The Literature Club

    In General
  • Artifact Name: For a while after Boyfriend and Girlfriend join and get the other members into it, the Literature Club ends up focusing more on singing than...well, literature. The Protagonist lampshades this when the club makes live singing performances their activity for the Festival, and at the beginning of the Encore Week it's noted that they've been using the music room more than the actual Music Club. It's ultimately subverted, though: "Love N' Funkin" explains that after Boyfriend and Girlfriend leave the game, the Literature Club returns to their usual activities, only focusing on singing again whenever the two come to visit.
  • Promoted to Playable: In addition to Mirror Mode making all of them playable in songs where they're the opponents, all of the club members except Yuri have at least one song in which they're the player character by default:
    • Girlfriend sings "Love N' Funkin" against all of the other female members of the Literature Club.
    • Monika is the player character in all four songs of the Encore Week, as well as "Wilted".
    • Sayori sings in "Constricted" against Zipper.
    • Natsuki is the player character in "Catfight", singing against Yuri.
    • The Protagonist is the player character in "You and Me", singing against one of the girls of the player's choosing.
    Boyfriend

Boyfriend

  • Break the Cutie: In Bad Ending, Boyfriend has to face off against Sayori, Yuri, and Natsuki at their worst as reality breaks down around them, clearly struggling and not looking very confident doing so. Seeing his beloved drop dead halfway through "HOME" causing him to go absolutely mental, and he dies after the song's conclusion futilely holding Girlfriend.
  • Bridal Carry: Holds Girlfriend this way in "Takeover Medley", using the same sprites as in "Stress" from the original game.
  • The One Guy: He's the only male member of the Literature Club until the Protagonist joins sometime afterwards
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: There are several instances throughout the mod where Boyfriend's Fearless Fool demeanor drops in favor of anger or fear:
    • When Monika deletes everything in Hating Simulator to keep singing with Boyfriend, including Girlfriend, Boyfriend flips out at her and is visibly angry throughout all of "Your Demise" afterwards.
    • His dialogue is described as "terrified beep boop noises" when the Literature Club (including Girlfriend, again) begins to corrupt after "Obsession" and he's cornered by Sayori, who insists on keeping him there forever.
    • In Bad Ending, Boyfriend is struggling to sing and looks genuinely worried and distraught, with a light shadow over his eyes that gets worse in his down pose. Once Girlfriend's file corrupts (again), and she's Killed Off for Real, he succumbs to the same Sanity Slippage as the rest of the Literature Club and dies shortly afterwards while tearfully holding Girlfriend.
  • Slasher Smile: He shows a vicious one in Bad Ending during the Poem segments of "Stagnant". Later on, he sports it in his normal appearance after Girlfriend dies midway through "HOME".
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: The ending of the Prologue reveals that Boyfriend stole Senpai's mic so Monika could sing. He had no idea it would lead to all of Hating Simulator, plus Girlfriend, getting deleted by Monika.
  • Wingding Eyes: His left eye becomes the prohibition sign from his usual shirt during the Poem segments of "Stagnant".
    Girlfriend

Girlfriend

  • Head-Tiltingly Kinky: Whatever the love song she wrote for Boyfriend in "Love N' Funkin" entails, it leaves the other club members utterly shocked by its explicit content. Yuri in particular expresses confusion about several verses about 'the blood of [her] enemies'.
  • The Voiceless: Outside of the song countdown, Girlfriend never speaks and instead communicates with gestures.
    Monika

    Sayori

Sayori

  • Heal the Cutie: Boyfriend and Girlfriend joining the Literature Club and getting everyone into singing is indicated to have greatly helped Sayori manage her depression. The Protagonist notes that she's been waking up on time more and more recently, and Sayori herself admits before singing "Joyride" that though it's still hard for her to stay positive about herself, it feels easier every day.
"Seeing how much good we've been doing... It helps give me a reason to get out of bed every morning, knowing that we were able to accomplish this."
  • Innocent Soprano: Sayori has the highest vocals of any opponent in the mod and hits some very high notes in multiple of her songs, notably "It's Complicated" and "Constricted". She's also just as friendly and sweet-natured as in the original game. This turns out to be a subversion at first, as she's actually still unstable and possessive as a result of the game's instability and her position as Club President. Once Monika returns, however, Sayori returns to normal and plays the trope straight.
  • Nightmare Fetishist: Downplayed, but Sayori finds Zipper—a monstrous, constantly-shrieking creature in a straitjacket—to be cute, and takes no issue with him following her around all day. The rest of the Literature Club is understandably less enthusiastic.
  • Obfuscating Stupidity: Following Yuri's week, it's revealed that Sayori, being the Club President, knew that Boyfriend and Girlfriend were from outside of the game as soon as they arrived, and even correctly deduced that they were from the real world based on the fact that their files hadn't existed on the computer before their appearance. It's loosely implied that she feigned obliviousness in order to keep Boyfriend and Girlfriend from leaving, and only dropped the act once Yuri's Sanity Slippage hit.
  • Odd Friendship: Sayori is canonically friends with Zipper, which is shown through the Side Story song from the Plus update "Constricted". One is a mysterious Cartoon Creature in a straitjacket who can only communicate through screams, the other is a cheerful schoolgirl, and yet they managed to bond to the point where Zipper had been happily following Sayori around, leading her to introduce him to the rest of the literature club.

    Natsuki

Natsuki

  • Girly Girl with a Tomboy Streak: Highlighted by "Baka!", which starts off as a fairly low-key pop track and features an overlay of drawings of cats and hearts appearing on the screen...before an electric guitar kicks in and turns the song into a hard rock track, with the cat drawings gaining X's for eyes and the heart drawings becoming broken.
  • Tsundere: Just like in her home game. She even claims to be the best at subverting expectations, and of course her second song is outright named "Baka!".
    Yuri

Yuri

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/yuri_33.png

  • Promoted to Playable: Notable in that she's the only club member to actually avert this outside of Mirror Mode, as all the songs she appears in either have her as the opponent or have her appear in the background.
  • Sanity Slippage: Halfway through "Obsession", the music slows to a crawl and the screen has a Fade to Black. When it fades back in, Yuri is grabbing her chest and staring down at Boyfriend with a malicious Slasher Smile while breathing heavily.
  • Shrinking Violet: To the point that it's the name of her song in the Encore Week. Yuri is initially the most reluctant to sing out of the club members, and her first song features her taking a deep breath seemingly in an attempt to steady herself.
    Protagonist

The Protagonist

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/protag_9.png

  • Adaptational Nice Guy: Particularly in regards to his friendship with Sayori, which was very vitriolic on his end in the original Doki Doki Literature Club!. Here, the Protagonist never says anything remotely disparaging about her; on the contrary, he fondly remarks on how much happier Sayori has been since Boyfriend and Girlfriend joined the club.
  • Logical Latecomer: Having joined the Literature Club sometime after Boyfriend and Girlfriend's first visit, he's understandably confused about the other members' decision to sing for their Festival activity, though he acknowledges that it's been inspirational for them. He's also the only one to question the sudden change of setting and outfits when Boyfriend and Girlfriend bring the other club members to their world.
  • The Unfought: Although he appears in the Festival Week to ask Boyfriend for his help, he never sings a single song, at least not in the original update. The Plus update subverts this by giving him his own songs to sing, but he remains the only club member besides Girlfriend that doesn't sing during the Festival Week: "Titular", his song remix, is a Freeplay song instead.
