    Protagonist/Yuu
Grade: First yearnote
The main protagonist (default name Yuu but called "Prefect" by most of the cast) and Player Character of Twisted Wonderland. They stumbled into the titular land and into Night Raven College, having somehow been brought in the Black Carriage despite having no magic themself. According to Crowley, however, they seem to have an aptitude for "beast taming" (i.e. getting magicians to follow their orders). They enroll with Grim as a single student and stay in Ramshackle dorm while waiting for Crowley to find them a way home.
  • Adapted Out: Yuu is absent from the official anthologies and is never alluded to by any of the characters, giving the impression that they don’t exist within the universe these stories take place in. They also don’t appear in the official manga and novel adaptations of the game's story, though similar characters with "Yuu" in their names were created to fill their place.
  • Ambiguous Gender: Enrolls into Night Raven College, which is an all-boys school, but their gender is never brought up in-game, only occasionally hinted at by the characters and their circumstances. Averted in the manga and novel adaptations, where the respective characters who act as stand-ins for Yuu have clear gender identities.
  • Armor-Piercing Question: Tends to cut straight to the heart of the matter during their mirror visions, questioning why the villains acted the way they did.
  • Audience Surrogate: Shares this role with Ace, Deuce, and Grim. They’re from another world and don’t understand much of how this world works which often leads the other characters to explain it to them.
  • Batman Gambit: Yuu manages to pull this off during the final part of Chapter 3. Their plan involves retrieving the photograph that Azul asked Yuu to steal, but have another group steal the contracts kept in the safe. The other group consists of Leona and Ruggie, who only cooperate because Yuu and Grim threatened to make a ruckus and camp outside Leona's room unless he agreed to help. With Floyd and Jade distracted by Yuu's group back at the museum, this leaves Azul shorthanded when dealing with Leona and Ruggie.
  • The Beastmaster: In a more abstract sense. According to Crowley in the prologue, they seem to have an aptitude for "beast taming" which is giving instructions to arrogant Magicians in order to get them to cooperate. Because he believes that this attribute will be important to the future of the college, he allows Yuu to enroll into Night Raven despite them lacking the ability to use magic.
    • In the more traditional sense, Yuu is technically this to Grim as they are put in charge of making sure Grim doesn't get into more trouble as well as Grim acting as the primary power source of the two. However, Grim greatly prefers to go to the beat of his own drum and views himself as the master and Yuu as his servant.
  • Brutal Honesty: They’re prone to this, much to the surprise of Grim and Ace.
  • But Thou Must!: Due to being a mobile game, there are some limitations to what the player can have Yuu say or do, more often than not only giving the player the illusion of choice.
    • In Ghost Marriage, the player can have Yuu refuse Ortho's request to save Idia, but you're required to have Yuu accept in order to progress in the story.
    • Some of Yuu's dialogue options are the same sentiment, just reworded to match whether they're using polite language or more casual language.
    • In the Wish Upon A Star event, the player, through the limited gameplay responses, has to give their wish over to Grim.
  • Canon Name: "Yuu" if a name isn't chosen by the player. This has carried over to the adaptations, as stand-in characters for Yuu have some form of "Yuu" in their names, such as Enma "Yuu"ken and Kuroki "Yuu"ya.
  • Chronic Hero Syndrome: Some of the dialogue choices and story dialogue imply that they have this trait. Lampshaded by Azul and Leona, who wonder why Yuu would go so far to free the students under Azul's contract when they aren't even involved and don't personally know the victims, apart from Ace, Deuce, and Grim.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Some of the dialogue choices that you can pick make them this. They are also prone to commenting on some of the ridiculous happenings around them. One early example is when they attempt to get Ace and Deuce to work together with them and Grim at Dwarfs' Mine.
Yuu: Then let's face expulsion together.
    • This gets played up further in the English localization where some of the dialogue choices include "Allow me to introduce you to the lounge sofa." and "Please! I don't have Dental Insurance!".
  • Demoted to Extra: They’re only the primary point-of-view character in the main story. Due to the Ensemble Cast nature of the events, they can potentially be absent or appear less frequently in certain event story chapters as the perspective shifts to another character (or characters) that the story is focusing on. They also rarely show up in the personal stories of the other characters, as those tend to focus on the interactions between the other Night Raven College students. The only personal stories to avert this trope are the first sets of the Birthday personal stories, where the respective birthday boy is being interviewed by Yuu.
  • Disability Immunity: In "Glorious Masquerade", Yuu being inherently magicless means that they are the only one safe from the parasitic Crimson Flowers that are sprouting about the City of Flowers while everyone present are targeted by the Crimson Flowers due to it's nature of draining magic from it's target.
  • Distressed Dude: In Chapter 4 of the main story when they along with Grim are being held hostage in Scarabia dorm. In the absence of Ace and Deuce, they're helpless in the situation against the aggressive students on night patrol due to Yuu's inability to use magic and Grim not being that skilled overall. Thankfully near the second half of the chapter, Grim's escape plan ends up working and they end up in Octavinelle, where their situation piques the interest of Azul and company enough for them to investigate whats happening.
  • Everyone Calls Him "Barkeep": When not called by the few nicknames they've racked up, Yuu is rarely called by their name as the other characters prefer to call them "Supervisor"-insert honorific (if an honorific is used at all) instead after the title is given to them in the prologue.
  • Featureless Protagonist: The game version of Yuu has no canon design. Averted in the novel and manga adaptations of the game, in which the other versions of Yuu have their appearances either described or shown.
  • Fire-Forged Friends: They become this with Ace, Deuce and Grim throughout the main story.
  • Fish out of Water: Due to being trapped in another world, this is a given.
  • The Gadfly: Tapping on certain characters on the home screen reveals that Yuu is poking them, tugging on their sleeves or outright hitting them, much to some of the characters’ annoyance.
  • Gender-Blender Name: 'Yuu' is a unisex name.
  • Gender-Inclusive Writing: Dialogue addressing Yuu indirectly avoids the usage of pronouns to avoid disrupting their Audience Surrogate status. Characters will instead refer to Yuu by name, nickname, or by the title "Supervisor" with any attached honorifics when talking about them.
  • Hello, [Insert Name Here]: The story's default name for them is Yuu, but players can change the story name to whatever they want. Most characters just call them 'Supervisor' (the title they're given by Crowley in the prologue) regardless of what you name them.
  • Hidden Depths:
    • In Harveston's Kelkkarotu, Yuu is skilled in playing the flute. This also translates into playing the bugle as well in White Rabbit Fest.
    • In contrast to their skills in the instruments, they are bad at singing according to Azul in his school uniform R card voice line.
    • Ace's Halloween card has him commenting that Yuu's pretty good at basketball (or at least passing the ball) and should consider joining the team.
  • Informed Ability: According to Silver in one of his home screen dialogues, Yuu is skilled with a sword. The player never sees this and it has yet to come into play in the story proper. Averted in the Manga adaptation in which Yuuken is depicted as an active participant in Kendo activities to the point of being the captain of his team.
  • In-Series Nickname:
    • Leona calls them "Herbivore".
    • Gets called "Shrimp" note  by Floyd.
    • Rook calls them "Trickster".
    • Malleus calls them "Child of Man".
  • Jerkass: Downplayed, especially when compared to most of the main cast, but Yuu is shown to have some meaner tendencies through their dialogue, chosen or otherwise. Ace and Grim have suggested that they’re known to be "cold" at times, with even Deuce being shocked at how brusque they can be. In general, Yuu is rather neutral, if not occasionally playful and curious (according to Home Screen dialogue), however, the main story and events suggest that the meaner side of their characterization is canon as well.
  • Lack of Empathy: You can play Yuu as this in the Ghost Marriage event. Despite being aware that Idia will essentially die and never be seen again should he marry the ghost bride, Yuu doesn't seem to care all that much. Later in the event, the player can either choose to make Yuu care and scold the others for making fun of Idia's situation or stick to their guns and remain apathetic toward his situation. You can also make Yuu reject Ortho's request for you to help Idia, but the game will force you to do it anyway if you want to progress at all.
  • Loser Protagonist: Is considered to be this by most of the cast, as everyone they interact with can use magic while they cannot. Crowley ends up assigning them the beast tamer role in the prologue due to seeing that their ability to command the mages in battle could be useful, but admits that the function is mediocre.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: In Chapter 7, Malleus asked them if they had the option to stay while still being able to see their loved ones instead of leaving, would Yuu take that option. Yuu says that they would and that people who don't feel lonely over separations don't exist. This ultimately convinced and gave Malleus the push for his plan and shape him to be the Arc Villain of the chapter.
  • No Sense of Humor: The player can play Yuu as this depending on the chosen dialogue options.
  • Odd Name Out: Their Canon Name is 'Yuu', which Ace will remark on as being weird in the prologue. Considering the names of everyone else in the cast, it does stand out as the only Japanese sounding name.
  • Only Sane Man: Yuu is often the only one who comments on the ridiculousness of what is going on around them. Unfortunately, they can also easily get carried along with the flow of the situation.
  • Pensieve Flashback: Since staying at Ramshackle dorm, Yuu's been having "dreams" from the mirror in their room to scenes of the Disney movie the chapter is based on. It becomes clear that the visions are something important in chapter 3, as Yuu is nowhere near the mirror yet still has the same flashbacks. Then in episode 5 they receive another involving the Evil Queen, the sound of the clopping horses of the Black Carriage and a vision of an overblotted Grim wreaking havoc in Night Raven College, but this time in static. It revealed that its actually the memories of Mickey Mouse, who, through Shared Dreams, have been the source of the visions.
  • Pinball Protagonist: Yuu is this in the main story. They don’t really do anything other than commentate on and react to the things happening around them, despite their beast tamer role and hand in solving the problems of each dorm being propped up as important by Crowley (who admitted that the role is mediocre) and Jamil respectively, the latter of whom was likely being facetious in order to earn their trust. While Yuu will sometimes be shown devising plans, it’s usually left to Grim, Ace, and Deuce to influence the plot enough to move it along with the help of the other members of the cast. The trio are also the ones with a majority of the dialogue, delivering The Reason You Suck speeches and defeating Overblot victims before their rampages can do any serious harm to the school. For the most part, Yuu is often just along for the ride with their presence having very little effect on what happens. This is justified by the fact that as the resident Un-Sorcerer, they lack the means to be on the offensive and could only react.
  • Player Character: Despite being a character that's supposed to represent you, the player, it's made clear that Yuu has a personality and characterization of their own beyond what can be chosen for them very early on in the story.
  • Protagonist Without a Past: Not much is known about Yuu other than them being from another world and that they're implied to be connected to Twisted Wonderland, after all.
  • Punny Name: The protagonist is named Yuu. As in, You.
  • The Quiet One: While it's never pointed out by the other characters that they're quiet, their dialogue is limited to what can be chosen for them by the player, and it's rare that dialogue options pop up during ongoing conversations between the characters. Because of this, Grim is usually the one that does the talking for Yuu when the situation calls for it.
  • Series Goal: Yuu's ultimate goal is to return their original world after being suddenly transported to Twisted Wonderland. All while having to navigate through the personal issues of many NRC upperclassmen coming to a literal boil.
  • Shared Dream: In Chapter 5 finale, it is revealed that Mickey was able to communicate with Yuu inside the mirror through the former's dreams. However, Mickey can't cross between his world and Twisted Wonderland.
  • Ship Tease: This is at first an Averted Trope, but then turns to a Downplayed Trope as time goes on.
    • For the most part in regards to the aversion of this trope, Yuu treats the other students as neutrally as they are treated in return (with the occasional blunt line of dialogue should the player choose it), and the players are never given the option to flirt or suggest that they have any sort of favoritism for any of the characters note . The only character Yuu does show favoritism toward is Grim, however little it is shown and/or told about note . Considering what Grim is, however, it's more akin to getting attached to a pet animal or a surrogate Annoying Younger Sibling than anything.
    • Downplayed Trope wise, The closest contender Yuu would have to a Ship Tease with anybody (Grim not withstanding) is Malleus. To wit, while their neutral stance on the rest of the cast still applies here, their interactions with Malleus is far more amiable in comparison to the other students (Save for Ace and Deuce) in the main story. Despite initially thinking Malleus to be weird and arrogant, their interactions grew friendlier throughout the main story. They invited Malleus to watch the VDC and even after they finally knew that Malleus is the feared Diasomnia Dorm Leader late in the Pomefiore chapter, they still called Malleus by the nickname they gave to him and don't care about his position as the strongest magician or the fact that he's to be the king of the "Valley of Thorns" in the future. In Malleus's birthday personal story, Yuu greets Malleus by adding that the clothes suit him in contrast their usual greetings of the other boys, though they did also compliment Idia in his interview after his initial comment. They also suggest that they all eat cake together when Malleus tells Yuu of why he doesn't like whole cake, implying that Yuu decided to stay with Malleus during his birthday party instead of leaving after the interview. It's unknown if these interactions are meant to be seen as romantic, however, as Malleus seems happier to have found a friend in someone.
  • Sir Not-Appearing-in-This-Trailer: The official trailer released for the game's first anniversary depicts all of the events that occurred throughout the year from Grim’s perspective. Yuu is nowhere in sight for a majority of the trailer except maybe an elbow at the last shot.
    • The second anniversary trailer also has no Yuu in sight, although this time around it can be interpreted that they are the one holding the camera and taking pictures of everyone.
  • Stranger in a Strange School: A given due to getting Trapped in Another World.
  • Suddenly Shouting: In the prologue you have a choice to do this when Yuu finally becomes tired of Ace, Deuce and Grim bickering. The other choice is to snark and say that they'll get expelled together with the snark leaning on the fact that Yuu isn't enrolled into the school and being "expelled" will do nothing to them.
  • Supporting Protagonist: Is the player character of whom we view the occurrences of Night Raven College through the eyes of but isn’t the focal character of the story.
  • Talking in Your Dreams: From Chapter 3 onwards, Yuu can talk to Mickey Mouse via their bedroom mirror in some of their dreams, although as the morning after one such dream Grim complains that Yuu stepped on his tail in the middle of the night (which they dreamed of doing while moving closer to the mirror), it's unclear if they were sleepwalking while dreaming or if they weren't dreaming at all.
  • The Main Characters Do Everything: Somehow ends up involved in the solving of the problems of the schools various dorms, mainly with the help of featured characters thanks to The Call Knows Where You Live. By Chapter 4, according to Jamil, the other students have taken notice of this.
  • Those Two Guys: Paired with Grim in and out of the main story. Even when an event story shifts the perspective onto another character, they’re always with Grim doing something off-screen.
  • Trapped in Another World: Their status as they are a human from our world who got taken by the Black Carriage to Night Raven College. Or at least, the Alternate Universe of our world where Disney Animated Canon as a whole does not exist.
  • True Companions: With Ace and Deuce in the main story. It's exemplified in chapter 4 when Grim sends out a message for help when he and Yuu are being held hostage in the Scarabia. Deuce and Ace spend the entirety of the chapter using public transport to come back to the college and save them. By the time they arrive, the situation has been dealt with, however.
  • Uncertain Doom: Until Chapter 6 was officially released in Late August 2021, their fate after being attacked by Grim was left unknown as to whether or not they survive the attack. As in Chapter 6, it was revealed that Yuu's injuries weren't fatal and that they survived, but they have a large scratch on their hand from Grim's claws.
  • Un-Sorcerer: Due to being from an Alternate Universe where magic doesn't exist, they're the sole non-magic user in a school full of wizards-in-training. Some of the other characters occasionally make fun of them for this.
  • Unfazed Everyman: They become this throughout the story, likely due to how long they've been in Twisted Wonderland by that point.
  • The Voiceless: The player can choose their dialogue options, but they are never heard speaking and do not have a voice actor in the game.

    Grim
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/college_chara_grim_alt.png
A magical cat
Voiced by: Noriaki Sugiyama
Twisted from: ???
Grade: First yearnote

A magic-wielding monster who becomes the protagonist's companion. His wish is to enroll in Night Raven College, but he is unsuccessful until he teams up with the protagonist.

  • Ain't Too Proud to Beg: In Chapter 6, Grim, who is scared and confused as he tries to escape from Charon Op force but fails, begs Yuu to save him after they unexpectedly reunite in the destroyed Ramshackle dorm.
  • Ambiguous Situation: Despite existing in Twisted Wonderland and being a magic user, Grim doesn’t appear to know much of anything about their world from not knowing about The Great Seven or any of Twisted Wonderlands traditions. Unlike Yuu whose excuse is that they’re from another world, it’s currently unknown why Grim lacks knowledge about Twisted Wonderland.
  • Audience Surrogate: Is just as unaware about how the world of Twisted Wonderland works as Yuu is, despite being a magic user and knowing about Night Raven College.
  • Berserk Button: Being called a "weasel"note  or a "cat", not that anyone cares.
  • Big Eater: Grim is obsessed with any kind of food he wants to eat and always wants to be first in line in the cafeteria. He is willing to cut in line ahead of other people in order to get the food he wants to eat. This is put in a darker light when he started to become outright vicious when he ate the black stone left from Vil's overblot, that he attacked Yuu for, in his black stone euphoria induced mind, attempting to take the stone away from him.
  • Book Dumb: Dumb enough that he would take Azul's contract for test marks. A voice line with Crewel also has Yuu looking away when Crewel declares that he wouldn't accept students under his tutelage getting horrible grades, heavily implying that Grim is this trope and this affects his grades together with Yuu's own.
  • Broken Tears: Grim shed these tears after he remembers what he did to Yuu and fears he won’t be able to return to the Ramshackle dorm anymore.
  • Butt-Monkey: Is frequently teased by the other characters and gets his comeuppance for his arrogance just as often.
  • Cartoon Creature: Is classified as a monster because he’s a talking animal creature, but looks like a sort of stylized cat, which most characters assume he is at first glance.
  • Cats Are Magic: Is a cat-themed creature who can wield magic such as summoning blue fire.
  • Cats Are Superior: Very much believes he is the greatest magician in all of Twisted Wonderland, not to mention his interactions with Yuu seems to be based on the saying that "cats have staff".
  • Cheshire Cat Grin: Sports one at times.
  • Cutlery Escape Aid: Suggests to Yuu that they use the spoon he brought with him from dinner to dig through the floor and escape when they're being held hostage by the Scarabian students in Chapter 4. Thankfully for him, it ends up working.
  • Deuteragonist: Zig-zagged. As the Series Mascot and side-kick to Yuu, the point-of-view character of the main story, he is technically this. Though since Yuu ultimately fills more of a Supporting Protagonist role, he could also be counted as the protagonist since he along with Deuce and Ace are the primary movers of the main storyline. He’s also the one doing all the talking especially when it comes down to the important conversations, whereas Yuu is limited to a few occasional dialogue boxes. His being the protagonist is played up in the game's first anniversary trailer, in which all the events are hoped to have occurred from his perspective without Yuu in sight.
Thankfully near the second half of the chapter, Grim's escape plan ends up working and they wind up in Octavinelle, where their situation peaks the interest of Azul and company enough for them to investigate whats happening.
  • Does This Remind You of Anything?: Grim is shown to have been Eating the Enemy in regards to the stones that are left from the Overblots. Grim grows to be unnervingly addicted to eating them once he ate the fifth stone left from Jamil's overblot and acted like he is in an eerily manic, euphoric, high once he ate the stone left from Vil's overblot and then attacked Yuu in the assumption that they have come to take the stone away from him. It sounds as if the stones left from the overblots are the drugs, and Grim is the drug addict who has become dependent over them.
  • Dull Eyes of Unhappiness: He momentarily sports these when he eats the black stone left over from Jamil's Overblot, murmuring about how he wants to eat more of them and laughing creepily as if brainwashed at the end… before going back to normal in the following chapter segment.
  • Eating the Enemy: He has eaten stones made up of the leftovers of Overblots, including that of the prologue monster in Dwarf Woodlands. According to him, they taste delicious and each one is different from the last. When he has eaten about five, he begins to act strange. When he eats six, he becomes outright vicious.
  • Fire-Forged Friends: Becomes this with Yuu, Ace and Deuce over the course of the main story.
  • Foreshadowing: A lot of Grim's voice lines and snippets found throughout event stories all move to show that Grim's overblot and evolution to be the monster we see in the prologue's Hopeless Boss Fight is an inevitable Foregone Conclusion and that there is absolutely nothing that can be done about it, such as how Grim wishes that he'd grow big in his Platinum Birthday card and Wish Upon a Star. Additionally, his Playful Land outfit is a reference to Lampwick, who ended up facing a horrible fate of staying transformed as a Donkey for the rest of his life in the original movie, to further cement the inevitability of Grim's eventual transformation.
  • Glowing Eyes of Doom: Starts sporting these when he eats the stone left from Vil's overblot and growing manic.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: In "Lost in the Book with Stitch", he gets jealous of Stitch himself for despite not having magic, Stitch can do a lot of things better than Grim did and was able to easily get the other casts, Yuu included, to warm up to Stitch.
  • Guest-Star Party Member: Can be called to aid in story battles, but only as a guest. This gets averted with his Anniversary cards.
  • In-Series Nickname:
    • Floyd calls him "Seal" note .
    • Rook calls him "Monsieur Hirsute".
  • Informed Species: Played for Laughs. In the prologue, Grim was called a raccoon dog on numerous occasions... even though he looks nothing like a raccoon dog, instead resembling a sort of stylized cat. He denies being either.
  • The Main Characters Do Everything: Somehow ends up helping to solve the problems of each respective dorm in the main story with the help of the featured characters, to the point where the other students have apparently taken note of it, according to Jamil. He’ll also sometimes contribute to the problems at times due to his ego.
  • Meaningful Name: His name appears to be a reference to the Brothers Grimm, who are famed for their writings of Fairy Tales which Disney adapted a number of their animated movies from.
  • Mouthy Kid: While Grim's personality actually veers closer to a Bratty Half-Pint than most examples of this trope, Grim actually does call out on the characters actions if he thinks they're in the wrong from time to time, such as Riddle's tyrannical rule of the dorm in the Heartslabyul chapter and he eventually interacted with the rest of the Twisted Wonderland cast in good terms unlike the regular Bratty Half-Pint.
  • Mushroom Samba: Goes into a rather, darker, violent one from eating the black stones left from the overblots starting from the stone left from Jamil's overblot, with Grim becoming outright unhinged to a point of attacking Yuu by the time Vil overblotted.
  • Non-Human Sidekick: To Yuu, although in Grim's view, it's Yuu who's the "henchman".
  • Playing with Fire: Initially his only ability until he's enrolled alongside Yuu.
  • Promoted to Playable: Grim was originally a Story Mode-exclusive guest character, but he's finally an obtainable character in commemoration of the 1st year anniversary of Twisted Wonderland.
  • Refusal of the Call: Tries to invoke this in Chapter 4 of the main story after having since grown tired of solving the problems of the previous three dorms. Jamil hypnotizes Yuu into accepting an invitation to get involved on his behalf, which forces him to participate, much to his chagrin.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: Grim intends to do this a few times.
    • In Prologue 12, Grim ditches Ace and Yuu because he doesn't want to finish washing all 100 windows.
    • In Chapter 1 of the main story, Grim tries to skip classes because he doesn't want to go to listen to boring lectures all day. However, Ace and Deuce catch Grim running away.
    • In Episode of Heartslabyul, Grim runs away after he accidentally charred one of the Great Seven statues and refuses to be caught by the headmaster again.
  • Series Mascot: Seems to fit the bill for the game in general.
  • Small Name, Big Ego: Claims that he will become the greatest magician, but not a lot of people take him seriously.
  • Suspiciously Specific Denial: One of Grim's voiced lines when picking lessons has him denying Yuu's claim that he has any disliked subject.
Grim: Classes I don't like...? O- of course I can do anything!
  • The Face: As a duo with Yuu, he’s usually the one doing the talking. Characters will also be shown interacting with him first before asking Yuu anything.
  • Those Two Guys: Paired with Yuu in and out of the main story. Even when an event story shifts the perspective onto another character, he’s always with Yuu.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Tuna cans.
  • Ungrateful Bastard: In the Wish Upon A Star event, Crowley reveals to Yuu and Grim that since they constitute as one student, they only have one wishing star to use between the two of them, meaning only one of them will be able to make a wish. While Yuu selflessly gives the wish to Grim, who in turn instead of saying "Thank you" or offering to wish for something that might benefit both of them simply says he won’t share his tuna cans with them and rushes them off to turn in the star crystal before Yuu can change their mind.
    • The English translation retcons this moment, instead having Grim wish to become a powerful mage and showing no ungratefulness towards Yuu for giving up their chance to wish for something.
  • Verbal Tic: In spoken dialogue, he ends most phrases with "dazo".
  • Voice for the Voiceless: Since Yuu rarely talks, Grim usually does the talking on their behalf in the story and events.

The Comic

    In general

  • Adaptation Deviation: A lot of them are depicted to have their own traits and backstories instead of being a player insert to showcase that “Yuu” can be ‘’any’’ kind of individual. They also averted the Protagonist Without a Past aspect of the canonical Yuu in game as well.
  • Foil: All of the comic’s Yuu so far are depicted to have traits opposite of the featured dorm leader of the arc they debuted in, this doubled as a Mirror Character example as they serve to be virtuous foils to the overblot victims.
    • Yuuken and Riddle are both second years and once someone of a position of authority in some level (Kendo club captainship for Yuuken, Heartslabyul dorm leader for Riddle. However, Riddle is short, scrawny and hot-tempered while Yuuken is tall, stoic, and is a lot more patient and understanding. Riddle is also fairly dependent on his magic due to being a Squishy Wizard while Yuuken is a Badass Normal.
    • Leona and Yuuka both had scars and physically inclined. However, Leona is Brilliant, but Lazy, while Yuuka is a hard worker and keeps up her training even after being brought to another world.
    • Yuuta and Azul initially did not start out this way until Azul's past was revealed. Azul is greedy and has no confidence in his own self due to the bullying he suffered that he changed his image and refrained from eating as much as he used to out of fear of returning to his weak self. Yuuta, on the other hand, is a Supreme Chef and a Big Fun person who is comfortable in his own body and is confident to speak out and show his love and appreciation for food.
  • Rotating Protagonist: While the game and novel adaptations stick to the point of view of one "Yuu" consistently, the comics rotate and change the featured "Yuu"'s for each book adaptation.

    Enma Yuuken

Enma Yuuken

Grade: Second yearnote ; First yearnote

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/enma_yuuken.png

The first manga portrayal of Yuu that was first introduced in the story Disney Twisted Wonderland - Episode of Heartslabyul.

  • The Ace: He is considered such by the members of his original school's Kendo club.
  • Adaptation Deviation: Based on what little the player does know about Yuu from the game's universe, the official comic version of Yuu does deviate a bit.
    • The game's Yuu is given the nickname “shrimp” by Floyd, which in normal circumstances would imply that they have a small stature, and the game has implied on various occasions that Yuu is on the small side (such as their clothing being slightly too big). In contrast, Yuuken is shown to be tall and muscular.
    • The game's Yuu has a politer tone, and gender neutral way of speaking so as to make it easier for players to self-insert. Meanwhile, Yuuken uses the typically more masculine tone while he speaks.
    • Unlike the game choosing the Protagonist Without a Past route for Yuu, Yuuken's life before being transported into Twisted Wonderland is briefly shown. The reader also sees how he was kidnapped, with him having been knocked out by the horse carriage that was briefly shown in the game's prologue.
    • The manga's lead character has the full name Enma Yuuken. It’s unknown if the game's version of Yuu has a full name, or if their name is simply just Yuu without any add-ons, however by default they are called Yuu in the game.
    • Unlike the game, where the game's Yuu is brought to Twisted Wonderland without anything to their name, Yuuken still has his school bag and Kendo blade, along with his wallet and phone.
  • Adaptation Expansion: The manga expands on what Yuuken's life was like and how he was transported to Twisted Wonderland. He was the vice captain of the Kendo club and a second year at his school.
  • Ambiguous Gender: Averted. Unlike the game's version of Yuu who acts as a self-insert for the player for the most part and therefore lacks a definitive gender outside of some hints toward what it might be, Yuuken is unambiguously male.
  • Badass Normal: Unlike Yuu from the game who doesn't do much beside commanding students to work together in battles, Yuuken (who is a normal human) is very active and able to knock out Grim (a magical creature) during their second encounter with a push broom. He can defeat Overblot Riddle on his own without any assists from Ace, Deuce, and Grim. He manages to dodge Overblot Riddle’s attacks and beat him in a kendo-style battle.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: He has little patience for the nonsense of the other characters have him put up with.
  • Chronic Hero Syndrome: Yuuken has a habit of helping people in need or saving them in dangerous situations. He is willing to help injured Deuce (who he just met) from the piles of rubble instead of running away from the Faceless Monster as Ace and Grim did. He doesn't care what happens to him, even if he almost gets killed or injured, as long as the people he saves are alright.
  • Cool Big Bro: His Establishing Character Moment has him revealed to be a good senior to one of the juniors lagging behind compared to the other members of the Kendo club.
  • Defeat Equals Friendship: While friendship might be a teensy bit of a stretch, Yuuken fully earns Riddle's respect after Yuuken is able to use his kendo skills to bring Riddle out of overblot by himself.
  • Diving Save: Yuuken tackles Riddle out of the way of Grim's fire magic (although it wasn't necessary since Riddle is a trained magic user and he can protect himself) when he thought Riddle was attempting to stop Grim alone. Riddle does not take too kindly to this.
  • Featureless Protagonist: Averted. Unlike Yuu, Yuuken has been given a physical depiction.
  • Gentle Giant: He as tall or taller than some of the other characters in the cast but he's a fairly kind person.
  • Hunk: Yuuken appears to be a tall, muscular guy and he's quite handsome for an average teenager.
  • Inseries Nickname: He's nicknamed "Yuu" by the characters because they find it difficult to pronounce his full name.
  • Kendo Team Captain: He was the vice captain of the kendo team before being kidnapped to Twisted Wonderland.
  • Last-Name Basis: Downplayed. Yuuken's kendo club members refer to him by his last name. When Yuuken told Crowley his full name, he calls him by his first name. However, Crowley has no idea about Japan or their culture, it's possible Crowley thought "Yuuken" is his last name and his family name "Enma" is his first name.
  • Meaningful Name: His given name "Yuuken" (雄 剣) contains the kanji for "hero/male" and "sword". The manga confirm this version of Yuu is male and references him being the vice captain of the Kendo Club at his school.
  • Nerves of Steel: Yuuken's moral code is supported by his strength, and he rarely shows fear in situations, such as when he didn't flinch when Leona was about to kick him.
  • Nice Guy: Despite his intimidating appearance, he's not a bad guy and does what he can to help others.
  • Only Known by Their Nickname: Yuuken is only referred to as "Yuu" by Ace and Deuce since it is hard for them to remember and pronounce his full name.
  • The Protagonist: Introduced to be this for the Twisted Wonderland manga adaptation.
  • Protagonist Without a Past: Averted. Unlike Yuu, the reader gets a glimpse of Yuuken’s life before he’s forcibly whisked away to Twisted Wonderland.
  • Trapped in Another World: Wakes up in the world of Twisted Wonderland after being knocked out by a horse-drawn carriage. Currently, he has no idea how to get back to his world.
  • Unfazed Everyman: He seems to adapt to his situation fairly quickly, perhaps even quicker than Yuu did.
  • Younger Than They Look: His height and muscular build makes him look a bit older than the average teenager.

    Hirasaka Yuuka

Hirasaka Yuuka

Grade: Second yearnote ; First yearnote

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/yuuka_hirasaka.png

The second manga portrayal of Yuu that debuted in Disney Twisted Wonderland - Episode of Savanaclaw.

  • Adaptation Deviation: In a similar case to Yuuken, Yuuka also deviated from the canonical Yuu of the games.
    • Yuuka does Judo and is also The Ace of her school's Judo club contrasting Yuu's Non-Action Guy status in the games. How she is brought to Twisted Wonderland is also shown.
    • She's also female, albeit a Bifauxnen, whereas the original Yuu's gender is never directly alluded to.
  • Ambiguous Situation:
    • Whether or not headmaster Crowley is aware that she isn't a male student. While she alludes to him and his allowing her to stay in the Ramshackle dorm, it's described as being for the same reason that the other versions of Yuu ended up in the dorm; because she's magicless. It's entirely possible that the conversation from the game's prologue played out the same way, with Crowley likely assuming that Yuuka is male and her not correcting him, however, the story itself glosses over it and it isn't addressed when he shows up later in chapter 1.
    • It's also ambiguous as to whether Ace, Deuce, and Grim are aware that Yuuka is female.
  • As You Know: Chapter 1 has a brief recap sequence concerning the events of Heartslabyul and Riddle overblotting.
  • Badass Normal: Following Yuuken with Kendo, Yuuka does Judo and is The Ace of her school's Judo club.
  • Bifauxnen: Has Boyish Short Hair and an androgynous look that could make her be mistaken for a boy. Her appearance answers how a female version of Yuu could end up in an all-boys school and go unnoticed by the male characters in the cast.
  • Boyish Short Hair: Has short hair that, combined with her androgynous appearance, helps her blend in with her male schoolmates better.
  • Breaking Old Trends: Yuuka is the first "Yuu" who is depicted as being female among the adaptations of Twisted Wonderland.
  • Contrasting Sequel Main Character: Contrasts the Episode of Heartslabyul protagonist Enma Yuuken:
    • Yuuken is a male depiction of Yuu while Yuuka is female.
    • Yuuka is the captain of the Judo club rather than Kendo.
    • Yuuka is on the shorter side, appearing to be around the same height as Ace, while Yuuken was hulking and towered over both Ace and Deuce when standing beside them.
    • There's also a difference in their body types, as Yuuka is less visibly muscular than Yuuken was shown to be.
  • Good Scars, Evil Scars: She has a line scar on her right forehead.
  • Identical Stranger: Perhaps unintentional. She resembles a gender-bent version of Deuce.
  • In-Series Nickname: All of the characters refer to her as "Yuu".
  • Kindhearted Cat Lover: Before the Black Carriage brought Yuuka away, Yuuka is shown checking in on an abandoned kitten and sheltering it from the rain with her umbrella.
  • Meaningful Name: Her given name "Yuuka" (悠河), contains the kanji for "reason", "fragrance" and "flower".
  • One of the Boys: By virtue of being the only female student in her school, although it's not yet touched upon as to whether the other characters are even aware that she's female. As with Yuu from the game and other continuities, Yuuka's core friend group consists of Ace, Deuce, and Grim, all three of whom are male.
  • The Smurfette Principle: She's this by virtue of being the sole female character in an otherwise male main cast.
  • Tomboy: Practices Judo and has a tomboyish personality.
  • Trapped in Another World: Per usual with Yuu's character, however, by the time the players meet this version of Yuu, she's already gotten used to her situation.
  • Wholesome Crossdresser: Wears the standard Night Raven uniform, which is designed for males.

    Mito Yuuta

Mito Yuuta

Grade: First yearnote

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/the_comic_episode_of_octavinelle_yuuta.png

The third manga portrayal of Yuu debuted in Disney Twisted Wonderland - Episode of Octavinelle.

  • Adaptation Deviation: In a similar case to Yuuken and Yuuka, Yuuta also deviated from the canonical Yuu of the games. Among some of the deviation in his story is that unlike the canonical Yuu who had to prove their stay in Savanaclaw by fighting one of the students, Yuuta instead wins Leona over through his cooking.
  • As You Know: Like Yuuka, Chapter 1 has a brief recap sequence concerning the events of Heartslabyul and Savanaclaw.
  • Berserk Button: He dislikes people just grabbing food and walking off instead of sitting down to enjoy it. When Grim attempts to grab the food that Yuuta made and run off, he grabs his tail and scolds him.
  • Big Fun: The only Yuu to be overweight and a big eater who is very friendly to everyone.
  • Contrasting Sequel Main Character: Contrasts the Episode of Heartslabyul protagonist Enma Yuuken and Episode of Savanaclaw heroine Hirasaka Yuuka:
    • Yuuta took a part-time job at his father’s restaurant instead of joining club activities at his school.
    • Yuuta is shorter than Yuuken and Yuuta.
    • Yuuken and Yuuta are physically fit, while Yuuta is overweight.
  • Featureless Protagonist: Averted. Unlike Yuu, Yuuta has been given a physical depiction.
  • Guile Hero: Upon seeing Grim, Deuce, and Ace being hauled off by the mysterious anemones, Yuuta asks Jack Howl to accompany him to investigate, simply because he was nearby and unaffected. When Jack refuses, saying it isn't his problem, Yuu assures him that that's alright- they're dealing with the unknown, so it's reasonable to be scared. Naturally, Jack immediately demands to know who he's calling a coward, and heads off with Yuu to prove him wrong.
  • In-Series Nickname: All of the characters refer to him as "Yuu".
  • Meaningful Name: His given name "Yuuta" (宥太) contains the kanji for "Excellent" and "Big".
  • Missing Mom: According to the special content of Episode of Octavinelle Volume 1, Yuuta was raised by his father, a single parent. There is no mention of what happened to Yuuta’s mother and why she wasn’t part of Yuuta’s life.
  • Supreme Chef: Yuuta is very skilled at cooking meals during his free time. This is Justified as he helped with his father's restaurant and was on his way to deliver an order when he was brought to Twisted Wonderland. We get to see this when Yuuta cooks for Leona to earn his temporary stay in Savanaclaw and got Leona's approval, which is a big feat considering that in-game, Leona's one of the pickier and harsher judges in the Master chef series events.

Light Novel

    Kuroki Yuuya

Kuroki Yuuya

The novel version of Yuu that was first introduced in the story Disney Twisted-Wonderland Episode 1: Shinku no Bо̄kun.

  • Featureless Protagonist: Downplayed. There are no illustrations of Yuuya, but there are a few descriptions of him. He is Japanese with short brown hair and similar height to Ace and Deuce.
  • Friendless Background: Before Yuuya meets Grim, Ace, and Deuce, he doesn’t have any friends in his original world. He thinks the closer he gets to someone, the higher the possibility of conflict. This is why he prefers to keep his distance from everyone.
  • Meaningful Name: His given name "Yuuya" (優也) contains the kanji for "superiority" and "call".
  • Nervous Wreck: In contrast to the game's version of Yuu who is shown to be a Deadpan Snarker at times and Yuuken, who is very active in taking action when prompted, Yuuya is heavily anxious and gets nervous easily.
  • The Protagonist: Introduced to be this for the Twisted Wonderland novel adaptation.
