  • In Ashes of the Past, Ash gets training from Sir Aaron in his Aura. If he's not kicking ass with his bare hands, he's using Pokémon attacks, throwing Aura Spheres, or using his Aura-imbued staff or sword.
  • Child of the Storm has Harry develop into this in the sequel; while he's initially a Squishy Wizard of the Unskilled, but Strong variety (with Psychic Powers and magical abilities), he ends up Talented, but Trained and is trained to become both a Kung-Fu Wizard by the likes of Natasha and the Winter Soldier, and to wield a sword by Fandral, the joint-greatest Master Swordsman in the Nine Realms with later tips from the person who taught him, the Lady Knight. By Book III, he's exceptionally skilled with a blade (though the really high-end sword-fighters leave him in the dust) and has an extremely sharp learning curve, with the Lady Knight - who would know - remarking that a) even without his powers he has all the physical and mental advantages of a natural swordsman, b) he's at least as talented as none other than Arthur Pendragon.
  • The dwarven noble protagonist in Dragon Age: The Crown of Thorns harbors a tear in the Veil that enables him to become a Barrier Warrior and use Razor Wind sword attacks, plus augment his physical abilities (though it takes an active effort). Unfortunately, it also comes with a wild magic effect that makes healing spells mostly useless on him and can cause spells to have unpredictable effects. Friendly fire included.
  • In A Growing Affection, Naruto and to a lesser degree Hinata become this trope, balancing melee attacks with medium to long range jutsu.
  • As of chapter 2 part 2 of SlifofinaDragon's Sengoku Basara fanfic Let's Endless Party!, Date Masamune and Sanada Yukimura's son Masa becomes a Japanese Warring States example when he gains some of Oichi's ghostly black hands.
  • In Lord of the Castle, Alucard is this as in canon, being skilled in both swordplay and various magics, including inheriting his father's iconic Hellfire spell, and becomes the Justice League's main magic user.
  • In Mass Effect: Human Revolution, Aleph and Johann Ramsus are both Master Swordsmen and very powerful biotics.
  • My Brave Pony: Starfleet Magic:
  • In New Game, New life the protagonist, Hiroshi, fights using a combination of martial arts and magic. Unlike most other examples he doesn't do things halfway, being both a dedicated student in martial arts and diligent in his magical studies.
  • The RWBY/The Hobbit/The Lord of the Rings Fusion Fic Rise of a Star Knight and its sequel, Knights of Remnant: The Ring of Darkness, have the four Star Knights, the Spear Counterparts to the Maidens. The power is passed from father to eldest surviving son (or brother to brother, in some cases), and each one is tied to one of the four Kingdoms, with Jaune being the Star Knight of Vale. The others are Boromir Numenor of Atlas, John Smith of Vacuo, and Éomer Nikos of Mistral (Pyrrha's cousin).
  • Sword and Claw has both of the protagonists be this, though in slightly different ways: Adam is mainly a melee fighter who also uses support magic (similar to a Paladin), while Lilith is mainly a mage (specializing in elemental and mental magic) who can also fight in melee.
  • Spectra from Vow of Nudity is a bladelock, meaning she specializes in summoning magic weapons from thin air to defend herself in combat. She can also hex her opponents to deal extra damage with her weapons and cast mage armor at will to tank hits despite her nudity.
  • Warriors of the World has the crusaders of the Holy Order of Juno. Oh, and Argath Iruvedla.
  • In Wizard Runemaster besides Death Knights, both Harry Potter and Onyxia are extremely skilled at both magical and melee combat. Though while Harry easily and often switches between the two, Onyxia prefers Good Old Fisticuffs despite being an extremely powerful sorceress. To be fair, if she faces something that she can't rip apart with her bare hands, she can turn back into a dragon and incinerate it.
  • Zero no Tsukaima: Saito the Onmyoji gives Saito great magical ability. Combine this with his Gandálfr powers, and you have a true force to be reckoned with.
