All-Purpose Policy and Meta discussion: Administrivia.Trope Repair Shop

Go To

This thread is a metathread for Trope Repair Shop discussion. Things like TRS policy, what is needed in a TRS opening post, questions about whether a certain topic is TRS-worthy and questions about why a thread wasn't opened go here.

Some guidelines for when/whether to use TRS:

  • If the trope is fine, but has some bad examples, feel free to clean them up or to start a cleanup project at Projects: Short-Term. Trope Repair Shop is for when cleaning isn't sufficient.
  • If you think there's something wrong with the trope that systematically attracts improper examples, start a discussion at Trope Talk. Use a Wick Check to see whether there's an issue present (and if there is, what the issue is), and post the results on TRS Queue and wait your turn if a problem is present. The following methods are two possible ways to do a wick check (though not necessarily the only ways):
    • You can go ahead with the Wick Check without a discussion if you know what you're looking for. While it's not mandatory, feel free to ask someone for help confirming that you got the issue and the numbers correct.
    • Consult the Wick Check Project thread to collect evidence if you need help.
  • If a wick check is too much for you, you can leave the issue at Tropes Needing TRS citing the discussion.
  • Depending on a trope (or non-trope) in question, a wick check may be determined to not be required, such as for tropes that are not thriving (per the standards for trope health listed on the Wick page). However, there is no problem if you want to do one anyway.

A (not mandatory, informal) queue for prospective TRS participants can be found at the TRS Queue.

Found Over the Shoulder from Random Trope, and it just has 0 examples. I assume because it’s too common to list examples, but it’s not in any of the Example Sectionectomy indexes, implying it’s supposed to be a regular trope.

Same for Superheroes Wear Tights, which I also found through Random Trope.

[up] They're both really old pages, being created in 2008 and 2011, respectively. It's not uncommon for them to not have on-page examples for no reason.

[up][up]if you look at both's related pages, they both are in the standing range by our standards, with Superheroes Wear Tights having 100+ wicks. There was also a previous Not Thriving TRS thread for SWT before that I found via the discussion tab [1]. From that, the person who launched the trope made it No On Page Examples right out the gate, which you can see on the draft [2].

Over the Shoulder is a Camera Tricks trope and those notoriously have few wicks because they are so common and near omnipresent that people often just don't write examples of them because they barely notice it.

I don't think anything needs to be fixed, but it would be good to put them on the proper indices for No On Page Examples.

I have a question.

I found Mr Starship today and it appears it flat out wasn't crosswicked, with just 5 off-page wicks. But if I were to do crosswicking, there are 15 on-page examples, which, if combined, make just 20 wicks, which according to Wick would still count as Starvation range. This is on top of the horrible and non-indicative name.

Should I still try to crosswick the examples, or can I just bring it in as Not Thriving anyway?

[up]I'd also add that Setting as a Character and this adoptable draft for Lady Vessel are likely relevant to the discussion on what to do with that trope

A bit late on this one since I slept through the conversation, but Fernando is correct in saying that if the page is still starving even after crosswicking, there's a case for bringing it to TRS, so adding it to the Queue is fine.

Patiently awaiting the release of Paper Luigi and the Marvelous Compass.

And just like that, I found another trope with possible problems.

Almost all on-page examples on Exposed Eyeballs as Eyes are just "character has these" without explaining how it is tropeworthy. Am I misinterpreting something, or should I just do a wick check?

Just did a wick check for Doppelgänger Replacement Love Interest, and I need some input on how to proceed from here.

Basically the trope is defined when a person who can't get together with their original love interest (due to death, break-up, unrequited love, etc.) but eventually ends up with another love interest that's exactly like the previous one through magical/supernatural means. i.e. this trope is limited to "impossible causes" such as time travel, cloning, parallel universes, etc., and that "mundane" examples (e.g. the new love interest being an identical twin/sibling/cousin of the old one, or just an Identical Stranger) don't count.

Now (I think) there's enough misuse of the latter (24%) to justify an expansion of the trope, but I'm a bit concerned about the description that instructs moving the "mundane" examples to Replacement Goldfish because AFAIK Replacement Goldfish is when the character actively seeks out a replacement for their deceased loved one rather than simply getting together with a similar love interest by chance, and I wonder if I'd have to wick check Replacement Goldfish to propose expanding the other trope.

Did the Exposed Eyeballs as Eyes wick check anyway. Majority of the use was just "character has exposed eyeball eyes". Will queue up as "Not Tropeworthy" since the description doesn't really mention much tropeworthy.

[up][up]Yeah, I think your read on Replacement Goldfish is correct, meaning that mundane examples of "a character who can't get with the one they want ends up with someone suspiciously similar or just like them in some way" shouldn't go there. To be honest, that to me reads like a character Has a Type; something like a non-parent focused version of Like Parent, Like Spouse. I feel like you have the option of either expanding the trope to include mundane examples or moving those over to Has a Type, but that's just my 2 cents

I guess there is room for a third in between case where they subconsciously treat someone as a replacement but don’t realize it until it’s pointed out?

Some of that love interest-related Replacement Goldfish stuff might be left over from the thread that merged Replacement Love Interest with it, and in hindsight, I think that thread was a mistake. Since it didn't have a wick check and later Duplicate Trope threads by the same poster ended up being more clearly dubious, maybe restoring Replacement Love Interest could be an alternative to expanding Replacement Goldfish since Replacement Love Interest was cut based on what, in hindsight, was probably faulty reasoning.

I recall reading the TRS that decided that, and I'm not sure whether I participated there, but I remember thinking that they weren't actually that similar.

Don't know if there's a precedent to restoring cut tropes although the proposal to expand Doppelgänger Replacement Love Interest (not Replacement Goldfish) would probably achieve the same purpose as restoring Replacement Love Interest.

As Selkies brought up a couple days ago, if I'm to suggest a trope be merged into another one and the description then broadened, would I need to do wick checks for both tropes?

[up][up][up]I suppose we could remove the "Doppelganger" from the name and retool it into a new version of Replacement Love Interest as an alternative to restoring the now-cut original version of Replacement Love Interest.

So I'm thinking of honestly repairing the Gothic Punk as a trope. I did a wick check of it here.

What do you think? Because the definition of Gothic Punk is "Gothic Horror setting where the "establishment" is monsters at the top of the roost and Humans Are Not the Dominant Species", and there's a massive amount of examples that simply don't fit.

[up] You need to check 50 wicks, not 30, per How to Do a Wick Check.

Once you've done that, just add yourself to the TRS Queue with your trope/thread. Without reading the description, there does seem to be a misuse problem.
