Cleanup thread: Magnificent Bastard

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

     Previous post
IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

  • Why do a cleanup?: This trope definitely exists and has a well documented history of use. That being said, it frequently gets misused to a character who meets one of the components, namely that they are smart, charming while not necessarily even being a villain, or create good plans. While these are components, there is also a certain personality required, not to mention that all of the above are required to be present for a character to be a true Magnificent Bastard. As the trope attracts interest, it unfortunately brings in a lot of misuse and I thought the best way to rectify this would be a Perpetual Cleanup Thread, as is being done and has seen success with Complete Monster.

  • What makes a Magnificent Bastard: Below is a list of the individual components to make this character. Note that they must all be present, not just some, which has lead to frequent misuse:
    • Must be intelligent: Goes without saying, to be a Magnificent Bastard, the character has to be smart in the first place and use their brain to work towards whatever their end goal may be;
    • Must be a Bastard: While going overboard in how vile the character is can be detrimental, a key aspect is the Bastard part of the trope, whether the character is an out-and-out antagonist in the work, some manner of Villain Protagonist, or something in between, they at least have some unscrupulous qualities to qualify for this trope;
    • Must not be too detestable: Again, there is a ceiling on how bad the character can be before they just become too nefarious, blocking out the Magnificent part of the trope. A genocidal racist or child-raping Sadist aren't going to make the cut;
    • Think on their feet: In addition to being a Chessmaster, a Magnificent Bastard, if the character deals with situations in which their initial plan is ruined, has to be able to pull a Xanatos Speed Chess and at least come up with a competent strategy to make up for lost time, otherwise they fail for being unable to think in tough spots;
    • Have charm: Even if they don't necessarily make every character they meet fall in love with them and can even be detested by others, the audience has to find an amicable social relation to the character, or they are failing to make the impact required for this trope.

  • What to do if a character is listed on a page but has not been approved?: They need to be removed, all candidates need to come through the cleanup thread first. The character could well count but they need to be analyzed properly and voted on first.

  • Do we list Playing With this trope?: No; as a YMMV trope, this cannot be Played With, so we only want examples that are Played Straight.

  • What do I do if I want a character to be listed as a Magnificent Bastard?: The greatest success Complete Monster saw for its cleanup effort was from the invention of the effort post format, so, borrowing from that, a troper wishing to propose a Magnificent Bastard will create such a post in the following format:
    • Begin by describing The work, this will help establish the setting the character is in and for the reader to understand what kind of a scenario they are in;
    • Summarize The character's actions, this will provide a listing for readers to understand what they do and how it applies to this trope because charm and lack of smugness are so crucial, this is a good time to be incorporating exactly the flavor of how they operate to explain this;
    • List circumstances in which the character must Think on their feet, these are times where a wrench might be thrown in their initial plan and they have to adapt on the spot or even come up with a new scheme all together, this is also a good time to explain how the villain reacts to defeat when they have to face it, a true Magnificent Bastard won't break down into tears at the thought of death, they should have known such a possibility could occur and be able to handle it with more dignity;
    • The competition, similar to the Heinous Standard dealt with for a Complete Monster, this section is to deal with how successful the character is in carrying out their plans compared to other characters. While, as a villain, they probably are going to lose in the end, it is good to explain how other characters handle the same situation. There is no exceptionalism case to be made for this trope but explaining the variety helps the reader have a better understanding of the proposal.

  • How do you know when the character's arc is done so they can be proposed? When their tenure as a villain or antagonist finishes. This could happen in a single Story Arc in an entire work, a single work of a franchise, or the whole series in general. We'll show lenience to Long-Runners with constantly recurring candidates or series with outstanding continuities (ex. comic books), and it's entirely possible to count in a work or two but not in general for a reason like Depending on the Writer.

  • What about candidates evil because of external sources? Those Made of Evil can qualify if they show enough individuality and tactical acumen — in other words, they have the personality to fulfill the magnificence requirement. Conversely, those brainwashed, especially if they're a better person without it, may fail the individuality aspect and cannot count.

  • What if they are under orders from a higher-up? Depends. If the boss created the plans down to the letter and the candidate is just following them, sounds like we should discuss the boss instead. However, if the candidate takes creative liberties with the orders, adds their own charm and flair to them, fills in holes in the orders, and/or actively deals with obstacles their boss did not talk about, the candidate shows enough individual thinking to qualify.

  • What about Character Development? An MB is something a character can develop into... a nice person who plots well might become more morally gray as the work goes on and hits the "Bastard" criteria, thus making them viable. Likewise, a Smug Snake might shed their ego, become more understanding of the threat others pose and gain the personality or "Magnificent" criteria, likewise making them viable. Conversely, a character who looks like this trope might suffer from a Sanity Slippage or just get outed as not being as smart as they thought they were and become incompatible with MB.

  • Can an MB be a good guy? Not in the conventional sense... it is required they have at least some dubious traits lest they fail the "Bastard" criteria. That being said, a character who pulls a Heel–Face Turn or eventually stops taking villainous actions is still fair game: as there was a point in time where they were both "Magnificent" and a "Bastard" at the same time and they've merely adapted as time goes on. Now... if such a character begins showing other issues (i.e.: becomes prone to freak outs or starts getting outwitted) then they're compromising their Magnificence and will probably be deemed a cut. What's important is stylishly operating while at least for some time being willing to take at best underhanded methods to see a job done. A Heel–Face Turn in itself isn't a disqualifier but they do have to have been "Magnificent" and a "Bastard" at the same time and afterwards can't start slipping on the former front.

  • What about characters whose stories can take different routes?: When proposing a character in a form of media that has them in multiple story routes. Said character must be consistent with their characteristics in all routes. (ex.: Can't have an example who shows promise on one route yet fails in another.) The only exception is if a later installment of the series confirms the character's actions which made them worth proposing are the canon route.

  • Is there a timeframe rule like with Complete Monster?: Yes, please wait two weeks until after the work has concluded before proposing a character (again, usually using the North American air date). As is the case with CM, we want to give a reasonable time frame so that everyone interested in seeing the work has done so and can participate in the discussion without having anything spoiled.

  • What about groups like with Complete Monster?: This is a point of divergence between the two tropes. While CM does not allow for a single entry encompassing more than three characters lest their heinousness for crimes becomes too watered down, with MB as long as they are treated as one "unit" it is acceptable to lump all characters provided they share acts of charm and intelligence.

  • Can I propose my own work's character as a Magnificent Bastard?: No, this is a YMMV subject and the creator of a content is way too biased to be able to evaluate the criteria we're looking for without a second opinion taking over. That being said, you are more than welcome to encourage someone to consume your creation and if they feel a character counts, are more than welcome to suggest them.

Thread rules

When voting a troper must specify the effort post they're voting on and cannot merely vote on "Everything I missed" as in the past it has indicated the poster didn't read the effort post and is guessing instead of analyzing.

Resolved items

In general, a character listed on this trope is considered "settled". This means they should not be challenged unless information used to list them was incorrect or information was missed in the initial discussion.

However, when re-litigating a candidate, the same rules apply for when they were originally proposed. If they do not have five or more upvotes than downvotes for approval upon a re-litigation, including votes from the initial discussion if they do not change, then they are a cut.

This especially applies to the characters listed below, who have been discussed excessively and repeated attempts to get them listed/cut may result in punitive action for bogging down the thread.

Definitely an MB

Definitely not an MB

  • South Park: The show's frequent use of vulgar comedy and mean-spirited humor leaves any potential candidates devoid of the dignity or charm to qualify.

Sorry, Future. Great Ep, but just trying to (or successfully) killing bad guys isn't taking you from hero territory into bastard territory. Gotta downvote, but appreciate the effort!

@43 I thought that the attacks on the muggers and on Axis Chemicals might be enough because he was stalking the former and outright murdered the latter, but I understand that it was all in the context of him having to take the extremes and not hitting it because in the context of Batman, it's normal heroics.

The Work

Alex Rider, a series of novels about the titular teenage spy

The Candidate

Yassen Gregorovich. He appears in two of the books and has his own spinoff novel. His actions have been summarized below.

Stormbreaker

He was hired by Herod Sayle to transport smallpox virus to Cornwall and murder Ian Rider, who was investigating him. He succeeds in the latter (in the movie - shoots him while dangling upside-down in a helicopter) and is the catalyst for Alex Rider becoming the spy we all know.

While transporting the viruses, he shoots a worker for denting one of the containers. He also kills Herod Sayle after his operation fails. He lets Alex go, saying that he does does not harm children, and tells Alex that they don't belong to the same world after he vows revenge.

Eagle Strike

Alex Rider runs into Yassen while on holiday with his friend and her family. However, their holiday home explodes in a supposed gas leak, injuring the friends father in the process. Alex suspects that Yassen is involved, sneaks onto his yacht, and nearly shoots him. However, Yassen outthinks him and enters him in a bullfight. Alex escapes and calls a number on Yassen's mobile phone, but hears the voice of Damian Cray, a famous singer and the books main villain.

Anyways, the case ensues, and by the end of the novel, Alex's friend has been kidnapped and Alex goes to where Cray is to get her back. Cray reveals his plan, and after he activates the missiles, he orders Yassen to shoot both of them. Yassen refuses, insisting that he will not harm children. Yassen is shot by Cray, but survives long enough to outlive Cray, after which he tells Alex to "Find Scorpia", and that he knew his father.

Russian Roulette

This novel reveals Yassen's backstory - He was named "Yasha" and was born in a small Russian village. Yassen's parents worked at a nearby factory which apparently produced fertilisers (but in fact also secretly developed chemical weapons for the Russian government).

Yassen was forced to flee his home after an accident at the factory, which contaminated the whole village with a deadly strain of anthrax. Yassens parents had immediately fled the facility to save their son with an antidote. They advise their son to go to Moscow and seek out a certain Misha Dementyev, a friend of Yassen's father.

The Russian authorities send gunships to destroy the village to contain the outbreak and cover up the incident. Yassen escapes with his best friend Leo, and they are pursued by soldiers who were ordered to hunt down all survivors of the disaster. They escape through a narrow sewage pipe and find shelter in an old construction hut. Leo falls sick and dies, so Yassen continues on alone. He tries to sneak on a train but is caught by the police. He tricks them into thinking he died of anthrax and escapes onto a train for Moscow.

While in Moscow, Yassen meets Dementyev in an old college. Unfortunately, Dementyev calls the cops because Yassen is a loose end in the anthrax incident. Yassen evades arrest and joins a gang of petty thieves who had pickpocketed him earlier. A few days, Yassen convinces the group to rob a flat owned by a wealthy businessman named Vladimir Sharkovsky, as he overheard Dementyev converse with on the phone. Yassen is chosen to crawl into the house to let the other members in.

However, Sharkovsky unexpectedly returns to the flat and captures Yassen, forcing him to play a game of Russian Roulette with a single bullet. Yassen survives this, and after two unsuccessful attempts to escape, he spends the next four years working at Sharkovsky's estate. One night, he learns that Sharkovsky was responsible for the deaths of his parents and the destruction of his village, having cut corners to increase profit. Yassen then endeavors to kill him.

Yassen's imprisonment ends when a Scorpia assassin named Grant infiltrates the compound and shoots Sharkovsky, apparently killing him. Upon Yassen's persuasion, Grant lets him join him and takes him to The Widow's Palace to meet Julia Rothman. However, it turns out that Sharkovsky survived the assassination attempt, and Rothman executes him for his failure. Rothman offers to let Yassen join Scorpia, and Yassen agrees because his only other option being to return to Russia, where Sharkovsky will be looking for him.

Yassen spends the next four months at Scorpia's training facility before being given his first contract. However, Yassen is unable to take the target's life, and while disappointed with him, Scorpia decide to give Yassen a second chance and pairs him up with John Rider.

During their time together, John expresses doubt that Yassen wants to be a killer, and Yassen admits the same. John encourages him to leave, so Yassen plans to board a plane to Berlin and disappear. However, Yassen discovers a gadget from MI 6 in John's luggage, and realises that John is an MI 6 double agent working against Scorpia.

Feeling betrayed, Yassen abandons his original plans and returns to Sharkovsky's estate, using skills he learned from Scorpia to infiltrate it and confront Sharkovsky. Yassen plays anti-Russian Roulette in front of Sharkovsky, survives, and kills Sharkovsky and his son.

The final chapter is the epilogue of Stormbreaker from Yassen's perspective - Yassen became a professional killer largely to prove John's beliefs about him wrong. He killed Herod Sayle to talk with Alex, and spared Alex because he feels that he owes John his life. He told Alex not to become a spy so that he has a chance at a normal life.

Magnificence and Bastardry

Even before becoming an assassin, Yassen was a resourceful youth. He was able to evade the soldiers who destroyed his home and the cops who were called on him. His failures were due to factors out of his control. After becoming an assassin, he proves to be highly ruthless, but is also insistent that he would not harm children.

He is initially hesitant to kill his targets because of his unwillingness to be an assassin, but after John Ryder's departure, he seems more willing to get his hands dirty, working with people like Sayle and Rothman.

ENDNOTE: I was wondering if Blunt and/or Jones might be good for this trope since they have no problem with arm-twisting Alex into participating in their investigation, but they get played by the villain in Scorpia Rising. Also, Blunt is too much of a jerk IMO.

What is the work?

The Total Shuffled Island Series is a series of fanfics that act as an Alternate Universe to the Total Drama series.

It as it's name implies shuffles the contestants from canon around to different introductory seasons to create whole new stories.

Who is Noah? What has he done?

Noah is a contestant introduced in the fourth season, Revenge of the Island. He is the youngest of nine brothers. He plans to use the prize money to attend a good college.

Serving as the main antagonist of his debut season Noah tries to find the immunity idol early on before anyone else can get to it.

In the fourth chapter Noah sends Leonard a mysterious note, playing on his ego by calling him "Leonard the Mighty" telling him that he fears that he would be the next contestant eliminated and to form an alliance with him. Leonard becomes increasingly cocky and delusional until finally admitting that he's not a real wizard just in time for him to be eliminated for losing the challenge for his team.

In the next chapter Noah sends another anonymous note, this time to Justin telling him that Lindsay is smarter than she looks and that she's not so loyal to him and is planning to betray him, this causes Justin to butt heads with Lindsay throughout the challenge and cause their team to lose...the team eliminates Justin as a result.

A couple of chapters later, Noah and Courtney form an alliance and the two vote off Cameron after he fails his challenge.

In the next chapter Noah and Courtney discuss about how Gwen and Trent's relationship could be a potential threat to their alliance and plan to eliminate one of them. After both the Toxic Rats and Mutant Maggots lose the challenge and both teams get to eliminate a contestant from the other team in a double elimination. The Maggots vote Noah off but Noah reveals that he found the immunity idol and uses it to save himself, causing Gwen who had the second most votes to be eliminated instead.

Upon making it to the merge Noah ends his alliance with Courtney after the two get at each other's throat. Courtney wins the challenge and gets to pick who to eliminate, Courtney writes out a chart of all the contestants that are left being undecided on whether to eliminate Noah or Zoey. Noah finds Courtney's chart in the confessional so Noah forges a diary and puts it on Courtney's bed framing Zoey as a two faced hypocrite planning to betray all of her friends which causes Courtney to eliminate her.

In the final four Nosh allies with Courtney once again helping her in the chapter's challenge until eventually abandoning her which causes Courtney to vote against Nosh during the elimination ceremony but due to Harold's dislike for her as well as seeing her as a bigger threat than Noah Harold votes against Courtney causing Courtney to be eliminated in a 2-1-1 vote.

Noah wins the final three challenge and chooses to eliminate Jasmine due to Harold being a weaker opponent.

The finale challenge is revealed to be a showdown where whoever can pin the other one down for three seconds wins. Knowing Harold has a slight advantage over him physically while Harold arms himself with a samurai sword and armor Noah builds a variety of traps and weapons that he uses strategically to wear him down. In his ending (which is canon) Noah knocks down Harold and wins the money.

Returning in All Stars Noah is put on the Villainous Vultures. While he doesn't do much in the first few chapters, in Food Fright Scott reveals that he "found" the immunity idol. However Noah having been the only contestant to have had an immunity idol realizes that Scott's is a fake. Noah allies himself with Jasmine Alejandro steals Scott's immunity idol but Noah doesn't tell him that it is a fake abd Alejandro gets voted off after the villains lose.

In the next couple of chapters, Nosh feeling like he's not getting the respect that he deserves beats a moose in a boxing challenge. The Heroes being the winners of the challenge choose to eliminate Noah due to viewing him as the biggest threat due winning the previous season as well as his surprising strength in the boxing challenge.

Is he charming/magnificent?

Yes. He is way more cunning and devious than he was in canon receiving Adaptional Villainy while still being a fairly decent guy underneath it all but anyway he is the most successful season antagonist actually winning his debut season through sheer manipulation and smarts.

Using anonymous notes to sabotage the competition, outwitting Courtney (one of the smartest and most manipulative contestants in the series) more than once, making up for his lack of physical strength with tactical smarts such as the traps he layed for Harold in the Revenge finale, etc.

He doesn't do much in All Stars but is still presented as a credible threat, in fact too credible that he was voted off because of it.

Is he a bastard? Too much?

He is the least evil antagonist and his actions aren't as bad as the others but he lied to, sabotaged and betrayed multiple contestants to further his own placement in the game. But yeah he's presented as being quite sympathetic with s truly understandable motive of wanting to use the money to get into a descent college and at the end of his villain season he apologizes for the dirty way he played.

Any breakdowns?

He has a small breakdown in the Revenge finale but while he is quite frustrated it is moreso him reaffirming his resolve to win than a truly pathetic tantrum.

As for All Stars he takes his elimination relatively fine responding in the same dry sarcasm he is known for.

Competiton?

So far I would say him and maybe Scott may count (I will have to look at Scott a little more). And perhaps a bigger maybe on Alejandro since he gets outwitted a few times throughout the series of fanfics and the season where he was the main antagonist has him getting a rather pathetic takedown in his elimination episode.

She did try to chase Muraki and her men with Sasuke, but had to slow down as soon as the latter showed symptoms of the illness (which happened pretty much immediately, especially since it was the second dose of the drug Sasuke got).

I've found what may be a female Super Sentai MB.

What is the work?

Taiyou Sentai Sun Vulcan, the fifth Super Sentai series. It functions as a sequel of sorts to Denshi Sentai Denziman, and by that I mean the Big Bad from Denziman returns here as an employee of the new Big Bad, and it has one or two episodes that reference events from Denziman.

The plot is pretty straightforward. A new terrorist organisation known as "Machine Empire Black Magma" surfaces to begin carrying out attacks across the world (but mostly in Japan). As such, it's up to a (this time) three man Sentai team to defeat Black Magma's Monger monsters and protect world peace.

Who is Amazon Killer? What does she do?

Amazon Killer, a member of the Vader Clan (the villains from Denziman) who just so happened to be in space at the same time the events of the series were occurring. She eventually comes to Earth to serve under Queen Hedrian, and since she's Demoted to Dragon under the current Big Bad Fuhrer Hell Saturn, this means working for him as well.

Her introduction comes midway through the series and sees her steamrolling a horde of Black Magma Mooks and the Zero Girls, Hell Saturn's all-female team of elite spies/bodyguards. This impresses Hell Saturn enough for him to give her the task of locating and destroying Sun Vulcan's secret base. Amazon Killer thus formulates a plan to place a Monger of the Week in a fake asteroid and disguise it as an alien lifeform that came to Earth so Sun Vulcan will bring it back to their base. Once they do, the Monger emerges and emits a signal that alerts Black Magma to the base's location, allowing them to perform a bombing run to destroy it. (Although Sun Vulcan get a new base almost immediately after).

Amazon Killer would loyally serve Queen Hedrian throughout the series, tilting the balance of power in Black Magma more in her favor.

Eventually, a Wild Card would come in the form of Inazuma Ginga, Amazon Killer's former partner from while she was operating as an independent agent in space. Inazuma Ginga's arrival soon draws the interest of Hell Saturn, leading him to send his minions to try and recruit him. While not caring much for Black Magma's goals, Inazuma Ginga agrees so he can get the chance to fight Sun Vulcan. When Hell Saturn appoints Inazuma his new right-hand man, Amazon Killer and Queen Hedrian begin secretly plotting to remove them both. Hedrian is able to turn them against each other and manipulate them into a duel, which ends with Inazuma slaying Hell Saturn and Black Magma being in need of a new leader. Amazon Killer immediately nominates Inazuma Ginga, getting the Zero Girls (who don't want to see Hell Saturn's killer succeed him) to put themselves behind Queen Hedrian instead, giving her boss all the support she needs to become the next ruler.

Unfortunately for them both, Queen Hedrian's tenure doesn't last very long, as it turns out Hell Saturn has an even higher power behind him, the Omnipotent God, who isn't too happy about his figurehead being ousted. The Omnipotent God revives Hell Saturn to act as its messenger and curses Queen Hedrian's mechanical heart to rust. After Hedrian dies and Inazuma Ginga is disposed of by Hell Saturn's vengeful ghost, Amazon Killer becomes the next ruler of Black Magma, though it soon becomes apparent she's just a Puppet Queen for the Omnipotent God.

Amazon Killer is naturally none too happy about this. She first attempts to track down and kill the Omnipotent God, who turns out to be a telepathic Brain in a Jar, but is stopped by Hell Saturn's ghost and made to fight Sun Vulcan. Upon being defeated however, Amazon Killer reveals the Omnipotent God's location before committing suicide, using her final moments to give Sun Vulcan everything they need to track down and destroy it.

Is she magnificent?

She's tough, cunning and able to handle all three members of Sun Vulcan in a fight. While Hedrian is the main planner between both of them, Amazon Killer can also come up with plans on the field and improvise when needed. A good chunk of why Queen Hedrian succeeds in later episodes is because she has Amazon Killer at her side.

She does get kowtowed into being the Omnipotent God's puppet for a bit, but considering it's a brain with near-limitless telepathic powers, and she's just a really strong Dark Action Girl there wasn't really much she could do against it. And she eventually does screw it over and choose to die rather than live serving it. So in the end, Amazon Killer got the last laugh.

Is she a bitch?

She partakes in your standard Toku villainy, i.e. terrorizing civilians and trying to kill the heroes. She mostly acts out of loyalty to Queen Hedrian and never does anything that's too exceptionally cruel. In most episodes her role is just to hassle the heroes while they're fighting the Monger of the Week.

Final Verdict

[tup] (Also, if Amazon Killer were to be approved Sentai would have 7 MBs, which I believe is enough for it to have its own separate page)

Just imagine something here.

Would General W.R Monger from Monsters vs. Aliens be worth discussing as an MB Candidate? I feel that his main issue is a lack of bastardly qualities. While he is holding the monsters as prisoners, they were causing havoc and panic when they were outside and he takes good care of them. He also promises to let them go after the space-bot is defeated, and keeps true to his promise. He's also pretty aggressive to a guy to objects to his plan.

[tup]amazon killer

Also I think Yassen's Stormbreaker probably counts too . Though unlike Sayle for cm there I'm not sure he does enough different for a entry. I'll check.

Speaking of which Yassen's TV Series counterpart will probably count but his arc is currently ongoing.

Huh really. I thought they already adapted Damien Cray's stuff for season 2 (the book where he died).
