Find a Trope:
openBig character running behind normal sized character, causing a ruckus
Happens here in Avengers and here in Into the Spider-Verse. Even if there's no trope for it I'd still like to see any more examples if anyone has them.
Edited by Troper48openSideways Group Shot
What half of V-Formation Team Shot looks like when viewed from the side. Used to show a group of characters or their reactions to something.
Examples:
- Andi Mack
- Avengers: Endgame◊
- Avengers: Age of Ultron◊
- A moving version in the music video for Dommage by French musicians Bigflo & Oli
- Half of group Mirrored Confrontation Shot in Captain America Civil War poster◊
- DC's Legends of Tomorrow poster◊ and banner◊
- DC's Stargirl◊

openFormerly Skinny
Do we have a trope where a character used to be skinny? I'm not sure if Formerly Fit applies to some characters who got fit and healthy by getting weight gain.
openButting into a monologue while sneaking
Alice is sneaking around and finds something interesting. She may speak to herself or someone else about the finding, then Carol, who has something to do with it, answers Alice, making herself known and blowing Alice's cover
- SpongeBob SquarePants S 1 E 17 "Arrgh!" / "Rock Bottom": Spongebob and Patrick inspect the map and realize it's the game board. Mr. Krabs interjects, standing right behind them
- Batman: The Brave and the Bold episode "A Bat Divided!": Firestorm checks out the Batcave and muses about how not many people can say they've been in the Batcave. Physical Batman appears and says that that's because it's trespassing and proceeds to fight Firestorm
- LEGO Star Wars: The Freemaker Adventures: Zander is searching for scraps of Clone Wars-era tech and comes by an Imperial vehicle. He comments how it looks rather new for something from the Clone Wars, then a Stormtrooper appears and says "It's not!"
- Justice League Action: Red Superman comments that separating the remaining Justice League members won't be that easy. Batman makes himself known by responding "That's right. It won't"
openKurt Cobain lookalikes
Is there a trope for Kurt Cobain lookalikes. I’ve seen an overwhelming amount of Kurt Cobain lookalikes in cartoons before
openMain female character almost always being the daughter of a leader? Western Animation
Is there already a trope about this compulsion in most media (especially in most animation)?
For clarification, the "trope" I'm referring to is when the main female character of any given work is the daughter of a leading figure (who is almost always their father) of an important group, which typically is the reason for the female character's importance to the story. Princesses, The Chief's Daughter, and other "daughters of country leaders" are the most prominent and prime example, but this also includes "daughter of the police chief/commissioner" (Barbara Gordon, Gwen Stacy), "daughter of the military captain/commander", and "daughter of lead scientist". Basically, the main female character's importance is defined by their father rather than themselves, or their father is made a leading figure to make them more important than they already were (such as Rio 2 having Jewel's father be the patriarch of the remaining group of Spix Macaws).
Granted, I guess this is also common among male main characters, but feels to me like this happens with the girls much more often.
Edited by KaoticKanineopenNo Title
Is there a trope for when the same door can open to multiple locations depending on things like what key it's opened with and stuff? The Keymaster from the Matrix series, Moody's seven-locked trunk, that kind of thing.
openLaughing at names Western Animation
In the Ice Age Christmas special, A Mammoth Christmas, Crash and Eddie laughed so hard when they knew the names of Prancer and Blitzen, two of Santa's reindeers. I did some Googling and I think 'prancer' means someone who dances in an energetic way (similar to a horse), and I think 'blitzen' is related to shining, somehow. I don't think it's a punny name, is it?
You can see that part here: https://youtu.be/BPnlwgqNhy8?t=15
openSupporting cast doesn't cross-over Print Comic
It's common for superheroes to show up in each other's comics, but their non-super supporting cast usually doesn't. So the Fantastic Four might show up briefly in an issue of The Amazing Spider-Man, but their mailman Willie Lumpkin never does.
Is that a trope? (Please note that what I'm talking about is the kind of cross-over where it's not a team-up book; I mean where it's clearly one character's, or one team's, book.)
openTropes for post apocalyptic bunkers?
Specifically like, using sheltered, completely abandoned places as hideouts during post apocalyptic events? (Doesn't even have to be specifically during the apocalypse)
Edited by TheMageofRacismopenNo Title
A trivia item wherein an event in the story is based on an event in the author's life.
I wanted to say it's Write What You Know, but the description of that seems to suggest that it's about the author writing about their interest or hobby which is portrayed very accurately as a result.
openTrivia trope(?) about passing off a fabricated promotional material as part of the work.
This was added to Trivia.Close Enough:
- Red Herring: According to J.G., the trailer which aired at Comic Con back in 2017 was actually a decoy made to sell the series, edited to look as if they were snippets from various episodes.
It's obviously not Red Herring, but I don't actually know what it is specifically. Any ideas?
openClickbait, but in print media
Is there something to describe the the print media using a rather shocking title to report rather mundane content?
In my specific case, the School Newspaper News Hound is writing a report on some students' experience to a relatively prestigious science summer camp. The content is relatively mundane, but they decided to title it "Reveal: Truth of the Gigantic Dish at [place]!" (It's a radio telescope.)
openThe Weird One
A trope for a character who isn't bullied or ostracized as with All of the Other Reindeer, but has so many issues or weird habits that no one wants to deal with him (works for both kids and adults).
Edited by Chabal2openTechnically true letter
Alice is reading a letter from Bob. The letter makes it seem Bob is having the time of his life, but we the audience are shown what Bob is actually doing and while Bob hasn't lied, his letter turns out to be true only in a technical sense.
Example: "Dear Alice, I hope you are doing well. I have been having a great time adventuring, slaying fiends, helping locals, exploring long-forgotten tombs..."
[cut to Bob playing Dungeons and Dragons]
openSchlub Seduction Realization
A trope where a male character is stunned and horrified to discover women flirted/slept with him not because of his attractiveness (he's often a Kavorka Man or case of Ugly Guy, Hot Wife) but because of the benefits he provided (money, promotions, connections, information, etc.). Can be played for drama (depending on how deluded the guy was) or laughs.
He also gets No Sympathy from either gender he complains to, their reactions usually being along the lines of Everyone Knew Already, What An Idiot or Did You Actually Believe...? (and from men who aren't seething with jealousy, told that he should be grateful for at least having gotten sex out of it).
Kind of like aSpearCounterpart to Am I Just a Toy to You?.
Edited by Chabal2openTherapeutic Simulation
The main character relives traumatic events in a virtual simulation for therapeutic reasons. The events that happen inside are almost always horrific, and things usually go wrong, unless the wrong things are part of the simulation.
Trauma Conga Line and fragmented memories (that the patient has to piece back together) are the most common tropes for this.
Example: The Accelerated World from Accel World.

Is there a trope for an attack in a video game (usually an RPG) that has to be charged up to use, regardless if the player or enemy is using it?
