Basic Trope: Fighting styles reveal personalities and training.

  • Straight: The Elite Four of Billy's Brawling Gym have distinctive styles that suit their personality — Alicia Palencia Navarro is a Fragile Speedster that relies on taunts, subsequent Counterattacking, and vicious Speed Blitzes consisting of Rapid-Fire Fisticuffs, which shows that she's a fast, flighty, and irritating pest to catch, Ulysses Smalls is a Close-Range Combatant that relies on getting up in his opponent's face and overwhelming them with savage barrages of blows while dodging and weaving his way through his opponents' blows unscathed, even when his opponent manages to last well into the later parts of the rounds (in which case Ulysses takes Victory by Endurance), which shows that he's a bonafide Determinator who will not stop until his opponent falls down, Flash Young is The Berserker who relies on savage brute force (that's so powerful that it doesn't even matter if you block, because his fist will inevitably bust through your arms), unpredictable movements, an ominous presence in the ring, nigh combat sadomasochism where he looks like he intentionally takes hits to show off his undying fury, and an overall devastating raw force output, which shows that he's The Big Guy and a horrific, unpredictable monster who you absolutely do not want to mess with if you value your life, and Clay Tanner Finnigan tends to use a mix of all three depending on the situation, if not outright doing some Power Copying, while mostly dodging his opponent's attacks instead of blocking or tanking (unless his opponent has pillows for fists) all with a smile, which shows that he fights for the thrill of it and tries to use the most to his ability to have some fun fighting.
  • Exaggerated:
    • On top of all of those, the other three gym members who attend Billy's Brawling Gym have fighting styles that reflect their personalities. Harry Oswalt is a Combat Pragmatist who tends to go for few round speed blitzes, often rushing at his opponent and not letting them breathe for a second, always trying to finish early, and gassing out in the later rounds of his fights, which shows that Harry isn't the kind of guy who wants to run marathons on his opponent, and prefers to finish his fights quickly so that he can laze around once he's done, Eddie Roque is The Fighting Narcissist who relies on gratuitous flynning (of the fisticuffs variety) and comically humiliating his opponents with the most bizarre of moves, which shows that while he may be a Fighting Clown to some (due to his ridiculous Confusion Fu), he's definitely got rights to be arrogant, and Pete Perkins is a Pint-Sized Powerhouse that relies on his relatively short height in order to slip through his opponent's punches and deliver devastating counter barrages and slowly whittle them down until Pete is dead certain that he should go for the finishing blows, which shows that Pete is methodical and patient, always trying to get through to his opponent's defenses and destroy them once he's gotten past them.
    • And even more examples comes from their rivals — Adelita Diaz, Alicia's rival, is a Lightning Bruiser, being The Berserker much like Flash while also beingl a Close-Range Combatant much like Ulysses, often going for relentless pressuring, devastating megaton punches, and borderline combat sadomasochism, which shows that she's got a Hair-Trigger Temper, and once she gets going, she is not stopping, Arnold von Mikrov, Ulysses' rival (and also Big Brother) is a Long-Range Fighter who tends to stay out of harm's way and let his opponent come to him, forcing the opponent to charge forth, more often than not, right into Arnold's fist, which shows that he's an arrogant counterpuncher who relies on getting the opponent to come to him in order for him to land devastating blows, Cole Ramone, Clay's rival, is an Attack Reflector that takes what you give to him and dishes it out back with just as much devastating effect as you threw at him, which shows that he is the perfect foil for a Power Copier like Clay, and Maximilian Khan (real name Maximilian Kartashyovinsky), Flash's rival, is a Mighty Glacier who uses calm, calculated, and precise attacks to dismantle his opponent in the most painful ways possible, always keeping a cool head on his shoulders, and never wavering for even a second, which shows that he's a Genius Bruiser who always has a back-up plan, no matter how dire the situation may be, perfectly befitting the machine against Flash's monster.
  • Downplayed: While the boxers have fighting styles that fit their personality, there is sometimes an Out-of-Character Moment, such as Alicia going for a vicious slugfest, Harry sticking and moving to get a decision win, Flash out-boxing and jabbing away at his opponent, etc.
  • Justified: The trainers of the boxers have used their personalities in order to mold their fighting styles.
  • Inverted: (Continued from exaggerated) Conversely, some rivals may actually have something akin to a Power Stereotype Flip but for fighting styles instead. James Roberts, Harry's rival, is a Glass Cannon who often uses Megaton Punches in tandem with Speed Blitzes in order to viciously wail on his opponents, which heavily contrasts with his easygoing, casual and hospitable demeanor, Stan Roswell Jr., Eddie's is a Jack of All Stats who relies on the very basics and fundamentals of boxing, which heavily contrasts with his bizarre and erratic personality, and Sean Lee, Pete's rival, is a Bruce Lee Clone who relies on Rapid-Fire Fisticuffs and striking at pressure points (his Signature Move is an Attack on the Heart), which heavily contrasts his relaxed, almost perpetually meditating, and calm behavior.

  • Zig-Zagged: Whether fighting styles reflect personalities or not is Depending on the Writer.
  • Averted: Fighting styles do not reflect personalities.
  • Enforced: ???
  • Lampshaded: Flash snarks, "'Course I'm a rough an' tumble slugger who relies on brute force. Can't'cha tell by how freakishly big I am?"
  • Invoked: ???
  • Exploited: Already from knowing one's personality, Maximilian Khan is capable of deducing how they fight, and further deducing how to dismantle their fighting style. Arnold von Mikrov is a long ranged counterpuncher? Bait out his counters and counter him in turn. Clay T. Finnigan is a power copier who takes what's best for the situation? Be an Attack Reflector who knows the counter to every punch Clay tries to throw. Harry Oswalt is a round-one knockout artist? Keep frustrating him by always staying out of reach, outlast him well into the later rounds, and then start beating him down when he's tired. Eddie Roque is an unpredictable fighter? Beat him down using the fundamentals of basics.
