All-Purpose Policy and Meta discussion: Administrivia.Trope Repair Shop

Go To

This thread is a metathread for Trope Repair Shop discussion. Things like TRS policy, what is needed in a TRS opening post, questions about whether a certain topic is TRS-worthy and questions about why a thread wasn't opened go here.

Some guidelines for when/whether to use TRS:

  • If the trope is fine, but has some bad examples, feel free to clean them up or to start a cleanup project at Projects: Short-Term. Trope Repair Shop is for when cleaning isn't sufficient.
  • If you think there's something wrong with the trope that systematically attracts improper examples, start a discussion at Trope Talk. Use a Wick Check to see whether there's an issue present (and if there is, what the issue is), and post the results on TRS Queue and wait your turn if a problem is present. The following methods are two possible ways to do a wick check (though not necessarily the only ways):
    • You can go ahead with the Wick Check without a discussion if you know what you're looking for. While it's not mandatory, feel free to ask someone for help confirming that you got the issue and the numbers correct.
    • Consult the Wick Check Project thread to collect evidence if you need help.
  • If a wick check is too much for you, you can leave the issue at Tropes Needing TRS citing the discussion.
  • Depending on a trope (or non-trope) in question, a wick check may be determined to not be required, such as for tropes that are not thriving (per the standards for trope health listed on the Wick page). However, there is no problem if you want to do one anyway.

For a more detailed introduction to this forum, click here.

For related projects, see Wick Cleaning Projects and the Wick Check Project.

See Tropes Needing TRS for a list of trope candidates for TRS.

A (not mandatory, informal) queue for prospective TRS participants can be found at the TRS Queue.

I was looking at the From Clones to Genre thread in the Queue and now I'm wondering if it should be YMMV and not Trivia. We already determined that Genre Turning Point was YMMV, and the "Killer" tropes were brought up as YMMV candidates in that thread, so wouldn't the same apply to From Clones to Genre? How would we objectively measure when something stopped being a "clone" and started being a "genre"? Feels more like an Audience Reaction to me.

[up]That's a good point. It does sounds like something that would be difficult to objectively measure.

I'll wait and see if a wick check shows whether examples are written subjectively before discussing what to do, though.

I've brought it up here. Did I not ask about the wick check? I guess not. How long until it, I think I can do that. Don't really care if it turns out to be subjective.

This will say something about Genre Popularizer, Genre-Busting, Genre Relaunch, Genre-Killer, but not any time soon.

Also, this seems to be related to Follow the Leader, which is Trivia and not YMMV.

I'd like to apologize for all this.

~Piterpicher is up next now that Going to Be One of Those Days was taken care of not long after Groundhog Day began in the Midwest. Hopefully I only have to do this once, especially with the sinus infection I mentioned in the Troper Updates thread yesterday.

I feel like every time I try to do a wick check, I end up finding like...4 other tropes that need TRS...

Before, I go down this rabbit hole (it's a fairly short one given this page has only 28 wicks), can anyone tell me if I'm missing something with Skate Heaven Is a Place on Earth? Like is it a poorly categorized Useful Note or JFF page?

So according to the Administrivia.Tropes Needing TRS, Keigo, Kansai Regional Accent and Tohoku Regional Accent are all under the “Really a Useful Note” and after looking through some of the examples in the few years I’ve skimmed the sight, I do think it fits more as a UN. Do I need to do a wick or something before bringing to TRS?

Edit: Forgot to add Keigo as well.

[up]I think you would, because you'd be looking to see whether examples have meaning beyond "this character speaks this way". If the wicks show that it's merely about characters' ways of speaking and not characterization, then it would definitely point toward them being Useful Notes material, but if you find wicks that involve stereotypes (though we already have The Idiot from Osaka for the Kansai accent), those could probably be split off.

Kansai Regional Accent has 809 wicks and a Trope pagetype, so you should check what these wicks are about. Examples could probably be moved to The Idiot from Osaka or some actual accent trope if it's threaded.

Also, Keigo is the same as Kansai Regional Accent and Tohoku Regional Accent. Note that these are at UsefulNotes.Japanese Language.

Maybe they could be redirected to UsefulNotes.Japanese Language instead of made their own pages if that page already lists them.

Pretty soon, I want to make a thread on how Dueling Dubs has been misused. It gets confused with Same Language Dub all the time, and almost all of the English examples on Dueling Dubs for Western Animation are about how one cartoon has an American dub and a British dub, which would fall under Same Language Dub.

The differences:

  • Same Language Dub: The Alice and Bob Show is an American show, but it has a British English dub aired in the UK.
  • Dueling Dubs: The Alice and Bob Show has two Latin American Spanish dubs. The first one was made by Los Troperos Hermanos in 2003, but because of XYZ reason, Trope Doblaje redubbed it in 2014.

Basically, alternate dubs vs. redubs.

We are the best friends, we stand as one. Whatever life may bring, we are never alone.

[up][up][up]I was also getting at the fact that a wick check for Keigo would be looking for the same things as wick checks for Kansai Regional Accent and Tohoku Regional Accent, in that you'd be checking to see whether the examples have any meaning beyond characters speaking that way. If the wicks only cover accents and speech patterns, that would point toward them being Useful Notes material and Not a Trope.

I added those three to Tropes Needing TRS quite a while back because the accent pages for other languages are already classified as Useful Notes and not tropes, such as American Accents, Spanish Accents And Dialects, and German Dialects.

Edit: Accidentally typed "behind" when I meant "beyond". Whoops.
