Old Magnificent Bastard thread

Welcome to the Magnificent Bastard proposal thread! This is the thread where new Magnificent Bastard examples are vetted, approved, and written up. If you're looking for the general cleanup thread (for cuts, rewrites, expansions, and the like), please go here

Important: Before suggesting any new examples, please read the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List; if you have any questions, the odds are high they are answered there. Additionally, please check here for the earliest date a work can be discussed (usually two weeks from the U.S. release date) and whether the work has already been reserved by another user.

Here is how the process works:

    Process

  1. If you have a candidate to propose, you can simply come right in and propose them! If the character's run is brief, such as a single issue of a comic book, then a simple summary of their actions and any potential mitigating features will be enough; for longer-running candidates, an effortpost (EP) might be helpful for organizing the proposal. An EP is not outright required, but please be mindful that if a post becomes too clunky and unorganized, it can be very hard for other people to follow.

  2. After the proposal, there will be a 72-hour discussion and voting period, where people may ask questions and vote on the candidate. The number of upvotes must outnumber the downvotes by at least five for the character to be considered "approved".

  3. Three days after the proposal has been made, if the character has been approved, you may post the writeup (the text to be posted on the trope page itself) on the thread and send it to the drafts page. Your candidate will soon be added to the MB subpage. If the work has a page, you should add your candidate to the relevant YMMV page. Voila! It's that simple!

Outside of this process, we do have a few ground rules:

    Ground Rules

  1. To keep the thread moving at a reasonable pace, there are some restrictions on when a proposal can be made. There should only be a maximum of four EPs posted both per page and per hour to ensure that nothing gets lost in the shuffle; additionally, each individual troper should only be proposing or writing up characters from a maximum of three works at a time (from initial proposals to end of their voting period). If your proposal would fall outside of either of these guidelines, we'd like to ask you to please wait until they would fit within; feel free to type them up on an outside document, and then when the time comes, you can just copy, paste, and post!

  2. No plagiarism of any kind. This is a very serious matter site-wide, as the website could get in actual legal trouble over this; as a result, this can very quickly lead to mod intervention. This can take many different forms:
    1. Direct plagiarism, i.e. wholesale copying. This is not only the easiest to find, but is also the most likely to warrant quick moderator intervention. To be clear, quoting in some places is perfectly acceptable, but it has to be very clear you're quoting from something else and it cannot be anything longer than a sentence or two - if you're quoting an entire work summary from Wikipedia, no one is going to believe you've actually consumed the work, so even if you cite your source, your candidate will be downvoted anyway.
    2. Self-plagiarism. Even if you can prove that you wrote the same text in both places, the site itself can't contain any of the duplicated text. If you already wrote something once before, it's not too hard to write it a second time.
    3. Using another site's work as a template for a proposal. Just because you don't copy and paste something directly doesn't mean it's any harder to detect if you're basing parts or all of your proposal on text someone else wrote. To be clear, this doesn't violate site rules and won't lead to mod intervention, but just like if you directly plagiarize, no one will believe you've consumed the work if you're clearly basing your proposal on something else. This thread largely operates on the honor system, and tweaking someone else's work to pass it off as your own is one of the fastest ways to lose trust.

  3. Votes must be for specific candidates, meaning no blanket voting (i.e. "yes to everyone I missed").

  4. If you are the first person to downvote a candidate, please provide an explanation of why when you do so. We're here for discussions above all, and a hit-and-run downvote doesn't facilitate anything.

  5. If a work is already reserved by another user, please don't comment on the work or any potential characters worth discussion before the discussion date. We know how exciting it is when a work has a keeper that you're waiting to talk about, but it's not fair to the person who reserved the work who is just as excited to lead the discussion to see the discussion getting spoiled before they get to do it. On the other hand, if the reservation only has one name attached, shoot them a PM - they may be down for a collaboration, which will get you in on the fun as well!

  6. Please keep the thread on-topic. While discussing the trope is fun and we encourage people to enjoy it, questions like "who's your favorite MB" are off-topic and can lead to thumps. That's the kind of question to take to people's PMs if they're willing. Similarly, while we encourage friendliness and familiarity with other users, posts should always have some kind of thread-relevant purpose; for instance, if you want to wish someone a happy birthday, feel free to, but if it's the only thing in the post, it's off-topic and needs something else alongside it. Again, though, while we strive for a friendly atmosphere, this is not Facebook; life updates are fun, but unless they have some kind of impact on your thread participation, please do not bring it here - we have Yack Fest for that.

  7. Please refrain from asking anything along the lines of "How Did We Miss This One?" In almost every case, the answer is simply "No one thought about it before". This Is a Wiki where everyone has different interests, and the fact that people missed a particular candidate, even one that seems like a textbook example of a trope or a character who is particularly iconic in pop culture, means absolutely nothing. The question is disruptive, has a simple and consistent answer, and provides nothing to any discussion.

  8. If you are suspended from other parts of the website, it is still possible to participate!
    1. For users who are suspended from editing the wiki, you still have full access to this thread. You can propose candidates and write them up with no issues whatsoever; while you will have to ask someone else to post the entry to the relevant pages once it is done, all write-ups are considered thread-approved - as in, done by consensus - and thus doing so does not violate any rules regarding meatpuppeting.
    2. If you are suspended from the forums, your participation is limited but not impossible. It is still possible for a forum-suspended user to assist in creating the write-up for a character who has already been approved; as previously mentioned, write-ups are inherently considered a consensus-based edit and thus not tied to any one particular user. However, you can not assist in the proposal of a character; as a proposal is based around the forum rather than the wiki, doing so with a forum suspension qualifies as meatpuppeting.

  9. Please keep all discussions "in-house".
    1. What other wikis use for MB equivalents is irrelevant here.
    2. Please be wary of using other wikis, Fandom or otherwise, as sources of information. They are just as fallible as a site like Wikipedia in regards to accuracy because they can be edited by any user, just as this site can.
    3. Do not attempt to force a communication with an author in an attempt to gather evidence or settle a debate; besides the fact that this is a YMMV trope and thus author intent has variable weight depending on the circumstance, doing so may cross the line into drama exportation, which is prohibited site-wide.

If you would like to use an EP for your candidate, here's the general format. This format does not have to be followed exactly, but these are the main topics that need to be covered:

    Effortpost Template

What is the work?

This is a brief summary of the work you're going to discuss. We don't need a full plot summary here, just however much we need to understand going into the discussion — it can even be as simple as quoting the summary on the work's page.

Who is the candidate and what have they done?

This is essentially the character's biography — who they are, their story, their goals and methodology, and, preferably (though not required), what happens to the candidate at the end. It does not have to include every single thing they ever do — for some characters, we'd be here all day if that was the case — but it should include the highlights of their journey.

How are they Magnificent?

This is the point where you highlight the character's brilliance. How to they convey their intelligence and charm to the audience? What makes them stand out among the crowd? What are their goals and how do they go about accomplishing them? This part welcomes a lot of creative thinking — not everyone has to be a Machiavellian Diabolical Mastermind to be worth considering here! This is also the time to showcase how the character can think on their feet if it's necessary.

How are they a Bastard? How are they not too bad?

What kinds of moral lines is this character willing to cross for the sake of their goal? Are they willing to let innocents die? Start wars? Commit crimes? The character has to show some kind of unscrupulousness in order to count as a "Bastard". Notably, this character does not necessarily have to be the villain, and an Anti-Hero can cross the line if they're immoral enough, but they have to be immoral somehow.

This is also the section where you then state your case for why they're not too bad. Perhaps their good intentions help mitigate their crimes. Perhaps others are shown to be much worse than them. Perhaps they're prone to Pet the Dog moments or are even fighting on behalf of loved ones. Whatever the case, there are certain lines that an MB can't cross, but as long as their villainy is reasonable for their goal, they can be considered.

Final verdict?

This is where you post your final conclusion on the character in question. You can continue elaborating on your reasons or even just say a simple "yes" or "no"; at this point, we've heard everything we need to hear.

And that's everything you need to know. Welcome to the thread!

Speaking of Invincible (2021), it's been two weeks since Season 2 and... nobody new counts... yet.

There are plenty of wait-and-sees, as many potentials' arcs have yet to finish. Nothing new to add to Rudy or Titan's writeups btw; the former doesn't do much this season aside from getting used to his newfound humanity, and the latter doesn't make an appearance.

Would omni man be worth a shot now? Since Nolan has now got over his prejudice.

Like his vilain role is kinda mostly over for now

Yes to Ying, Yassen, and Kaguragi.

I find it interesting they gave Thaedus a bit of Adaptational Villainy, otherwise we are wait and see on everyone currently. Omni-Man in particular is in a rut right now so not much point in trying for him yet until he bounces back.

I may look over other potentials from the comic besides Thaedus.

What about comic Cecil? At least with everything he's in. He's probably worth a look.

I am back after a very long hiatus on posting EPs. Along with work, I'm also an artist now so that's been taking up time.

Here's one from Deltora Quest, candidate being Mother Brightly.

What is the work?

Here's a refresher. Set in the fantasy land of Deltora, home to seven tribes each with a mystical talisman. Long ago, the to-be first King of Deltora united the seven tribes and placed each of the seven gems into a single belt, where their combined power repelled the evil eldritch being known as the Shadow Lord, who had been trying to conquer Deltora. Over a millennia later, the Shadow Lord managed to plant spies in the palace to sabotage the royal family, eventually accumulating in dismantling the Belt and scattering the gems across the land. This allowed the Shadow Lord to finally reign over Deltora as a tyrant ruler that oppressed the people.

It is now up to a trio of heroes, Lief, Barda, and Jasmine, to journey across Deltora and reassemble the Belt and drive away the Shadow Lord once more.

Who is Mother Brightly and what has she done?

Mother Brightly is an agent of the Shadow Lord. She was appointed in Rithmere where she assisted in scouting potential warriors, who were then transported to the Shadowlands to be be drafted into their militia. She did so by holding the Rithmere Games in the Championship Inn, a gladiator style match where the competitors are made to fight one another in a tournament. Mother Brightly herself is thrilled by these fights and eagerly watches from her own private booth. After the tournament, the final competitor or team left standing would then be awarded with a large sum of gold coins.

The champions would then abruptly vanish after the Tournament, with Brightly spreading rumours that they ran off with their winnings. In reality, Brightly had been tricking the champions and been secretly delivering them into the hands of Grey Guards, the Shadow Lord's soldiers, who would bound and gag the champions and prepare to transport them to the Shadowlands.

This would go on for sometime before the disappearance of Champions would get noticed by the Resistance Leader, Doom, who would end up joining the Tournament in order to investigate. Coincidentally, the main trio end up joining the Tournament at the same time, oblivious to the shady going on. Mother Brightly would warmly greet the heroes, while telling them aside that they had become her favorites and she would be rooting for them, where the heroes would quickly warm up to her seeming kindness.

The heroes' involvement made Doom's investigation much more difficult, not wanting them to get put in danger, he attempted to sabotage the hero's attempts to participate by locking them in their room. But he is unsuccessful due to Mother Brightly chancing upon the heroes hanging a bed sheet out the window like a flag and unlocking their room in time.

The heroes compete in the tournament as planned, but only Jasmine makes it to the finals. Doom pulls another sabotage attempt, by having one of his allies, Dain (who is already up as an MB), spike several of the finalists drinks with sedative to rig which opponent he'd be fighting. However Jasmine dislikes the Queen Bee Honey provided and refuses to drink, causing all others but herself and Doom to faint. Jasmine ends up fighting Doom, where the small girl surprisingly triumphs over the taller man.

Mother Brightly congratulates the heroes as the victors, praising their fights, especially Jasmine. She awards the trio with their prize money, and even kindly offers to sell them any supplies they required.

She also cautions the heroes that they would likely be targeted by robbers and muggers due to the amount of money they were carrying, and offers to show them a secret passageway out so they could leave undetected.

The heroes are completely oblivious to the true motives behind her kindness, as they leave the secret exit... and walk right into an ambush and are captured by Grey Guards.

The trio are fortunately rescued by Doom, who sneaked passed the Grey Guards while they slept and unbound the heroes, and reveals his true identity to them.

Mother Brightly is not heard of from again for the rest of the series, with the only hint of her fate being that the Championship Inn later came under new ownership. It is unknown what happened to her, but it is likely she escaped as a Karma Houdini.

How is she Magnificent?

Mother Brightly has mastered the act of Bitch in Sheep's Clothing, completely fooling the heroes with her kindness and having them walk right into her waiting trap. She has also done this for countless other champions before them and delivered them straight into the hands of the Shadow Lord. It should be noted that the hero trio are very intelligent and often use their wits, so Brightly's acting ability is quite impressive.

Bitch? Too much?

While Brightly does run a gladiator style tournament, all of the fighters are willing participants who have fully consented and they are not death matches. So this side of her isn't too evil.

While she does trick champions to be transported to the Shadowlands, where they are either experimented on or made to fight in the Shadow Arena (which is a death match gladiatorial situation), it's never made clear if Brightly knows what goes on down there. Even the Grey Guards from the Shadowlands themselves are not privvy to many of its activities there, so there's no certainty that random agents in Deltora would be in the full know.

With all that in account, don't think this would be disqualifying for Brightly.

Final verdict?

I think she's a keeper.

Yea to Brightly.

Writeup for Chase.

Cyberpunk:

  • "The Chrome Berets": Kingpin Anastasia Chase is a brilliant criminal planner who runs almost all crime on Malagay Island after ascending from her position as a New York mobster. Using her connection to the government, Kingpin Chase manipulates both sides of the war for her own profit while avoiding prison and keeping power by being willing to confront much deadlier enemies without hesitation. Prepared for almost any eventuality thanks to her guards and lair full of traps, always willing to cut a deal, and capable of turning problems into advantages, Chase uses her hitmen to control the island's dealings and retains her spot as the top of the criminal pecking order, doing only what suits her interests the best.

Annnd an effortpost.

What's the work?
We're probably plenty familiar with Golden Kamuy by now. A manga focused around the rowdy crew of Saichi Sugimoto, a disgraced Japanese soldier from the Russo-Japanese War, as he and his allies hunt down a secret stash of gold. Most of the characters I've done so far have been long-recurring cast members... this one's a comparatively minor character who's nonetheless damn impressive. I give you... Boutarou the Pirate.

Who is Boutarou? What does he do?
Born Fusatarou Oosawa, Boutarou was rejected when his family fell ill and he was shunned. Unwilling to take this, Boutarou grew to dream of being a king—so that nobody could reject him or the family he made for himself, and he could have a great many children to leave a legacy. Becoming a Serial Killer who drowned people and stole their valuables, Boutarou nonetheless clung to his dream of someday being a king and having a beautiful family, even after imprisonment.

Encountering Sugimoto while they both hunt the gold, Boutarou and Sugimoto initially end up in battle with one another—this quickly changes when Boutarou sees his old friend Escape King Shiraishi at Sugimoto's side, and is talked down. When they are ambushed shortly after, and Boutarou and Sugimoto once again clash, Boutarou concedes to ally with them and even bonds with Sugimoto over their shared past of illness—only to betray them again shortly after, though they end up finally allied when both men stop locking horns. Using his knowledge and skills to guide them along, Boutarou helps the crew draw nearer to the gold by analyzing both the techniques used for logging in the forest and his knowledge of a serial killer. During a massive clash with enemy forces, Boutarou ends up watching as Sugimoto and Asirpa are caught in a flaming brewery. Unhesitantly, Boutarou—who's ended up quite fond of the crew—goes in to save Sugimoto and Asirpa. After rescuing Asirpa, Boutarou does his usual thing—betraying a weakened Sugimoto and striking him with a shovel, creating a fight that he has the advantage in this time. While in private with Asirpa, however, Boutarou admits that he's willing to play the villain in this instance: He not only wants to build his own empire with the gold, but legitimately fears that Asirpa and Sugimoto will part ways if they find the gold, before telling Asirpa to go home and live happily with Sugimoto. When Koito ambushes them, Boutarou swings his head around to get his long hair in Koito's eyes and fights back, only to seemingly retreat after being wounded by Koito.

While Koito is certain he's secured Asirpa, Boutarou ambushes him, having faked his retreat. Though he's outnumbered, Boutarou still manages to once again escape this confrontation alive. Escaping the brewery entirely, Boutarou's first thought is that he has to save Asirpa, only for Sugimoto and Boutarou to clash once again—though Boutarou quickly makes amends by bringing them a car with which to pursue Asirpa's kidnappers. In the last fight of his life, the wounded Boutarou manages to drive them back into the thick of things and takes a brutal parting shot for Shiraishi. Boutarou quietly and calmly faces Shiraishi in his final moments, telling him to live his life as something more than someone who runs away, and then asking Shiraishi to tell his children of Boutarou, so that his legacy could live on—oh, and telling Shiraishi that he'd figured out the gold's location on his own just before dying.

Is Boutarou magnificent?
By all means. He was a brilliant criminal and murderer who stole people's valuables for years, he's perpetually Affably Evil with a genuine dream, A Father to His Men, and is an improvising master who regularly uses unorthodox tactics to catch his foes off guard as well as analyzing their personalities to find weaknesses. Not to mention he's a good liar, has genuine standards, and—as is ultimately established—discovered the gold's location far before anyone else, though he never tells Shiraishi before dying. He's consistently composed and dignified despite being treacherous.

Is Boutarou bad? Too bad?
Boutarou has over fifty murders on his hands, and makes sure to remind the audience those are only the ones he was convicted for, with the implication that he's committed many more. He also has no issue with treachery. That said, he's small potatoes compared to many of the 7th Division, and his bond with Sugimoto and Asirpa is genuine. He goes so far as to give his own life for the main trio in the end and only betrays them the final time because he wants their Family of Choice to stay together. He's a right bastard, but he's a lovable one with a tragic past and a lot of redeeming traits.

Conclusion?
Yessir.

Yes to Brightly and Boutarou.

What's the work?

X-Men: Evolution was a wild adaptation of the X-Men, featuring the titular heroes as high schoolers and the Brotherhood of Evil as their delinquent contemporaries.

In honor of a certain dashing rogue, I decided to take a look at one of the show's supporting villains.

Who is Gambit?

Formerly a thief adopted into a crime family, Gambit has the power to make whatever he touches blow up. He was exploited for his power for years on heists until he finally had enough and left, eventually joining Magneto's Acolytes—basically just the cooler, less stupid Brotherhood.

They're not the most fleshed out characters, but of Magneto's minions Gambit tends to be the most on-the-ball. He's always the one to break up in-fighting, and tends to last the longest in fights: whereas the rest of the Acolytes get their asses handed to them in their first confrontation with the X-Men, he manages to make it out relatively unscathed as he bombs the heroes with his explosive cards, even taking a moment to silently flirt with Rogue.

After the introduction of the Acolytes, Magneto sends Gambit to whip the Brotherhood into shape. After taking the time to intimidate some racist bullies, her confronts the Brotherhood at their house and proceeds to easily outmaneuver their attacks using their own furniture/trash—making the unstoppable Blob slip on an old pizza box, circumventing Avalanche's earthquake powers by grabbing onto their ceiling fan, and eventually just wrapping the Toad in a curtain and threatening to blow him up if they don't rescue Magneto's son, Quicksilver, leaving him in charge once they do.

His next appearances has him hypnotized by the villain Mesmero into stealing an artifact from the Angel, even then proving himself a badass as he evades all his security. Magneto catches up to them and frees Gambit, while the artifact turns into a spider monster that Magneto is tricked into believing must be destroyed lest the ancient mutant warlord Apocalypse be freed. The Acolytes are sent to stop the monster, and while the others get easily tossed aside due to their ingenious tactics of just hitting it real hard, Gambit plays it smarter. He gets ahead of the beast with a bus and runs it over, then blows up the bus, slowing it down long enough for Magneto to do his thing.

After sundry misadventures, the Acolytes are eventually disbanded and Gambit gets his own limelight episode. His adoptive dad has been taken hostage by a rival crime family, so he plans to trick Rogue into helping free him, kidnapping her and taking her to Louisiana. Through a combination of threatening to explode things if she attacks him, drawing connections to her own troubled history with adoptive parents, and claiming he only seeks to liberate her from her at-home issues like he did for himself so long ago, he gets the kindhearted Rogue invested in helping him. Sure enough, when they're inevitably attacked by the rival family, Rogue absorbs some of their memories and tags along with Gambit to navigate the mined swamps surrounding the crime family's base. They're spotted and shot at, of course, but Gambit has a dinghy prepared for them to quickly get on and escape whilst their other boat explodes and fakes their deaths.

In the confusion, Rogue touches Gambit and absorbs his memories, including those of his trickery, but she still decides to help, and they manage to bust his father out. The two part amicably despite everything, Gambit leaving her with his treasured queen of hearts. He doesn't appear in a major role for the rest of the show, but a vision of the future in the finale shows that he will eventually join the X-Men as a bona fide hero.

Is he magnificent?

Affably Evil and unrepentant thief, consistently portrayed as the most competent of Magneto's minions. Even after splitting from them, he remains a charming manipulator able to easily string Rogue along into helping save his dad, with his end goal being noble enough that she's willing to continue helping even after realizing she's been played.

Is he a bastard?

Professional thief and, in contrast to the likes of Colossus, is a completely willing subordinate to Magneto and his destructive goals.

Verdict?

Yes.

Working with his younger sister Suzume to obtain the OhgerCrownLance from Rcules, he gives it to Gira to allow him to win the duel for Shugoddam's throne before using the information he and Suzume obtained from their subterfuge to save Tikyu. During the Galactinsects threat, Kaguragi secretly collaborates with Rcules once again to secure him a place within the Galactinsects and arrange a situation where Dagded Dujardin grants Rcules the power to kill immortals, allowing the monarchs to have the power to kill their invaders permanently. After being supported by the citizens of Tikyu, who chose to fight with their monarchs, Kaguragi joins the other Kingohgers in destroying Dagded Dujardin once and for all, bringing true peace to Tikyu for the first time in 2,000 years.
