivotal to the incident, but not willingly, and later becomes one of his most loyal friends.

     West Territory

Asura Saeki of the West

  • Freudian Excuse: As a child, her powers flooded her mind with memories of people dying.
  • No Eye in Magic: She can only use illusions once she's established eye contact.
  • Ghost Memory: She can trap others inside people's dying memories. Unfortunately for her, this meant that as a child, she was constantly flooded with memories of strangers prior to their death.

     South Territory

Goz of the South

  • Decoy Leader: Views himself as merely the representative of the South, and Luna and Sol as its true leaders.
  • Let's You and Him Fight: Forced into this situation against Jin by the Ubermensch Union. They are technically enemies, but it seems Goz wouldn't want to fight Jin if he wasn't forced to.
  • Let's Fight Like Gentlemen: While he attacks Jin right after the latter kills Asura, he makes sure that Jin copies his ability, knowing that Jin would recover from his injuries by doing so.
  • Lightning Bruiser / The Juggernaut: HOLY SHIT. He's the only one of the 3 Leaders that Jin doesn't kill, and it took A LOT of effort to even keep fighting him. In fact, Jin doesn't even defeat him; their fight is interrupted before it reaches that, even though Goz himself considers it a loss.
  • Specs of Awesome: That they can survive attacks that even Goz himself can't take unscathed just makes them that much more awesome.
  • Adaptive Ability: What his power actually is. As Goz is injured, his body transforms to be tougher, stronger and more suited for combat. This includes horns, wings, and the like.
  • Healing Factor: Every time his body transforms, previous injuries are healed.
  • Hulking Out: The more Goz's ability takes effect, the higher the chance he'll lose his mind to the fight.

Luna and Sol

     Ubermensch Union

Rei Kazaragi

  • The Corrupter: He can transform humans into Altered, or change an Altered's ability. The process is VERY painful anyway.

Owl's Eye

  • Ominous Owl: His head seems to be an owl, wings and all.
  • Razor Wind: His power. To be precise, he can cut through anything within his field of vision, regardless of the material.
  • The Heavy: Most of the series' current events were orchestrated by him kidnapping Jin's friends, thus forcing him to engage the heads of Area D's territories.

     Others

Warden Jiga

  • Calling Your Attacks: She calls one of her sword attacks when trying to intervene in Jin's and Goz's fight.
  • Clothing Damage: Suffers this when she tries to intervene in Jin's and Goz's fight, leading to her utter embarassment.
  • Kick the Dog: Revealing Jin's involvement in the Lotus Flower Incident in front of so many other inmates, painting a giant target on his head for the victims of said incident and then having the gall to pretend that "no one heard" was a real bitch move on her part. That, along with giving him and the others unprompted strikes on their cards as a "present".

Gajiro Molly

  • Dirty Old Man: Spends his time playing dating games. Also forced Rio, Mariko and Enki to cosplay for him.

Zero

  • Madness Mantra: Repeated a poem from a Brothers Grimm story over and over while waiting for Kaito.
  • Walking Armory: Carries dozens of knives, several grenades and two larger blades on his person.
