The Future of Culture Technology

SM Entertainment is a multinational entertainment company based in South Korea. Founded by musician Lee Soo-Man in 1989, it is the one of the most successful K-Pop labels and is credited as a leader in "hallyu," the international expansion of Korean entertainment.

SM was the label who created the trainee model that has become a staple of the K-Pop industry ever since, and as one of the "Big 3" (along with fellow labels YG and JYP) is largely responsible for the conventions and perceptions associated with Korean idols and the industry in general. Along with their performers, they also have a roster of in-house songwriters and producers. While mostly known for their music, they act as a talent agency for actors and actresses as well.

In 2023, SM Entertainment was embroiled in a contentious bidding war over a controlling stake in the company between communications company Kakao (backed by CEO Chris Lee) and rival K-Pop label HYBE (backed by Lee Soo-Man). Kakao's eventual acquisition led longtime songwriter and producer Yoo Young-Jin to immediately leave while Soo-Man departed from the company after HYBE withdrew from the takeover, forming his own company in China.

SM has various subsidiaries with their own rosters, including ESteem Entertainment, KeyEast, Mystic Story, ScreaM Records, and Woollim Entertainment.
