The Mighty Morphin Power Rangers

"Bring me a group of teenagers; with attitude!"

The titular "teenagers with attitude", and the main characters of the story.

  • Adaptational Angst Upgrade: Here, on top of their soon-to-be ranger duties, the five have to deal with high school drama, family issues, jobs, and more; they aren't really getting a break here.
  • Adaptation Personality Change: Downplayed, as while the original five were a little laxer in terms of personality compared to later seasons, they certainly still had traits that stuck out with them. The story more just expands on those traits than outright making new ones.
  • Age Lift: Downplayed, as they're still teenagers, though they're a little older than what they were at the start of the series, being 18 and in senior year here while most media generally portrays them as around 15/16.
  • Animal Motifs: As always, the group is associated with extinct creatures; Jason has the Tyrannosaurus-rex, Trini has the sabretooth tiger, Zack has the mastodon, Kimberly has the Pterodactyl, and Billy has the Triceratops.
  • Color-Coded Characters: As is expected of the franchise; Jason has red, Trini has yellow, Zack has black, Kimberly has pink, and Billy has blue.

    Jason Lee Scott

Mighty Morphin Tyranno Ranger (Jason Lee Scott)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/red_ranger_1.png
"Really would have killed 'ya to say, 'love you', huh?"

A student at Angel Grove High who has a bad reputation and very few friends. In spite of his attempts to try and overcome how others see him, however, his own lack of social skills and tendency to act before he thinks often stops him from making much progress.

After stumbling upon the powercoins in an alley dumpster, Jason accidentally activates one of them, in the process becoming the red Tyranno Ranger, and thus the first member of the team.

  • The Atoner: Used to be involved in some pretty bad stuff, though by the present he's seemingly out of it and is trying to make up for his mistakes.
  • Bully Hunter: The second he sees Billy getting bullied, he immediately steps in, despite not knowing him.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Fairly sarcastic and monotone toward just about everybody, including himself when you take the above quote into account.
"An inch closer and it might have popped a tooth out, though thankfully he wouldn't need any dental work after all...Maybe...Eh, he'll see where the day goes from here."
  • Didn't Think This Through: Tends to act before he thinks, which sometimes even takes him off-guard.
  • The Dreaded: Everybody at Angel Grove High is absolutely terrified of him.
  • Face of a Thug: Downplayed; everybody is absolutely terrified of him at school. In spite of this, he's actually fairly friendly, if awkward, underneath the surface.
  • Hero with Bad Publicity: Jason really is a decent guy, but everybody is either scared of him or doesn't trust him.
  • Loners Are Freaks: Prefers spending most of his time alone, not enjoying parties, preferring to sit alone at lunch, and enjoying camping, which is an activity that largely takes you away from interacting with others.
  • The Protagonist: The main character of the story.
  • Tall, Dark, and Handsome: Six feet tall, with black hair, and apparently, quite handsome.

    Trini Kwan

Trini Kwan

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/trini_7.png
"You're invited to my birthday this weekend, well, more accurately my party; my mom is sorta specific on only celebrating the actual day with family."

A friendly, caring girl attending Angel Grove High, and one of the only people in school who trusts and likes Jason for who he is.

  • Nice Girl: Immediately rushes to Jason's defense when Zack starts pointing out that he's got sort of a bad reputation, and is nothing but sweet and friendly in every other scene.
  • Only Friend: The only person in the entire school that seems to genuinely like Jason.

    Zack Taylor

Zack Taylor

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/zack_0.png
"I get he's your friend and all, Trini, but the dude's never really talked much, and...You know, sorta has a bad wrap-"

The Big Man on Campus of Angel Grove High.

  • Jerkass Has a Point: Downplayed on the jerk part, but he has a point when he starts talking about Jason's fairly bad reputation around the school, which is more than deserved if the gossip among the students is anything to go off of.
  • Nice Guy: While certainly hesitant around Jason, he at least tries to be friendly toward him, and was gonna rush in to help Billy had Jason not beat him to it.

    Kimberly Ann Hart

Kimberly Ann Hart

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kimberly_8.png
"Yeah...Just moved here."

A new kid in town who is struggling to adjust to her new life.

  • Naïve Newcomer: Only just moved to Angel Grove by the start of the story.

    Billy Cranston

Billy Cranston

"I know Bulk and Skull aren't exactly a huge deal for someone like you, but...I'm not really good with this sorta thing. I know somebody else was gonna help, but you did it first...And I appreciate that."

The resident Teen Genius of Angel Grove High, and a close friend of Trini and Zack.

  • Bully Magnet: Thanks to his frail figure and high intelligence, he's a pretty easy target, especially for Bulk & Skull.
  • Geek Physiques: Noted as being very thin and tall.
  • Teen Genius: Miss Appleby's star pupil, and one of the smarter kids in school.

Bulk & Skull

    In General

Bulk & Skull

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/bulk_and_skull_go_go_power_rangers.jpg
"Oh no, look whose here...Bulk & Skull!"

A pair of bullies that attend Angel Grove, and regularly try to make the lives of those around them miserable in their attempts to be "cool". In all reality though, they're essentially harmless and little more than morons with a lot to prove and little means of doing so.

  • The Bully: Regularly pick on Billy and anybody else who they see as easy prey.
  • The Dividual: Downplayed, as there are clear differences in their personalities, but they tend to most affect the plot as a pair than alone.
  • Heterosexual Life-Partners: They're each other's best friends, and also they're each other's Only Friend.
  • Jerkass: Skull less so than Bulk, but ultimately, they're both petty, obnoxious jerks who spend almost all their free time screwing with the other students of Angel Grove High.
  • Mask of Confidence: Like to act tough and make themselves out to be the baddest dudes at Angel Grove High, but the second the principal gets involved, they crumble into a begging mess.
  • Those Two Guys: Never seen without each other.

    Bulk

Farkas "Bulk" Bulkmeier

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/bulk.png
"Sorry pipsqueak, but you caught us in a pretty bad mood; turns out, we don't got quite enough money for lunch today, so how about you spot us and we let you go."

The larger and more intelligent member between the pair, who tends to take charge whenever the two get up to their usual schemes.

  • Big Bad Wannabe: He's little more than your average, everyday bully, though he certainly thinks he's a lot tougher than that.
  • Dumb Muscle: While Bulk is the smarter between the two, it's not by much, and he largely is still relying considerably on his large size to intimidate people rather than anything else.
  • Smug Snake: Thinks he's really tough and isn't afraid to say as much to Jason's face, even though he is fairly obviously vastly outmatched. The only reason he doesn't get flattened out is because Jason didn't want to hurt him.

    Skull

Eugene "Skull" Skullovitch

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/skull_2.png
"Yeah, right, Bulk!"

Bulk's partner in crime, who is considerably more incompetent and foolish, which is saying something. However, he's also considerably more empathetic than his partner.

  • The Ditz: Considerably more oblivious and moronic than his partner, who himself isn't much smarter.
  • The Dragon: To Bulk and his various schemes.
  • Know When to Fold 'Em: Is smart enough to try and back off the second Jason stands up to them. He only gets back involved after Bulk points out how Jason wouldn't actually do anything.

Angel Grove

Angel Grove High School

    Mister Caplan

Principal Jonah Caplan

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/mister_caplan.png
"Good performance boys...But I'm afraid that this little stunt of yours just landed you another stint in detention."

The principal of Angel Grove High, and longtime "nemesis" to Bulk & Skull.

  • Sitcom Arch-Nemesis: Serves as one to Bulk & Skull, regularly giving them detention and never putting up with their antics.

    Miss Appleby

Miss Barbara Appleby

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/miss_appleby.png
"Remember; presentations on our study of natural selection will begin on Monday."

The biology teacher at Angel Grove High.

  • Cool Teacher: Overall very friendly and likable, especially when compared to some of her students.

Jason's Family

    Jason's Father

Samuel Scott

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/samuel_scott.png
"Wake up, bud. School's in an hour."

Jason's friendly, if confused father.

  • Acrofatic: Notably chubbier than other variations, though Jason hints at him having once been a star football player in spite of that. Or his age simply caught up with him.
  • The Cameo: In issue #1, where he gets little more than a glorified cameo.

    Jason's Mother

Beverly Scott

Jason's mother, who has passed away by the time of the story.

Others

    Ernie

Ernie

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ernie.png
"Don't worry about it. The first one's always on the house."

The owner of the Angel Grove Youth Center, and a friend of Jason's.

  • Nice Guy: Gets along very well with his customers, and is immediately welcoming to Kimberly the second he learns she's new in town.
  • Only Friend: Or at least, the only one that Jason doesn't act super awkward and uncomfortable around.

    Geki

Prince Geki

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/geki.png
"You're acting like you've won...All you've done is delay the inevitable."

A man cloaked in black with affiliations to Zordon.

  • Black Cloak: Until we learn his name, Geki was mainly being identified by his clothing; AKA, the cloak he was wearing.
  • Courier: Was seemingly put in charge of delivering the powercoins to...Somewhere. Unfortunately, a defeat at the hands of Goldar stops this from happening.
  • Decoy Protagonist: Despite the story opening on him and seemingly setting up a fight between him and Goldar, it happens entirely offscreen and we don't see him again until near the end of the first issue. The real main character is actually Jason.

Villains

    Rita Repulsa

Rita Repulsa

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/rita_repulsa.png
"How long has it been, Geki? A thousand years...Five thousand...Or- Ahhhhhh, yes...That's it...Ten-thousand years in that infernal grid, biding my time for someone, anyone to let me out of that stupid seal."

A powerful sorceress with plans to conquer the planet, Earth. However, these plans were put on hold following a battle with the ancient wizard, Zordon, who sealed her away for 10,000 years, only to be released in the present day with plans to continue her conquest.

  • Big Bad: Has been set-up as the main villain of the story.
  • The Faceless: Her appearance isn't described at all by the end of her debut scene.

    Goldar

Goldar

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/goldar.png
"On the contrary, Prince, I am so glad to see you again, I've been really itching for a rematch."

A griffin/monkey-like monster in gold armor, who serves as Rita's right-hand man and the general of her forces.

  • Cool Sword: A long, golden one that can shoot fire.
  • The Dragon: Rita's second-in-command and most loyal ally.
  • Offscreen Moment of Awesome: Managed to defeat Geki, seemingly with little difficulty, during their duel in issue #1. And we never got to see it.
