Ignihyde

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ignihydelogo_9.png
Founded on the perseverance of the King of the Underworld, the students of Ignihyde specialize in research concerning the integration of magic with technology. However, they're very reserved and don't interact with the other dorms much.

The dorm and its members are twisted from Hercules.

  • Leitmotif: Ignihyde's dorm music has a techno-esque feel to it, fitting Ignihyde's specialization in Magitek.
  • Meaningful Name: "Ignis" is Latin for "flame" and "Hyde" bares resemblance to Hades (both the character and the underworld).
  • Shrinking Violet: Save for Ortho who has no issue interacting with students in the other dorms, Ignihyde residents are known to be introverted.
  • Techno Wizard: As Ignihyde specializes in Magitek, members of Ignihyde dorm are essentially this.

    Idia Shroud
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ignihyde_chara_idia_detail_a.png
Voiced by: Kōki Uchiyama
Twisted from: Hades
Grade: Third year

The dorm leader of Ignihyde. A shy and quiet introvert who tends to stay locked in his room. However, he seems to have a different persona online.

  • Accidental Murder: Part of his past. At age 10, Idia hacked the system to have an adventure with the still alive Ortho but a Phantom went loose when he hacked the security system and said Phantom went on to attack and kill Ortho. The death haunts Idia for years.
  • Ambiguously Human: Lilia implies that Idia is human in the event ''Ghost Marriage,' but with features such as hair made entirely of blue flames, impossibly pale skin, pointy teeth and naturally blue tinted lips, there is left room for doubt. Other humans introduced have been identical to humans of the player's world, sans their natural unique hair and eye colors. While he doesn't fit into the description of the other two races- fae or beastman, him being at least completely human seems questionable. Book 6 reveals that the Shrouds are human, but of a cursed lineage, resulting in their easily identifiable appearance.
  • And Now You Must Marry Me: The premise of the Ghost Marriage event is that Idia is kidnapped by the ghost princess Eliza, who's decided he's her ideal bridegroom no matter what he says to the contrary.
  • Berserk Button: In Idia’s SSR Dorm Uniform personal story, Idia hates when someone insults or cyber-bullying his favorite band, Fates on the Edge website. He will use hacking skills to find their IP, ban users' access, and delete their comments.
  • Big Brother Instinct: After Idia found out the android Ortho had been hijacked by the real Ortho, he abandon his duty as acting captain and go straight to Tartarus to reunite with his brother. Idia becomes determined to free his brother from his seal prison which leads Idia to overblotting due to being surrounded by a lot of blots. A look into his past reveals that some of this is fueled by his guilt and grief for letting the original Ortho die 8 years ago. Even in an overblot state, Idia worries for Ortho's state first than he worries about himself.
  • Black Knight: Idia wears dark futuristic armor in his overblot form.
  • Breaking the Fourth Wall: In his ceremonial robe SR version's personal story, he refers to Malleus as a "SSR character".
  • Brilliant, but Lazy: He's an intelligent and extremely skilled technician who can invent or upgrade any piece of Magitek on the spot, but he spends most of his time watching anime and playing video games, and he can't be bothered to put effort into anything that he isn't already interested in. This is partly Lampshaded during Glorious Masquerade. Malleus and Azul demand that Idia do something useful and help fend off the firelotuses instead of just coasting by, and he uses a cheap magical firework that he upgraded to be a hundred times more powerful, just because he could.
  • Busman's Vocabulary: Since video games are what Idia understands, he applies game mechanics to real life, e.g. calling his peers NPCs and stressful situations QTEs.
  • Butt-Monkey: Frequently on the receiving end of the short stick in his stories. He even lampshades how bad his luck it.
    • During the Ghost Marriage event. When news comes to light that he’s been kidnapped by ghosts to be forced into a marriage, none of the other students save for Ortho want to help him and immediately refuse when asked. Not even Yuu makes the suggestion that they should help him. It takes Crowley and Ortho blackmailing the students by threatening to post about their unwillingness to help a fellow student to the news for anyone to be moved to help him, with their motivations for doing so all being for self-serving reasons such as Vil not wanting rumors to tarnish his reputation as a celebrity. The story continues on with the characters all showing a distinct reluctance to save him from his plight.
    • His R Uniform personal story also puts his buttmonkey status on full display, as he's forced into having lunch with the three most energetic characters in the school; Kalim, Cater, and Rook which causes him to miss his important netgame. No matter how many times he says he doesn't want to go with them, the three are too wrapped up in their own excitement to hear him and drag him along with them anyway.
    • In his personal story for the Wish Upon A Star event, after being inspired by Vil, he brings a jamming device to the ceremony that prevents the ceremony attendees from taking photos and videos of him to upload to MagiCam with their phones. It's revealed a few days after that a reporter was also at the ceremony with a film camera that would not be affected by the device and they uploaded his performance to the news, anyway.
  • Cursed with Awesome: It's revealed in Chapter 6 that due to a failed rebellion against the main Jupiter family in the past, the Shroud family are struck with a curse that will prevent them from overblotting... but they will also lose the ability to use magic if they are not producing blot or in near vicinity of blot in general, hence leading to the Shroud family and S.T.Y.X being in charge of taking care of Phantoms to offset the curse. This reason is why Idia has a customized magical pen in the form of a skull drone. However, it is possible for a member of the Shroud family to overblot if they are surrounded in an area filled with an overabundance of blot that not even having a support item could offset it, and being dragged to Tartarus and surrounded near a lot of blot is what led to Idia overblotting in Chapter 6, in addition to the fact that Phantom! Ortho lured him there.
  • Cuteness Proximity: Cats. His lab coat uniform SR personal story has him attempting to pet and cuddle a wandering Grim at one point but his teeth and Slasher Smile like look when he tried to pet Grim only scared Grim away and started rumors about a ghost in the school.
  • Creepy Loner Girl: Rare male example. This doesn't stop the other characters from approaching him anyway, however.
  • Cynicism Catalyst: The original Ortho's death serve as this to Idia that by the present, he has a defeatist mindset that he can't fight his fate of becoming the future head of the Shroud family.
  • Death Seeker: Ultimately, Idia actually wished to be Together in Death with Ortho, his grief for the original Ortho's death being what led to Idia overblotting among other factors.
  • Demonic Possession: During the second Halloween event, Endless Halloween Night. Idia is one of the many students kidnapped and taken over by ghosts. His ghost in particular makes him act similarly to Leona, as lampshaded by Ace, and much to the Savanaclaw dorm leader's chagrin.
  • Disposable Fiancé: After spending the entire Ghost Marriage event fangirling over Idia's unmatched groom qualities, Eliza dumps him to marry Chubby.
  • Distressed Dude: In the Ghost Marriage event, the ghost princess Eliza kidnaps him with the intention of marrying him despite his protests. What's worse, if he marries her, he'll turn into a ghost himself.
  • Does Not Like Spam: His least favorite food is raw fish. According to his Birthday Suit SSR personal story, the reason Idia doesn't like raw fish because it's smelly and cold and the texture is slimy, slippery, and sticky.
  • Fatal Flaw: Idia was too caught up in his despair and grief over the death of the original Ortho Shroud that it led to his current defeatist opinion that he can't become anything else nor could he have the freedom to do what he wants. Said grief also affected his ability to make his own interpersonal relationships and his way of coping through Ortho's death is unhealthy and detrimental on him in the long run. When the android Ortho was hacked by the original Ortho who had now become a Phantom, Idia ended up following after him to the gate of the underworld and overblotted with him just for a chance of being able to be together with his dead brother again.
  • Fan Boy: In Idia's Birthday Suit SSR personal story, Idia is a big fan of his favorite idol group, Gakepuchimoirasu, or Gakemo for short. He loves to listen to their songs.
  • Flaming Hair: Idia’s hair becomes flaming just like his twisted counterpart in his overblot form.
  • The Friend Nobody Likes: Save for the nicer characters that interact with him normally and Ortho, it doesn't seem as if the rest of the cast care for him all that much, as evidenced by their willingness to let him to be dragged off to the afterlife in Ghost Marriage if it weren't for Crowley's intervention. To be fair, though, his inner disdain for the majority of the cast (save Ortho) is not doing him any favors.
  • Gadgeteer Genius: As the leader of Ignihyde dorm, he's naturally talented at designing and inventing technology. During the Happy Beans Day event, it's revealed that Idia even sold one of his inventions (the bean gun) on the black market under the alias "Smith".
  • Genre Savvy: Idia interprets everything through the lens of movies, anime, and video games, so he often comments on the nature of the story he's in in these terms. For example, during Glorious Masquerade, he comments that it's like he's in a horror movie where people get picked off one by one.
  • Headphones Equal Isolation: In Idia's Birthday Suit SSR personal story, the reason why Idia always wearing headphones because he likes to listen to his favorite music and shut down noises from the outside world. He dislikes interacting with people in person.
  • He Cleans Up Nicely: As he is always seen wearing a regular jersey and preferring to shut himself in his room, many of the other cast put shots at him over how he barely fits Eliza's criteria of a Prince Charming during Ghost Marriage. Come the rerun in 2021, Idia himself gets a limited ghost groom SSR and shows that yes, he does, and can look like he would fit Eliza's criteria if he puts an effort to it.
  • He's Back!: After Silver, Sebek, Grim and Yuu succeeded in awakening Lilia from his dream and escaping from Overblot Malleus with Lilia luring him away, the group is brought to the now awake Idia with Ortho's help.
  • Hikikomori: Described as one, preferring to shut himself in his room and surf the Internet.
  • I Am Not Pretty: Doesn't consider himself to be attractive despite being just as much of a pretty boy as everyone else in the cast. Dialogue confirms that he simply has a low self esteem and sees his flaming blue hair as a problem.
  • In-Series Nickname:
    • Floyd calls him "Firefly Squid" note.
    • Rook calls him "Roi de ta Chambre".
    • Leona calls him “Radish Sprout.”
  • Informed Attribute: In-Universe example. In the Ghost Marriage event, Eliza is absolutely convinced that Idia meets ALL her insane requirements to be her perfect ideal prince… while multiple characters point out he barely fits half of them. The saving grace for Idia is that at least He Cleans Up Nicely, but played straight otherwise that he has none of the personality traits that would match.
  • Irony: The character twisted from arguably the largest ham of all the Disney villains is a shy Hikikomori.
  • Jerkass: Despite his Shrinking Violet tendencies, his Ungrateful Bastard speech during the Ghost Marriage event and internal dialogue regarding the other characters reveal that he's just as much of a jerk as everyone else is.
  • Kaleidoscope Hair:
    • At the end of Idia's SSR Ghost Marriage groovy, it shows his flaming hair change colors depending on his mood. The tips of his hair turn pink when he's flustered after being complimented on how cool he is and how he looks good in a suit.
    • In Idia’s SSR Dorm Uniform groovy, his flaming hair turns fiery orange when he’s very angry after his fellow dorm members perform a cyber-attack on his favorite band, Fates on the Edge website just to back at him.
  • Leaning on the Fourth Wall: Idia sees the world in terms of game mechanics. This sometimes leads him to Lampshade the nature of the game he’s in.
Idia: So it’s about as rare as rolling four SSR’s on a single ten-pull in a gacha game with stingy draw rates.
  • Like Brother and Sister: In Harveston’s Kelkkarotu event story, Idia reveals he doesn’t have any blood-related siblings other than Ortho. To him, he thinks of Ortho as his younger brother even though he’s a robot.
  • Locked Out of the Loop: Idia is unaware of being trapped inside Malleus’ dream curse due to not going to Lilia’s farewell party and unaware of Malleus overblotting.
  • Magic Genetics: Idia's Unique Magic "Game, Set, Match: Gate To The Underworld" is a result of this as every member of the Shroud family had a hereditary Unique Magic that allows them to be able to open and close the gates of the Underworld that they are tasked to be guarding for centuries.
  • Motor Mouth: When Idia actually has something to say out loud, he always speaks quickly, near mumbling, to get it over with.
  • My Greatest Failure: Combined with It's All My Fault, he blamed himself for being the reason the original Ortho died and even when he created the android Ortho to fill the void of missing his little brother, the incident that got the original Ortho killed and eventually turned to a phantom still haunted him.
  • Otaku: Is shown to get extremely excited about going back to his room to play online games.
  • Pet the Dog: Ortho is just about the only character he is consistently nice to and gets along with. Especially since he once gets along and truly care for the original Ortho Shroud and he is just as fond of the android Ortho he created to cope the original Ortho's death.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: While it started off rocky at first, his Dorm Uniform SSR personal story ultimately reveals that the Ignihyde students see him as this. The way they've grown to genuinely look up to him is really heartwarming, especially if you compare Ignihyde's dorm leader-to-member relations with the other NRC dorms.
    • What makes it better is that this is essentially a callback to how the original Hades from Greek mythology was a genuinely responsible leader.
  • Survivor's Guilt: Idia went through 8 years worth of grief over the death of the original Ortho Shroud and said guilt fueled his current mindset. It takes a Dead Person Conversation with the original Ortho's ghost for Idia to finally make peace with his little brother's death.
  • Shrinking Violet: His usual personality when he's around others. However, there are exceptions in certain situations, as he has no problems talking normally on social media or with people he talks to on a regular basis such as Azul, who is a fellow board game club member like himself.
  • Skewed Priorities:
    • In the Ghost Marriage event story, he cares more about not being able to read the Manga he had been anticipating if he were to marry the bride and be whisked off to the spirit world than he does about losing his life.
    • In Chapter 7, the reason he decided to fight and stop Malleus is because Malleus forced his mom to hack and brute force her way into Idia's PC where she saw all the files he got to find the Cerberus Gear prototype, accidentally exposing his taste and hidden Doujin stash to his mom.
  • Slasher Smile: Has this whenever he gets really excited about something (like, say, checking if the new manga has come out).
  • Suspiciously Specific Denial: When he denies looking at Silver's sleeping face in the latter's Ceremonial Robes SR personal story.
Idia: Y-Y-Y-Y-You're wrong!! I wasn't peeping at your sleeping face or anything!!
  • Techno Wizard: As Ignihyde's specialization lies in Magitek, Idia's general aesthetic whenever he's deployed in battles or history lessons is this.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: He loves eating candies and it is his favorite food.
  • Uncertain Doom: After Malleus’ overblot and uses his unique magic to make the entire Sage’s island population into eternal sleep, it is unknown if Idia was affected by it or not since he was the only one who didn’t go to Lilia's farewell party. Part 3 reveals that he is affected by Malleus's magic despite not being present in the party due to being functionally human, but Ortho is not due to Ortho being humanoid. However, Part 6 ends with Idia meeting Silver, Sebek, Grim and Yuu, now fully awake and aware that he's in a dream and plans to help them to defeat Malleus.
  • Ungrateful Bastard: In the Ghost Marriage event story after the first and second group of boys are rejected in their attempts to woo the bride (which would save him had it worked), he scolds them for being "good for nothing" and compares them to bugs on that ground, which understandably pisses them off. He does a complete 180 once Eliza reveals that their wedding ceremony and subsequent honeymoon to the spirit world is that night and begins begging the others to help him, but by that point the little motivation they once had to help him out of his situation is gone.
  • Used to Be a Sweet Kid: While still bound by his "destiny", Idia was once a much more idealistic child who alongside his brother looked up to video game heroes and wanted to become an adventurer just like them. After the incident that caused the original Ortho's death, Idia became extremely cynical and reclusive to anything outside of his own interests, not to mention he admitted morality will never stand in his way if it means he can get his beloved brother back when a S.T.Y.X agent calls the robot Ortho a taboo.
  • With Friends Like These...: When he's being held captive by Eliza in the Ghost Marriage event, he begs Azul to talk her out of it as he and Azul are 'comrades of the board game club'. Azul's completely useless response is to fake joy for Idia and congratulate him on his marriage.
  • Young and in Charge: In Chapter 6, Idia is revealed to be part of the S.T.Y.X organization who just made acting captain, while his parents, who are actual captains of the organization, are away.

    Ortho Shroud
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ignihyde_chara_ortho_detail_a.png
Voiced by: Shouta Aoi
Twisted from: ???
Grade: Third Year (Shared position with his brother Idia), First year (Post Chapter 6)

Idia's surrogate brother. Though technically not a student at Night Raven College, he does everything with his "older brother" as they are enrolled together as a single student, similar to Yuu and Grim. In contrast to his "brother", though, Ortho has a bright, honest, and curious character.

  • Artificial Family Member: Was created by Idia, who regards him as his younger brother rather than his "child". Ortho in turn thinks of Idia as his older brother. He was made in Idia's attempt to "revive" the original Ortho Shroud who died 8 years ago.
  • Artificial Human: Was created by Idia in an attempt to "revive" his brother, the original Ortho Shroud.
  • Badass Adorable: He has the appearance and personality of a cute young child, and is more than capable of blowing up the school if he feels like it.
  • Becoming the Mask: Despite his awareness of being an android created as a Replacement Goldfish to the original Ortho when first created, the android Ortho himself still gets to see himself to be Idia's "little brother". When he is eventually restored after overblotting, Ortho said as such that he wants to stay as Idia's "brother", with Idia reciprocating his sentiment that the android Ortho is just as much Idia's brother as the original Ortho was to him.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: During the Ghost Marriage event, when everyone else laughs over how Idia was kidnapped by the ghosts to be married to Eliza, Ortho decides to save Idia himself… by using his beam to blow up the school. Fortunately, he's stopped by Crowley, who gets the students together to save Idia from becoming a ghost via marriage. He also attempts to use his beam on the obnoxious tourists in Scary Monsters, but the students of Ignihyde drive them out before he gets the chance.
  • Big Brother Instinct: Inverted. Ortho usually worries about his older brother Idia, especially considering Idia's lifestyle, and is quick to defend him against any badmouthing or accusations.
  • Big Brother Worship: He thinks highly of Idia, and comes to his defense when others speak badly of him.
  • Casting Gag: Diasomnia Chapter 6 has one where Ortho calls out to Silver, Sebek, Grim and Yuu who recently escaped from Lilia's dream and brought them to Idia's dream to re-group. This refers to the "Shouta Aoi to the rescue" meme from the Pop Team Epic anime adaptation.
  • Cheerful Child: Unlike his "brother", Ortho is highly curious, enthusiastic about everything he does and generally expressive with his emotions.
    • Ultimately this is double-subverted. His birthday story reveals he is actually 16. However, given that he is made in the original Ortho's image after the original Ortho died at age 8, the current android Ortho is created with the idea that he lived as a 16 year old.
  • Clone Angst: Technically. As an android and AI made in the image of the real Ortho, Ortho is at some parts, aware that he may not be able to fully live up to being a perfect replacement to the original Ortho, but he still cares about Idia so much that he gets manipulated by Phantom Ortho over it.
  • Demonic Possession: After Phantom Ortho hijacked the android Ortho’s body, he uses him to completely shut down the Cerberus system and cut off communication to isolate the S.T.Y.X staff entirely.
  • Developer's Foresight: After clearing Chapter 6, Ortho's profile and biodata is updated to reflect that Ortho has become an official first year student, this includes his best subject and club being updated along with being given his own Night Raven College Uniform via Idia making him a gear that resembles it.
  • Face–Heel Turn: Ortho gets manipulated by Phantom Ortho and betrays S.T.Y.X. by shutting down the Cerberus system and releasing a high amount of blots across the entire island. Fortunately, it doesn't stick too long and Ortho was eventually restored to normal after the overblot is dealt with.
  • In-Series Nickname:
    • Floyd calls him "Clione".
    • Rook calls him "Monsieur Doll". After the events of Chapter 6, Rook now refers to Ortho as "Monsieur Wonder".
  • Jumped at the Call: In Fairy Gala If, Ortho was enthusiastic at the thought of being able to join the Fairy Gala infiltration team when Vil and Crewel personally came to Ignihyde and find him. Idia, however, was initially against it out of worry for Ortho until Ortho himself convinced Idia to let him go and join.
  • Magitek: His general aesthetic and specialization as a member of Ignihyde dorm, especially since he is an artificial human.
  • Murder Is the Best Solution: Attempts to get rid of the obnoxious tourists in Screaming Monsters by using his beam on them, but the other members of Ignihyde drive them out before he can actually do it.
  • Odd Name Out: His card names are the only ones to be named differently from those of other students (e.g. (Student)'s R Gym Uniform card = Ortho's R Athletic Gear).
  • Older Than They Look: Ortho has the appearance of a child, but in his "SSR Birthday Suit Up" personal story, it's revealed that he's 16 years old.
  • Replacement Goldfish: The robotic Ortho is an AI given an android body made in the image of the original Ortho Shroud by Idia himself. While the robotic Ortho genuinely sees Idia as a brother, Idia himself, due to being unable to cope with the original Ortho's fate, knew that creating the robotic Ortho wasn't enough to help Idia in his grief, resulting in the robotic Ortho having a desire to be human.
  • Token Good Teammate: Overkill tendencies above aside, due to having the innocence level of a child he is one of the least corrupt characters of the cast.
  • Token Mini-Moe: He serves as this for the entire Night Raven student body due to being the shortest of the main cast. Helped by the fact he is just so adorable!
