Diasomnia

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/diasomnialogo_1.png
Founded on the Elegance of the Witch of Thorns, Diasomnia is home to those who excel in general magic.

The dorm and its members are twisted from Sleeping Beauty.

  • The Fair Folk: Not the entire dorm, however Diasomnia is notable for currently having the only fae main characters (Malleus, Lilia, and Sebek) assigned to it. The rest of the onscreen Diasomnia students are shown to be human, though the only important human from Diasomnia is Silver.
  • Family of Choice: None of the core members are related by blood but through means of adoption, growing up together, and swearing loyalty they share a bond as strong as a family's. Lilia specifically mentions this in Cater's "Scary Monsters" card which in turn secretly earns him a bit of ire from Cater, who never got to have meaningful and lasting relationships for a majority of his life.
  • Four-Temperament Ensemble:
    • Malleus is the intelligent and reserved melancholic.
    • Silver is the quiet and mild-mannered phlegmatic.
    • Sebek is the strong-willed and short-tempered choleric.
    • Lilia is the outgoing and unpredictable sanguine.
  • Horned Humanoid: Their dorm uniform hats evoke this image, as a reference to Maleficent's horns.
  • Meaningful Name: According to one of the official guidebooks, "Dia" is derived from "Diablo" (devil) and "Somnia" is Latin for dream. Fitting for a dorm based on a story revolving around a demonic entity cursing someone with eternal sleep.
  • Our Fairies Are Different: With the exception of Silver who is human, all of the other known (and important) members of Diasomnia are a type of fae. Malleus is explicitly stated to be a dragon fairy. Sebek's birthday story reveals that he has a Nightwinding fae heritage, while Lilia's subspecies of fae is still unknown.
  • Perky Goth: Out of all of the dormitories Diasomnia sports the most traditionally goth aesthetic, yet at the very least its core members have their quirks that land them here.
  • Promoted to Playable: While originally the only dorm that couldn't be selected at the start of the game (and therefore the only one unavailable in early gacha), Malleus's and Sebek's R and SR cards were added in April 2020, and Lilia's and Silver's were added a month later. By June 2020, newer players could finally choose a Diasomnia member as a starter character in the tutorials. In the English release, they are available since release instead of having to wait for 2 months after the game's first launch.

    Malleus Draconia

Voiced by: Kazuki Katō
Twisted from: Maleficent
Grade: Third year

The dorm leader of Diasomnia. A descendant of the Fae and one of the most powerful magicians in Twisted Wonderland. While he has a distinguished reputation among the student body of Night Raven College, his aura and reputation make it hard for people to approach him.

  • Academic Athlete: Malleus is said to have a firm grasp at the subject matter as well as being the most powerful Magift player Night Raven has. Then again, he does admit to not really learning anything new in regards to magic since he's already learned from Lilia and is Really 700 Years Old, and his power makes all other players (including members of his own team) deathly pale in comparison.
  • The Ace: Probably the best magician in Night Raven College and one of the top 5 most powerful wizards in the world.
  • Achievements in Ignorance: In "Glorious Masquerade", Malleus lashed out and unleashed some magic in anger at Rollo for playing him like a fiddle. Attracting the Crimson Flowers towards him... And has the Crimson Flowers initially surrounding him completely withered right after he has calmed down. Epel points out that Malleus's action let them discover the Logical Weakness of the Crimson Flowers. Namely, they are just like any other plant that can still wither from excessive nourishment.
  • Acquired Poison Immunity: Malleus is unaffected by the poison mist that Vil in his overblot and entered the colosseum with ease. This implies that Malleus is unaffected by poison due to being born a fae or because he's just that powerful.
  • Actually Pretty Funny: When Malleus doesn't give his name to Yuu and tells them to call him whatever they want, Yuu and Grim settle on 'Tsunotaro' ('Hornton' in the localization). When they call him that when they next meet him in person, he finds it amusing and starts laughing.
  • Advertised Extra: In most advertisements for the franchise he's usually front and center as if he's meant to be seen as a secondary Series Mascot after Grim. However, his role in the story isn't much bigger than the other dorm leaders or any character in the cast, really, as he rarely showed up in stories or received cards during the games first year. This is likely due to his being the dorm leader of Diasomnia, the last dorm to be explored, meaning that they couldn't give up too much information about him before his dorm's chapter release.
  • Agent Peacock: While not to the levels of Pomefiore, Malleus is fairly effeminate and just happens to be the most powerful magician there. Being based on the elegance of the Witch of Thorns probably helps.
  • Animal Motifs: Dragon, just like the character he is based on. Rook even refers to him as the King of Dragons.
  • The Archmage: He is among the five most powerful mages in the world. While he's under the same curriculum as everyone else his enrollment seems to be less of learning new magic and more of learning about people and customs outside of Briar Valley.
  • Beautiful Singing Voice: Multiple characters comment on Malleus' beautiful singing when he sings for the students of Nobel Bell College in "Glorious Masquerade." In Malleus' Masquerade vignette, Azul remarks that he has to up his game in order to sing backup for him. (Malleus' voice actor once sang the part of The Phantom of the Opera on stage.)
  • Blessed with Suck: His status as The Dreaded was revealed in Chapter 7 to be an effect of Mellenoar's blessings for her son, that he'd be revered by the Fae and feared by humans to protect him from greedy and power hungry humans. While this is good to have in a time of conflict, this blessing backfired on her son instead during a time of peace, as he is isolated and distanced from a majority of people who should be his peers.
  • Brown Note: Malleus causes this when he attempts to play an electric violin. Cater started foaming at the mouth.
  • Butt-Monkey: Despite being The Ace, Malleus has shades of this. As the most powerful student of Night Raven College, students tend to keep their distance from him, meaning they'll forget to include him in anything. As a result, Malleus is quite out of the loop with what happens within the school, making his lack of appearances a recurring joke throughout the story.
    • Unfortunately, despite his rep Malleus is also not completely immune to bullying. Leona has no problems hurling insults to his face and quipping that Malleus will never be invited to anything, and Rook, wanting to play tag with someone but having no luck, resorted to asking demeaning questions regarding dragon faeries (comparing them to other animals and even demons/monsters) to anger Malleus enough to chase him — although Malleus, very much angered, figures this out and leaves.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: Apparently, anyone who went up against him in the Magift tournament got instantly trounced by Malleus, because he is just that powerful. Book 2 opens with Crowley considering that Malleus should be taken out of the game, just to make it fair for everyone else.
  • Cute Little Fangs: He normally flashes them if he feels particularly smug.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: Malleus' Birthday Suit SSR personal story reveals he normally wears black colored clothes because there regarded as noble by the Draconia family. In fact, before came to Night Raven College, Malleus.had never worn the color white.
  • Does Not Like Spam: Downplayed. In Malleus' Birthday Suit SSR personal story, he says he doesn't really dislike sweet food like whole cake, but it's too big for him to eat. He once tries to eat the whole cake, but he doesn't finish all of it at his birthday because he gets heartburn. He is aware he wasn't supposed to eat the whole cake, it's just that he had no one to eat with back then. When Yuu suggests that they should share the cake with everyone at his birthday, he agrees with them.
  • Does This Remind You of Anything?: Chapter 7 reveals that Malleus is already sentient and conscious enough that he rejected his grandmother's own magic meant to nurture and make him hatch 10 years after Meleanor's death that Meleanor and Baul had to secretly enlist Lilia to help. The way Malleus nearly died if not for Lilia sacrificing part of his life span and magic to Malleus is reminiscent of a mother nearly losing her child to miscarriage and/or still birth.
  • Drama-Preserving Handicap:
    • In "Scary Monsters ~Endless Halloween~", Malleus and Lilia, by theory, should be the strongest magicians currently residing in Night Raven College, with the former being one of the strongest magicians and Lilia being an Old Soldier. However, the event has them easily captured and possessed by the ghosts residing in the ghost realm and the mastermind behind time freezing in 31 October in order to make sure that Halloween continues. However, this was later subverted when it's revealed that they were never possessed in the first place, and in fact, masterminded the whole event for the ghosts who missed NRC's Halloween party.
    • Played straight in "Glorious Masquerade" where Malleus was a victim of a Mana Drain from the parasitic crimson flowers that Rollo cultivated to "purify" Twisted Wonderland and was held down longer by it. He later runs low on magical reserves when in a bout of rage, he lashed out magic and overnourished the Crimson flowers. Malleus, with his strong magic would have been able to destroy and overnourish the Crimson Flowers but Rollo managing to get an upper hand and catching him and the rest of the visiting magicians from various magic schools off guard renders Malleus incapable of doing so right away, so the group had to bank on having to reach the Bell of Salvation in Noble Bell College.
  • The Dreaded: While Malleus has shown to be more amicable than many examples, his intimidating aura and vast arsenal of powers have made it so that many students would rather run or keep their distance in fear of what he could possibly do to them. Doesn't stop some from trying to pick a fight, though. Chapter 7 reveals that this actually part of his mother's blessing for him to protect him.
  • Early-Bird Cameo: Appears in chapter 2 of the main story but has yet to properly introduce himself to Yuu.
    • Yuu formally knows his name in Chapter 5 where it's revealed to the others that Yuu invited him to the VDC. The VDC Participants react with shock and Ace promptly yells at Yuu for calling Malleus 'Tsunotaro', although Malleus doesn't mind and even allows them to continue calling him as such.
  • Elegant Classical Musician: In Malleus's Birthday Suit SSR personal story, he is good at playing classical string instruments like the violin and the cello. When Yuu asks if he thought about joining the music club, he says that he was invited by Lilia and thought about doing so. However, he didn't know how to use the electric violin. When he tried, it let out a strange, ear-splitting sound, causing all the students around him to collapse after hearing it. After that incident, he decides to never show up at the light music club again.
  • Extremely Protective Child: Downplayed, but he doesn’t take too kindly to seeing Rook, to a very understandable degree, having a discussion with Lilia from across the field. He sends Rook a warning in the form of a ball thrown fast enough to nearly take his nose off.
  • The Fair Folk: Is said to be the descendant of a powerful fairy king. More specifically, he is stated to be a dragon fairy.
  • Fake Memories: Implied. In Chapter 7 of Part 3, Malleus can change his victim’s memories of their dreams and remove their tragic memories from the real world.
  • Famed In-Story: He's a prince who is the best magician in Night Raven College and one of the top 5 most powerful wizards in the world. Because of this reputation and his overpowering aura, many of the students are terrified of him.
  • Famous Ancestor: In one of his chat interactions with Sebek, Malleus mentions that the Witch of Thorns herself is his ancestor, making him her direct descendant.
  • Flying Brick: He is shown to fly through his battle sprite, he is strong enough to effortlessly open a coconut among other things, and he proudly claims that his body is much more durable than the average human's. And that's just the traditional powers associated with this trope and not getting into the rest of Malleus' abilities. Comes with the territory of being the most powerful Night Raven magician and one of the top five magicians in all of Twisted Wonderland.
  • Forced Sleep: His unique magic, “Fae of Maleficence”, allows him to put everyone into eternal sleep.
  • Foreshadowing:
    • Endless Halloween reveals that Malleus's magic is strong enough to be able to stop time temporarily. In Chapter 7, it's revealed that this is possible because Malleus is able to borrow magic from the world around him due to being a draconic Fae.
    • Endless Halloween reveals that Malleus masterminded the event at a spur of a moment to give the ghosts who missed the Halloween party a chance to have the party they never got to attend without considering the long term consequence to how his plan would have been perceived. Chapter 7 has Malleus put everyone to sleep to prevent Lilia and those his age from leaving his life but failed to consider factors such as need for food and hydration.
  • Goo-Goo-Godlike: Even as a toddler who could barely walk Malleus proved to have vast power. As expected, Malleus didn't have the best control of said power as seen by accidentally freezing the castle during a tantrum and nearly setting Briar Valley ablaze one Halloween night.
  • Hair-Trigger Temper: Implied in several Personal stories and often shown in event stories. One example is in Lilia's R P.E. Personal Story where he nearly murdered Rook over what Malleus assumed as harming Lilia. He's also shown to be close to resorting to violence if he felt slighted or offended, such as when he gets so upset at the MagiCam Monsters in Scary Monsters that he had to be held back from outright murdering them in his anger.
  • Hates Being Alone: Despite his habit of acting or running off solo at times, as the story progresses it's shown more and more that Malleus has a prevalent fear of being alone in the world either through those around him fearing him too much to make an effort to befriend him, revering him too much as a deity rather than treating him as a person, or simply disappearing from his life after becoming close to him thanks to whatever circumstance. Not helping things is that Malleus was raised in a very closed off environment and had very few steady interactions for over a century, and worse is that Malleus has shown instances where his Hair-Trigger Temper can lead to him losing control of himself and causing both unintentional (freezing the castle as a toddler) and intentional (attacking magicamonsters with lightening for insulting him) damage which further adds to his infamy.
    • Taken to its logical extreme in the Diasomnia chapter when, in his desperation to keep Lilia around, Malleus overblots on purpose, and casts a Forced Sleep spell over the entire island so no one can leave anyone ever again.
  • Hates Being Touched: Downplayed. While he doesn’t appear to hate it, he’s usually surprised when others do it, especially without permission.
    • One of his voiced lines has him offering a curious player/Yuu a chance to give his horns a feel...so long as they are okay with however he might react to it, and another follows up on this with him being cool with being touched and permitting it. However, another line has Malleus passively threaten the player/Yuu with lightning for touching him with no indication that he's kidding, and yet another has him say his bodyguards might get involved if they keep it up. It could be possible they did it those time without permission, though.
  • Hidden Depths: His cards reveal that underneath the commanding impression the rest of the student body has of him, he's a big softie deep down inside.
  • Hopeless Boss Fight: Malleus is the toughest boss in the second part of Chapter 7. Malleus’ health bar is 300,000, and he regenerates 60,000 each turn. This battle makes it impossible for the players to defeat him. Does it again in the third part.
  • Hopeless with Tech: His profile states that he's bad with machine operations. He has to ask Deuce to help him fix a digital pet game that Lilia gave him, because he has no idea how it works.
  • Horned Humanoid: Naturally, given that his design is based on Maleficent.
  • Idiot Hair: When not wearing a hat or head covering Malleus has a small cowlick that sticks up from his head. Downplayed in that Malleus is fairly intelligent, though he is prone to moments of naivety, cluelessness (especially with technology), and mischievousness.
  • I Just Want to Have Friends: With his fellow dorm members of Diasomnia revering him and other students fearing him, he can't make friends the way he wants to and is frequently jealous when he finds that Silver and Sebek have gotten to spend time with others. Malleus quickly latches onto Yuu, who doesn't fear him nor revere him due to having no knowledge of who he is, because of this. He even goes as far as to say he fears losing someone like them.
  • In-Series Nickname:
    • He receives the nickname "Tsunotaro" (roughly translated as "Horned Guy") courtesy of Grim and later Yuu, as he tells Yuu to call him however they want and never discloses his actual name. He finds this quite amusing, and allows only Yuu to refer to him as such. Even after Malleus shows up in Chapter 5 and Yuu finally learns his proper name, Yuu continues to refer to Malleus as 'Tsunotaro', to the shock of Ace, Deuce, Kalim, Jamil and the Pomefiore trio. This was localized as "Hornton" in the English release.
    • Rook calls him "Roi des Dragons".
    • Floyd calls him "Sea Slug" note.
  • Interspecies Friendship: Is a fae who befriends, or tries to befriend, the other students. Since there are currently only three important fae characters, his friendships outside of Lilia and Sebek are this in general.
  • "It" Is Dehumanizing: He gets very upset when he’s not only called an "it" by a visitor in the Scary Monsters event, but is also treated like an object for the MagiCam "Draconia Challenge" in which someone has to touch him and get a picture with him in order to win. The rest of the Diasomnia students even had to hold him back from murdering said visitors.
  • Jack of All Trades: In his birthday vignette, Malleus claims that he has no particular speciality when it comes to magic. But he's also so far above everyone else in terms of power and skill that he's "good at everything" by human standards.
  • Locked Out of the Loop: The entire cast, including his friends and guards, frequently forget to include him in or invite him to anything. It's rather a sore point with him. This is a Mythology Gag, referencing that Maleficent (and Carabosse, the fairy-tale character she's based on) was not invited to Aurora's christening.
  • Lonely at the Top: Thanks to Malleus being The Archmage as well as the crown prince of Briar Valley he is typically either feared for what he could possibly to to someone or revered for his powers and royal status. There are quite a few moments that hint that Malleus is aware of how lonely this has made him and that he does wish for some friends, not to mention the main reason he's drawn to Yuu is because they don't fear nor revere him.
  • Loving a Shadow: Chapter 7 reveals that the Royal Senate only cares about him for being a Draconian and heir to the throne without as much of a care about who Malleus is as a person and what he wants as an individual, especially from the way they seperate Lilia, his Parental Substitute, away from him due to their pettiness and Fantastic Racism against Lilia.
  • Manchild: He is implied to be older than all the other students save for Lilia and acts rather childish at times, such as when he gets pouty out of jealousy after finding that Silver and Sebek have been enjoying school life without him. He bickers with Leona like a child and playfully bullies Cater after he offends him. He also loves his Gao Gao Dragon-kun and becomes sad when he thinks it's irreparable. The official guidebook confirms that Malleus indeed can act very childish at times.
    • Chapter 7 deconstructed some aspects of this trait as his sheltered upbringing leaves him emotionally immature in some parts that he wasn't willing to accept that Lilia and Yuu are leaving his life. Thus he overblotted and used his magic to stop time in Sage Island so that nobody in his life would have to leave him.
  • Meaningful Name:
    • In Latin, malleus translates into "hammer".
    • "Draconia", or "draconian", translates to excessively harsh and severe.
    • "Malleus" could also be referencing the witch-hunting manual Malleus Maleficarum, and "draconia" could be in reference to his connection with dragons.
  • Missed Him by That Much: Malleus appears in person during the Magical Shift tournament but by then, Yuu had been knocked out because Grim accidentally sent the flying disk towards their head near the final half of the exhibition match, causing Yuu to miss out on the rest of the tournament.
  • Mr. Fanservice: While not the most overt example of the trope Malleus is still possibly the biggest one the game has to offer, being a very handsome and extremely powerful fairy prince who has grown an attachment to the protagonist due to being Lonely at the Top and is (currently) the character most prone to moments that can be viewed as Ship Tease.
    • The very first promo art for Twisted Wonderland had Malleus play this trope.
  • Not So Above It All:
    • In the personal story for his Ceremonial Robes card, he acts rather grumpy due to not being invited to the ceremony (again), becoming jealous toward Sebek who was invited and toward the then unknown person (revealed to be Leona) whose robe he'd accidentally ended up with due to the fabric being worn out enough to show they had attended many ceremonies. Lilia points out his jealousy immediately. Malleus becomes especially crabby when Sebek comments on his behavior and lashes out like a child as a result. The story also ends with Leona and him bickering like children while Ruggie and the other residents of Diasomnia look on.
    • In Chapter 3, when Yuu refers to Malleus as 'Tsunotaro', he starts laughing because he finds the nickname amusing.
    • As Deuce finds out in Malleus's SR Laboratory outfit card story, his most prized possession happens to be a Tamagotchi-esque child's toy that Lilia gave him. His Groovied illustration shows him looking at it fondly.
    • His R Uniform card story reveals that he created (and is the sole member of) the Gargoyle Appreciation Club and geeks out over them to Silver.
    • He's shown to be rather clingy toward Yuu once they become more familiar with each other.
    • He playfully teases Cater in his PE Uniform R personal story after Cater calls him a "mysterious enigma that scares him" by deliberately messing up the photos that Cater attempts to take of him to pose on Magicam.
    • He also electrocutes Sebek in the one-shot Manga for enjoying the tea party that the other residents of Diasomnia forgot to invite him to.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: He yells the Prefect's name (not their title, not his nickname for them, their actual name or the name the player gave them) during Ch. 3 of the Glorious Masquerade event when Rollo triggers a trap door and everyone falls in.
  • Older Than They Look: Implied. One of his Ceremonial Robes card lines has him saying that the first-year students are babies compared to him.
  • Platonic Co-Parenting: Raised Silver with Lilia.
  • Playing with Fire: Can summon green flames and can breathe fire, according to Lilia.
  • Pointy Ears: Has a pair of noticeably elfin ears, most likely due to his being a fae.
  • Poor Communication Kills: In Scary Monsters: Endless Halloween Night. In his empathy for the ghosts left behind, he only spoke of his plan to Lilia, Yuu, Grim and the other ghosts and did not inform the other students about arranging a whole second party for the ghosts late for Halloween. This results in a whole bad case of the students left behind and some who are possessed for the plan to think that the situation is far more dangerous than it seemed due to every single student in the school going missing, causing those left behind to think that there's a mass kidnapping from someone with nefarious intentions, and the ghosts ended up not fully explaining things to the students even when some are actually trying to settle the matter diplomatically. The other students were naturally pissed when they found out that the whole event is all Malleus and Lilia's plan and had rightfully called out Malleus for the lack of communication.
  • Power Floats: Is the most powerful magician at Night Raven and is the only character (besides Ortho) whose battle sprite will sometimes levitate off the ground during rest or shoot into the air during an attack.
  • Rage Breaking Point: Malleus, while still in an overblotted state, hits one when he learned that Lilia risked his life to hatch him and how Malleus had the truth hidden from him for centuries by the Royal Senate and his grandmother.
  • Raised by Grandparents: Averted. Despite being his only living relative, Malleus' grandmother doesn't raise Malleus while he's growing up because she is too busy ruling the Valley of Thorns and Lilia, his guardian, has to raise him instead. Chapter 7 reveals that this is all potentially done discretely from under the Royal Senate's eyes as they still had an Irrational Hatred and sense of elitism against Lilia for failing to save Meleanor and for supposedly "sullying" the Draconia family blood as it's through Lilia's love that Malleus finally hatched, rather than through the Fae's.
  • Raven Hair, Ivory Skin: He has long black hair and pale skin, enhancing his inhuman mystique.
  • Really 700 Years Old: Not as old as Lilia, but still centuries old. He claims that the other students are as infants compared to him. Chapter 7 gives the information that Malleus is 178 years old, but was actually born during the peak of the Humans vs Fae war 400 years ago from the present. With the implication that Malleus lost his parents during that war and how draco fae eggs can only hatch with nurture and magic from the parents, Malleus didn't hatch out of the egg immediately during that time due to losing his parents then.
  • Series Mascot: Downplayed compared to Grim, but when it comes to advertising the dorms and leaders, Malleus is usually front and center likely due to him visually looking the most like the Disney character he's twisted from.
  • Serious Business: Gargoyles. And he will correct anyone who can't tell gargoyles apart from grotesqueries.
    • He'll also make sure to let someone know that he's a western species of dragon fae and not a eastern species. Apparently he spent three or so hours lecturing Vil on this.
  • Sheltered Aristocrat: His Birthday Personal Story reveals that he spent most of his life in the castle he lived in. Malleus has also admitted to being very un-knowledgeable of cultures and customs outside of the Valley of Thorns and has shown signs of being borderline naive but ever willing to learn. Chapter 7 later made this a Deconstructed Trope as his sheltered upbringing means that his emotional growth is fairly stunted and his motivation to overblot is out of a desire so Lilia and everyone that he knew in Night Raven College won't leave from his life. The later portions of Chapter 7 reveals and implied that Malleus's parents died during the peak of the Humans and Fae war 400 years ago and the royal family of Briar valley likely had to go through such lengths to shelter Malleus since youth to protect the surviving heir of the throne, giving some justifications to this trope.
  • Ship Tease: Downplayed considering how the game averts having a lot of Ship Tease, but he gets some with Yuu.* Malleus becomes quite fond of Yuu from their first interaction due to his realization that they don't know who he is and thusly do not fear him or revere him in the same way the other students do. In "Scary Monsters", he chose Ramshackle as the location for Diasomnia's stamp rally collection because he wanted Yuu to enjoy Halloween and shows visible guilt when the tourists end up ruining things. On Yuu's part, they gave a ticket to Malleus to visit and see the VDC in the Pomefiore chapter. Even after Yuu finally learns who he is, they still called Malleus by the nickname they gave him and doesn't exactly care about how powerful Malleus was. Chapter 6 then has Malleus visit the destroyed Ramshackle Dorm while Yuu is away helping to rescue the kidnapped overblot victims, and he laments that while he had loved Ramshackle because it was an abandoned building Yuu had given it new charm that left when they did. It's unknown if these interactions are meant to be seen as romantic, however, as Malleus seems more happy to have found a friend in someone. As well, his voice lines when leveling up the episodes of his cards has him say this:
Malleus: You do not fear me, to lose someone like you makes me fearful.
  • Shock and Awe: On top of the green flames he's able to summon lightning.
  • Smug Smiler: Malleus has a tendency to act rather cocky at times and has a smirk to match.
  • Story-Breaker Power: In the second Vargas Camp event, Malleus was able to ace his assigned task easily enough and found a disguised Crewel early enough to figure out what the third task of the training camp was that he and Lilia are excused for the rest of the camp because they would have made things too easy for everyone else.
  • Superpower Lottery: Malleus is easily the most powerful character in the entire cast, and one of the top five mages in the world. His powers include, but are not limited to, summoning green flames and lightning, Super-Strength, Weather Manipulation, stopping time, magically putting people to sleep, and turning into a dragon. Malleus is so powerful that using his powers at all can have dangerous consequences; in the Scalding Sands event story, Jamil has to stop him from using magic to catch thieves, because if he does, he will destroy the entire street and cause an international incident.
  • Super-Strength: He can punch straight through stone walls.
  • Sweet Tooth: Subverted; he loves ice cream (popsicles in particular), but he doesn't like whole cakes because eating one by himself gives him heartburn. However, he does tell Yuu that if he has people to share the cake with, his opinion of them might change.
  • Tall, Dark, and Handsome: He's quite good-looking, with dark hair and a towering 202 centimeters of height (although this includes his horns, the official guidebook confirms that he's still the tallest character despite this).
  • Time Stands Still:
    • As the mastermind of the Endless Halloween Night, Malleus combined the ghosts' powers as well as his own in order to freeze the time at Night Raven to October 31, 11:59 P.M.
    • Chapter 7 reveals that Malleus is from a select few fae species who can borrow magic from nature, and this is what allows Malleus to stop time over Sage's Island.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Ice sticks and ice cream in general. In Malleus' Birthday Suit SSR personal story, the reason why he likes eating ice sticks is that the inner parts of his mouth will get hot after he breathes out fire. He eats them right after that and thinks that they taste extremely delicious.
  • Tsundere: One of his lesson selection screen voice lines gives this impression.
Malleus: When it is time for P.E, let me know beforehand. [beat] I- It’s not that I’m afraid to be left behind.
  • Unstoppable Rage: After being severely disrespected by the Night Raven visitors in the Halloween event Scary Monsters, he summons up lightning with the intent to kill. The visitors managed to get away before he and the other members of Diasomnia could finish them off.
    • He also becomes downright pissed during "Glorious Masquerade" when it's revealed that Rollo specifically invited Malleus to the event in order to attack him and drain him of his magic.
  • Vitriolic Best Buds: Silver implies that Malleus' relationship with Leona is like this. Leona claims to hate Malleus and even insults him to his face, but Silver often sees Malleus approach him anyway. Either way, whenever they interact onscreen childish banter tends to ensue.
  • Weather Manipulation: Introduced in Ch. 7 when he summons storms and snow during a sunny spring day after learning that Lilia plans to not only drop out but possibly move so far that Malleus might never see him again. Also comes with the territory of being based on Maleficent.
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: While no doubt stemming from his own issues and desires, Malleus's masterplan of putting the entirety of Twisted Wonderland into Forced Sleep is his way of creating a "perfect world" so no one would have to suffer from losing loved ones nor ever have to face hardships again. Of course, there is the issue of not just doing this forcefully on a whim but not taking into consideration that everyone can die due to their bodies not being active and nourished with no indication that Malleus himself can sustain them.
  • Weredragon: He's a dragon fairy. All the other members of Diasomnia have blue tails on their Halloween costumes, but Malleus' tail is black and spiky; he confirms in his homepage dialogue that it is his real tail.
  • With Great Power Comes Great Responsibility: He reveals in Chapter 7 that an incident when he was a toddler had him nearly freezing the whole castle and its inhabitants, until Lilia snapped him out of it and verbatim taught him this lesson right after.
  • Wistful Amnesia: Despite still being unhatched centuries ago, Malleus still recalls the tune of the lullaby that his mother sang to him before they parted and sang to it to a baby Silver once and early in Chapter 7 after he overblotted, even if he doesn't know the lyrics to the song. He also recall some of Lilia's travels for Malleus back when he's still an egg.
  • Wreathed in Flames: He engulfs himself in green flames during the game's intro when he appears to be upset by an unknown something.

Voiced by: Nobunaga Shimazaki
Twisted from: Princess Aurora
Grade: Second year

Malleus's friend who acts like a protector towards him. A quiet man, but he seems to have trouble sleeping.

  • Adoption Angst: Briefly goes through this twice. First, when Lilia told him that he and Silver are not related by blood. And second, after he learned the Awful Truth of who his biological parents are and what it means for Lilia to know who he was all along.
  • Awful Truth: Silver learns while exploring Lilia's dream that he's actually the child of the Dawn Knight and Princess Leah, Lilia's enemy and part of the army responsible for killing Princess Meleanor. Silver doesn't take it well that he is actually the child of the people who hurt Lilia and Malleus.
  • Big Damn Heroes: Saves Yuu and Grim from being swallowed by darkness after Mickey wakes up and his dream room fades away.
  • Broken Tears:
    • In Chapter 7, Silver sheds these tears in front of Malleus as he admits his regret for not repaying his adopted father Lilia for raising him. It shows Silver will dearly miss Lilia and fears this will be the last time they will ever see him. Unfortunately, his tears were the last push Malleus needed to jump off the slippery slope and put his Arc Villain plan into motion.
    • He has another moment where he sheds these tears when he learns the Awful Truth of his origins.
  • Calling Parents by Their Name: Calls Lilia "Lilia-senpai" when in front of non-Diasomnia students, apparently by Lilia's instruction. When they’re alone or around Malleus or Sebek, he refers to him as "Oyaji-dono"/"Father". He also refers to Malleus as "Malleus-sama" regardless of who they're around despite also being raised by him.
  • Childhood Friends: With Sebek.
  • Dream Walker: Silver's Unique Magic "Meet in a Dream" allows him to enter people's dreams. However, it only works if he's asleep and he does not have full control over whose dreams he will end up in.
  • Fish out of Temporal Water: Technically, Silver was actually born in the same era as Malleus was but was put to a state of stasis by the three fairies and his biological mother in order to protect him.
  • Friend to All Living Things: Small animals like birds and squirrels flock to him and often help him out.
  • Genius Ditz: While he is stated to be gifted in some areas, such as swordfighting, he can be less than mindful of his surroundings at times. According to Ruggie, both he and Kalim are grouped together as 'madfree space' in Class 2-A due to how easily they get on their classmates' nerves for this trait.
  • Happily Adopted: Silver doesn't show concern toward the existence of his real parents, and is grateful toward Lilia and Malleus for taking him in. He regards Lilia as his father despite Lilia being a fae while he himself is a human and uses his wish in hopes of giving Lilia a long life.
  • Heroic BSoD: Spent a while in despair and swallowed by the "darkness" of the dream realm when he learned the Awful Truth of who his biological parents are. Thankfully, Sebek managed to snap him out of it.
  • "I Know You're in There Somewhere" Fight: Silver towards a possessed Kalim in Endless Halloween Night.
Silver: Kalim... please. Return to your normal self. Hurting you any more than this, or the other way around, I can't bear to see it. You're always bright, gentle, and fun... A precious friend to me.
  • In-Series Nickname: Floyd calls him "Jellyfish" note.
  • Light 'em Up: Uses light magic for his non-elemental attacks making him a part of the 'light magic trio' with Rook and Kalim.
  • Literal-Minded: At times due to his perpetually serious nature.
Leona: [About Malleus] You think we’re friends? Keep dreaming.
Silver: I’m awake right now, so I’m not dreaming.
  • Meaningful Name: In Silver's Birthday Suit SSR personal story, Lilia was the one who named him "Silver" after he adopted him when he was an infant. Silver asks Lilia why he named him "Silver" and his response is because his color hair is silver. In reality, Silver received his name because Lilia's blessing as a night fairy changed Silver's initially blonde hair to a moonlit silver color.
  • Never Given a Name: Played With. When Lilia found baby Silver, the cradle he was placed in did not give an indicator of what Silver's name was before. Whatever Silver's original name was is long gone with his biological parents dead and not having the chance to call him by the name that he would have had.
  • Nice Guy: Despite his stoic demeanor, he's consistently been one of the nicest members of the cast and gives advice to his fellow schoolmates.
  • Not-So-Small Role: Due to how he doesn't get as much screentime as the rest of the cast, most fans were shocked to find that Silver might actually have an incredibly relevant role to play in the main story, having been recognized by Mickey Mouse as the only other person besides Yuu that he could see in his dream room.
    • Confirmed as of Diasomnia part 3 — thanks to his Unique Magic, Silver becomes the linchpin in rescuing the rest of the cast from Malleus's dream world.
  • Not So Stoic: Silver is normally calm and rarely shows emotions, but in Chapter 7 part 2, he fully breaks down in tears as he regrets not thanking Lilia for raising him. He fears he will never see Lilia again.
    • In part 5, Silver has a full-on Freak Out after realizing he's related to the Dawn Knight and the Silver Owls, horrified that his own blood made Lilia and Malleus suffer. He remains emotional when he sees the flashback of Lilia finding him as a baby.
  • Older Than They Look: Like Malleus, he's technically really over 400 years old, since he was born during the human-fae war. It's very downplayed; he was just made to sleep for all that time before Lilia found him and has been aging normally since. See Fish out of Temporal Water above.
  • Only One Name: Only referred to as Silver, and is the only student without a known last name.
  • Really Royalty Reveal: Silver is the son of the Dawn Knight and his wife, making him a prince. Subverted Since their kingdom fell shortly after the war centuries ago, so his status as a prince is probably meaningless in the present.
  • Red Herring: Silver's coffin logo is denoted with a sword, indicating that he is potentially twisted after the sword that Prince Phillip used to kill Maleficent. Chapter 7 part 5 instead reveals his past to be completely different from the object and/or character that he was initially perceived to be twisted from and Silver is actually twisted from Princess Aurora due to the way his past and origins as revealed in Chapter 7 Part 5 parallels that of the titular princess from Sleeping Beauty.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: The more reserved and logical blue oni to Sebek's more enthusiastic and hot blooded red oni.
  • Selfless Wish: Wishes for his father Lilia to live a long life in the Wish Upon A Star event. Crosses over with Wasteful Wishing since Lilia is already implied to be Long-Lived as a fae.
  • Sleepyhead: Falls asleep anywhere at any time, much to his annoyance.
  • Sins of Our Fathers: A tragic but ultimately averted case: Silver seemed to be of the belief that the innocent children of enemies should not be shown any more mercy than the enemies themselves, and upon finding out he was the son of the Dawn Knight he felt that Lilia should have killed him or at least hated him. Thankfully, Silver is shown flashbacks of when Lilia adopted him and accepts that Lilia truly loved him as his own.
  • Spanner in the Works: Yes, Malleus put everyone into a Forced Sleep, but Silver's Unique Magic can only activate while he's asleep, basically making him the key figure in saving them and bringing Malleus's plan down.
  • The Stoic: Silver rarely ever emotes, not even when he’s feeling happy.
  • Super Gullible: Not always, but in Leona's Ceremonial Robes personal story, he falls for Leona's half-truth about seeing Malleus in the greenhouse (it's a half-truth because he didn't say that he'd seen him there today) despite being at least somewhat aware that Leona was trying to get rid of him.
  • Talking the Monster to Death: In Endless Halloween Night, he attempts to talk Kalim out of his possessed state by doing this. Despite his good intentions, his words only fell on deaf ears.
  • Technicolor Eyes: While everyone in the cast has abnormal eye colors, Silver's are relevant in that they’re specifically described as aurora-colored by Vil.
    • In the final chapters of Chapter 6, Mickey Mouse describes Silver's eyes in the same way, too, telling Yuu that he saw "a boy with silver hair and a curious eye color" enter his dream room not too long ago.
  • Token Good Teammate: One of the least corrupt characters in the cast who doesn't need to be motivated by selfish gains to help others. His wish in the Wish Upon A Star event is selfless and he'll only shirk on heroic responsibilities when his hands are tied, such as being left as the only one to guard Malleus in the Ghost Marriage event rendering him unable to help Idia when the player asks. He even apologizes for being unable to help.
  • Token Human: The only normal human among the Diasomnia students introduced. In contrast to Malleus, Lilia and Sebek, who have Exotic Eye Designs that hint at their fae heritage, Silver's eye designs are similar to those of the human characters.
    • Averted for the dorm overall as other students from Diasomnia are shown to be human as well, but played straight again as he is the only human character in the Diasomnia quartet, and the only human main character from Diasomnia overall.
  • Training from Hell: Silver and Sebek once underwent harsh training by Lilia during their early childhood, such as swimming up against the rapids and climbing up a mountain where the air is thin in Lilia's Birthday Suit SSR personal story. However, once Lilia realizes how Silver and Sebek were trying their best to endure severe training, he decides to stop training them and raise them like children.
  • Undying Loyalty: He's incredibly devoted to Malleus as his loyal guard. While more downplayed, he's also loyal to Lilia, wanting to repay both of them for their kindness in raising him.
  • Vitriolic Best Buds: To Sebek. They're Childhood Friends according to Lilia, but they're always arguing due to Sebek's desire to be seen as the better underling to Malleus.
  • Wasteful Wishing: Wishes for Lilia to have a long life in the Wish Upon A Star event story because he believes that Lilia is getting along in the years. This is despite the fact that it’s heavily implied that Lilia is an ancient being that's destined for a longer life than he's already had. The following conversation with Deuce implies that Silver isn't aware of Lilia's long life span, however, as Lilia won't even tell him how old he is.

    Sebek Zigvolt

Voiced by: Haruki Ishiya
Twisted from: Maleficent's lightning
Grade: First year

An admirer of Malleus. He tends to clash with Silver.

  • Abhorrent Admirer: A platonic one for Malleus. Sebek is absolutely enamored by his liege and will waste no opportunity to either exalt Malleus or discuss how he wants to be Malleus' closest attendant. For his part Malleus does not return the feelings and has been shown to be quite annoyed by these antics.
  • Berserk Button: Sebek will go on a tirade if he feels that Malleus isn't receiving enough praise or is being slighted in any way. Sebek will also go off on anybody who he feels is trying to get too close to Malleus for his own liking, something that the poor vice president of Noble Bell College found out the hard way (and after Sebek gave him the confidence to approach Malleus to boot).
  • Boomerang Bigot: Downplayed. Sebek distrusts and strongly dislikes humans even though he's half-human himself. The only human he doesn't mind being around is his childhood friend, Silver, at least most of the time. He tries not to be hostile and prejudiced towards them for Malleus and Lilia's sake.
  • Childhood Friend: To Silver, as revealed through Lilia’s dialogue. You wouldn’t know it considering their dynamic.
  • Does Not Like Spam: Black coffee. In Sebek's Birthday Suit SSR personal story, he dislikes black coffee because it tastes bitter and reminds him of how Silver and Malleus drink it and spend time together happily, which makes him sick. He also dislikes how they treat him like a child when they suggest that he add sugar to his coffee. He tries to train himself to get used to drinking the same coffee Malleus likes despite the bitterness.
  • Everyone Has Standards: As loyal and exalting as he is of Malleus, even he views Malleus putting everyone into a Forced Sleep dream world as too far and lends assistance to Silver once he "awakens" and realizes the truth. He still deeply regrets having to turn against Malleus, though.
  • The Fair Folk: Is a fae like Malleus and Lilia, though which kind of fae he is is currently unknown.
  • Fantastic Racism: Sebek holds a lot of prejudice towards the human race and rarely misses an opportunity to take jabs at it despite being half-human himself, and his disdain extends to his own father as hinted at in his Birthday Suit Up card. However, he keeps himself in check thanks to the influence of his fellow dormmates.
    • Ch. 7 has Lilia remarking how Sebek shares a lot of "old fashioned" beliefs with the maternal grandfather that Sebek was close to, implying that Sebek may have picked up some of his anti-human stance from him.
  • Grandparent Favoritism: Sebek loves his grandfather more than he loves his father. It's not hard to see why when Chapter 7 reveals that Baul is a Doting Grandparent to his grandchildren and supportive of whatever they chose to be in the future.
  • Half-Human Hybrid: It was revealed in Chapter 5 that Sebek has both human and fairy heritage. His birthday suit SSR story further reveals that his mother is a nocturnal type of fae, while his father is a human dentist without magical powers.
  • Huge Schoolgirl: Another male example. He's a first year… who's 188 cm tall.
  • Ignored Enamored Underling: Maybe a platonic version in Sebek's case. He worships the ground Malleus walks on, but Malleus doesn't return the sentiment and is more often than not depicted becoming frustrated with his enthusiasm toward serving him.
  • I'm Not Here to Make Friends: Besides Silver (his only friend from childhood), Sebek is not interested in making friends and the only reason he enrolled in Night Raven College was to stay by Malleus’ side.
  • Irony: Sebek both admired and was envious of Jamil's relationship with Kalim due to how close they were for their 'master/servant' relationship, along with their history as Childhood Friends, and wished his relationship with Malleus was similar. The events of Chapter 4 reveal Jamil and Kalim's relationship to be far more complicated than that, possibly leading to Dramatic Irony if players read Chapter 4 before getting into the students' personal stories.
  • In-Series Nickname: Floyd calls him "Crocodile"note.
  • It Was a Gift: In Sebek's Birthday Suit SSR personal story, the portrait of Malleus was given by Malleus and Lilia. He explains that when he enrolled at Night Raven College, Lilia asked him if there was anything he wanted to celebrate and he said without hesitation he wanted a portrait of Malleus. A few months later, he was called to the castle and it was given to him by Malleus himself. To him, it was a dream come true and he treasures the portrait for the rest of his life.
  • Noble Bigot: While he believes wholly that fairies are far more superior to humans and will never miss a chance to express that, Sebek has (currently) not been shown to be outright cruel or malicious towards humans and has been willing to lend assistance if needed such as during his personal story from the Harveston event.
  • No Indoor Voice: He doesn't talk, he projects.
  • Overzealous Underling: To Malleus, which he’s frequently scolded for.
  • Pointy Ears: Averted. He's the only fae introduced so far to not have these, though his eye designs confirm that he is in fact a fairy. However, the lack of elfin ears may be attributed to him being a half-human.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: The red oni that enthusiastically wishes to serve Malleus in any way he can to Silver's more relaxed and logical blue oni.
  • Refusal of the Call: In Fairy Gala If, Sebek was the initial pick for a candidate to join the team that would infiltrate the Fairy Gala venue. However, Sebek outright refused Riddle and Leona hence, Silver ended up taking Sebek's place.
  • The Rival: To Silver, when it comes to serving Malleus.
  • Shock and Awe: He's twisted from Maleficent's lightning. It fits with his surname, Zigvolt.
    • His unique magic, "Living Bolt", is also lightning-based.
  • Suddenly Shouting: His Verbal Tic, demonstrated by the dialogue text getting bigger.
Sebek: …We’ll start by using the pickaxes to chip off the wall’s weathered, brittle outer layer. Then we’ll use hammers and chisels to remove the magestone from its rocky encasement. THAT IS ALL!
  • Super Gullible: His fervent respect for Lilia and Malleus makes him easy to fool by the former.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Salmon carpaccio. In Sebek's Birthday Suit SSR personal story, the reason why he likes eating salmon carpaccio is because it reminds him of his hometown and the memories of how he spent time with his siblings fishing and cooking the catch at his grandfather's house.
  • Training from Hell: Sebek and Silver once underwent harsh training by Lilia during their early childhood, such as swimming up against the rapids and climbing up a mountain where the air is thin in Lilia's Birthday Suit SSR personal story. However, once Lilia realizes how Silver and Sebek were trying their to best to endure severe training, he decides to stop training them and raise them like children.
  • Undying Loyalty: Take everything said about Silver's Undying Loyalty towards Malleus and Lilia, then turn it up to eleven. Yeah, this guy is extremely devoted to serving both Malleus and Lilia to the point where it's a guarantee that he will mention them in any of his conversations (especially Malleus), and will not tolerate even the tiniest hint of disrespect, even (or especially) from himself. Oh, and did we mention he has a portrait of Malleus in his room?
  • Vitriolic Best Buds: To Silver. They’re Childhood Friends according to Lilia, but they’re always arguing due to Sebek’s desire to be seen as the better underling to Malleus.
  • You Remind Me of X: As revealed by his second birthday interview, Sebek realizes with much horror that he'd been unconsciously seeing his father in Trey Clover of Heartslabyul. Granted, both Trey and his dad wear eyeglasses and have a shared passion for dental healthcare...

    Lilia Vanrouge
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/diasomnia_chara_lilia_detail_a.png
SPOILER WARNING
Voiced by: Hikaru Midorikawa
Twisted from: ?
Grade: Third year

The vice dorm leader of Diasomnia.

  • Acquainted in Real Life: Neither Lilia nor Idia realize that they are actually each other's online gaming buddy.
  • Adoptive Peer Parent: Played with. Lilia is ancient and Silver's adoptive father, but they go to the same school together and he looks much younger than he actually is. His P.E. uniform card story also reveals that he was Malleus's primary caretaker 'ever since he still had eggshells on his face'.
  • Admiring the Abomination: In "Lost in the Book with Stitch", he reacts this way when he sees Stitch's true form and remarks that Stitch is still very much adorable despite it.
  • Agent Peacock: On top of a very youthful appearance Lilia is also quite cute and effeminate, down to having a Gender-Blender Name. He is also another one of the most powerful beings in Night Raven and an Old Soldier who will show his battle prowess if pushed to it.
  • Amazingly Embarrassing Parents: While most of the cast are unaware that he actually raised Malleus and Silver, he does have some moments where he lets slip about their childhood such as saying that he's known Malleus since he had "little eggshells on his face". Also, in one of his Halloween homescreen lines, he tells the player that Silver and Sebek used to be scared during Halloween that by morning there would be a hefty laundry day, implying that they used to wet the bed.
  • Ambiguously Bi: It's not fully confirmed but chapter 7 reveals that Lilia used to crush on Mellenoar when they were younger and centuries later, she said word for word that Lilia had what could be described as a Pseudo-Romantic Friendship with her husband Leverne. The usage of 愛してる (aishiteru), which is commonly interpreted as a very intimate interpretation of one's relationship with another in the Japanese language and the context implies that Lilia is at least bisexual, but there is no concrete confirmation that he is one and the love he has for both Mellenoar and her husband can also be interpreted as platonic, especially as Lilia had proposed to Mellenoar when they are at the child equivalent ages for the FaeExplanation, so Lilia had time to get over his crush on Mellenoar, putting Lilia in this trope.
  • Animal Motifs: Bats, according to the loading screen. He's also more active at night and when he's used in P.E. lessons, bats carry his broom. Lilia also has a habit of hanging upside-down from the top of the screen during his interactions, similar to how bats hang upside-down from branches. Chapter 7 confirms that Lilia is a Fae of the Bats subspecies, making this a literal example.
  • Badass Adorable: Has the appearance of a cute, small boy but can kick ass when pushed into it. He also learned how to use his short stature to his advantage in battle.
  • Becoming the Mask: In the past, Lilia strictly states that he's not a fan of children, but years had passed since he raised Malleus and had softened his stance on children. This also motivates him to eventually take in Silver and eventually come to accept Silver as his own son.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: Lilia is one of the nicest characters in the cast but he won’t hesitate to take down anyone that he views as a threat to Malleus, as he warns Rook.
  • Childhood Friends: With Malleus's parents.
  • Child Hater: In Chapter 7, Lilia reveals that he actually hated kids 400 years ago as he believed that children are weak. Lilia grew out of this by the present as he likely had to raise Malleus in the deceased Mellenoar's stead shortly after she died and then adopting Silver himself.
  • Cloudcuckoolander's Minder: Lilia was one for Mellenoar as he had to contend with and do damage control for her antics and pranks.
  • Composite Character:
    • Lilia's aesthetics and surface-level personality are based on Maleficent's minions, but his role as Silver's guardian and keeper of his secret lineage are taken from the Three Good Fairies.
    • Lilia also shares some elements with Mushu as guardians of their wards (Mushu with Mulan, Lilia with Malleus and Silver) who was treated horribly by individuals who are essentially ancestors of those they are tasked to protect and guide (The Fa Family Ancestors and the Royal Senate), with Mushu being derided for his misguidance to some of the Fa family members and his personality, while Lilia was hated for being an orphaned Bat Fae and accused of "running away" despite Lilia leaving the battlefield with the then egg Malleus under Meleanor's very orders, and later being treated ungratefully and horribly due to the Royal Senate's Fantastic Racism against those not of a higher hierarchy among the Fae such as the bats when Lilia was able to get Malleus to hatch and order that Lilia is to never interact wtih Malleus for the supposed sin of hatching Malleus as a Bat Fae.
  • Cool Old Guy: Heavily implied to be the oldest of the students, and is one of the nicest characters in the cast unless tested.
  • Cordon Bleugh Chef: As his Master Chef story shows Lilia actually is very much capable of cooking up a perfectly tasty meal if he would stick to a recipe. However, Lilia is never satisfied with the "nutritional value" of a recipe given, leading to him creating dishes that give him his Lethal Chef reputation.
  • Cute Little Fangs: He has these.
  • Deliberately Cute Child: He’s not actually a child, even though he looks like one, but he plays this trope well and loves to remind others of how cute and charming he is.
  • De-power: Chapter 7 reveals that Lilia is slowly losing his ability to cast magic and thus plans to drop out of Night Raven College in a week and retire in another country.
  • Disproportionate Retribution: On the receiving end of this where the Senate of the Royal Briar family put him on exile for running away to prioritize Malleus's safety under Meleanor's very orders.
  • Does Not Like Spam: His least favorite food is marshmallows.
  • Don't Try This at Home: Parodied by Lilia as he mentions to Vil in Chapter 7 how he had been hooked to online gaming for 2 years and how he should not have done that, advising that one should play games in moderation.
  • Dude Looks Like a Lady: There are suspicions that because of how effeminate he looks, he may actually be a girl in disguise.
  • Drama-Preserving Handicap: In "Scary Monsters ~Endless Halloween~", Malleus and Lilia, by theory, should be the strongest magicians currently residing in Night Raven College, with the former being one of the strongest magicians and Lilia being an Old Soldier. However, the event has them easily captured and possessed by the ghosts residing in the ghost realm and the mastermind behind time freezing on 31 October in order to make sure that Halloween continues. However, this was later subverted when it's revealed that they were never possessed in the first place, and in fact, mastermind the whole event for the ghosts who missed NRC's Halloween party.
  • Eccentric Mentor: He acts as this to the other residents of Diasomnia, but also extends his wisdom to students from other dorms at times.
  • The Exile: Diasomnia Chapter 6 reveals that Lilia was exiled by the Senate of the Royal Family for his failure to protect Meleanor's life and because they couldn't trust a dirty orphan from unknown origins that Queen Maleficia picked up to be the one to hatch Malleus. Lilia voluntarily stays an exile later after he hatched Malleus's egg and lives in the outskirts of the main capital.
  • Expository Pronoun: He uses the first-person pronoun washi and second-person pronoun onushi, which are commonly used by elderly characters. This gives the viewers a clear hint of his true nature.
  • The Face: Despite only being the Vice dorm leader of Diasomnia, he’s usually the one attending all of the meetings in Malleus’ place and taking on workloads due to Malleus frequently not being invited to meetings and other times simply not showing up. The characters also seem to have an easier time talking to him than Malleus, who everyone save for a few characters is said to be intimidated by.
  • The Fair Folk: Is a fae like Malleus, though implied to be of a different sort.
  • Fantastic Racism: Chapter 7 reveals that Lilia not only face racism for being fae from humans in the past, he also received this from other fellow fae, especially from nobles who dislike that he is a "dirty commoner orphan Bat Fae". This racism is one of the factors to why Lilia is later exiled following Meleanor's death in the human-fae war.
  • The Gadfly: During Sebek's R P.E. Uniform card story, it's revealed that he was the one who told Sebek about eating steak with natto and yogurt sauce. Upon finding out that Sebek took it seriously, he gets a good laugh.
  • Gameplay and Story Integration: Unlike the other cards he has, his Right Hand General Lilia card has no personal story vignettes that can be read... since it's his past self, rather than his present self. His battle voice lines also match in tone to show the difference between the Lilia that players were familiar with beforehand with the Lilia of the past.
  • Gameplay and Story Segregation: While his home screen and battle voice lines as his Right Hand General self do reflect and showcase what Lilia was like in the past, he is still treated as regular Lilia in Lessons and still has the same level-up quotes that the regular Lilia has while you level up his stats. He also had the same idle animation with regular Lilia while in battles as well.
  • Gender-Blender Name: "Lilia" is a feminine given name.
  • Height Angst: Played with. While he does have dialogue implying that he finds his short stature bothersome at times, he does feel it adds to his cuteness and has long since learned to take advantage of his height when it comes to combat. Considering he is implied to be an ancient being, he’s likely had a lot of time to come to terms to with.
  • Hidden Depths: Lilia is a gamer by night and sometimes spends all night gaming. Vil even gets jealous in his R P.E. Uniform card story because even with all the all-nighters Lilia pulls, he still looks beautiful.
  • Hime Cut: His hair is cut like this.
  • In-Series Nickname: Rook calls him "Monsieur Curiosity". Floyd calls him "Flapjack Octopus"note. As revealed in his Ghost Marriage SR card, he also goes by the gaming alias of Crimson Muscles.
  • Interspecies Adoption: Is a fairy that adopted Silver, who is human.
  • Interspecies Friendship: Is a fae that befriends the other non-fae students in the cast.
  • Irony: As Lilia's Master Chef personal story reveals, Lilia would have been a good cook if he followed according to the recipe, but he chose to ignore it because he believes the food won't be nutritious enough if he followed the recipe to a T. By doing so, he becomes a Lethal Chef.
  • I Want My Beloved to Be Happy: A platonic example. It's at least implied that Lilia used to crush on Meleanor while having, in her words, a Pseudo-Romantic Friendship with Leverne and explicitly saying that Lilia loved both of them in the past Explanation, but let them marry each other and wished them well.
  • Lethal Chef: According to Silver in the 4-koma anthology. This is eventually confirmed and shown in his Masterchef cards and personal story that Lilia deliberately ignored the cook books or regular recipe one would use while cooking because he believes following them by the letter will not result in a nutritious meal.
Lilia: Oh no! I spaced out and I made the dish according to the recipe. This won’t be nutritious enough. Time to add in a bunch of liver!
  • Mono no Aware: Lilia has embraced this belief due to being Long-Lived. As he tells Malleus at the end of Ignihyde after seeing everyone return from the Isle of Lamentation, humans are fragile and had a shorter lifespan, but it's because they are weak that they are all intertwined and create a strong impact to the history of the world.
  • Mundane Utility: Chapter 7 reveals that Lilia has a trademark cleaver-like magical weapon made of a mineral named Mystium used in his days as a general... which he now used as an axe to chop wood as he'd rather let it be used than to be left to rust in dust. According to Malleus, he also used said cleaver to crush and smash the ice made from Malleus's magic from when he accidentally froze the castle and made shaved ice out of them.
  • No Good Deed Goes Unpunished: It took 200 years, but Lilia was able to hatch Malleus when no one else, not even Malleus's own grandmother could. The response Lilia got from the Royal Senate? To shout vitriol at how a dirty orphan bat fae sullied the blood of the Draconia royal family.
  • Obfuscating Stupidity: Despite being a retired Old Soldier, Lilia feigns his old age and experience to others unaware of his true nature and past in Night Raven College so he comes off as an odd and kooky student to his own peers and fellow students.
  • Old Soldier: He's at least old enough to have raised Malleus and Silver (and is hinted to be much, much older than that), and despite his appearance, he's a decorated, retired veteran whose combat prowess earned him the trust of the Queen of the Valley of Thorns herself. He even gives Epel a few tips on how to use his small size to his advantage in a fight.
  • Papa Wolf: He isn’t afraid to take down anyone that he views as a threat to Malleus.
  • Parental Substitute: On top of being Silver's adoptive father, he is also a parental figure to Malleus himself. Several personal story vignettes such as Malleus' first birthday card Personal story has him mention that Lilia took care of him when his grandmother is busy with ruling duties and Malleus regarded Lilia greatly as a Parental Substitute that hearing about Lilia's decision to retire and leave Briar Valley due to losing his ability to use magic in Chapter 7 had him upset.
  • Parents as People: Mixture of this and Good Parents. Lilia has done well in raising Malleus and Silver and they (Silver especially) respect him in turn. With that said, like the fairies from "Sleeping Beauty", there have been tidbits that implied that Lilia wasn't initially the greatest when it came to childcare, notably with human babies.
  • Persona Non Grata: Chapter 7 reveals that Lilia's achievements and involvement had been erased from Briar Valley history ever since his exile due to the Royal Senate's (And several nobles in the country) Fantastic Racism against him and for his supposed failure in failing to save Meleanor during the human-fae war. While Malleus's history class voice lines reveal that pictures and records of Lilia's time as the Right-hand general still exist, no one but Malleus, Sebek and Silver know of said general's identity, additionally, Baul and Maleficia still contact Lilia once in a while.
  • The Pirates Who Don't Do Anything: He, Cater and Kalim are the only members of the light music club, but they don't actually do anything music-related and just use the club room as a place to hang out and pass the time. Cater's Birthday Personal Story shed some light to this. According to Cater, the member's own personal preferences with music clashed (Kalim wanting to perform his home's music and Lilia preferring to perform a metal genre song) so neither of them can get anything much done.
  • Platonic Co-Parenting: Raised Silver with Malleus.
  • Pointy Ears: He has pointed ears, likely attributed to his fae nature.
  • Pseudo-Romantic Friendship: According to Mellenoar, Lilia had this relationship with her husband Leverne.
  • Really 700 Years Old: He's rumored to be an ancient being despite looking like a young boy. He also speaks and acts like an old man much of the time. Chapter 7 confirms Lilia is almost 700 years old.
  • Retired Badass: Deconstructed Trope. He was unreasonably exiled by the Royal Senate due to Meleanor's death and not even Maleficia, who still trust Lilia's capabilities, could fully veto the decision, and Lilia was too grief stricken by Meleanor's death to argue with it. Even after he hatched Malleus's egg at the cost of his own lifespan 200 years later, Lilia was instead derided for supposedly "sullying" the Draconian family's blood purity. The grief and the Elder's words did so much damage to Lilia's self worth that he sticks to retiring and live in exile all the way to the present day.
  • Say My Name: Lilia screams Malleus’ name as he was about to overblot and unleash his sleeping curse on the entirety of Sage Island.
  • Skewed Priorities: Has this twice in “Lost in the Book with Stitch”:
    • The first thing he asks of Yuu after realizing that their clothes had also been magicked away is to ask them if he still looks cute at the moment and is relieved if Yuu says that he still looked cute, but is shocked if you say that he looks "cool" instead.
    • When Gantu demands that the group hand over Stitch, he’s with Floyd in not wanting to comply due to lacking trust in Gantu… and also because Stitch is cuter than Gantu and he’s more inclined to trust Stitch because he’s cute.
  • Stealth Hi/Bye: He has a habit of appearing out of nowhere when people least expect it, such as showing up suddenly in front of Yuu, Grim and the Heartslabyul boys while Cater talks about the various dorms out of hearing range of the other Diasomnia boys in Chapter 1.
  • Strange Minds Think Alike: In "Lost in the Book with Stitch", he and Floyd are both on the same wavelength and want to have fun with their time on the unknown inhabited island, to the rest of the group's horror.
  • Story-Breaker Power: Lilia's experience and acing his task in the second day of the second Vargas Camp event has him being excused from the rest of the training camp along with Malleus as they both would have made things too easy for the other students.
  • Taking the Heat: Another factor of Lilia's exile is Lilia willingly taking the blame from the soldiers under him, Baul included and took exile so the rest of the soldiers under his command won't be blamed.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Tomato juice.
  • Trash of the Titans: Lilia's room is utterly messy and cluttered with various trinkets to a point of chaotic in comparison to Floyd's own room which, while messy, still has some sense of organization. In Chapter 7, Silver found him keeping some of his old test papers, completely unusable computer Keyboard and expired cafe voucher amongst them.
  • Vocal Dissonance: He looks like a cute young boy, but sounds and talks like an old man. In Chapter 5, Vil even lampshades this when evaluating Lilia in the VDC audition.
  • Wacky Parent, Serious Child: The wacky, wannabe "hip" parent to Silver's perpetually serious, if not a bit naive, child.
  • What You Are in the Dark: Silver saw a glimpse of Lilia's memories and saw that Lilia had a chance to actually kill him as a baby to get his revenge for Meleanor's death, but eventually decided not to because it would paint Lilia as a hypocrite in Malleus's eyes after how much he preached Leverne's words to his son about learning about humans and eventually decided to adopt Silver.
  • Why Couldn't You Save Them?: Part of the reason for Lilia's exile is the Senate blaming Lilia for ensuring the safety of Malleus and tells Lilia that he is a coward for running away from battle when he could have stayed to protect Meleanor's life, not caring nor wanting to listen that Meleanor herself volunteer to stay back and Face Death with Dignity.
