"Denying reality won't save you."
The Bridge Demon

Lalin's Curse is a webcomic created by Isabel Terol Martinez (Isakytm) that made its debut on the Webtoon app in 2018. The comic is a supernatural drama/thriller that follows David, a 'true believer' in the supernatural who strives to prove to everyone, especially his skeptical best friend Felix, that there are strange things going on in their town.

DELETE, a spinoff manga by the same author, serves as the story's prequel and provides information on David and Felix's past and the game they made together before their friendship went downhill.

WARNING: All spoilers are unmarked.

This comic provides examples of:

  • Action Girl: Maria barely hesitates to help David save Cody in Episodes 29-30, distracting the kidnappers by screaming a lot and waving a pitchfork at them.
  • Admiring the Abomination: David insists that in Episode 33 that Cody's reptilian form is "amazing".
  • Affectionate Nickname:
    • Tobias's friends often refer to him as "Tobi".
    • Maria calls Lucia "Luzu".
  • Affectionate Gesture to the Head: How Felix greets David in Episode 40 after they finally find each other. Of course only after knocking David upside the head for making him so worried.
  • All of the Other Reindeer: As shown in Episode 14, David has gone his whole life with his family and friends dismissing his claims of seeing paranormal entities, and at age 12 was victim to horrible bullying for his open belief in aliens and the like.
  • Always in Class One: David, Felix, Tobias, Lucia and Maria are all in Class 3-A, while Eric, Cody, Noemi and Selena are in 3-B. Played with in Episodes 12-13 when Eric and Cody sneak into Class 3-A to keep discussing the scale.
  • Ambiguously Evil: Kris seemed willing enough to attack and sedate teenagers but draws the line at torturing one and outright states that she hates "Beanpole", making it likely that she doesn't derive the same joy from this job that her partner does.
  • And I Must Scream: The demon entity from Episode 9 seems to have trapped/assimilated countless souls within its body, all of them in pain and pleading for salvation.
    ???: I'm hungry...help...
  • Animal Motifs: Dogs and butterflies for David, dogs/wolves for Tobias, crows for Felix, lizards/dragons and small rodents for Cody, frogs for Eric and bears for Maria.
  • Antagonist in Mourning: A lot of "Beanpole" 's hatred towards Cody stems from the fact that Cody murdered his "companion". The exact nature of their relationship is yet to be revealed.
  • Art Evolution: When Lalin's Curse was re-released as a Webtoon Original in 2019, Episodes 0-2 and some of Episode 3 were completely redrawn, making it clear to see how much Isaky's art style had improved over that time, and again so when the story picks up where it left off from Episodes 16 onwards.
  • Asleep in Class: Maria in Episode 3 and David in Episode 13.
  • Badass Adorable: So far David, Felix, Cody and Maria all apply.
  • Badass in Distress: Cody was not having a good time in Episodes 20-28, what with him giving in to the sedative, and being captured and tortured by Kris and "Beanpole".
  • Bad Boss: Uxio. From the jump he's rude and dismissive, treating strangers, children and his own employees with contempt.
  • Beneath the Mask:
    • Figuratively and literally in Cody's case. His anxious, friendly nature hides the fact that he's actually a powerful reptilian is weighed down by the guilt of murder and a fear of being exposed and seen as a monster. He also, understandably, wears a demon-like mask when using his powers in front of other people.
    • David is bright, optimistic and excitable most of the time but deep down he's horribly insecure when it comes to his loved ones' perception of him, and is prone to trauma flashbacks and bouts of anger.
  • Berserk Button:
    • David can seemingly handle criticism from classmates, but having his friend Cody shut down his theory in Episode 13 - and so harshly at that - triggered a very nasty retort from him.
David: If you think I'm some superstitious idiot, then why the hell are you here?! Asshole!
    • Felix has plenty: cats, cockroaches, people who kidnap his best friend...
  • The Berserker:
    • Caring very little for consequences or Tobias's reasoning, Felix insists on bringing a knife with him to interrogate Uxio on David's whereabouts. He ends up using it to cut Rafael's hand, but all the tension and rage within him ends up causing him severe heart palpitations.
    • "Beanpole" is notably more hot-headed than Kris, constantly the first to start an actual fight.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: David and Cody are pretty mild-mannered for the most part, but between their top-tier powers and shared tendency to let anger, anxiety and/or protectiveness get to their head, they can both be very dangerous.
  • Big Creepy-Crawlies: Massive bug-like creatures are found around the spirit world equivalent of Felix's bedroom window in Episode 9.
  • Big Friendly Dog: Coco, David's golden retriever.
  • Big Guy, Little Guy: Eric and Cody.
  • Bilingual Bonus: Unsurprising for a story set in Spain, some key words are written in Spanish, though often with a translation alongside.
  • Birds of a Feather: How "Smee" tries to appeal to Cody in Episode 36
"Smee": Why do you hate a brother so much? Humans and full reptilians loath us half-bloods! And there aren't many of us. We should stick together!
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: As evident in Episode 11, Uxio is the type to put on a charming, polite air to get people to do what he wants (in this case, get David to follow him to a "hospital"). Naturally, it doesn’t work, since Uxio literally yelled at and manhandled David just seconds prior.
  • Blessed with Suck: David’s ability to see paranormal entities and heal himself would be pretty cool if only people actually believed him. Not to mention how his telekinesis outburst left his house a complete mess in Episode 18. Also, his powers take a toll on him the more he uses them (so far he's just had a nosebleed, but Isaky has confirmed that it'll get worse over time).
  • Blinded by Rage:
    • Note to self: telling David he’s delusional isn’t wise unless you want to have him cuss you out in front of his entire class.
    • In all his anger and determination to defeat the murderer, Cody completely forgets his own lack of fighting experience and almost immediately gets his ass kicked – and his hand ripped off.
    • Felix completely loses his patience when Rafael and Uxio catch him and Tobias at the motel, attacking Rafael with his knife and screaming so much at Uxio that his heart gives out.
  • Bloody Handprint: Several of these show up around the sinister Holy Mary statue in Episode 0, terrifying Monica.
  • Blonde, Brunette, Redhead:
    • David, Felix and Tobias (on the auburn end)
    • David, Cody and Maria
    • Selena, Lucia/Noemi and Maria
  • Brains and Brawn: David and Tobias are both the brains to Felix's brawn.
  • Break the Cutie:
    • David receives more than his fair share of trauma– constantly being dismissed, bullied to the point of almost committing suicide, getting kidnapped at age 14, finding out he has some lucrative powers that make him a target for dangerous people (both demonic and mortal), just to name a few.
    • Same goes for Cody, who is forcibly exposed to the cruel side of his species and – in his attempt to make his town safe – ends up killing someone and carrying his own guilt around with him. And let’s not forget about how he was beat up in a fight with "Beanpole", sedated and tortured.
  • Broken Pedestal:
    • David briefly loses his respect for Cody after finding out he’s the murderous reptilian in Episode 26. Maria is the reason why he came to his senses.
Maria: Him having secrets doesn't mean he doesn't care about you. Everyone has secrets, that's normal. You can't expect everyone to tell you everything.
    • Cody isn’t happy when he finds out the Boss – who he initially thought to be a kind, helpful man – was actually the one who ordered David’s kidnapping.
  • Broken Tears: Plenty, most notably in
    • Episode 21. David when he was about to jump off the bridge, and Felix after he wakes up and realizes that he let David get kidnapped.
    • Episode 37, when David tells Cody that he isn’t a monster and the latter breaks down crying.
  • Butterfly of Death and Rebirth: The blue morpho butterfly that follows David around. It also takes a liking to the white-haired twins from David's dream, who are implied to have passed away long ago, and serves as one of the recurring motifs in official art of the characters, notably David.
  • Bullying the Dragon:
    • Though the worst of the bullying seemed to happen long before David’s powers fully developed, it’s still not wise to mess with a kid with earth-shaking abilities.
    • Downplayed with Cody: he’s not bullied per se, but he’s often spoken over due to his quiet nature. David’s the first to fully understand how scary he can be.
  • Bystander Syndrome: Tobias gets tired of not being able to do much to help his mom's issues with work and alcoholism, and agrees to help Felix stalk Uxio in Episode 24.
  • Captain Oblivious: David apparently, when it comes to Tobias's feelings for him.
  • Cast of Snowflakes: Every single character, from the protagonists to the background characters, has a unique design.
  • Cats Are Mean: In Episode 4, Felix angrily chases away a black cat that attacked a crow in his yard. Naturally one wouldn’t think much of this until Episode 45 where the same cat is revealed to belong to Arhiel, and sent to spy on Felix. In fact, the cat serves as foreshadowing because it was the same one that showed up in Episode 0.
  • Chekhov's Gunman:
    • The substitute teacher from Episodes 12-13 seems unimportant enough. That is until she's revealed to be part of Uxio's group in Episode 45, now opening the possibility that she's at the school specifically to look out for special kids.
    • Esteban is introduced as the school janitor in Episode 15, and soon it's revealed that not only is he Cody's dad, but also one of Uxio's associates.
    • A small black cat is seen near Monica in Episode 0, and then chased off by Felix in Episode 4. In Episode 45, this cat is seen watching Felix through a window and then later with Arhiel, revealing itself to be her pet/spy.
  • Childhood Friends:
    • David and Felix have known each other since they were babies and see each other as brothers. They befriended Tobias when they first started school.
    • Eric and Noemi have also known each other for several years, by virtue of being next-door neighbors.
  • Children Forced to Kill: Cody succeeds in stabbing and killing "Smee" in self-defence after their Curb-Stomp Battle. Naturally, this murder takes a massive toll on Cody's emotional and mental state.
  • Classical Anti-Hero: As powerful as he is, David is plagued by deep-seated trauma, extreme emotions and a tendency to act without thinking.
  • Cold-Blooded Torture: What "Beanpole" subjects Cody to for refusing to tell him where he left David.
  • Color-Coded Characters:
    • David is yellow, orange and red
    • Felix is black, dark purple and navy blue
    • Tobi is dark green and black
    • Cody is red and teal
    • Eric is sky blue
    • Maria is orange and yellow
    • Lucia is dark blue
    • Noemi is black and magenta
    • Selena is white and pink
  • Cool Mask: Cody's disguise includes a demon-like mask.
  • Corner of Woe: David in Episode 12, and twice: once when he first shows up as Lucia and Maria arrive, and again when he dramatically falls to the floor after realizing that his friends can't see the bruises he tried to show them.
David: I don't understand anything anymore...I'm too tired...I'll stay here with my friend the floor, he's very cold and we understand each other...
    Maria: He just broke...
  • "Could Have Avoided This!" Plot: The events post-Episode 15 probably could’ve been avoided if David had just stayed in school.
  • Creepy Catholicism: While not exactly centered around religion, Lalin's Curse still features a plethora of religious themes (the statue of Mother Mary, churches, characters like David and Maria having names with Biblical connections, etc), a lot of which add to the unsettling vibes of the story.
  • Creepy Cathedral: The dream sequence that David and Esteban enter in Episode 43 features an old, foreboding church surrounded by graves that David initially refuses to go near due to his dislike/fear of cemeteries.
  • Creepy Cockroach: Played with. Some that we see have silly faces on them, but the ones that specifically show up on/near the demon are more realistic, serving as harbingers of its presence.
  • Cross-Popping Veins: Felix and Cody are both prone to this, especially when it comes to Eric and/or Uxio.
  • Cruel to Be Kind: Cody when he argued that if David hadn't come back for him, he would've stayed safe.
  • Curse: A titular plot point. Lalin is rumored to have a mysterious curse that has something to do with the demonic entities that reside there.
  • Curtains Match the Windows: David, Tobias, Lucia, Jessica and Mateo all apply, more or less.
  • Cute Little Fangs: Cody has these even outside his reptilian form, serving as one of the earliest signs of his true form.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: Cody's disguise consists entirely of black and dark brown - along with a frightening mask - and he has nothing but the best intentions.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Felix in a nutshell.
Felix: What do you want me to say, David? "Hey guys, my heart is messed up. I could die any moment from now, yay!!"
  • Deathglare: From Cody to David when the latter didn't stay at the hiding spot, and a few from Felix like in Episode 23 (at Uxio, and reciprocated) and Episode 40 (at David).
  • Defense Mechanism Superpower: Both times that David's telekinesis awoke was while he was defending himself from "Beanpole".
  • Demonic Possession: What happened to "David" in Felix's dream in Episode 21.
  • Despair Event Horizon: David hit this when he was 12 – after months of merciless bullying – to the point where he nearly committed suicide.
  • Destructive Savior: David and Cody.
  • Disproportionate Retribution: In response to Cody sabotaging their kidnapping scheme and breaking his leg, "Beanpole" brutally tortures him in Episode 28.
  • Distressed Dude: David from Episodes 16-19, what with him getting assaulted by kidnappers before Cody intervened. Funnily enough, they basically switched places from Episode 20 onwards.
  • Driven to Suicide:
    • A few episodes hint that this happened to David until it was confirmed in Episode 21 during a flashback/dream.
    • Implied with Cody, who outright states in Episode 37 that he wishes he was dead, though there’s yet to be confirmation that he’s tried to go through with it.
  • Driving Question: What is the curse of Lalin? What does it have to do with David? Why is Uxio and his crew so bent on testing him and similar kids? What is Arhiel's role in all this? Too many to list.
  • Don't Go in the Woods: Cody and Jessica both warn against going into the woods because of how dangerous it is. The gang doesn't listen, and sure enough they end up finding a disembodied hand and having "Beanpole" stalk them.
  • Downer Ending: Season 1 ends with Arhiel’s surprise debut, which spells huge trouble for Felix (and possibly his friends) considering the horrific flashback he had of her prior to that scene.
  • Dude, Not Funny!: "Beanpole" seemed more than pleased when the Chief gave him permission to torture Cody. Kris didn’t feel the same way.
  • Dying Smirk: "Smee" dies with a self-satisfied smile, having broken Cody's moral at the very end.
    "Smee": No killing huh? Hypocrite...
  • Dysfunction Junction: Oh boy, to elaborate is to write essays, so to be succinct as possible:
    • David was bullied to near suicide and has dangerous people out to get him for his strange powers.
    • Felix has an unexplained heart problem that could kill him at any moment, as well as an abusive mom who did God-knows-what to him.
    • Cody hates himself for being a half-blood reptilian, as well as the fact that he's killed a man.
    • Tobias's family split apart some time ago and now he's forced to watch his mom struggle with alcoholism. He's also implied to have an inferiority complex.
    • Word of God states that Eric has a dead brother and 'not good' parents.
    • Maria inexplicably lives on her own (in a really run-down house) and is directly involved with Esteban and Uxio's organization.
  • Eldritch Abomination: The demon targeting David and Felix takes on some pretty horrifying forms, especially within their dreams.
  • Eldritch Location: The spirit world from Episode 9. It looks just like the real world but much gloomier and otherworldly, with a purple sky, falling pink lights, strange animalistic entities roaming around, and more.
  • Establishing Character Moment: David's debut showed him stargazing, taking down notes about constellations, UFOs and aliens.
  • Evil Is Not Well-Lit: The mysterious organization meets up at night in a dark motel room.
  • Exactly What It Says on the Tin: A story that takes place in the allegedly cursed town Lalin is called, shocker, Lalin's Curse.
  • Exhausted Eye Bags: David was unable to fall back asleep after his experiences in the not so dreamy world in Episode 9, so was stuck with these for the next few episodes.
  • Extremely Short Timespan: Every event from Episodes 10-45 takes place within the same day.
    • Not counting the first half of Episode 21 (which was a dream), and Episodes 33-37 (which mainly consisted of flashbacks).
  • Eye Motifs: A lot of the supernatural imagery revolves around eyes: the series logo/Arhiel's neck tattoo, the demonic entities all having multiple eyes, David, Cody and Felix all having eyes that can glow certain colors, the Holy Mary statue in Episode 0 crying blood, and so forth. In fact, Word of God confirms that the "mal de ojo" (evil eye) will be of importance later in the story.
  • Eyes Do Not Belong There: A common feature of this story's demons is how they have sinister red eyes all over their faces/bodies.
  • Flower Motifs: Sunflowers for David. They symbolize faithfulness, loyalty, happiness and optimism, fitting both David as a person and his overall association with light/the sun.
  • Formerly Friendly Family: Implied with Arhiel and Felix. The fact that Felix and David grew up together, and Felix’s flashback in Episode 45 showed that he was no younger than 12, imply that there was a time when Arhiel was at least outwardly civil, and got along with her and David’s family.
  • Four-Temperament Ensemble: Out of the main five:
    • David is eclectic.
    • Felix is choleric.
    • Tobias is phlegmatic.
    • Cody is melancholic.
    • Eric is sanguine.
  • Freudian Trio: David is Id (emotional and idealistic), Felix is Superego (skeptical and blunt), and Tobias is Ego (sensible and mediating).
  • Friendship Trinket: David, Felix and Tobias all wear purple friendship bracelets made by Tobi himself.
  • Ghastly Ghost: The spirit in Episode 0 that haunted Monica and eventually pushed her off a high ledge.
  • Ghibli Hills: Lalin is a rural town located in Northern Spain, so exuberant forests, pristine rivers and crops fields of sunflowers and wheat show up pretty often. Thanks to Isaky's incredible skill this often elevates to Scenery Porn, for example Episode 20.
  • Girlish Pigtails: Noemi has these.
  • Good Parents: Veronica is shown to be very affectionate towards both David and Felix, and Mateo and Julen both immediately came to the station once they heard what happened to their sons.
    • Averted with Arhiel, who hurt her son to the point that he now despises her and all things supernatural
    • Relatively little is know about Jessica and Tobias exact dynamic and how much the former's alcoholism affects it, but she definitely cares enough about Tobias to warn him about the forest disappearances and constantly advice him to stay out of danger, even if she's a bit strict about it.
  • Gory Discretion Shot:
    • Most of the torture Cody goes through in Episodes 28-29 happens off-screen.
    • Subverted in Episode 33. We never actually see "Smee" kill and eat his victim but we do see him holding her disembodied hand, a huge chunk of it already eaten off.
  • Go-to-Sleep Ending: The Season 1 finale has David and Felix go to bed after a hard day.
  • The Glomp: Three of these in Episode 37 to make up for all the heartbreak that preceded it.
  • Goes Horribly Wrong: The boys’ investigation of the crime scene in Episodes 4-6 ended with them finding a rotting hand.
  • Green and Mean: "Beanpole" wears a mostly green hoodie and is - to put it simply - a bastard.
  • Hair-Contrast Duo:
    • Blonde-haired David, who is a lot more optimistic and outgoing than dark-haired, sarcastic and cynical Felix.
      • Also contrasts Tobias with auburn hair, and a calmer/more logical disposition
    • Maria (ginger, energetic and childish) and Lucia (brunette, calm and mature).
  • Haunted House: While it's unclear exactly what type of building Monica went into in Episode 0, there's no question there's a spiteful spirit residing there. It breaks mirrors, creates illusions to confuse and horrify Monica, then ultimately pushes her off a high ledge with the possible intention of killing her.
  • Healing Hands:
    • It's revealed in Episode 24 that David is capable of healing himself. It was hinted at in earlier episodes when he supposedly healed Felix's injection wound and even his broken computer.
    • Easy to miss, but the injury Felix gives Rafael in Episode 27 is mysteriously gone just seconds after Rafael puts his other hand over it.
  • Hellish Pupils:
    • Cody’s slit pupils are another early sign of his true nature, but in his case they don't add to a villainous vibe.
    • Arhiel has cat-like pupils and is pretty reprehensible.
  • Heroic B So D: Naturally, his reptilian nature and the murder in the forest took a huge toll on Cody’s self-esteem and mental health. He tells David and Maria in Episode 37 how he hates himself for what he is and what he did and how he wishes he was dead.
  • Hidden Agenda Villain: It's yet to be revealed what exactly Uxio, Arhiel and their associates are looking for and why, but it has to do with David and other kids like him.
  • Hidden Depths:
    • Cody’s introduction makes him out to be an innocent boy who means no harm. The hints start piling up until Episode 15 reveals that he is a reptilian, and Episode 33 reveals that he is the same ‘murdering demon’ from TV.
    • In Kris's debut, she's shown cruelly attacking Felix and David, and later manhandling Cody while he was unconscious. Episode 28 is the first to show that she doesn’t actually enjoy her job (at least not to the same extent as "Beanpole")
    • Similar to Cody, Maria starts off all cute and unassuming, but is later revealed to be directly involved with Esteban and Uxio's organization. The exacts reasons as to why she's part of it and why she's currently working against them, however, are yet to be revealed.
  • Hot-Blooded: Felix tends to get aggressive over little things, and being separated from David doesn’t help matters. He becomes violent and irrational to the point that he attacks Rafael with a knife.
  • Hypno Pendulum: Esteban uses this on David in Episode 40.
  • I Did What I Had to Do: Cody was justified in murdering "Smee" in a moment of self-defense, since otherwise he would've most likely killed Cody first and continued his cannibalistic rampage. This, however, doesn't stop Cody from feeling an immense amount of guilt over it.
  • In a Single Bound: Cody is shown to be capable of jumping several kilometers off a fence and leaping down from a tree with no damage whatsoever.
  • Indy Ploy: David and Maria had to use one in Episode 29 in an attempt to rescue Cody. It doesn’t end all that well.
  • Instant Sedation: It took just a couple seconds for the sedative Kris gave Felix to knock him out.
    • Averted with Cody. Thanks to his reptilian status and the fact that he didn't receive a full dose, he stayed active for several more minutes before the drug finally took effect.
  • Interrupted Suicide: As revealed in DELETE and Episode 21, Felix was the one who saved David at the bridge.
  • I Will Find You: Felix and Tobias both become determined to find David once they realize he'd gone missing.
  • I Work Alone: Cody didn’t tell anyone about his vigilante act, doing everything by himself.
  • Jade-Colored Glasses: It's heavily implied that Arhiel's abuse is the reason behind Felix's cynicism, stubborn denial of the supernatural and even his heart problems.
  • Jerkwith A Heart Of Gold: To call it gold is a stretch but at least Kris thinks torturing a child is too much, unlike "Beanpole".
  • Just in Time: In Episode 18, Cody finally arrived just before "Beanpole"could inject David with the tranquilizing serum.
  • Let's Get Dangerous!: David and Maria mutually agree to go up against Cody's highly dangerous captors in an attempt to save him.
  • Light Is Good: David is a loving kid who possesses bright, glowing eyes and a glowing dream form that lights up the mostly gloomy spirit world from Episode 9.
  • Losing a Shoe in the Struggle: Technically right before the struggle, but after David throws his slipper in Felix's face for scaring him, he's unable to get it back for the rest of the season due to "Beanpole" and Kris attacking them.
  • Mark of the Supernatural: David and Felix's glowing eyes, Cody, "Beanpole" and Kris's red eyes and scales (as well as horns and a tail for Cody specifically), and Arhiel's strange neck tattoo.
  • Medium Blending: Episode 0 features the only animated gifs in the comic.
  • Mirror Scare: The ghost from Episode 0 slams a handprint on the mirror right next to Monica's head, making it shatter explosively.
  • Missing Mom: Up until her official debut at the very end of Season 1, Arhiel was absent except for a brief picture of her in Episode 23.
  • Mood Whiplash: A running gag at this point.
    • Episode 5 has the boys casually investigating the crime scene, and then suddenly find a rotting hand.
    • Episode 29 has David and Maria having a calm conversation about what to do next just before being interrupted by the sound of Cody screaming in pain.
    • In Episode 31, Cody’s flashback is briefly interrupted by David and Maria asking him about his ability to talk to animals, attributing him to Snow White.
    • Episode 37 goes back and forth from Cody telling the rest of his heartbreaking story, to him sharing a group hug with David and Maria, to that group hug being interrupted by "Beanpole" finding them in the freezer.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Though it was entirely deserved, Cody was devastated after he killed "Smee", thinking himself to be just as bad as "Smee".
  • My Greatest Failure:
    • Despite David's forgiveness, Felix still deeply regrets contributing to the bullying that drove David to suicide.
    • The murder in the woods took a massive toll on Cody's wellbeing. In fact, he seems to consider his entire existence to be a failure, hating himself for being a 'monster' and needing to eat humans.
  • Neat Freak: Felix can’t stand messy places and does a lot of cleaning around his house.
  • Nervous Tics: David bites the skin around his fingers, Cody tugs on his hair, Maria pulls her hair over her face and Tobias holds his elbows.
  • Nervous Wreck:
    • Cody is initially portrayed as this, getting extremely anxious over the thought of investigating a murder scene. Later turns out he had much bigger reasons for that than ‘it sounds dangerous.’
    • Downplayed with Tobias. He's level-headed most of the time but is still quick to worry and can be rather emotional, for example both of the times that David disappeared.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero:
    • David quite literally breaks several items all over his house when his powers first activated and caused a mini earthquake in Episode 18.
    • Cody’s main goal was to defeat the murderous reptilian preying on unknowing women, but his good intentions end with him losing his hand, murdering the guy, and contributing to the town’s fear of a curse.
    • In Episode 25, Tobias insists on leaving the motel, claiming it to be a waste of time. This results in a struggle between him and Felix that ends with a broken glass and their cover blown.
  • Nice Mean And In Between: David, Felix and Tobias respectively.
  • Nightmare Face:
    • The demon from Episodes 9 and 21 literally plagues David and Felix’s nightmares – and has the right face for the job.
    • Cody looks very frightening both with his mask on and when he's angry.
  • No Indoor Voice: Eric is very loud, especially when he gets excited.
  • Non-Human Sidekick:
    • The Blue Morpho, a strange butterfly that follows David around and is constantly present when something supernatural happens.
    • Arhiel's pet cat, who she tasks with following and watching Felix as seen in Episode 4 and 45.
  • No-Respect Guy: Zigzagged with David. Though he has a group of friends that openly like and defend him, David doesn’t get that same respect from his classmates (In Episode 12 Beatriz and Miriam made fun of his ‘weird stories’) and it’s noted in his bio that most people don’t take him seriously. It was even worse two years prior when he got horribly and consistently bullied by a group of his classmates, including Felix.
  • Not a Morning Person: David in Episode 2 and 10 (the latter case is more understandable, given the kind of nightmare he had prior).
  • Older Than They Look: Eric is really tall for his age, but ironically is one of the most childish people in the group.
  • Ominous Knocking: David hears this at the abandoned shed in Episode 2. Felix insists it was just the rain and/or David's vivid imagination playing tricks on him, but it was, indeed, a demon watching them.
  • Omniscient Council of Vagueness: The unknown members of Uxio's organization all have half their faces concealed in shadows and none of their names mentioned.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business:
    • David completely loses his cool with Cody in Episode 13 and calls him an asshole in front of the whole class.
      • Cody himself was acting strangely apprehensive prior to this, though it’s later revealed that he only did this to stop David from finding out his secret.
    • Maria is usually hyperactive and emotional, so readers were quick to pick up on how relatively calm she was during the "Save Cody" arc. Turns out she’s part of Uxio’s organization and already knows about most of that stuff.
    • Esteban – normally calm and serious – panics upon seeing the mysterious girl from Episode 44 and abruptly ends the dream.
    • We've seen Tobias get annoyed before but he was especially angry when Felix accused him of not caring about David when he didn't think stalking Uxio was a good idea.
  • Parental Substitute: Mateo and Veronica are basically Felix's second set of parents, what with Arhiel being gone and Julen often too busy with work and financially unstable to care for Felix himself.
  • Pink Is Feminine: Selena wears a lot of pink and has the most feminine design out of all the main girls.
  • Pointy-Haired Boss: Uxio.
  • Power Incontinence: David’s telekinesis usually activates when he feels threatened, so he's had a few moments where he's accidentally broken things as a result. He's yet to fully figure out how to control it, or even that the powers only work when his eyes are open.
  • Pumpkin Person: Played for laughs when David tells Maria about his 'shiny eyes'.
Maria: You mean like a pumpkin head?
David: What kind of comparison is that?!
  • Rage Breaking Point:
    • In Episode 13, David tried to keep calm when Cody shut down his theories but it didn't take long for him to snap.
    • Felix’s anger and frustration about David's disappearance that'd been building up since Episode 22 finally explodes in Episode 27 when Rafael and Tobias both try to calm him down.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: Glowing red eyes are a common factor for reptilians.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni:
    • Both design and personality-wise, David's red while Felix is blue.
      • With Tobias, however, both of them are more red while Tobias is their blue.
    • Eric and Cody (ironic, since their color motifs are the other way round).
    • Maria and Lucia, respectively.
  • Rescue Reversal: Shortly after Cody saves David from "Beanpole" and Kris’s attacks and carries him to safety, David finds him getting carried away from Kris and opts to follow them. After discovering Cody’s identity and arriving at the abandoned house, David and Maria hear Cody’s screams and decide to go save him rather than just going home. Naturally Cody isn't happy that his efforts were in vain.
  • Running Gag: David saying something along the lines ‘I hope [name] is okay’, and then the story cutting right to that very person being not okay, as seen in Episodes 26 and 29. Cody also does this in Episode 33.
  • Sadist: "Beanpole" got an uncomfortable amount of satisfaction from torturing Cody.
  • Self-Harm:
    • Cody deliberately scratches himself to make a trail of blood to mislead "Beanpole" in Episode 31.
    • David attempts to cut his hand in Episode 45 to prove his healing ability to Felix, but naturally Felix was quick to stop him.
  • Ship Tease: Between David and Tobias/Cody/Maria.
  • Shorter Means Smarter: Along with Tobias and Cody, David is the shortest of the main five and is arguably one of, if not the, most intelligent.
  • Shout-Out: Episode 7 features cameos of Dani and Dorian from Hooky and Sonia from Supersonic Girl.
  • Sinister Silhouettes:
    • How Cody looks when the forest murder is first mentioned.
    • Some of the spirits seen in Episode 9.
  • The Slacker: Eric and Felix are both noted to be really clever boys who are too lazy to do much with that intelligence. In Felix's case, he has to take it easy because any kind of physical over-exertion triggers his heart problems.
  • Smart People Wear Glasses: Played with when it comes to Tobias. He's (currently) the only bespectacled kid in the whole group, and while he's smart in terms of being responsible, mature and logical, it's implied that he doesn't do all too well academically.
  • Solomon Divorce:invoked Word of God states that Tobias has an older brother who currently lives elsewhere with their dad, while he stays in Lalin with their mom.
  • Sore Loser: "Beanpole" doesn't take too kindly to losing a fight against Cody.
  • Spirit World: Where David seems to be in Episode 9. It's a parallel of the real world, but full of strange supernatural entities, such as shadowy humanoids that could be ghosts.
  • Strict Parents Make Sneaky Kids: Downplayed with Jessica and Tobias - Jessica often advices Tobias to stay away from dangerous places/situations and doesn't take kindly to his disobedience. Meanwhile Tobias, though he's still pragmatic and knows when to take responsibility, has a tendency to get carried away with his friends' antics even when it goes against his mom's wishes. In fact, he outright steals the scale Jessica found in the forest just to show it to his friends.
  • Stronger Than They Look:
    • Cody is the epitome of this. His first appearance makes him come off as meek and unassuming but from Episode 15 onwards it’s revealed that not only is he a reptilian, but he's also very powerful and capable of throwing grown adults, leaping high off fences, and carrying two people long distance while under the effect of a sedative.
    • David too, given how he was able to carry Felix in Episode 18 with surprising ease. And that’s without considering the supernatural powers he holds.
    • Assuming the first half of Episode 21 was entirely accurate to the past, Felix being able to hold David’s dangling body for so long was also impressive.
  • Super-Hearing: Cody seems to have this, seeing how in Episode 15 his ear twitched when he overheard "Beanpole" ’s entire conversation through the closed window of a van he wasn't that close to.
  • Supernatural Gold Eyes: David's eyes glow bright amber whenever he feels strong emotions and/or uses his powers.
  • Talking Down the Suicidal: What Felix tries to do in Episode 21, but understandably David wasn’t having any of it.
Felix: David! You don’t need to do this! We can talk!
David: You want to talk now?! After all you did?
  • Tears of Blood: Seen on the Holy Mary statue in Episode 0.
  • Took a Level in Badass: After witnessing a brutal murder, Cody becomes determined to prevent any more from happening, patrolling the forest at night in hopes of catching and stopping the murderer. Even though the ordeal left him horribly injured and traumatized, Cody still retained his protectiveness and desire to use his abilities to protect anyone who needs it.
  • Trauma Button: For David, Eric telling him he won't get anywhere by being a coward unfortunately triggered memories of the bullying he experienced as a 12-year-old.
  • Undying Loyalty: Even after finding out that Cody committed murder and has eaten people in the past, David refused to believe that he was a monster and insisted that since he saved some people (David included), he’s still a good person.
  • Universal Group Reaction: The entire gang was shocked at Cody's sudden outburst in Episode 5.
  • Unskilled, but Strong: David has no idea how to properly control his telekinetic powers yet but damn do they still hit hard.
  • Waking Up Elsewhere: Felix was drugged at David's house in Episode 18, then woke up under the bridge in Episode 21 after Cody carried him there.
  • Wham Line: In Episode 15 when Cody decides to follow the van and his reptilian form is fully confirmed.
    Cody: Let's make it worse!
  • What Beautiful Eyes!: Glowing or not, David's eyes are rather pretty.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Tobias reprimands David for yelling at Cody the way he did in Episode 13, but seems to regret it shortly after.
  • Whole Episode Flashback:
    • Episodes 34-36 tell us about how Cody killed a man.
    • Subverted with Episodes 14, 21 and 37, where only majority of each episode was a flashback.
  • Would Hurt a Child:
    • "Beanpole" and Kris are both willing to hurt David, Felix and Cody just to get their job done – except Kris seems to have actual boundaries with it (torturing is too far) while "Beanpole" is yet to show any qualms.
    • Based on a flashback in Episode 45, Arhiel once restrained Felix with demonic tendrils for unknown reasons.
  • Wounded Gazelle Gambit: How the demon lured David in Episode 9: posing as a helpless spirit.
Demon: After so much time...and you are still so naive.

  • You Are Better Than You Think: In Episode 37, when Cody calls himself a monster, and David reminds him that he saved people’s lives, so he’s still a good person.
David: You’re still Cody to me.
