Recap / Rupert S 02 E 03 Rupert And The Leprechauns

Go To

On Rupert's first day at his new job at Mr. Chimp's store, he's assigned to deliver groceries to a newcomer in town, Mr. Crum. On the way there, he bumps into a leprechaun caught in a trap. It turns out Mr. Crum came here fleeing a tribe of leprechauns because he's currently in possession of an amulet they and his family have been fighting over for generations. Why? Because centuries ago, the leprechaun king gave it to Crum's ancestor as a reward for saving his life... no, Crum's ancestor stole it, so the leprechauns stole it right back, so the Crums stole it right back... And now Rupert's caught in the middle, trying, as usual, to help the two enemies become friends. He's really got his work cut out for him this time...

This episode provides examples of:

  • Affirmative Action Girl: Seána, a female leprechaun; traditionally, leprechauns were a (male) One-Gender Race.
  • Bag of Kidnapping: Crum stuffs Owen in one.
  • Birdcaged: The cage Crum holds Owen in is shaped like this.
  • Breaking the Bonds: It takes a while, but Rupert's able to rip himself out of the vines the leprechauns used to tie him up.
  • Cats Are Mean: Crum's cat Tiny is a well-trained leprechaun hunter.
  • Caught in a Snare: Rupert meets Owen when he's hanging from one of these.
  • Character Witness: Owen assures the other leprechauns they can trust Rupert after the latter saved him from one of Crum's traps.
  • Chekhov's Gun: When they first meet, Owen promises to grant Rupert a wish if he releases him from the trap. Rupert wishes for the Sure Shot Striker, the football (soccer ball, in American) he's been saving up for, but Owen reveals in true leprechaun fashion that he lied. At the end of the episode, Crum sends it to Rupert as a thank you for pushing them to resolve the endless feud.
  • Crucified Hero Shot: The leprechauns tie Rupert in vines in this position.
  • Cycle of Revenge: "They stole it, we stole it, they stole it, we stole it, they stole it, we stole it..."
  • Didn't Think This Through: When Rupert sees how his mum gets his father and Podgy's dad to forget their little spat by serving them both strawberry tarts, he gets the idea to try it on Crum and the leprechauns. It turns out, what stops a minor argument between friends doesn't work so well for sworn enemies who have been fighting and making the other side miserable for generations.
  • Enemy Mine: Both sides drop the amulet and run to help when Rupert and Aidan get trapped in a burning barn.
  • Escalating War: Given that the "theft" of the amulet is still the leprechauns' and Crum's biggest grudge against each other, it's safe to assume none of the skirmishes between the groups got too serious, such as nearly getting someone killed, but they finally reach that point here.
  • Everyone Has Standards: Crum has no problem holding Owen captive for ransom, but when he sees the leprechaun's about to be turned into clover, he's ready to let him go to stop it.
Crum: Not even a leprechaun deserves a fate like this.
  • Feuding Families: The Crums vs. the leprechauns.
  • Forced Transformation: "If a leprechaun's tied and bound, he'll turn to clover at sundown!"
  • Four-Leaf Clover: The amulet sports this design.
  • Generation Xerox: Invoked — When Crum saves Aidan from the fire, Aidan takes this as proof his ancestor actually did save the life of the leprechaun king, so his family deserves the amulet.
  • Good Luck Charm: Discussed — After he ends up in possession of the amulet that's been FAR more trouble than it's worth, Rupert plans to use it as this. If anything, all indications are it's the opposite.
  • Honor Before Reason: So what special powers does the amulet have? Absolutely none. What valuable material is it made of? Absolutely none. Why do both sides want it so badly? HONOR!
  • Hostage for MacGuffin: Crum does this with Owen.
  • Know When to Fold 'Em: Sometimes, the prize just isn't worth the fight.
  • MacGuffin: The amulet everyone wants for no reason except that the other side has it.
  • Mistaken for Spies: The leprechauns (minus Owen) attack Rupert when they first see him leave Cru'’s house, mistaking him for a spy for their enemy.
  • My God, You Are Serious!: Crum initially thinks Owen's trying to trick him when he warns him he'll turn to clover if Crum keeps him locked up. When that actually starts to happen, Crum's horrified.
  • New Job Episode: Rupert's delivery on the first day of his new job is what leads to him getting caught up in the feud.
  • No Antagonist: It's notable that neither Mr. Crum nor the leprechauns are ultimately portrayed as "the bad guy." It's the hatred between the two parties, not one of the parties themselves, that serves as the force to be defeated.
  • Pride: The amulet itself is nothing more than a tacky green pendant with no inherent value or use whatsoever. Both sides only want it because they refuse to admit defeat.
  • Rhymes on a Dime: Leprechauns occasionally do this for fun, but it's not required.
  • Riddle for the Ages: Was Mr. Crum's ancestor a thief or a hero? No one will ever know.
  • Right-Hand Attack Dog: Tiny (ironically, a cat) serves as this for Crum against the leprechauns.
  • Running Gag: The display of cans falling over in Mr. Chimp's store.
  • Sacrificed Basic Skill for Awesome Training: Rupert can fight fire-breathing dragons, evil elves with ice powers, evil sorcerers, and cutthroat pirates without breaking a sweat, but he can't push a broom for a few minutes without knocking stuff over.
  • Shut Up and Save Me!:
Rupert: (to someone hanging by one foot from an elevated snare) You're a leprechaun!
Owen: Brilliant observation, lad. You might also have noticed that I'm an upside-down leprechaun! Now please, set me free!
  • Soul-Sucking Retail Job: It's Rupert's first day at his retail job, and he already sounds utterly dead inside at the start of the episode.
  • Take a Third Option: After Aidan and Crum both admit they couldn't care less about the actual amulet and they have no desire to fight anymore, they keep trying to make the other take it. "You take it/YOU take it!/YOU take it!/YOU take it!..." Finally, Rupert tells them all, "I'LL take it!" They happily agree.
  • Unreliable Expositor: Crum and the leprechauns tell completely opposite versions of what happened between Crum's ancestor and the leprechaun king, and there's no way to tell who (if either of them!) is right.
