- All-Star Cast: The film stars Alicia Vikander, Dane DeHaan, Jack O'Connell, Holliday Grainger and Christoph Waltz. Even the supporting cast includes Tom Hollander, Matthew Morrison, Kevin McKidd, Douglas Hodge, Joanna Scanlan, Zach Galifianakis, and Judi Dench.
- Box Office Bomb: Budget, $25 million. Box office, $7,884,436.
- California Doubling: This movie is set in the Netherlands, but was entirely shot in the UK (in Norfolk, Suffolk, and at Pinewood Studios).
- Channel Hop: The film originally began production at Paramount before going to The Weinstein Company (Paramount still got credited for the film). Then when The Weinstein Company went under, Lionsgate picked up the home video/streaming rights.
- Creator Backlash: Cara Delevingne is ashamed of her appearance in the film because of bad experiences with executive producer Harvey Weinstein. Namely, her role in the film was essentially Weinstein's "compensation" for having sexually harassed her and propositioned her for a threesome in a hotel room.
- Creator Killer: The Harvey Weinstein scandal that came out later certainly played a bigger part in killing The Weinstein Company, but this film's box office failure probably didn't help them take such a significant hit, either.
- Fake Nationality: None of the Dutch characters are played by Dutch actors. The one coming the closest is Dane DeHaan, who has some Dutch ancestry and whose last name is Dutch.
- The Shelf of Movie Languishment: The film was shot in 2014, but wasn't released until 2017 after being postponed several times.
- What Could Have Been:
- The film was originally planned to be made in 2004, with Jude Law, Keira Knightley and Jim Broadbent in the lead roles (though other sources mention Natalie Portman instead of Knightley) and Steven Spielberg producing through DreamWorks SKG. However, production was halted days before it was scheduled to start filming as a result of changes in tax rules affecting film production in the UK.
- Matthias Schoenaerts was in talks for the male lead but turned it down. He was replaced by Dane DeHaan. Schoenaerts ended up co-starring with Alicia Vikander in The Danish Girl.
- Harry Styles was offered the role of Mattheus, but turned it down due to scheduling conflicts and Matthew Morrison was cast instead.
