Go To

Bearer of Infinity is a Marvel Universe AU story in which Kamala gets the Infinity Gauntlet by accident during a battle against Thanos in the heart of New York, and finds that it won't come off.

  • Accidental Truth: When inciting his congregation against Kamala, Reverend William Stryker claims that she's a mutant. While Kamala's powers come from the Inhuman gene, she also has the X-Gene, if inactive. Word of God even confirms both that he fully believes it and that he has no idea that he's actually right.
  • Adaptational Badass: Kamala gets the Infinity Gauntlet as a Clingy MacGuffin, giving her godlike power.
  • A God I Am Not: Despite her incredible power with the Gauntlet, Kamala doesn't really view herself as a goddess, denying it whenever people call her such and trying, unsuccessfully, to get the Mindful Ones to stop treating her as such.
  • Balancing Death's Books: Eternals can return from death, but at the cost of a random mortal somewhere on the planet dying in exchange.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: Kamala is a kind person and dedicated young heroine, but hurt her family and friends and you'll get a beating. Hood learns that the hard way. She later chews out Eternity for his dismissive attitude towards humanity after he goes a step too far and insults her family and their faith. Later, she's infuriated when she learns that a random mortal dies whenever an Eternal revives.
  • Big Applesauce: Mentally lampshaded by Kamala in the first chapter, wondering why Thanos, and so man others, keep coming to New York City specifically, wondering if there's some kind of rule she doesn't know about.
  • Broken Pedestal: Kamala is devastated to learn that the resurrections of the Eternals cost the life of a random mortal somewhere on Earth, since the Eternals are supposed to be heroes, with Sersi having been an Avenger at one point and Sprite and Ikaris having both fought to protect humanity.
  • Bullying a Dragon: Hood tries to force Kamala to give him the Infinity Gauntlet by holding her family hostage. Even discounting the Clingy MacGuffin nature of the Gauntlet this time around, he's still trying to threaten someone who's a Reality Warper, and once she reflexively uses her abilities to rescue her nephew Malik, remembering her new powers through the panic, she promptly turns the guns and ropes to dust, and hits Hood with a Megaton Punch to the face which sends him flying. Uatu, watching as he usually does, even notes that he's lucky that Kamala didn't want to kill him, or otherwise she could have destroyed his very soul with that punch.
  • Clingy MacGuffin: Once the Infinity Gauntlet ends up on her hand by mistake, Kamala soon finds that she can't get it off, and everything that Stark and Reed Richards try to remove it just triggers a defensive reaction, increasing in severity the more they try. The best she can do is make it invisible.
  • Dark Secret: The great secret and shame of the Eternals is that their Resurrective Immortality works by means of Balancing Death's Books; whenever an Eternal returns from death, a random mortal, somewhere on Earth, dies. Ajak attacks Kamala in paranoia that the Gauntlet will reveal this secret to her, which only happens BECAUSE of said assault.
  • Didn't Think This Through: When Kamala gave the Mindless Ones minds of their own, she never considered that they might start worshipping her for it, so she never asked them not to. Strange also doesn't think to inform the Avengers about the event.
  • Did You Just Flip Off Cthulhu?: When Eternity insults the people of Earth, Kamala is clearly annoyed but doing her best to keep her composure. When he insults her family specifically, saying that they cling to a faith that means nothing, Kamala shouts out that he is the one who is "nothing", making all the cosmic entities there reel backwards in shock.
  • Forgot About His Powers: Kamala, being new to the Gauntlet and still figuring out how to use its power, occasionally forgets about said powers. For instance, when Hood is threatening her family in a bid to get the Gauntlet himself, Kamala's panic makes her forget that she can just use said Gauntlet to save them until she reflexively teleports her baby nephew to her when Hood is going after him specifically, and later she forgets that she can just teleport her phone to her instead of using someone else's.
  • Gambit Pileup: Mephisto, Eternity, Doom and Namor are all making ploys to steal the power of Infinity from Kamala after her trial, and Doom believes that others like the mutants and Inhumans are not far behind.
  • Healing Hands: The Gauntlet's powers easily let Kamala heal people, like curing Blackwood's insanity or fixing the Rapid Aging issues of Selby/Starbrand. The Avengers are trying to keep people from pestering her about healing, since they're afraid that Kamala will burn herself out trying to heal everyone she can if she has the chance.
  • How Do I Shot Web?: Kamala, naturally, has a bit of a learning curve figuring out how to handle the Gauntlet's powers. For instance, when facing the Wrecking Crew she accidentally turns them into snowmen, Pokémon statues, and finally hedge animals before reverting them to normal.
  • Humans Are Flawed: Kamala all but name-drops the trope during her trial after Eternity disses humans one too many times by insulting her family and saying that their faith means nothing, pointing out that despite their flaws, the heroes of Earth still help people, saying that he is the one who's who's "nothing".
  • I'm Standing Right Here: When Abigail Brand makes a comment about how it was bad enough when Carol was "running around like an idiot" in response to Kamala stopping conflicts across the galaxy, Carol points out that she can hear her.
  • I Need a Freaking Drink: Subverted, Steve is worried that Tony is worried that Tony is going to go for some alcohol after Kamala's cosmic trial, but he just indulges on whipped cream instead.
  • Ironic Echo Cut: When Sprite gets in-between an enraged Kamala and Ikaris, the latter wonders what Sprite is thinking. Cut to Sprite wondering what she's thinking herself.
  • Megaton Punch: Kamala seems to be developing a fondness for Infinity-enhanced punches.
    • When Hood threatens her family, she punches him hard enough to reduce his face to a smoking ruin and blast him through the wall and across the street. A watching Uatu even notes that Kamala could have destroyed his soul with that punch, and that Hood is lucky that Kamala doesn't want to kill.
    • Not long after, she punches Count Nefaria hard enough that the normally Nigh-Invulnerable villain's cheekbones shatter.
  • Morton's Fork: Thor is worried that if Loki keeps pestering Kamala he'll either get her ticked off at him or they'll become friends, and he's not sure which possibility is worse.
  • My Skull Runneth Over: When trying to convince Kamala to give up the Gauntlet, Libra turns on the omniscience that Kamala had been largely keeping off, making Kamala forcibly aware of several alien conflicts which she ricochets around the galaxy stopping in the three hours it takes for her to turn it off again, as it was overwhelming her.
  • Mythology Gag: Thanos's demise, getting turned into a substance that blows away in the wind, seems to references his fate in Avengers: Endgame.
  • Never Heard That One Before: When Kamala reflexively greets Doctor Strange with a "What's up Doc", the latter says that he gets that at least once a week when she apologizes.
  • No Good Deed Goes Unpunished:
    • Kamala heals Blackwood's mind after she breaks his enchanted sword, and unfortunately the news spreads like wildfire, so now Tony and the Avengers have to be careful, because they don't want her to start running herself ragged trying to heal people.
    • When Libra turns on her omniscience, she darts around the galaxy for hours before she can turn it off, stopping conflicts... which gets Abigail Brand on her case when some of those aliens call and complain.
  • Not Helping Your Case: Libra does this multiple times when trying to convince Kamala to give up the Gauntlet. Besides turning on her omniscience, forcibly making her aware of numerous alien conflicts, as part of a point that the idea that a god should be all-good is flawed, he claims that Thanos, the guy who used the Stones to wipe out half the universe, is a better choice to bear the Stones than her because he at least bested the Elders of the Universe to get them, with Kamala finding the idea so insane that she assumes that misheard him at first, making her less and less inclined to listen to his arguments. And then he reveals her canonical death scene saving Mary Jane from being sacrificed, and besides Kamala realizing that it wasn't All for Nothing like he said if Mary Jane and the other people who would have died before the Avengers could have stopped the evil god lived (baffling Libra, who expresses the belief that all mortals value their lives over the lives of others), she can sense that Libra is not telling her the whole story. Then he decides to attack the Earth...
  • Not-So-Omniscient Council of Bickering: As in Marvel canon, the Parliament of Pantheons in Omnipotence City, which devolves into bickering over Kamala getting the Gauntlet by the time Loki and Thor arrive, much to their lack of surprise.
  • Obliviously Evil: William Stryker is firmly convinced that he's good and that he's doing God's will in his anti-mutant crusade, which allows Mephisto to use him as an Unwitting Pawn against Kamala.
  • Oh, Crap!: Val, Reed, Sue, and Ben all react this way when they learn that Kamala has the Mutant gene in addition to her Inhuman genetics.
  • Pass the Popcorn: After Kamala gets fed up with Eternity trash-talking humanity, it's noted that Deadpool is munching on some popcorn he suddenly has.
  • Poke in the Third Eye: When Eternity and the others arrive in the solar system. Doctor Strange is overwhelmed by his arcane senses and Professor X has a Psychic Nosebleed.
  • Poor Communication Kills: Kamala doesn't mention the Mindless Ones she turned into Mindful Ones to the Avengers because she assumed that Strange said something. When they make a city just outside of Jersey, the Avengers are pretty ticked that Strange didn't say anything, allowing the situation to catch them off guard.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: Kamala gives Eternity one after he keeps dissing Earth and humanity, climaxing when he insults her family's faith by calling it "nothing", saying that he's the one that is nothing, having no faith in anything but himself after pointing out that the heroes of Earth do their best to help people despite their flaws.
  • Ridiculously Fast Construction: The Mindful Ones build an entire city just outside of Jersey literally overnight. It's just wood and stone, admittedly, but still impressive.
  • Royal Harem: A few previous Inhuman kings have had multiple brides in order to ensure their bloodlines. After Kamala bonds with the Gauntlet, a good number of the nobles want to have her become Black Bolt's second wife in the hopes that that the power of the Stones will affect her children's power, though both Black Bolt and Medusa are opposed to the idea.
  • Screw This, I'm Out of Here!: In Chapter 26 Strange arrives at Avengers Tower, then immediately leaves once Tony makes a crack about his Poor Communication Kills moment.
  • Secret Test of Character: Part of why The Living Tribunal lets Kamala keep the Gauntlet after her trial is that she was willing to give it up without a fight if she lost. She even references the trope afterward when asked why she didn't get the Tribunal to deal with the Clingy MacGuffin aspect of the Gauntlet.
  • Self-Fulfilling Prophecy: Ajak goes after Kamala because she fears that the Gauntlet might reveal to her the secret of the Eternal's ability to revive after death, but her confrontation only ensures that Kamala wonders what she's talking about when the Gauntlet lets her overhear more level-headed Eternals stopping her and she gets curious, causing the very thing that she was trying to avoid. Sprite even lampshades the trope right before this happens when Ajak is told that Kamala is only a threat now because Kamala made her a threat.
  • Shout-Out:
    • At one point Kamala reflexively greets Doctor Strange by saying "What's up Doc".
    • When Libra explains his connection to Eternity to Kamala, she compares it to a Dungeons & Dragons Cleric or Warlock.
  • Stop Worshipping Me: Kamala didn't expect the Mindful Ones to start worshipping her after she gave them their minds, and tries to get them to stop without much success.
  • Sure, Let's Go with That: When Kamala compares Libra to a Dungeons & Dragons Cleric or Warlock when he explains his connection to Eternity, this is effectively his response.
  • Take a Third Option:
    • When training Kamala to use her powers, Strange takes her to an underground ruin filled with Mindless Ones, intending to teach her how heroes have to somehow make compromises for the greater good. Rather than just leaving them there or letting them loose but allowing them to hurt others though, Kamala uses the Gauntlet to give them minds of their own, and sets things up so that they're not just in ruins.
    • Instead of letting Hyperion take the Gauntlet or leaving him in misery at a world he feels is wrong, Kamala uses the Gauntlet to create a pocket universe for him.
  • Take Our Word for It: When Kamala got the Gauntlet Uatu, sensing that this wasn't the most likely course of events, used his powers to see what would have happened if she hadn't gained the Gauntlet. We don't get any details, but the Watcher greatly prefers the timeline that he's in.
  • Took a Level in Badass: As Kamala gains experience figuring out the Gauntlet, she grows in power to the point of being able to fight heavy-hitters like Hyperion or Ikaris on even ground.
  • Unwitting Pawn:
    • Hood is told by Mephisto who Kamala is so he'll go after her as a distraction for Mephisto's own plots to gain the power of Infinity, which include taking advantage of Eternity and any other cosmic figures that side with him. He's also used Blackwood as a pawn in the past, which is why Kamala healing his mind annoys him.
    • Stryker is being manipulated by Mephisto into going after Kamala as well.
  • Verbal Backspace: When Strange arrives via portal in Chapter 26, he says "I'm back". When Tony makes a crack about his Poor Communication Kills moment with the Mindful Ones, he promptly turns 180 degrees and vamooses, saying that "I'm gone again".
  • Villain Team-Up: A group of villains, led by The Hood, decide to join forces to try to kill Ms. Marvel and steal the Gauntlet.
  • Wham Episode: Chapter 16 has Val, Sue, Reed and Ben discover that Kamala is a Mutant and an Inhuman, and worry how people will react if/when the news gets out.
