Removing complaining, bashing and other negativity from the wiki

Go To

Inspired by this thread, I've noticed that this wiki doesn't have a dedicated cleanup thread for negativity.

As we all know, Complaining About Shows You Don't Like, Creator Bashing and other negativity isn't desired on the wiki, except in a few selected areas like reviews and several Darth Wiki pages (and even then, with limitations). And yet, it's one of the most common sins wiki contributors can make.

So, if you find a page, TLP or discussion whose content seems like a straight-up insult or any other bitching - including complainy soapboxing -, you might ask here for help with removing said content.

The sandbox for this project is located at Works That Require Cleanup of Complaining.

WesternAnimation.Baby Blues has some complaining/mentioning the reception in its description:

The show was subjected to much Executive Meddling to make it more like a copy of The Simpsons or Family Guy. The strip's creators weren't too thrilled with the results and neither were most of the audience. Not only was the show a critical failure (especially when compared to the more warm comic strip), but it suffered very poor ratings.

Since reception/value judgements aren't allowed in the description per How to Create a Work Page, what would be the best way to rewrite this? Or should it just be removed?

[up]Honestly doesn't sound too complainy to me. It could probably be moved to the Trivia page and split into the appropriate tropes.

[up][up]I think it can be split into the appropriate tropes mentioned at[up].

Are these entries from YMMV.Total Drama complaining? If so, do you all think they're salvageable? For the record, regardless of the second one, I don't think the first one counts because before AS he was mostly hated for the intended reasons (from what I know at least).
** This was probably what Scott's Chew Toy status in All-Stars was intended to be, but because he had taken a level in kindness and become a lot more sympathetic, many fans were not amused.
** Courtney's Humiliation Conga that led to her elimination (Gwen dropping her as a friend and alliance partner, Scott dumping her, a bird puking on her ice cream sundae which she was then forced to eat, sharks barfing on her making her cry, etc.) fell under this for several fans who hated Courtney for her portrayal in Action and onwards. However, many fans wanted Courtney to redeem herself, not only be punished.

The first one is low on context and I agree Scott doesn't really count. However, I don't think the latter is too bad, as it objectively describes fan reactions without derailing into complaining about the episode (which is a nice surprise, knowing this fandom and that episode).

I do some cleanup and then I enjoy shows you probably think are cringe.

So I was skimming long-standing pages and I noticed that Bowdlerise has a bit of snark issues, with some entries sounding a bit iffy.

On Bowdlerise.Yu Gi Oh:

  • They cut a reference to Mai having been a casino dealer on a cruise ship prior to playing in the tournament. Let that sink in. They cut a reference to gambling in a show centered on a card game. And yet gambling cards in Joey's deck are perfectly fine.

OMG FINALLY. I really do agree. It's filled with this whiny and smarmy vibe. I've seen lots of examples with those two traits even if I cant think of any right now.

Like, I'm browsing all the Anime subpages and there are a lot of those examples written in this super snarky, condiscendent tone, with the writer making hypotesis on why some things were edited instead of, don't know, set the facts straight. And of course don't forget the italics and bold abuse as to say "Yes, they're really that stupid"

I know Milli Vanilli is infamous for lip-synching nowadays, but does this entry in YMMV.The Adventures Of Super Mario Bros 3 sound a bit too much?

  • Narm:
    • Rather than taking the (in hindsight, logical) route of having professional actors dub over them, Rob and Fab of Milli Vanilli voice themselves in their spotlight episode. The result is every bit as magnificently awful as you'd expect:
      "Nooo."
      "Weh nuhds!"
      "Weh dweebs!"
      "This is tewwable!"

And in case you were wondering, yes, this was a thing.

Already deleted it, but just wanted to make sure I had the OK to remove this entry from Xenoblade Chronicles 3:

  • Audience-Alienating Ending: The ending of the game has received a mixed reception at best, with many players feeling deeply unsatisfied over how the erasure of Aionios and everyone in it basically renders all the work towards liberating the Colonies, helping them and their Heroes find closure to their personal issues, and all the development among the cast completely pointless. Not helping is the fact that the credits and The Stinger actively refuse to answer any questions regarding the fate of the main party, if they retain their memories from their time on Aionios, or if they'll ever see each other again. Not to mention how virtually none of the lingering questions about the "Klaus Saga" are answered despite this being touted as the definitive end of that.

Far as I remember, divisive/mixed reception is not nearly enough to qualify as AAE, especially since from what I've observed as a member of the fandom, while there is a belief that the game suffers from Disappointing Last Level, the ending itself is generally regarded as flawed but still good, with a lot of answers to what was confusing about the plot already there in the base game for those who paid close enough attention to the script, as indicated by the DLC's clarifications working primarily by explicitly confirming things that were already implied.

Likewise, pre-release statements indicate that this design choice was deliberate, and that the base game was designed to be be largely standalone to avoid Continuity Lockout, while the heavier fanservice and more overt callbacks were saved for the DLC.

I've got a bone to pick with this entry in Invisible Advertising:

First of all, unless I just haven't heard of it, I highly doubt anyone at Dream Works Animation has claimed that this film is responsible for their abandonment of traditonal animation. Second, everything after the introductory question is written in a complainy matter, but I don't know how to rewrite the entry without rendering it a ZCE. Any suggestions?

[up]I'm not even sure that's a valid example, since I remember constantly seeing commercials for that movie when I was younger. I know it's anecdotal evidence, but I just wanted to bring up that I saw quite a few ads for it.

[up](x3) I agree with its removal since it doesn't seem, well, "Audience-Alienating" enough.

[up](x4) Yeah, that comes off as complaining to me. I think it might also be too general to count.

I think the YMMV.The Adventures Of Super Mario Bros 3 entry can maybe be rewritten to be less mean, as opposed to cutting outright? Here's my try at it anyway:

Rob and Fab of Milli Vanilli voice themselves in their spotlight episode, and end up giving some enjoyably awkward line deliveries.

That Xenoblade 3 example sounds like a cut, though.

On Broken Base in YMMV.My Little Pony Friendship Is Magic S 4 E 14 Filli Vanilli: "Find The Music In You" is either an amazing work of quartet singing, or the same sort of lazy writing on par with "Born This Way" and "Wrecking Ball".

The example is alright, but I'm not sure if throwing two unrelated songs under the bus is necessary.

[up] Cut those. Besides random complaining, it dates the entry to when those songs were popular punching bags.

From YMMV.The Amazing Spider Man 2022, a set of examples with a similar theme:

  • Audience-Alienating Premise: Peter and MJ have broken up yet again after spending almost four years of real-life time together, MJ is with a completely new character with no concrete connection to the rest of the events, Pete is working for a currently-reformed Norman and dating Felicia... by the fourth issue, people were praying that the events of this run would be Ret-Gone by the time the next one picked up.
  • Broken Base: Most Spider-Man fans agree that this run is godawful and are clamoring for it to end, but there's some divide on the art by John Romita Jr. Some say that it's good despite the story, while others claim that inexpressive faces that fall straight into the Uncanny Valley at times, with some even comparing unfavorably it to the early days of Ctrl+Alt+Del, with the infamously stiff "B^U" faces characters had in the latter work.
  • Eight Deadly Words: By the third issue, people were sick of the dynamic of Peter and MJ being split up yet again, and the mystery box style storytelling. By the 900th issue special, several people swore off even Hate Reading the book as a result of Peter and Felicia becoming an Official Couple. As of writing, most Spidey fans are just exasperated because they know that when this run ends, Peter and MJ will get back together eventually, Paul will likely be killed off or Put on a Bus with his and MJ's kids, and Norman is going to go back to being the Green Goblin, because the Status Quo Is God in comics, and it's hard to care about such a drastic shake-up when the majority of it will be retconned or rewritten within the first year of the subsequent run. Not helping matters is that later into the run, Dan Slott, a controversial Spider-Man writer in his own right, has his own Spider-Man book is Spider-Man (2022), which has gotten much better reception, despite the plot being another Spider-Verse retread. Also not helping matters is the fact that Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is releasing in the middle of this run, featuring a version of Pete who not only is still together with MJ, but is in a healthy enough relationship to have a daughter with her.
  • It's the Same, Now It Sucks!: Even before the issue released people were already groaning in annoyance that Peter was going back to the status quo of being down on his luck, distant from his family and friends and separated from Mary Jane. That this happened less than a year since the ending of Nick Spencer's run that was dedicated to bringing back together Peter and MJ only made the dislike worse.
  • Tainted by the Preview: From the moment it was revealed that Peter would be separated from Mary Jane (again), people were expressing their outrage and dismay at Marvel's seeming lack of interest in keeping together one of the most popular superhero pairings that had been clamored for a long time.

It's YMMV, and some Spider-Man fans clearly do have very strong opinions the Peter and MJ relationship.

But from looking at this, you'd never know that this has consistently been one of the best selling comics of the last year, almost always placing in the top 10 across all publishers (for example - in Nov 22, when scheduling meant two issues in a single month, it got the #2 and #3 slots, only outsold by Batman).

In light of that, it feels like Audience-Alienating Premise is misuse, Eight Deadly Words may be misuse, and the rest could use some rephrasing to acknowledge that some fans are unhappy but it's also a major commercial success?

Question: Is the bolded part in this example from VideoGame.Star Wars Battlefront Renegade Squadron supposed to be a jab at the more recent films?

  • Beyond the Impossible: The members of Renegade Squadron perform several feats which break Star Wars lore (and that was before the Disney buyout, to boot). The bosses of the campaign include IG-88, Boba Fett, and Darth Vader. Renegade Squadron not only wins the fights, but judging by what the outcome of the battles, physically killed all three.

[up] It reads that way. Without more context the only obvious interpretation is "Disney is ignoring (or at least playing fast and loose with) established lore".

It also ignores the fact that the old EU broke it's own lore all the time.
