Yeah, I don't think most people are aware of that, certainly not enough to overshadow the massive franchise and how beloved it is.

[up][up][up] Certainly questionable parenting, but still not overshadowing. I’ve never heard about that before, while I’ve heard lots about Winnie the Pooh.

Found on the main page, under Film - Animation:

  • Abominable is remembered for a scene which had a map with the nine-dash-line on it which resulted in the movie being banned in countries in Southeast Asia; the protests in Hong Kong that were happening at the same time when the movie came out didn't help matters as well. Despite this, the film was still a success at least.

I had never heard of this controversy until I read it here. And I certainly don't think people are still talking about it (the entry even says the film was still a success.) An argument could be made for the film being banned in other countries, but can a controversy overshadow something in only one country?

[up] I'd say controversy can overshadow a film only in one region. Worth mentioning that it's one of the only things I know about the movie but that's because it seems to be a pretty standard kids' film anyway, and I only saw adults on my feed talking about the nine-dash line thing.

I do some cleanup and then I enjoy shows you probably think are cringe.

[up]I'd rewrite the first sentence as follows.

  • Any discussions of Warcraft III: Reforged (2020) inevitably become subsumed by its disastrous launch and questionable actions that further damaged Blizzard's already wounded reputation in the 2010s after its merger with Activision (note here).
The note is fine, but that first sentence is too long and we don't need that much detail. Also this part:
  • ..., though it's probable the community manager who wrote the response had executives monitoring him to make sure he didn't write anything that would discredit them, honesty be damned.
This is unnecessary Speculative Troping about the reasoning behind the statement, even if it's plausible.

There are probably other things too, but these are the first things I'd do in a rewrite

This example was originally commented out on The New Mutants, despite the fact that it has not yet been 6 months since the film's release on 28th of August 2020:

  • Overshadowed by Controversy: Overall, the film itself has so little going for it that pretty much any conversation about the film will be centred around the two massive controversies surrounding the film.
    • Firstly, the massive delay before it's release. As noted elsewhere on this page and the Trivia page, the film was repeatedly hit with delays before it's release; first to film reshoots that they then never filmed, then to accommodate the Disney-Fox merger, which resulted in the film being postponed until Disney could figure out a time to release it. When it finally got one, it got delayed again because of Covid-19. By the time it was finally released, it had spent years waiting.
    • Secondly, the racism. As noted below, the film received heavy criticism pre-release for whitewashing Sunspot (typically a Black Brazilian boy, played by light-skinned Brazilian actor Henry Zaga), with the reasoning given by the director not helping, followed by also casting light-skinned Blu Hunt to play Danielle Moonstar leading to accusations of colorism, and the erasure of Karma (Vietnamese and lesbian) from the film completely, despite her importance among the team. While this could all just be excused as obliviousness, the film then digs itself deeper upon release by having Illyana Rasputin be written as a racist bully who is never punished or called on her behavior, or is forced to redeem herself (rather, it's Dani who the narrative presents being the one who has to earn Illyana's respect), and instead her racist remarks are treated as lovably bitchy banter. All in all, it becomes too egregious to believe this was all an accident.

[up] The first one's probably legit, but I'm not so sure about the second one. Either way, the way it's currently written seems a bit inflammatory, and even if that really was a source of controversy, it should be rewritten.

As it is before the time limit, it is by definition not legit. Cut it.

I've reworked parts of the Warcraft III: Reforged entry. Any more sections that feel complain-y and bound to start edit wars?

  • Any discussions of Warcraft III: Reforged (2020) inevitably become subsumed by its disastrous launch and questionable actions that further damaged Blizzard's already wounded reputation in the 2010s after its merger with Activision note . Announced as an Updated Re-release to the much-loved Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos (2002), Blizzard promised to align it with World of Warcraft while remaining faithful to what made the original game great and co-existing alongside it in the Battle.net client. It was released to complete derision for being an Obvious Beta and completely failing to deliver on its promises. The graphics looked worse than they did in the trailer, several features were missing from the original game that fans liked, and it was riddled with Game-Breaking Bugs including disconnection problems. What solidified its infamy was that 1) the original game was removed from the Blizzard store while being automatically overwritten with the remaster in the client, even to those who already had the original, 2) the remaster's EULA grants Blizzard exclusive ownership over any and all user-created content, and 3) Blizzard's official response to the massive backlash was "We're sorry to those of you who didn't have the experience you wanted", which many fans saw as Blizzard blaming their own customers for having their expectations too high. Regardless, everything that was promised at announcement felt like Blatant Lies in retrospect, with the trainwreck cementing Blizzard's moral death in the eyes of many.

Found on Web Original, specifically the bolded part:

  • Go Animate/Vyond is probably best known for the infamous "Grounded" videos and founder Alvin Hung's apparent attempts to stop more of them from being made.

While the "grounded" videos are indeed quite infamous on the internet (there are several "cringe compilations" of them on YouTube), the latter is not a controversy I have ever heard of, nor have (I assume) most people when they have heard of Go Animate. Unless I'm wrong. The example is already a ZCE anyway, so what should be done?

[up] While GoAnimate/Vyond is infamous for “grounded” videos and the like, I don’t think that counts as a “controversy”. And Hunt’s attempts to stop those videos from being made is far from being notable enough to count, so that can definitely go.

Found this on Quentin Tarantino

  • Overshadowed by Controversy:
    • Prior to The Hateful Eight's opening, Tarantino discovered that Disney, who he had worked with on Pulp Fiction and the Kill Bill movies, had pre-booked the L.A. Cinerama Dome by ArcLight and had threatened to withhold Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens from that chain if they did not screen Star Wars in place of The Hateful 8, a practice called "Clearance", which they enforced when they discovered the theater had accidentally double-booked these movies note . Tarantino was livid and went off on Disney, even though the tickets for Star Wars actually went on sale in the summer for showings during Christmas, during which Tarantino thought they were going to play his movie; ArcLight never informed him of the double-booking fiasco until the last minute, but this hasn't stopped Tarantino from vowing never to work with Disney again, and one of the last times someone made a vow like this, it was in the wake of a contract breach regarding Aladdin and Robin Williams; this was one of the steps that led directly to studio chief Jeffrey Katzenberg's acrimonious departure from the studio, though not before he sealed the deal that led to Tarantino winding up with Disney in the first place, and that is why Dream Works, DreamWorks Animation, AND a 25-year clause against using extra Robin Williams voice clips note  for the film exist.
    • Quentin Tarantino as a whole suffered this in the wake of the revelations of Harvey Weinstein's predatory behavior and history of sexual violence, as he was the filmmaker most associated with him, not helped by the fact he admitted he knew enough to say something about Weinstein. He suffered even further blows to his image when Uma Thurman's account of her injuries and the resurfaced Howard Stern interview came about, causing an unprecedented level of backlash to Tarantino.

I'm pretty Tarantino is known more for his very good movies, particularly Pulp Fiction, than these controversies. I didn't even hear that first one before I clicked on his YMMV page. I also don't think YMMV is allowed for Creator Pages either.

[up] I've heard of the MeToo one, but I don't think it overshadowed Tarantino per se. And not only have I not heard of the first, the first doesn't even seem to know what controversy it's talking about (what does Robin Williams have to do with Tarantino?) Both can be cut IMO.

Another List of Transgressions on Real Life:

  • Xi Jinping, China's current paramount leader, is a very contentious figure for many reasons. These reasons include him detaining Uyghurs in re-education camps in Xinjiang in response to a series of terrorist incidents, waging a severe and systematic persecution of both Christians and Muslims (up to and including referring to Islam as an "ideological illness"), abolishing term limits for the president and vice president, instituting the infamous Social Credit System, note  pursuing an increasingly aggressive foreign policy (especially when it comes to Southeast Asia, including the unilateral claiming international waters by constructing artificial islands), unveiling the Belt and Road initiative (which has been widely accused of being neocolonialist), significantly stepping up censorship in China (most notoriously blocking Winnie the Pooh on Chinese social media following the spread of Internet memes comparing Xi to the title character)note  and for presiding over China's militaristic response to the 2019 Hong Kong protests. Despite these, Xi remains popular among certain sections of the mainland Chinese populace for his political campaigns against supposedly corrupt officials and businessmen.

While Xi is obviously controversial and not well known as a good person, is there really a singular controversy that overshadows him? Maybe the Pooh stuff, but I don't really know. Rewrite or cut?

I think it's more the modern republic of China in general that would be OBC, not Xi Jinping as a person. The Pooh stuff is the only thing I'd tie to him specifically, but I don't know if that's really controversy that overshadows....worse controversies.

[down] Not necessarily saying it's valid for China either. Just that it's not really the person who gets associated with these controversies, but the vague idea of "China" or "Chinese government."

[up] But can a country be Overshadowed by Controversy? China as a whole isn't completely overshadowed by Xi and the Hong Kong/Uyghur/Tibet/assorted other controversies, people can name things about China that are positive (I hope.) Is it really valid?

For something to be OBC, the controversy must be the first thing (an arbitrary percentage of) people would think of when they think of the person/group/work/etc. A country could theoretically be OBC, it's just that it would take an incredibly high threshold to reach so none qualify. (Additionally, ROCEJ concerns come into play when we're talking about a government currently or recently in power.)
