Recap / Family Guy S21 E4: "The Munchurian Candidate"

Go To

Lois hypnotizes Peter into being satisfied over her sexual fantasies; Stewie tries to win over Brian and Chris by renovating his treehouse.

Tropes:

  • Aesop Collateral Damage: Lois learned it was wrong to brainwash Peter into sexually satisfying her. And in the process, Peter gets emotionally scarred for life after discovering he performed oral sex on his mother-in-law, and later has to be restrained from doing it to Meg. On top of the fact that he was having sex with Lois against his will throughout the whole episode.
  • Bullying a Dragon: From their experiences with Stewie, as well as the part where he was ready to shoot them with a crossbow, you'd think Brian and Chris would be a bit wiser about trash-talking him within earshot. Naturally, they continue to insult him after he made it clear he would've shot them otherwise.
  • Bungled Hypnotism: Lois takes Peter to a couples therapist to try and convince him to perform oral sex. When talking to him doesn't work, she suggests hypnotizing him. Unfortunately, during the hypnosis the Extra theme plays on Peter's phone, which becomes the trigger phrase for his hypnotic state. Lois is fine with it, until Peter inadvertently ends up giving Babs oral sex because he walked in her on while she was watching Extra.
  • Call-Back: Like in Season 5, Babs was pretty receptive to having a sexual liaison with Peter. Although Peter himself seems to have changed his mind since then.
  • Chekhov's Boomerang: The Extra theme. It gets introduced as Peter’s hypnotic trigger when it accidentally plays on his phone in the middle of his hypnosis at a sex therapy session. It ends up working, putting Peter in a state where he can perform oral sex with no discomfort or memory of it. That’s all fine until Peter brings up some food for an ill Babs as she's watching Extra during a family dinner.
  • Cool and Unusual Punishment: After roughing up and tying up Brian and Chris for all their insults about his treehouse, Stewie makes it clear that he intends to make them suffer. He then resumes the torture... by force-feeding Brian and Chris some of the quiches he bought from Costco that they had insulted earlier.
  • Disproportionate Retribution: Stewie decides to get back at Brian and Chris for insulting his treehouse multiple times by assaulting them, force feeding them, tying them up, and shooting them with a crossbow.
  • Double Standard Rape: Female on Male: Because Peter was hypnotized into having oral sex with Lois (complete with a trigger phrase), it wasn't consensual. Nobody comments on this, not even the therapist who suggested it. It only becomes a problem when Peter has oral sex with another woman due to the trigger phrase being said at the worst possible time.
  • Downer Ending: At least for Peter and Lois. Not only are the two of them horribly traumatized for what happened at Carter's house, but Peter is still under the hypnosis trigger word, which just so happens to go off when Meg is present, with Lois knowing exactly what Peter is going to do.
  • Driven to Suicide: After shooting Chris and Brian for repeatedly insulting him, his treehouse and crossbow, Stewie shoots himself after seeing Meg topless. Meg treats this as if this is a regular occurrence.
  • Here We Go Again!: The Stinger has Meg turn on the TV with the Extra theme playing. Lois holds Peter back as he starts clawing his way over the couch towards Meg, with Meg being none the wiser to what previously occurred.
  • Idiot Ball: Brian and Chris. After Stewie makes it clear he won't let any insults slide, they trash-talk him again, leading to him shooting them both.
  • The Immodest Orgasm: Lois has a habit of screaming board and card games' names during hers.
  • Jerkass: Brian and Chris. After Stewie shows off his treehouse, Brian and Chris are overheard saying some insulting things about it, and end up hurting Stewie’s feelings, twice. They do it a third time after he lets them free and insult his crossbow.
  • Kick the Dog: Both Brian and Chris needlessly insult Stewie's treehouse behind his back (twice), even though Stewie was only trying to impress them.
  • Love Father, Love Son: Due to the trigger phrase going off at the worst possible time, Peter performs oral sex on Babs, his mother-in-law, in a hypnotic trance.
  • Never My Fault: Brian refuses to acknowledge his part in Stewie's ridicule and blames it all on Chris.
  • No Good Deed Goes Unpunished: Peter just wanted to bring Babs her dinner to help her feel better, and thanks to hearing Extra he performed oral sex on her and gets traumatized.
  • Oh, Crap!: Lois has this when she finds out Babs is watching celebrity news programs and she hears the Extra theme. Peter joins in after realizing what he just did.
  • One Drink Will Kill the Baby: Lois looks at a picture of Susie Swanson on Bonnie's Facebook page, and after getting a good look at the baby's supposedly deformed eyes, remarks that "maybe one glass a night wasn't fine."
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: After finding out that he performed oral sex on Lois' mother Babs, Peter and Lois spend Act 3 and The Stinger driving home in complete silence with no music playing during their scenes, excluding a brief sample of Weird Al's parody song "Eat it" as Peter turns on the radio.
  • Parental Incest: Lois has to try to prevent Peter from attempting this on their daughter Meg after she turned on the TV and Extra happened to be playing, triggering Peter.
  • Pink Is Erotic: Peter is hypnotized into fulfilling Lois' sexual desires and when he's in this state, he imagines he's at the beach licking ice cream. Unfortunately, his hypnosis is triggered while he's giving his mother-in-law her dinner, and the scene cuts to Peter sitting on a pink deckchair under a pink umbrella as he's licking ice cream. When Lois tries to stop him, she's too late and Peter is horrified to learn that he's just performed oral sex on a very satisfied Babs.
  • Portmantitle: The episode title combines "munch" (as in cunnilingus) with The Manchurian Candidate.
  • Remember the New Guy?: Averted when Donna flatly asks who the hell the new lady in the booth with her, Lois and Bonnie is, and wonders why she is there. The new lady's cutesy habit of calling Lois 'Lo-ey' also throws Lois off.
  • Riddle for the Ages: After the incident at the Pewterschmidt manor, Peter and Lois notice during their ride home that Lois' parents are trying to call them individually. Because they ignore the calls, it's never known if it's about said incident and/or their reaction.
  • Rule of Three: Lois screams, Peter screams and Babs lets out a sigh of satisfaction.
  • Say My Name: Just as soon as Lois hears the Extra theme at her parents' house, she yells out to Peter as she rushes to their room, only to arrive too late and see everything Peter just did. Alex Borstein clearly gives it her all as she loudly screams his name the final time; she sounds genuinely horrified. The fact that this isn't played for laughs just makes it all worse. Screaming at Squick doesn't even begin to describe it.
  • Shout-Out:
    • Chrissy Teigen cyberbullies someone, referring to several incidents that nearly derailed the model's career.
    • The title is a reference to the film The Manchurian Candidate.
    • "Eat It", a parody of Michael Jackson's "Beat It" by Weird Al Yankovic, plays during the car ride home.
    • When Peter goes down on Lois, a viral video from 2017 plays of a fat man going down a water slide in Mexico.
  • Stock Audio Clip: Peter's screaming after he snaps out of his trance and realizes what he did to Babs is taken from the scene in "Stewie Loves Lois" where Dr. Hartman first attempts to give him a prostate exam.
  • Take That!: The whole reason the plot happens is that Peter apparently gets Push notifications "whenever Chrissy Teigen cyberbullies a nobody."
  • Toilet Humor: After his first night going down on Lois in his hypnotized state, all Peter remembers is farting the Pledge of Allegiance.
I tell ya, things got a little dicey there on "indivisible."
  • Too Dumb to Live: Chris and Brian insult Stewie's treehouse again after he lets them go. As in about ten seconds after being released, they do the very same thing that caused Stewie to take them hostage and threaten to shoot them in the first place. At that point, they're just begging for Stewie to do it.
  • Trigger Phrase: The one used to trigger Peter's hypnotic state for oral sex was supposed to be "vanilla ice cream." However, the Extra theme happens to play during the couples therapy session, and that ends up becoming the trigger phrase... for better or worse.
  • Vomit Indiscretion Shot: Peter throws up three times into a garbage bin once he and Lois get back home over having oral sex with Babs.
  • Wham Line:
Lois: I feel so sorry for Mommy.
Carter: Don't worry about your mother. She's got her celebrity news programs keeping her company.
  • Your Television Hates You: During the long, awkward car ride home after Peter unwittingly committed incest, he tries to turn on the radio to lighten the mood, only for "Eat It" by "Weird Al" Yankovic to come on. Peter then hastily turns the radio back off.
