Savanaclaw

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/savanaclawlogo_4.png
Founded on the stubbornness of The King of Beasts, this dorm excels in sports and martial arts. As a result, many of the students tend to be hot-headed. It's important for students of Savanaclaw to be physically fit in order to survive.

The dorm and its members are twisted from The Lion King (1994).

  • Hot-Blooded: The general trait of Savanaclaw students.
  • Inconsistent Spelling: Savanaclaw sometimes gets misspelt as 'Savannaclaw'.
  • Jerk Jock: While the Night Ravens College has no shortages of such prideful students, Savanaclaw NPC students especially fill into these roles. It’s common to see Savanaclaw students being depicted as cruel bullies that pick on others for very little reason, to the point where it makes Leona look more tame than he actually is.
  • Little Bit Beastly: A majority of the members has some physically animalistic traits, namely ears and a tail. In fact, it seems to be a general requirement for Savanaclaw, something both Cater and Trey comment on. That said, Beastmen are not just limited to Savanaclaw as in "Happy Beans Day 2021", it's mentioned that a cat beastman is one of the students residing and sorted into Heartslabyul. There are also human students who are sorted to Savannaclaw, such as Rook, who was initially sorted into Savanaclaw before he eventually transferred to Pomefiore.
  • Meaningful Name: A mixture of "Savannah" and "Claw", referencing the the African wildlife of which "The Lion King" is based from.
  • Might Makes Right: Students from Savanaclaw seem to live under the doctrine that one's worth is linked to how strong they are. This is probably also their justification for their Jerk Jock tendencies.
  • Too Dumb to Live: Not all the time, but there are instances where Savanaclaw students will try picking fights for the hell of it with people that they really shouldn't. They particularly pick fights with those from Diasomnia due to their rivalry in Magift.

    Leona Kingscholar
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/savanaclaw_chara_leona_detail_a.png
Voiced by: Yuichiro Umehara
Twisted from: Scar
Grade: Third year
Born the second prince and holding the title of dorm leader, Leona does not possess a love for either position. While possessing high levels of magical power, he rarely puts in the effort to demonstrate it, and acts arrogant to those he views as lesser than him.
  • Adaptation Expansion: The light novel went into further depth of Leona's thoughts and motives throughout the Savanaclaw chapter.
  • Always Second Best: A victim of it. He is considered lesser compared to his older brother and his defeat at Malleus' hands drives him to do what he did throughout chapter 2 of the main story.
  • Animal Motifs: Lions.
  • Animal Stereotypes: As a lion, he's associated with royalty and recognized as a powerful magic user, and generally carries himself in a prideful manner. However, he can also be temperamental, lazy and vain.
  • Apathetic Student: Doesn't often want to put any effort into his studies and would rather laze around and sleep.
  • Badass in Distress: He and all the other overblot victims are captured by S.T.Y.X. in the Ignihyde arc.
  • Brilliant, but Lazy: Smart and could easily excel if he put in any effort. Leona would rather nap and laze around than work hard for things he has little interest in, though this might be because of his Always Second Best upbringing.
  • Broken Pedestal: To Jack, who entered Night Raven College because he was inspired by Leona's performance three years ago during the Magical Shift Tournament. Witnessing Leona's lazy attitude and learning that he is responsible for the events of Chapter 2 are quite a blow to Jack. By Chapter 3, Leona is slowly on his way to becoming a Rebuilt Pedestal, but Jack now sees him in a more realistic light.
  • Cat Boy: He has lion ears and a tail.
  • Cats Are Lazy: He is a lion, after all.
  • Cats Are Mean: Leona's not exactly the nicest student enrolled at NRC.
  • Child Hater: Has a dislike for dealing with children and even claims to outright hate them.
  • Cool Uncle: His nephew, Cheka, adores him and believes him to be this.
  • Easily Forgiven: For his actions in Chapter 2 of the main story. Leona pretty much gets a slap on the wrist in the form of being embarrassed by his nephew and having to compete in the tournament with the wounded players vouching for them so they can get their revenge and lost to Diasomnia as a result, despite having told Ruggie to break the bones of the other students and then nearly turning him and everyone else involved into sand. This is sometime after Deuce and Ace were nearly expelled for breaking a chandelier. Given that nobody lives it down for a good while, the trope is downplayed.
  • Every Scar Has a Story: Averted. When discussing how the King of Beasts (Scar) got his signature scar during a Chat with Ruggie, Ruggie asks how Leona got his scar. Leona responds that he doesn't remember since it happened a long time ago.
  • Fatal Flaw: Sloth. Because he keeps beating himself up over being Always Second Best, he gives up easily when things don't go as planned even though he has high levels of magical power. Lilia even calls him out on it, which is the final push leading him to Overblot.
  • Friendship Denial: Claims to hate Malleus, but Silver often catches them talking to each other.
  • Gender-Blender Name: Leona is generally used as a feminine name (it even means "lioness" in Spanish), although it clearly conveys the lion motif that his character is known for.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: To the point where it might be considered his second deadly sin after Sloth, and he's even got green eyes to boot. He clearly holds a deep resentment for his older brother and intially by extension his nephew (at least in the flashbacks) due to his status of being the less desirable heir to the throne as a result of being born second in line. He feels he'll never be number one by his own merit, and therefore he feels the needs to cheat his way to the top, even in things that he acknowledges don't actually affect anything like Magishift tornaments.
  • Held Back in School: He's been held back a year at least once, making him the oldest known non-fae student in the game.
  • Hidden Depths: Despite his arrogance, Leona is revealed to have a deep respect for women, as his homeland is known for holding women in high esteem.
  • Hidden Heart of Gold: Beneath his dismissive jerkass behavior, he’s not that bad of a guy. This is shown through a lot of his Pet the Dog moments.
  • Hope Is Scary: In the light novel, it's revealed that Leona fears of hoping that things might actually change because he had been burned by people around him deriding him for being second best far too many times and seeing how hopeful and optimistic his juniors were made him start to hope again, but he fears things failing again.
  • Hypocrite: His advice for Jamil in Chapter 6 can be seen as this, but in all actuality, it's downplayed. Leona knows just how similar his and Jamil's situations are, and it is for this reason that he gave such advice; because he believed that Jamil was still at a point where he could turn out differently than he did.
  • In-Series Nickname:
    • Rook calls him "Roi des Lions".
    • Floyd calls him "Steller Sea Lion". note
  • Jerkass: He comes off as an unrepentant one in his main story chapters, though he eases up a little over time.
  • Mr. Fanservice: One of the biggest examples of this in the cast.
  • Noodle Incident: In Chapter 3, it's mentioned that Leona signed some sort of contract with Azul before, but this isn't expounded upon as he refuses to elaborate any further. Later, Ruggie points out that Leona probably helped Yuu destroy Azul's contracts because he wanted to take the opportunity to destroy his own.
  • Pet the Dog:
    • His SSR personal story has him helping Jack, who was being bullied by his seniors.
    • Subverted in his SR lab coat uniform story, where he only agrees to help Epel recreate a potion he spilled after Epel mentions that 1) Rook was the one who helped Epel create the potion in the first place, and 2) Epel would have to explain to Rook why the potion was spilled, tracing him back to Leona.
  • Prince Charmless: The second to only prince character in the cast after Malleus who doesn't display any princely traits at all. Unlike most stereotypical princes, he's lazy, selfish and dismissive toward the other characters. However, his first Birthday Suit vignette shows that he knows time and place to act professionally when possible, but otherwise is dismissive outside of professional situations.
  • Refusal of the Call: In Leona's Birthday Suit SSR personal story, when Leona first gets the enrollment invitation from Night Raven College, he ignored it because he was already taught by the kingdom's royal tutor. He finds it troublesome to re-learn things with low level guys and it was a waste of time. However, everything changes once his nephew Cheka was born and all the "fun" at home has gone. Leona has no choice to accept the enrollment invitation because he doesn't want to be around his nephew for longer than necessary.
  • Rich in Dollars, Poor in Sense: He has shown instances of this, possibly owing to his lazy nature.
    • In Chapter 2: Despite his insistence that he was treated as a second-class citizen, he does have a rather lavish lifestyle in a big palace, to the point where he once mistook Ruggie's home for a doghouse when shown a picture (which Ruggie took offense to and reminds him of on occasion).
    • In Chapter 4: Grim notes that Leona has so much of his belongings, clothes, jewelry, etc. both at home and on campus that the only items he takes home for the winter break are his wallet and phone. In contrast, Ruggie has to hoard any remaining free food and supplies to provide for his family and neighborhood struggling in the slums during the extended break period.
  • Riddle for the Ages: What was the payment that he gave to Azul for the magic boosting potion Ruggie was drinking for the plan? While there are many speculations, the light novel adaptation ends this question by revealing that Leona paid with a portion of the riches he has as a royalty.
  • Sand Blaster: His unique magic, "King's Roar", is able to make everything he touches (or everything within his range, as showcased in his SSR version's personal story) dry up and turn into sand. It is potentially lethal to living beings as well.
  • Shirtless Scene: In the game, Leona sleeps in his dorm uniform at night, but in Episode of Octavinelle, he sleeps shirtless, wearing only his pants. He has a very tone muscular body.
  • Spare to the Throne: The second-born Kingscholar son and was the heir to the throne after Farena, until Cheka was born, anyway.
  • Tall, Dark, and Handsome: Fits the bill with dark hair and tanned skin along with being good-looking.
  • The Un-Favourite: Aside from being treated as Always Second Best, he is also regarded unfavorably by his people back home because they always compare him to his older brother.
  • Unkempt Beauty: Male example. Leona is not one to give a damn about appearances, perfectly okay with wearing his school uniform messily and giving others such as Vil a hard time when they chastise him for it. Not to say this hinders Leona's good looks, in fact it actually enhances them.
  • Vitriolic Best Buds: Silver implies that Leona's relationship with Malleus is like this. He claims to hate Malleus and is a jerk to him to his face, but Leona is seen hanging around him anyway. Ruggie says they're usually fighting rather than talking, however.
  • Wouldn't Hit a Girl: One of Leona's most redeeming qualities is his respect for women. Justified, as he hails from the Afterglow Savannah, where the women are stronger than the men & are thus held in a higher regard. With that said one story seems to hint that this is more begrudgingly than expected as Leona openly gripes about the concept.
  • You Didn't Ask: Isn't one to give away any information he has unprompted. He quotes this trope word for word in chapter 3, when Yuu's group call him out for not telling them that Jade and Floyd are merpeople.

    Jack Howl
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/savanaclaw_chara_jack_detail_a.png
Voiced by: Taito Ban, Yuuko Mori (child)
Twisted from: ?
Grade: First year

Amongst the athletic Savanaclaw students, Jack stands out with his exceptionally muscular frame and tall height. He speaks roughly and has little interest in socializing with others, but he holds a strong self-pride that affects his personal honor code.

  • Animal Motifs: Wolves.
  • Animal Stereotypes: Tends to fit the general bill of the classic lone wolf type; he's initially aloof and generally distant to most people, but kind, protective and loyal towards those who are close to him. It's a bonus that his wolf form is colored white.
  • Bully Hunter: A young Jack met Vil when three children were about to gang up on Vil as "revenge for the hero" in the drama they watched. Jack shooed them off before they could even try to bother Vil.
  • Brutal Honesty: 'Straightforward' is an understatement. This guy does not mince words and would rather cut to the chase, voicing his criticisms and opinions straight from his heart. However, his feelings are an entirely different matter…
  • Childhood Friends: With Pomefiore dorm leader, Vil. He and Vil were neighbors as children. As well as being one of the few people who saw Vil for who he truly is beyond his Typecast role.
  • Delinquents: Subverted. He often gets into (usually provoked) fights with an appearance to match, but he's otherwise a good guy.
  • Demonic Possession: During the second Halloween event, Endless Halloween Night. Jack is one of the many students kidnapped and taken over by ghosts. His ghost in particular makes him act like a haughty, useless noble.
  • Everyone Has Standards: Doing your best with everything you've got? Fair deal. If said everything means that you'll cheat your way through like what Leona and Ruggie did to their opponents in the Magical Shift tournament? He won't have any of it.
  • Hidden Depths: Chapter 4 reveals that he takes care of cacti in his spare time.
  • Huge Schoolgirl: A male example of this trope. He's only 16, yet stands at 192 centimetres (6'2"), and is the second-tallest playable character.
  • In-Series Nickname: Floyd calls him "Sea Urchin" note.
  • Irony: For a student of Night Raven College, whose students are often self-serving and underhanded, Jack has a strong sense of justice and righteousness.
  • I Work Alone: Jack has a strong stance of wanting to do things by his own and not rely on others unless he is forced to, such as in Chapter 2 where Yuu calls out on him for trying to handle facing Leona and Ruggie all by himself.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: In Fairy Gala If, Jack sneezed due to being unable to stand the smell of the fairy dust and flowers for too long shortly after the team finished their runway performance. This causes their disguises to be busted to all the fairies present and nearly caused the Fairy Gala that the fairies consider as sacred to be ruined if not for Silver speaking up to salvage the situation.
  • Lightning Bruiser: Showcased in-story during the Happy Beans Day event, where he displays a powerful feat of strength and speed in the game without relying on magic at all. Those capabilities are seemingly attributed to his wolf-like racial trait.
  • Nice Guy: His gruff exterior and Brutal Honesty aside, his strong moral compass, straightforward nature, refusal to back down from his promises, and general decency as a person mark him as this.
  • The Nose Knows: As a wolf beastman, he has a strong sense of smell. Unfortunately, this backfired on him in Fairy Gala If as his strong sense of smell caused him to sneeze on the fairy dust and bust the team's disguises.
  • Shapeshifting: His unique magic, "Unleash Beast", lets him turn into an actual wolf.
  • Single-Target Sexuality: A Discussed Trope in Ace's Ghost Groom personal story. When asked why Jack wouldn't be interested in romance, he discussed that Wolf Beastmen in general, Jack himself included, all chose and prefer to cherish only one person for the rest of their lives and when the time comes that he fell in love, he would like to spend the rest of his life with that person he would fall in love with in the future.
  • Teeth-Clenched Teamwork: He begrudgingly teams up with Azul during the Happy Beans Day event.
  • Token Good Teammate:
    • For Savanaclaw, as he prefers to play fair rather than cheat by injuring his opponents during the Magical Shift tournament, which was what Leona and Ruggie did in Chapter 2.
    • He ends up as this in Yuu's group of friends, as he was the only one to actually study hard without making contracts with Azul, unlike Ace, Deuce and Grim.
    • Overall despite the facade he puts on, he's one of the most decent and consistently moral characters of the cast.
  • Tsundere: Will often act in denial if people point out some of his nicer acts.
  • "Well Done, Son" Guy: His SSR Dorm Uniform personal story centers on him trying to prove his usefulness to Ruggie, who in turn is rather annoyed by how clingy he’s become. By the end, he asks Ruggie if he can call him "big bro" but Ruggie rejects him, claiming he doesn’t want a big burly guy as his little brother.
  • White Wolves Are Special: "Unleash Beast" turns Jack into his wolf form which has all white fur, and true to the trope Jack is one of the most morally upstanding members of the cast. Dialed back a bit given Jack is still twisted from a villain and has his occasional moments.

    Ruggie Bucchi
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/savanaclaw_chara_ruggie_detail_a.png
Voiced by: Aoi Ichikawa
Twisted from: The Hyenas
Grade: Second year

Often found beside Leona, Ruggie takes it upon himself to wake his dorm leader and often acts as a caddy, fulfilling his orders. Ruggie is an ambitious and conniving person, not above using his magic to achieve his goals. Having grown up impoverished, he's always eager to eat and aims to become successful and wealthy.

  • Animal Motifs: Hyenas.
  • Animal Stereotypes: Being figuratively and literally The Hyena, he's also shifty and clever, in a cunning way. He does, however, possess a much more noble trait also common in hyenas (yet seldom seen in media), that being his strong commitment to his family and community.
  • Beleaguered Assistant: To Leona, considering that his leader tends to be unmotivated and sloppy. So much so that players are often surprised to learn that he isn't Savanaclaw's vice dorm leader.
  • Big Eater: He's described in his character description as being eager to eat. Justified as he's grown up not eating enough.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: He's good at acting pleasant and compliant to others, but it's mainly an act to lower the guard of those unassuming. He mainly pulls this act to get others to think he's acting according to how they want him to and catch their guards off later, such as when he stole Riddle and Cater's magical pens right under their nose and the key to Azul's safe.
  • Bizarre Taste in Food: Not him, but Leona, Ace, Deuce and Grim think that Ruggie has this when Rook mentions that Ruggie has a habit of collecting and eating dandelions, which led to his nickname of "Monsieur Dandelion" from Rook. In contrary to common conception, some types of dandelion weeds are edible.
  • Book Dumb: His birthday personal story reveals that due to his upbringing in the slums, his grades are poor when he was first enrolled in Night Raven College until Leona starts to tutor him. By his 2nd year, Ruggie is good enough that he can score at least an average.
  • Composite Character: Instead of being twisted from a single hyena, Ruggie's based an all of them, including the nameless horde.
  • Cool Big Bro: Jack eventually sees him as this as he respects how hard Ruggie works as Leona's helper, and wants to help him in any way he can. While Ruggie is initially put off by the admiration Jack gives him, he eventually appreciates the gesture. His voice lines in various cards and some personal story vignettes also hints that Ruggie is seen as one by the kids in his hometown.
  • Crippling the Competition: He uses his unique magic to injure several would-be Magift opponents in Chapter 2.
  • Death by Childbirth: In Ruggie's birthday personal story, he says his mother joined the stars in the sky shortly after he was born.
  • Do You Want to Haggle?: His sports uniform personal story involves Ruggie haggling with Sam. He mentions that he does this a lot because of his poor upbringing.
  • Easily Forgiven: Despite Ruggie seemingly being Easily Forgiven for hurting Trey, Jamil and a handful of students to cripple the competition, and for forgiving Leona so easily for nearly murdering him, this is actually a Downplayed Trope in two different cases.
  • Eat the Rich: From time to time Ruggie will have bouts of showing disdain towards individuals of wealthy stature. Justified, given how he was raised in extreme poverty.
  • Fantastic Racism: His Ceremony Robe personal story implies that Hyena beastmen in general still face discrimination from other beastmen in spite of history saying that the Hyena's had become part of Pride Rock's community.
Ruggie: Hmm, but if you go back to your dorm now, Azul’s probably going to be furious with you later.
    Floyd: ...Azul?
Ruggie: I mean, it makes sense. You’d be bailing on a restaurant that was busy enough for him to even seek out a hyena’s help. Plus, remember you said he made you sit on your knees when you skipped a busy shift a while ago?
  • Hidden Depths:
    • When the students return to their homes for winter break in Chapter 4, Ruggie mentions that he gets nearly-expired food free from the cafeteria to feed his grandmother and the street kids in his neighborhood. Jack adds that he does this every long holiday as most families in his hometown live in poverty.
    • "Vargas Camp ~Spring Happenings~" reveal that Ruggie knows how to survive out in the wilderness well enough even without the aid of magic due to being influenced by how he grew up.
    • His birthday personal story also has him mention that he knows and learned at least 10 different languages to greet someone and negotiate with them.
    • His Halloween SR story also shows he's somewhat familiar with all kinds of food from around the world, being able to name them and discuss their ingredients thanks to various part-time serving jobs he's had.
  • The Hyena: Befitting someone twisted from the hyenas, he's prone to laughing for any reason.
  • I Call It "Vera": Downplayed in contrast to the other examples of this trope, but his voice lines while doing Flying classes has him call his flying broom "Broom-kun".
  • Idle Rich: Discussed in his Ceremony robe homescreen voice lines, but averted. Since Ruggie actually dislikes becoming this very trope.
Ruggie: I’m not rich, but I’ll always like this better than being a spoiled brat who doesn’t have a problem in the world.
  • In-Series Nickname:
    • Is given the nickname "Sharksucker" note, courtesy of Floyd.
    • Rook calls him "Monsieur Dandelion" note.
  • Irony: Ruggie is inherently an impatient person, as his Fairy Gala couture card lines has him confess that he doesn't like outfits with too many buttons because of it. Ruggie's talent is fishing. An activity that usually requires having lots of patience.
  • Le Parkour: In Episode of Savanaclaw, during the chase scene where Ace and Deuce go after him, Ruggie exits the school building (through the window, jumps across another building, flips onto the well’s rooftop, and safely lands on the ground.
  • Mundane Wish: His wish in the Wish Upon A Star event is to get a high paying job. Considering his current status, it was probably the best thing to use his wish on.
  • Only in It for the Money: He'll only consider doing something if he gets paid for it. Not because he wants to get rich or anything, but because he lived in Perpetual Poverty and simply wants to be able to provide for his community back in the slums of Afterglow Savannah, downplaying the trope. Outside of his loyalty for Leona, he only stays around, even as a Beleaguered Assistant, because Leona pays for him.
  • Penny Among Diamonds: In contrast to Leona and Jack who are financially well-off, Ruggie is stated to be poor and one of his card stories reveals that he lived in the slums of his hometown. It's because of his upbringing that he's savvy with money and has a hobby of taking part-time jobs.
  • People Puppets: This is what Ruggie's unique magic 'Laugh with Me' does—anyone affected by it copies Ruggie's movements. This is how Ruggie got Grim to exchange sandwiches and how Trey, Jamil and all of the other victims got injured.
  • Pet the Dog:
    • One of his positive qualities are his loyalty to his community and family, much of his earnings from part-time jobs and the like will go to his savings and his community back in Sunset Savannah. He also greatly respects his grandmother and often speaks about how much she taught him in several personal stories.
    • Despite his shifty personality, he's actually good with kids and the children in his hometown is implied to look up to him. This trait is showcased in his Port Fes personal story vignette where he easily cheers up a lost child.
  • Raised by Grandparents: Ruggie's birthday personal story reveals that he is raised by his grandmother as his mother died by childbirth while his father left for work and never came back (With the heavy implication that he died).
  • Signature Laugh: "Kishishishi".
  • Supreme Chef: Some of his card stories establish that he is good at cooking. In his school uniform story, he tells Jade that he learned how to cook from his grandmother.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Doughnuts. In Ruggie's Birthday Suit SSR personal story, the reason why doughnuts are his favorite food is because his grandmother made them every year for his birthday, since they couldn't afford to buy fancy cakes. He loves to eat the ones with crunchy outer layers, and fluffy breaded layers inside.
  • Verbal Tic: Adds "-ssu" to most of his sentences.
  • Workaholic: He may not seem like it at first, but the fact that he considers "working in his part-time jobs" to be his favorite hobby should tell you otherwise. His birthday personal story also reveals that he works part time even in the holidays.
  • You Are in Command Now: Leona entrusts Savanaclaw to him in Chapter 6, when the S.T.Y.X. ops arrive to detain the former. Ruggie is understandably confused with all this, especially since Leona implies that he might not be coming back. Thankfully, this doesn't last as the kidnapped students eventually return
