Fanfic / Tales of My Lantera Academia: Emerald Dawn

Go To

One bad day is what led Izuku to become All Might's successor after a show of courage. Here, however, instead of being the inheritor of One For All, he is holding a strange device that seemed insignificant: A single ring. But one sentence led Izuku to be the greatest hero society ever saw.

Tales of My Lantern Academia: Emerald Dawn is a crossover between My Hero Academia and Green Lantern, made by M313note . Shortly after Izuku has his dreams crushed, he sees a strange craft crash and when arriving, finding a dead alien and a single ring the alien gifted him. He was soon incorporated into the Green Lantern Corps due to his willpower.

The fic can be found here.

Tales of My Lantern Academia: Emerald Dawn contains examples of:

  • Adaptational Badass:
    • Thanks to Izuku's notes on her Quirk, Momo is able to replicate not only items, but also people's Quirks such as Midnight's sleeping gas and Bakugou's explosive sweat.
    • The Anti-All Might Nomu was already badass, but the Adaptive Ability the League of Villains added to it after it survived the USJ attack seemingly is building it up to become a stand-in for Doomsday.
  • Adaptational Early Appearance: Overhaul and Eri show up during Izuku's internship when they show up after All Might's retirement.
  • Adaptational Superpower Change: Instead of One for All, Izuku has a Green Lantern Ring, allowing him to make constructs of anything with his mind: From clothes to even other heroes like All Might, Mt. Lady, Burnin' and Endeavor.
  • Ascended Extra:
    • The Anti-All Might Nomu escapes its canonical capture due to Kurogiri warping it away with him and Shigaraki.
    • Momo is a more recurring character and also Izuku's love interest.
    • During the Hosu Arc, Ibara has a more active role due to taking an internship with Kamui Woods alongside Momo.
  • Bait-and-Switch:
    • During the Sports Festival, Momo makes a gauntlet similar to Bakugou's, causing Midnight to panic and tell her to not use it. However, Momo pulls the pin and instead of an explosion, sleeping gas comes out of it and knocks Bakugou out like a light.
    • During his and Momo’s finals match against Eraserhead, Izuku attacks Eraserhead by creating a construct of himself to throw Eraserhead off. This would be a valid tactic, if Izuku’s power came from a Quirk, as Erasure would only work if Eraserhead can use it on Izuku’s actual body. However, its real purpose is to keep Eraserhead from actually trying to use Erasure on Izuku, so that Eraserhead won’t realize that Erasure has no effect, and that Izuku’s power is not actually a Quirk.
  • Bullying a Dragon: Aizawa pits both Momo and Izuku against him in the hopes he can teach them a lesson. This is despite the fact the two have bested a Nomu capable of fighting All Might multiple times. He ends up with the fastest defeat time in UA’s history.
  • Child Soldiers: Downplayed; Izuku is recruited into the Green Lantern Corps as a Junior Recruit due to his age, so while he's given training and missions, it's somewhat restricted compared to what adult Lanterns face.
  • Crippling Overspecialization: As Nemuri points out, Aizawa constantly over-relies on his quirk against D-rank villains, who often panic when they lose their Quirk. Against a smarter foe like Shigaraki or a bioweapon like the Anti-All Might Nomu, it could easily spell his death or a crippling injury.
  • Death by Adaptation:
  • Didn't Think This Through: As Nighteye explains to David, All Might may be well-meaning, but sometimes leaving key details like the full details of One for All would've done more harm than good for someone like him. Given how Two Heroes went, Nighteye isn't wrong.
  • Disney Owns This Trope: Mt. Lady is outraged by Izuku's use of her likeness for his giant constructs without permission from her or her agency and openly yells about wanting to sue during the Sports Festival. However, this never goes anywhere, nor does she ever confront Izuku himself about it; after the Festival, Mt. Lady's agency receives a ton of positive feedback from fans, who wants merchandise with her "green" design, so rather than getting lawyers involved, she decides to not look a gift horse in the mouth. She even has Mineta give Izuku one of the green statuettes as a gift and a token of apology for the Sludge Villain incident.
  • Dramatically Missing the Point: Shigaraki reaches the assumption that he needs to turn the League of Villains into The Dreaded by killing all heroes when he interrogates Todoroki at the mall... well, more like Shigaraki ranting a lot and Todoroki being utterly apathetic about the whole thing.
  • Empowered Badass Normal: Izuku Midoriya wielding the Green Lantern Ring, the most powerful weapon in the universe, natch.
  • Entertainingly Wrong: For the finals, Aizawa believes that he’s facing down two arrogant brats, who are overly reliant on their Quirks, and will fold the very second they go up against his Erasure. However, everyone else, both the readers and the rest of the cast, realize that he’s actually up against two of the smartest, most versatile and adaptable members of the class, and fully expect him to lose hard…which he does.
  • Epic Fail: Eraserhead believes that he'll be able to teach Izuku and Momo humility by pairing them up against him. Instead, he is the teacher who loses the fastest, with Recovery Girl telling Izuku and Momo they actually broke the record for the fastest final exam completion.
  • Everybody Has Standards: Both Kaminari and Mineta initially help Bakugou with cleaning the dishes due to Jiro needling him into breaking the dishes, but they quickly nope out when it becomes clear that Bakugou is utterly toxic to work with.
  • Evil Learns of Outside Context: More "mean" than "evil", but regardless Bakugou discovers that Izuku is using some kind of gadget (but does not know specifically what yet) for his "Quirk" during the Sport Festival and becomes obsessed with revealing it to the world so he can humiliate Izuku. Thanks to Mei, he also manages to figure out one of the Green Lantern Ring's greatest weaknesses — that the wielder must maintain concentration when using it — and aims to exploit it when he faces off against Izuku.
  • Fatal Flaw:
    • For Bakugou and Todoroki, their refusal to cooperate or put their pride aside costs them immensely during the Final Exam, causing them to fail against All Might. Todoroki gets a second strike against him when he encounters Shigaraki and decides to not tell anybody else because 1) he thinks the police already knows anything they need to know about Shigaraki (so they would not care about hearing that he has decided to escalate) and 2) he does not wants to hear Endeavor’s inevitable "why you didn’t used your fire?" talk.
    • Aizawa is slowly becoming obsessed with making Izuku and Momo fail thinking it would be A Lesson in Defeat.
  • Feeling Oppressed by Their Existence: Bakugou really, really hates how Izuku has become the class hero with his awesome new Quirk and when he accidentally overhears Izuku recharge the Green Lantern Ring during the Sports Festival, he becomes utterly obsessed with discovering what device gives Deku his false Quirk, reveal it to the world and smash it to put Deku back in his place.
  • Happily Adopted: Eri is taken in by the Midoriyas.
  • How the Mighty Have Fallen: Bakugou had expected to get into UA, being the top dog and having no Deku get in his way. Instead, he is forced to see Izuku outshine him at every turn. Not only that, but Izuku is training Momo into becoming an expert combatant with her Quirk. Then, he is knocked out in the quarterfinals of the Sports Festival via a Bait-and-Switch gambit, forcing him to get an internship with a hero in the top 500s. Then, to top it all off, his refusal to cooperate with a similarly uncooperative partner and try to sate his ego ends with both him and Todoroki failing their finals.
  • In Spite of a Nail: Despite several derailments, some events still play the same.
    • Bakugou still uses his gauntlets despite All Might telling him to stand down. Instead of Izuku on the receiving end, it's Momo.
    • The USJ attack still happens like canon, but the way it ends is different.
    • Despite Izuku and Shoto switching places and opponents in the final match, Bakugou still lets his pride and ego override him to where he refuses to cooperate with Shoto. In contrast, where Izuku and Momo pass against Aizawa, Bakugou and Shoto fail due to their inability to cooperate, as well as attacking each other in the end before All Might knocks them out.
    • Kirishima and Sato fail their final exam despite changing tactics. This is due to Kirishima collapsing into a fit of anger and trying to attack with force.
    • Bakugou still goes to I-Island, but as a server and not a champion in the tournament.
  • Irony: Aizawa thought that both Momo and Izuku needed a reality check, but as Present Mic and Midnight point out, the one who really needed the reality check was him.
  • Jerkass: Aizawa, all over.
  • Let No Crisis Go to Waste: Shigaraki and All for One uses Stain's death to gain several followers by launching an attack at Hosu with Nomus.
  • Never My Fault: Aizawa refuses to learn anything from his disastrous defeat at the hands of Izuku and Momo. Present Mic says he hopes Aizawa learns something from this, even if he never says it aloud.
  • No Sympathy: Just like in canon, Aizawa does not gives a damn about Bakugou unleashing potentially lethal force during combat training, other than a growled "don't do it again" to Bakugou and sneering to All Might about being alarmist when he protests about Aizawa being so laissez-faire about it.
  • Now You Tell Me: Aizawa wasn't happy Midnight and Present Mic didn't tell him he would lose hard. However, while part of that was to pop Aizawa's ego a bit, the other reason was because they knew Bakugou would never cooperate with Izuku or Momo (and given how Bakugou tried to kill Momo, the result would've been predictably painful), while Todoroki was a hit-or-miss scenario.
  • Outside-Context Problem: A Green Lantern Ring and everything related to it (such as the existence of aliens) is completely beyond the scope of the other characters to figure out and comprehend (at least for now). The only enemies that can cause any problem to Izuku (aside from the occasional rookie mistake) are those who would make All Might break a sweat. Even the people who figure out the truth about Izuku (such as Bakugou) can only think of the Green Lantern Ring in terms of "impossibly advanced super-secret Support Gear made by some smart engineer", which while fitting what it is in Exact Words does not covers the fact that it's of alien origin. In a more humorous example, Eraserhead decides to face off against Izuku in the Final Exams, thinking that his Erasure Quirk will shut down Izuku's and knock some humility into him. The fact that it does not shuts down the Green Lantern Ring (and Izuku going a bit trigger-happy with his constructs) knocks the crap out of him. In fact, for the finals, Izuku’s greater concern is keeping Eraserhead from realizing that his Quirk has no effect. With Momo’s advice, he creates a construct of himself to serve as a decoy.
  • Point of Divergence: A lot of divergence points.
    • Izuku's training regiment in canon is cleaning a beach for ten months overseen by All Might. Here, he is given extensive training by Mogo and Kilowag on Oa.
    • During the battle trials, Izuku is paired up with Asui against Todoroki and Shoji. Todoroki's attempts to brute force his way to victory failed due to Izuku's usage of the Green Lantern ring to make warm clothes for Asui and create a copy of Endeavor, defeating the dual-haired teen and his partner.
    • Momo and Ojiro are paired up against Bakugou and Iida. When Bakugou's attempts to use his gauntlet nearly hits Momo, All Might calls off the battle trial and fails Bakugou's team for using lethal force.
    • The USJ ends with Shigaraki and Kurogiri fleeing with the Anti-All Might Nomu due to it facing a Green Lantern construction of All Might with Midnight's sleeping gas inside it.
    • The Sports Festival plays out very differently, with Bakugou knocked out by Momo in the quarterfinals and both Izuku and Momo taking first and second place, respectively.
    • Due to Stain's death, Ingenium is not crippled and never even encounters the Hero Killer.
    • Momo and Izuku end up with far more internship offers than canon, due to Momo's slow reaction and Izuku's tendency to break his bones to dust and cause permanent damage to his right arm. Momo goes with Kamui Woods alongside Ibara, while Izuku goes with Majestic for his internships.
    • The Hosu arc is mainly Nomus due to Stain's death. The Anti-All Might Nomu has a lot more tricks given to it by All for One and Garaki, ending with Izuku hurling it into deep space with missile constructs.
    • The Overhaul arc ends before it can properly begin, with Eri running into Izuku and Izuku using his construct hand to detain Overhaul and get him arrested far earlier than canon.
    • The Final Exams are done differently, with Izuku paired up with Momo against Aizawa and Shoto paired up with Bakugou against All Might. The former prove very formidable and combative against Aizawa, successfully defeating him and passing the exam. In contrast, Bakugou's pride and Shoto's refusal to use his fire side, as well as their refusal to work together, ends with them failing their final exam against All Might.
    • Kaminari and Ashido pass their exam by pouring acid on steel and electrocuting it, frying Nezu to unconsciousness.
    • Shigaraki interrogates Shoto, trying to figure out why the public fears Stain and comes to a conclusion that they need to fear him. Shoto doesn't call the cops because he knew Endeavor would try to suggest a ludicrous manner to use his fire, even though he's in a civilian area.
    • The main plot of Two Heroes is completely derailed with Nighteye, Star and Stripe and All Might removing Wolfram's group and arresting Abraham, while also covering up David's involvement in the plan.
  • The Power of Apathy: Shigaraki interrogates Shoto at the mall and reaches his decision of escalating the activities of the League of Villains to kill all Heroes and being fear to the civilians, mostly through rambling to himself and Shoto being apathetic about being held approached by a guy threatening to kill him and anybody he can get his hands on if Shoto makes any sudden moves.
  • Psychological Projection: Aizawa firmly believes that Izuku and Momo are arrogant fools, who are overly reliant on their Quirks, who need to be brought down several pegs. However, when the fight begins, Aizawa is the one thrown off when his Quirk fails to affect Izuku (who is using his ring to create a projection to hide the fact that Erasure wouldn’t work on him anyway), and winds up being taken down due to his own reliance on his Quirk, and the constant arrogant assumptions he makes about his opponents.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: According to Nighteye's sidekicks, the only one confirmed to have left the Shie Hassaikai is Kendo Rappa, with the rest either being rumors or heresay.
  • Secret Chaser: Bakugou becomes obsessed with figuring out how that ring works, so that he could reveal it to the world, put Deku in his place and then destroy it. Putting aside the fact that the rings are extremely durable, even if Bakugou does succeed in this endeavor, it’s likely the Green Lantern Corps will be very angry with Bakugou, as regardless of if he wants to be a hero or not, he sabotaged an intergalactic cop's job.
  • Secret-Keeper: Inko, All Might, and Momo are the only ones fully aware of the true nature of Izuku’s “Quirk” and his work as a Green Lantern.
  • Shout-Out: Izuku's use of humanoid constructs seems to be one for Kyle Rayner, a former graphic designer who drew inspiration from comics, anime and cartoons for his constructs, in contrast to the simpler, more pragmatic constructs of his predecessors.
  • Spared by the Adaptation: Tensei is not crippled from Stain, due to his sidekicks finding his corpse.
  • The Stations of the Canon: Two major derails so far:
    • The murder of Stain during the Sports Festival derails almost everything related to the Hero Killer Arc.
    • Shortly after Izuku captures Overhaul in his first patrol as an apprentice Hero and rescues Eri, the Shie Hassaikai is noted by some Heroes to have gone in complete panic mode, unknown to the Heroes because they just got completely screwed out of their plan to develop Anti-Quirk bullets.
  • Trauma Button: After ten years of relentless bullying, Bakugou has become a living example of this trope to Izuku, and the subsequent weakening of Izuku's Lantern constructs is one of the biggest advantages Bakugou has against Izuku in a direct confrontation (not that Bakugou knows about this).
  • Underestimating Badassery: Ashido and Kaminari really don't understand what they're up against when they're paired against Principal Nezu during the Final Exam, assuming that physically taking down the tiny, furred humanoid would be easy. That said, Nezu himself ends up being a bit overconfident...
    • Likewise, Aizawa does this to Izuku and Momo, believing that he, an underground pro hero, would be able to best two first year students. As Kaminari, Ashido and even Mineta point out, they were guaranteed an automatic win as the two are impossible to beat in both brain and brawn. Aizawa's refusal to accept it ends with the quickest defeat time in UA history.
  • "The Villain Knows" Moment: "Villain" may be too harsh, but nevertheless Bakugou makes no secret to Izuku that he overheard Izuku recharging the Green Lantern ring during the Sports Festival and swears he will get proof that that the "support gear" exists so he can reveal it to the world and show everybody that Izuku is still a worthless Deku.
  • Wake Up, Go to School & Save the World: Amusingly, despite attending school in order to become a hero, Izuku is already an active member of the Green Lantern Corps and occasionally has to go off-world on assignment. Thankfully, he hasn’t had too many such assignments yet, so there hasn’t been any serious interference in his school life.
  • We Would Have Told You, But...: Both Nemuri and Yamada didn't tell Aizawa he was biting off more than he can chew under the basis he could have his bubble popped and he learned to be more humble. They don't know if he'll come to accept it or double down on his beliefs, but they knew one thing. If he did accept it, he would never admit it to them.
  • Wham Episode: Chapter 28, which ends with Stain's death at the hands of a figure heavily implied to be William Hand.
  • X-Ray Sparks: Nezu chooses a very poor moment to pour himself some tea inside the wrecking ball he's controlling during the exam, leading to him getting hit with Kaminari's lightning, showing off his skeleton to the observing teachers.
