The Trio/Legion of Doom

    Lord Tirek
A centaur hailing from the Midnight Kingdom. In the past Tirek and his brother Scorpan entered Equestria to steal the magic from the ponies for themselves. However Scorpan befriended the ponies and tried to convince his brother to abandon their plans but he refused. Left with no choice Scorpan informed the royal sisters of his plans and Tirek was imprisoned in Tartarus for thousands of years. Tirek would escape from Tartarus but he was defeated by Twilight and her friends and imprisoned once more. After teaming up with Queen Chrysalis and Cozy Glow, Tirek was beaten once again and turned to stone for his crimes. After being freed from his prison Tirek seeks revenge on his brother for his betrayal.
  • Heel–Face Turn: Goes through one after learning his parents are still alive and they still loved him despite everything he has done.
  • Revenge: On his brother Scorpan. He even admits that he doesn't care about taking over Equestria anymore and only wants to get back at his brother for betraying him.
  • Villain Teamup: With Sendak though its only temporary as Tirek plans to betray him.

    Cozy Glow
A pegasus filly who once attended the School of Friendship and attempted to remove all the magic from Equestria. Her plan was foiled and she was sent to Tartarus for her crimes. She would later escape and team up with Tirek and Chrysalis in order to sow distrust among the three pony races. But she and her allies were defeated again and were turned to stone as punishment. Having been freed by unknown means, Cozy Glow seeks to get revenge on Twilight and her loved ones.
  • Easily Forgiven: Princess Twilight grants Cozy Glow an official pardon absolving her of all her crimes after the Sorceress has been defeated. Flurry Heart and her friends also forgive her and don't hold any grudges against her.
  • Given Name Reveal: As it turns out Cozy Glow is not her real name but something she called herself after running away from the orphanage. Cozy's birth name turns out to be Half Note. Melody came up with the name after seeing her daughter trying to sing along whenever Melody sung a lullaby but she only singed in half notes so Melody decided to call her daughter that.
  • Hair-Trigger Temper: It doesn't take a lot to set her off.
  • Heel–Face Turn: Cozy Glow undergoes one after meeting her mother Melody Heartsong and learns she always loved her and never intended to abandon her. She forgives her mother and goes back to using her original name Half Note.
  • Meaningful Name: Cozy Glow began calling herself that due to not knowing her real name and because of the warm feeling she felt after seeing other children playing with their parents.
  • Parental Abandonment: Cozy's real parents threw her into an orphanage and disappeared somewhere. Cozy's mother, Melody Heartsong was young when she gave birth to Cozy and she was unable to raise her properly. She was forced to leave Cozy at an orphanage due to not being able to earn enough money to support the both of them while her father was unable to handle raising a child and left his wife to raise their daughter on her own.
  • Poke the Poodle: The only thing Cozy did to Zecora was remove her ability to rhyme.
  • Revenge: On Celestia, Luna and Discord for turning her to stone.
  • Sanity Slippage: The more she uses the Alicorn Amulet the more of a toll it takes on her mind. By the time she faces Flurry Heart in the climax, she goes into a full blown Villainous Breakdown, culminating in her trying to destroy all of Ponyville.
  • Superpowered Evil Side: The Sorceress is this for Cozy Glow.

    Queen Chrysalis
The former ruler of the Changelings. She tried many times to conquer Equestria only to fail and was ultimately turned to stone for her crimes. Chrysalis is the only member of her species not to reform. Having been freed from her prison through unknown means, she reunites with a group of changelings still loyal to her and begins her plans for revenge.
  • Out of Focus: Chrysalis has received the least focus of the Legion of Doom, with Tirek getting two focus stories before she even gets one. She finally returns in "My Big Fat Pink Wedding."
  • One-Winged Angel: After succeeding in absorbing Cheese Sandwich's love for Pinkie, Chrysalis takes on a terrifying new form called Hyper Chrysalis.
  • Never Recycle Your Schemes: Her plan in "My Big Fat Pink Wedding" is similar to her previous plans in "A Canterlot Wedding" and "To Where And Back Again". Just like in the former, she takes the place of the bride-to-be Pinkie Pie while similar to the latter she kidnaps all the bearers of the Elements of Harmony and replaces them with her Changelings. However, she makes the same mistake by ignoring someone she believes to be unimportant which in this case is Buttercream who with help from Flurry Heart and Elytra discovers and foils her scheme.
  • No-Sell: In her hyper state, Queen Chrysalis' hide is durable and strong that she is basically invincible. Not even getting blasted by magic or stomped on by a dragon or breathed by fire by them is hardly fazes her.

Independent Villains

    Grogar
An evil ram sorcerer who ruled Equestria in the past and was known as the "Father of Monsters". His spirit has returned and is acting towards an unknown purpose.
  • Adaptational Badass: He's implied to be even more powerful than what he was implied to be in the show.
  • Greater-Scope Villain: He's the one who released Tirek, Chrysalis and Cozy Glow from stone, and is the one the Brotherhood of Grogar serve and seek to revive. Word of God states that this Grogar is more like a force of nature hiding in the shadows.

    The Red Beast
A giant rhinoceros beetle type creature who seeks to destroy the Treehouse of Harmony.
  • Big "NO!": In typical villain fashion, he says this as he's being defeated.
  • The Reveal: The Red Beast is revealed to be General Scutellum in disguise.

    General Scutellum
An evil changeling who leads a group of changelings in the absence of their queen.
  • The Dragon: According to his character bio, Scutellum has been loyal to Queen Chrysalis ever since he was hatched from his egg.
  • Voice of the Legion: In his combined form he and his soldiers speak all at once giving this effect.

    Sendak
An elderly centaur who is Tirek's mentor. He was sent to a lifetime of labor in the mines after being caught kidnapping a unicorn but he was eventually freed after being turned to stone by a mysterious figure. Seeking out Tirek, Sendak offered a chance to work together to get revenge on all their enemies.
  • Evil Mentor: He was the one who taught Tirek how to steal magic.
  • Evil Old Folks: Appears much older than Tirek.
  • Taken for Granite: Someone (implied to be Grogar) managed to turn Sendak into stone only to free him sometime later.
  • Villain Team-Up: Offers to help Tirek regain the ability to absorb magic and reclaim the throne of the Midnight Kingdom from his brother Scorpan.

    King and Queen Kriegspiel
A pair of mysterious Alicorns and Cozy Glow's parents.
  • Ambiguous Situation: The heroes constantly question whether or not they are true Alicorns or Cozy's parents. The couple insist that they are real Alicorns and her parents and get defensive when someone points it out. The final chapter reveals they aren't real ponies and they are creations of Cozy Glow from the Alicorn Amulet.
  • Chess Motifs: Their crowns and even their cutie marks are based off their namesake chess pieces.
  • Meaningful Name: "Kriegspiel" in German translates to "war game", appropriate for their Chess Motifs.
  • No Name Given: Their real names are unknown.
  • The Reveal: They aren't really her parents and are not even real ponies but creations of Cozy Glow from the Alicorn Amulet.

    Anatankha
The sphinx that Somnambula faced to rescue Prince Hisan.
  • Accidental Hero: It turns out, after the Pillars were sealed in Limbo with the Pony of Shadows, she collected their artifacts and placed them where they would eventually be found years later so the Pillars could return. Anatankha did this just to assure Somnambula would return and she could have her revenge on her, but it is thanks to this that the heroes managed to defeat the Pony of Shadows and the Pillars by extension were able to help against several other evil forces. This becomes part of the reason everyone offer Anatankha redemption.
  • Crazy-Prepared: She knew how Somnambula became trapped in Limbo with the other Pillars and the Pony of Shadows, but knew that she would be back someday, and prepared her revenge while she was gone. She set up an entire temple full of riddles and traps specifically for Somnambula and left clues for her so she could find it once she returned.
  • Heel–Face Turn: After everyone learns about her past and the humiliation she suffered against the other sphinxes, and how her actions in the past ended up helping defeat the Pony of Shadows, they offer her a chance to be reformed like other past villains have. She becomes the first antagonist of the series to be reformed.
  • Named by the Adaptation: Her name is revealed by Somnambula in Let My Ponies Go!, instead of simply being known as "The Sphinx" like in canon. This turns out to be justified, since Somnambula explains that the reason her name was never mentioned before is because many believe saying her name brings bad luck.
  • Taken for Granite: She turned herself to stone so she can meet Somnambula again no matter how long it took.
  • Woobie, Destroyer of Worlds: Her true motivations for revenge against Somnambula are revealed to be not because she was a Sore Loser against her, but because after she was defeated by Somnambula, all the other sphinxes mocked her for her loss, despite having followed their traditions perfectly, and was made a laughing stock among them. So she planned her revenge on Somnambula due to seeing her as the source of all her suffering. When she reveals this to Somnambula and the others, they all can't help but feel a little bad for her.

    Zeb
Nightshade's manager
  • Jerkass: He isn't a nice person to say the least. He is even seen mocking Nightshade's goodbye speech to Svengallop.

    Svengallop
Svengallop is the head of the music company Nightshade works for.

    Erebus
An evil djinn who was sealed away by the zebras a long time ago. Zeb finds his vase and plans to use the music industry as a way to free him.

    Dark Changelings
A hive of Changelings who refused to change their ways and still remain loyal to Queen Chrysalis.
  • Bluff the Imposter: Subverted. General Scutum has created a spell that allows a changeling to completely copy a pony's memory.
  • Fusion Dance: They discovered a way to merge into a giant form which resembles a giant beetle with pinchers.
  • Lean and Mean: The Spy Changelings are skinner than their brethern and they are definitely mean.
  • The Brute: There are large changelings known as Brutes in Chrysalis's hive. They resemble rhinoceros and have tough skin hides.
  • Zerg Rush: What they lack in strength, they make up with sheer numbers.
