Resurrection Dawn*
Heroes of the New World is a crossover between One Piece and My Hero Academia, co-written by Zaru and Juubi-K, and co-edited by IKnowNothing and WildJoker000.

Izuku Midoriya manages to defeat All For One, only for the villain to try to take the boy down with him. Though Izuku survives through the actions of another, he is then teleported to the world of One Piece and crash-lands on Onigashima, the base of the mighty Beast Pirates. He is found by Yamato, the daughter-who-identifies-as-a-boy of the crew's captain, Kaido. The two quickly become friends, and Yamato promises to help Izuku escape while Izuku intends to remove the explosive handcuffs placed on Yamato by her father.

From that point on, the pair must keep Izuku's presence a secret, try to steal the key to Yamato's cuffs (which Kaido keeps on his person), and evade a suspicious (and ambitious) enforcer of the fiendish pirate. Unfortunately, this is easier said than done, and it isn't long before other members of the Beast Pirates start noticing the strange young intruder, too...

And that's just the first arc!

Currently standing at 63* chapters and counting, it can be read here on FanFiction.Net, here on SpaceBattles.com, and here on Archive of Our Own.

This fanfic contains examples of:

    Main Story
  • Abhorrent Admirer: Izuku picks up three:
    • Ulti falls hard for Izuku and decides to forcibly make him her boyfriend. While he doesn't necessarily find her unattractive, her behavior scares the living daylights out of him.
    • After escaping Ulti, Izuku finds himself in Who's Who's wing of Onigashima, and Who's Who offers him to one of his subordinates named Xandra. The Cat Girl is tempted but decides Izuku is too young for her, though she is more than eager to "claim" him once he gets a little older.
    • After hearing that Kaido has beef with Izuku, Charlotte Galette decides she wants Izuku for herself. While she hasn't revealed herself to Izuku yet, Galette is a daughter of Big Mom and seems unwilling to take "no" for an answer.
  • Altar Diplomacy: During his debriefing back at Germa Castle, Vinsmoke Judge mentions that Lord Jenner proposed a possible marriage alliance between Doyle and Germa, with Reiju becoming Bach's queen. As interesting as seeing what kind of offspring Reiju could produce, Judge turned him down as he does not see Reiju as a bargaining chip.
  • Agony of the Feet: Upon arriving in the North Blue, Yamato goes exploring and steps on a stonefish while playing on a beach, and would have died had Reiju not shown up and sucked out the poison.
  • Abusive Parent: Kaido to Yamato, as per canon. Kaido is convinced it’s just Tough Love and is genuinely, terrifyingly, devastated when Yamato actually manages to escape from him with Izuku’s help.
  • Adaptational Curves: Compared to her canon counterpart and mostly part to Oda’s art style, Yamato is described to have muscular arms after Izuku takes notice of her ripped sleeves upon meeting at the rendezvous point with the key to her Seastone shackles he retrieved from Kaido who was distracted by Yamato.
  • Adaptational Superpower Change: Bao Huang eats a normal flying squirrel Zoan Devil Fruit in this story instead of a SMILE.
  • Adaptational Wimp: Several characters are shown to be weaker than they are in canon due to the story taking place two years before One Piece officially began- as such, they are younger and less experienced than they are in their official debuts. The two most prominent are Koala (who is on her first mission with the Revolutionary Army and hasn't built enough skill or fortitude to use Fishman Karate's more powerful techniques, contrasting canon where she was a prominent officer who could teach Fishman Karate) and Doll (who is an ensign with a shaky grasp of the Six Powers compared to the Pacifista-smashing Vice Admiral she is in her debut in the Egghead arc).
  • Affably Evil:
    • Who's Who is as brutal as any other Beast Pirate, but he's pretty chill when off-the-clock, and is enough of a Benevolent Boss that his subordinates are willing to aid him when Ulti barges into their territory.
    • Teach/Blackbeard is quick to make friends with Izuku and Yamato, though his true nature as a villain is not yet revealed.
  • All for Nothing: When Kaido learns that Yamato has escaped, he assumes she and Izuku must be somewhere in Wano and orders his crew to tear it apart to find them, inflicting terrible suffering upon the inhabitants in the process. This goes on for two weeks, at which point they finally learn that Izuku can fly, meaning their search was fruitless from the beginning. Kaido takes this about as poorly as expected before he puts a bounty on Izuku.
  • Age-Gap Romance: Nothing more than Ship Tease so far, but Izuku is 17 to Yamato’s 24.
  • Ambiguous Gender: Averted. The narrative explicitly labels Yamato as a woman, though certain characters who address her as Kaido's "son" in canon do so here until after she escapes and Kaido decides to drop the act.
  • Archnemesis Dad: True to canon, Yamato hates Kaido with a passion.
  • Armor-Piercing Attack: Izuku manages to use One For All to punch through Spytand Malice's tekkai AND armament Haki.
  • Armor-Piercing Question: At the end of their duel, Kaido asks Yamato what hope she has of beating Kaido if Kozuki Oden, the man Yamato wishes to become, couldn't do so.
Kaido: If Kozuki Oden, the man you wish to become, couldn't surpass me... what hope do you have as you are?
  • At Least I Admit It: Why Spytand Malice joined the Beast Pirates. They do what they want because they can and don't dress up their misdeeds as "serving justice" like the Marines do.
  • And Then What?:
    • A recurring issue with Reiju after she joins Izuku and Yamato is that she does not know what to do with her newfound freedom. Her initial plan was to get as far away from her father as possible, but where? No idea, and she privately admits she's surprised she got this far. Even sleeping in after a good night of celebration is alien to her and she finds it troubling to be so far off her normal, highly regulated lifestyle under Judge.
    • Izuku asks this of Law after learning he's out to avenge someone close to him (Corazon). Law curtly brushes him off rather than giving him a straight answer.
  • Badass Boast: Izuku gives one to Spytand Malice during their battle that also has the purpose of deceiving Malice about how powerful he really is.
Izuku: Those hits from before were at thirty percent. Just to see what you were capable of. Right now, I'm hovering around... eighty percent.
  • Borrowed Catchphrase: Yamato bellows out a "SMASH!" when clubbing Page One in the face to open her fight against Ulti, and Whitebeard uses "I am here" to cap off his You Are Not Alone speech to recruit Izuku and Yamato to his crew.
  • Big Damn Heroes: Izuku is kidnapped by Ulti, prompting Yamato to feign drunkenness in order to distract her before kicking off a fight that allows Izuku to escape.
  • Big Sister Bully: Ulti physically assaults Page One and, according to him, drives off any girl he tries to get close to.
  • Big Good: Whitebeard takes Izuku and Yamato in following their escape from Wano, and hopes to assist in their plans to liberate Wano after hearing how Kaido abused and murdered Oden, one of Whitebeard's former crew and close friends.
  • Big Eater: While Yamato is the most prominent example, Izuku and the Vestiges note that everyone in their new universe can pack away huge quantities of food compared to their old one.
  • Blood Knight:
    • Spytand Malice internally notes that he lives for death, destruction, and subjugation. He gains pleasure from nothing else.
    • Pretty much all of the Beast Pirates fit this trope, but especially Kaido.
    • Yamato is clearly enjoying her fight with Bandsome, to the point she has to restrain herself because she is forgetting the plan to take down the pirate and thus putting others at risk.
  • Break the Cutie: Izou's constant and harsh rejection of Yamato when she tries to apologize and befriend him begin to wear on the girl, culminating in Izou kicking her full force into a mudslide and then trying to shoot her when Izuku pulls her free, calling her a monster all the while. Yamato is left a sobbing wreck in her cabin afterwards, her dreams of having a fun and accepting adventure like Oden shattered while she weakly tries to deny that, to some extent, Kaido was right that the world would hate her.
  • Call-Back: During their training fight in Winning Island, Marco tells Izuku he's "always serious" after stopping Izuku's attack with Haki, the same phrasing Rayleigh used to stop an attack from Marco twenty odd years prior when they fought as part of the Roger-Whitebeard brawl.
  • Calling the Old Man Out: Yamato does this so often that when she stops for roughly two weeks to secretly nurse Izuku back to health, it’s noted as highly unusual.
  • Cassandra Truth: Spytand Malice notices Yamato adding odd, spotting her running back to her room with food and not challenging Kaido for nearly two weeks. He thinks something is up, but the other high-ranking Beast Pirates (especially Queen) dismiss his concerns and think Spytand's just a Stalker with a Crush towards Yamato. When Yamato escapes and Spytand explains to Kaido that his warnings were ignored, Kaido is not pleased.
  • Cat Girl: Xandra, one of Who's Who's subordinates.
  • Can't Hold His Liquor: Izuku blacks out and has to be revived by the other Whitebeard Pirates after taking a small sip from Teach's private stash when Teach offers some for Izuku's birthday.
  • Can't Kill You, Still Need You: Though he blames Spytand for letting Yamato and "Deku" escape, Kaido spares his life because the ex-Marine is the only one who has an accurate idea of what Izuku looks like and some knowledge of his powers and fighting style.
  • Chick Magnet: Izuku; no less than five women have expressed interest in him in some form or another- Ulti, Xandra, Charlotte Galette, Uta, and Yamato (though Izuku is not aware of Galette's interest as they have yet to cross paths).
  • Chronic Hero Syndrome: Try as they might to avoid getting detected by Kaido after their escape from Onigashima, Izuku and Yamato can't help but lend a helping hand whenever the situation calls for it, such as aiding Whitey Bay in fending off Brownbeard's attack on Luderterin or staying in Doyle to help take down the Finalem Brothers.
  • Cloudcuckoolander: Bao Huang, who meticulously arranges the schedules for the Tobiroppo while carrying on a casual conversation with King.
  • Commonality Connection:
    • Izuku and Yamato bond over their shared idolization of someone to the point of borderline imitating that person.
    • Trafalgar Law and Izuku come to a mutual interest in superheroes and comic books, one of the first things the normally standoffish Law ends up bonding with the young hero over.
  • Composite Character: Quite a few of the story's original characters share traits with characters from One Piece and My Hero Academia canon:
    • Reichen Bach takes Vivi's role as a blue-haired royal who wants to help their people and Ace's scorn towards their biological parent, with a dash of Izuku's ability to swiftly analyze other people based on their mannerisms.
    • The Finalem brothers call to mind a good amount of characters themselves. To wit:
      • Finalem Handsome has a Logia power related to rough and coarse minerals that get stronger near their source like Sir Crocodile does, which, in Handsome's case, is the Salt-Salt Fruit. He also shares Crocodile's charisma and desire to rule a country, as well as his powers being negatively affected by moisture.
      • Finalem Bandsome can transform into toxic gas like Caesar Clown can (though only when superheated) and shares Charlotte Katakuri's inventiveness in employing his Devil Fruit powers.
      • Much like Coribu and Caribou, the Finalems are a Siblings in Crime duo who lead a thousand-strong pirate crew. In essence, they're what Coribu and Caribou could have been had they been smarter and more competent.
      • The Finalems also have the ability to inflict One-Hit Kills with their powers, with Handsome being able to dehydrate his opponents in the same manner as Crocodile with his Salt-Salt Fruit powers and Bandsome being able to inflict severe poisoning with his Silver-Silver Fruit abilities a la Magellan.
    • Honest Guy shares Hody Jones' inability to let go of their past grudges and willingness to send a kingdom into turmoil for the sake of their goals along with Spandam's status as a Non-Action Guy who goes down rather quickly when their plan is dismantled.
  • Contrived Coincidence: Izuku and Yamato land on an island where the latter has a nasty encounter with a stonefish on the beach... at the exact same time that Vinsmoke Reiju is wandering near that same beach and hears Yamato's screams.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle:
    • Yamato puts up a spirited fight, but in the end, she never stood a chance against Kaido. Then again, the whole point was to distract the Yonko while Izuku steals the keys to Yamato's cuffs, which he does successfully.
    • Spytand Malice ambushes and seems to stomp Izuku. Then Izuku stops playing around and stomps him—all without having Haki.
    • King stomps Ace and the Spade Pirates during their failed raid on Wano when they threaten Bao Huang.
    • Caribou tries picking a fight with Izuku, Yamato, and Reiju on Spider Miles. Yamato knocks him over the horizon in two hits and Izuku is able to scare the rest of his crew into giving up piracy with a quick display of power.
  • Curb Stomp Cushion:
    • To make them stronger, Whitebeard takes Izuku and Yamato to Winning Island and has them fight Marco and Jozu respectively. And he does mean "fight"- no pulled punches or intentional moments of weakness like a sparring match, but an all out brawl to test their skills. While both are able to push their limits and briefly surprise the two captains, Marco and Jozu are so far above the two that they are swiftly defeated (though the two are impressed that Izuku and Yamato managed to put up such a good fight).
    • Queen largely clowns Ace during their "fight" in chapter 60, but Ace is driven to such heights of rage that he is able to manifest Armament Haki and land a solid hit on Queen's face, briefly cutting through Queen's bravado and giving Ace a moral victory if nothing else.
  • Did You Just Flip Off Cthulhu?: During the Reverie, Reichen Bach gave an impassioned speech calling out the failings of the Marines and the World Government in defending Doyle from the Finalem Pirates, culminating in him asking for a complete oversight initiative to weed out corruption within the Marines. While he doesn't get that, the Marines begrudgingly agree to entrust military hardware to Doyle, which is a lot for a government that will often Un-person people who mouth off too much.
  • Downer Beginning: The story opens with Yamato solemnly patching herself up after losing yet another fight to Kaido and finding a bloodied, near-death Izuku Midoriya washed up on the shores of Onigashima. Izuku, for his part, won the Final Battle against All for One back in the My Hero Academia universe, but along with Izuku getting beaten to a pulp that fight saw the deaths of both Bakugou and Tomura (whom Izuku was trying to save) and left him stranded in an unfamiliar universe with no hope of returning.
  • Dead Man's Switch: All for One implemented a black hole quirk inside of Tomura that would activate in case his new body were to be killed. If he died in his new body, he’s taking whoever killed him (likely One for All) down with him in one big last “fuck you”.
  • Declaration of Protection: Yamato makes a silent one towards Izuku in Chapter 2note .
  • Defector from Decadence: Spytand Malice left the Marines after realizing that they were just attack dogs for a bunch of psychotically corrupt nobles, in spite of all their preaching about justice. The Beast Pirates aren't saints either, but they're honest about it, which is why he joined them.
  • Dehumanization: One of the biggest factors in Kaido being an Abusive Parent to Yamato. It's clear from his Hannibal Lecture during their fight that he sees his own daughter as some sort of extension of himself and his legacy and actively devalues any feelings or desires of hers that do not conform to that expectation.
  • Double Standard Rape: Female on Male: Averted. Ulti's rapacious intentions toward Izuku are neither Played for Laughs nor seen as a good thing; and when he comes within a hair's breadth of being raped by Xandra, it's depicted as frightening rather than titillating.
  • The Dragon: King is this to Kaido, being his strongest and least eccentric subordinate.
  • Dressing as the Enemy: Izuku disguised himself as one of the Beast Pirates to blend in as his signature green hero outfit literally stands out. It's not perfect, as while he can look the part he certainly can't act the part and his horrified reaction towards the public execution is what tips Malice off that Izuku is trouble.
  • Dramatic Irony: Twice in Chapter 55:
    • Izuku and Yamato want to lay low and quietly find a way to Germa 66, but their hero instincts kick in and they offer to help a castaway named Sora get back to civilization on their way. "Sora" is actually Vinsmoke Reiju, the eldest of the Vinsmoke kids and a Super-Soldier originally under Germa's control.
    • Reiju, for her part, wants to defect from Germa 66 and use "En" and "Anna" (she knows their real names because she had been spying on them when Yamato was injured) as a means to live a peaceful life far away from her father's machinations. Unbeknownst to Reiju, her two new friends are pirates-cum-heroes looking to bring Germa 66 to justice for razing Brew Island, and will be trying to get as close to her father as possible.
  • Drill Sergeant Nasty: Spytand Malice was an unforgiving taskmaster during his time as a Marine, and becoming a pirate has done nothing to change that. He gets results, though, which is why he is considered reliable and King gets the first hint that something is wrong after the Fire Festival when he sees Malice's men lazing about with nothing to do.
  • Dying Race: The oni, according to Kaido, have been whittled down to only a few individuals (himself, Yamato, and most of the Flying Six sans Malice) due to them being "unjustly" evicted from their ancestral homelands by the Kozuki Family and then hunted down by the World Government in the thousand years that followed.
  • Due to the Dead: The Whitebeard Pirates hold a special ceremony in honor of Oden and Toki after Yamato delivers news of their deaths at the hands of Kaido, drinking in solidarity as Whitebeard swears vengeance.
  • Enemy Civil War: When Ulti bursts into Who's Who's private quarters looking for Izuku, Who's Who and his subordinates do not take kindly to the intrusion and attack her.
  • Enemy Mine: Unknowingly done by Doll (a Marine Ensign) who fights alongside Sabo and Koala (members of the Revolutionary Army) to defend Doyle from the Finalem Pirates.
  • Entertainingly Wrong:
    • When they first meet him, many people assume Izuku's powers come from a Devil Fruit and are quite surprised when he pulls off stunts Devil Fruit users absolutely cannot do (like swimming). Spytand Malice, Whitey Bay, and the Whitebeards initially guess this (thinking he got Smoker or Shiki's Devil Fruit, respectively), and are surprised when he reveals that to not be true.
    • At the start of the second arc, the beast pirates assume “Deku” and Yamato must have escaped into Wano because there is nowhere else they could have fled. Meanwhile, Izuku used his ability to fly to take himself and Yamato to a sky island well beyond Wano’s borders.
    • Upon meeting them, Reiju initially believes Izuku has a Devil Fruit, but closer observation corrects her of that notion. She instead jumps to a different conclusion: technological or genetic manipulation courtesy of Dr. Vegapunk.
    • Based on a (bad) first impression, the Marines (courtesy of Lieutenant Ratel) assume that Izuku is some kind of genetically engineered war beast that Germa lost control over and is now under Trafalgar Law's control.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: Spytand Malice is a brutal pirate and a social Darwinist, but he despises hypocrites and hates the Absolute Justice doctrine espoused by some Marines.
  • Everyone Has Standards:
  • Everyone Is a Super: Averted, when Izuku sees a normal village on the One Piece world for the first time he's struck for a bit of a loop once he fully registers that everyone there is quirkless, just like he used to be, and that this is the norm here rather than the exception.
  • Evil Gloating: During his call to Bach and Lawson, Finalem Handsome gleefully taunts them with the deaths of Vice Admiral Scotyard and his Marine armada at the hands of the Finalem Pirates.
  • Eviler than Thou: After getting his first look at Kaido, Izuku notes that while All for One was content to be a shadow king in Japan during the early Quirk era, Kaido in the same situation would have settled for nothing less than World Domination and probably would have succeeded.
  • "Eureka!" Moment: During an argument over the defense of Doyle, Lawson flippantly suggests that Bach just "roll out the red carpet" for the Finalems and be done with it. Bach pauses before having a manic moment and declaring Lawson a genius, followed up by him making arrangements for his ultimate gambit against the Finalems: Inspired by Izuku's retelling of the Trojan War, Bach fakes surrendering to the pirates to lure them up to his palace, where Izuku, Yamato, and the Royal Army are waiting in ambush to defeat the pirates while they are vulnerable.
  • Fan Disservice: Apparently, Teach wears a speedo in the shower.
  • Fallen Hero: Kaido was once known as the "Hero of Vodka" before he was sold by the very kingdom he gave his life to. He became a pirate and one of the Four Emperors of the Sea.
  • Fantasy Counterpart Culture: Doyle is essentially Victorian England in the One Piece world, with its king and his prime minister being clear Expies of Sherlock Holmes and John Watson respectively.
  • Fantastic Racism: The Oni race are feared and hated by everyone in the world and they only saw Oni useful for their unnatural strength as Kaido attests to when he fought for Kingdom of Vodka as their Hero... Only to be betrayed and sold to the World Government. He tells Yamato this that the world will reject her for who she is, but so far only Izou has shown hostility to Yamato based solely on her race.
  • Fish out of Water: Izuku gets sent to the One Piece world, or, as one commenter on the fic's Spacebattles thread put it, "dunked into an ocean where Megalodons, leviathans, and fucking Godzillas roam about". Considering how ridiculously powerful and tough One Piece characters are WITHOUT putting Devil Fruits and/or Haki into the equation, Izuku's NOT going to have it easy here.
  • Foil: Yamato and Ulti. Both carry spiked clubs and are known for their physical prowess; they both have extreme feelings toward Kaido; they both have explosive tempers; and they both care for Izuku. However, Yamato hates her dad whereas Ulti is loyal to him; and Yamato may cherish Izuku but just sees him as a friend (or so she says), while Ulti is openly in love with him and wants his babies while flying into a Yandere rage at the thought of Yamato getting Izuku first.
  • Foreshadowing: Honest Guy's debut is rife with these pointing toward his nature as a ruthless criminal, from being a fox mink named Guy (as in Guy Fawkes) and resembling Honest John from Pinocchio. The fact that he also to a seedy tavern named after the main antagonist of The Hound of the Baskervilles, Stapelton, doesn't help matters either, and the dark forest its located in is called the Baskerville Woods, to boot!
  • Funbag Airbag: How Izuku and Ulti meet; he's not watching where he's going and bounces off Ulti's breasts when he runs into her (initially mistaking her for Yamato), and rather than be annoyed Ulti sizes up Izuku before squealing about how cute he is and declaring he is now her boyfriend.
  • Genius Bruiser: Izuku dupes Malice into a false sense of security during their fight into thinking he’s a smoke-based Logia User (when Malice made the accusation, Izuku was perplexed for a moment before he played along to feed into Malice’s accusation) and then used all of his quirks in the fight save for Fa Jin. Not that it was needed anyway.
  • Groin Attack: Reiju punts Lieutenant Ratel between the legs when he tries to attack the citizens of Tailfeather in Chapter 62.
  • The Heavy:
    • Spytand Malice is actively trying to learn more about Izuku so he can tattle to Kaido and hopefully score points with his boss, making him the main antagonist of the first arc despite being relatively low in the pecking order of Kaido's officers. He even manages to briefly stop Izuku from unlocking Yamato's cuffs.
    • Ulti could also be considered this, since her rampage through Onigashima is alerting more and more of its inhabitants to Izuku's presence, and her first meeting with him directly fucked up a key part of his and Yamato's escape plan. On the other hand, her actions are also providing a good distraction for Izuku and Yamato during their escape.
  • Hero of Another Story:
    • Reichen Bach and Justinian Lawson are said to have solved some cases in the past while ruling Doyle. Considering how both are inspired by Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson, it's more than appropriate.
    • Sabo and Koala are on their own mission for the Revolutionary Army, and crossing paths with Izuku and Yamato is merely a coincidence that leads to a limited collaboration (not that Izuku or Yamato realize it at the time).
  • Heroic Vow:
    • Rather than just escape Wano on his own, Izuku swears to remove Yamato's explosive cuffs and take her with him. He succeeds.
    • As Izuku and Yamato depart from Onigashima, both of them vow to get stronger and defeat her father.
  • Hero Worship: All Might for Izuku, Oden for Yamato. They even bond over talking about how awesome their respective idols were. Deconstructed later on in the Melville Arc- Yamato was so enamored with Oden's story that she believed that her Hero Worship alone would get her an in with his former retainers and friends, and they would welcome her with open arms as they did Oden. While she's proven correct in regards to Whitey Bay and Edward Newgate (whom are both in the "friends" group), when she finally meets one of those retainers, Izou, his outright hostility towards her shatters Yamato's perception of the world and proves that Kaido wasn't entirely wrong when he said humans would hate and reject oni like them. This conflict between Oden and Kaido both being right leaves Yamato a sobbing wreck doubting her own freedom and self-image.
  • Heist Episode: The Onigashima arc of the story is structured around a theft- Yamato initially wants to help Izuku escape from Wano without her, but Izuku refuses to leave her behind, forcing them to steal a special key to unlock her explosive shackles. Said key is on Kaido at all times, and since taking him head on is out of the question Izuku resolves to steal it from him when he's unaware.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: Finalem Handsome inadvertently gives the heroes and the audience valuable information on defeating him when he yelps in pain thanks to the rain disrupting his salt-like constitution while he was busy gloating about how the Finalem Pirates has Doyle at their mercy.
  • Hope Spot: Against all odds, Izuku steals the key from Kaido and is poised to flee Wano with Yamato. And then Spytand Malice shows up.
  • How We Got Here: At the end of chapter 6, Izuku begins telling Yamato the story of how he and his friends "became the world's greatest heroes", which we hear the tail end of at the start of chapter 7, making all of My Hero Academia a Recap Episode for Izuku's life and arrival in Onigaishima.
  • Hypocrite: Ulti berates her brother, Page One, for opposing her taking Izuku as a boyfriend, proclaiming that she doesn't try to prevent him from getting a girlfriend. Page One angrily retorts that, yes, she does.
  • I Let Gwen Stacy Die: Izuku blames himself for Bakugo's death, as well as his failure to truly save Tenko Shimura from the grasp of All for One.
  • I'm Taking Him Home with Me: Ulti gushes over Izuku, proclaims him her boyfriend, and tries to take him back to her room. Yamato has none of it and starts a brawl with Ulti and Page One to give Izuku a chance to escape.
  • I See Dead People: Not see, but rather sense. Kaido is able to sense the vestiges of One for All inside Izuku, which annoys him since most animals or rodents usually scurry away in his mere presence. This fact makes Izuku freeze in terror, and the Vestiges are of no help as they too were scared shitless.
    • Anyone with sufficiently strong Observation Haki can see the Vestiges; during their meeting, Whitebeard can see them just fine and asks if Izuku is haunted, though he cannot hear what they are saying and Izuku has to speak for them.
    • In one of the omakes, Big Mom can too thanks to her Soul-Soul Fruit.
    • Others who have haki but not Emperor-level haki (like Sabo) or who have other supernatural abilities (like Teach/Blackbeard) can sense the Vestiges when interacting with Izuku, but otherwise cannot see them.
  • Invisible to Normals: Haki can only be seen by other haki-users, so when Yamato tries showing off Armament Haki to Izuku it looks like she's just holding out her hand. The only way he can sense it is when Yamato hits him with it while he's using One For All.
  • I Want Them Alive!: Kaido explicitly says that Izuku is to be taken alive so he can unleash the full weight of his wrath upon the boy. He also orders Queen to ensure that the injured Spytand Malice is to be restored to full health so Kaido can interrogate him personally, though he does show a bit of mercy by sparing Malice so he can make up for his failure.
  • Join or Die: Rocks D. Xebec's ultimatum to Whitebeard when they first met was either Whitebeard joined his crew, or Rocks would have Sphinx blown off the map. Even with his hands around the man's throat, Whitebeard couldn't take that risk.
  • Kill It with Water: Similar to Crocodile, if Finalem Handsome gets wet, it negatively affects him due to what he's a Logia of (salt). He might actually be even worse than Crocodile, since he experiences great pain and breaks out in debilitating welts just from getting mildly wet, and Izuku points out the stupidity of a pirate basically making himself allergic to the stuff.
  • Knight Templar Parent: It’s revealed in their duel while Yamato is distracting Kaido from Izuku stealing the keys to her cuffs that Kaido genuinely wants his daughter to become strong enough that no one in the world could harm her. Of course, as is the case in One Piece canon, he’s taken this to such an abhorrent extreme (even by One Piece standards) that Yamato genuinely wants nothing to do with him and would rather take moral and social cues from a dead Manchild.
  • Kill the God: Kaido's endgame is to cause so much chaos and destruction that it will force the return of Joy Boy, with Kaido hoping to kill him as retribution for Joy Boy seemingly favoring humans over the other races.
  • Last Disrespects: Whitebeard, Kaido, and Big Mom celebrated Rocks D. Xebec's death by getting drunk together and pissing on his final resting place before parting ways. It was the last time the three were even remotely friendly towards one another.
  • Lensman Arms Race: To prepare for the invasion of Wano, Whitebeard goes to his secret shipyard of Melville and orders five battleships in the same class as the Moby Dick to counter Kaido's own army and SMILE operation.
  • Lesser of Two Evils: When Ulti goes on a rampage looking for Izuku, those who take notice internally note that being the target of Ulti's affections, while not exactly pleasant, is still far more preferable than being targeted by Black Maria.
  • Love at First Sight: Ulti becomes obsessed with Izuku upon meeting him, possibly because the competition isn't exactly appealing; not only does she want to go on dates with him, but she even declares her intent to have his babies. Page One even angrily points out that she's moving way too fast, but she blissfully ignores him.
  • Manchild: Not unsurprisingly, Izuku has this impression of Oden after Yamato reads Oden’s logbook to him. Particularly the shenanigans he got up to before leaving Wano. Izuku still admits that, for all his faults, Oden did become a good man worthy of admiration in the end.
  • Marshmallow Hell:
    • How Izuku meets Ulti. Page One is furious, but Ulti punches him into the ceiling and glomps Izuku like a teddy bear.
    • Yamato subjects Izuku to this multiple times throughout the story. At first he freaks out due to Izuku's canonical hang-up about girls showing him affection, but after some time spent with Yamato he gets used to it.
  • Mass "Oh, Crap!":
    • Everyone in the Wano area is scared shitless when Kaido transforms into his Dragon form after realizing that, not only has Yamato escaped, but the "possum" he sensed earlier helped her do it and her attack was a distraction to give him the chance to steal the key to her cuffs.
    Kaido: I... have been... robbed.
    • Special note goes to the Disasters and Flying Six who realize that despite their value to Kaido, they are all (with the exception of King) a hair's breadth away from being killed themselves.
    • Later perspectives and the omakes show that this concern is beginning to filter through the rest of the New World as Kaido's unusual behavior is noted.
  • Mood Whiplash:
    • The Mass "Oh, Crap!" above when Kaido realizes that Yamato has escaped through Izuku stealing the key to their cuffs and transforming into his Dragon form in a fury that everyone in Wano feels is contrasted in the next chapter with a Sneeze Cut from Izuku.
    • The victory celebration in Doyle has a lot of fun moments, such as Yamato suffering from eating Blazing Inferno Hellfire Sauce and some cute moments with kids and couples enjoying each other's company. Then Bartholomew Kuma shows up on behalf of the World Government asking questions about Doyle's mysterious saviors (either Izuku and Yamato or Sabo and Koala).
    • Chapter 49 opens with Izuku, Yamato, and Haruta happily eating ice cream and ends with Izou getting kicked out of the Whitebeards for attacking Yamato and shooting Marco, Izuku injured from going beyond his limits and getting a Pistol Whip trying to stop Izou, and Yamato sobbing as her worldview on Oden and her comrades is roughly shaken.
  • Mook Horror Show: After they defeat the Finalem Brothers and the main body of the Finalem Pirates, Izuku and Yamato head out to pick off the skeleton crew left to guard the Marine Base and nearby town one by one, Izuku snatching them up into the fog with Black Whip while Yamato dons her hannya mask and pounces on them from the shadows.
  • Mundane Object Amazement: Yamato, due to her sheltered upbringing, finds many things most people would take for granted to be absolutely fascinating, which combines with her Manchild tendencies to make her very excitable about new things. One of the most prominent examples is her reaction to a shower (something Izuku is all too familiar with and actually surprised to see given the Schizo Tech of One Piece), as not only is it new it's a means by which she can bathe without risking her Super Drowning Skills kicking in.
  • Neck Lift: When Orochi tries to protest Kaido commandeering his army to find Izuku and Yamato, Kaido has King yank Orochi off the ground as a reminder of his real position within Wano.
  • No Body Left Behind: Bakugo's body crumbles to ash right in front of Izuku after getting hit by a final attack from Tomura.
  • Normal Fish in a Tiny Pond: Zigzagged with Izuku; while he was still a rookie in the My Hero Academia universe, he was getting the hang of the strongest Quirk in that world and would have been its greatest hero had he not been transported to One Piece. Within One Piece, he is at best a mid-level threat, able to hold his own against some dangerous foes with trickery and luck but nowhere near ready to challenge the true powers of the Grand Line, with Kaido being so powerful that if he had been transported across dimensions instead of Izuku, he could have conquered that world without breaking a sweat. However, Izuku is only mid-tier in the New World, the most dangerous section of the Grand Line where the biggest and baddest pirates live- in the Blue Seas or early sections of Paradise, he likely would have had nowhere near as great of challenges.
  • No Good Deed Goes Unpunished: Rescuing Yamato was undoubtedly heroic, but it also caused the Beast Pirates to unleash their wrath on the surrounding islanders.
    • In a Butterfly Effect way, Yamato escaping before Ace shows up makes Ace trying to kill Kaido end up much worse for him than canon.
  • No-Holds-Barred Beatdown: Kaido's "chat" with Queen after the latter failed to heed Malice's warnings was so severe Queen lost his mechanical arm and has to spend an unspecified amount of time in a mechanical wheelchair.
  • No-Respect Guy: To his frustration, Spytand Malice is treated with contempt by the Beast Pirates due to his being a former Marine, in spite of his power and effectiveness.
  • Off-into-the-Distance Ending: Izuku and Yamato fly away from Onigashima at the end of the first arc.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: Twice in the first arc:
    • Spytand Malice thinks something is off when Yamato doesn't challenge Kaido for two weeks and starts diversifying her eating habits, including taking back more food to her room than even a Big Eater like herself would take. He begins investigating despite the other Beast Pirates telling him It's Probably Nothing and come fairly close to catching Izuku and Yamato when they make their escape attempt.
    • King first senses things are not well in Onigashima when he wakes up and finds Malice's crew sitting around doing nothing- Malice is an incredibly harsh Drill Sergeant Nasty and a workaholic to boot, and him leaving his crew to their own devices is so out of character it warrants investigation.
  • Oh, Crap!:
    • Izuku is scared shitless when Kaido makes eye contact with him, as having the Yonkou become aware of his presence is the last thing he and Yamato need.
    • Izuku gets another one when he bumps into Ulti('s breasts) and her brother takes offense.
    • Izuku finds himself in Kaido's room... and the Yonko not only notices his presence, but also the previous users of OFA inside him.
    • Spytand Malice gets one when he realizes just how much of a threat Izuku is, and that if he trains himself the boy could reasonably challenge Kaido in a one-on-one fight.
  • Outside-Context Problem: Everybody who experiences Izuku's Quirks firsthand are baffled by the fact that they aren't the result of a Devil Fruit.
  • Only Known by Their Nickname: Besides Yamato, none of the Beast Pirates know Izuku's real name and refer to him as "Deku". Outside of Wano, the two use a number of aliases to hide their identities so that no one that helps them has to suffer Kaido's wrath should he catch their trail.
  • Offscreen Moment of Awesome: Izuku and his friends arrive on Swallow Island just in time to see Trafalgar Law and the Heart Pirates mopping up a rival group of pirates that attacked a town under their protection. From the looks of things, Law soloed the entire crew while Bepo, Shachi, and Penguin looted the ship.
  • Oni: Kaido and Yamato are explicitly identified as oni here, rather than being Ambiguously Human in One Piece. Oni are a species like Fishmen and giants native to the area of Wano, and have a reputation as malevolent boogeymen who love battle and slaughter when they are not feasting and drinking. It's implied the oni were driven to near extinction by the Wano Shogunate and the World Government, with Kaido and Yamato being some of the last of their species alongside the rest of the Flying Six sans Spytand Malice.
  • Pacifist Run: Izuku is well aware that he's in no condition to fight the entirety of the Beast Pirates with just him and Yamato, so his plan to free her amounts to this instead. It's honestly impressive that they manage to pull it off with only three fights total, one of which they planned for.
  • Papa Wolf: Kaido, in perhaps the most twisted, nightmarish, and abusive example of this trope, flies into an Unstoppable Rage after he discovers that “Deku” stole his ‘most precious possession’, I.e. his only remaining family, by freeing Yamato.
    • King, of all people, has a more traditionally touching example of this (at least by comparison) when he absolutely wrecks Ace and the Spade Pirates for attacking Bao Huang. His rage at them for attacking her is so visible and terrifying that Ace only refers to him as The Demon in his narration and his retribution is utterly and unsurprisingly brutal.
  • Parental Substitute: In light of additional information regarding Reichen Basil, it is implied that Lawson was Bach’s father figure in his life, given their many exchanges reminding Yamato of them, leading to possibly imply that Judith, the head maid, was Bach’s mother figure.
  • Pet the Dog:
  • Power Misidentification: A recurring theme for Izuku is that many of the people he meets think that his power is something else native to the world of One Piece, usually a Devil Fruit power:
    • Malice thinks it's the Smoke-Smoke Fruit based on his use of Smokescreen, but learns the hard way it's not when Izuku survives getting thrown out to sea and returns to deliver a Megaton Punch to the Beast Pirate.
    • Whitey Bay and the Whitebeard Pirates assume it's the Float-Float Fruit based on Izuku's flying. He corrects the latter by showing he can still swim.
    • Blackbeard initially thinks Izuku "stole" the Dark-Dark Fruit from him based on his use of Blackwhip, but closer inspection alleviates his fears. He does think that Izuku has a Split-Personality Team like he does rather than a Mind Hive.
    • Reiju quickly rules out a Devil Fruit, but instead thinks he's a genetic experiment of Dr. Vegapunk.
    • Invoked in Chapter 62 when Yamato blurts out that Izuku ate the Dark-Dark Fruit so that Law won't poke too deep into their cover stories. Law is confused because he thinks the Dark-Dark Fruit would have even more darkness, but decides against pressing further.
  • Point of Divergence: Izuku Midoriya lands in Onigashima two years before canon One Piece begins, and things begin to snowball from there:
    • Izuku helps Yamato escape from Onigashima. The exact ramifications are not shown in full, but it has a major impact on the fate of one character in particular: Ace. Because Yamato isn't there to dissuade him from attacking the Beast Pirates, Ace goes ahead with his attack on Kaido and the Spade Pirates are brutally stomped by the Emperor and his crew. Ace is captured and enslaved while his crew are lobotomized for Queen's first attempt at the Marys surveillance system, meaning that Ace does not go on to meet Whitebeard and join their crew.
    • During the hunt for Izuku and Yamato, Page One smashes up a few houses in Ebisu in frustration. This leads to Toko and Yasu being displaced and meeting Tama and Tenguyama in Amigasa rather than staying within the Flower Capital (also, Yasu had not eaten the defective SMILE at the point he was displaced, so he is still has his more serious personality).
  • Public Execution: Kaido hosts a brutal one, feeding accused Kozuki loyalists to the Numbers with Izuku being forced to watch helplessly since he can't risk blowing his cover.
  • Punny Name:
  • Rigged Spectacle Fight: As part of his ongoing efforts to break Ace, Queen challenges him to a no-rules sumo wrestling match in front of the prisoners and Beast Pirate Guards- win, and he'll let Ace go free. Ace has been beat down from two months of hard labor, can't use Haki yet, and is wearing seastone chains so he can't use his Devil Fruit, so the majority of the fight is Queen clowning Ace and taunting him about how his friends are all dead and he's wasting his time trying to get free. Though he still doesn't win, Queen's taunting drives Ace to such heights of rage that he unlocks Armament Haki and is able to land at least one solid punch to Queen's face before going down.
  • Rhetorical Question Blunder: When Page One opposes the idea of Ulti taking Izuku as her boyfriend, she gripes at him for being "pushy" and sarcastically asks if she prevents him from getting a girlfriend. Page One immediately responds that she very much does do that—all the time.
  • Screw the Rules, I'm Doing What's Right!: Sabo and Koala were sent by Dragon to investigate Doyle, being told not to openly intervene unless it could benefit their cause. Sabo has enough and eventually intervenes, and Koala follows suit when she realizes that some of the attacking pirates are trying to create a chain reaction gas explosion and send the city up in flames, even fighting alongside a Marine Ensign to defeat the pirates.
  • "Shaggy Dog" Story: After the Spade Pirates are wiped out by the Beast Pirates, Ace (the only survivor) becomes determined to save those who were turned into cyborg slaves by Queen... only for the Headliner to cruelly reveal that, due to overzealousness on his part, they eventually starved to death.
  • Ship Tease:
    • As they spend more time together, Yamato catches herself developing... some kind of feelings for Izuku, thinking about how nice he looks when sleeping peacefully and sharing a dance with him after defeating the Finalem Brothers (twice, as they have a private practice session on a deserted island after leaving Doyle to meet Whitey Bay).
    • Izuku gets some with Uta who can't help but notice how built he is. Later in Chapter 46, Uta openly fantasizes about Izuku in a open shirt and leather pants during her call with him.
  • Shout-Out:
    • The Kingdom of Doyle, including many of its denizens, is this for the Sherlock Holmes franchise. A number of the surrounding islands are named after other famous British authors like Lewis Carroll and J. R. R. Tolkien.
    • The Benelli Sisters are similar to Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum in mannerisms, only far more excitable.
    • Honest Guy is based on Honest John from Pinocchio and the real-life historical figure Guy Fawkes.
    • Finalem Handsome draws inspiration from Chef Saltbaker while Finalem Bandsome resembles Quigle Opie in appearance and T-1000 in terms of abilities.
    • Justinian Lawson invokes Basil of Baker Street with his mannerisms, only in this instance he’s more of the Watson to Bach’s Sherlock. In addition to his rivalry with a noble named “Jenner” and his name, it’s fair to say that Justin from the Secret of NIMH was inspired too. He’s also one latter away from Dawson, further cementing his ‘Watson’ position.
    • Ironically enough, Reichen Bach himself is based off of Ruler James Moriarty in appearance, except with blue hair.
    • Jernigan Jenner himself is based on his namesake from The Secret of NIMH in being Lawson’s rival with a touch of Scar, making the audience believe he may have been in league with the Finalem pirates (though that turned out to be a Red Herring).
    • Whitebeard's private shipyard is located on and island called Melville, befitting a location that produced a ship called the Moby-Dick.
    • While exploring the ruins of Elegia, Uta finds a book that has a strikingly similar plot to The Nutcracker, about a girl entering a dream world with toy soldiers and talking rats.
    • Queen gives a "Skadoosh!" before pummeling Ace with his gut during their "fight" in chapter 60, and mocks Ace over the death of his crew the same way the Joker laughs at Batman over him torturing Robin into Joker Junior in Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker.
  • Siblings in Crime: The pirates threatening Doyle are led by a pair of brothers, both with Logia powers.
  • Shovel Strike: Doll hits her former superior officer in the face with a fireplace shovel when he's outed as The Mole and tries attacking Reichen Bach.
  • Sins of the Father: A recurring theme throughout the story:
    • Reichen Bach has it twofold; first, he is unjustly compared to his Caligula of a grandfather, Reichen Basil, and is targeted with everything from criticism to a botched assassination on behalf of some disgruntled citizens. Moreover, his mother is notorious pirate Whitey Bay, who left Bach with her parents after he was born because she knew the World Government would come after him to get to her if they ever found out who he was.
    • Kaido chooses not to put out a wanted poster on Yamato, fearing that the World Government might capture her as a bargaining chip against him.
    • Izou, a former retainer of Oden, despises Yamato on sight because she is the daughter of Kaido (who brutally subjugated Wano and killed Oden) and openly voices his hatred and desire to see her harmed, even after his crewmates and Whitebeard himself tell him to back off and calm down.
  • Slave to PR: Like the other Emperors of the Sea Kaido and his crew are very reliant on maintaining their aura of invincibility. This is why Ace and the Spade Pirates attack on Onigashima is so dangerous while the actual damage they did was negligible the fact that a rookie pirate was able to get through their defenses and cause some damage to Beast Pirates headquarters would be a massive blow to their reputation if information on it got out and could encourage an attack by another Emperor or the World Government.
  • Sneeze Cut: Izuku sneezes at the start of Chapter 18, after Kaido finds out that he and Yamato escaped. He lampshades it to Yamato, who hasn't heard of the idea before.
  • Social Darwinist: Spytand Malice subscribes to this philosophy, believing it to be the form of living with the least hypocrisy attached to it.
  • Single-Stroke Battle:
    • Well, single kick, but King knocks a rabid Ulti out with this. According to Spytand Malice, it would have wounded an admiral.
    • A fully-transformed Kaido crushes Page One with merely a backhand when Page One speaks out of turn after Yamato escapes.
  • Superman Stays Out of Gotham: The Emperors rarely leave their territory in force, as doing so would tip off the others and draw the World Government's attention, potentially starting a massive turf war. So while Whitebeard wants to take vengeance on Germa 66 for razing Brew Island and killing one of his close friends, he sends Izuku and Yamato alone into the North Blue so he can protect his holdings and have maximum deniability in the act (since as far as the world knows, the two are completely independent of any other powers).
  • Spotting the Thread:
    • After the Finalem Brothers are beaten and the G-12 base liberated, the heroes go in to inspect the base and free the officers. Bach notes it's odd that a fairly mediocre ship like the Finalems' could get past the heavy guns of the base, or that the commanding officer, Baker, is in such better shape than his junior officers, or why he seems to only read books that don't pertain to his position, or why there's a dead Transponder Snail in the fireplace with Donquixote Doflamingo's Jolly Roger on the side...
    • Later, Malice gets word of the Finalems defeat and reports it to King and Kaido. All three agree that it's suspicious that there is absolutely nothing about the two mysterious saviors that defeated the pirates, so Kaido orders a spy to go to Doyle and snoop around for information.
    • Law is able to quickly pick apart "En" and "Anna's" cover story by noting a few things: he saw no other ships around when he arrived at Swallow Island, the weather in the direction they were coming from was perfectly calm and not stormy like they said it was, neither of them know anything about one of the most popular comic series in the North Blue despite having travelled around there, and one of the trio is named after the star of that very same series... Fortunately for the heroes, Law doesn't voice any objections and keeps to himself about his concerns.
  • Training from Hell: Following the incident with Breed and seeing their... less than stellar training methods, Whitebeard takes Izuku and Yamato to Winning Island and puts them in some high-intensity sparring matches against his commanders. What follows is about two weeks of one severe beating after another, the two coming back to the Moby Dick exhausted and heavily bruised every night afterwards.
  • The Man Behind the Man: Twice in the Doyle arc; first, it's revealed fairly early on that the Finalem Brothers are working with Donquixote Doflamingo to harvest Doyle's mineral wealth (specifically looking for Seastone) and engage in slave trading, and later it's revealed they were invited in by the disgruntled son of the villainous Jansen family in a plot to overthrow Reichen Bach and seize power in the name of the Jansens.
  • This Is Unforgivable!:
    • Izuku bears witness to Kaido overseeing a gruesome public execution, and only the words of OFA's previous wielders keeps him from attacking the Yonko.
    • After Yamato "steals" Izuku from her, Ulti goes completely berserk and rampages across Onigashima to get him back. The other Tobiroppo are not happy when she starts barging into their respective lounges during her search.
    • Izou attacking Yamato and injuring Izuku and Marco in the process has the latter denounce Izou as a brother, with Whitebeard finishing things by banishing Izou from the Moby Dick.
  • Tiny Guy, Huge Girl: Izuku is shorter than both Yamato (who is implied to have a crush on him but doesn't fully comprehend it) and Ulti (who has a massive crush on him). Yamato specifically is noted as being around twice his height.
  • Token Good Teammate: Spytand Malice internally notes that he can think of only one World Noblenote  who wasn't a total prick—and paid a terrible price for it.
  • Tongue Trauma: Koala strikes the bull shark Fish-woman she's fighting during the battle for Doyle in the mouth, causing the pirate to bite off her own tongue.
  • Twinkle in the Sky: How the fight between Izuku and Spytand ends. It's later revealed that the latter ended up in Wano (specifically crash-landing in the slave mines), battered but somehow still alive, if barely.
  • Taking the Bullet: Marco jumps in front of Izou's gun when he tries to shoot Yamato on Melville. He makes a point of not healing the injury until after Izou has been kicked out of the Whitebeard Pirates.
  • The Un-Reveal:
    • Oden's notes contain an explanation about what the "Will of D" is and Yamato tells Izuku while reading Oden's journal to him, but the answer is hidden from the audience by a scene transition. He also destroyed his notes on the One Piece itself, so Yamato doesn't know what or where it is.
    • During a late night talk with Yamato and Teach, Izuku reveals he's gained another dream during his time in the New World. Just like Luffy telling his dream to the Straw Hats in canon, the exact nature of this dream is hidden from the audience, but both Yamato and Teach think it's a great dream and encourage him to pursue it.
  • Underestimating Badassery:
    • Despite agreeing with Yamato that he can’t risk stealing the key from Kaido without her distracting him, Izuku and the vestiges are still very much not prepared for how paralyzingly terrifying Kaido’s presence actually is. Made even worse when to his horror Kaido cannot only sense him, but also the souls living within him.
    • Spytand Malice severely underestimates Izuku’s strength and gets punched all the way to Wano for it.
    • Like in canon, Ace and the Spade Pirates believe they can take Kaido and the Beast Pirates. Unlike in canon, Yamato isn't there to talk him down and they are all wiped out, with Ace being taken as a prisoner with Kaido hoping to break him into joining his crew.
  • Unstoppable Rage:
    • Ulti rampages through Onigashima to get Izuku back, believing that Yamato took him.
    • Kaido unleashes his Dragon Mode when he realizes that Yamato and Izuku "robbed" him, which leaves the entirety of Wano shaking in fear of him.
  • Unreliable Narrator: Both Izou and Kaido give colored histories of Wano's relation with the oni; Izou, basing his knowledge off myths and ghost stories of his youth along with his own fight against the Beast Pirates, describes them as Always Chaotic Evil brutes who deserve nothing but hate and extermination, while Kaido claims the oni were fun-loving Boisterous Bruisers who lived in harmony with the local populace until the Kozuki Family invaded and drove them out. Both sides have some level of truth behind them, but neither one is wholly accurate to what really happened that led to such animosity between the two sides.
  • Villainous Crush: Ulti has a titanic one on Izuku. She has "known" him for only a handful of minutes, and already she wants to go on dates with him, kiss him, and have his babies.
  • Villain Has a Point: One of Kaido's lines to Yamato during his beatdowns is that the world hates the oni, and should she go out there they would reject and despise her just as they rejected and despised him. While most of the humans Yamato meets are not like that, it's her failed attempts at befriending Izou that get Yamato to admit Kaido wasn't completely wrong.
  • Villains Never Lie: For all the abuse he heaped on her, Yamato is adamant that one of the few things Kaido didn't do was lie to her. This becomes an even more bitter pill for her to swallow when she is brutally rejected and nearly murdered by Izou, one of Oden's former retainers, proving that Kaido was right to some extent about how normal humans would reject an oni like her.
  • Villain Respect: Even as Kaido is starting to have an emotional breakdown on realizing that his daughter is gone, he can’t help but admit that the scheme she and “Deku” came up with to steal the key to her cuffs without his knowledge is something straight out of old legends.
  • What Would X Do?: When Izuku is captured by an amorous Ulti, Yamato asks herself what Oden would do. Her solution? Strip down to her underwear, "drunkenly" dance through the halls, then clobber Page One with Takeru to start a brawl and allow Izuku to escape in a Smoke Out.
  • What Is This Thing You Call "Love"?: Having been raised by her Abusive Dad in a hellhole pirate den locked away from the rest of the world, Yamato doesn't have a concept of emotions like love outside of what she's read in Oden's journal. So when hints are dropped that she might be developing feelings for Izuku, she concludes it's some kind of hyper-protectiveness for him but is uncertain of what exactly she would label that as.
  • The Workaholic: Spytand Malice declares his job to be his "vice". King suggests he find something a little more conventional, like booze or drugs, so as to not be so prickly.
  • Would Hurt a Child:
    • Downplayed; while Kaido doesn't directly harm Tama, he indirectly sends her into catatonic shock with his mere presence while he was raging over Yamato and Izuku's escape.
    • Ulti shows no hesitation in doing this, even manhandling a girl for a doll that she thinks looks like Izuku.
  • Would Not Shoot a Civilian: Averted to hell and gone. When Kaido realizes that Yamato has escaped with Izuku's help, he orders a massive search, and declares that anyone who is hiding or aiding them is to be butchered along with their entire families.
  • Wretched Hive: Wano is inhabited by a massive crew of unfathomably brutal pirates, and Onigashima is no exception.
  • Wrong Context Magic: One For All is completely different than any of the existing powers or abilities in the One Piece setting, with Izuku being able to still swim and having far more distinct powers than a Devil Fruit user would, to say nothing of Haki. This lets him take Spytand Malice by surprise after the latter knocks him into the ocean during their fight; assuming from Izuku's use of Smoke that he killed Smoker for the Smoke-Smoke Fruit, he lets his guard down and gets hit by Izuku after Malice thought the fight was already won due to Devil Fruit user Super Drowning Skills.
  • What the Hell Are You?: Several characters ask this of Izuku as they see his powers;
  • We Will Meet Again: After the battle for Doyle is said and done, Sabo and Izuku meet up and Sabo collect his and Yamato's fingernails to create Vivre Cards for the two heroes, promising to meet up with them to deliver the goods sometime in the future.
  • You Can See Me?: The souls of the previous users of One For All within Izuku are shocked and terrified to learn that Haki users can see them as Kaido demonstrated.
  • You Didn't Ask: Bao Huang spots several signs of Yamato's escape and Izuku's battle with Spytand Malice during her flight with King, but she doesn't tell him until after they've passed by because she was distracted by flying and King didn't think to ask her if she'd seen anything unusual.
  • You Have Failed Me: Kaido declares this to both Queen and Spytand Malice during the latter's interrogation—Malice for losing Yamato to Izuku, and Queen for ignoring Malice's report on Izuku's presence and Yamato's odd behavior leading up to their escape. Malice gets off lightly with a simple order to track the pair down (which he wanted to do anyway), but Queen gets the shit kicked out of him and is reduced to an immobile Bandage Mummy.
  • You Know I'm Black, Right?: Izou's first racist rant against Yamato during Whitebeard's War Room Meeting gets shut down by Namur, a Fishman, who compares it to the bigotry he's faced from humans prior to him joining the Whitebeard Pirates.

    Omake: Party Crasher
In this omake, Izuku and Yamato are ambushed by the Big Mom Pirates, who capture Yamato and threaten to destroy Doyle if Izuku doesn't come to Tottoland and marry one of Charlotte Linlin's daughters. Knowing he can't rescue Yamato on his own, Izuku decides to take extreme measures...
  • And Now You Must Marry Me: A variant. Big Mom is having Yamato marry one of her sons.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: Izuku orchestrates a war between the Beast Pirates and the Big Mom Pirates, knowing that there will be much carnage and destruction, just to ensure Yamato isn't forced into a loveless marriage. He even says "YOU WILL ALL DIE NOW" in Morse Code by tapping a spoon against his teacup while staring icily at Katakuri, right before Kaido shows up.
  • Death Glare: Izuku spends the entire wedding staring hatefully at Charlotte Katakuri.
  • Godzilla Threshold: Izuku ends up compromising his own morals to save Yamato. In this case, he calls Kaido pretending to be the groom and sets Kaido on Tottoland as a whole.
  • What If?: The premise is an omake series where Big Mom has kidnapped Yamato to have an Oni in Tottoland.
    Omake: Dragon Hunt
Izuku crash-lands on an island known as the God Valley and is taken in by the princess, Dorothy. But when the World Nobles show up with the intent to slaughter the island's inhabitants, Izuku decides to step in...
  • Adaptational Villainy: Since he didn't get the chance to visit Fishman Island, Saint Mjosgard remains a villain and dies by Izuku's hand (though we don't know if he participated in the hunt in canon).
  • All for Nothing: Downplayed, as while the God Valley is ultimately destroyed by Imu after the battle, Izuku and his allies managed to save many innocents lives and evacuate them to another island.
  • Arch-Enemy: Izuku and Saint Figarland Garling are obsessed with killing one another. Izuku wins their first fight by the skin of his teeth, but Garling survives and is determined to get revenge.
  • Aristocrats Are Evil: The World Nobles are utter scum of the earth and love to parade their oh-so high-and-mighty status around.
  • Awesomeness Is a Force: After Izuku lands a kick on Saint Jaygarcia Saturn, the latter nearly kills the boy with his Haki alone, though Roger and Xebec intervene.
  • A God Am I: The World Nobles think they're gods. Izuku is having none of it.
  • Blade Catch: Izuku catches Garling's blade with his teeth, then bites down on it, shattering it.
  • Darth Vader Clone: Part 5 ends with Saint Figarland Garling becoming one, right down to the family loss bit. Unlike the original, though, he was always an openly evil bastard and the cybernetics just made him worse.
  • Defector from Decadence: Monkey D. Dragon already intended to defect from the Marines, but hearing about Izuku's deeds (and what brought them about) inspires him to quit on the very day he was due to be made an admiral.
  • Did You Just Punch Out Cthulhu?: Izuku squares off against Saint Figarland Garling, one of the deadliest villains in One Piece, and wins—all without using Haki. He also lands a kick on Saint Jaygarcia Saturn, though that one nearly gets him killed, with the arrival of the Roger and the Rock Pirates preventing his death at the last possible second.
  • Godzilla Threshold: The World Nobles in general, and Saints Jaygarcia Saturn and Figarland Garling in particular, are so unfathomably evil that Izuku actively tries to kill them.
  • Healing Factor: Saint Jaygarcia Saturn has one thanks to his Devil Fruit, though excessive usage can wear him down.
  • Made of Iron: Saint Figarland Garling tanks multiple hits from Izuku and gets back up, angrier than ever each time. Izuku's final attack (which kicks up a tornado) completely destroys his jaw, but he survives and still struggles to his feet to continue the fight. Kuma sends him flying until he crash-lands on another island, and not only does he survive, but he's still conscious when the Marines finds him!
  • Megaton Punch: Izuku's "God Valley Smash" is so powerful that the winds kicked up by its aftershock create a tornado.
  • Moral Myopia: The World Nobles came to the God Valley to butcher the inhabitants for fun, yet they call someone who dares to fight back a "demon". Izuku mercilessly calls Figarland Garling out on this.
  • My Biological Clock Is Ticking: A male and played with example. Xebec wants to make Izuku his heir when they first meet. Later, Xebec explicitly states he needs an heir.
  • No Name Given: As of Part 5's conclusion, neither the Roger Pirates, the surviving Rock Pirates, or the World Government know Izuku's name, with the latter simply dubbing him "the Green Demon".
  • Roaring Rampage of Revenge: Subverted. Izuku is enraged when the World Nobles start killing God Valley's inhabitants for sport and murderously retaliates, but his actions are methodical and planned-out, like a predator hunting its prey, which makes it all the more karmic.
  • Shout-Out:
    • Like in the main story, Izuku is knocked into a body of water by an opponent who assumes his powers come from a Devil Fruit, only for him to fly out of the water and slam into said opponent from behind.
    • Izuku catches a blade between his teeth.
    • Saint Figarland Garling is subjected to an excruciatingly (and deliberately) painful recovery after losing a fight, complete with getting cybernetic implants and being deprived of certain senses as punishment for said loss. For bonus points, his wife was among the dead and he thinks his son is dead too, unaware that the boy is alive.
  • Thou Shalt Not Kill: Averted. Izuku mercilessly kills every World Noble he can get his hands on, then puts their corpses on display.
  • Tongue Trauma: Izuku's final attack vaporized Garling's tongue. Even after getting a replacement jaw, it's noted that he'll never be able to taste again.
  • Villainous Breakdown: The longer his fight with Izuku drags out, the more unhinged Saint Figarland Garling becomes. By its end, he's completely lost it and won't stop screaming for Izuku's blood.
  • Villainous Valor: Say one thing for Saint Figarland Garling, he's no coward. Every time he gets beaten down by Izuku, he gets up again to continue the fight.
  • Villain Respect: Rocks is very impressed that Izuku has killed several World Nobles by the time they meet.
  • We Can Rule Together: Rocks D. Xebec really wants Izuku to be his heir. Downplayed with Gol D. Roger, who wants Izuku to join his crew but does not object to his acts of heroism.
  • You Have Failed Me: Saint Jaygarcia Saturn feels this way towards Garling for losing to Izuku. He doesn't kill him for it since Garling is too competent a minion to simply cast aside, but he makes sure that Garling's recovery is conducted without anesthetics, ensuring that it will be extremely painful for him.
