YMMV / BLACKPINK

Go To

  • Americans Hate Tingle: With the most Instagram followers of any K-pop idol note , Lisa is the most popular member of Blackpink in many international markets, especially in her native country of Thailand. However, she often lags behind the other members in South Korea in terms of popularity. Needless to say, she is still more popular than many other K-pop idols in South Korea given that she's a member of Blackpink.
  • Anvilicious: Boastful Raps and "empowering" breakup songs are nothing new for them, but some of the songs on Born Pink, most notably "Tally", drop the subtlety completely and become full-fledged female empowerment anthems. "Tally" embraces female sexual liberation and even drops the Cluster F-Bomb in an obvious act of defiance against the strict standards that idols, especially female idols, have to live up to.
"I say fuck it when I feel it, 'cause no one’s keeping tally. I do what I want with who I like."
  • Broken Base:
    • The fact that they're a double concept group has divided the fandom. Some are fine with it, thinking that it's a unique idea, while others prefer the edgy concept e.g. the black side.
    • Their feature in Justice League (2017) - was it a cool nod to fans, or was it shoehorned in and obnoxious? One thing fans agree on is that Ezra Miller's fanboying over them is absolutely adorable (although given Miller's later personal and legal issues, this has taken on a bit of Harsher in Hindsight).
    • Cardi B's feature on "Bet You Wanna." Some fans think she's a natural fit for the song and compliments Blackpink's style well. Others think Cardi B is way out of her element and Blackpink should have reached out to someone else for a feature.
    • Lisa's performance at Crazy Horse, a French cabaret revue. This prompted quite a bit of backlash from some Asian fans, who felt she was going too far in terms of exposure/eroticismnote , while Western fans cheered her on and said how proud they were that she had received such an opportunity (although further controversy arose when Crazy Horse appeared to say that it was actually Lisa and her team who had approached them first).
      • Her alleged relationship with Frédéric Arnault (CEO of Tag Heuer) is this as well, with some fans attempting to start rumors/controversy about anything and everything related to the two.
  • Cargo Ship: Due to Rosé being on the floor in the "Boombayah" and "As If It's Your Last" music videos - and in live performances - a joke ship of Rosé and the floor exists - 'flosé'.
  • Fandom Rivalry:
    • With Blackjacks. Fans of 2NE1, due to them being misblamed for causing the disbandment of the senior group, despite the fact that Blackpink's debut was set to happen back in 2012. A large part of the ire towards Blackpink is also how they were apparently conceived as a "pretty" version of 2NE1. The 2NE1 members' well-known struggles with Korean beauty standards have obviously made many sympathetic to them, but it shouldn't be a reason to hate on Blackpink, who themselves have not been immune to the harsh beauty standards and misogyny of society.
      • On the other hand, this has been mostly averted with fans of BABYMONSTER, a group who YG was hyping as "Blackpink's successor" (with members Ahyeon and Pharita being seemingly primed to take over Jennie and Lisa's stardom in particular)... Only for their debut to be considered underwhelming by fans on multiple levels. The opinion of most fans is that it's not the girls' fault, and they support both groups.
    • With fans of BTS. When Blackpink started to blow up internationally, some circles hyped them up as the Distaff Counterpart to BTS, which other circles did not appreciate. It doesn’t help that, despite being the most popular Girl Group in K-pop, Blackpink is perpetually in second place (behind BTS) when it comes to popularity in the industry as a whole.
    • With fans of aespa, another popular four-piece girl group, due to the groups' similar styles (though aespa's has more focus on electronics and futuristic concepts). It doesn't help that Blackpink's Jennie and aespa's Ningning even look similar.
    • Fans of Blackpink, the most popular K-pop girl group internationally, vs. fans of TWICE, the second most popular (at least among third-generation groups). It boils down to the groups having near-polar opposite styles (Blackpink being generally Darker and Edgier; Twice being generally Lighter and Softer) and Twice being one of the only girl groups who can stand a chance competing with Blackpink to become the most popular due to Twice having been dubbed the Nation's Girl Group relatively early in their career.
    • Tensions extend, to a lesser extent, to the fandoms of Red Velvet and GFRIEND, the other most popular third-generation girl groups (though this has waned since Gfriend disbanded and Red Velvet was overtaken by aespa as the most popular SM Entertainment girl group internationally).
  • Fountain of Memes: Jisoo is considered one of the funniest members (along with Lisa) and is the probably the most quotable, especially when she speaks English. She's not as fluent as the others, but she still understands it well enough to be a funny smartass when she speaks it, in addition to her being a natural oddball in any language she speaks. These are some of her most memetic quotes:
    "I'm Jisoo, I'm okay."
    "Not bad but not good."
    "I'm not scary."
"NO! He's my son! No, never! Dalgom is mine!"
    "So cool."
    "Dance!"
"I have English name [...] Jisoo Turtle Rabbit Kim."
    "My heart so bounce."
    "Only me. Sorry. Not sorry"
"I saw a flower this morning, and there it was, the most precious thing ever, until I met you."
  • Friendly Fandoms: On the other hand, Red Velvet fans — Reveluvs — have developed a strong rapport with Blackpink fans, mostly due to the budding friendship between the groups, dubbed as BlackVelvet and fans happily calling themselves Revelinks. note
    • Blinks, Neverlands and Cheshires tend to get on quite well due to the friendship between Lisa, (G)I-DLE's Minnie and CLC's Sorn. The latter has posted vlogs featuring the three hanging out note  and photos on her Instagram have been credited as being taken by Lisa.
  • It's Popular, Now It Sucks!: Post-"Ddu-du Ddu-du" and increasingly more so past the release of Born Pink, Blackpink has become one of the few k-pop acts to reach international superstardom, and has attracted a lot of hate as a result.
  • Memetic Mutation:
  • Narm: Lisa’s rap in the Japanese version of "Ddu-du Ddu-du". You don’t normally hear a Spongebob Squarepants character get name-dropped in a Boastful Rap.
"Bitch, I’m a star but no Patrick."
  • She Really Can Act: No one was necessarily expecting Jisoo to be, as an "actress face" doesn't translate to a musician who can or would want to act professionally outside their music videos. But her brief turn as a tragic Love Interest to Song Joong-ki's character in Arthdal Chronicles was a One-Scene Wonder. Jisoo made an impressive meal out of the single word of dialogue she had. Her lead role in Snowdrop also shows that she is a natural actress, with her winning the Seoul International Drama Award for Outstanding Korean Actress.
  • Signature Song: "Ddu-Du Ddu-Du", "Kill This Love", and "How You Like That" are the main candidates, with "Boombayah" and "As If It's Your Last" not far behind. "How You Like That" is notable for having its dance video have more views than the actual MV, despite the MV also being in the billion views club. "Ddu-Du Ddu-Du" had its video reach two billion views in January 2023, making it the most-viewed video by a female Korean act.
  • Stuck in Their Shadow: Jisoo has always had her fans, but, for the longest time, was the least popular member by a significant margin in the West, to the point where more casual fans ignored her. She has little promotion outside of Korea, usually has the fewest lines, is not as fluent in English as the others, and was the last member to get a solo. However, she has been firmly rescued from the shadows since starring in Snowdrop.
  • Testosterone Brigade: Not as big as some other K-pop girl groups, but still there. It's inevitable when four very attractive idols make up one of the most famous girl groups in any industry, not just K-pop, with no fewer than two of them having been crowned the World's Most Beautiful Woman. Jisoo, in particular, has the Fan Nickname "man's heart destroyer" given by Naver users.
  • The Woobie: The protagonist of Rosé's solo song "Gone". It's a standard breakup song, but Rosé's delivery of it shows a more vulnerable side that contrasts the Lyrical Dissonance of Jennie's "Solo" and the group's "Lovesick Girls".
"I pack my bags and go. This don't feel like home. Too much darkness for a rainbow. I feel so used. How am I supposed to live without you? I refuse."
