It seems I have a lot to catch up because I didn't check the thread for the last few days. In the meanwhile, a random topic:

Do you think Tsuruya already suspects something about Shinobu?

IMO, Tsuruya is too clever to be completely unaware that something is going on with Shinobu. On the other hand, the latter seems to be skilled and experienced enough to pull it off. Hmm... it's kind of difficult to predict how much a Genre Savvy character can read from another one.

It would be amusing if after The Reveal both of them end being mistaken: Shinobu convinced that Tsuruya didn't suspect a thing about her (sans the Ninja Maid thing) and Tsuruya being Entertainingly Wrong about the truth, maybe something like suspecting that Shinobu and her father are in a Secret Relationship. Although...

Unrelated.

Indeed.

Edit:

@Savoie:

Riddle Me This: If Yuki can produce powerful items like Kyon's watch and enhanced longcoat more-or-less at will, why hasn't anyone floated the idea of giving Mikuru, Kanae, and other more vulnerable members similar gear? As far as I can tell, there would be no drawbacks at all.

We discussed something along the lines sometime ago. I suppose the main reason is because Mikuru and Kanae simply don't put themselves in the harm's way like Kyon does, so there was not much need for it. IMO, Tsuruya would make good use of some protective gear (with her line of job, she probably already owns a few pieces of equipment), especially after the last Cliffhanger (LL-6). Imagine Spot: Bulletproof Kimono.

From a doylist PoV, maybe the reason why none of the girls use something like Kyon's skinsuit is to avoid Fanservice. Even though wearing "something that looked like nothing so much as black paint" with "ridged metal studs appeared on the back of each knuckle" and "metallic vertical rails were described in the skinsuit" doesn't sound like too much if it's covered with normal clothes, but if they receive an attack like the slash of a knife or sword aimed to the torso or something incendiary like a bomb or perhaps an energy weapon, the result would be a mix of (justified) Clothing Damage and Sensual Spandex.

Question: If I post a NSFW picture in the form xxx.yyy/zzz (that is without creating a link, without a http:// prefix and adding a content warning), it still goes against this forum policy? I ask this because I found a picture of Tsuruya that could help to illustrate the above paragraph but I'm not sure if such a thing is permitted under said conditions.

@Marq FJA:

@Jigaboo's three-Haruhis pic: Okay, aside from Disappearanceverse!Haruhi, who are the other two? The one at the top looks like normal!Haruhi, but is wearing different clothes (notably elbow-long gloves), and the one on his right is shorter and apparently younger, so she seems to be kid!Haruhi from the time Kyon went to the past and acted out his role as "John Smith".

IINM, that image depicts three versions of Haruhi from the Video Game Adaptations. From left to right: young!Haruhi from Suzumiya Haruhi no Yakusoku(spoiler)

, superheroine!Haruhi* from Tomadoi and Disappearance!Haruhi from Tsuisou.

@Specular: Who's this?

(Also, that last picture you were asking about is Akitsu from Sekirei.)

That's correct. Here you can find the same crop pre-resize.

I knew I could rely on Specular to come up with a proper reply, though I'm not sure if that doylist reading is the correct one; while K:BDH doesn't put an emphasis on fanservice, by no means is it innocent, or even attempting to be. Besides, that would be a relatively minor instance by any standard, not least of which is the standard of the work this one is based off of. I'd also argue that Yuki could create items less prone to exploitative damages without harming the flow of the narrative, thus fulfilling that doylist agenda while at the same time averting a certain all-too-tempting storytelling pitfall.

[up][up] Yeah, I think it would still go against the "no direct-linking to NSFW material" policy. Yeesh, I wish Eddie would just modify the PM system so that we can send PMs to more than one person (even if with a maximum limit to avoid spammers).

All we need is some safe third-party location to post the links on, since there would be no reason we can't link to that.

Not if the picture itself is NSFW as Specular suggests.

For sharing of work-safe images taken from sites like Danbooru with NSFW ads I suggest getting Dropbox and using its public folder. You can just drag-and-drop images from the site to the folder and use a right-click option to create a link to paste here.

I thought you meant the image itself, not the link.

I guess that would work. Edit: Maybe making the link into a tinyurl and then linking to the tinyurl preview (which shows the full link but not the page)?

I'm not sure how the moderators would handle circumventing the rules like that.

@Savoie:

I'm not sure if that doylist reading is the correct one; while K:BDH doesn't put an emphasis on fanservice, by no means is it innocent, or even attempting to be (...)

I was just thinking aloud about the logical outcome of having a character whose skin is more resistant than their clothes. I think it counts as a subversion of My Suit Is Also Super.

Now I'm curious about something. If Yuki gives the girls creative freedom to design their protective gear while she handles the technical aspects, what do you think they would suggest?

I left Koizumi out because he gets to transform into an Energy Being, so armor would be useless in his case, but I include Nonoko. Surely she would like to have a word on the subject, we could be talking about her Magical Girl uniform after all.

For example, some time ago I suggested using Haruhi's iconic Red Armband of Leadership with the proper "incantation" to buff the "protective attributes" of whatever clothes the user is wearing at the moment, just like an accessory in a RPG.

Re. NSFW pics.

I would like to know the precise reasons behind the prohibition. If the objective is to prevent search engines from finding links to NSFW content within the site, then the simple measure of not creating a link in the first place should be enough. Avoiding the prefix http:// in the case of a pure-text address helps too.

A Content Warning in the case of NSFW material is a must, though.

For example, something like this: This picture (tiny.cc/9t6nlw) reminds me a lot of K:BDH.

The NSFW-link ban is because 1) the forum and wiki are almost entirely open to public non-member viewing, and 2) according to some sort of surveys conducted by Eddie and whoever was assisting him, a good portion of our membership falls within the early-to-mid-teens age range.

I think that the main deciding factor for enhanced apparel would be the season, so whatever they pick would likely be summerwear.

I remember someone on theforum mentioning how Brian can pull of a meta version of Wham Line by stating Half-Life is the property of Valve in the disclaimers. Well I was re-reading the story and reached part one of Resonance Cascade when...

Disclaimer: The novel series of Suzumiya Haruhi that began with 'The Melancholy of Suzumiya Haruhi' is the creation of Nagaru Tanigawa. No disrespect is intended by the posting of this fanfiction, as I do not own the characters or settings involved. I'm merely dabbling with another set of paints. T Vtropes(dot)org is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 3.0 Unported License, and so is every part of this fic that isn't the property of someone else. Bingo.

Also, sorry to bug you, Eamil, but I noticed that while jumping to a chapter from the To C seems to work in the Kindle version of KBDH, all chapters after 49(Open Battle VI) all say they're chapter 49. (What I mean is, the Kindle tells you what chapter you're currently reading. For all chapters after 49, it still says "Chapter 49: Resonance Cascade Part 3".)

Not really an issue, since navigation works properly, just a nitpick I noticed.

Thanks so much for the kindle version, though! I find it so useful when work is slow.

MOBI format only seems to be able to handle up to 50 chapters that the Kindle will actually recognize as chapters, which is one reason I disabled the auto-generated table of contents and did my own from scratch. It stops at chapter 49 instead of 50 because of the In Medias Res Prologue. (I'm assuming this is also why the little chapter-marking dots on the progress bar stop after a certain point on my keyboard Kindle.) I'm not sure if the limitation is inherent to the format or if it's an issue with Calibre.

And no problem, I just did it for my own enjoyment and figured other people might want to see it too. I'm glad someone else finds it useful! grin

(Multiple edits because I shouldn't post when I'm tired.)

Further editing: Looking into it, I found a bug report on Calibre's web site and no mentions anywhere else of a chapter limit in MOBI format so it seems to be an issue with Calibre.

Edit again: Aha! It's not a bug, for some reason it's a setting. Instead of just converting any links into chapters there's a setting for the number of links it will convert to chapters and the default setting is 50. There's a ton of settings for format conversion and I didn't spot this one before because I didn't think something like that would be a setting so I wasn't looking for it. So now that I know it's there it'll be fixed next time I update the file. (Actually it should be fixed now if you want to take the trouble to redownload, but I haven't put the new file on my own Kindle to test it.)

Really? That young? I was under the impression that the average troper was a lot older.

@Savoie:

Not necessarily. Their outfit could boast of the same "environmental conditioning" upgrade than Kyon's coat. Although, if their design is too warm for summer they could draw people's attention, rendering them too conspicuous to use in mundane situations.

Re: Wham Line.

I think it was brought up mentioned a few pages ago. IMO, it doesn't count as a Wham Line because there was enough Foreshadowing in the previous chapters. Then again, that could be only me who got that impression. You know, I have this slight tendency to overthink things tongue.

Random thoughts.

Do you think the Brigade is going to honor one of the noble traditions of the "after-school club" and engage in an over-the-top game a la "'life-or-death' squirt-gun battle" during their trip to Hinamizawa?*

Considering the capabilities of the Brigade's members, something like the above could become quite a sight to behold, especially to Kyon's extended family. Mikuru would be in a serious disadvantage as a player, though. Maybe if the play a "Protect the VIP" scenario with her and someone else (Sasaki?) as the VIPs?

Now I think about it, a more serious form of these games could help Haruhi to become more efficient with the use of the limited version her powers. I mean, even if Haruhi has the benefit of being an Instant Expert, her combat performance during the Resonance Cascade chapters was poor due to lack of experience and she can't acquire it with the Hyperbolic Time Chamber because Yuki can't bring her with them to the daily trainings. For example, I'm picturing something like a laser tag mock battle between Haruhi and Kyon with their energy powers/weapons set at the lowest (let's call it "in'tar mode" in the latter's case)... Maybe I should stop reading Stargate's wikis for a while.

Random picture.

Yakuza-ish!Haruhi.

A minor, possibly interesting tidbit I noticed about the kanji on the sash: The kanji there comprise the name of the SOS-dan, sans the hiragana (and katakana in the case of Haruhi's given name) that usually accompany it. What is different, however, is the two kanji between Haruhi's family name (涼宮 - Suzumiya) and 'Brigade' (団 - '-dan'). They are 春日 which can be read as haru ('spring') and hi ('day'). Basically, it's Haruhi's given name in kanji. The interesting part (to me, at least) is that, as far as I remember, Haruhi's given name has always been written in katakana (ハルヒ).

Probably doesn't mean anything important; the artist probably wanted only kanji, so a possible writing of 'Haruhi' in kanji was used. Still, I thought it might be interesting enough to mention.

Similarly, I thought she would look at home as a Persona 4 character because of the glasses.

@Grahf:

I could be mistaken but I think Mikuru in the first picture looks more like her older self in her second attempt to disguise herself as a teacher because of the white chalk stick in her right hand. About that, do you think Kyon would approve having Mikuru as his private tutor? Who knows, maybe there is yet another Stable Time Loop in there tongue.

IINM, the cosplay of the second pic is from the main character of DNA 2. Funny considering that said character is a Time Police agent sent to the past to prevent Allergic to Love Unlucky Everydude from becoming The Pornomancer and causing overpopulation problems in the future. Seriously.

@Jason Ulloa:

Interesting. According to the site, that illustration belongs to "Haruhi Comic Anthology", an official doujinshi published by Kadokawa. This is the same publishing company of the novels and the manga spin-offs, so maybe there is a little of canonicity on that way to write Haruhi's name.

Notice:

I added anchors (see "Special markup" section) in the Characters' page for easier linking: Kyon, Haruhi, Yuki, Mikuru, Koizumi, Tsuruya, Kanae, Ryouko, Kuyou, Nonoko, Sasaki, Fujiwara, Kyouko, Kenshiro, Aida, Kasai, Shinobu, Sakura, Mori, Hinamizawa, Kitago, Combine, Wataru, IDSE, Miyuki, Fujiya and Miyoko.

I hope that eventually the system will be set to avoid making a Red Link of these Pot Holes.
