Works that reference the Devil May Cry series in pop culture.

Anime and Manga

Fan Works

  • Infinity Train: Seeker of Crocus: Lexi shouts to Alighieri, described as a gryphon dragon, "Oh flock off, feather face!", a reference to Dante's one-liner to Griffon in the first game.

Literature

  • The King's Avatar: Li Xuan's account "Crying Devil" is a reference to Devil May Cry.

Music

  • Big Bad Bosses: As a form of Take That!, one of Sephy's verses in "I'm The Boss" says he has a bone to pick with "all generic demon lords", and throws a sword at a poster of Nelo Angelo.

Video Game

  • A Hat in Time: The Blood Moon outfit gives Hat Kid a red and black palette with white hair which is the same as Dante and Ragna the Bloodedge.
  • Ace Attorney: Trials and Tribulations Case 3 manages to get in three references all within the same scene, assuming all topics are explored and a wrong item is presented. One of them points to DMC:
    Maya: "This is madness!"
Phoenix: No, Maya, that is SPARDA.."
  • Afterimage: Renee can learn the "Judgement Cut" weapon skill for the Blade-type (katana) weapons. By its name and weapon association, it's a reference to Vergil's signature charged attack "Judgement Cut" (or "Judgment Cut") with his katana Yamato in the Devil May Cry franchise, though the "Judgment Cut" of this game has a different animation than Vergil's. The more blatant Devil May Cry Vergil reference however is shown near the endgame. Red Renee can perform a powerful attack at low health which involves unsheating the katana, followed by a Flash Step, multiple huge slashes appearing all over the screen, then ending with dramatically sheating the weapon as the boss has their back turned from you. It's a replica or homage to Vergil's "Judgement Cut End" from Devil May Cry 4 and Devil May Cry 5, albeit all the visual effects are colored red to match Red Renee's theme instead of Vergil's blue.
  • Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney: Klavier clinches his status as an Expy of Dante with this line.
Klavier: Not so fast. This party's just getting started!
  • Astro's Playroom: SSD Speedway features bots cosplaying as Dante and Jester.
  • Bayonetta series:
    • Four of Luka's supposed past flingsnote  have some... familiar names: Claire, Trish, and Silvia, and Ammy.
    • The development team named themselves "Team Little Angels" as a reference to their spiritual predecessors, Team Little Devils.
    • Luka's father is named Antonio Redgrave. "Tony Redgrave" is Dante's alias from the prequel novel of the first Devil May Cry game, which is also inscribed on his guns, Ebony & Ivory.
    • One of the demonic beasts you can summon is a reference to Phantom from Devil May Cry 1. Both happen to be giant demonic spiders filled with lava. Oddly enough, it's portrayed in almost the opposite way; this demon is one of only two demons referred to positively. It is described as curious, rare, and willing to offer treasures or rare knowledge to those who find it, as opposed to the others which are for the most part, described as brutal monstrosities.
    • Before Bayonetta fights the series' first proper boss, Fortitudo, she tosses out a couple of Dante's most famous lines.
      "Flock off, feather-face!"
    • She speaks another one of Dante's lines before taking on Iustitia.
      "Let's rock, baby!"
    • Enzo shares his name with Enzo Ferino, an offscreen Devil May Cry character who Dante owes money to.
    • The "Bracelet of Time" accessory, which lets you trigger Witch Time on command, is a reference to a similarly-named "Bangle of Time" that appears in the original Devil May Cry and serves a nearly-identical purpose (halting enemies while letting Dante move freely). The description itself reads "Eva, a truly extraordinary witch, entered into contract with a legendary dark knight, and then faced the amassed armies of Inferno," which references the marriage contract between Dante's mother Eva and his father, the Legendary Dark Knight Sparda.
    • The "Immortal Marionette" accessory is designed after the enemy mooks from the original Devil May Cry, specifically the red-clad "Bloody Mari" variant. When equipped, combo attacks will be easier to activate (just like the "Easy Automatic" settings of the Devil May Cry games), but it will reduce the combo points earned by half when used in Hard or Non-Stop Infinite Climax difficulties.
    • Grace & Glory's intro cutscene looks a lot like when the Frosts were introduced during Mission 17 in Devil May Cry 1.
    • The bonus weapons for completing the game on any difficulty, the "Handguns" (non-magical counterparts of Bayonetta's Scarborough Fair) look similar to the guns used by characters from the Devil May Cry series; specifically, the hand set look like Dante's own Ebony & Ivory, and the heel set look like Luce & Ombra, the guns used by Dante's father Sparda (and later on, Trish). This may also be a subtle Take That! to the DMC series after Hideki Kamiya's departure from the franchise, since these guns are the weakest weapons in the game, being incapable of channeling magic and being referred to by Bayonetta as "cheap toys" in the first game and "on sale" in the sequel.
    • Rodin Turns Red partway through the fight, his visage looking very similar to the Devil Trigger concept in Devil May Cry.
    • The demons in Inferno drop life essence in the form of red orbs, which have the same monetary value as halos. Red Orbs are the common currency in the DMC games.
    • The angels share some major similarities with Mundus, the Big Bad of the first Devil May Cry, being physically horrific masses of flesh, tentacles and eyes encased in bodies that resemble divine statues. The Cardinal Virtues in particular, show off some grisly detail when you damage them enough.
    • When performing a Torture Attack on an angel lying on the ground, the playable character will usually flatten them with a tombstone initialized "DMC".
    • The final boss, Jubileus, is a reimagining of The Savior from Devil May Cry 4, which Kamiya admits using as inspiration for this game. Not only is Jubileus an Expy of The Savior, the late-game plot of Bayonetta is also similar to that of DMC4 - Both are giant statues of deified figures (Sparda and Jubileus), controlled by a mad cultist priest (Sanctus and Father Balder) who belongs to some angelic organization (The Order of the Sword and the Lumen Sages), and a Damsel in Distress important to the player character (Kyrie and Jeanne). The main protagonist of both games (Nero and Bayonetta) are also absorbed into the statues, but are saved by the Deuteragonist (Dante and Jeanne). In both cases, the final phase of the fight begins after said damsel is saved by the protagonist, when the cult leader gains full control of the damaged remains of the statue, and both are beaten once and for all when said cultist is utterly destroyed in some way (obliterating The Savior's upper body and kicking Jubileus into the sun).
    • Rodin says "Let's get this party started! Shit's about to get real." when you've bought the Platinum Ticket required for initiating the boss fight.
    • The Release Date trailer of Bayonetta 3 has a scene where Bayonetta knocks on Phantasmaraneae's face. It's an identical re-enactment of a cutscene from the first Devil May Cry game where Dante also knocked on Phantom's face.
  • BlazBlue: Word of God says that Ragna The Bloodedge was inspired by Heine from the manga Dogs: Bullets & Carnage, with additional inspiration from Dante and Cloud. Blonde/White-Haired Guy with big sword in red trench coat has a brother in a blue coat with katana. Sound familiar? Bonus points in that they have similar personalities to their respective counterparts.
  • Brütal Legend: After dealing the final blow in the first boss fight, Eddie remembers the appropriate Catchphrase.
    Eddie: Bingo! I mean, Jackpot!
  • Chaos Code: Cerberus Black's P2 color makes him look like Dante, while his P3 color makes him look like Vergil.
  • DNF Duel: As if the comparisons between the male Gunner and Dante weren't prevalent enough, the Ranger possesses an altered version of his Scud Genocide Awakening where he simply performs the twisting aerial gunshots from the end of the move but aimed downward, making the move heavily resemble Dante's Rainstorm attack. He'll even yell "Raining bullets!" in English, regardless of the current voice language, as Dante prominently did in Devil May Cry 5. In addition, his generic revolvers have been recolored so that he wields a black revolver with a white grip and a white revolver with a black grip, a possible reference to Dante's signature guns Ebony and Ivory.
  • Dragon's Dogma:
    • When creating your Arisen and Main Pawn, you can name them whatever you wish; however, you must then select a second name from a list of "monikers," which is the name that will appear online if the name you've chosen has been blocked by another player's console's parental controls. The list of monikers that you can select includes names from many of Capcom's other games, including Chun-Li, M. Bison, Dante, Asura, and Magnus.
    • The "Blink Strike/Burst Strike" sword skills are similar to Dante's "Stinger".
  • Dungeon Fighter Online: Beef him up a little and give him a sword, and the Male Gunner is essentially Dante. One of the avatar costume sets for Male Gunners is even named "Devil Trigger".
  • Dynasty Warriors 7: Guo Jia's second costume is black and red leather with white hair, just like Dante.
  • Eternal Fighter Zero: Makoto Sawatari's "Ground Strafing" super has her firing two guns in midair, as a reference to a similar move by Dante.
  • Etrian Odyssey IV: One of the Nightseekers' palette swaps looks like a long-haired Dante.
  • Final Fantasy XIV: During the fight with Yojimbo at the end of the Even Further Adventures of Hildibrand, right before he reveals himself as Gilgamesh, he says "The time has come, and so have I!"
  • Genshin Impact:
    • Some of Kamisato Ayaka's moves are inspired by Vergil. Most notably, her charged attack, a single slash that turns into several smaller slashes in front of her, is performed in a way that resembles Vergil's Judgement Cut in the Special Edition of Devil May Cry 4.
    • Similarly to Ayaka, the Raiden Shogun's playstyle has drawn several comparisons to Vergil. This is especially shown in the second phase of her rematch where she draws her sword as one of her attacks is a near-identical replica of Vergil's signature Judgment Cut and her strongest attack, the Musou no Hitotachi looks visually similar to Vergil's Judgment Cut End. Also, the Sword Beams she fires resemble Vergil's Drive attack when using Force Edge.
  • Girls' Frontline: The different finishes on M1911's pistols are a reference to Devil May Cry, Dante's trademark pistols being heavily customized M1911s. It's made more apparent with her MOD3, where she switches hands with her guns to match Dante's, holding the blued one with her left hand and the nickel-plated one with her right.
  • God Hand: Azel's Leitmotif is named "Devil May Sly".
  • Honkai Impact 3rd:
    • An interview with miHoYo's president, Forrest Wei Liu, confirmed that Devil May Cry and Bayonetta were two classic action games that served as gameplay inspirations for HI3... And it shows in this game's movesets. There are even compilation videos on the Internet that highlight the similar animations and moves (such as these).
    • A good number of Sakura's techniques are lifted from Vergil's. For example, the Charged Attack of her Goushinnso Memento battlesuit is almost an exact replica of Vergil's iconic Iaijutsu move from the Special Edition of Devil May Cry 4.
    • The "protagonist" of Post-Honkai Odyssey has his sword movements resembling Nero, but with his right hand instead of Nero's left. His sword also resembles Red Queen.
    • Some of the Valkyries' skill names are references to other media. Lightning Empress, for instance, has a skill named "Dragon May Cry".
    • Siegfried Kaslana is a dead ringer for Dante - the hair, the Badass Longcoat, the use of two guns and a BFS, the lecherousness, the laid-back attitude, the fondness for pizza, and the ability to turn into a half-demonic form. Like Dante, he gets his half-demonic form through getting impaled by his own sword.
    • In Chapter 25, a certain character gains a Next Tier Power-Up by fusing with the remnants of her "role model", the newfound power allows her to freely summon a special BFS in her hands (while also still wielding guns), she gains access to a Launcher Move and aerial attacks, one of her attacks in her new form creates an exploding black hole, and she has a "rival" character who wields a Japanese sword. Oh, and she has white hair too. This describes both Dante in Devil May Cry 5 and Kiana as Herrscher of Flamescion.
  • The title of Kitty May Cry, as a bit of Shout-Out Theme Naming. The two games have zilch in common, save for two letters in the title.
  • League of Legends Samira's creators have listed many inspirations for her character, but the one she most obviously resembles is Dante, from the Stylish Action-inspired fighting style (complete with a combo-based grading system, itself called Style to parallel DMC's "Stylish Rank"), to wielding a sword and a pair of handguns (one black and one white), to having an ability called Inferno Trigger (not to be confused with Dante's "Devil Trigger"), to even directly quoting several of his catchphrases.
    Samira: Jackpot.
  • Megadimension Neptunia VII: C-Sha is the Gold Third who loves fighting the most, even using Dante's famous "This is what I live for! I'm absolutely crazy about it!" quote in the fight to recruit her during the third arc when she's at 50% health.
  • Mobile Legends: Bang Bang: Alucard is inspired by Dante of Devil May Cry fame. In fact, his very first model has red coat and white hair and named Dante, until Moonton modified him to not look like him too much, and changed the name to Alucard. Ironically, this kind of made him look more similar to Nero, but with enough differences.
  • Monster Hunter: World: Event quest materials can be used to make armor based on Dante. Palicos also have their own cosplay armors, and they can also dress as Dante. There's even a Charge Blade based on both Force Edge and Alastor.
  • Mortal Kombat 11: One of Fujin's cosmetic items slicks back his hair and makes it pointy, making him resemble Vergil from the Devil May Cry series. During a Developers' breakdown video of his Gameplay Reveal, one of the MK11 devs even noted Fujin was "motivated", referencing a Vergil-related meme.
  • Ōkami: Waka shouts "Let's rock, baby!" when you first face him.
  • Onechanbara: Kagura is a very Stripperific expy of DMC3 Dante. A Half-Human Hybrid (Dhampyr in this case) that's young, snarky, taunts, and likes to show off. It fits the bill.
  • Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – Dual Destinies: Trucy suggests that Phoenix and Apollo form a comedy team called Agni & Rudra, referencing the Dual Boss from DMC3.
  • Punishing: Gray Raven: Alpha's Iaijutsu moves and animations are inspired by Vergil. This eventually evolved into an Ascended Meme for P:GR - invokedThe overlapping playerbase between P:GR and the Devil May Cry series has led to certain Vergil-related memes and nicknames being used on Alpha. This includes calling her "Vergil's Daughter" (which resulted from some meme trend within the anime/gacha game fans of the Devil May Cry community where any anime girl who fights using Iaijutsu and/or directly copies Vergil's moves and effects get labeled as his "Daughter"). Kuro Game has noticed the trend and when Crimson Weave Alpha was released, they implemented a game emote depicting her sitting in a plastic chair, referencing the "Vergil Chair" meme spawned from Devil May Cry 5.
  • Power Rangers: Battle for the Grid: As a form of Actor Allusion, the Quantum Ranger (voiced by Dan Southworth) says "Foolishness, Lord Zedd" and "I need more Quantum power!" Tagging him in also has him say "I'm motivated!"
  • Resident Evil 4 (Remake): During his second boss fight, Krauser paraphrases a line from another of Capcom's power-obsessed antagonists:
Krauser: Strength is everything. The weak can protect nothing! note
  • Resident Evil 7: Biohazard: One of the DLCs adds a mode called "Ethan Must Die".
  • Sengoku Basara: The characters can wield weapons from the first Devil May Cry game, with Masamune wielding six Alastors, Yukimura Dual Wielding Sparda and Ifrit and Nohime using Ebony and Ivory.
  • Singled Out: The achievements for beating a certain level are named after works with "Level" instead of "Devil". The most obvious one is "Level May Cry".
  • Super Smash Bros.: Bayonetta has a Palette Swap based on Jeanne, who's own colors match her spiritual predecessor, Dante.
  • Super Smash Bros. Ultimate: Joker's downward guns that you can fire both on the air and on the ground resemble Dante's Rain Storm.
  • Tales of Crestoria: Vicious is another Dante expy; dual wielding guns, wearing a longcoat with no shirt and surviving being stabbed through the heart. Complete with a cocky and trollish attitude, as well as not even hiding the fact that he's thought of as a bad guy.
  • Teppen (2019): The Devils Awaken expansion as a whole is a Whole-Plot Reference to Devil May Cry 5.
    • The "Awakened Power" and "Battle at the Summit" cards show the moments when Nero unlocks his Devil Trigger and stops Dante and Vergil from killing each other at the end of DMC5.
    • The "Dead Weight" card shows the memetically infamous moment from DMC5 where Dante calls Nero "dead weight" during the first battle with Urizen.
  • The Stars Above: The final weapon of the mod is called "Bury the Light," with the Flavor Text "Now you're motivated."
  • ULTRAKILL:
    • "DevilMayQuake.com" redirects to the game's Steam store page.
    • The game launches with a splash screen disclaimer reading "This game contains scenes of explicit violence and gore", identical to the one Capcom used in the late 90's and early 2000's for M-rated games like Devil May Cry and Resident Evil.
    • The style meter is nearly identical to the one used in DMC, down to the letter-graded Idiosyncratic Combo Levels. It also rewards experimentation, combos, and switching your weapons up.
    • The hardest difficulty is titled "ULTRAKILL Must Die", named after DMC's infamous "Dante Must Die" difficulty.
    • There's a secret Dual Boss in Limbo consisting of two Swordsmachines named Agony and Tundra, suspiciously similar to Agni and Rudra of Devil May Cry 3: Dante's Awakening. There's another secret Dual Boss in Heresy that operates on the same premise, consisting of two Insurrectionists named Angry and Rude.
    • Gabriel is a very transparent homage to Vergil, wielding a holy light themed version of Vergil's summoned swords, and even paraphrasing one of his most iconic taunts:
      Gabriel: Foolishness, machine. Foolishness.
    • Gabriel also is one to Credo, with the angelic design, thrown spears that can be returned for big damage and saying "Behold the power of an angel!"
  • The Wonderful 101: Wonder-Blue is yet another intentional Dante expy; a Hot-Blooded, cocky swordsman with silver locks and a Badass Longcoat. Not surprising considering his creator also made Dante.
  • Viewtiful Joe: Blade Master Alastor is the Anthropomorphic Personification of the sword in DMC1. And boy, is he pissed at Dante for his sucky handling and leaving him during the events of DMC2.
