Love can come in many different shapes and forms. Some people openly express their feelings, while some choose to quietly watch over their love wishing only for their happiness. But a Daimon targeting a Pure Heart for their own evil plans?! That's definitely not love! In the Name of the Moon, I'll punish you!”
Usagi Tsukino

(CWi Episode: "Mixed Emotions")

Yuuichirou notices how Rei has begun taking intense meditation periods and believes that she's falling for him at last. But after several misunderstandings involving Haruka, he makes the decision to leave the Hikawa Shrine, much to Rei's devastation.

Tropes in this episode include:

  • All for Nothing: While alone with Michiru, Haruka briefly wonders if their mission was a waste of time if the disastrous events will happen regardless of their actions.
  • Anger Born of Worry: Rei's anger towards Yuuichirou is over the fact that he chose not to talk to her directly about his problems or even give her a proper goodbye.
  • Attack Reflector: As a monster born from electricity, Toden can simply return Jupiter's Sparkling Wide Pressure attack.
  • Battle in the Rain: It's pouring with a chance of thunder when Yuuichirou challenges Haruka to throw hands.
  • Blatant Lies: After Haruka asks if she'll go after Yuuichirou, Rei asserts that she doesn't care about him or his choices. She says as she picks up his jacket with upset eyes.
  • But Now I Must Go: Believing that Rei has fallen in love with Haruka, Yuuichirou decides that it's time for him to leave the Hikawa Shrine and figure out where his life should go next. Thankfully after the Daimon attack, Rei takes him out for coffee and he decides to stay at the shrine.
  • Call-Back:
  • Chained to a Railway: Toden summons metal tracks to bind the Guardians onto the ground so she can run them over. Fortunately she's stopped by a Paper Talisman from Mars.
  • Continuity Nod:
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: Yuuichirou ends up losing his fist fight against Haruka. It's Played for Laughs since he kept charging and tripping over himself while Haruka just dodges and expresses disinterest in the whole debacle.
  • Excellent Judge of Character: Unlike Usagi who believes that Rei is exhausted over love, Makoto correctly deduces that the source of her concern comes from the new enemies and how to deal with them.
  • Foreshadowing: During Rei's fire reading, the flames form the vague shape of a cup, representing the Holy Grail.
  • Friendship Moment: Related to the above, Makoto assures Rei that she doesn't have to be the only one to stress out over the enemy and that she can count on her and the others for support. Rei is flattered by her offer and thanks her for the suggestion.
  • Funny Background Event: While Rei is helping Yuuichirou after awakening at the train station, Usagi can be seen in the background giddily enjoying the development between the two of them before the other girls pull her away.
  • Graceful Loser: Believing himself to have lost the fight for Rei's heart, Yuuichirou coldly tells Haruka to break up with "his" other woman so that Rei can be truly happy.
  • Gut Feeling: Usagi believes that her "woman's intuition" is what's telling her that Rei is falling for Yuuichirou. The girls, however, believe her intuition in general needs to be double checked.
  • I Am Not Pretty: Yuuichirou sheepishly denies Usagi's claim of him being a handsome devil.
  • I Want My Beloved to Be Happy: After losing his fight with Haruka and accepting "him" as the superior suitor, Yuuichirou decides to give up his romantic pursuit for Rei accepting that she's better off with Haruka.
  • It Was a Gift: Early in the episode, Yuuichirou gives Rei one of his uniform's ribbons to keep her hair safe from the sacred fire. While she's getting a lift from Haruka, she uses the ribbon to tie her hair, even calling it her good luck charm.
  • Mistaken for Cheating: Played With. They were never an official couple, but Yuuichirou assumes Rei had fallen in love with Haruka after seeing how cool "he" was towards her. He assumes it's happening again when he sees Haruka having a romantic moment in the moonlight with Michiru.
  • Nightmare Face: Grandpa Hino gives one to prank his pupil who's spying on his granddaughter.
  • Not Bad: Sailor Neptune comments on how the Inners did a pretty good job in defeating Toden by themselves.
  • Oh, Crap!: Yuuichirou gets this reaction after seeing Rei being sweettalked by resident heartthrob Haruka. He gets another one when Rei tells him that she's a woman whom he tried to pick a fight against.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: The usually wackadoodle Professor Tomoe expresses a burst of outrage at Kaolinite for letting his Daimon eggs go to waste.
  • Poor Communication Kills: Alot of the episode's drama could have been avoided if Yuuichirou simply talked with either Rei or Haruka about what was going on between them rather then letting his emotions get the better of him. He doesn't even try to speak with Rei as he's leaving forever.
  • Pre Ass Kicking One Liner: Sailor Mars does this just before defeating the Toden with Burning Mandala.
Sailor Mars (original): The price for Yuuichirou's heart is a heavy one. Prepare yourself!
Sailor Mars (Viz Dub): Here's what happens when you try to steal a good man's heart!
  • Race for Your Love: After getting a pep talk from her friends, Rei decides to rush off to reach Yuuichirou before he disappears from her life forever.
  • Recurring Dreams: Rei mentions having had the same dream about the upcoming Silence ever since it's first appearance.
  • Running Gag: Like the Daimons before her, Toden expresses safety protocols while attacking the Guardians and neutralizing Jupiter's thunder attack.
  • Secret Test of Character: Exploited. Kaolinite places the next egg in a street car where it will scan the various civilians who use it throughout it's service. The one who enters the car and awakens the Daimon will be considered worthy of having a Pure Heart.
  • Sentimental Music Cue: As the street rat makes his departure, the heartbreaking melody "Azusa Nigou" can be heard playing in the background.
  • Thinks Like a Romance Novel: While spying on Yuuichriou who's spying on Rei, Usagi begins to commentate on the situation of the hopeless romantic like if she was reading a shoujo manga. She even deduces that Rei being unable to go to sleep is because she's lovesick.
  • This Is Unforgivable!: Yuuichirou vows vengeance after seeing Haruka, whom he believed Rei was crushing on, having a special moment with another woman (Michiru).
  • Throw the Dog a Bone: In the episode's end, Rei invites Yuuichirou to take her out for some coffee.
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: Usagi, being the show's Shipper on Deck, proudly assumes that Rei is meditating to determine if she and Yuuichirou will get married. This ultimately results in Yuuichirou picking a fight with Haruka before deciding to leave the shrine.
  • Weaponized Car: After being infused by a Daimon egg, a public streetcar turns into a humanoid monster girl called Toden who goes after Yuuichirou's Pure Heart.
  • Wins by Doing Absolutely Nothing: Haruka is the victor of Yuuichirou's fight as the man kept getting hurt charging at her while she just dodged his attacks.
  • The Workaholic: Rei has begun meditating at night to find potential clues about her frightening dreams. To her dismay, this leaves her bone tired during the following mornings.
  • You Are Not Alone: Makoto takes a moment to assure Rei that she doesn't have to worry about the new enemy alone and that she can count on them to help her through her worries.
  • You Cannot Fight Fate: Michiru tells her girlfriend that "the wheel of fortune" is already spinning and will not stop. So they'll have to do their parts in preparation.
  • You Have GOT to Be Kidding Me!: Haruka says the phrase with ease after Yuuichirou charges after her like a madman.
