Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

No to Rodrigo. His own son Cesare is worse than him since we even see him sack and slaughter a huge city at the end of Brotherhood.

Also is it true that Torquemada has thousands killed since his writeup makes no mention of that?

If so this might need an expansion.

I can expand that entry that include the thousands of deaths

re-write:

Discovery & 2016 film:Tomás de Torquemada'' is a member of the Templar Order and the overseer of the Spanish Inquisition, a brutal event that led to thousands being killed. Given a list of targets by Rodrigo Borgia to eliminate, he would also execute those who are not Christian. Torquemada later lays siege to Granada to kill Sultan Muhammad XII, potentially killing hundreds in the city. In the film, he kidnaps the Sultan's son and holds him hostage in exchange for the Apple of Eden, while making the son watch as he puts most of the Spanish Assassins to the stake to be burned alive.

Any-thoughts

Aye to the General, nay to Rodrigo.

What's the work?

"Sonic X is an anime based on the Sonic the Hedgehog video game series, mainly the Sonic Adventure series. It is the spinoff series closest to the game canon.

The series' first two seasons focus on Sonic and friends being transported to Earth, where they meet and befriend a boy named Chris. The second season mostly focuses on the re-tellings of Sonic Adventure, Sonic Adventure 2, and Sonic Battle, except with a few new human characters involved in the stories. The third season is Darker and Edgier and involves Sonic's crew trying to save the universe from the evil Metarex."

We're going to focus on one of the latter.

Who is Pale Bayleaf ? What he has done?

One of the four Metarex commanders under the leadership of Dark Oak (and helping him in his goal to have plants consume all organic life to ensure "order and tranquility"), Pale Bayleaf is a brilliant chessmater and diplomat whose politeness hides plenty of cruelty despite his somewhat low screentime.

On Planet Cascade, Pale Bayleaf made a deal with the remaining inhabitants of the planet (mainly its resistance against the Metarex) : Pale Bayleaf made the promise that if they were to deliver Eggman to Pale Bayleaf, then the Metarex would allow them to join them, so they could be spared.

When Eggman revealed he knew the resistance group's plan all along and out-gambitted them, Pale Bayleaf saw the pact as void and thus tried to kill the resistance group, Eggman, Shadow, Rouge and Molly (read, pretty much everyone present on the planet basically), succeeding with the latter and shooting her down, much to Rouge and Shadow's horror.

During an ambush on Sonic and his friends, Pale Bayleaf and Dark Narcissus show no hesitation in firing while their own troops are on the way, a move even their temporary ally Dr. Eggman found needlessly cruel.

Later on, Pale Bayleaf seemed to have given the resistance group a second chance, giving them the task of handing Pale Bayleaf a Chaos Emerald. The Emerald however, was fake (Which they did not know). As a result of this... He has them all fused inside trees that slowly drain and kill them. Despite them having betrayed Molly, Rouge and Shadow have nothing but sympathy and horror for them when they see the predicament Pale Bayleaf put them in.

Furthermore, Leon implies in the English dub that Pale Bayleaf would've never let them join even if the Emerald was real. To quote him:

Metarex... They fooled us all. They told us, we could be one of them... but they lied...

Later on, in the final battle, Pale Bayleaf and Black Narcissus fused with Dark Oak to form Final Mova and annihilate all non-plant life, but are defeated and obliterated by the heroes, at the well-known cost of Cosmo's life.

Heinousness?

Not only he's in Dark Oak's Knight Templar scheme to annihilate non-plant life, but compared to his fellow commanders he's easily the worst. Black Narcissus comes closest but fails the HS (not only some of his crimes are shared with Pale Bayleaf, but those he doesn't share with him — being horrible towards his hostages Chris and Cosmo, stabbing the former in a way that famously pissed off even the normally cool and cocky Sonic — aren't much compared to the shit Pale Bayleaf pulls in both scale and depravity).

Freudian Excuse? Redeeming qualities?

None that holds up. He shrugs off Red Pine and Yellow Zelkova's deaths — more interested in wondering about the circumstances of their deaths —, and while he's polite and respectful towards Dark Oak, nothing indicates a redeeming case of Undying Loyalty. The other Metarex — even Black Narcissus, who's willing to go behind Dark Oak's back to avenge Red Pine — gets a few humanizing moments while all of Pale Bayleaf's surprisingly low screentime is spent either showing him as a Faux Affably Evil schemer and condescending tool either showing him as a murderous and loathsome alien being. He doesn't even appears in the Metarex's backstory flashbacks, while Dark Oak and even Yellow Zelkova get that courtesy.

Any other mitigating factors?

Nah.

Verdict?

Up to you guys.

Preemptive writeup

  • Sonic X: Pale Bayleaf is one of the four Metarex commanders under Dark Oak and a brilliant chessmater and diplomat whose politeness hides cruelty and sadism. Working for Dark Oak to annihilate all non-plant life in the name of "tranquility and order", Pale Bayleaf manipulates Planet Cascade's resistance group into working for him to deliver Dr. Eggman to the Metarex. When Eggman reveals he knew all along about their plot against him, he attempts to kill him and the Cascade resistance — seeing their treaty as void —, killing Molly when she tries to attack him. When working with Eggman and Black Narcissus against Sonic and his friends, Pale Bayleaf and Black Narcissus doesn't hesitate to shoot their own troops so long as they can take down the enemy, a move even Eggman found pointlessly cruel. Tasking the Cascade resistance to find a Chaos Emerald, Pale Bayleaf locks them inside trees that slowly drain and kill them when they found a fake Chaos Emerald. Devoid of empathy even towards his fellow Metarex, Pale Bayleaf shrugged off Red Pine and Yellow Zelkova's deaths.

  • Seven Wonders (link): Both members of the Big Bad Duumvirate and the Arch-Enemies of Samus and Zelda respectively prove themselves to be equally evil:
    • Ridley proves himself to be just as monstrous as in canon. Ridley is the leader of the Space Pirates who have decimated many worlds in search of the Seven Wonders, including Samus', which includes Ridley eating Samus' own mother, and Pikachu's forest. Ridley arrives in the land of Hyrule, nearly killing Zelda and teaming up with Ganondorf so that he can get the triforce piece from him. When Ridley heads into space with Ganondorf, he sends the Space Pirates to Kong's village looking for the Seven Wonders. The Space Pirates would wage a brutal battle that ends with many of the villagers being killed. When Ridley arrives in the Mushroom Kingdom, a battle breaks out that ends with Ridley badly injuring Samus and intending to brutally kill her.
    • Ganondorf is stripped any of the honorable traits or redeeming qualities of his canon counterpart. In the past, Ganondorf pretended to work with the Royal Family before betraying and killing most of them, then took over Hyrule, causing Zelda to go into hiding for 7 years. Ganondorf was killed and sealed away, but in the present, had willingly offered himself up as a vessel for Ridley coming into Hyrule for the chance to be resurrected. When Ridley is killed, Ganondorf uses his power to come back to flesh and uses Ridley's undead body as his slave in combat. Ganondorf would attack Hyrule again, using Ridley as a distraction to kidnap the king of Hyrule. Ganondorf threatens to murder the king if Zelda and Samus do not give him the wonders they have, then kills him when they refuse.
  • Dragon Ball: The Magic Begins: In this unofficial adaptation of the Dragon Ball franchise, King Horn proves to be just as evil as the villains from the source material. Horn is an alien that seeks to collect several Dragon Pearls and use them to rule the universe. Horn starts off the film by massacring an entire village full of people, which adds up to hundreds to thousands of people. Horn then heads inside the temple and personally slaughters the dozens of monks guarding the Dragon Pearl and then steals it. Horn later threatens Monkey King's grandfather with death if they don't give him their dragon pearl. Horn then tries to kill them all by using the villagers as zombies.

The reason Seven Wonders is disambiguated is that the wikiword clashes with a Tabletop Game that currently has a page.
