Old Magnificent Bastard thread

Welcome to the Magnificent Bastard proposal thread! This is the thread where new Magnificent Bastard examples are vetted, approved, and written up. If you're looking for the general cleanup thread (for cuts, rewrites, expansions, and the like), please go here

Important: Before suggesting any new examples, please read the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List; if you have any questions, the odds are high they are answered there. Additionally, please check here for the earliest date a work can be discussed (usually two weeks from the U.S. release date) and whether the work has already been reserved by another user.

Here is how the process works:

    Process

  1. If you have a candidate to propose, you can simply come right in and propose them! If the character's run is brief, such as a single issue of a comic book, then a simple summary of their actions and any potential mitigating features will be enough; for longer-running candidates, an effortpost (EP) might be helpful for organizing the proposal. An EP is not outright required, but please be mindful that if a post becomes too clunky and unorganized, it can be very hard for other people to follow.

  2. After the proposal, there will be a 72-hour discussion and voting period, where people may ask questions and vote on the candidate. The number of upvotes must outnumber the downvotes by at least five for the character to be considered "approved".

  3. Three days after the proposal has been made, if the character has been approved, you may post the writeup (the text to be posted on the trope page itself) on the thread and send it to the drafts page. Your candidate will soon be added to the MB subpage. If the work has a page, you should add your candidate to the relevant YMMV page. Voila! It's that simple!

Outside of this process, we do have a few ground rules:

    Ground Rules

  1. To keep the thread moving at a reasonable pace, there are some restrictions on when a proposal can be made. There should only be a maximum of four EPs posted both per page and per hour to ensure that nothing gets lost in the shuffle; additionally, each individual troper should only be proposing or writing up characters from a maximum of three works at a time (from initial proposals to end of their voting period). If your proposal would fall outside of either of these guidelines, we'd like to ask you to please wait until they would fit within; feel free to type them up on an outside document, and then when the time comes, you can just copy, paste, and post!

  2. No plagiarism of any kind. This is a very serious matter site-wide, as the website could get in actual legal trouble over this; as a result, this can very quickly lead to mod intervention. This can take many different forms:
    1. Direct plagiarism, i.e. wholesale copying. This is not only the easiest to find, but is also the most likely to warrant quick moderator intervention. To be clear, quoting in some places is perfectly acceptable, but it has to be very clear you're quoting from something else and it cannot be anything longer than a sentence or two - if you're quoting an entire work summary from Wikipedia, no one is going to believe you've actually consumed the work, so even if you cite your source, your candidate will be downvoted anyway.
    2. Self-plagiarism. Even if you can prove that you wrote the same text in both places, the site itself can't contain any of the duplicated text. If you already wrote something once before, it's not too hard to write it a second time.
    3. Using another site's work as a template for a proposal. Just because you don't copy and paste something directly doesn't mean it's any harder to detect if you're basing parts or all of your proposal on text someone else wrote. To be clear, this doesn't violate site rules and won't lead to mod intervention, but just like if you directly plagiarize, no one will believe you've consumed the work if you're clearly basing your proposal on something else. This thread largely operates on the honor system, and tweaking someone else's work to pass it off as your own is one of the fastest ways to lose trust.

  3. Votes must be for specific candidates, meaning no blanket voting (i.e. "yes to everyone I missed").

  4. If you are the first person to downvote a candidate, please provide an explanation of why when you do so. We're here for discussions above all, and a hit-and-run downvote doesn't facilitate anything.

  5. If a work is already reserved by another user, please don't comment on the work or any potential characters worth discussion before the discussion date. We know how exciting it is when a work has a keeper that you're waiting to talk about, but it's not fair to the person who reserved the work who is just as excited to lead the discussion to see the discussion getting spoiled before they get to do it. On the other hand, if the reservation only has one name attached, shoot them a PM - they may be down for a collaboration, which will get you in on the fun as well!

  6. Please keep the thread on-topic. While discussing the trope is fun and we encourage people to enjoy it, questions like "who's your favorite MB" are off-topic and can lead to thumps. That's the kind of question to take to people's PMs if they're willing. Similarly, while we encourage friendliness and familiarity with other users, posts should always have some kind of thread-relevant purpose; for instance, if you want to wish someone a happy birthday, feel free to, but if it's the only thing in the post, it's off-topic and needs something else alongside it. Again, though, while we strive for a friendly atmosphere, this is not Facebook; life updates are fun, but unless they have some kind of impact on your thread participation, please do not bring it here - we have Yack Fest for that.

  7. Please refrain from asking anything along the lines of "How Did We Miss This One?" In almost every case, the answer is simply "No one thought about it before". This Is a Wiki where everyone has different interests, and the fact that people missed a particular candidate, even one that seems like a textbook example of a trope or a character who is particularly iconic in pop culture, means absolutely nothing. The question is disruptive, has a simple and consistent answer, and provides nothing to any discussion.

  8. If you are suspended from other parts of the website, it is still possible to participate!
    1. For users who are suspended from editing the wiki, you still have full access to this thread. You can propose candidates and write them up with no issues whatsoever; while you will have to ask someone else to post the entry to the relevant pages once it is done, all write-ups are considered thread-approved - as in, done by consensus - and thus doing so does not violate any rules regarding meatpuppeting.
    2. If you are suspended from the forums, your participation is limited but not impossible. It is still possible for a forum-suspended user to assist in creating the write-up for a character who has already been approved; as previously mentioned, write-ups are inherently considered a consensus-based edit and thus not tied to any one particular user. However, you can not assist in the proposal of a character; as a proposal is based around the forum rather than the wiki, doing so with a forum suspension qualifies as meatpuppeting.

  9. Please keep all discussions "in-house".
    1. What other wikis use for MB equivalents is irrelevant here.
    2. Please be wary of using other wikis, Fandom or otherwise, as sources of information. They are just as fallible as a site like Wikipedia in regards to accuracy because they can be edited by any user, just as this site can.
    3. Do not attempt to force a communication with an author in an attempt to gather evidence or settle a debate; besides the fact that this is a YMMV trope and thus author intent has variable weight depending on the circumstance, doing so may cross the line into drama exportation, which is prohibited site-wide.

If you would like to use an EP for your candidate, here's the general format. This format does not have to be followed exactly, but these are the main topics that need to be covered:

    Effortpost Template

What is the work?

This is a brief summary of the work you're going to discuss. We don't need a full plot summary here, just however much we need to understand going into the discussion — it can even be as simple as quoting the summary on the work's page.

Who is the candidate and what have they done?

This is essentially the character's biography — who they are, their story, their goals and methodology, and, preferably (though not required), what happens to the candidate at the end. It does not have to include every single thing they ever do — for some characters, we'd be here all day if that was the case — but it should include the highlights of their journey.

How are they Magnificent?

This is the point where you highlight the character's brilliance. How to they convey their intelligence and charm to the audience? What makes them stand out among the crowd? What are their goals and how do they go about accomplishing them? This part welcomes a lot of creative thinking — not everyone has to be a Machiavellian Diabolical Mastermind to be worth considering here! This is also the time to showcase how the character can think on their feet if it's necessary.

How are they a Bastard? How are they not too bad?

What kinds of moral lines is this character willing to cross for the sake of their goal? Are they willing to let innocents die? Start wars? Commit crimes? The character has to show some kind of unscrupulousness in order to count as a "Bastard". Notably, this character does not necessarily have to be the villain, and an Anti-Hero can cross the line if they're immoral enough, but they have to be immoral somehow.

This is also the section where you then state your case for why they're not too bad. Perhaps their good intentions help mitigate their crimes. Perhaps others are shown to be much worse than them. Perhaps they're prone to Pet the Dog moments or are even fighting on behalf of loved ones. Whatever the case, there are certain lines that an MB can't cross, but as long as their villainy is reasonable for their goal, they can be considered.

Final verdict?

This is where you post your final conclusion on the character in question. You can continue elaborating on your reasons or even just say a simple "yes" or "no"; at this point, we've heard everything we need to hear.

And that's everything you need to know. Welcome to the thread!

[up] I won't stop you.

On an unrelated note, it's my birthday today! Next, I have another consecutive EP from Bravely Second. I already explained it in the EP for Whitson, so I'll be more brief here. The candidate in question is someone whose character arc ends in a Sidequest, despite debuting in the main quest. I'm not 100% sure that it'll be successful, but it's worth an honest attempt. I've been thinking about one for a long time now.

Who is Yoko?

Yoko is the holder of the Yokai asterisk who hides behind a dim-witted personality. In reality, she brings out the past traumas that others have experienced as a Secret Test of Character. She also has the power to erase entire locations from the world’s memories, as demonstrated with Caldisla, an island from the previous game. The Hero Yew Geneolgia is tested with whether or not he can bear someone losing what they love the most from the “Sword of the Brave”. She does this by creating a phantom called Danzaburo whom she pretends is her “Anisama”. Yoko even fabricates a story that’s deliberately similar to Yew’s Dark and Troubled Past to trigger a response from him, giving him the perfect chance to explain himself and prevent someone else from suffering the same pain as he once did (at least, as far as he’s aware). Yew fails the test, admitting that he was too much of a coward to reveal his past. She is a Stealth Mentor to the heroes.

There’s a subplot where Yoko was the carrier of The Plague which existed before the events of the first game, but the events surrounding that are largely (though not entirely) irrelevant to this EP.

Magnificence?

Yoko can peer into the hearts of anyone that she wants and reveal their greatest insecurities. When pressed on the matter, she admits that likes seeing whether someone comes out a better person, or is crushed by despair. That said, even after Yew fails his test, Yoko admits that she had enough fun to give the party a hint as to where to go next.

When she appears later in a sidequest, she gives the party fair warning that they might not be ready for what they learn. Edea is put through her own test when her loneliness towards the departure of her Love Interest Ringabel is brought out. She looks like she’s going to snap, only for Ringabel to pull a Big Damn Heroes moment and console her. In the end, while Edea is sad that he has to go again, she still pulls herself together and succeeds her father as Grand Marshal of Eternia.

Yew is put through a second test regarding the actions of his father Griede and ancestor Foundar (yes, those are their actual names). Unlike last time, Yew perseveres, and Yoko rewards him by telling him that they weren’t all bad and had redeeming qualities.

She’s also aware of how dangerous Anne, The Heavy of the story, can be if she were to come across the Great Chasm. This is why she erased the island of Caldisla (which is where the Great Chasm is located) from everyone’s memories. She only undoes the spell when the heroes urgently need a place to heal after a grueling Hopeless Boss Fight. Sure enough, Anne uses the chasm to summon Ba’als to cause mayhem.

Is she a Bitch? Too Much?

Enough to count, but I don’t think that it’s too much. Yoko admits that most people who fail to come out as better people end up with a Fate Worse than Death. While the party is given ample warning in advance, she’s still risking their mental health in an attempt to perfect them. Said attempt ends with a boss fight. Ringabel seems to consider her to be a high-level threat that must be stopped since she’s a Villain of Another Story (though the game does not elaborate on this).

After her defeat, the player can fight some Optional Bosses throughout the world of Luxendarc. When you beat them all, you get a message from Yoko:

Yoko: “To my ever-loyal Minister of the Right. Keep up the hard workand thanks for all the croissants…”

Any Mitigating Factors?

She doesn’t do anything especially heinous onscreen (especially if you consider Dr. Qada from the first game), and the party comes to respect her despite her actions.

Final Verdict

Does she count? Up to you.

Yes to Yoko and Tinkerer - again!

Hey guys, sorry this is late; I guess I was a bit Tekkend out as it were. But now tis time for my final EP from this franchise for now. And it's unusual, because it's not from the game itself, but a cinematic trailer.

Who is she? What has she done?

Once upon a time, there was a Kunoichi that served in the Manji Clan under Yoshimitsu - Kunimtisu. A skilled thief, she betrayed the clan and tried to steal his cursed blade Yoshimitsu (bearing the same name) so her grandfather could make a replica of the blade. She failed.

But we aren't talking about her. We’re talking her daughter.

Kunimitsu II is even more skilled than her mother, and one day, while taken ill, Mummy Kuni tells Daughter Kuni about her not being able to procure the blade. So, Kuni II goes off to get it. She does some wacky stuff like infiltrating the Mishima Polytechnic School and finding its a secret Tekken Force training facility, but we are not actually discussing the game. Because Tekken 7 liked doing its trailers in the style of non canon short films, telling little stories. Kunimitsus can be found here: youtube.com/watch?v=bxof9Kj6mN4

(By the by, my account is limited with links, so Id recommend copy and pasting this into the address bar.)

In it, Kunimitsu II effortlessly defeats Master Raven to lure Yoshimitsu into a one on one fight. Hiding her face and using showy and distracting techniques, Kunimitsu defeats Yoshi, only removing her mask and revealing her identity upon winning. She takes the blade, Yoshimitsu only able to grumble over the loss.

Magnificent? B?

Its a short EP for a short trailer, but for what it’s worth shes got the cred. She is a thief and might have killed Master Raven, it is not clear, and she basically pulls out all the stops to defeat Yoshimitsu whom she lured to her by defeating Master Raven then hiding until he turned up. She also one ups her mother by winning. The story of the trailer is non-canon, so it can be mostly taken as its own thing.

I wouldn't nominate Kuni II from the main games yet, because all we have is All There in the Manual. Same for her mother, more or less. I would like to do both one day, but for now I got nothing. But the trailer version?

Conclusion

Easy Keep I would say.

      • Sir Bernhart Muntzer is a member of the Valkanier Royal Guard, who shows why he's considered one of his country's best and a dangerous foe to face. A quiet man with great skill in combat and tactics, Muntzer manages to lay a successful siege upon Dulkheim's military base with strategic prowess, capturing Vallery for his country's magic research before winning him over as one of his soldiers. Running into him after escaping Dulkheim, Muntzer shows he's actually a very kind man and father to his family and men with a sense of justice, even saving Crevanille's group from bandits. However when Valkania decided to turn on Marquelay and Ordineil for its wealth, Muntzer despite feeling conflicted remained loyal to his king, leading the fight against them, even putting his fellow Royal Guard Aplphone to a corner and came close to winning.
      • Bryntir is a mysterious man who seems connected to Crevanille and Freya before being later revealed as a master manipulator setting things behind the scenes to defeat The Angel, Akyel and Vester, for the sake of his siblings. A renowned military officer in Dulkheim, Bryntir uses the army to investigate ruins for info against those threatening the world. Showing up throughout the game as an ambiguous force in the conflict, Bryntir does what he believes is necessary to stop his enemies, even trying to kill Maggie. After gaining the info needed to stop the Angels and guiding Crevanille and Freya with the notes he left behind, Bryntir helps them put a stop to Akyels rampage, sacrificing his own life to help defeat him. A man who does not care about being branded a traitor, Bryntir would do anything for the sake of his brother and sister.
    • V: Heritage of War:
      • Commander Seldous, leader of PMB, is the first progenitor of peace, ending a century war. War orphaned, Seldous with Vanette and Isaac sought an ancient weapon to force peace in the world, building the Admonisher to force a ceasefire after annihiliating an entire battlefield, creating the PMB to enforce non-war. Maintaining peace for decades with leadership and power, when hostility began appearing, Seldous help control it, tempering other kingdoms, and helping Haschen eliminate loose ends, ending in him sacrificing himself and the Admonisher to help beat the Queen Screaper, imparting the path to true peace.
      • General Rockbein is the beloved war hero of Neylern who initiated a complex plan to bring indepedence to his people. Leading a rebellion against Grangale and the PMB, Rockbein sought his own ancient weapon to defeat the two, forming a web of espionage to find it. Discovering Ziekwald a bio-weapon that can defeat both nations, Rockbein worked with Pernagi to resurrect him, using the PMB's Admonisher to free it with himself as bait to fool them, laying out schemes after his demise so Neylern would win as his rebellion carry on, nearly coming out victorious through excellent foresight, and still achieving his goal with his war forcing the others to acknowledge Neylern's freedom.

Back when Breezie from the Archie Sonic comics was proposed and approved by the thread, an image of her was suggested and gained quite a positive response from those who saw it, but wasn't put on the image links page.

Furthermore, back when MagnificentBastard.Spider Man was created, an Image Picking thread was created to pick a good image for the page and I feel that the other suggested images could be good images for the Image Links page.

I ask the thread if we could create a sandbox for ImageLinks.Magnificent Bastard that we could use to add images suggested on the thread to the image links page like on the Complete Monster thread, since the image links page is kind of a ghost town compared to the Complete Monster page and adding some more good images would spice it up imo.

So I've remembered that back in December my mom got me to watch Candy Cane Lane for Christmas and while it really sucked, I was getting interested on its villain, Pepper, as she was seeming to fit the bill for this at first. An elf who worked for Santa's workshop until she was exiled, she had now set a pop-up store where the protagonist Chris Carver buys a Christmas decoration by making a deal with her, which he then discovers was a trap to make him (supposedly) appreciate the True Meaning of Christmas, as he now had to collect a series of golden rings or he would be turned into a living glass figurine.

For most of the movie, Pepper is coming as a pretty good planner, even doing some cheating against Chris and his family so they don't succeed at collecting the rings, and while she does come as kind of petty at times, none of it felt that bad…

Until the ending, where it seems like the Carvers have failed at collecting two more rings before the time was up and she won, but then black Santa appears and says that the Carvers have succeeded because apparently Chris and his wife's wedding rings counted as rings and so Pepper is the one who lost and.. she throws a very hissy and childish fit about how it's totally not fair and… she just really loses her composure there. And then there's The Stinger, where we see black Santa having turned Pepper into a living ornament and it's kind of played as a humiliating defeat, so there's that too.

So yeah, she was coming close to this during most of the movie, but then really dropped the ball by the end.

Just leaving this here in case anyone wants to look up discussion of this movie on the search bar some day.

I am indeed all for a page. I also wonder about the formatting, like, should we have a Mishima tree to keep the clan altogether? So it'd be Heihachi or Kazuya first, then Lee, then Jin then Reina. After that, Nina, Armour King II and Kunimitsu II?

Also, should Heihachi or Kazuya go first? On the Tekken TV Tropes Character index, Kazuya is first. So maybe that's how it should be done? I can go either way.

And there's probably some more myself and mir haven't found yet - though I'm sad to see Heihachi cannot count in the Live Action Movie cause of the prequel, cause Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa sells the role.

A Colombian Drug Lord and the poster child for Addiction-Powered, SNOWFLAME is the villain of Issue 2. And by far the most infamous and beloved part of this dumb book. For you see, SNOWFLAME gains his powers from snorting Cocaine. And he's awesome.

Easily defeating Ram in a one on one fight, SNOWFLAME mentions he is a busy man that while he would love to keep playing, he has more important issues to deal with and declares he never travels the jungle alone and orders his men, hidden from sight, to gun down the New Guardians. He also decrees they be buried with their full affects, and that they honour the dead in his jungle. But the New Guardians somehow survive and return for round two, neutralising the guards around his mansion lair. The shock will not deter SNOWFLAME, as he snorts a whole pile of white to supercharge himself - while at the same time siccing his drugged up possy on the team, whom see SNOWFLAME as divine. They are cured thanks to Plant Man shenanigans.

Ram tackles SNOWFLAME into the pool, hoping to cool his white flames - but it is not enough!

Alas, SNOWFLAME is Too Cool to Live. Ram uppercuts him into his chemical shed, blowing it and him up.

Good night, sweet prince…

OR IS HE DEAD???

Magnificent?

For a one shot villain I genuinely believe so. SNOWFLAME is absurdly charismatic, far more than the loser heroes. He is smart and honourable and quick on his feet in wits and good at thinking ahead. Like, the comic seems blissfully unaware of how silly this is, and it only makes SNOWFLAME funnier and cooler.

His minions are seemingly genuinely loyal, with his party goers being so high they are willing to throw themselves at the New Guardians until Floro absorbs their cocaine. At which point they are happy to be free.

Because Cocaine makes you a cultish fanatic I guess - I did mention this comic bungles its social commentary. Oh and they consider the New Guardians gods after overcoming Snowflame and Cocaine, whom they had worshipped before - this comic is glorious.

Also he would have won but the New Guardians survived being shot because shut up.

Bastard?

Drug Lord. Kills people. Coked out folks Pretty generic stuff. They dont veer into the skeevier parts of Drug Dealing. So hes fine here.

Mitigations?

So there's a weird bit when facing Ram that SNOWFLAME taunts Ram by saying he isn't hiding his anger and that "your people" are meant to be inscrutable. I'm not sure if this is meant to be racist or just the comic being outdated, cause Ram himself is stereotyped as wanting to "avenge his honour" so I'm gonna chalk this up to Values Dissonance on the writers part. And Ram himself seems to take no offence here, simply offering a generic "let’s finish this!" SNOWFLAME also calls him warrior. Yeah I have no clue if it’s meant to be a term of respect or not. - hell he could be referring to his "people" as him being a cyborg for all I can tell.

He also says to bury the New Guardians before they begin to “stink” which seems like a diss, but then he makes a point of burying them with their effects and how they respect the dead, so whatever I guess.

And he also calls them freaks twice when he first meets them. Considering the plant guy and the silicon chip guy maybe he has a point.

Anything else weird?

So, decades later, SNOWFLAME was brought back in New 52 issue of Catwoman. Hes still SNOWFLAME, but more cowardly and skeevier in his practices. He is apparently killed by a big Puma.

He then comes back later fighting Peacemaker. He tries to power up during the fight by snorting a big pile of Cocaine, only to get a poison frog up his nose, apparently killing him. Again. Yeah, I expect him back eventually.

So, while this is meant to be the same Snowflame he's A) written by entirely different people 2) he appeared in Catwoman decades after his first apparent death and Gamma) The New Guardians Issue 2 was written during the Post Crisis Era, while Snowflame’s later appearances is after the New 52 Reboot. I'm happy keeping these versions separate myself.

Conclusion?

Snowflame is stealing your shoes!
