Heartslabyul

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/heartslabyul.png
Founded on the severity of the Queen of Hearts, Heartslabyul is known for having a long list of rules to follow as created by the Queen of Hearts. Each member is expected to follow all 810 of them; failure of even one will result in their beheading.

The dorm and its members are twisted from Alice in Wonderland.

  • Facial Markings: All of Heartslabyul's members use makeup to apply markings on their faces to indicate their playing card suit as designated by their dorm leader, who is the sole exception.
  • Flower Motifs: Every member wears a white rose with red paint dripped on it on their dorm outfits.
  • Meaningful Name: Each of the known dorm members has a name connected to their Playing Card Motif.
    • "Labyul" was chosen because it resembles the word "labyrinth", going in line with the maze-like aesthetic of "Alice in Wonderland".
  • Playing Card Motifs: As per a dorm themed after the cards from Alice in Wonderland.
  • Red and Black and Evil All Over: Subverted—Heartslabyul's house colours are red and black, but all of them are generally decent people, if not nominal heroes during their worst moments. Unless you're talking about Riddle in his Overblot form.

    Riddle Rosehearts

Voiced by: Natsuki Hanae, Miyuki Sato (child)
Twisted from: The Queen of Hearts
Grade: Second year

The dorm leader of Heartslabyul. Rigid and unyielding, Riddle is a strict follower of the Queen of Heart's rules and leads Heartlabyul with an iron grip. Short-tempered, unforgiving, and powerful, he is the feared enforcer of the rules.

  • Accidental Hug: An accidental high-five, rather. He and Azul end up sharing this heartwarming moment of camaraderie after they defeat an ancient phantom together in Chapter 6; they immediately pull away from each other once they realize what happened.
  • Abusive Parents: His mother in particular micromanaged him to a fault, resulting in his attitude to this day.
    • As the Fridge page elaborates on, she pretty much starved Riddle to the point of potential malnutrition due to forcing him to eat a very small amount of calories a day.
  • Adaptational Villainy: In the game, under the influence of overblot, Riddle attempts to use his magic to command all rose trees to hurt everyone who betrays him. In Episode of Heartslabyul, Riddle has the intention to murder Ace as he commands all the rose trees to tear him into shreds.
  • Alliterative Name: Riddle Rosehearts.
  • Animal Lover: A minor case. Riddle seems to have a fondness for hedgehogs that exceeds what is necessary from the rules, plays with the little mouse that was sleeping in the tea pot during the unbirthday party, and takes great care of the horses (notably his own horse, Vorpal) in his equestrian club.
  • Badass Adorable: His ferocious temper and overbearing strictness aside, his youthful appearance makes him as cute as he is powerful. Becomes a bit of a darker variant since said appearance is potentially a result of his mother's abuse as explained above...
  • Badass in Distress: He and all the other overblot victims are captured by S.T.Y.X. in the Ignihyde arc. Bonus points since Riddle was the only one knocked unconscious since he gave the strongest fight.
  • Berserk Button:
    • As one poor unfortunate ghost found out during the Ghost Marriage event, Riddle absolutely hates it when someone calls him short. Said ghost ended up not only being collared by Off with Your Head, he was also set on fire.
    • In Episode of Heartslabyul, not only does Riddle hate when students refuse to enroll in Night Raven College and interrupt the important ceremony, but he really hates someone getting his way of his business. Riddle becomes furious at Yuuken for getting his own way dealing with Grim's rampage.
  • Big Damn Heroes: Subverted in Episode of Heartslabyul arc of the official manga. Riddle saves Ace and Deuce from being killed by the Faceless Monster by blasting it with his fire magic and destroying it completely. However, it turns out he did it so that he could sic "Off With Your Head!" on them because they supposedly broke a rule they had no idea existed, proceeds to have Cater and Trey literally drag them back to the dorm for more punishments, and again threatens Yuuken to stay out of his way if the magicless newcomer knows what's good for him.
    • Even better? Riddle does this even after Crowley, who has higher authority over him, explained to him the situation regarding Ace, Deuce, and Yuuken as well as informed him that they would be expelled if they do not return with the demanded crystal.
  • Broken Tears: After recovering from his Overblot.
  • Burning with Anger: Riddle's rage is very often accompanied by flames burning in the background. It's almost funny how often it happens.
  • Can't Take Criticism: Prior to his Character Development.
  • Catchphrase: He has different variations of saying he is the “most correct”.
    • Variations of "Off with your head!" and "It'll be off with your head." are also quite common from Riddle.
  • Character Development: After overblotting and the scolding he receives from Ace, he relaxes on enforcing the rules a bit and is shown to be slightly less strict than he was before — though his harsher tendencies don't go away completely and he still threatens to behead people who do not follow the rules.
  • Childhood Friends: With Trey and Che'nya.
  • Clocks of Control: According to the Official Guide, the crown and the spikes protruding from his back when he Overblots are designed with clock motifs, and as the rest of this page may suggest, it's clear that Riddle himself highly values order and control.
  • Control Freak:
    • He has every single one of the dorm rules memorized and follows them obsessively, quickly losing his temper and punishing his dorm residents if they break even the most obscure, inconsequential rule. He eventually loosens up a little after recovering from his Overblot.
    • In Episode of Heartslabyul, Riddle wants to change everyone's behaviors at Night Raven College even though there aren’t Heartslabyul residents.
  • Cool Crown: He wears one similar to the Queen of Hearts with his dormitory uniform.
  • Disappeared Dad: Riddle rarely mentions his father (since he was never part of his early childhood) and he only talks about his mother. This implies it's either from Parental Neglect due to his work as a healer or he has a more strained relationship with his father than his mother.
  • Disproportionate Retribution: He 'beheads' his dorm members for the most minor rule infringements, even if the culprits weren't aware the (often absurd) rule even existed.
  • Dull Eyes of Unhappiness: Riddle’s eyes have become completely dull under the overblot’s influence in Episode of Heartslabyul.
  • Easily Forgiven: Downplayed. Ace initially refuses to let him get off easy for nearly killing everyone during his overblot enduced freak out though it's implied by the end of his scolding that Ace was putting on a tough front and was also moved by Riddle's tears.
  • Expy: Appearance-wise, to Ciel Phantomhive.
  • Fatal Flaw: Wrath. He's quick to anger and ends up punishing a lot of the dorm members simply because he was in a bad mood. This is the main reason for his Overblot.
  • Fiery Redhead: A redhead with an awful temper to match, though after the events of Chapter 1, Riddle has mellowed out a little.
  • Fire/Ice Duo: Him and Azul during their duo battles against the phantoms in Chapter 6.
  • Fire/Water Juxtaposition: Riddle is fire while Azul represents water. Their dorm SSR cards possess those elements as well, even having Duo Magic with each other, with Riddle's card bearing more focus on attack while Azul's focuses more on healing and defense. Additionally, while they're usually formal with one another, Chapter 6 reveals that their differing personalities make them susceptible to arguments & disagreements; Riddle's self-assured outlook in life doesn't work well against the more sensitive, insecure, and careful Azul. It takes a while for them work things out and finally treat each other as equals.
  • Flower Motifs: Roses; it's in his very name.
  • Freudian Excuse Is No Excuse: As Ace angrily informs him, his overbearing mother and suffocating childhood don't excuse his tyranny over his dorm members.
  • Hair Antennae: Has two locks of hair curving down from the top of his head to form a heart shape. When he's surprised or shocked, the two hair locks shoot up, making him look similar to a rabbit.
  • Hair-Trigger Temper: Riddle's anger management is sorely lacking, especially when he sees someone break the rules. After the events of Chapter 1, however, he seems to have mellowed out enough to overlook a few inconsequential infractions.
  • High-Pressure Emotion: When angered, his whole face turns red to complete his furious expression. He's the only character shown to do this, as it serves as a reference to the Queen of Hearts of whom he's twisted from.
  • Glass Cannon: Implied. As Idia notes after the simulation tests Riddle has become a very powerful magician thanks to training from early on and his magic pool exceeds many of those his age. With that said Idia also notes that Riddle is still quite weak physically and can be heavily affected mentally by external factors, not to mention he accumulates blot rather quickly in comparison to his peers.
  • In-Series Nickname:
    • Gets nicknamed "Goldfish" note by Floyd because of his red hair and (when angered) face, much to his annoyance.
    • Rook calls him "Roi des Roses".
    • Floyd temporarily calls him "White Killifish" note after his hair change in the final parts of Chapter 6.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: After he mellows out following his Overblot, he still remains a stickler for the rules, but shows moments of kindness to his juniors as well as Trey and Cater from time to time.
  • Lethal Chef: Downplayed. Riddle's first attempt at making his own tarts impressed the other members due to its immaculate presentation. Unfortunately, the taste ended up being too salty because despite following the recipe to a T, Riddle genuinely believed Trey's joke about using oyster sauce as the secret ingredient and put quite a lot as the amount wasn't specified. Trey ends up laughing his heart out when he realized that Riddle took that anecdote seriously.
    • His Master Chef story also hints that, while certainly nowhere near the levels of Lilia, cooking is definitely not his strong suit and Malleus even says he's disappointed in Riddle for this.
  • Meaningful Name: Riddle's name may be a reference to either the numerous riddles in both the movie and book versions of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland or Alice Liddel note, the girl whom Lewis Carroll befriended in life and wrote the story for, while his family name is a direct reference to the character he's twisted from—'rose' from the favourite flower of the Queen of Hearts and 'hearts' from the suit the Queen is a part of.
  • The Napoleon: The shortest known character in Heartslabyul dorm and fourth-shortest character overall, but holds a respected position as the dorm leader with a fierce personality to match.
  • Off with His Head!: His unique magic is literally called just that. However, instead of actually beheading the target, it restricts the target from using magic with a locked collar until Riddle himself removes it.
  • Pet the Dog: Has one of these towards Yuu at the beginning of Chapter 2 when he fixes their tie for them.
  • Playing Card Motifs: The Queen of Hearts, for obvious reasons.
  • Playing with Fire: Riddle seems to be very adapt at fire magic as seen in his Ghost Bride story, the beginning of the official manga, and other various times. Pretty suited for a character who is quick to anger and is even associated with Wrath.
    • His SSR Dorm Uniform card in particular has both spells being fire, not to mention that card currently has the highest attack stat in the game.
  • Power Nullifier: Riddle's unique magic, "Off with Your Head", functions as this. Any poor sap unlucky enough to be on the receiving end gets a heart-shaped collar around their neck and is unable to use their magic until Riddle removes it. This is the punishment doled out to anyone who breaks Heartslabyul's rules, unwittingly or otherwise. However, Riddle's unique magic can still be overwritten, such as using Trey's Doodle Suit/Paint the Roses to temporarily overwrite his Unique Magic and Floyd with his Unique Magic, or if you casted a Defensive spell first before it hits such as the case with Leona.
  • Prematurely Grey-Haired: Played with; as well as a temporary variant. Riddle's hair turns white in Episode 6 not because of severe stress and trauma, but because he got too close to the Underworld during his battle with Overblot!Idia and Phantom!Ortho. Had he stayed there for a minute longer, the Underworld's Rapid Aging effects would have taken a larger toll on him. Thanks to Azul's quick judgment, however, he was able to escape before the aging took a more permanent effect. He sports white hair up until the final chapters of the Ignihyde arc, looking youthful in spite of it and was able to recover in a week.
    • In typical Twisted Wonderland Mythology Gag fashion, this also seems to serve as a reference to the White Queen of the Wonderland lore, who also possessed strikingly white hair.
  • Red and Black and Evil All Over: In his Overblot form.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: His eyes turned red in his Overbolt form. Interesting enough, he's the only case of an Overblot victim to obtain these.
  • Red Is Violent: Wears mostly red and has a Hair-Trigger Temper. At his angriest, his face even turns very, very red.
  • Selfless Wish: His wish in the Wish Upon A Star event is "For the Heartslabyul test averages in the next term to put other dorms to shame."
  • Serious Business: How he views all 810 of the dorm rules, even if a lot of them are nonsensical.
  • Squishy Wizard: Riddle is known to excel in the magical arts but has quite the weak physical stats. This is shown when in one P.E. story he has a very slow running time but is very capable on the broom.
  • Starter Villain: Compared to the later Arc Villains, he's the most tame, only wanting to uphold the 810 rules of his dorm whereas the others actively conspire plans and have genuine malicious intent. He also is shown to be reluctant about his stricter tendencies, as he views his actions as what must be done to maintain order.
  • Sweet Tooth: A natural product of his mother's forbidding him to eat sweets and restricting his diet all his life.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Tarts. In particular, strawberry tarts.
  • Ungrateful Bastard: In Episode of Heartslabyul, Riddle does not thank Yuuken for saving his life from Grim even though it wasn't necessary because Riddle is a magic user. Instead, he threatens Yuuken that if he ever gets in his way again, he will punish him.
  • Unknown Rival: Riddle doesn't realize that Azul sees him as an academic rival, which is somewhat justified, as their values towards academics differ from one another. Riddle expends immense focus on his studies, while Azul multi-tasks and often prioritizes his businesses over school. This leads to the following, hilarious exchange:
Azul: Well, it's mere fact that I can't ever seem to take over the number one spot from you.
Riddle, baffled: ...Huh? You were trying to compete with me?
    Azul: Is that not allowed...?
Riddle: No... It's just that it didn't seem like you were trying...
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: He views himself as this, believing his Drill Sergeant Nasty tendencies and constant 'beheading' of his dormmates are required to maintain order.
  • Worthy Opponent: Azul perceives Riddle as this, and Riddle feels the same way, having admitted in Endless Halloween that among all the second-year dorm leaders, Azul was the most worthy of standing at his side as an equal.

    Ace Trappola
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/heartslabyul_chara_ace_detail_a.png
Voiced by: Seiichirō Yamashita
Twisted from: Ace of Hearts
Grade: First year

A freshman with a penchant for taunting others and shirking away from stiff matters such as rules and regulations. Ace is a freewheeling student and his impulsive and selfish actions often lead him into trouble. Underneath the veneer of a taunting troublemaker, Ace is a perceptive person with a loyal core.

  • Accidental Misnaming: He calls Deuce 'Juice' immediately after learning his name in the prologue.
  • Adaptational Jerkass: Minor example. In the light novel Ace is meaner during his first interaction with Grimm and Yuuya, cutting into Yuuya for being a magicless human way more than he did to Yuu in the game. However, as in the game Ace (and later Deuce) warms up to the newcomer, and he even apologizes to Yuuya for his earlier behavior.
  • Anger Born of Worry: Light example. When Yuu and Grim return to campus near the end of Chapter 6 both Ace and Deuce smack the two of them on top of the head for disappearing while they were in the infirmary and wouldn't have been able to help.
  • Be Careful What You Wish For: When talking about the Queen of Hearts Ace commends her for being a severe ruler, saying that he would much prefer a ruler like her to one who is simply kind. Soon afterward Ace proceeds to find himself on the bad side of Heartsabyul's current Control Freak of a dorm leader, at first because of his own misdoings but later for unintentionally breaking nonsensical rules.
  • Big Brother Worship: It is implied that Ace looks up to his older brother considering how much he talks about him. It's especially notable that he talks about him a lot compared to how much other characters talk about their own relatives (besides the ones already part of the main cast).
  • Blow You Away: In the prologue, most of the magic he does is wind-based.
  • Brilliant, but Lazy: Downplayed. Ace has a talent for memorisation and isn't unintelligent by any means, but he's also self-centred and lazy and would rather put effort into roundabout schemes and tricks than into studying and assigned work. It bites him in the ass in Chapter 3, when he makes a deal with Azul to get good test grades but fails to attain the rank stipulated in the contract, resulting in his forced servitude.
  • Bros Before Hoes: Feels this way according to his Groom-For-A-Day SSR story, where claims he prefers to hang out with guy friends over girls after an uneventful relationship with his ex-girlfriend.
  • Brutal Honesty: Ace isn't one to mince words and will speak what's on his mind regardless if it makes him look cold or insensitive.
  • Bullying a Dragon: While his "The Reason You Suck" Speech directed at Riddle is justified, he's partially the cause of Riddle's Overblot.
  • Butt-Monkey: A lot of bad things tend to happen to him.
  • Cool and Unusual Punishment: In Episode of Heartslabyul, Ace and Deuce's punishment for unintentionally breaking the Queen of Hearts' rules is having to sing to the bunch of hedgehogs with the other Heartslabyul members.
  • Curtains Match the Window: He has red hair and red eyes.
  • Demonic Possession: Briefly during the second Halloween event, Ace is startled by a ghost which allows it to take over his body and attack his group members. Unfortunately for the ghost, the two students Ace had ended up with were Leona and Floyd...
  • Fire-Forged Friends: Becomes this with Deuce, Yuu and Grim over the course of the main story.
  • Freudian Excuse Is No Excuse: Going by his rants toward Riddle and Eliza, Ace seems to be a strong believer that no matter how bad one's backstory is it will never justify one going to absolute extremes.
  • Hidden Depths:
    • In Chapter 3, Ace shows himself to be good at acting when the situation calls for it. He was able to fool a merman guard while creating a distraction so Yuu, Deuce, Grim and Jack could break into the museum.
    • Ace's Ghost Marriage SSR personal story reveals that he had a girlfriend in middle school, but ghosted her because she was too 'boring'. Ortho also notes that his calling Eliza out on her actions throughout the event reveals Ace's genuine thoughts about romance, i.e. that love isn't something that can be decided at first glance and instead should be between people who genuinely enjoy each other's company.
    • His SSR Birthday card personal story has him talk about how his father is magicless but is very well-versed in magic tricks. Ace and his own brother also learned from him and he respected his father a lot.
  • Hypocritical Heartwarming: Makes fun of Yuu for not being able to use magic during their first few interactions, but later punches Riddle out for doing the same thing before giving him a "The Reason You Suck" Speech.
  • In-Series Nickname:
    • Crab note, courtesy of Floyd.
    • Rook calls him "Monsieur Heart".
    • Is called "Potato No. 1" by Vil.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: He's a good person at heart, but it may not be obvious at first.
  • The Main Characters Do Everything: Helps to solve problems within the other dorms in the main story just as much as he contributes to them. The only exception so far has been chapter 4 as he was Put on a Bus for a majority of the story with Deuce.
  • Meaningful Name: His name is Ace, as in 'the Ace in a suit of cards'. His last name Trappola is one of the earliest known card games in which the ace card is promoted as the highest suit.
  • Mundane Wish: His wish in the Wish Upon A Star event is "For Grim to not cause any more problems!"
  • Near-Death Experience: In Episode of Heartslabyul, Ace and Deuce almost lose their lives to the Faceless Monster, who wants to kill them before it disappears completely. Luckily, Riddle makes it just in time and saves them by destroying the Faceless Monster with his magic.
  • Odd Name Out: Unlike the other members of Heartslabyul sans Riddle, Ace's surname is not a card suit. Trappola is a type of Venetian card game in which the ace card is promoted as the highest card suit.
  • Playing Card Motifs: The Hearts suit, and the Ace. If you put them together, it'll be the Ace of Hearts.
  • Portmanteau Couple Name: Cater gives him and Deuce a non-romantic pair name (A-Deuce) In-Universe, as they usually hang around together and their names both end with the su sound in Japanese.
  • Put on a Bus:
    • For a good portion of the main story Chapter 4 due to going home for Winter vacation. He comes back later, though.
    • In the middle of Chapter 6, Ace and Deuce weren't able to help Yuu, Epel, and Rook to rescue Grim and the previous Overblot victims as they remain unconscious in the school infirmary.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: Gives a scathing one to Riddle after punching him, telling Riddle that his Freudian Excuse Is No Excuse at all and, as a bonus, ripping into Trey for enabling him out of pity. He also delivers one to Eliza and her attendants in Ghost Marriage, though Eliza ends up dismissing it while blaming everyone else for ruining her special occassion.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: The red to Deuce’s blue, though they can swap when Deuce's 'bad boy' switch is flipped.
  • The Rival: Him and Deuce.
  • The Slacker: Downplayed. He typically avoids putting in more than the bare minimum of effort, but will work eagerly if he thinks there's an incentive, such as when he helps Trey carry groceries while trying to trick him into revealing likely first-year test questions.
  • Those Two Guys: Downplayed due to his plot significance in the main story, but he is almost always seen with Deuce, even when Yuu and Grim aren’t around.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Cherry pie and hamburgers.
  • Tritagonist: By virtue of being close friends with Yuu and Grim, he and Deuce have significant focus in the main story outside of their dorm chapter.
  • True Companions: With Yuu and Grim in the main story. It's exemplified in chapter 4 when Grim sends out a message for help when he and Yuu are being held hostage in the Scarabia. Deuce and Ace spend the entirety of the chapter using public transport to come back to the college and save them. By the time they arrive, the situation has been dealt with.
  • Tsundere: While not on Jack's level, he'll usually deny caring about Yuu and Grim despite it being clearly shown through his actions, such as when he made the long trip back to Night Raven to save them in main story chapter 4. Grim sees right through this everytime and says he's just not being honest.
  • Vitriolic Best Buds: With Deuce. Yuu and Grim actually take notice of this dynamic and claim that they were made for one another.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Gives a "The Reason You Suck" Speech to Riddle as he feels that being punished for even the most minor of infractions is going way too far. Riddle does not take it well.

    Deuce Spade
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/heartslabyul_chara_deuce_detail_a.png
Voiced by: Chiaki Kobayashi
Twisted from: Two of Spades
Grade: First year

A serious and diligent young man who enrolled in the College with hopes of becoming an excellent magician. Deuce aims to become a honor roll student and is determined to academically succeed, but he can be dense and tends to become swept up in conflict due to Ace and Grim.

  • Adaptational Early Appearance: In the game, Deuce makes his official appearance in Prologue 12. In Episode of Heartslabyul, he appears with Ace to meet Yuuken, where Ace answers Yuuken's question about the Queen of Hearts in the manga version of the Prologue.
  • Anger Born of Worry: Light example. When Yuu and Grim return to campus near the end of Chapter 6 both Deuce and Ace smack the two of them on top of the head for disappearing while they were in the infirmary and wouldn't have been able to help.
  • Attack Reflector: Deuce's newly awakened Unique Magic, "Bet The Limit/Double Down", that he used to defeat an overblotted Vil works like this. If the opponent he's facing is powerful, he'll attack on a power level equal to them.
  • Book Dumb: Even though he tries really hard to be an honor student, Deuce still struggles academically to the point where his grades are on par with Ace's and Grim's.
  • Cannot Talk to Women: In the Ghost Marriage event, when he tries to propose to Eliza, he ends up staying stiff and unsure of what to say, resulting in his getting slapped. In Ace's Ghost Marriage SSR personal story, he also mentions being unable to talk to any women outside of his own mother.
  • Cool and Unusual Punishment: In Episode of Heartslabyul, Deuce and Ace's punishment for unintentionally breaking the Queen of Hearts' rules is having to sing to the bunch of hedgehogs with the other Heartslabyul members.
  • Cool Bike: He's a 'magical wheel' enthusiast and even tried to start an interest group as an official school club.
  • Delinquents: He used to be one until he overheard his mother crying to his grandmother on the phone asking whether she brought him up the right way. He has since then changed his ways by trying to be an honor student, but when he gets mad or passionate, he sometimes slips back into his old personality.
  • Delinquent Hair: Formerly, though the players have yet to see it. He used to bleach his hair blonde, which is the standard delinquent hair color in Anime. In Episode of Heartslabyul, Deuce is depicted with blond hair in the past.
  • Demonic Possession: During the second Halloween event, Endless Halloween Night. Deuce is one of the many students kidnapped and taken over by ghosts. His ghost in particular makes him act like a terrified child.
  • Disappeared Dad: Deuce's father is never seen or mentioned once within the game. In Chapter 1-12, Deuce mentions to Yuu and Grim that he's the only guy in the family and often helps his mother with heavy loads. It is unknown whether his father died when he was young or left his mother before he was born.
  • Face of a Thug: In Ace's Ghost Marriage SSR personal story, he admits that nobody dared to approach him in middle school due to his reputation and fearful expression.
  • Fire-Forged Friends: Becomes this with Ace, Grim and Yuu over the course of the main story.
  • Gadgeteer Genius: According to Cater in Malleus's SR Laboratory Uniform card story, Deuce was the one who fixed the stereo in the Heartslabyul dorm lounge. Malleus then seeks Deuce out to get him to fix his Tamagotchi-esque Gao-Gao Dragon-kun toy.
  • In-Series Nickname:
    • Floyd calls him "Mackerel" note.
    • Labeled "Potato No. 2", courtesy of Vil.
    • Ace in the English version sometimes calls him "Loosey-Duecey".
  • The Main Characters Do Everything: Is more often than not tasked with helping to solve problems within the other dorms in the main story. The only exception so far has been chapter 4 as he was Put on a Bus for a majority of the story along with Ace.
  • Meaningful Name: Deuce Spade, a.k.a. the Two of Spades.
  • Momma's Boy: He holds his mother in high regard and stopped being a delinquent for her sake.
  • Near-Death Experience: In Episode of Heartslabyul, Deuce and Ace almost lose their lives to the Faceless Monster, who wants to kill them before it disappears completely. Luckily, Riddle makes it just in time and saves them by destroying the Faceless Monster with his magic.
  • Nice Guy: When he's not activating his 'delinquent' mode, he's the most level-headed and empathetic member of the main group. This is exemplified in the main story chapter 5 when he shows the most concern for a clearly distressed Epel.
  • Not So Above It All: Deuce is serious about his desire to become a honor student and he dislikes being compared to Ace, but the two are quite similar. He doesn't mind asking Yuu to get him an iced latte as a favor to catch Grim when the latter runs away from lessons in Episode 1 and he wants to find the culprit behind Episode 2 to improve his reputation rather than out of kindness.
  • Playing Card Motifs: The Spades suit, and the 'Two' card. Put them together and you get the Two of Spades.
  • Pointless Band-Aid: In Episode of Heartslabyul, Deuce used to wear a band-aid on his cheek just below the left eye when he was in middle school.
  • Portmanteau Couple Name: Cater gives him and Ace a non-romantic pair name (A-Deuce) In-Universe, as they usually hang around together and their names both end with the su sound in Japanese.
    • The English translation has Cater calling them Hunting Season, referencing having an ace and a two in poker.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: The blue to Ace’s red, though they can swap when Deuce's 'bad boy' switch is flipped.
  • The Rival: There's a rivalry between him and Ace.
  • Super Gullible: He can be rather naive.
    • When Vil sarcastically tells him to compliment his seedlings to help them grow in his SR lab coat card story, he earnestly attempts to sweet-talk them and praises their beauty, much to Ruggie's consternation.
    • He believed that all eggs used in cooking were already fertilised for sixteen years straight, and suffers a Heroic BSoD when Yuu informs him that this is not the case.
  • Those Two Guys: Downplayed due to his plot significance in the main story, but he is almost always seen with Ace, even when Yuu and Grim aren’t around.
  • Token Good Teammate: Despite being a former delinquent, Deuce is by far the most good natured member of Heartslabyul that sees the virtue in others (including Riddle, who he appears to respect to some degree prior to his Character Development) and rarely acts out of selfish desire. While he does have a "bad boy" switch, he's only shown to flip it on when it's necessary, such as when he needs to defend himself or others, especially in the main story. In the main quartet, he balances out Ace and Grim's selfish whims and acts as the more level-headed companion, particularly in situations where Yuu isn't speaking.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Omelette rice.
  • Tritagonist: By virtue of being close friends with Yuu and Grim, he and Ace have significant focus in the main story outside of their dorm chapter.
By the time they arrive, the situation has been dealt with, however.
  • Vitriolic Best Buds: With Ace. Yuu and Grim actually take notice of this dynamic and claim that they were made for one another.

Voiced by: Tatsuyuki Kobayashi
Twisted from: Four of Diamonds
Grade: Third year

A sociable and cheerful third-year student who is always up-to-date on the latest trends. However, he can sometimes be cruel.

  • Adaptational Early Appearance: In the game, Cater and Trey make their official appearance in Episode 1. In Episode of Heartslabyul, Cater and Trey appear during Grim's rampage in the manga version of the Prologue.
  • Ambiguously Bi: Expresses interest in women on numerous occasions but is obsessed with the beautiful male students of Pomefiore, namely being Vil and Epel. He says to Vil that he thought of dating him after his ploy to manipulate a MagiCam photo out of him fails and he appears to be openly flirty with male students, even calling a number of the main cast members "cute".
  • Big Sister Bully: Implied; before going home for the winter break, he complains about how his two older sisters boss him around and make him run errands for them. He also states that his family values 'cuteness' to the point where he gets criticised relentlessly if his purchases don't meet their standards.
  • Canon Foreigner: Averted Trope for both himself and the character he's twisted from. While the original Alice in Wonderland movie gives primary focus to the Heart, Spade and Clover Card Soldiers, Diamond Card Soldiers do appear in certain shots in the movie, with the Four of Diamonds appearing very, ''very'' briefly near the end of Alice's trial sequence, making the Four of Diamonds a Canon Character All Along, and Cater as well, by extension.
  • Cute Little Fangs: He has these.
  • Death Glare: In Episode of Heartslabyul, Cater and Trey gives one at Ace and Deuce, who hesitate to sing to bunches of hedgehogs as their punishment for breaking the Queen of Hearts' rules and for Ace unintentionally offending Riddle.
  • Demonic Possession: During the second Halloween event, Endless Halloween Night. Cater is one of the many students kidnapped and taken over by ghosts. His ghost in particular makes him act like a jerk and foul-mouth person.
  • Does Not Like Spam: His least favorite food is sweets. Cater dislike of sweets started when he was 10 years old when his mother and sisters became interested in making sweets. They forced him to eat their sweets every day, which resulted in him getting tired of eating them and even detesting them. The end of his personal birthday story, shows him eating ramen instead of a slice of cake.
  • Get Back in the Closet: While his sexuality has never been concretely stated, Cater was hit with this upon the release of the official English version. Many instances of him flirting with boys or expressing interest in them were toned down, and the story in which he tells Vil that he wants to date him completely removes his attempt to ask him out. Many instances of him calling characters cute were also removed or otherwise changed to a less flirtatious compliment.
  • In-Series Nickname:
    • Floyd calls him "Coralfish" note.
    • Rook calls him "Monsieur MagiCam".
  • It Was a Gift: Cater's phone case was a present from Lilia after he failed to get it despite using his Unique Magic to increase his chances of winning.
  • Japanese Honorifics: Is notable for using "-chan" for all the first years and "-kun" for the second years.
  • Manipulative Bastard: Downplayed, but one of his most prominent traits as he's seen quite often buttering up the other characters to get something out of them rather than being straight forward about what he wants. For instance, Cater showers Vil with compliments in hopes that he will be willing to take a photo with him to boost the popularity of his MagiCam account. He also approached Malleus with the false guise of wanting to be friends for the same reason, which Malleus notices immediately.
  • Me's a Crowd: His unique magic "Split Card" allows him to create multiple copies of himself.
  • Meaningful Name: Not as obvious as the rest, but Cater's name might be a variant of 'quarter' or quatre, meaning 'four' in English and French respectively. His family name is a direct reference to the Diamonds suit of cards.
  • Mundane Wish: His wish in the Wish Upon A Star event is "to peacefully enjoy my school life."
  • No Sense of Personal Space: Episode of Heartslabyul shows Cater has no problem getting close to students even though he just met them by either take a selfie with his smartphone or attempting to get along with them. He does this a lot to Ace and Deuce after they first meet.
  • Odd Name Out: Riddle aside, Cater's name is the only one not mentioned in Alice in Wonderland since the Painting the Roses Red scene only depicts the Ace, Deuce (Two) and Trey (Three) of Clubs. The four of diamonds only shows up very briefly near the end of Alice's trial sequence.
  • Only Sane Man: In the Light Music Club, he's the most normal one.
  • Phoneaholic Teenager: A male example. He is often seen with his phone taking pictures of things he does in his school life and has a following on Magical Camera, an Instagram-esque app in Twisted Wonderland's universe.
    • This bites him in the ass in the Happy Beans Day! Reclaim the Golden Harp! event, where Trey and Rook take advantage of Cater's habits to track him, Yuu and Grim down. Fortunately, Jade also used MagiCam to find and reunite with them after a quick detour to Mr. S's Mystery Shop in his Beans Camo card story.
  • The Pirates Who Don't Do Anything: He, Kalim and Lilia are the only members of the light music club, but they don't actually do anything music-related and just use the club room as a place to hang out and pass the time. Cater's Birthday Personal Story shed some light to this. According to Cater, the member's own personal preferences with music clashed (Kalim wanting to perform his home's music and Lilia preferring to perform a metal genre song) so neither of them can get anything much done.
  • Playing Card Motifs: The Diamonds suit; the loading screen specifically states that it's the Four of Diamonds.
  • Real Men Hate Sugar: Inverted; the flashy, effeminate Cater has a genuine dislike for sweets and fears anyone finding out.
  • Sad Clown: A few occassions imply this.
    • His SR ceremonial robes story has him express, once alone, that he doesn't really care about clout-chasing and only appears to put on an act for it, which wears him down greatly.
    • In his SR Lab Coat personal story, it's stated that when cultivated, mandrakes will take on a shape reflecting the cultivator who put time and magic into them. Cater's first mandrake is cute in appearance, his second has unusual red coloring with a trump card design and appears to be holding a guitar… and his third is noted to look unusually pessimistic. When Lilia and Vil call him out on this, he gets flustered and defensive and immediately cultivates three more flashy, 'fun' mandrakes to compensate.
Cater: Cay-kun should always be excited and happy after all~
    • His Halloween SSR personality eventually play this straight and confirm that Cater is indeed a Sad Clown and Stepford Smiler at the same time. His family always moved from place to place at least every two years in the past due to his father's job, leaving him with little to no long-time friends growing up. His lonely life in the past made him convinced that "friends" are "superficial" and temporary companions as they will go their separate ways in the future.
  • The Social Expert: In Chapter 1, he's the one who explains to the first-years (Ace, Deuce, Grim and Yuu) the personalities of the various houses in Night Raven College. However, while he has friends outside Heartslabyul, he finds Ignihyde and Diasomnia "hard to approach".
  • Third-Person Person: Tends to refer to himself as 'Cay-kun'. Possibly justified, given his unique magic.
  • Trademark Favorite Food:
    • In Cater's Birthday Suit SSR personal story, grilled lamb meat with diablo sauce is his favorite food because it's tasty and it sounds cool.
    • Cater also loves eating spicy ramen since it keeps him motivated.

    Trey Clover

Voiced by: Ryōta Suzuki, Miho Wataya (child)
Twisted from: Three of Clubs
Grade: Third year

The vice dorm head of Heartslabyul. In comparison to Riddle, he's much more calm and relaxed.

  • Adaptational Early Appearance: In the game, Trey and Cater make their official appearance in Episode 1. In Episode of Heartslabyul, Trey and Cater appear during Grim's rampage in the manga version of the Prologue.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: While rarely angered, Cater notes that Trey can bear a grudge for a long time. He can also be rather vindictive, as the Heartslabyul first-years discover when they complain about eating the same cake flavours at every Unbirthday party and imply that Trey's job is 'easy'. While appearing calm, he simply suggests that the first-years learn to make their favourite cakes to serve at the next party, knowing full well that they'll fail and incur Riddle's wrath.
  • Big Brother Instinct: He sometimes instinctively treats Ace and Deuce like he would his younger siblings at home, especially where dental hygiene is concerned.
  • Big Damn Heroes: Trey saves all Heartslabyul members including Yuu and Grim from Riddle’s attack by turning them into cards with his signature spell. In Episode of Heartslabyul, Trey saves Ace’s life from Riddle’s attack, who has the intention to hurt him or worse.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: Downplayed, as Trey's Cool Big Bro attitude is a very genuine aspect to his character. It's just that, Trey... has no problems manipulating others for his own ends (including Riddle of all people!).
  • Childhood Friends: With Riddle and Che'nya.
  • Cool Big Bro: It's implied that most Heartslabyul students see him as this due to his more lenient nature balancing out Riddle's strictness. In addition, he grew up taking care of his own younger siblings.
  • Death Glare: In Episode of Heartslabyul, Trey and Cater gives one at Ace and Deuce, who hesitate to sing to bunches of hedgehogs as their punishment for breaking the Queen of Hearts' rules and for Ace unintentionally offending Riddle.
  • Does Not Like Spam: His least favorite food is mustard. According to his Birthday Suit SSR personal story, Trey doesn't like mustard because he and Che'nya once put it in one of the five cream puffs and tried their hand at the luck of the draw. Trey picked the bad one, and there wasn't any water to wash out the taste and he was tearing up.
  • Dreamworks Face: His default facial expression for both his Live2D model and his lessons and battle sprites.
  • The Gadfly: While it's downplayed, he isn't above a little mischief. When making a chestnut tart for Heartslabyul's Unbirthday party, Trey tells the first years and Grim that the secret ingredient to a good dessert is oyster sauce. They believe him for a while until he reveals that he's just joking. At the next Unbirthday party, this turns into a Brick Joke when Riddle takes it seriously and actually adds oyster sauce to his tarts, with Trey getting a good laugh about it when he finds out.
  • The Generic Guy: Subverted In-Universe. Trey insists that he's just an ordinary guy, which is certainly how most people perceive him… until they find out just how shrewd he can be.
  • Hidden Depths: Despite his usually kind and reliable demeanor, he has a shrewd, calculating side that can shock his schoolmates when first encountered. Rook and Jade are rather surprised to learn that Trey doesn't bake for Riddle simply out of affection, but to placate him somewhat so he's a little less likely to lose his temper with their dormmates.
  • Hollywood Tone-Deaf: The Ghost Marriage story event reveals and imply that Trey is bad at singing.
  • In-Series Nickname: Rook calls him 'Rose Chevalier' due to his close friendship with Riddle. Doubles as an Odd Name Out, as he is the only non-dorm head Rook calls a 'Chevalier' rather than a 'Monsieur'.
  • The Lancer: To Riddle, although he thinks that he's a bit uptight.
  • Lethal Harmless Powers: Trey's usage of 'Doodle Suit/Paint the Roses' makes his Unique Magic seem harmless at a glance. However, because the actual function of his Unique Magic is changing any property of a person or object, rather than one specific trait, this makes Trey capable of being able to nullify Riddle's Unique Magic, even for a moment.
  • Master of Illusion: Trey's unique magic, 'Doodle Suit/Paint the Roses', allows him to change the properties of a certain person or object. He first displays it when he changes the tarts Yuu, Ace, Deuce and Grim were eating to taste like their favourite foods, and later uses it to prevent Overblot!Riddle from causing too much chaos. However, its effects are only temporary.
  • Meaningful Name: Trey Clover, a.k.a. the Three of Clovers/Clubs.
  • Playing Card Motifs: The Clubs suit, more specifically the Three of Clubs.
  • Serenade Your Lover: He attempts to woo Eliza by singing to her in the Ghost Marriage event, but fails spectacularly when he fumbles and likens her veil to bleached cloth and her eyes to grapes.
  • Serious Business: He takes dental hygiene very seriously. Justified, considering the fact he grew up in a family running a cake shop as well as having to make sure his younger siblings keep their teeth healthy.
  • Supreme Chef: Everyone can attest that Trey makes the best desserts.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Candied violets. In Trey's Birthday Suit SSR personal story, the reason why candied violets is his favorite food because he tried them before he started elementary school. He was so amazed that edible flowers existed that he got really fixated on them. He describes the taste as the fragrance of the violets spreads throughout your mouth when you eat them as being so great, it’s like you’re lying in a field of flowers.
  • Yellow Eyes of Sneakiness: Don't let his friendly attitude fool you—he can be just as devious as the rest of Night Raven College's student body, if his yellow eyes didn't make it obvious.
  • You Remind Me of X: As revealed by his second birthday interview, Sebek realizes with much horror that he'd been unconsciously seeing his father in Trey Clover of Heartslabyul. Granted, both Trey and his dad wear eyeglasses and have a shared passion for dental healthcare...
