"The girls we met in winter, their infinite possibilities."

GFRIEND (여자친구) is a six-member South Korean Girl Group formed by the small label Source Music, later acquired by Big Hit Entertainment on July 28, 2019. The group debuted on January 16, 2015 with the lead single “Glass Bead”, gathering several rookie awards. Dubbed “powerful innocence” for their innocent concepts and hard hitting dance moves, breaking the stereotype of weakness associated with young girls. GFRIEND continued their success with a school trilogy followed by the summery “Me Gustas Tu” and the snowy “Rough (Running Through Time)". On July 11, 2016 GFRIEND released their first full album "LOL" in two versions - "Lots of Love" and "Laughing Out Loud" maintaining their synth pop retro sound.

In 2018, the group started a new concept following an orchestral pop sound named "passionate melancholy" with the release of their lead single "Time for the Moon Night", in this way, cementing GFRIEND's lore. The overarching storyline revolves around the friendship of a group of girls while they grow up surrounded by a fantasy story, where they need to deal with how friendship crumbles and how you can't completely change the past.

Tropes that apply to GFRIEND:

    General Tropes
  • Awesome, but Impractical: "Navillera"'s original choreography had a butterfly formation move too impractical to perform with the song, they did it for a special stage.
  • Childhood Friends: Eunha and Sinb.
  • Cloud Cuckoo Lander: Yuju who imitates inanimate objects. Other members refer to her as "GFRIEND's Very Weird Person". Yerin, the way she acts is very odd and funny.
  • Contagious Laughter: Sinb makes people laugh with her own laughter. Yerin's laugh is very though and loud so it makes you laugh.
  • Cute Clumsy Girl: Yerin famously somehow managed to knee herself in the face while dancing on Running Man.
  • Determinator: Yuju. Nothing will stop her from finishing their performance. And by nothing, we mean nothing. Not accidentally having one of her shoes slipped off on stage. Not even falling down at least four times and suffering a twisted finger as a result of those falls as seen on that legendary fancam performance will stop her. Also, after she broke her hand, she performed quite a few times while wearing a cast.
  • Expy: Sinb is widely regarded as this to Jessica Jung (former member of Girls' Generation).
  • Foreshadowing: Their song Fingertip was foreshadowed beforehand by the group without the fans realizing until when the song came out, particularly the words "Tang Tang Tang". On Showtime, there are several moments where they said the words "Tang Tang Tang" on camera. In addition, during the behind the scenes of their appearance in the 2017 Idol Star Athletic Championship, Sowon is caught on camera speaking the words "Fingertip daebak!".
  • Friend to All Children: Sowon likes children and often takes care of Gfriend's CEO's kids. When asked about her biggest dream she responded that she'd like to be a good mother.
  • Genki Girl: All the girls can be considered this but especially Yerin, Yuju and Sinb who are constantly energetic and talkative on shows and interviews.
  • Hotter and Sexier: Their outfits and video for their cover of Mamamoo's "You're the Best" on Showtime.
    • If the teasers for their upcoming release "Fingertip" are any indication, it's going to be this (At least by GFriend's standards).
  • I Can Still Fight!: The legendary fancam of GFRIEND performing "Me Gustas Tu" on a slippery stage. Yuju and Sinb picked themselves up despite falling hard at least 4 or 5 times throughout the entire performance. The video deservingly went viral and further propelled the group into popularity for their professionalism.
  • Inelegant Blubbering: after their first win on a music show (especially Yerin).
  • Irony: Sinb hates pink but their stylists make her wear pink outfits. She even dyed her hair pink!
  • Masculine Girl, Feminine Boy: The duet of Yuju with Sunyoul from UP10TION can be seen this way unintentionally.
  • Jack-of-All-Trades: Yuju can sing, dance, play the guitar, write lyrics, skating, run fast and gymnastics.
  • Oh, Crap!: Eunha tends to spoil the new songs before the release. You have to see the members faces when this happens.
  • One Steve Limit: Eunha's real name (Jung Eunbi) is the same as Sinb's (Hwang Eunbi).
  • Proud Beauty: Sowon said that her stage name was going to be "P.B." that means "Perfect and Beautiful". Also is said that she looks at the mirror very often.
  • Pun: Each of the members name-drops themselves in “Sunny Summer”.
    • Umji once performed with Hong Jin Young as the latter promoted her song "Thumb Up" (Umji Cheok/엄지척).
  • School Uniforms Are the New Black: With the exception of "Me Gustas Tu", almost all their stage outfits are variations of female school uniforms.
  • She's Got Legs: Sowon maybe have the longest legs in K-pop industry. Yuju and Yerin fit this trope too.
  • Shrinking Violet: Sowon said that Eunha was very shy and quiet when they met.
  • Stage Name:
    • Kim Sojung - Sowon ("Wish")
    • Jung Eunbi - Eunha ("Galaxy")
    • Choi Yuna - Yuju
    • Hwang Eunbi - Sinb ("Mystery")
    • Kim Yewon - Umji ("Thumb")
  • Surprisingly Good English: Umji and Yuju.
  • Team Dad: Sinb is jokingly seen as this by the other members, as she often is the one who fixes broken appliances at their dorm.
  • Team Mom: Being the eldest out of the 6, Sowon is regarded as this.
  • Tender Tears: Both Yerin and Umji cried out of pity during the performance when Yuju kept falling.
  • The Cutie: This feature was enchanced by Eunha's bob short haircut.
  • The Leader: Sowon named by Source Music.
  • The Show Must Go On:
    • Aforementioned legendary fancam of "Me Gustas Tu".
    • Also during this Navillera stage Sinb dislocated her shoulder, but she just kept dancing using only one hand.
  • Tomboy/Shorttank: Most of them are at times, but especially Sinb.
  • Tomboy and Girly Girl: Sinb's tomboy to Eunha's girly girl.
  • Tomboy with a Girly Streak: Sinb has a very boyish attitude but she still has interest in fashion and is a crybaby.
  • Trying Not to Cry: Yerin received hateful comments for looking "ugly" and "fake" after she cried on camera. Since then she tries her hardest not to cry or at least not to be seen while doing so.
  • Tsundere: Sinb who seems cold and rude is really kind and cares for her fans and friends.
  • Why Did It Have to Be Heights?: Yuju is scared of heights. So naturally this gets exploited during their appearance in Showtime.
    Music Tropes
  • Album Intro Track: Almost every album has one.
  • Christmas Songs: "Sunny Summer" has a special version called "Snowy Winter".
  • Homage: "Navillera" is a neologism created by the Korean poet Cho Chi-hun in the poem “The Nun’s Dance” to describe a fluttering action similar to the movement of a butterfly.
  • Incredibly Long Note: Yuju in almost every title track and also some bsides like "Windy Windy" and "My Buddy". They changed it from "Sunrise", giving a high note for half of the members.
  • One-Word Title: "Rough", "Navillera", "Fingertip", "Memoria", "Sunrise", "Flower", "Fever" and many others.
  • Self Empowerment Anthem:
    • "Glass Bead"":
We may seem like a clear glass bead, but we won't break that easily.
    • "Fever"
A big flower breathing in this small world, I think I know how to love myself.
  • Title Drop: Some examples:
    • "na na na navillera..."
    • "me gustas tu, gustas tu su tu tu ru..."
    • "tang tang tang fingertip..."
    • "hey, sunny summer..."
