The main concern of a Hate Sink is whether the narrative treats the character as someone intended to be despised.

The character in question must actually display detestable qualities, and be hated by other characters at least, or treated by the narrative like someone you are supposed to hate. The author's declared intent cements an example, but is not needed if the narrative itself treats the character as someone who is supposed to be hated.

A Hate Sink may have charismatic traits, a troubled past, or complexity, but in order for this trope to be in effect, such traits must be de-emphasized by the narrative in favour of their detestable traits.

Please note that we do not use Effort Posts.

At the rate this is going, I'm not sure if I can keep up with the pending write up list (especially since weekdays tend to be long workdays for me in the near future).

I guess... the issue is that he exists mostly to punish the Hate Sink but I don't know about it so uh...

Though another guy to keep in mind for Hate Sink list in later future... Motoyasu Kitamura. Just E Ping Malty because of her rather nasty reputation she got on the Anime Community especially on Discord, Reddit or Facebook.

Any more votes for her and Yuuto?

That said, you are doing very well so far, and I don't think now is the time to give up altogether.

My first Hate Sink entries.

  • Judy, a spinoff short of Sleepaway Camp; Serial Killer Angela Baker of the main films can Affably Evil with a tragic backstory; and Judy is a well intentioned vigilante despite her past as a Love to Hate Alpha Bitch. This leaves us with Jack, a target in Judy's crusade against Abusive Parents. Jack is a man who openly neglects his ex wife and son, laughs at his sons bullying and hospitalization despite it nearly killing him. On top of that he openly sexually abusing his stepdaughter Jamie. When Judy tortures him for his abuse, Jack is completely unrepentant, cowardly trying to justify himself and arrogantly acting like he's untouchable.
  • Teeth: Dawn's stepbrother is a real piece of work. It's one thing to be a leachy slob, it's another to be abusive to your girlfriend, openly lust after your stepsister since childhood. When Dawn's mother is dying a slow and painful death, Brad leaves her to die to have sex with his girlfriend. When his dad finally tries to throw him out, Brad turns the tables on him with a gun and sicing a dog on him. When his dad asks if he's upset about his mother, Brad says he doesn't even remember her and just wants to lay Dawn.

How do they work ?

"It's like...a cliff, and if I do it, I'm just gonna...fall." "I think we're already falling."

Cut out the parts about whom you are NOT supposed to hate, and pretend that you are writing drafts for a monster entry, except you give examples of why a character is despicable.

@Sky Cat 32 I refer to pending write up list. It's one thing to place the newly minted drafts on to the main page. But a bit more tedious to track down every approved Hate Sink and now we wait for a writeup.

Additionally, once we are done sorting examples alphabetically and purging them, I suggest you request a lock on the Hate Sink pages so that this cleanup won't be for naught.

[tup] Malty/Myne/Bitch

There's a subreddit about her called r/fuckmyne, and it's clear she's intentionally meant to be hated.

Tthe Jo Jo Part 5 Green Day arc finishes in 1 week so unless the fight's pacing in the anime is bad, in 2 weeks I'll effortpost Cioccolata. BTW the anime seems to be making him even worse.

Also there's this entry for Diavolo

  • Hate Sink: Out of all the Big Bads in the franchise, Diavolo stands out as the most ruthless and irredeemable of the lot alongside DIO. But while DIO's over-the-top villainy and a genuine yet twisted sense of honour bring more depth to him, Diavolo lacks such traits and he remains the same heartless monster he had always been. His cruel treatment of his subordinates, willingness to murder his own innocent daughter who would have meant him no harm otherwise, and personally murdering four of the heroes, all make him as contemptible as much as possible.

I personally think King Crimson is way too cool and badass as a stand for him to count, but I'm not sure if this was done by one of you lot.

Found this on "Hate Sink" Game of Thrones page:

Stannis Baratheon develops more and more into this as the story goes. First, he starts as a Jerkass who will do anything to be king and refuses to cooperate with anybody who doesn't consider him as a king even when they have a common enemy. Admittedly, he is a rightful heir so his motives, can be seen as somewhat understandable. But what really seals his fate as this, is that his greed combined with religious fanaticism causes him to sacrifice his own daughter, probably the sweetest character in the entire series.

Stannis never struck me as an outright Hate Sink, so i want to ask was he discussed actually?

We may need to reassess them all. But for sure, Joffrey, Lord Ramsay, and the mountain can stay. Also, I think that 7 should be the minimum number of entries on a given page. The entries for the James Bond page should be moved to their respective movies.

HateSink.Anime And Manga

  • Cross Ange:
    • Julio Asuka Misurugi is jealous of his sister, the protagonist Angelise, is favored over him by his parents and the people, so what does he do? Outs her as a norma, a person who cannot use mana and is shunned by society, on the day of her sixteenth birthday and baptism ritual, resulting in her being stripped of all rights and personhood and being sent to a prison colony where she is forced into becoming Cannon Fodder against dragons in hopes of having her killed off, just so he can take over as Emperor. When he learns she hasn't died yet, he has her lured out so he can publicly execute her himself, and had their father executed in the meantime. When the execution fails and she escapes, he leads a purge of the norma in order to get rid of her once and for all. When Ange finally corners him from the Vilkiss, he breaks down like a coward and tries bargaining with Ange, who is so infuriated she goes back on a deal not to kill him after he calls off the massacre, only for Embryo to off him instead. Julio is squarely on this trope that in Super Robot Wars games that included this series, he's always portrayed as a pathetic, uncharismatic leader that drove the Misurugi Empire to the ground and didn't win any favors from even other villainous forces from other series, that players couldn't help but feel Catharsis Factor whenever he met his end, however it is.
    • Embryo himself qualifies as he is an Omnicidal Maniac who wants to kill everything that has no use for him and has done practically every crime in the book. He casually discards his allies and uses them as decoys and mind-rapes and tortures everyone. He is also just as racist as Julio himself as he believes the Ancient Humans should all be wiped off as he considers them a disease. He takes pleasure in trying to force Ange to love him through rape and wiped off Elektra's forces while raping her mind and body all because he didn't like the love she had for him and he doesn't care if children die. He counts as this In-Universe too as he has a 0% Approval Rating meaning no character in the show likes him and any that do end up having a Heel–Face Turn after realising how bad he is.
    • Although they were the result of Embryo's machinations and Julio was a standout example of them, the whole community of Mana users except Momoka (and possibly Misty) counts as a community of Hate Sink. They were portrayed as unrepentant Dirty Coward that acts high and mighty because they had Mana, and promote racism and prejudice against Norma without any reasons or ascending above such notions (something that Momoka managed to do). They were quick to turn against any positive emotions towards anyone that was revealed to be a Norma, even Hilda's mother, despite trying to rescue her from being detained in the past, quickly disowned her when she bore another Mana-using child. When they revealed their true colors, Ange was beyond disgusted that she used to be one of them and believed in them, calling them disgusting, evil pigs. When they were losing their Mana source, they demand Ange, that they just persecuted shamelessly awhile ago, to rescue them. At this point, for Ange and a lot of the viewers, them being pawns of Embryo's machinations no longer mattered, they haven't learned their lessons like a bunch of Spoiled Brat, so Ange headshotted one of them, told them that she no longer cared about them and they can just go die if they want to keep acting pampered and high and mighty like before, karma hit them like a truck for their bigoted prejudice and not rising above it.

Julio definitely counts: His obsessions make him a monstrous even by his cultures standards, he's pathetic and lacks cool traits otherwise, and exists because the conflict is caused by social institutions and (at the time) faceless monsters so we need an individual to root against.

Embryo, two issues: 1. He has Evil Is Cool traits (god powers, mech pilot, backstory suggesting he once had noble intent, enough fake politeness and style to hide his depravity) that a Hate Sink entry should explain how he ultimately subverts. 2. As the only remaining villain, his narrative role would be unchanged if he weren't so vile, so why make him so? (A reason would establish it's intentional.)

Mana user I say cut since it admits they have a mitigating factor in being culturally conditioned as such, and if everyone's hated, how can anyone stand out enough to count? I say disqualify them since they are the baseline for which the Hate Sinks have to be vile compared to. (For this baseline reason, I'm dicey about counting whole groups or main villains, an exception being the Goblins from Goblin Slayer since they're vile and uncool compared to the other monsters in the setting and would be of little to no narrative relevance if this were a traditional fantasy story).

Thoughts?

[tup] Julio and Embryo

Embryo loses any Evil Is Cool moments because of his biggest crimes such as his Attempted Rape at the very end of the show and being an Omnicidal Maniac. Once he was fully revealed as such a big asshole I absolutely hated him and he's not a Villain with Good Publicity. Julio is just a racist asshole and Politically Incorrect Villain.

I'm pretty sure I wrote the original Hate Sink entry for Embryo way before this thread came up.[lol]

[up]Agreed, but we still have to explain how all the other traits are negated as Hate Sink isn't just performing vile acts, but avoiding/subverting any cool ones. Unless Evil Is Cool (Embryo is listed as such) needs cleanup.

I bring this up because Griffith from Berserk isn't listed as a Hate Sink, nor has he been up for consideration for such, despite his rape of one of the main characters. I believe this is because the established Hate Sinks have so many more rapes to them and are so one-dimensionally evil Griffith doesn't meet the high bar of the series standard for Hate Sink. Anything else Griffith has going against counting that Embryo lacks?

Thoughts on Mana users counting or not?

Embryo definitely counts, I just want to add "Any style and coolness he showed in his debut is loss as we learn the depths of his depravity and events turn against him." That's what it took to fix Scar's Hate Sink entry. May I add that?

Let's write up the Mana users society.

What's the work?
Cross Ange is an anime set in a False Utopia created by the Big Bad Embryo using the Norma, who's crap treatment causes them to rebel and fight to undo this society.

Who are the Mana User? What do they do?
They're normal people save for magical abilities that are extremely racist to the Norma due to their Anti-Magic disputing their society, believing them to be antisocial monsters and force then into a dangerous job where they're expected to die serving them. Ange's friends who should have known better turn on her when ousted as such, only one remaining neutral at best. Despite this they still expect Ange to save them in the ending.

Freudian Excuse or Mitigating Qualities?
Yes. They were manipulated, if not programed, to believing what what they do about the Norma by Embryo. They're utopian existence has also left the average mana user too complacent and soft-willed to stand against this social norm. Parental love has been shown to able to overcome this (Ange's parents did everything they could to protect her from this, even Taking the Bullet), the one exception it Hilda's mom's which was due to grief-induced insanity. Momoka rejected this racism, but her ability to fight off Embryo's mind control suggests she's the anomaly. All the mana users we see who learned the truth behind the Norma lacked or overcame their racism (Julio's continued racism was based on personal hatred to Ange). This suggests they could have overcome this if given the facts and opportunity. The ending implies those of them who are able to stand up for themself will have a chance at redemption.

Any Evil Is Cool traits?
No.

Verdict?
No. Normally yes, but Julio and Embryo set a high bar for heinousness (and imposed the heinousness of the mana users on them via manipulation) that the society as a whole (who serve as the baseline that a Hate Sink has to stand out from) don't measure up. They also have enough sympathetic or neutral individuals it's unfair to write off the whole of them as a Hate Sink.
