Stones in the Snow is a Game of Thrones fanfic where Sansa has a child by Tyrion Lannister.

Now in the process of extensive rewrites, now called "Dreams of Winter".

Tropes that appear in this fanfic:

  • Arranged Marriage: Sansa arranges a marriage between Beren Tallhart and Alys Karstark.
  • Better the Devil You Know: Why Sansa has sex with Tyrion. Otherwise, Tywin was going to have another Lannister cousin rape her.
  • Better to Die than Be Killed: Sansa plans to kill herself if Ramsay captures her.
  • Boomerang Bigot: Shireen wonders if Robert drank because he was part Targaryen and being part Targaryen meant hating a part of himself as well.
  • The Bus Came Back: The most recent chapter has Arya arriving at Winterfell.
  • Canon Foreigner: Maester Pylos appears in the Dragonstone chapters, while Daryn Hornwood is mentioned in Chapter 10. Asher Forrester is mentioned in Chapter 11.
  • Cut His Heart Out with a Spoon: Jon threatens to hang a man by his toes for insulting Sansa.
  • Death by Adaptation: Littlefinger dies earlier than in the TV series since Sansa trades information on Littlefinger to Jaime for the Blackfish’s passage and the Knights of the Vale.
  • Evil Counterpart: Ramsay has the gall to set himself up as one to Eddard Stark, as a Lord of Winterfell allowing a bastard to live as part of his household.
  • Good Girls Avoid Abortion: Averted; Sansa wanted to abort her child with Tyrion, but Littlefinger didn’t let her anywhere near moon tea.
  • Half the Man He Used to Be: Shireen’s bodyguard is ripped in half by Viserion.
  • History Repeats: Robert's idea of combining the houses of Stark and Baratheon comes up again with Jon's attraction to Shireen.
  • I Have Your Wife: In this case for Jon, I have your half-brother and your niece.
  • Internal Reveal:
    • Rickon tells Jon and Sansa that Bran, Meera and Jojen went beyond the Wall
    • Jon reveals Jolene's existence in Chapter 19.
  • King Incognito: When Brienne meets with Jaime, Sansa disguises herself as a servant girl pouring drinks.
  • Last of His Kind: Shireen is the last trueborn Baratheon.
  • Law of Inverse Fertility: Averted; the premise is that it only takes one or two tries to conceive a child.
  • Mama Bear: Sansa.
  • Named by the Adaptation: Edmure and Roslin’s son is named Jared.
  • "Not So Different" Remark:
    • Just like Dorne, the North decides not to have a king. Sansa comments on it:
Sansa [thinking] Sansa felt nothing good came to those with a King or Queen in front of their name. Perhaps the Dornish had it right. They were never simply lords or ladies, but viewed themselves still as royalty, the liege lord of Dorne being Prince Doran Martell and they had survived very well in these long years and seemed to remain so. Like Dorne, before the Seven Kingdoms, before the Iron Throne, there was Winterfell. At Joffrey’s wedding, Prince Oberyn had spoken to her very briefly and mentioned that he thought the North and Dorne were more alike than either could imagine despite how polar opposite they appeared on the surface.
    • Jon gives one of these speeches to Daenerys regarding Sansa.
”Then you’ll be ruling over a graveyard. And I’m sorry, for what you suffered but you are not the only woman who has been chained, betrayed, raped and defiled. My sister, Sansa, trusted Tyrion’s nephew, loved him. He promised her he would spare our father and he betrayed her and cut off his head. She was trapped, beaten and humiliated by her own betrothed and when it didn't suit their purposes to marry her to Joffrey she was given like a broodmare to him. For her claim to Winterfell and to give Tywin Lannister an heir to Casterly Rock! She was threatened by Tywin if she didn’t lay with him and consummate their marriage he would have her husbands cousins rape her until her belly had a son in it. Then when my sister finally thought she was free, she had to birth the child of her enemy and raise her in hiding. Then she was betrayed and sold again to a man whose father killed her mother and older brother. Who raped her every night in her own home, in her brother's bed. He defiled and tore apart her body just because he liked to see her bleed and scream. Yet she managed to escape him and find me, rescue our brother and her daughter and take back our home. And just like you, all she had, when she was all alone, was faith in herself. I have never met a woman who has suffered more and stood stronger and taller after it all than her. So excuse me if I don’t bend my knee to you because you suffered. People suffer everyday, it doesn’t make them entitled to ask others to bow to them.“
  • Original Character: Jolene Stone, Sansa’s child by Tyrion.
  • Parental Substitute: Davos for Shireen.
  • Plot Armor: Ramsay Bolton is able to lead a lightning raid on the Eyrie, killing several Knights of the Vale in the process, who are among the best warriors in Westeros, and comes out unscathed with Sansa’s baby daughter.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: Jon gives one to the Northern lords for their lack of support.
Jon: We are here because of my sister. She is the one who wanted to fight for Winterfell, for the North. I saw no chance of winning, I wanted to leave and go south to the Free Cities. Do you know what Sansa told me, when I said we wouldn’t win, that there was no chance of getting our brother back from Ramsey? She told me if I didn’t help her, then she would take back Winterfell herself. And I don’t doubt that she would have. She would have gotten on her horse, she would have gone to every house that was once loyal to the Starks as I did and no matter how many of you might have turned her away she wouldn’t have stopped until she got the army she needed. She didn’t have to leave the North and go to Riverrun. She was safe with me, but she knowingly left that safety to get us a valuable ally that could turn the tides in our favor when we step out onto that battlefield. She does not deserve the slander I’ve heard you speaking behind her back. She is your kings, Robb Starks sister. She is a princess of The North and a good woman, who's braver than most men here. It is because of her that we are here today. It is because of her courage, her sense of duty and loyalty to her family and the North. And the next fool who speaks a word against my sister will find himself hung by his toes.
  • Self-Deprecation: The Blackfish states that he is terrible with names.
  • Ship Tease:
    • Shireen Baratheon and Jon Snow.
    • Sansa Stark and Hoster Blackwood, third-born son of Tytos Blackwood.
  • Shout-Out: While describing Myrcella, Sansa says that Myrcella has more kindness in her little finger than Cersei has in her whole body.
  • Small Role, Big Impact: Tywin Lannister doesn’t appear at all, but threatening Sansa with gang-rape unless she has sex with Tyrion kicks off the plot.
  • Spared by the Adaptation:
    • Shireen Baratheon is kept at Castle Black and is not burned by Melisandre.
    • Brynden “Blackfish” Tully is allowed to leave Riverrun with Sansa. Instead, he is Killed Offscreen in the Battle of the Bastards.
    • Rickon Stark manages to turn slightly and is shot in the leg with an arrow instead of the back.
    • Shaggydog is shown to be still alive.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: Jolene has the classic Lannister looks: Blonde hair and green eyes. Sansa tells Jaime that Jolene resembles Myrcella.
  • Teeth-Clenched Teamwork: Shireen doesn’t really like working with Brienne or Melisandre since their actions led to her father’s death.
  • Wham Shot: Shireen manages to tame Viserion.
  • What Happened to the Mouse?: Since Shireen is still alive, Selyse is nowhere to be found.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Jaime chews out Sansa for leaving Tyrion.
  • Wicked Stepmother: Ramsay is a male example.
  • Xanatos Gambit: Tywin uses one of these to kick off the plot. Either Sansa has sex with Tyrion, or he has a Lannister cousin rape her. Either way, Sansa will (presumably) get pregnant with a Lannister who would be heir to Casterly Rock, and as the last known Stark, a claim to Winterfell.
  • You Are in Command Now: Shireen, as Renly Baratheon’s only remaining legitimate relative, is the Lady Paramount of the Stormlands.
  • You Remind Me of X: The Blackfish notes that Sansa reminds him of Catelyn.

Tropes that appear in the rewrite, now called Dreams of Winter:

  • Adaptation Expansion: Chapters 1-9 expand on Chapter 1 of the original.
  • Dead Guy Junior:
    • Sansa names one of her daughters Shaela, for her maid (and Tyrion's mistress) Shae.
    • Tommen and Margaery plan to name their child Myrcella if it's a girl.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: The Blackfish dies saving Rickon and Shaela
  • Hope Spot: Chapter 14. Tommen decides to try and mend the realm with Margaery's help by pardoning Shireen and the Starks and sending Jaime to investigate the claims about the Army of the Dead. Then the Green Trial happens.
  • Kick the Dog: Joffrey gives insults to Sansa about her pregnancy, hoping she'd die in childbirth like Joanna did with Tyrion, then volunteering to "avenge" her by smashing the baby's head against a wall and comparing it to the Mountain doing the same with Rhaegar's son Aegon.
  • Outliving One's Offspring: Tommen's unborn child with Margaery perishes with her in the Green Trial.
  • Pet the Dog: Oberyn Martell shows sympathy for Sansa at the Purple Wedding.
“Nor do we believe in killing men and their mothers at weddings.”
  • Ship Tease: Sansa and Sigorn, the new Magnar of the Thenns.
